Justin Bieber's troubled diplomacy in Israel

Justin Bieber has been having a difficult time in Israel.  Since arriving on Monday, he has been mobbed by screaming fans and paparazzi, leading him to tweet:

“They should be ashamed of themselves. Take pictures of me eating but not in a place of prayer, ridiculous.”

and

"i want to see this country and all the places ive dreamed of and whether its the paps or being pulled into politics its been frustrating.”

But the real brouhaha began on Tuesday when it emerged that Bieber's meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been called off. Each side offered a different reason for the change of plans.

Haaretz, a leading Israeli newspaper, cited Israel's Channel Two reporting that Netanyahu canceled the meeting because Bieber refused to meet with children living in communities affected by Gaza rocket fire.

According to the New York Times, Bieber's representatives say the cancellation was called off for logistical, not political reasons.

All of this comes at a characteristically dramatic time for Israel. Last Thursday, a Hamas rocket attack left an Israeli teenager critically wounded.  CNN reports that Israel responded with a series of strikes on Gaza that left at least 18 people dead. The NYT reports about half the dead were civilians.

It's not easy being a young pop superstar in a politically tumultuous part of the world.

I met David Cassidy when he was in his 40's and he was looking for attention. Plus he didn't like to have his picture taken while he was eating either. He was afraid of the tabloid headlines that might appear about him eating his life away. Very cool guy to talk to though.

Justin is deeply religious and also aware that he is a 'pop' icon who depends on his fans for hiss success. I think Israel is a place he would have a deep and genuine interest in visiting. Maybe just for a second he lost sight of the fact that, for now, he enjoys such a fanatic response from young female fans. Regarding the need to turn this political, shame on the government of Israel for trying to use a kid to score points for their agenda. Why not get all the kids, Palestinian and Jewish alike (including the ones in coffins) who have affected together in the same room then let him meet them?

What kind idiot is the PM of Israel? Why is he meeting with JB? What does one have anything to gain from the other? JB meeting the Israeli PM? Who is handling this kid?
These Hollywood people have no idea what getting a real job means. I know he's just a kid, so gets a pass from me, but really. You get up every day, go to work, do your best and go home. You come back the next day and do it again. If that sounds like a bad thing, well, you would wrong and you don't know what a real job is. If it is doing something you like/love it is a good thing. If he loves singing, then go sing and sit down. What is this crap that he should visit sick, poor kids? Is he now going to be pressured to give away his money to them? Why?

      • Jeff

They're not sick and poor, they're kids whose parents chose to live in illegally occupied territory, with the full expectation that they would be under constant threat of attack. Why any Israeli would choose to live in the occupied territories is as much of a mystery to me as why PM Netanyahu would want to meet with Justin Bieber.

        April 13, 2011 at 12:52 pm |
      • fred

He should do nothing. Sit on his hands all day and do nothing so cynical people won't have anything to complain about. BTW Hollywood people do work. Twelve plus hours a day. He's obviously has enough charisma and talent to do what he does.

      • jeff didn't study history

Jeff, you should have read the story. It said Beiber was in Israel, not Gaza or the West Bank. Perhaps you can dig out your 1940 atlas and look at how the "country" of Palestine was dismantled. When you get done jamming forks in your eyes, you may realize that it was a British mandate. The land you call "Palestine" was ancient Israel, ruled by Israelites for 2000 years and only ruled by Muslims from 637AD to 1032AD. Don't tell me...public school?

        April 13, 2011 at 1:37 pm |
      • Stone

Hey Jeff, Why do they call them "occupied" territories? Every other nation that seizes land that was used to launch attacks on their homeland gets to keep the turf they acquired. Let's see, Israel COMPLETELY pulled out of Gaza YEARS ago! So why are Gazans launching rockets? Cause they know morons like you think it's because Israel is "occupying" them.

      • Ben Thare

Well, it makes sense that Netanyahu would meet with Bieber. The PM has to deal with politically-martyred d*uchebags, so maybe he needed to study and understand a d*uchebag during its developmental stages to develop an effective strategy to stop further d*uchebag activity.

        April 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm |
      • Ben Thare

This story is pointless and only serves to increase CNN"s visitor hit count so they can charge more for advertising. But then again, all of us are schmucks for reading this tripe. :)

      • FactChecker

@ "Jeff didnt study history": The Israelites did not rule that land for 2000 years. Appears you haven't heard of people known as the Pharaohs, Canaanites, the Assyrians, Persians, Byzantines, Greekss, etc, etc, all of whom ruled that land for much longer than the Israelites. All in all, they (the Israelites) ruled that land for somewhere between 150-200 years as compared to about 350 years which is how long the NEXT shortest rulers of that land ruled it for. So you're welcome for the history lesson, and please stop spreading lies to further the "plight" of the poor Israelites and the helpless defenseless ILLEGAL jewish settlers in land that is not theirs.

I don't care about some fairy tale holy book written my men, get off my land and be gone. We getting nothing from Israel and they take and take billions from taxpayers and we owe them nothing! Remember the USS Liberty? Who do you believe your servicemen or a foreign power? If you believe a foreign power then your allegiance is with another country, end of story. Do I have to start talking about American citizens assignation in the US by Israeli agents?

In a capitalistic system, a "real job" is anything people will pay you to do. Just because someone's found an easy or glamorous way to make money doesn't mean it's not a real job. Calling it so makes you sound bitter.

Maybe if Israel would stop bulldozing over peace activists to get to Palestinian homes, or maybe if they'd stop violating other countries airspace, maybe if they'd stop storming humanitarian flotillas with pistols and riot gear, maybe if they'd stop imprisoning the people of Gaza in their territory, maybe if they acted like they were serious about a peace agreement, maybe then the rockets would stop.

        April 13, 2011 at 3:45 pm |
      • Bob

Steevo–google "attacks on Israel" There have been more than a dozen. Israel made peace with Egypt. Israel is smart to make sure that Syria, Libya, Iran, and other hostile countries are not using the humanitarian aid flotilla as a way to get weapons into Palestinian hands. The Palestinian charter calls for the destruction of Israel. If you were Israel how eager would you be to have them for a neighbor? Would you let JB's Canada fire mortar round and rockets into the US with no response? Simp.

Justin's manager had to know that performing in Israel right now would has a political tilt, with so many artists boycotting Israel currently. Remember that Christians in Israel are only slightly more tolerated than Muslim at times but the tourist dollars and performing artists are important to Israel's economy. If you question this then go to Israel and see for yourself.

Turns out that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu real reason for not meeting with Bieber was that the stylist who was to give Justin yet another new haircut missed his plane and didn't get there in time. The whole point of this historic meeting was to reveal yet another new look for the rising pop star as he posed with the Prime Minister for a photo op.This time under the veil of international politics.I feel bad for the stylist. He will have a pretty rough road ahead of him as the styling industry is very fickle when it comes to being prompt

I agree with the overall sentiment of Todd Franco, though the solution isn't arming the Palestinians. The solution is having the organized party that is inflicting the most damage on the other party and is actually capable of making compromises fix the root cause. i.e., have Israel declare Jerusalem an independent nation a la The Vatican, and concede that the Palestinians deserve their own nation. I really don't see what is so hard about this.

You're obviously highly uneducated on the issues of Palestine. Israel is a bastard nation forged by UN declaration because no one else wanted the Jewish disapora descending in entireity on their country AND to appease the powerful Jewish lobby groups Zionist aspirations in Western politics of the US and UK. Palestine was under Bristish Mandate in the first part of the 20th century, the Zionist movement was gaining momentum at the time and Jewish ethnic peoples were emigrating to Palestine en masse to establish their supposedly "religiously vindicated" state of Israel there. The British Mandate attempted to limit the emmigration to avoid gentrification of the land which now had a predominantly Arab cultural identity. Needless to say the Zionists didn't like this policy as their God had promised them that land in their precious Torah.

Read up further on the Stern Group, the Bombing of the Hotel David and all sorts of other acts of terror committed by Jewish Zionist groups prior to Israels "legal" establishment as a state by UN Declaration, long before Hamas or Hezbollah ever existed.

You should delve a little further back in to history if you want to really understand something, until then stop attempting to sound like you have even the faintest intellectual insight in to the Arab Israeli conflict.

It all essentially amounts to the Manifest Destiny policy that Europeons employed in the "New World" when pushing the local indigenous inhabitants (i.e. the native americans) out. Though it seems to have worked out for "OUR" benefit in the long run, that doesn't mean we should turn a blind eye to the wrongfulness of it all.

Helen Thomas is right about Israel and the Israelis. they should go back to where they came from, i.e., Europe. Those who migrated to Palestine and stole Palestinian lands were of European origin and had no connection to the land. What would you do if a Mexican came to the USA, kicked you out of your home and state, then build a fence around it so that you cannot come in without their permission and divert the water away from your refugee camp, bulldoze your new dwellings, drop bombs from fighter jets, prevent you from legally buying arms to defend yourself (so you have to smuggle or use rocks) and prevent foreign reporters, etc. from visiting where you now live?
Why did Bibi not take Justin beiber to see where the Palestinians live and where the bury all the children killed by Israel? Oh, I get it. The Palestinians are not civilized people so their lives don't count.
If US stop supporting Israel illegal occupation and deals fairly with the issue, the whole of the Arab and Muslim world would change the way they thing about US Govt and some Americans.

And rockets are no more barbaric than the destruction of palistinian homes and posessions with bulldosers. Or the use of chemical weapons that are accepted nearly worldwide as a weapon of mass destruction. And then Israel wonders why the UN is so anti Israel. Israel deserves what they get.

Whose land? In 1948, after the creation of the State of Israel was approved by a 33 to 13 vote of UN members, the Arab league declined to accept the resolution. They attacked the new state and lost (score: Israel – 1, Arabs – 0). In 1956, Egypt tried again and lost (Israel -2, Arabs – 0). In 1967, Egypt, Jordan & Syria that had amassed in excess of 250,000 troops on the borders with Israel when the Israelis decided to strike a pre-emptive blow instead of waiting to be attacked. Result? A humiliating defeat for the 3 countries (Israel – 3, Arabs – 0). !973 – surprise attacks caught Israel off-guard, but the country managed to defeat Syria & Egypt once again (Israel 4, Arabs 0).

After being defeated in 4 different wars, the Arab countries have the audacity to think that the land they lost during these conflicts actually still belongs to them!!! I guess their argument must be, "If we win the wars, we can expect to get our land back..........or, if we lose the wars, we can expect to get the land back". What nonsense!!!

Between 1948 and 1970, over 800,000 Jews were driven out of Arab lands. Have they received compensation? Would they be allowed to return to their "homes"? The West Bank will belong to Israel until it chooses to give it away. Israel should feel obliged to return land when the U.S. returns California, Texas and Florida to the Mexicans, when China frees Tibet and when England gives Gibraltar to the Spanish.

they don't lob rockets at buses of civilians, first they use WP so they can deny they were attacking the citizens, then they use cluster bombs, so that children trip over the undetonated bombs days later and blow their legs off. They don't shoot missiles at buses of civilians until they've determined there might be one extremist in the bus. then they take out the bus, the civilians and the neighborhood around it. "Smart weapons" are not so under IDF command.

Israel did not win the war on its own...UK saved their behind... Israel did not win any land at all... after world war two The Otoman empire was split by British to what is now the Middle East ...world did not want to deal with the Jews so they dumped them in middle east... they lilterally kicked out a quater million arabs from their home to free up the space for Jews.... That is why to this day arabs refuse to accept Israel...
arabs had almost defeated jews in the first war and at the last minute UK air support stepped in to save them... and since then israel has been handed sophisticated weapons while the arabs got branded as terrorists and had all their weapons taken away.

They shoot at civilians all the time and then tell the media they regretted it and didn't mean it. Only a fool or a brainwashed person would believe everything the government tells them. I suppose you believe their lies about the murder of servicemen aboard the USS Liberty? Shall we try and execute these servicemen and sent them to Israeli citizens for doubting the Master of Christians word of mouth? Shall we revoke your citizenship for allegiance to a foreign power? If they shot your child at point blank range would you think any American or the government would believe your story? Of course not, the master is always right, that is if you worship the antichrist!

It would be good if Bieber moved his safe Tel Aviv concert to Sderot, which is within range of the daily mortars and missiles fired by Hamas at children and teenagers in Israel, the kind of kids who populate Bieber concerts. If nothing else, the international press, knowing that they could be killed at any moment, would get a feel for what it must be like for Israelis living under the daily threat of annihilation from Hamas and other terrorist Palestnian groups

You know why Palestinian civilians are killed? Because Hamas places its weapons in civilian areas, thus ensuring that there will be innocents killed. Check out the IDF map showing where Hamas munitions are –all placed around homes thruout Gaza. IDF publicized that map to show the world what they have to deal with and how hard it is to strike back at terrorists who hide in civilian areas.

That's what happens when they occupy someone else's territory, build settlements on what is widely recognized as stolen land, and throw their weight around only because they have the US to back them up.

Some (illegal) settlers are killed so what does Israel do? Build even more illegal settlements! Brilliant...

I say we (the US) should leave Israel to their own devices, stop selling them weapons and no more aid of any kind. Let's see how long it takes for them to make peace then!

These are wealthy American, European, and Russian immigrants that decided it's better to avoid taxes at home and move there to keep the wealth and stomp and steal from the poor. You can't go back thousands of years ago and come forward and claim you own something, which is way they deserve to be attacked everyday. Israelis go to the extreme to protect civilians, their own and Palestinians. But they can only do so much if terrorists hide in civilian areas. What would you do? Watch while your children die and not strike back since your enemy hides in hospitals, mosques, and schools. Israel goes so far as to phone Palestinians living in these areas to warn them to flee before they're struck since missile batteries are planted next door. This is a tough battle, which doesn't lend itself to easy solutions or platitudes. The media doesn't help by noting the imbalance in casualties without explaining why this is so common.

Been smoking crack lately, the Zionists call Palestinians before an air strike to flee. If this is the case the freedom fighters would flee as well, don't you think. If the Palestinians had the same weapons (donated by the US), the Zionists would have escaped to South Argentina where they will end UP in the near future.

I think it's a little ridiculous how everyone keeps bad mouthing Justin Bieber... Especially for adults. He's a 17 year old child who is famous because we made him that way... He didn't wake up a pop star one morning because he wanted to, Americans saw talent in him and through the listening and purchasing of music and merchandise we brought him to his frame... But no Lets talk bad about him because the jealousy eats at my soul that my dreams of being a famous celebrity were shot down when I lost the high school talent show and now I'm stuck in a mediocre desk job trying to vicariously live through my children by pushing them to their limit until lose the audition to American idol and they backlash and end up just like me! He's still someones child, Grand child, brother, and friend... He's 17, how old are you? He'll stop being famous when the 6.6 billion world members stop worshipping him. He was found on you tube... He was signed because of his talent. Stop being so jealous of a childs success....

Ask yourself, what would I want my country to do if a terrorist organization fired 10,000 missiles and mortars at my children, killing friend's and neighbor's children indescrimately? I ask you, why we should admire a performer of any age anywhere who can act like nothing outrageous is happeing to children in southern Israel?

Is this supposed to be humanitarin tour? A publicity tour or a concert tour? If they are trying to bundle this up as all 3 it is doomed for failure. What does a 17 year old know about world events? He was born in 1994. The Internet was just becomming mainstream when he was born. Why did his handlers even try to push this event?
This could destroy what little credibility he has and destroy he career with one stupid remark.

You just know that a stint on "Celebrity Rehab" is in this kids future. Entertainment industry just loves chewing every bit of flavor out of the latest sensation then spitting them out. Unfortunately, the kids don't know that and the "adults" that surround them are more interested in the meal ticket than the kid.

I would also add that I'm getting tired of hearing complaints from celebrities about the intrusion of the media on their privacy. Sorry, but courting the media is part of your extremely well-paid "job." You cannot have it both ways. And as far as Bieber complaining via Twitter about the press, it's going to come round to bite him–I have a suspicion the press has been looking the other way with some of this boy's "extracurricular activities." It's only a matter of time before they catch him with his hand in the cookie jar, much like Miley Cyrus and her "salivia" bong-smoking, and the press is going to exact their revenge.

Look at the countries on a map. Israel has farmed, irrigated and modernized the tiny piece of land, claiming it as theirs. NOW the Arabs want it. Nevermind that they couldn't do the same with their vast lands and most of the people live in abject poverty. All Israel is doing is defending their land. They do not want to enlarge their country. They just want to be left in peace. You'd think the Arabs would have learned their lesson by now. Israel is much more advanced and will not just meekly give up their tiny country. They retaliate every time they are attacked. Israel values life. The Arab countries do not, as they usually hide their military buildings in schools and residential neighborhoods, thinking the rest of the world would never go too close to civilians.

I remember the USS Liberty incident. It occured on the 8th of June in 1967 during the Six-Day War. After the attack by Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats had concluded, 34 crew members were killed and 170 were wounded. Israel claimed that their military had mistaken the Liberty for the El Quseir, an Egyptian vessel. Yeah, right! The Liberty was flying an American flag plus the markings on the ship were in the Latin, not the Arabic alphabet. They knew who they were attacking and they knew what we were doing out there! Several theories have been proposed as to why we were attacked. One was that the Israeli military did not want us monitoring their activities and the events occuring in Gaza. They also did not want us to know about their eventual plans to attack Syria. But we will unfortunately never know the real reason.

The land doesn't belong to them. It was siezed by Israel from Egypt after Egypt attacked Israel for the umpteenth time. About 98% of it was offered to create a Palestinian homeland, with the provision that the Palestinians acknowledge the right of Israel to exist. Hamas threatened to topple Arafat so Arafat squashed the deal. "Palestinians" did not exist in the modern sense until the word was used by Yassir Arafat in the early '70s. The Palestinians, as you call them, have been kicked out of or refused entry to every Arab country there is, because the are violent, uneducated, and generally a pain in everyone's @ss.

Your also to young to realize that mixing religion with your profession will get you nothing but fruit-loop attention. If I was an Israeli citizen and Netanyahu was taking time out of his very important busy schedule to meet with this little shit I would be pissed. Good move Netanyahu, the kid is useless, no need to meet him anyhow.

I am constantly amazed by his injecting himself into political and social debates and commenting on things he knows very little about. Come on, he's only been around for a few years- the lack of experience and knowledge and yes, wisdom is HUGE. Shut up, grow up and talk to me when you're 25 or so.

Why Bini had agreed to meet with Bieber is anyone's guess. The kid needs to go home to Canada – he is not an exceptional singer, he is a flash in the pan. His anti-choice comments some time ago, and now this mess in Israel, clearly show that his handlers are idiots. As are the anti-Semitics who clearly don't get the fact that Jews were in Palestine way before the Muslims.

First off, I am uncertain why Bieber would be meeting with a prime minister anyway. He is a musician and not into politics. Secondly, Bieber, you are in the holy land... penty of places to watch you pray and fans will take pics of you anywhere and the paps are annoying everywhere. Tough! Lastly, whenever American journalism gets a chance, they stab Israel. It is the Jewish land. The Palestinians were kicked out of jordan and came to "Palestine". For those that have an issue with US support of Israel; would you prefer that we make a deal with a terrorist country that supports honor killing instead? Get real! Israelis live everyday as their last. Their education and inventions are top notch. And Jews didn't come from Europe originally. We all know that. Perhaps Helen will recall the Shoah when most were wiped out? Certainly not because it was our land! Israel is the homeland of Judaism. Muslims have Mecca and Medina. Christians have Bethlehem. It was Jews who caused 9/11 folks... it was terrorists... think!

Well, Kirk, when you return your home and land to the Native American tribe from which it was stolen and soaked in their blood, perhaps then you won't sound like a half-wit hypocrite insisting that Israel return that which is theirs. Land won in a war belongs to the VICTOR, remember? Think back to the 18th century when a few colonies rebelled against England, won their war and took England's land and made it their own. Then the descendants of these colonists fought in multiple wars against the Native Americans and took their land and made it their own. Then lets not forget the war against Mexico which gave the young United States Baja, CA and Texas.

Palestinians have never made anything, built, anything, or grown anything. They are the most useless group of people on the earth. Not even their Arab bretheren want anything to do with them except use them as a poltical football. If they disappeared tomorrow who would notice, except the Israelis, who would notice that rockets aren't landing in their back yards anymore. They are like the human appendix–they serve no useful purpose and when inflamed they are dangerous and should be removed.

Ok, I'll play along. List the Palestinian accomplishments. Successful bus bombings and wedding reception bombings don't count. I'm 49, white, home owner, agnostic trending to athiest, gainfully employed at 6 figures. Palestinians make war and nothing else. Israel buried the hatchet with Egypt 30 years ago when Egypt agreed that Israel has a right to exist. Palestinians could expet the same, but they won't make that concession. I understand that they want a homeland but telling your would-be neighbor that you want to destroy them is not a winning argument. First rule of life is self-preservation. Second rule of life is that living is easier if you try tpo get along with people. The PLO Charter called for the destuction of Israel way before anyone was talking about a Palestinian homeland. Egypt even agreed to let land siezed by Israel be given to Palestinians for a homeland, but Hamas would not accept the terms that Palestine acknowledge Israel's right to exist. I have no deep abiding love for Israel, but they're only doing what any homeowner with a gun would reasonably do if you invade their house.

If JB has doesn't want the paparazzi and banal interests of pop magazines, maybe he should just quit and go to school full time or, yes, retire. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you...

As to Israel, quite a challenge they have pursuing radical Muslim terrorists who deliberately hide, and launch missiles, among civilians, knowing that Israel goes to great efforts to avoid striking where civilians are present. So when civilians are inevitably also hit under such circumstances the responsibility for it is quite directly that of the radical Muslim terrorists (the Hamas) themselves...

Israel thinks they were given territory based on their religion. Now can any of you tell me in which Zionist book it states this in? The Zionist star on their flag is a symbol of the male and female interlocked as "one". Two triangles opposite each other, this also shows the sacred geometry that's listed in the Jewish Kaballa. Ahhh yes, the Kaballa, where Jewish mysticism is practiced and black magic runs RAMPANT!! Think this evil magic isn't still used today? Think again. You have no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. I highly suggest most of you do some research on the Kaballa, then you will see just what these Zionist's beliefs are founded on. "Real" Jews know they weren't promised any land by ANYONE accept the Pharaoh blooded royalty you call the British Monarchy (monarch=moon arch=occult). ...and of course the US followed like the good little war machine puppies we were at the time....and still are.

fact: justin is not jewish. he does respect the religion though. All he wanted to do in the first place was look around israel. the reason why he was there is because hes having a concert there. Papparazzi was around him when he was walking around where jesus did as he said but instead of them enjoying their time there all they do is take pictures of him. if you tried to put yourself in his position you could see where im going. and the guys that are saying this isnt news and that news is when justin bieber admits hes gay is, grow up. think to yourself. do you know the kid personally, do you know what hes been through? exaxctly. so who are you haters to judge? let him do his thing. he needs a break. Think before you speak. (:

Really sad! Children of innocenes got killed daily by: drugs, alcohols, shipped them to wars, abuses of any sorts, gangs, porno, cults, and more. Don't you think we are responsible for all actions, voliences and lyings? We set lot of bad examples to our children? not them setting bad examples? Now poltic. We put kids in there now? What a joke! We did enough damages on our children and leave them be!!!

Is anyone else simply troubled by the fact that 'justin beiber', 'diplomacy', and 'israel', or insert the country of your choosing here '_________' was even used in the same sentence? Lmao what is he 13? Why would a prime minister of any country agree to take a meeting with a whiny popstar who isn't even old enough to vote in his own country?!?! I would've been all, "listen kid, push your little 'bieber is peace and love' Disney channel t-shirts on your own time, I have a country to run and a war to fight' lol wtf is going on...

Even if Bieber did refuse to visit Gaza – is that really something we can fault him for? Is it unreasonable for a 17 year old boy to be too nervous to enter a region under constant threat of rocket attack? He might be world famous with tons of money, but that's not going to give him automatic nerves of steel.

First of all, everybody, leave the kid alone. He's just a teenage boy, albeit a famous one.

Second of all, to those who don't know the entire story of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, I suggest you bone up on your facts before writing your opinions. Israel didn't steal anyone's land – they were attacked by all of their neighbors including Egypt, Jordan and Syria, and took over these 'disputed' territories during that war to defend themselves. The latest conflicts are identical to most of the earlier ones – some moronic Palestinian attacks innocent Israeli citizens (or tourists), or a bunch of them start shooting rockets into Israel, and Israel defends itself.

Personally, I don't understand why Israel wants the dust bowl known as the Gaza Strip, they should let the Palestinians have it and keep it, and build a 20' high fence around it like what we were going to do with Mexico. As far as the West Bank, my understanding (which may be incorrect) is that they see it as necessary land to be a buffer from their sworn enemies on the other side. They should never surrender Jerusalem any more than we should give Texas back to Mexico, which we won in a war against them a hundred-plus years ago.

Please buy a history book. The US did not fight Mexico over Texas. Texas fought its own war and was an independent nation. Your understanding of what went down in Palestine is flawed as well (Yes, it was called Palestine before 1947).

The Arab states have attacked Israel in all out war twice. Israel beat them back both times. If the Arab states wish not to lose land, then, they should refrain from aggressive war against their neighbor. Of course Israel wants a buffer of land between her and her violent dysfunctional neighbors. Palestinian refugees only exist because other Arab states will not take these people in with the express intention of causing chaos. Israel fought side by side with us in Vietnam, and is our only dependable ally in the Middle East. Israel is a functioning democracy with a functioning economy in that region. I think the Arab States surrounding Israel should spend more time emulating the Israeli democracy, and economy, and less time trying to kill them. Perhaps then there would be peace and prosperity in the whole region.

Way too many morons on this thread accusing Israel of stealing land. Go back to bible school, unless of course you're an athiest. The land was "given" to them in rhe first place by God, when he used Moses to lead his "chosen" people "their land". Which of course they lost. But it was given back to them after WW2. England won the land after defeating the Ottoman Empire, and gave the land to the Jewish state officially by UN recognition on May 14, 1948. Actually the promised land promised to Abraham from God's covenant runs from the Mediterrainean Sea on the West to the Euphrates River on the East with a Northern boundary of Palestine at Hamath 100 miles North of Damascus to the Southern boundary at Kadesh, 100 miles South of Jerusalem. I guess by those standards that means they have property rights that they aren't even taking. Imagine America giving away New England territories to the East, and everything West of the Rockies. Because the Native Americans and Mexicans needed somemore land to call their home. Now imagine them still wanting more land and lobbing rockets Missouri or Pennsylvania, into buses and trains and neighborhoods, to kill innocent women and children. Would we sit by and watch or go in after the violators? Israel is not the problem here bigotted Musims are. Actually the country behind almost all violence in the Middle East is Iran. So rag on them for a while, quit being do damned ignorant, that you don't truly know the facts, or where to look for them, or just shut the hell up!
