First Catalonia outlawed bullfighting, which the Economist likened it to a German state banning wurst or a French region condemning berets.
Now Peru's minister of culture has said the sport is "terrible" and that it causes excessive suffering for the animals.
So is bullfighting on the way out? Is it a "tradition of tragedy," as PETA claims, that kills 250,000 bulls annually?

Activists who gathered in Lima last week to protest the mistreatment of bulls would seem to agree. "Bullfighting promotes violence, torture and cruelty to animals for no reason," William Soberon, of the Anti-Bullfighting Front of Peru, told La Republica. "We're not in the colonial era."
Peru's newly appointed minister of culture, Susana Baca, said she felt sorry for the animals and that she cried when she once attended a cockfight. "I've never been to a bullfight but from the little I've seen in the media, I know it's terrible and I had to close my eyes," she said on the program "Buenos Dias, Peru."

But protests against bullfighting are nothing new in Peru. And comments by Baca that she would analyze the practice during her tenure quickly sparked controversy.
Bullfighter Fernando Roca Rey told La Republica that bullfighting should be seen as a cultural event and that "the minister can give her opinion, but that cannot be applied to the whole country." Bullfighting celebrations have been held in Peru since 1766 and the Plaza de Toros de Acho bullring is the oldest in the Americas and second-oldest in the world, reports AFP.
And the Spanish government recently dealt a blow to efforts to outlaw the sport when it ruled that bullfighting is an "artistic discipline and cultural product." The country's Ministry of Culture will now be responsible for the "development and protection" of bullfighting, a move that supporters hope is a step toward protecting the tradition from further regional bans.

Bullfighting is also practiced in Portugal and the south of France and is widespread in Latin America. Mexico City's Plaza Mexico arena is the biggest in the world with seats for up to 55,000.
And while public opinion might be swinging away from bullfighting — a poll last year for El Pais found 60 percent of Spaniards did not enjoy bullfighting — the sport still has big-name supporters. Peruvian novelist and Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa campaigned to convince UNESCO to classify bullfighting as part of Spain's national heritage.
And in novelist Ernest Hemingway, the sport found one of its most enduring voices of support. The art of the bullfighting, Hemingway wrote in "Death in the Afternoon," "is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor."

Ban all cruelty to animals!
If you eat meat, you promote cruelty. These bulls lead a far greater life than your average cow in America.
Fighting bulls live a privileged life until they meet their fate in the bullring, and whether or not you like that fate, it's better than becoming a veal steak which is what would happen to most bulls anyway. Bullfighting is a cultural tradition in many Latin countries and is one of the first things one thinks about when Spain is mentioned. There are thousands of other causes far more worthy of fighting for....leave the Spaniards and Latin Americans alone. There are far worse things that happen in the United States every day.
Just because bad things hapen beyond one particular problem, does not mean we should not devote attention to that problem as well. It is possible to fight all things one sees as immoral.
then don't eat meat. and if you do eat meat, that doesn't make it okay to ALSO kill bulls and create even more cruelty. Leave all non-human animals alone
@Jared, just to clarify.... but veal is a baby cow that is penned and unable to move to make its muscles weak and thus more tender and tastier. A bull can never become veal due to it's age, treatment, and most importantly its species.
@Katie I believe you are taking his words too literally. I believe Jared was referring "bull calves" and the fact that they will most likely never become an adult bull due to the veal market. In my limited experience I do know that some if not most dairy farms castrate and pen the male calves (steer) and sell them off to the veal market. Also, the term "cow" is meant to be used for female cattle. Just to clarify.

BTW, I also lived in Spain for a while and I fully support (and enjoy) bullfighting. Banning bullfighting in Latin America or on the Iberian peninsula would be akin to banning baseball here in the states.

Erin, so you would let the bull meat become coal in the future, but not eat it. At least it should be part of the carbon cycle now, and feed living beings. What did the animal ever do to you to deserve that kind of death, and not a quick knock out at a slaughterhouse? And it is not a cultural, but religious festival based on the ancient Mithra cult; no comment on that religion, but many who watch bullfighting have divided allegiance at best; certainly it should not be part of the festival of seeing the Virgin Mary on a pillar.
You don't need meat to survive. Check out a disease called PKU. Anyone with it cannot eat meat because of the protein, people can be allergic to protein and I haven't had meat in five yrs. :]

Appearances are not always as they seem. I for one think that bullfighting is fine. Those bulls that are bred for fighting are not just plucked from any field, there is a certain amount of respect that goes towards both the bull and the matador. It's quite an intimidating sight to see a bull face to face. We must remember that this isn't some new fad, this is a centuries old tradition that unfortunately some idealists are trying to change because it's "image" isn't politically correct.
Banning all cruelty to animals...not sure that's possible unless you're a Jainist. While I agree that cruelty should be banned, this isn't an instance of cruelty. It's more of a sacrifice, possibly for the matador as well.

When the merciful God created them, He meant that they won't suffer, since He gave them to us for food. I had a strange feeling the other day, that the plants, trees, flowers, and grass have been programmed to gladden the human soul! The thing with that is that WE know that we are inflicted harm on other creatures, we have other ways to survive; non human animals aren't going to think about the pain their prey becomes.
Instead of banning bullfighting altogether, why not simply change the rules around? Bullfighting has been in existence for what, five or ten years? Since it's been around so long the traditionalists would make it difficult to ban the sport. So why not just compromise with them? I doubt they'd have a problem with taking away the killing of the bull as the outcome, given the alternative.
Bullfighting has been around way longer than that! Try hundreds of years! The Spanish introduced the practice of fighting on foot around 1726.(WIKIPEDIA). The fact is many cultures value animals differently or people for that matter! I eat meat and will Forever! I hunt and will Forever! (Try and stop me!?!) People have that don't try to or have to provide food for themselves sit at their computers with their fingers in their nose waiting for something to complain about. I will gaurantee you when the .... hits the fan they will be some of the first to go or be begging me for a sliver of meat!

As long as the bull is later eaten does it really matter? Regarding cruelty, when humans in a jail holding cell (false arrest, holding cells are not jail unless you consider a death camp jail) have comforts afforded to a dog collected by animal control perhaps I would have more sympathy for Bull.

Bulls must be 4 years old to enter the Corrida. All other bulls (and cows) are raised in these wide open spaces until slaughtered for meat. A few times a year (per location) a bull is pardoned during a fight and left to stud. They can live to 25 years old.

They should just change the rules. I mean when was the last time a bull won? They need to even out the playing field. The matador should only be alowd to have a lasso and pocket knife, the bull should be covered with sharp spikes and daggers. The dance betweeen matador and bull is art. Portuguese bull fighting is probably the happy medium for a style but if assistants to the matadors are limited, then it becomes more fair (if you can call it that). Tradition will leave its remnants in the future no matter what we do to try and curb it.
For example:
Football was nearly banned in the US because it was deemed to be too violent at the time (a few deaths occurred). As you can see, it has not died.
Car Racing has evolved from being incredibly dangerous to rather safe though it does still carry that potential.
Regulations have been passed to protect thoroughbred horses. While deaths of horses still do occur, they are better cared for than before (one could argue; i'm indifferent on it)
When the odds too heavily favor the matador or the bull, it does become barbaric in a way. When it is rather fair, then it becomes more of a hunt than a massacre.

No the bull does not get a chance. He does NOT come out of the fight alive. I watched one (not by choice – I was a child) and one of the bulls was lying on its back with blood coming out of its mouth, blood coming out of the multiple "spears" that he had been stabbed with, he was screaming before they administered the final blow. I'll never forget it. He doesn't stand a chance, he's not there by choice, he's WEAKENED before he even goes in there by 2 or 3 "spears" already stabbed before he comes out. The bullfighter is not a hero and this is not a sport, it should be banned by all civilized countries.
Cruelty to animals as a spectacle should be banned, tradition or not. I have never attended a bullfight, but I've seen photos of the bulls with swords stuck into them and blood pouring down their sides. They don't show you the disemboweled horses screaming in agony. And yes, I am a vegetarian, have been since 1972.
If they want to make it a real manly spectacle, do it as the ancient Minoans did it: a man (or woman) in a loincloth lets the bull run at them, grabs the horns, and somersaults over the bull's back as he tosses his head. Now that's a sport, and it doesn't hurt anyone except maybe those who volunteered for it.

People are condeming a cultural tradition from the point of view of their own (different) culture. It would be similar if the Dutch condemed Americans for driving their cars and burning too much fossil fuel which contributes to air pollution.... Change the sport to make it less dangerous to the bulls: flag-bull fighting. Outfit the bulls with a decorate cape much like the matadors wear, with velcro (hook and loop) fasteners around it to which are attached flags. I think it would take a higher degree of courage and talent to get close enough to rip one off than to jab a long pole in the side of the animal; this way, you keep the tradition, make it more humane, and increase the prestige of the matador.

I watched a bull fight in Seville, Spain a few years ago. I was stunned how utterly sadistic, cruel and useless it was. If the bull had half a chance then maybe it would be ok, like if the bullfighter got killed half the time that would indicate it was an even fight. But the way it is is nuts. Guys on armored horses come out and stab the bull in the neck with spears to cut and weaken it's neck muscles. Then the bull fighter leads it around the ring to exhaustion. Then the bullfighter finally kills the bull with a sword. In reality, the bull has little chance to fight. It is attacked unmercifully for an hour before finally being put out of it's misery. Every once in a while a bull actually gets a hit on a bullfighter. but that is so rare that it is news when it happens. That is how one-sided the "fight" is. "Bullfighting" (it's not really fighting, just torture and killing) is just a left over from ancient days when fighting nature was the way to prove manhood. Nowdays it is just an unbelieveably cruel activity. Anyone who participates in it is simply a sadist, period.
Pretty much any enterainment with animals these days should be considered cruel. It is just for human entertainment. The animal gets absolutely nothing out of it.
And you missed the pregame prep, they put a bit of vaseline on the bulls eyes to weaken its vision, they sometimes shave the horns (the bull is used to an X length horn, you shorten it by an inch or two and resharpen ), and then they whack it on its sides with a sand bag, leading to internal organ injuries and/or reduced respiratory function, this is a well known fact. After that the bull gets led to the ring, facing the "picadores" armed with lances that you mention and then the "banderilla" crew, or a Fortin Crew, purpose of the first two is to cause blood loss and weaken the bull, the Fortin crew will just weaken the bull via wrestling it to the ground, Once the brave matador starts his thing he is facing one tired bull.

I have been to Spain (specifically Malaga and Seville) during St Jean Baptiste.... Major bullfighting holiday.. To be honest, it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. However, It was barbaric and cruel, but its a part of a culture, not that it makes it right. I dont know if it should be banned but If you dont like it, dont watch it. Each country has the choice to do what they want... I support it either way and I cant say I wouldnt go and see it again.....

In bull fighting the bull does win, I was at one where the matador got gored right through the mid-section and we saw on the news later that night the guy ended up dying. As long as they are still using the meat from the animals and not wasting it who cares. They are animals that are below us in the food chain. There are several people on here making some very ignorant statements and bold faced lies! Here's the facts: bulls used in bullfights are tortured before they ever even enter the ring in order to "weaken" them, they are kept in darkness, vaseline is smeared in their eyes, they are beaten over the kidneys with sand bags, often they have darts and bricks thrown at them as well! Once they enter the ring the Picador's job is to sever the spine of the bull, they attempt this as many as 20 times, causing the bull horrendous pain and loss of blood, the bulls suffering goes on for nearly an hour or more in the ring, at the very end the bulls ears and penis are cut off as trophies while they are still fully conscience! Horses that the picadors ride are often gored as well, that is why they put blankets over them so the audience won't see the impaled horse. In Quito, Ecuador there are two-week long festivities around Dec 6th, including bullfights where they bring fighters from Spain and other countries. The festivities are awesome (parties in the street, clubs etc into late night). People skip their job to go attend a bullfight. For some, it is about the bullfight, for others it is about drinking and meeting girls. I was in the second camp, couldn't care less about the fight but I loved the environment. I also have a friend who practiced bullfighting. Standing in front of a bull is no cakewalk let me tell you (from personal, deeply stupid experience).
Anyway, I'm torn on this one. I agree with the cruelty to animals argument. No need to make an animal suffer, since the poor guy doesn't even know why he is there. But to eliminate bullfighting from these particular festivities is akin to eliminating fireworks on the 4th of July. Perhaps the solution is not to kill (or wound for that matter) the bull..

The comments on here from people supporting meat eating and in this case bullfighting are the text book definition of ignorance. Eliminating fireworks on the Fourth of July is a FANTASTIC idea! Then people and pets wouldn't get injured, nor would entire homes get burned to the ground. If the trend continues, bullfighting will likely fade away. To start demanding an end to bullfighting (usually by activists in other nations) will only inflame the debate and cause a backlash which would delay the end of bullfighting. If another culture demanded that we give up eating beef because cattle are holy and should not be eaten we'd tell them to go to h ell.... What gives anyone in the US the right to demand cultural changes in another nation?

The differance between bull fighting and our food from beef cattle is that the beef cattle aren't cruelly tortured over an extended period of time like the bull is. There death is very quick and sure. Yea, I'll eat a hamburger, but I don't get a kick out of watching a poor animal tortured to death.
You probably need to research factory farm practices. The life of cattle on factory farms is not without a long period of suffering and often the death is not so quick and painless. But you never go to a slaughterhouse and you can enjoy a hamburger with a clear conscience... out of sight, out of mind.
That's just baloney. How many factory farms have you visited, or have you gotten your information from a couple of TV shows or movies that targeted a few farms with poor reputations. Most farms don't mistreat animals as you suggest in your broad sweep. But to make this matter worse, the bulls killed are raised on farms and treated pretty harshly before undergoing their public torture and slaying. At least the farm cattle in the U.S. aren't tortured to death. Oh, and yes, I have been to a bullfight in Monterrey, Mexico. Pretty brutal and bloody. I can't imagine it continuing in countries much longer-the current younger generation will probably have no interest in continuing it as they mature.

Does anyone ever bring up education when getting in these debates? I always bring up one's schooling (private or public) from pre-k to high school and how animal rights have never had an agenda in a child's development... I actually think since being environmentally conscious is so in style these days the people who have no mind for the cruelty aspect would agree that raising animals for feed is extremely wastelful as well as detrimental to the environment...............I really feel that alot of you meat eaters have been conditioned so as to keep the beef/dairy industry/lobbyists relevant.. I went to school in Spain for a year and went to a bull fight. As someone who is a lifelong hunter and who has also done a lot of trapping, it was a bit shocking for a foreigner. But, the bulls are revered in that country and it's part of their amazing culture and traditions. We should respect other cultures even if we don't understand them! To some extremists owning a pet is cruel. Bull fighting will fade away someday, as much of our youth rather play on their iphones and xboxes or go to the mall. Someday we'll all be exactly same and nothing will offend anybody, won't that be fun.
I think as long as the bulls are wearing gloves and head protection and, of course, have a qualified veterinarian present, they should be allowed to fight.

I am diabetic. I follow a strict diet (which isn't bad!) which includes veggies, fruits, legumes and fish all of which I love. Slaughtering cattle for human consumption, bullfighting, fur farms, etc., it is all cruelty to animals no matter how you slice it (NO pun!). The day will NEVER come that all people will be vegan/veggietarians, but we can certainly be more humane in the way we kill for food. I especially oppose killing for entertainment, which is what bullfighting is all about, and for sports. Trophy hunting is horrible, and a chicken (again, no pun) way of hunting. Mankind is so UNkind when it comes to animals and the humane treatment of them.
So I say ban bullfighting, because it's killing for a sport, and it's so cruel since they do not die quickly. They are pinned first, then if the sword isn't precise, it's a lingering death.

At least the bull has a chance to attack the bullfighter, and to kill him if the bull gets really lucky. Cases in which the bull shows an immense and intense bravery, the bull gets indulted or pardoned which means he gets a chance to go back to the ranch and continue to pass on his genes. The bullfighter deserves his own distinction as well...fighting a 500 kilo fierce beast is no easy task, any little mistake means leaving the digestive system on the sun-bathed sand during a glorious Sunday afternoon right in front of hundreds of horrorized ticket-paying fans.
Nevertheless, we prefer to kill this culture facet of many countries as it is way too far from our Bambi mentality.

Yes; it should be banned. Fighting animals to the death is an archiac way of thinking that should have gone out with the dark ages. People eat meat and slaughterhouses are horrible, etc., etc., etc.... We abuse, torment and destroy our fellow beings on this planet in a myriad of creative ways. However, you have to do what you can and gradually things change. If people really took a few minutes to understand what a bull undergoes during a "bullfight," they might feel differently. Actually; if humans took a few minutes to ponder much of what we do to animals on a daily basis we might have a conscience to care and stop. The fate of animals is a global problem and I am not going to be quiet because it is not in my country. It is morally repugnant to take pleasure out of the torment and suffering of an animal. Period. There is not room for discussion or other opinions on this matter.

I am not so sure it should be banned. I feel that the way animals in America ( yes here!) are treated FAR worse when raised for food. Watch the videos on you tube of how these bulls are raised. They basically live like a wild animal, in herds, little human contact, until they are mature enough to meet their fates. It is really not a bad life. Then, go watch some videos of the way dairy cattle, veal calves (by-products of dairy farming), and feedlot beef are raise. Then, steel up your nerves and look up slaughter videos at the large packing operations. Watching the bullfight, brutal as it may be, will likely seem like a better fate. If you think your beef ( or any meat really) made it to your plate all humanely and painlessly, you will be horrified. I nearly fainted from shock when I first viewed this. If I were a cow, I would pray to be born on a fighting bull ranch, to be raised by my mother, and enjoy the world, before arriving at my fate.
And for anyone who thinks that these bulls would be all friendly and docile, that they must be tortured to fight, you are wrong! Bulls by nature are very territorial and willing to fight. They have been bred for centuries to retain their wildness, and for their willingness to fight. These are very unique bloodlines that are very very different than your average gentle docile Holstein cow.
Yes, I think it is brutal and maybe it is time we evolve away from it, but we all know it is unlikely to go away any time soon. But, watch some clips about factory farming, and you may realize that just eating your dinner every day causes exponentially more suffering than bullfights.

Put it to a vote. If the people in Spain or Latin America vote to outlaw bullfighting, then outlaw it and let your grandkids read about it in the history books. If they vote to keep it, butt out and mind your own business, Team America: World Police.
It isn't sport to take a farm animal into a large arena and slowly stab it to death in front of cheering crowds, it's disgusting. Outlaw it.

Outlaw it! Watching an animal slowly die to death is horrible no matter how well you think it was treated up to that point. What do they do with the bull after the "fight". And don't give us any of that "cultural heritage" stuff. In America, the South claimed slavery was part of their culture, too but it didn't make it right.

Mlove, you are as wrong about bullfighting and bulls as anyone could possibly be! Of COURSE slaughter for meat is cruel, barbaric, horrific, but not even that compares to the long suffering of the bull in bullfigting. As I mentioned above the bull is kept in darkness for DAYS and beaten and incapacitated before ever entering the ring, the cowardly humans who created this "fight" designed it in such a way, that the bull is significantly weakened without killing him, you don't seem to grasp the kind of suffering that is involved in that, the bulls suffers for DAYS, DAYS , and you seem to think having their penis and ears cut off while alive is a jolly picnic! And as to your claim that bulls are not docile , that is an extremely ignorant statement. As a child I played with my barbie dolls in a field with bulls the size of houses, they are docile animals, in fact a chi hua hua is more frightening to me than a bull! Susan, why are you on here arguing about my opinion? Seriously? I have actually studied quite extensively on the subject and was even able to visit a ranch that bred the bulls, in Spain several years ago. You come on here and claim I am ignorant based on what you know! If there was a legitimate way to end the culture of bullfighting, I would fully support it. I am not saying it is a good thing. I am saying that just as bad, if not worse fates happen to animals raised for food on massive scale. why not try to end factory farming? You would spare billions of animals a horrible cruel fate that way.
I have spent quite a lot of time around cattle, grew up on a ranch in CO, and have worked cattle on horseback many times. Most beef bulls are rather docile, you are correct. But study the lineages of the cattle in Spain bred for the ring, they are different. They are quite unlike what we are used to in America.

Put the matador out there without weapons and lets see what happens then. I understand bullfighting is viewed as an ancient tradition, but just because something has been done a long time does not make it right. There were human slaves for thousands of years. Was that right? Many men beat their children and wives. This is wrong also. Being slowly stabbed to death for someone's enjoyment is wrong.

There is no argument about this question. Half of you people make me sick. This is sick and should be illegal end of story! This animal is taunted and literally stabbed to death and brutally murdered. I seen a video of a fight and my mouth dropped and i started crying. It makes me want to cry just typing this, how could someone do this to any living creature? The one i saw the poor thing could go no more but was still being taunted at and humiliated and dripping with blood still fighting to stand, then the sick person thrust the sword into him and he screamed.
