Debate: Has President Obama lived up to his Nobel Peace Prize?

The following is an excerpt of my interview with Thorbjørn Jagland, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which is responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize. In this section, Jagland speaks about whether Obama lived up to the expectations of the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded in 2009. The rest of the interview will be published later today covering topics from the tragedy in Norway to Europe's role in Central Asia.

Has President Obama lived up to his Nobel Peace Prize?

Yes, I think so. I’m as convinced as I was when he got it that he deserved it for many reasons. He changed so many things in American foreign policy; During three months’ time, he, for instance and that’s what’s the main reason why he got the prize, namely that he paved the way for new negotiations with the Russian Federation about nuclear arms. If you look at the will of Alfred Nobel that goes directly to what he said that the prize should go to the person that has worked for - he called it reduction of standing armies but in today’s terms it means arm control and disarmament. So President Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize because he paved the way for such negotiations; he said that he was willing to discuss the nuclear shield of Europe and therefore, the Russians were beginning to come back to the table and negotiations started again.

We couldn’t avoid giving the prize to President Obama given the will of Alfred Nobel and what he did on this point. But, there are other things also, which we looked at, for instance, the fact that he started immediately to build bridges to the Muslim world throughout the time.

I think that's a fairly easy question to answer–no. There have been much more deserving people, much more deserving women for that matter, that have gone ignored in the past. This year, the Nobel committee finally got it right. These three women are more than deserving of the prize. For more on the Nobel Peace prize this year and the winners, check out http://www.democracynow.org. They had a whole segment about it today.

lets just remove the politically correct bull and call it what it was..Obama President because he is black! not chris rock black but dark skined enough to pass....He got the peace prize because he won the election! period hes a puppet has been one since he started running for the office

Not sure what politically correct bull you're talking about Sadstatesofaffairs. There are a lot of legitimate reasons to believe that Obama didn't deserve the Nobel; but, :because he's black" isn't one of them. So Ralph Bunche, Albert John Luthuli, Martin Luther King, Jr, Anwar El Sadat, Sir William Arthur Lewis, Desmond Tutu, Wole Soyinka, Derek Walcott, Toni Morrison, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, and Wangari Maathai all won the Nobel just because they are black? They're all Nobel recipients, they're all black. In case you don't realize it, saying that the only reason Obama got it was because he's black makes you look like a racist.

JennyMK89, the way you wrote your response, are you saying that women aren't people too? If they are, in fact, people, why call them out separately from people?

STClown – Get a life. Look at the other replies. Are others making stupid remarks like yours ? No. You're along in the wilderness of liberalism with rose colored glasses on. I for one agree with many others... He done nothing to deserve the "Peace" prize except to continue digging deeper in a war people in the US increasingly don't want.

The three women are fine. But, do you think the Wall-Street Spring will topple down Obama and his administration?...now, that is the question of this century.

I'm betting it will be the last time they give out the prize based on future potential.

Sorry, as an American maybe I'm to close to it, Me all I see is a reward for the lies he told, and sionce has gone back on. In some cases like the wars he says now that he definatly was giong to advance the wars all along!
Under such terms Hitler should have gotten a nobel!

        October 7, 2011 at 11:17 pm |
      • BK

I don't think he should have gotten it either, I think the conflicts he perpetuated/started during his time outweight the good things he did.
However, please stop comparing him to Hitler. Such comparisons are generally the last resort of a stupid mind and pretty much instantly destroy your credibility.

BK - I bet you didn't mind too much when Bush was called Hitler. The shoe is on the other foot with BO in office and the libs do not like it when you disparage their holy ones name.

      • Semper Fidelis

Well he sure as heck wouldn't have got it if they'd known that some of his "potential" plans included:
        # Invading Pakistan illegally to kill OBL
        # attacking Yemen illegally to murder Al Awlaki
        # killing innocent civilians with drones in Libya in the hopes they'd hit Gadhafi
        # killing innocent people in Pakistan with drones
        # deliberately encourage the Arab spring knowing [as we all do] that it, by it's very nature, puts Israel in harms way.

Obama was nominated for the NPP BEFORE hewas elected. So what did he get it for? Brealing up street fights in Chicago??????????????????????

Richard, The death tolls of the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld war is still running. If they did not start the wars we would not be there, WMD my butt. So those past lives and the lives to come as a direct reaction to Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld warmongering will always be laid at the initiators feet in my book. Blaming President Obama for this is like blaming a Fire Chief for the fire some moron started!! Sorry, 90,000 lives is a lot and I will forever remember the warmonger team Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld!!!!

Future potential........? Amazing how the individual (Alfred Nobel) the original prize was named for invented one of the most destructive substances (dynomite) on earth. Our "Peace Prize" winner busily leads this nation into total disaster. He kills terrorist U.S. citizens from on high in the atmosphere with Hellfire missiles. He expands a war in Afganistan he promised to get us out of. He participates in an illegal war in Libya without the consent of anyone. His administration supplies thousands of weapons to Mexican drug cartels who kill thousands of Mexican people and our own law enforcement officers. And we're supposed to believe the problem with our nation rests with the "bitter clingers" holding on to their guns and bibles?
No, fellow Americans, the problem lies with those of us who voted for Hope and Change. We certainly have achieved the change that our Dear Leader evisioned for us....and he's not through yet! As for Hope... it is certainly fading for those of us who refuse to accept the folly that is Barak Obama.

      • ANN

OBAMA HAS DONE A FAR BETTER JOB THAN GEORGE BUSH, WHAT I THINK IS THE PROBLEM HERE IS OBAMA'S SKIN COLOR. HE'S A BLACK MAN . HE JUST NEEDS TO LET THE JOB GO.

        October 9, 2011 at 3:52 pm |
      • Palooza

Amen, Vegas Rage. They awarded it based on the hope that he would change our foreign policy. he has not. He was greeted like a rock star across the globe during his campaign (and why does a candidate for US office go speak in Europe?!). Clearly he has not earned that–he has not changed foreign policy, nor has he negotiated any ground-breaking, historic treaties. Arms reductions negotiations, while good, have been ongoing since Reagan ended the Cold War. Obama has continued Bush's foreign and defense policies because, I think, once he took office he realized how big a job it was and, as someone whose resume consists of "community organizer" realized he had no clue what to do. Bottom line is that it's not the business of Europe or the Nobel committee to try to influence how we as Americans approach our relationships with nations around the globe.

        October 9, 2011 at 6:05 pm |
      • Palooza

PS to ANN: SO sick of hearing this or that is because of Obama's skin color, good or bad. He is a man first, and his color is secondary. Your intent isn't even entirely clear. Do you mean he won it because of his skin? Or people just say he doesn't deserve it because of that? Either way, I immediately dismiss the replies of anyone who says "It's his race!" That sort of knee-jerk reaction is a complete and total cop out.

Did anyone read the article? Obama paved the way...and got done...a nuclear arms treaty with Russia. He also stopped the insane Star Wars program. These are huge accomplishments. But then, all you learned scholars must know a lot better than the Nobel Organization.

        October 7, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
      • Ian

@sane, what are you talking about?? "Star Wars" was proposed in 1983 and was dissolved in the early 1990s. Nuclear Treaty with Russia? The Cold War is considered to have ended in 1991, and there have been 15 major nuclear arms treaties with Russia in past, arguably all of them more important than the one in 2010, given that again, the Cold War ended in 1991. Also, the "article" is an excerpt from an interview with Thorbjørn Jagland, it is not a scholarly or unbiased assessment, it is the point of view from a committee chairman on weather or not they made a major mistake of huge political consequences...surprisingly he said "no".
So yes, many of us did read (and understand, and then independently think about) this article, now ask yourself, did you?

Wow. I want some of the stuff you've been smoking. It definitely alters reality. Obama hasn't done squat to promote world peace, other than making America weaker for the next time we are attacked at home or abroad. Obama ranks right up there with Carter as a president that placates the bullies of the world while he is in the limelight, only leading to America paying a terrible price for his actions a few years down the road.

Such as, another military push in Afghanistan, expansion of drones missions including the killing of noncombatants, supporting the NATO bombings in Libya with the goal being to facilitate Western oil companies getting access to Libya's oil, support for Israel and failure to reverse that notwithstanding Israel's evicting Palestinians in East Jerusalem so that flats could be build for Israelis and with Israel doing the same in the West Bank, supporting the Yemeni dictator Saleh because he mouths the Obama line regarding "terrorism," etc.

What world are you living on?? He put this country deeper in debt! He paid tax payer dollers to Wall street in bailouts (which ended up in the bank accounts of the people who created the problems in the first place) as well as UNION CONTROLLED automobile companies, he threw government regulations in our face with Obamacare which by the way DID NOT LOWER THE COST OF HEALTH CARE BUT RAISED IT and has yet to come up with any jobs bill that will NOT raise our national debt! Bo-rack "Spend, Spend Spend" Obama has now achived front runner status as the WORST president in America's history! He wasn't qualified to get the job but thanks to ACORN and the sheer ignorance on the part of the mis-informed or ignorant youth (i.e. illiterate 18 to 30 year old book learned unemployed miscreants who have for the last few years been living off of government grants and Mommy & Daddy's credit card and actually believed him when he said he would give THEM more stimulus money) and the internet, the "messiah" was elected! Lived up to the Peace Award? How?? What war did he prevent? What people did he lead to salvation? What country did he save? Not ours that's for sure. Wake up from your dream state and see reality.

He is a waste no matter which way you look at it and no America is seeing how idiotic they were to vote for a black man because he was a black man. That is just as bad and not voting for a black man because he is black. Both come from ignorance.

Ugh. Please, enough about women being left out. Get off the cross, someone else needs the wood! Seriously, if women had stayed home and cared for their familes instead of shoving themselves down everyones throat to be "equal," we'd have a healthier society today. Just because women whine louder doesn't make them better, smarter, stronger or wiser.

@eli don't say that to a woman. Just because they have embryos, a womb, and produce milk THEY do not want to raise children anymore. Didn't you get the memo. Uh-uh! This is modern times dummy. Children are supposed to raise themselves in front of televisions and computers like in nature. Women are far, far too busy making money for all those bright shiny objects they see on the tele that they just HAVE to have in order to feel 'equal'. Get with the program. It's much better for women to feel 'equal' to men than it is for children to be raised properly as they have for hundreds of thousands of years. If men don't have to raise the kids, then neither do the women...so there!

I think he's completely deserving. He is a man of honor, dignity and courage. Since he has been in office, the governments of Libya, Egypt, and the Taliban have been dismantled. Talks with both the Israelis and the Palestinians have been opened
and not just a rubber stamp to either side. Equal pay for women, funding for stem cell research renewed, attempts to include all Americans in the American dream, the passage of health care reform, respect to all Countries, and on and on and on. If the Peace Prize is indicative of human rights, human dignity, and human compassion, then President Obama meets all those criteria. I am so proud to have him as our President and look forward to another four years under his leadership.

Obama uses military forces to resolve political problems. Alfred Nobel loathed destruction and the loss of lives, especially when his younger brother Emil and a few others died during an explosion in the family's factory in 1864.

Nobel spent his entire life inventing new weapons and profiting from their manufacture and sale. He had no problems with weapons, war, destruction, or making money from them.

The programs utilized in that operation which enabled the ability to do what the SEALs did were put in place by Bush. Obama did nothing but say "Yeah go ahead if he's there." It always makes me laugh how many civilians will proudly talk about Obama and the military when they themselves have no knowledge on the military and rarely served in uniform. Obama is a joke everyone of his policies have failed period, he's taken a bad situation and made it worse. If i told USAA that my way of getting out of debt was to keep spending I'd have been defaulted and bankrupt and chaptered. It's alright for a grand leader to do so though apperently.

GW Bush did NOT originate the Navy Seals. The Commander in Chief gets the credit, not the guy that let Bin Laden get away, and couldn't find him for 6 years while Bin Laden lounged in Pakistan.
Not the guy on whose presidential watch, we were attacked in the first place, on such a monumental scale. Bush was POTUS on 911. He gets credit for NOTHING.

        October 7, 2011 at 1:09 pm |

Pfc. R. – thanks for your service. I served 20 years as a naval aviator and you're right on target. "P" doesn't get it. You weren't saying Bush created the Seals; you simply stated he put things in place for them to do what they did. These enablers will say anything, howver silly or crazy, to prop up a failed leader such as PBO.

        October 7, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
      • p

No, Rob I do get it. Blame everything on Obama.
Apologize for GWB, the 911 POTUS whose incredible blunders caused so much loss of life. I pray for a POTUS to have more respect for our precious men and women in the armed forces than that, and not send them into harm's way foolishly. You want to "credit" GWBush for taking Bin Laden out. Fine. Then credit all our military and all our presidents throughout history. They deserve credit in the same way Bush does. Bush had 6 years to get Bin Laden, failed(one of his many failures), and ended up saying "I don't think about him (Bin Laden) much". This POTUS took care of bidness and
NAILED HIM! – And this POTUS did not require a phony "Mission Accomplished" banner, after the deed was done.

        October 7, 2011 at 1:41 pm |
      • Rob

The "P" man keeps ranting in an obvious attempt to make the most noise, hoping it resonates. I give PBO credit for Bin Ladin while on his watch; however, it wasn't anything partiuclar he did. The govenment has been trying for a long time and it finally came to fruition; not because the Bush Administration sat around doing nothing. All of their efforts, both administrations, led to the result. Don't write the story to fit your blind faith in this president. 2012 will cure all this when PBO is shown the door.

        October 7, 2011 at 2:05 pm |
      • Bill

P, you can't have it both ways.

9/11 happened mere months after Bush Jr. took office. The groundwork for all that day was under Clinton.
bin Laden tagged due to the work of the military & cia over the last 10 years. The groundwork for that day was under Bush.

Either the groundwork is at fault, so Clinton gets the blame for 9/11 and Jr the credit for bin Laden, or the current President is at fault so Jr. get the blame & credit for both.

        October 7, 2011 at 2:41 pm |
      • Capn Kirk

Bill, you logic is flawed...if the Current POTUS gets credit/blame.....then Bush gets blame for 9/11 and Obama gets credit for Bin Laden. You see Bush was POTUS during 9/11 and Obama was POTUS when Bin Laden was killed.

If the previous POTUS gets credit/blame then Clinton would take blame for 9/11 and Bush would get credit for Bin Laden.

      • JJ

PFC R., by your name states your still a boot with much to learn. President Bush DID start the war but DID NOT start the programs that caused the Navy SEALs to conduct their operation that killed OBL. Spec Ops is Spec Ops, they fall under the authority of USSOCOM and by extention whoever is the Combatant Commanders of the theatre of operations. In order to engage in an act that is considerably illegal in internantional law would come from the President. You talk about how you laugh at those who have not served and how they dont have experience in the military, I laugh at you, you boot, try 9 years with 4 IN Spec Ops as an Operator, and then talk of 'experience' your just a step above civilians when it comes to military experience.

And No President Obama doesnt deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, which by the way, HE even stated himself!

Im not all thrilled with President Obama's administration and policies, but atleast Im sane enough to see that compared to what we HAD before, and what we HAVE now, I will take the present administration

You weren't saying Bush created the Seals; you simply stated he put things in place for them to do what they did...

^ Yet you can't say what these "things" are? That's pathetic.

Here is what Bush actually did, and it is specific:

-> He was warned by the CIA two months prior to the Sept 11 2001 attacks but *DID NOTHING*.

-> He oversaw the Tora Bora operation in which he and his incompetent stooges LET BIN LADEN GO.

-> After his two humiliating defeats at the hands of AlQaeda – he *GAVE UP*, and claimed he was no longer interested in finding Bin Laden.

-> He diverted the country into war in Iraq – based on the false assertion (guilt trip) that it was somehow related to Sept. 11.

-> He caused the death of several thousand other Americans due to his failed war in Iraq.

^ Now, unlike you, I've pointed out what Bush *actually did.*

If anybody remembers 1986 and the Iran Contra Hearings, it was Senator Al Gore who laughed at Oliver North for being so scared of a single man (who was named Osama Bin Laden). It was Al Gore who said that Oliver North was "overreacting" when Oliver North recommended the Osama Bin Laden be hunted down and killed. So, with all this knowledge and 8 years in office prior to GWB, how did 9/11 become GWB's fault?

It was Clinton/Gore who dismantled the "personal" on the ground intelligence system and went to a electronics system to save money. GWB spent his presidency rebuilding this personal intelligence system. There are 6 billion people on this planet and you are trying to find 1 - who is smart enough not to use electronics. So again, why is not catching Bin Laden the fault of GWB?

Finally, after the bombing of the Cole, the bombing of the Riyadh barracks, the bombing of the US embassies in Africa - all by Osama Bin Laden, the best Clinton/Gore could do was to launch a few Tomahawks into Afghanistan. They knew Osama was a extreme threat to the US and yet they never hunted him prior to 9/11. So who is to blame again?

Study history before trying to refrence it!

        http://articles.cnn.com/2011-05-02/world/bin.laden.raid.timeline_1_bin-raid-defense-official?_s=PM:WORLD

Notice that was FOUR YEARS AGO. GWB opened Guantanamo.

Further, I was with a REGULAR INFANTRY UNIT in '04 (it's always funny how everybody is an "operator" or "special ops" – every unemployed dude in my town for some reason is a "former Navy SEAL"), and after three weeks in country we found several thousand mortar rounds containing mustard gas. We cordoned off the area, some specialists came, and the next time we went back to that area, they were all gone.

As mentioned it was the Bush admistration that started the withdraw. Obama promised it in less than a year but infact increased troops till just not where his term is almost over and finally deciding to withdraw after Bin Laden gets killed. What if Bin Laden didn't get killed? Chances are there wouldn't be a withdraw, but infact a discussion to keep troops there longer because of Bin Laden's threat.

Luck got on Obama's side on the hit with Bin Laden. Pure and simple.

Libya = How the hell do you fly missions with US planes and pilots and not risk US lives???

Have you travelled worldwide since he came into power? I went to college in London (visited Berlin, Greece, Ireland & Holland in the mid 1990s). Back then any reasonable person knew that not all American's were the same or had the same viewpoints & many didn’t agree with all of the government policies.

Obama can say he's changing to world all he wants, but in London and in Holland he's a joke. The conversation in the pubs are that we put up a black president that was doomed to fail by his policies so that the next government could undermine

Try comparing what George did and Obama has done. 90,000 people VS Millions of People.......so who's bad now?....THINK ABOUT it.

Man you people are such hatters, you let Bush get away with bringing the country to the brink, and this guy comes in, to try
to fix it and get America back on its feet again. All this hate coming from the right is not good for the country, you should look up the facts before you start hating, he has done a lot, and most of all he saved Wall Street, and the money has been
paid back, I guess you didn't know that, and he also saved a lot of jobs. If you people were not so hateful things could get done in this country. The Democrats and Republicans used to work together thats how the country got strong, and the rich in the past were glad to help, they knew what it took to build this country and make it great. Now all this hate and you won't admit the real reason for such hate, the people are waking up now, that more could have gotten done if the Republicans were not so mad about our president being Black!!!

Republicans/Teabaggers don't want to admit his accomplishments simply because he's half black. I for one travel around the world and since he's been elected, I see tremoundous amount of positive change on how the world views the U.S, thanks to Obama.

How do you find Happiness, peace when you are out of work for so long?....moreover, instead of finding solution and creating jobs, Obama is praising the Wall-street spring?.....what a joke.

Let's quit propping up Obama. While legally elected, he wasn't experienced or prepared for the role. He lacks any sense of leadership and simply relies on articulate speeches as a surrogate. His sense of this country are in stark contrast to what America stands for. Let's call it what it really is – a huge miscalculation by the electorate. He's wrong for America on all fronts and the sooner he's history, American can heal.

To achieve greater peace, soletimes there is a need to fight for the right to peace. These thinks do not happen by itself. When you let things take its own course, you end up Rwanda, Darfur, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe. Why did people in these countries get massacred as the rest of the world sat on the sidelines and not intervene. As President Obama mentioned in his acceptance speech; it is sometimes essential to wage a war to get to the peace. He managed to get OBL and a whole slew of Al Queda folks. His policy approach to the middle east help Arab Spring achieve success. Past US Presidents would have likely stood with the dictators instead of the people. Yes; he can do more; but I think he has done enough to justify the peace prize he was awarded.

It's incredible that you know the "Arab Spring" is a beneficial thing to US interests. I think it will take a few years of hindsight to finally be able to lable the sweeping revolutions a success or failure...but something tells me that future U.S. Secretaries of State will be speaking out against beheading of adulterers and theives in Amman, Cairo, the West Bank, and Damascus once Sharia law in fully in effect.

So clinton is also to blame for the economy? Thats funny because under him we had one of the only surplus' in U.S. history. Also, the attackes were planned under him?? That might be true but remember that report that landed on Bush's desk? This report was CIA intelligence that said their is a risk of a terrorist attack and it might have something to do with planes. This was 2 months before 9-11 and last time i checked Bush was in office already. He failed to act on this and history tells what happened because of it. Stop with saying its us telling lies because you know a republican president messed up. Yes, Obama messed up on some things. Given his situation though, with all the tax cuts BUSH approved and failing economy by him, I dont think either side could fix it in this political scene now and just how deep we are in it. It really does take time.

The panel used the prize to make a political statement rather than reward accomplishment; their actions cheapened the award forever. It's like giving Michael Moore the Palm d"or at Cannes – it was obviously not the best movie made, they just wanted to make a political statement too. These prizes are devalued now.

No, Obama has not lived up to what was hoped, but that doesn't mean he didn't try, and it doesn't mean many people could have done better. More importantly, he didn't ask for it; it was given to him. In my opinion, it was a stupid idea on the part of the Nobel committee. The answer is yes! And this can be explained in two folds in terms of the president's leadership abroad and at home. For example, as far as the Iraqi wat is concerned, the president has honored a deadline to end the illegitimate Iraqi war and beginin the withdrawal of our troops from that conflict, giving the Iraqi people back their country and uniting our troops with their love ones once more. And in another year or so, we would have a complete withdrawal from Iraq.

Secondly, as far as the Afghan war is concerned, the president has boosted troop levels to speed up the process so that we can end this war that the GOP abandoned and prolonged to start their illegitimate Iraqi war. And more medals of honor have been awarded by this president than any other president since the Vietnam War, to our soldiers for their brave and heroic endeavors in battle in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Third, president Obama has helped to make America and the world alot safer by taking the bold initiative of sending our Navy Seals to take out OBL and recently al Awlaki. And furthermore, he has helped to restore America's image as leader of the free world because when the unrest escalated in Libya, he didn't do like his predecessor and rush to war, but he campaigned to get the world community,ie the European and Arab League and NATO on board on the same consensus with the same objective to enforce UN resolution to protect civilians and save thousands of civilian lives in Libya.

Fourth, although the Egyptian crisis occured prior to the Libyan crisis, the president's position was clear and consistent from the start in which he expressed America's unwavering support for the citizens of Egypt who were calling for democratic change. And though former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was defiant in meeting the protesters demands at the beginning, president Obama called upon him and put pressure on him to respect the protesters rights to demonstrate while working towards a speedy transition for democratic change.

Fifth, the president and the UN have worked together to bring free elections to Dafur where after a long history of brutal civil war, the condemned have gained their independence and are heading in the direction of peace and stability. And the list goes on and on as to what president Obama has done abroad to earn the Nobel Peace Prize.

And when it comes to what the president has done at home, the list is endless as he has campaigned from day one for working class America, the poor and the elderly and for our service men and women in uniform. And whether it is comprehensive healthcare or fighting for extension of unemployment benefits for unemployed and struggling Americans during our economic perils or passing of legislation to see that our troops and their families are taken care of or protecting medicaid and medicare and looking out for our seniors by fighting to avoid a government, president Obama has been there for the American people every step of the way.

Secondly, when it comes to the healthcare legislation and financial reform and the issue of taxing the rich, president Obama never said that the rich were evil and should be punished. What has always been his position from the start is that there comes a time when the American middle class and the poor must be given a fair share because they have always been at the bottom of the class struggles with corporate America. And in a time of economic perils, the last thing we want to do is to allow the rich to continue to get richer at the expense of exploiting the middle class and the poor.

Finally, president Obama has been the most scrutinized and disrespected president in US history not because of his administration's policies but clearly because of the color of his skin. But despite the derogatory and outrageous name calling and all the insults and the disrespect he has received from the right and the mainstream media for two and a half years, not once has president Obama responded with anger or responded by throwing back insults at his accusers. No, he has continued to handle his job in the most professional of manner with class and integrity.

So has president Obama lived up to the Nobel Peace Prize? You bet! Obama/Biden 2012.

Giving PBO the Noble Peace Prize for potential is right in line with views such as you can't celebrate excellence because it might make someone feel inferior. This kind of madness has to stop. Obama should have refused the award because even he knows he didn't deserve it. This was simply a veiled attempt to make him look good by his enablers – fellow socialists. Shame on the Committee that made this decision. But America has FINALLY woken up and is seeing Obama for what he is – an abject failure, incapable of serviing effectively. America needs to eradicate this malaise and continue to fulfill its destiney as the shining beacon on the hill for the rest of the world.

  28. CNN's "Top 10 Nobel Prize Controversies" link

to time.com started at #3, vice #1, which was President Obama. Checked it again & it was intentional – html-coded to go to #3, first.

It's disconcerting to see CNN's deception, for the sake of their political bias. This is a major reason why people are cynical today. CNN's latest manipulation is yet another justification for distrust, or rejection of, news media.

CNN truly is a media wing of the Democratic Party.

Propaganda, calling itself 'news,' is unethical.

Too bad this benefits Lawmakers, because there needs to be a law against 'Journalistic Quackery.' It's as much fraud as infomercial snake oil salesmen on at 4AM.

This country we call a great democracy was once segregated by race and skin color because the oppressors felt that people of color deserved to be in bondage and should continue being oppressed. But thankfully there were brave and courageous leaders in our country, brave enough to step forward and condemn these evils while campaigning to help end racial segregation and discrimination, clearing the path for us to be a great democracy.

And yes, these courageous Americans are are deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize but what I also know is that these heroic and courageous Americans that went before us would never ever approve of the type of bigotry and hatred that you rightwingers have been expressing towards our president for two and a half years. And you can hate president Obama as much as you want because that is your choice however he is your president too and just keep in mind that as the saying goes, "united we stand, divided we fall." And since this topic is about peace, I would just like to pray for you people.

Sir I am very sorry but I have to disagree with everyone of your biased comments. You and the rest of the morons play the race card whenever the messiah is in the wrong. I voted for Clinton twice, Gore and Kerry because they had a track record and I could see that they loved this country. You supported and continue to support a man who spent 20 years in an ultra racist church and when he was called on it said I never heard him say those things (REALLY REALLY ), was introduced to politics by a self proclaimed domestic terrorist and when he was asked said I don't know him well he just lives in my neighborhood, hid his birth certificate and spent over a million dollars fighting not to show it, voted present a majority of the time in the state and federal senates to avoid responsibility, hid and is still hiding his school information. I don't feel like wasting time with anymore of the very very obvious shortcomings of your MESSIAH.

As for the prize he did not then nor now nor will he ever deserve it and in no way shape or form has he lived up to what the prize is supposed to stand for.

As for your claim that he has made international dealing better all he did was travel around the globe and apologize for us Americans.

In closing for everyone with a brain:

IF YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA IN 2008 TO PROVE YOU WEREN'T A RACIST PLEASE PLEASE VOTE FOR SOMEONE ELSE IN 2012 TO PROVE YOU ARE NOT AN IDIOT. ANYBODY IN THE USA BUT OBAMA/BIDEN2012

@Bullet319-Now I will admit to both by degree of bias (as I have children who are both partly Black) and buyer's remorse from re-electing Bush Jr. (as I personally chose both the lesser of two evils & gave the man a chance to clean up the mess he started-which he failed miserably in my opinion) before the following comments. I personally voted for Obama because of one simple point: I am tired of the failed policies and ideas that came from the Republican Party, which in my mind has indeed laid the groundwork that destroyed this once great country of our's and was/is still willing to give the Dems a chance. Now as far as the original argument of this article: No, he should not have been selected or even accepted the Nobel Peace Prize so soon after his election, in fact he should have politely refused it for another who was deserving of that. As to whether he is deserving of it now, I would argue yes. He has employed (smartly) the forces and resources necessary to quell the fighting in the Middle East with little to no risks with more of our servicemen. And under his leadership (again with those same military resources) killed the top men of Al-Quadi (incldg. Osama Bin Laden), ensuring a degree of peace from terrorism.

I'm sure your responses would all be positive like when Dick Cheyney said he had no regrets at all, none of you bothered to comment at all because he and GWB running this country into the ground and murdering thousands of our citizens in Afghanistan and Iraq didn't matter to you people. And the more these worthless rightwing politicians divide and destroy this country, you people still vote for them because of your prejudices. Just take a good look in the mirror next time you decide to scrutinize the president. Just look at yourself and ask what are you doing to make your community or your world a better place.

As for Bush and Cheney they were not perfect and made a lot of errors the major difference is they didn't blame it on someone else as your messiah is to this day anything that is not good he blames Bush. No. The only intended result was to satisfy the desire of a small number of Norwegian academics to poke George W. Bush in the eye. They got what they wanted, and, as a result, they made the prize meaningless. Did I ever like Bush? No. But I wouldn't destroy the integrity of a formerly respected international award just to vent my dislike.

It's comical, of course he has not,. But that's OK. The Nobel Committee is pretty silly and irelevant anyway. Foreign Policy had an interesting article about the future of way last month. The author argued that if you look at the numbe of people directly involved in conflict – aside for a few hot spots like Iraq and Afg – and the number of poeple directly affected by war, there are fewer people involved in war than at any point in the 20th century and the trendline is downward. None of it has anything to do with the Nobel Peace Prize. The problem though is people seem to assume that major war between nationa states is just out of question in future and there is a lot of hidden instability in one major power with a lot of rice. We might need to rethink that sometime in the next 30 years.

I think this whole "poll" is a silly question. Its not as if he asked to be awarded the prize. What should he have done? Turned the prize down? Or maybe he should have disbanded all branches of the nation's military under the pressure of living up to such a prize? Yeah...

I think the awarding was symbolic of a lot of things at that time in the world. Especially the world view point on the US.

Is anyone who has taken part in arguing about this a Nobel laureate themselves? Chill.

Perhaps I can help you with your phrase... President Obama is the most successful president in US history. And I'm not saying that because I voted for him but because he has had to deal with more deliberate roadblocks and policy delaying tactics by the GOP and their Tea Party than that dealth with by any previous administration in US history. And not to mention the deliberate lies and propaganda hitting the air waves by the mainstream media ( Particularly Republican owned and operated CNN, FOX, MSNBC and the likes of The Wall Street Journal), all helping to score political points for the rightwingteabags regarding the policies and leadership of the Obama administration.

And did I mention that this president has also inherited two unfinished and costly wars and the worst economic crisis in America since the Great Depression and an unemployment epidemic spreading across American like the bubonic plague? And let's face it, more has been accomplished by this administration in two and a half years than that accomplished by any previous administrations in US history. Obama best US president ever? It's not okay support a failing president despite the painful results. If this is the type of country you want, take if somewhere else. This isn't America; it's soft tyranny.

Obama hasn't proved to be a shining example, per se, but at the same time the decisions he's faced are so monumental that it would be impossible for anybody in his position to be a shining example. Jagland is right that his building bridges with the Russians is a big deal that too many have overlooked. And, though you can say what you want about the Bush family building bridges with Saudi Arabia, Obama has taken many steps to reach out to a number of countries and show restraint when other presidents would have gotten directly involved.

Obama's term so far has really been about cleaning up Cheney's ... errr, sorry ... Bush's mess and tried to bring the country back to the standards it had back in the 1990s.

Don't be silly. Everyone knows that laws are for everyone else to follow, not americans. Only americans are allowed to kidnap foreign citizens and imprison them on an island fortress without trial. Only americans are allowed to extra-judicially murder citizens around the globe, even their own citizens. Only the americans are allowed to attack a sovereign country, destroy it's infrastructure and kill thousands of people while calling it a 'kinetic military action' and not a 'war'. Only the americans are allowed to build and stockpile the worlds most devastating weapons of mass destruction.

If any other country were to do any of the above there would be war. The world is growing sick of Uncle Sam and the hypocritical rot that pervades the usa. The usa kills more civilians as 'collateral damage' with their foreign policy actions than all of the 'dictators' and 'terrorists' put together. Sick joke of a world we live in when the bloodiest hands get awarded peace prizes.

I voted for President Obama and I feel that even nominating him, let alone, awarding him the Nobel Prize, was ABSURD. What had the man done? It isn't a question of whether he did good or not; even if he did to good, there was nothing at that point to warrant even a nomination for the Nobel Prize. It just made no sense and I would guess that the President himself laments the whole thing for the same reasons. Mine isn't a judgement on the man; it's a critique of the wisdom of those who choose the nominees for and winners of the Nobel Prize, which makes moot the whole point of whether or not he "lived up to it", since it really shouldn't have been awarded to him in the first place.

So all the hate and lies you right wingers spreas across America each and everyday, how do you help your kid unravel the confusion when all he or she hears at home is that black people are bad, dirty, evil and criminals and so on and then when your kid goes to school, they discover that the kid they adore and like the most is the quiet black kid in the classroom? The one who they'd rather choose to be their best friend? How do you explain to your kid that you were lying to them all along about your stereotypes against minority kids in America?

And what are you going to do when the next black familiy moves into your neighbor or the next hispanic or Asian family? Where are you going to move to? Perhaps Alsaka? Well, guess what? Do you know who built the trans-continental railway in Alaska? That's right! African American slaves build the trans-continentalrailway in Alaska back in the late 1800's. Let's face it, we are a multi-racial country, rich in diversity and ehtnicity and just remember that our diversity is our strength and our strenght are in numbers. And just remember that if we as Americans cannot find common ground to live together and respect each other and if we continue to keep taking for granted the parts that make us whole as a nation, then we may wake up one day and discover that we are a nation in revolt, divided by our prejudices, bigotry and hate. The problem is that we are so divided depending on our party affiliation, so much that we forget to analyze or question the root causes of the issues related to wars. Why do the terrorists attack us? Why don't they attack other western countries such as France, Germany. Canada, to the extent they attack us or as often. These countries have the same lifestyle and values that we have.
Let's stop fighting over whether Bush was a batter president or Obama was and think as a person, not as a Republican or Democrat.

^ Why, he literally is responsible for it. (sending the Seals into Pakistan to get Bin Laden)

So history gives him credit whether he "accepts" or not.

re: It was the tools put in place before he got to DC.

^ LOL. Again, this is a laughable excuse for Bush's failure and Obama's success.

    Tools don't do anything.

It isn't the tool, it's the person who uses them.

He thinks "yes," but the voters are 80% no. And let's not forget that at the time of the award it's about what he HAD done, not what he might do in the future, so the author's argument is specious – saying that he's lived up to it. Pay me $1,500,000 now and see if I live up to it in the future, with no guarantees. Who wouldn't like a deal like that?

An award he got literally right after he took office before doing anything as the president. Prior to becoming president, he did nothing (he rarely even voted while in the senate) that would have deserved it. Obama being award the Nobel prize is a joke and cheapens it. Unless of course they are awarding it now on a speculative basis in the hope that the recipient will actually do something.

Obama, and I voted for him, getting the peace is an insult to everyone who's ever stood up for peace. Never mind not ending the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, he's done nothing to stop extrajudicial killings of suspected terrorists with CIA drone strikes, killing hundreds of civilians, mainly women and children. Then throw in Lybia, where in defending civilians at all costs, we've killed thousands of civilians in airstrikes. Where is the peace in all this?

The women who we awarded the peace prize have been fighting for peace longer than he was a Senator and president combined!

This goes to show you how politically motived they were in giving him such a prestigious prize to not even a 1 term President.

But then they gave Yassar Arafat a Nobel peace prize for being a Terrorist or was it secure his compliance to stop attacking Israel?

Yes. Of course. Problem is he did all of those things by continuing Bush's war policies. Let's check out your list:
-Nuclear weapons? He deserves the price for continuing negotiations that have been ongoing since we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
      - Stop a mass murdering dictator from cleansing a whole contry. Sure, I'll give you this one just because you spelled COUNTRY wrong. But again, by continuing Bush's policies.
      - Dismantle a terrorist organization. See the last 2.
      - Demand Palestinian statehood. So he earned a prize for alienating one of our most loyal allies and, if Palestinian statehood actually occurred, would guarantee another war in the Middle East?
      - Oversee stable transitions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Please see 1-3.

The only change we've seen from this administration is the name of the president.

Some of the choices are dubious (Al Gore), but a lot of them put some real skin into it: Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela (27 years in prison), Aung San Suu Kyi (house arrest for how long?), Elie Weisel (tireless avenger/seeker of justice for 6 million deaths), the Dalia Lama...

What did Obama do to deserve it, either then or now? If he'd untangled the Israel-Palestine problem or something similar, I'd be writing to the Nobel committee myself, but he hasn't done anything close.

Though I support Obama, the answer is still no. America still has soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan; NATO arbitrarily declared war on Libya and has been bombing cities; Syria, which is in a legitimate struggle, has been widely ignored by the international community; and the U.S. is fighting Palestinian statehood despite supporting liberty (I can understand this, and even agree with it somewhat, but the fact remains its rather hypocritical). And Obama hasn't been doing much to mediate conflicts anywhere else in the world either....

It is beyond me how a President can still deserve the Nobel Peace Prize when they reign terror on a whole part of the word with predator drones. Also, I think being a hypocrite on foreign policy to the scale that Obama has been is very unbecoming of a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. The answer to this one is a loud echoing "NO". There are many points that can be argued regarding the Obama administrations record but whether he earned his Nobel Prize for his (cough) future works I would not think is one of them. If the Obama cheerleaders can shake their pom pom and dance for this, they would support Obama no matter what he does or what his record finally becomes.

I keep hoping someone else in the Democratic Party steps forward for 2012. I was pro Billary in 2008 and I am pro Billary today. We voted for an idea in 2008. In my opinion the social organizer experiment is seriously over. His election marked a change in the very fabric of the greatest democracy known in history. No more are we still shredded by our ignorance, suspension, and hate. Now, indeed, I feel that Americans have returned to electoral high ground by voting for the quality of the candidate not the party or race.

Hillary is not the answer. Bill Clinton's house for every american policy has ruined our economy. Obama has combined his brand of socialism with a good portion of Clinton's administration, yet he hasn't had the luxury of a booming IT expansion. this has equated to massive failure and huge debt. Add to that Obama's idea of attempting to move Americans off legacy fossil fuels without first providing adequate alternatives just shows the tremendous downside a liberal president can have without the benefits of a booming economy.

since Obama cannot run on his record he's reduced to stirring up class warfare with the hopes he doesn't go down in history worse than jimmy carter. consider Obama the sports coach unable to coach to his team, instead his ego makes him try to transform his team into what he wants, which will never happen outside of a fairy tale.

I agree he was voted in because of an ideal, as a historic moment in time and it felt good. The problem was that Obama was not qualified. It was his promises for the future and what he was rather than his qualifications that got him elected. Obama in my opinion is a clueless, unqualified, egotist. I hate to say this but it seems like he has skated by on race most of his life (getting breaks and endorsements based on race rather than hard work and qualifications). We would not be in the situation that we are in today if Hillary/Bill had been voted into office in 2008 or if the Republicans had nominated Colin Powell.

I think that is my biggest regret in this whole mess is that Colin Powell did not become president (especially the first president of African American decent – which Obama is not). Once I got over the disappointment of Hillary/Bill not being nominated I had hoped that McCain would choose Powell as vice president and that Powell would then be president in 2012. If I had to pick one person in the Republican party that I respected it would be Powell.

Unfortunately, unless Hillary/Bill break ranks and challenge Obama (which I hope they do) then I am going to end up voting Republication (there is no way in heck I am voting for Obama given his record, $$$$ vacations, massive spending – wall street bailouts, payout scandals to campaign contributers (solar scandal), cluelessness, and his ego). His being an egotist I could stand. He could write about himself all day long (which I am sure he does for his post president books) as long as he got the job done.

I just have not figured out yet (barring a Democratic shake up – fingers crossed) who I am going to vote for in 2012. I wish there were stronger candidates.

I would like to see some wealthy American businessman establish an award, with a big ceremony and large cash amount, for presentation to a Norwegian politician, of whom we, in our sole discretion, approve, as a reward for all Norwegians who have all been good little boys and girls and elected someone we like. Think that might annoy some Norwegians?

Normally Peace Prize does not go to War Criminals. The prize is phony just like the International Court in Hague. The small time military men that got in our way are prosecuted for so called crimes and the big war criminals that caused deaths of millions and terrible misery, hunger go unpunished. Remember Nuremberg ? While Stalin was killing millions ,his cronies were passing judgment on others and operation Keelhaul ( our Western Allies ) placed over a million people in the hands of butchers. Not much has changed. Bush, Chaney , Rumsfelt write books and are being promoted by the media and their war crimes and crimes against the American people are not mentioned. if they were on the losing side they would have been hanged like they hanged Saddam, who was their patsie at one time. You can do anything if you have power.

Anyone still left on the Obama train has got to be blind, deaf and half dead. He didn't deserve the NPP when he first received it and in my opinion, he hasn't done a single thing any other POTUS has done in recent years to earn that distinction. Obama was awarded the NPP based upon his silver tongue. Not his perceived silver lining.

2). Drones Killing people throughout Pakistan and Yemen – Yep, increased activity
3). War in Iraq – yep still going
4). Guantanamo – yep, still miserable terrorists sitting on the coast of a harbor for terrorism.
So what has he (Obama) done?
    1) first African American President – yep
2). Nuclear arms treaty with Russia – BFD, there have been treaties with Russia / Soviet Union going back to the sixties.. heck, going back to WW II
So what has he accomplished? I believe the record speaks for itself. A continuation of the worst policies of Bush II, and very little else...oh yeah, and economy that can we can truly say is the worst since the Great Depression. Good Job President Obama! You rock.

President Obama lived up to his standards of Noble Price winner. He proved in killing OBL & his supporters what his predecessors could not do with same forces & facilities. He has proved marvelously successful in his words, vision & determination. He could not do better on Job Front for people of America as powers centers like cost centers are in Congress & Senate with political vengeance on him for 2012 although not acknowledged publicly but work openly underneath & in under current. On a number of occasions politicians could lose control on their tongs in public & uttered openly on public forum hitting hard public conviction & confidence. President Obama did well in Libya by seeking NATO contribution in preventing large scale murders of Libyans declared in warlike declaration by Gadhafi’s elder son on national TV. Despite all odds, graver situation & economic stress Obama could prove that he could & did better than most Presidents of USA who never faced similar challenges during their presidency. Still time is there up to 2012 to extend hand of cooperation & realistic support by GOP & Tea Party members & work with President for national good rather than political accomplishments to defeat President Obama who has established enough credentials to win in 2012 for second term. These are the hard facts of public opinion not political vendetta. It is simple mathematics learnt by people of America about political weight

I disagree that he 'lived up' to his Nobel Prize, he really didn't earn it like other winners. I just think there were so many more people that were far more deserving. But I agree that he will most likely win 2012, and that his approval rating doesn't necessary represent how good of a job he's done as President. Approval ratings really don't show much beyond how times are. If times are bad, Presidents get disapproval, it times are good, they'll get good approval ratings. Funny how that works, isn't it? When something goes wrong, blame the President. Even with his decreasing approval ratings, could you imagine a President Perry? My God, I think I might leave the country. As someone in the branch of science, I'd probably lose my job. Only Romney is the one who isn't frightening, and I don't even like him. But he won't get elected because Mormonism is associated with a lot of false rumors that people actually think are true.

Did anyone really think that President Obama should just come into office and pull all our troops out? I can't tell if all the "Obama really does not want Peace" comments are right wingers trying to prove a point or left wingers without a clear grasp on world politics. We blew the absolute he11 out of Iraq. We destroyed their infrastructure and the security forces that held the country together. At the point that Obama took office, what was the definition of peace? We were already in two wars – just pulling out of either one without completing at least the basic mission would be foolish and in Iraqs case, inhumane.

To think that any President won't have to deal with conflict is a fantasy. We can look at Libya as "his" conflict. but goodness me, he did not go forward without international approval and without a foreign leadership structure in place. Europe turned that into a fiasco in the beginning, not Obama.

Because even if Russia did/does reduce its nuclear stock, its not reducing its standing military but in fact increasing it!
Thats not to mention presiding over 3 wars, increased drone attacks, supplying mexican drug cartels with weapons, and now killing american citizens without trial. Yes aaron after 3 years, Obama could very well pull troops out. Obama is already on record that genocide in Iraq would not be a good enough reason to keep troops in Iraq. Hence humanitarian reasons would not be enough. He also EXPANDED Afghanistan operations.
Not to mention an illegal war in Libya as it violated the War Powers Act.
Also if after 3 years you're still blaming Bush, what you're really saying is Obama is totally incompetent to have made any changes by now.

All you nay sayers would have an orgasm or a climax if the medal had been given to Reagan, or either one of the Bushes. Look back at the ones that have recieved the medal and you can probably find something in their back groundthat you could use to say they did not deserve it. What a question. Well let's take it apart.
When Obama took office we were in two wars. Iraq and Afghan. Obama 3 years later is still in both. However, he widened the playing field. Yemen and Pakistan. More "PEACE" money to Egypt, Palestinians, Saudia Arabia.. Then he decided to go into Libya. Almost caused WWIII with his speech on Israeli borders. Which ended up having Peace Treaty between Palestinians and Israel thrown out. Then when he backtracked after Palestinians went to the UN that caused problems with the rest of the Arab Nations..Egypt, Saudia Arabia, Syria, Turkey...and of course Pakistan and Iran. Libya mess up with the Ground to Air Missiles disappearing and Obama's funding of Muzlim Brotherhood ticked Russia and China off who then refused to help with Syria. Peace PRIZE? NO is an understatement!

I voted for the president in 2008 and intend to do so in 2012. However, it is quite apparent that the main reason he was awarded the Peace Prize in 2009 was because he was not George Bush. The award of the prize was not, I believe, intended so much to honor President Obama as it was intended to shame President Bush. Assuming this is true enough, then I can't say President Obama earned the award, but that's not my call.

The fact of the matter is he had done nothing to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. What he has done since really has no bearing one way or another. To base this "prize" on the basis of one's potential or what one intends to do renders said prize completely meaningless. Roosevelt and Wilson had negotiated the end of wars before being awarded the prize. Mother Teresa had spent her life working to better the world. MLK Jr. had already been working for years towards racial equality when he received the award in 1964, a year after his "I have a dream" speech. Kissinger negotiated the end of a war, and opened up dialogue with a communist state before he received the award.

The list can go on and on about truly deserving winners. And lets not forget, many times throughout history they haven't awarded the Peace Prize to anyone as there were no deserving candidates that year.

The Peace Prize has no become more and more pointless through the last several years and by giving the award to Obama it rendered it completely meaningless. It doesn't matter what he has done since to deserve the award, what did he do to deserve it in the first place?

The Nobel committee fell into the same wizardry and amore that people felt when he visited my town. It was a farmer's market center and there were about 500 people present. He had just announced his candidacy and they were flocking around him. None of the media were allowed inside because it was an exclusive $1000 per plate fund raiser where people could talk openly. But the press got so much more coverage outside by talking to his supporters who just showed up to shake his hand but not attend the fund raiser. The news crew went up to a young Black woman in her 30's with a couple kids next to her. They asked her why she supported him and she replied, "He's so beautiful, I don't care what his policies are or his record I just care that he's such a good looking Black man who I would give all my soul and body to." So the reporter asked, "what do you like about his proposed budget plans." She replied, "Honey, that man's so cute and beautiful I really don't care about his this and that stuff."

Peace Prize – I suppose making the US a weaker more Islamic government peaceful for the rest of the world and subject to middle eastern rule. I suppose alienating the people who founded this nation under GOD is a peaceful attempt. I have never seen a president destroy a country and it's peoples heart in such a short period of time. Neither he nor his wife love this country. We have people who risked life and limb to be here many years ago. They would have done anything to be a part of this great country. Here's my take, and I honestly don't care if you disagree. I think Barack Obama surpassed the expectations of the Nobel Peace Prize commitee. Here is why I say this. I like that they mentioned the Russian arms deal, but that never even crossed my mind. More important and immediate to his job as President of the United States, he passed the Affordable Care Act. Sure, that doesn't have anything to do with the international scene unless you consider that taking care of our own may reduce the flow of Americans going oversease to receive better healthcare. He accomplished this agenda item in the face of fierce opposition, not only from the opposing party, but many from his own party.

Another thing he did right here for Americans was sign the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. Now, I know again that that has nothing to do with international peace, but think about this. He has elevated human rights to a new level in our country. That, alone, is worthy of the prize. Think of all the presidents who have come before him and failed to do that for one reason or another. The next president will have a very hard act to follow.

Then, there is the fact that Barack Obama supported the Arab Spring. Some view that as an act of aggression. I do not. I think he simply got behind the people who wanted freedom and gave them a literal fighting chance. It brought bloodshed and violence to be sure, but the end result has an even greater potential for freedom throughout the Middle East than ever.

Furthermore, Barack Obama's actions in support of the Arab Spring are not even remotely similar to President Bush's actions in Iraq. President Bush, if you recall, did not wait for an uprising of the people. He took preemptive, unilateral action based on a vendetta and political agenda that we still can't figure out to this day. What's more, we're still in Iraq. In the Arab Spring movements, we established no permanent basis and we did not occupy anything. NATO still supports the Libyan rebels, but that revolution is rapidly coming to an end.

Finally, the killing of Al Qaida terrorists doesn't bother me in the least. Barack Obama made it very clear in his acceptance speech that America must defend itself. He also said that he would, as our leader, carry that mission to its completion. He has covered every legal angle on the killing of these men, and I applaud his efforts. It's funny that some people want to deny he had anything at all to do with bringing these killers to their just end, but at the same time they want to turn around and prosecute him for war crimes. Get real!

Barack Obama has already more than earned his Nobel Peace Prize, but I have a feeling, he'll continue to earn it for the rest of his life. God bless the man.

By the way, I see that I left behind numerous typos. I apologize for that. I was typing fast and didn't take the time to proofread what I wrote. Yikes! "Commitee" should be "committee," "oversease" should be "overseas," and "basis" should be "bases." I also apologize for a lousy stream-of-consciousness essay and all the style errors I made. Still, I want to say that I stand by my major points, and I don't care if Barack Obama merely completed what George Bush started. The fact is, that he got it done. That's a feather in his cap, whether you like it or not.

This article is a LIE. There were no "new" arms negotiations with the Russians, Obama simply extended a pact that Bush had originally inked with them. That pretty much sums up Obama's career.

Obama is just like bush, an oil baron warlord. Borrowing $4 billion a week from China to blow up the middle east so that the republican oil barons and their executives can live it up on our squandered taxes. Obama is the biggest disappointment of the 21st century. All he can do is order more drone strikes and strut around.

Obama didn't ask for the prize. He was given the prize because of his ideas, to encourage them. He acknowledged in his acceptance that he had not earned it. Not sure how all this is grounds for an attack on Obama.

ROFL, like any true liberal would ever question the truest liberal hypocrite to ever screw americans over. I thought the prize was bad when it awarded al gore over a nun who actually saved lives instead of flying around the globe telling other people to stop burning fossil fuels. but handing Obama the prize forever ruined it.

Mr. Obama getting the prize when he did is and was a joke. Heck – he charged into Libya and put our citizens at risk without even getting congressional approval. Though the actions of Bush are called into question, he presented a case based on information he was given, to congress and a vote was taken to authorize actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unfortunately, Obama has brought shame to the Nobel Peace Prize and discounted what is the meaning and true value of that prize. As an advocate for humanity, I am saddened by the decline and loss of credibility Obama has brought to this traditionally merit award and the world in general. It was a mistake.

For much of the World, any policy that causes a decline in the power and prestige of the United States promotes peace and prosperity in the rest of the World. Were this really true, President Obama would be the greatest peacemaker in history.

They gave Obama the Nobel prize before he even had a chance to do ANYTHING. He certainly didn't deserve it then, and I'm not aware of anything he's done since then, that would make me think he deserved a Nobel prize. The fact is, when they gave the Nobel prize to a man who had done nothing beyond winning an election, they cheapened the entire meaning of the prize in my mind.
I grew up thinking the Nobel prize actually meant something. Now I see it's just another political reward, surviving off the reputation of those who created the idea before the idea was forgotten. What a joke.

I agree that Obama should not have been given the Peace Prize. I was astounded that he was awarded the prize with only months into his presidency. But does anyone really think that Obama can negotiate peaceful solutions with Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Palestinians and Israel ? Basically I think Obama is a good and decent man and personally, I think Obama went into office with naivety and perhaps delusions of grandeur. He has now realize how the politics of Washington works I have read somewhere that he has confided to his friends that he thinks that he will be a one term president and based on that personal assumption he took the prize's money and ran while he can.

The Nobel committee made absolute fools of themselves and a complete joke of the peace prize in giving the award to Obama FOR HAVING DONE NOTHING. They were simply dazzled by the "Audacity of Hype". Europeans were even more optimistic about Obama's prospects than Americans were. Now they are even more disappointed – as they should be. But did this reporter actually think the Nobel committee would admit what a ridiculous mistake it made?

This is the first Noble prize receipient who was expected to live up the Noble Prize. Every other receipient had already lived up in order to receive a prize like this. Its like awarding a doctorate degree from Harvard and then asking a person to live up to that award.

I ain't heard no body talk about Cain's skin color and he is blacker than the idiot now in the WH who is just l/2 black though he won't admit having white blood. So it must be the democrats and liberals or are spitting out this bias about blacks, his prejudice. It sure ain't the conservatives as they are supporting an all-black man. This one will make a much better leader than the so nothing Obama.

Hello Ole Granny, I am black man that works at a company that has 300 white people “most love me to death and others will kill me if they were smarter enough to get away with it” and they don’t even acknowledge that the President is ½ white. They call him every name under the sun except the Son of GOD! Last I check I thought I saw the President pay much respect to his mother that is White repeatedly. Not that she was white but the fact that she was and is his mother! You haven’t heard anyone talk about Cain because he is a joke! Making a statement to the fact that black people have no reason to claim racism and we bring it on ourselves. So racist have gotten smarter and being that! I go through it on a daily bases and have brought it to the companies attention and everyone says you are making too much of nothing! Or I have paid for college and have all the qualification for my job and many others but can’t get promotion or another position because; I am not in the Good ole Boy group! So you can support Cain if you want. You will be begging for this President after see what he will or won’t do! Read up on his 999 tax plan, them see how much you like that black man! Just that last statement you made about JAZZING it up so some of you could understand calls your judgment into question! Anytime you have to explain an action before someone ask you about it, means you let your true colors show!

As I read all the responses to the original question, most are so off base with their reply that it has become a bash the President session! The one thing I know or think I know to be true is this, most people that are replying don’t even have their own homes in order, their own bills paid on time or can’t keep the people close to them happy. So now we are looking to the 44th President to have every answer to every problem in the United States, YEAH RITE. For what this President has had to overcome with the fact of even getting elected was monumental, then having two wars that one had nothing to with the price of tea in China ‘Just a saying that means not justified”, just about everyone knew that OBL was in Pakistan but we went to Iraq and got Suddam Hussein for what? A GOP that works for Wall Street and will not tax them the same way I “a blue collar work” has been taxed for the 22 years of working. A TEA Party that has some of the believes that the KKK has WOW! No one wants the Government to have control of things until something affects them. We had a previous president that did what? We had a Vice President that was the CEO of a company called Halliburton that received hundreds of millions of dollars of no bid contracts to supply the military during the wars with faulty equipment that has killed our service man as well. Where is that Senate hearing at? The only thing GWB is good for is the acronym of WMD! That we still haven’t found 10 years later!

I find it absurd that when someone criticizes Obama, the immediate response is generally "but BUSH blah blah blah". LOL as if stating your opinion on an entirely different person wins the argument or is even at least acceptable.

BTW, I have never heard in my life someone responding to criticism of Bush with "but CLINTON blah blah blah". If you can't answer the debate with valid points, either:

    1. Don't Debate
    2. Change your Opinion
