By Fareed Zakaria, CNN
Regular GPS watchers and readers will know that I was in Tehran last week to interview President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. You can watch excerpts of the interview here. But being in Iran made me think about our policy towards that country, which strikes me as stuck in a time warp.
You will remember that early in the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama signaled that he was going to have a different foreign policy than George Bush - and he chose as his example, Iran. He argued that simply pressuring the country was not a policy and Obama offered to talk to Iran's leaders. Well, two years into his presidency, Obama's Iran policy looks a lot like George W. Bush's - pressure and more pressure.
The punitive tactics have paid off in some measure. Iran faces economic problems. But they are also having a perverse impact on the country, as I witnessed last week. The sanctions are stifling growth, though not as much as one might imagine. So the basic effect has been to weaken civil society and strengthen the state - the opposite of what we should be trying to do in that country. By some estimates, Iran's Revolutionary Guard - the hard-line element of the armed forces, supported by the supreme leader – now controls 40% of the economy.
Is that the goal of our policy?
In fact, what is our goal? Is it to overthrow the Iranian regime? Is it to make it bleed until it gives up its nuclear program? A wholesale revolution continues to strike me as a distant prospect. The regime still has some domestic support, and it uses a mix of religious authority, patronage and force quite effectively.
And we keep forgetting the inconvenient fact that, even if the regime changed, the nuclear energy program - which is popular as an expression of Iranian nationalism and power - will continue. Even the leaders of the Green movement strongly support that program.
Obama should return to his original approach and test the Iranians to see if there is any room for dialogue and agreement. Engaging with Iran, putting its nuclear program under some kind of supervision and finding areas of common interest (such as Afghanistan) would all be important goals.
It might not work - the Iranian regime is divided and often paralyzed itself - but it's worth trying. Strategic engagement with an adversary can go hand in hand with a policy that encourages change in that country. That's how Washington dealt with the Soviet Union and China in the 1970s and 80s.
Iran is a country of 80 million people, educated and dynamic. It sits astride a crucial part of the world. It cannot be sanctioned and pressed down forever. It is the last great civilization to sit outside the global order. We need a strategy that combines pressure with a path to bring Iran in from the cold.

beautiful article
Yes, yes, yes. The U.S. and Iran need to make friends. We need a solid ally in the Middle East and Iran makes good strategic sense. I hope the Arab Spring spreads to Iran, brings forth a more open government and opens the possibility of better relations. Barring that, the U.S. should make the first move.
Are you serious? Yours is such an ignorant comment that for your sake I have assume you are joking, Our ally? Iran is funding and supporting terrorist groups in Iraq; they are funding and strategically supporting (and probably supplying soldiers) to Hamas and Hezbollah – both of which seek the destruction of Israel and the erection of fundamentalist Islamic regimes; they brutalize and murder their own citizens to deny them the basic freedoms; they are building a nuclear program who most now agree is intended to create a nuclear weapon that its president would use to fulfill his dream of wiping Israel and its people off the map; they suppress to the point of murder (see "trials" for Christians and Zorastrians and Bahai's) religions other then Islam. Where do you see the room for "allying" ourselves with them? It you'd been around 60 years ago you'd be advocating becoming allies with Nazi Germany.
I agree with you, Jen. Don't even bother with this scared and short-sighted "Fariba" cartoon.
The United States and Iran must become allies. Iran has much more to offer us than Israel. Their citizens are educated and want a good relationship with Iran. Their government seeks only to challenge common conceptions of things, which is actually a scientific approach to understanding the world around us.
People should research the history of Iran and realize how important this country is. And anyone that thinks that Iran is antisemitic simply doesn't know their history and is listening to the media demonizing Iran instead of doing their own research.
Mr Zakaraia:
Why CNN is suddenly has changed its position?. An interview has changed your opinion 180 degrees? Such a good journalist!!!!!
Have you forgot the events in 2009?. Please be honest and put your profession first.
You gotta love it when Lavey and his ilk refer to scanning the internet for supporting opinions as "research".
Nice Fariba, you just showed what a well educated person you are by insulting Jim in your first sentence. Brilliant. All that why? Because he disagrees with you.
I think that ship has sailed. I believe there was a time when this was possible, but China seems to have taken them in as a pawn in their axis of evil. So now they don't have much of a reason to barter with us. They repeat Chinese propaganda at the UN (the US has no rights, blah blah blah), when really that's quite true of China and Iran. They seem to be doing irrational things already, which is a key sign that they are under duress from China.
This is similar to how North Korea and Pakistan act up out of the blue. It doesn't make sense, but I believe to China it does. It's an attempt to prevent the world from getting along, as this would be harmful to China's national security. Since they are quite big on proxy puppets fighting their battles for them.
Turning Iran into our ally is not impossible and really not a bad idea. Keep your enemies close, as the saying goes. Are you people who oppose this idea just simply afraid of Iran? Their military is relatively harmless, and the country's leader is not too bright. The people of Iran could be more easily swayed than you think, in my opinion. With the Iranian citizens help it would be possible. I think we are headed in that direction already.
Jenn you are just plain dumb
I think Fariba is a comedian. One just has to laugh at his exaggerations, ad libbing, outright lies and his general frenzied theater of the absurd.
I think "ally" is the wrong word in this situation. I think it is important to engage in dialogue with Iran and build some sort of relationship with them. As Fareed pointed out, a lot of our policies actually end up hurting the Iranian people more than the Iranian regime itself, and you can guarantee that the Iranian regime is putting the blame on us for their economic troubles along with much more. I think dialogue could in the long run at least improve relations. At best, maybe we could actually get some people in the country to oversee their nuclear program and keep an eye on it instead of relying on computer hackers to slow the program down. Right now that program is one of the biggest threats not only to Israel, but to the world. If I ran does develop a nuclear weapon, everything will change. If dialogue could open up doors that would allow us to better understand that program, I believe that in itself is worth sitting down and and at least attempting to talki with them.
Jen -
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly murdered his own people, been a hugely distabilizing force in the Middle East, and
has time and time again vowed the "extermination" of Israeli and its people.
To call for the U.S. to seek "a friend" with Iran gives naievte a very bad name. They are a dangerous rogue state that oppresses its own people – now a nation with its finger on the nuclear trigger - ready, willing and even eager to sell weapons to the Islamists who come to America to kill us.
Hence, your comments cross the line from foolish into dangerous territory.
what a stupid comment
The Arab spring already happened in Iran, when the people took the streets in protest over the 2009 Iranian elections. The regime suppressed the protesters by all means necessary, including using deadly force. Doesn't anyone remember that?
What's funny, Jen, is that most people who will scoff at your remarks don't know that Iran, Israel, and the United States used to be natural allies. There were military R&D projects between the 3. And often times, new American technology would make it's way to Iran before being deployed by the united states itself.
Prior to today's concerns, Iran used to be the regional stabilizing force. It was intended to hold back and control the entire region as Persians and Arabs, other than out of necessity, have never been too fond of each other. it's not a natural alliance and can break at any moment (I'm not saying it's imminent. I'm just saying there's nothing truly deep-rooted in the relations, other than the past 30 years).
But in order for the united states and Iran to become friendly towards each other again, the united states does have a lot of apologizing to do. Iranians haven't forgotten the million lives they lost in the Iraq war, with America supporting saddam and providing him with chemical and biological weapons that he unleashed on civilian populations. And then there are all the sanctions. And all the demonizing that's gone on both ways.
We may think Iran is a crazy regime but we've given them every possible reason to be paranoid about what we're going to do next. They actually have the most logical and calculated responses to all situations.
And there will be no "Arab spring" in Iran. The regime has too many supporters, and there is a much greater chance of reforms over time, rather than through another revolution. And as we all saw...they killed off the revolutionary movement, which was the largest in the entire region by far, with by far the fewest casualties.
Iran is certainly a lot to work through. But I can see us re-engaging with them at some point. But not if we keep treating them like a third tier country. And if we keep ignoring them, they'll soon another Russia and China. Who, coincidentally, happen to be keeping Iran in their sphere of influence because they realize the potential behind the country, and don't want America to "get Iran back," in a sense.
Cheers.
Comments from some of the responders here are just continued evidence of the small-minded, flavor-of-the-moment, short-memoried, stupid society that we've become in America.
-"Iran is funding terrorist groups": dumb comment made by someone who forgot or never payed attention to world for the last 40 years. I seem to remember a time when China, USSR, Czechosovakia, East Germany, Romania, and a few other "axis of evil" nations were also supporting and funding terrorism against the western world. I'm not suggesting that the U.S. is bosom-buddies with these nations now, but you cannot argue that our diplomacy with them during the worst of times didn't produce the results we see today. In other words, "rival nation" is not the same as "rogue state", which is what we label Iran now.
-"A bunch of religious throwbacks": Let's see now.....we don't have that in the United States! We're all about religious and personal freedom for crying out loud, right? Which entirely explains our relationships with Saudi Arabia (96% islamic), India (a throughly Hindu dominated state), Pakistan (probably more of a religious state than Iran), China (no religious freedom whatsoever), France (one of the most bigoted states in western Europe...go there and you'll see), the list goes on and on. Give me a break, please. Does the Iranian regime and people suppress religious freedoms? Of course! But I think we need to look in the mirror before declaring that we're meeting our own stated principles. Oh yeah: don't even get me started on Isreal.
-"They are a dangerous rogue state that oppresses its own people – now a nation with its finger on the nuclear trigger – ready, willing and even eager to sell weapons to the Islamists who come to America to kill us.": So, I guess this statement ONLY applys to Iran, but not China, Russia, Pakistan, France, South Africa....all nuclear states, all proven of supplying weopons to Islamists.
-Finally, "Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly murdered his own people, been a hugely distabilizing force in the Middle East". I guess no one here remembers the "good old days" when Iran was ruled by Shah Reza Palahvi? Absolutely one of the closest friends the U.S. ever had in the region? I thought so.
You mean we should attend the "death to America" rallies?
To Josh Barnett: Yeah, China wants that huge pocket of natural gas sitting under Iran too. Everybody does.
A voice of reason, compromise, compromise !!!!
Let do a social experiment. Jen, Why don't you move to Iran for one year? When you return, you can write articles and do interviews on your experience in Iran. Here is an easy way to get in, Just go hiking on the border of Iraq and Iran and you will be walked in with pleasure. I figure you are female. Better wear you hear-wear. Looking forward to the results.
Naive Jen....tsk, tsk. You have a lot to learn honey. You're the silly, useful idiot that Hitler looked for in Nazi Germany.
Here's a free history lesson for you. Iran is a stubborn bully whose only means of "working things out" with their global neighbors is to bully them. Well, turns out the US doesn't get bullied. In fact, we like to bully the bullies....it's pretty cool. Be bust their nutz and clean their clock (see Saddam Hussein Obama). The US doesn't back down from international bullies....that is, unless Obama Hussein is in the White House learning on the job. Then, you'll live in a world where America leads from behind (you know we're puzzies when France steps up BEFORE us! LOL!). You'll live in a world where our President travels the globe apologizing the America...telling the world how BAD America is.....and kissing the rings (and bowing down to) of Saudi princes! Just too funny. That's so weird seeing the POTS actually bowing to another head of state - hilarious! No wonder no one respects America.
Jen,
Your comments are no where near as ignorant as the reactionaries that have lambasted you by trumpeting Iran's poor human rights record and "danger" they pose to the U.S. As if the U.S. has never supported the ovethrow of democratically elected governments in favor of authoritarian regimes which better served American interests while at the same time murdering their own people. See Mobutu in Congo 1960, Pinochet in Chile 1973,1976 Argentine coup, American support of Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War, etc. As far as Iran being a "dangerous rogue nation", try taking a look at the cultivation of anti-american terrorism in so-called allied nations like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
The mentality of your attackers, which ignores history and nuance in favor of knee-jerk militarism, has unfortunately been guiding our disastrous foreign policy for too long.
If the US could ally with Pakistan, i guess it could with any other country. I am in agreement with fareed to this extent only. However I doubt the capabilities of the US, who despite having allies in Pakistan have only been used by Pakistan for money/gains without any major achievements. On a serious note the US need to pull up their socks andcwork hard on their foreign policy, give a few decades to Asia, the US will be found struggling as the asian economies then would be robust and cash rich, unfortunately the US then would be not in such a powerful situation. Act now USA!!!
Iran is Persian not arab, they tried their uprising during the last election and got batons smashed upon their heads.
To Lavey: Fariba is neither scared nor a cartoon. Rather, Jen is being unrealistic.
hat arab spring seems to be producing radical theocracies that loathe any religion other than islam. One doubts we could make much headway when we are accusing them of hiring an immigrant retard to kill a saudi emissary. Eric Holder will do anything to divert attention from his gun walking debacle.
It is amazing how so many ignorant people like to see their words in print. First of all, the article was based on nothing. Obama has tried to engage with Iran and has gotten nowhere. The reason is that some people can't be reasoned with and can't be engaged. This is true of Iran as long as Iran is controlled by religious fanatics and leaders who openly state their intention to commit a second holocaust.. Obviously, these people who want us to talk to Iran and either support or don't care about Iran's threats to destroy Israel are the descendents of those evil people who either openly or secretly supported the nazi persecution of the Jews. Just like those state dept officials who denied available visas to European Jews, they have no sense of decency and are ruled by their hatred.
Of course, some of the supporters of engagement with Iran are just wishful thinkers-sort of like Neville Chamberlain and his allies. Some of them were well-meaning stooges who openly attacked Winston Churchill for telling the truth-that Hitler was an evil man and had to be stopped. Unfortunately, these wishful thinkers were amoral appeasers who helped Hitler conquer Czechoslovakia and did nothing to condemn Hitler for his murderous racism.
The only hope for engagement with Iran is if the Ayatollahs Achminanutjob are overthrown and a decent and pragmatic government gets in power.
agreed Paulio. These forums just show the incredibly stupidity that has now become America. I am sure many on here would just like us to "blow them all up" or start another war. Yes let's not engage Iran, let's start another war, because that's all america exports now
Jen , I agree with you.
be careful what you wish for, you just may get it
I hope we re-engage Iran, with drone or F35. The fight is coming, previews in the upcoming weeks. Iran is helping to kill Americans and others; we don't need them as allied.
I'm with fariba in the short run (50 years). In the loooong run, I'm with Jen.
So, let me get this right....Obama is going to play nice-nice with Iran, meanwhile they continue to ANYTHING THEY WANT. They view Obama as THE weakest President in American history and treat him as such. Pretty interesting how a Nobel Peace Prize winner beleives it's OK to execute an American citizen living in Yemen. What happened to due justice?? He puts those in Gitmo on Trial in the US, but executes American citizens WITHOUT a trial. Wonder how people would react if Bush did these things???? (Crickets chirping)
If you think what you are saying is smart, think again. Where do you pull out your facts from anyway? Actually people in Iran love President Obama while they hated Bush. Moreover, that American citizen that you are so adamant about portraying him as an innocent bystander just living his life in Yemen was actually a terrorist who incited people to kill American citizen. What Obama did was the right thing, whereas, what Bush did was absolutely senseless. How many lives Bush wasted to capture (NOT) the 911 culpable? The answer is in the hundreds of thousands. And how many lives Obama wasted to destroy both of these maggots, ZERO. Now you tell me who’s the man? So just go educate yourself you nasty lying right wingers.
Shut up, that guy deserved to get killed. No one cares if he "was" an American. Once you betray your country and start being an advocate for killing Americans, your citizen ship will no longer be recognized. Wow, your a great example on how stupid Americans can be. "Oh, don't kill him he's an American!" Meanwhile he's plotting to kill Americans and other allies, forming terrorist organizations through out the world. If you don't respect your citizenship you don't deserve it.
Well, maybe we should let you get it right some more, because you don't have it right. Fareed is suggesting that President Obama engage with Iran, and criticizing him for not doing so. So, you're complaining about something the president has not done, which is typical of the low reading comprehension skills of people like you in American society. Furthermore, you criticize the president for being weak on foreign policy and for killing a terrorist in the same breath. You don't even know what you're mad about. He's either weak, or he's a war-monger, you can't have it both ways.
"Let me get this right," indeed. Take all the time you want. Sound out the big words.
And to add to this discussion: The American citizen living in Yemen (the terrorist) denounced his citizenship; he was nothing more than an English speaking terrorist. Back to the subject, IRAN's leadership hates us, and IRAN's people (in general) love us. Get your facts straight – TEA-BAGGER...
Whenever someone says "they view Obama as the weakest president in American history", you know they're full of it. When someone purports to speak on behalf of another country's views and isn't even part of that country's populace (far less part of its regime) know they're full of it. Basically they have an agenda and think hurling invective and inane rhetoric will accomplish such. I can't say how Iran views Obama or Bush or any other American president, neither can the main posts author. I can assume they view US policy towards them as unfair and arrogant, meaning the US purports to get to decide which of the worlds countries can have nuclear program or not.
Obama has presided over one of the most successful foreign policy administrations in history. He has certainly put Bush to shame, to say the least. I think he is more than capable of handling Iran. We shouldn't fear any nation.
First Syria, and then Iran. Let their own people do their work / wage the revolutions that they need. These people let their governments go this way, let them dig their way out of their mess. Only then will they know the value of freedom / liberty / democracy and the price to pay to keep it. If we keep fighting their wars for them, they will never see the value of it. Iran needs to overthrow like they did before, just maybe they will get it right this 2nd time. Doubtful, but I sure as hell dont want to pay for it.
You made my point...the guy in Yemen was a terrorist....turns out the guys in Gitmo might also be terrorists (you think!?) So, we'll give the dudes in Gitmo a "fair trial" through our US judicial system....meanwhile, we'll execute an American in Yemen (turns out he's also a terrorist). Trying to reconcile that logic. How dare Nobel Peace Prize winner order the execution of an American! First time in history, a Nobel Peace Prize winner has done so! LOL!!!
"Obama has presided over one of the most successful foreign policy administrations in history"
NOW THAT is the funniest line I've seen in a long time. Barack Hussein Obama leads from behind (ex: Libya), is indecisive (see Syria), throws allies under the bus (to wit Israel)....should I go on?? It's so weird that his HHS old lady is giving passes left and right to big corporations to exempt them from compliance with portions of OBamacare – even though it was rammed down everyone's throat....whilst they boast of its grand benefits for all mankind. Just too funny. If it's so great, why did they cancel the Class Act (yet another Liberal giveaway)? And why do they exempt certain corporations (see McDonalds - you know, that teenie-weenie small business) from certain aspects of Obamacare? You Libs just don't get it. I suppose what we need to do is spend more money, right? There was a Democratic strangleholdon ALL THREE brnaches of government for 2+ years (THAT'S TWO YEARS KIDS!)...and how many jobs did they create during that time....? (Crickets chirping)
Just to add- All of you who are advocating for the killing of the american in yemen could be next on the list. Because all he did was advocate for the killing of americans. Isn't that why all of you guys (and the gov't) called him a terrorist? He should have been CAPTURED and brought to TRIAL. Isnt that how WE do things?
@To All the Liberal Trolls on this Board
your arguments run on the side of fabrication. But first, regarding your comment about 'leading from behind' (w/e that means) suggesting that it's a bad thing..
Bush's Iraq War cost over a trillion dollars and thousands of US lives. Libya's liberation cost the US 1 billion and no US deaths. Libya has even promised to pay back the billion we spent. How can you even suggest that the Libya situation be conducted in another matter when it has worked out so well for the US? Out of touch.
Then you switch to domestic policy, talking about the healthcare reform, which has kept kids on their parents' healthcare until the age of 26. Millions of kids would be without right now if not for "obamacare." But oh that's right, you've been sheeped into thinking that obamacare is killing job creation or something.
Well just to inform, businesses haven't been affected. They haven't because the damn reform won't even be implemented for another year yet. Seriously all this hate on healthcare reform is libel.. Try actually reading the bill first.
Oh, you mean the bill that Obama said would be posted for 5 days on the Interweb Tubes so that everyone had a chance to read it before it was passed? Or do you mean the bill that Nancy Pelosi said we had to first pass BEFORE we oculd read what was in it? Which bill are you referring to? LOL!
"Well just to inform, businesses haven't been affected."
HA!! What a troll you are! If you had half of a clue, you'd see that all the revenue from that monstrasety called "Obamacare" is front-ended. I'm just happy we could train the Community Organizer in Chief on the job instead of electing someone who had prior executive experience (and, no Libtard, I'm not talking about the inept McCain or Palin.) Turns out that I am intellectually honest about who I vote for. Herman Cain has ZERO foreign policy experience, so he wil lnot get my vote (nor will the d-bag Obama, who has ruined our nation financially). See I don't just pull the "R" or "D" levers when I vote. I actually THINK about who the best candidate might be. At this point, our best hope is Gingrich, Romney or....my OVERALL BEST SELECTION would be John Bolton. He'd crack a few heads and straighten things about REAL FAST. Too bad he's not running. He would shred Obama in a debate.
Someone explain this to me if you can. Remember when Republicans based Obama when he was running for President? You know, why he's hanging out with a racist pastor, or dude who bombed gov't property (aka Bill Ayres)....and some of those other questions that Republicans dared to ask. And what did the Dems say about that criticism? "Republicans are racists for asking these questions!!!!!" "How dare they question his background!!!!"
And now, when the left wing media criticizes Herman Cain...NOT ONE Republican says that the media is being racist. That's so weird that Republicans don't play the race card....that's so strange.Just the Dems...perpetuating the race progam. Shameful Democrats.
Your post just shows how stupid and shallow american reasoning is.
LOL: (..they continue to ANYTHING THEY WANT), does not the US continue to do anything they want? Iran's leaders are not the puppets of the US like the former dictator The Shah was. The US- Iran friendship will save the US taxpayers at least 3-4 billion dollars a year by rendering the brutal zionist regime of Israel irrevelant. 90 million american loving people with love for american products imagin that. The US does not need to start another war to help her economy, make another friend and you will see the immediate economic impact among other things. The truth is, the zionist influence in America will prevent this from happening. The whole world realizes this fact except the American people. Only some intellectual sunderstand why the US government behaves so aggressively towards Iran. Isreal is the problem not Iran.
It is time we start worrying about ourselves, and our own citizens first, before everyone else's problems in the world. I'm sorry, but we are flat broke. Go ask the EU for help. They are closer to you anyways.
Look American, if you're going to continue to push common sense with regard to US foreign policy then I'm afraid you'll be locked from further posting.
Next you'll probably tell us the Iran has signed the NNPT, regularly allows inspectors in the facilities and that our own intelligence services have found absolutely zero evidence that demonstrates the Iran has a nuclear weapons program.
Furthermore American, you'll probably have us believe that the alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington was actually initiated by the FBI as a sting operation to implicate the Iranians.
What, you think we're stupid?
Amen! well said I wish this morons think the same way you and I think !they talk and talk and they do'nt do nothing !and people still believieng on them!
American,
I agree with you to some extent – worry about our own first! But the opinion piece is not suggesting we go and bail out the people of Iran, rather engage their government in above board discussions and truly offer them a way back to the civilized world. Many forget that at one point, in not too distant a history, Iran was one of the closest US allies in the Middle East. Iranian people want more freedom, liberty and opportunities; no less than any of us in the US. Sanctions have done nothing but to hurt the common man in that country. Their government continues to use the West as the boogeyman to hold on to power and we have done our best to enable them. The best thing we could do is to open the doors and dialogue and allow the young Iranians see what free societies can offer people and time will eventually take its course in our (and their) favor. The more we isolate the country, the longer these fascists will go unchallenged and hold on to the country they hijacked over 30 years ago.
easyrhino,
Do your homework before posting your nonsense. Iran IS a signatory to the NNTP and has ratified it. Furthermore, it has no choice but to let IAEA inspectors in (maybe not to our liking) but they do inspect the plants and related factories, nevertheless. So, stop making up your own facts and educated yourself.
Peace!
Wrong Fareed, as always you get in wrong. You recently went to Russia and made similar shallow comments about the population not being educated. Here you got it wrong again...The Iranian population is not educated nor is the regime looking for cherries to pick with other countries like the US. The people of Iran are great but the fanatics and regime are the ugliest and no treaties should be made with regimes in power – government to government. Your article insinuates to try to have a relationship with Iran – NO NO NO. Not in the way they behave. US needs to bomb the clerics and regime and let a new government grow from hence. That is what happened to Gadhafi and other similar idiots.
Bombing Iran would be a heinous and tragic mistake. Iran is not Libya, Iraq, or Afghanistan. Bombing Iran could incite war with Russia, China, and many others who have partnered with Iran for energy. Unless you want another incredibly costly war, but this time again a modern military with ties to governments with nuclear weapons, then we should stop the beating of these war drums again Iran and instead seek to find ways to work with them.
Saying we should bomb their clerics would be like the saying that they should bomb our priests and churches. It's a message of hate.
That's the good ole' boy Republican/Conservative answer to any situation abroad they can't figure out how to deal with- just start dropping bombs. Just like the total over-reaction and over-kill Bush tried with the war on terror. Totally unnecessary. Obama has our country on the right side of history for a change, with Libya being a great example of how things can be handled more wisely. Iran can be dealt with, but not by dropping bombs or putting troops on the ground. We should never fear any nation. Obama 4 more years!
Let them shed their blood for their own revolution, I dont want to pay for any of it. Its like giving hand outs to a bunch of idiotic spoiled children that will blame you later for their ills.
by the way, for the record Im a conservative republican.
Trouble making bums all of them. Send them back to 100 years to the 3rd century.
Compared to toothless rednecks like you, Iranians are far more educated than Americans.
Supernova : Counter to what you want to believe, iranians are highly educated. Otherwise they wouldn't have accomplished what they have at the moment.
Counter to what anyone things. iran unlike USA puts emphasis on Educattion and They have continuously encouraged innovation and thats why they are able to live with sanctions
Iran is purely caught in between a large battle brewing between USA ( Russia + China)
USA is aggressively trying to control all shipping lanes either willingly or by force. and do you think Russia + China are sleeping?
Forget the fairy tale you hear about Saudi Ambassador assassination plot. Even a 10 year old can make up a better story.
Bombing yet another country? I ,for one American, am war weary and refuse to believe that another expensive life costing money pit of a war is necessary or conducive to American safety. If there is a way to engage the Iranian government to lessen the volatility of the middle east, I am for it. Even if they hate America and what we stand for in Iran and want to destroy Israel. Thinking or wishing doesn't make it so. A lot of rhetoric is political in the middle east and hate talk against America and Israel is required to be accepted as authentic. Behind the scenes they may be a little wary but hopeful as America did support and inspire the "Arab Spring" and at least the Libyans don't consider Americans their enemy. We may now have some political clout and should probably explore it on the qt and may even be doing so. I hope we can find a way to help calm the region.
1. Iranians are NOT Arab - how ignorant can you people be...
2. Since the Sanctions are not working maybe we should explore other options like dialogue.
Supernova: are you afraid that once there is friendship between US and Iran, Isreal will become irrelevant and Big Uncle will stop handing out billions to them? It seems to me that the only people who suggest war with Iran are either from Mossad or AIPAC or the zionist regim's sympathizers.
Fareed
You have always been criticizing the president. If you dont like it here,go back to Pakistan or wherever you came from and offer your solutions to their problems. At one point in time, you even suggested that the USA have a prime minister.
I am getting sick and tired of your infantile commentaries
Racist on a high horse.
American redneck, I'm sick of your uninformed, uneducated comments. Get lost. Aren't you supposed to be in church today?
America needs to rethink its foreign policy, especially when the defense budget is going to be under constant scrutiny. Weaponry wouldn't buy sympathy and friendship.
Lets see 9/11, terror sttacks, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. All these conflicts are the indirect result of our last attempt to engage Iran under the Carter admin. Carter freed islamic fundamentalists and they took over Iran. We had nothing but trouble from them ever since.
You must be George W. Bush's long lost illegitimate son. Either that or his hired male pr0st!tute, because it sounds like you have his d!ck in your mouth as you talk.
What does attempts to engage Iran have to do with 9/11, Libya, Iraq, or Afghanistan??? I agree with timetraveler.
Iran is directly responsible for arming and training huge portions of the militants in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you don't know what an explosively formed penetrator is please google it. But briefly, they are weapons that Iran continues to supply to American's enemies, which are responsible for tearing through many inches of armor plating and ripping apart the bodies of hundreds, perhaps, thousands of troops. Time to engage with Iran? Negative. It is time to stop this nation building B.S., destroy Iran's air defensive systems, cripple their infrastructure (airports, dams, power plants), then let take away the Persian's air force. Iran will not be our friend. Fareed you are naive
You have evidence of this? Can you say WMDs in Iraq?
You will get your wish, Stall#1, in a matter of weeks. Israel will be attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, and WW3 will be launched. May God help us all.
Stall#1: The US supported Saddam in his war with Iran, 1000 000 people died. The US remained silent when Saddam chemical bombed Iran. The US-Patistan created the Taliban. The Taliban murdered the entire Iranian diplomatic personnel in Kabol. These are facts. What you claim is fiction unless you show proof.
Would anyone be interested to know that Iran is building medium range ballistic missiles in Venezuela? Well they are and will be able to hit most of the South. Dallas texas, in two years you will have an Iranian missile point at you. Should we still engage? Yes. But we should engage with GBUs. I think most American's live in something like the "Matrix."
Good Lord, it's so discouraging to read so many comments from so many stupid Americans. No wonder no one around the globe respects the American public.
Rapprochement with Iran is in our interest, & a dialogue without looking down on this nation is a good start.
We can't approach any country in negotiation from the position of ("I'm American, just give me what I want").
It doesn't work. We must respect their integrity & show understanding for their security concerns (they're surrounded by nuclear powers (Pakistan, India, China, Russia, Israel). If we take the REDNECK approach of the idiot Republican conservatives, we simply encourage them to build the BOMB. We may still not be able to persuade them not to, but we'll be better off to be in the position of influencing their behavior. So far, Sanctions & military threats have not at all influenced their behavior; quite the opposite our approach has made them a more dangerous adversary!
How many military bases does the US have around the world? How many around Iran?
'Obama should return to his original approach and test the Iranians to see if there is any room for dialogue and agreement. Engaging with Iran, putting its nuclear program under some kind of supervision and finding areas of common interest (such as Afghanistan) would all be important goals.' - Doesn't decades of threatening and actual violence against US personnel prove anything to you?
Don't spread islam lies and don't poison freedom loving people with islam lies.
If iran is such a peace loving country, why don't they initiate the talk and show it's sincerity?
It is not 'may not working', it is 'will never work' under islam world domination ideology. I bet Fareed is a true muslin.
Fareed,
Hasn't Pres. Obama already tried to reach out to Iran for dialogue? Especially in the earlier part of his presidency? Are you simply recommending that he do that again? From what I can remember Iran was not interested (at least at the time) in dialogue.
Thanks,
Glenn
Didn't Iran just get implicated in a terrorist plot on US soil. I thought the US didn't negotiate with terrorists?
Iran didn't do any such thing, it's Israel's work in order to TRY to implicate Iran. Don't be a fool.
where is the proof to these lies .. But on the other hand didn't Israel attack the U.S.S. LIBERTY .. But our bond allegiance with Israel is unbrakeable ??? I am ashamed to be an american when I hear stupid people's comment like your self !!!!
Bunch of BS! I see the warmongers in Washington are at it again. Just what Obama needs to aviod the problems at home – once again! Bunch of twisted, sickos!
Due to the hardline ideology of the Islamic regime, there is absolutely no way the US could ever have a productive relationship with this regime. Khomeini built his regime on undying hatred for the US and Israel and there is no changing this belief. Every chance the Islamic regime gets, they act on this belief and have shown almost no change in it. The one breif exception was when Khatami was president and signalled a more ratioal approach. Khatami's views were met with hostility by Khamenei and Khatami was unable to exercise any power. The best strategy for the US is to exploit every weakness of the Islamic regime and take advantage of every opportunity to see this regime weakened with the ultimate goal of seeing its demise.
The US (France and Britain) can not be trusted ... as usual.
The issue is not whether Iran represents a classic terrorist threat. Iran launched it oil bourse in 2008 with a long term roadmap of being an alternative to NYMEX in New York and ICE Futures in London. They are planning to trade oil in non dollar currencies, which represents a huge threat to the U.S. Dollar. So what the government does is manufacture a threat that gives them an excuse to go in and stop it.
Who else has tried this?
Well, Saddam Hussein tried to sell oil in euros.
Gaddafi tried to get Africa on a gold backed currency and sell oil in dinars.
Hugo Chavez has discussed non dollar oil trades.
Anyone notice a pattern?
If they succeed, it would represent a major U.S. economic disaster.
We need to bomb Iran. That would be a good sign of 'friendship.' The only sign they'll understand.
Fareed is a globalist stooge. Everytime I read one of his articles I throw up a little bit in my mouth.
Did anyone read about a recent interview where Secy. Clinton said that initially Obama attempted to engage Iran and had zero success? I guess Fareed forgot to do his homework.
I remember that in the pre-war years, CNN's Iraq bureau only broadcast news that was preapproved and Iraq friendly. They justified this ethical breach by claimingit was the only way the bureau would retain access. Is CNN repeating itself in Iran? Sure feels like it.
I'm born and raised American and yes, I am the 99% who says leave Iran alone, quit butting into their business, we as a country need to stop meedling and occupying countries to take their natural resources like oil and lithium by force. Our country is a total mess and we should focus ONLY on the U.S. This President and Cabinet must be nuts to even consider attacking or support other coutries again Iran. The U.S. has become the world bully. No wonder we're getting bombed in retaliation. Duh.
It is a great article, if you believe the US should seriously engage a despotic and oppressive government of religious zealots with the emotional maturity of a five year old, and that has called for the destruction of both Israel and the US. Sure, we'll have a series of rational discussions leading to a stable long-term relationship with Iran as a pivotal leader in the regions. Right. Good luck with that. I have no idea what the long-term answer for Iran is, but legitimizing the government and giving it a voice on the world stage is not it.
Fareed – ,as usual, your comments are VERY insightful and productive.
A government foreign policy of Aimless pressure for the sake of pressure can ONLY be DIVISIVE – it buttresses Iran military/radical arguments of US hegemony / rule by 'divine right' and so works against our actual long term objectives of peace in the ME. Essentially sticks (pressure) without carrots (encouragement for dialog) can only lead to direct conflict – which, through proper diplomatic overtures, I feel is completely avoidable in this case.
We are well past the concern of being viewed as a paper tiger without teeth, if there was any doubt our military is superior before these recent wars there is none now. So it is definitely time to beat swords into plowshares, and consider offering the Iranian leadership ways to do the same.
Above being said, in due time AFTER sincere dialog and mutual trust is established – it will be crucial to have a verifiable inspection of the Iranian nuclear program by MUTUALLY trusted international inspectors – any other arrangement would be extremely dangerous nieve folly.
I agree! always to the point and reasonable.
I see this moron Zakaria so likes the taste of money! And dont trust the comments from Iranian regime lobby, the people in Iran will take a sh!t for these moron barraters beside you Zakaria and the rest
Fareed, I am glad to see your impartial article/opinion on Iran, On Iran, Obama proved to be the same as Bush maybe because of the very strong Israeli lobby inside US government. I am sure Israel, as always, will continue to work restlessly to deny justice & equality in any Islamic country.
I completely agree.
I normally hold Mr. Zakaria's views in high regard, but here I think he overlooks an important fact. He rightly points out that the civil and the clerical sides of the Iranian government are at odds with each other. With whom do we dialogue? If we choose the wrong one, we could make the situation worse. The clerics seem to have the upper hand, and the clerics seem to be the ones yelling, "Great Satan," loudest. If we aren't talking with them, then what's the point? And is there any point in trying to open a dialogue before the clerics tone down their rhetoric?
I don't know if anyone has been reading the news over the past few days but the civilian leader of Iran, Ahmenejhad, the public face for those clerics, is in a great deal of trouble right now over the accusations of fraud, waste and general graft within his government. He's now having to answer to those same clerics who have supported him in the past. What this says is that Iran's "frontman" may be out of a job soon and the US needs to be in on the action once this occurs. With the Arab Spring in full bloom (ok, so it's fall here in the US/Winter in some parts), the US needs to take advantage of this potential power vacuum and engage, not isolate them. Sanctions hurt those that can least afford it. They have only benefited the military, a scary notion in and of itself.
Send him to work for Al-Jazeera!
It does not seem that Iran is interested in engaging with the US, on the contrary, it is the buggy man that keeps the regime in power. This is the same policy that Venezuela has. Have big external enemy, to justify the regimes many shortcomings.
What is needed is to support the opposition.
The Arab Spring does work.
The buggy man strategy is used by numerous regimes around the world.
We have our own – Taliban/Haqqani/AQ/Saddam/Gaddafi/Somaila/Hezbollah/Venezuela/Cuba/....
During the cold war, we had the scariest buggy man of all times...
Neither the US nor Iran are interested in talking.
We will have to wait to see what fruit the Arab spring bears. It may not bring about what we, or the Arab people hope for.
None of these factors negates the one fact that we must talk - more so and more urgently to people we do not agree with!
Buggy man? Really?
Barry, leave the Iranians alone. Worry about Syriah for christtssake.
There's an old saying that carpenters think of solutions in terms of hammers and nails. Mr Zarkaria makes his living by talking, and people – including lots of news people – who make their living by talking seem to think that's the solution to everything, including dealing with tyrants. Well, I'd trust the judgement of a carpenter over that of Mr. Zarkaria when it comes to dealing with Iran.
Does that include politicians, because all they are doing is talking and posturing.
Perfectly expressed thought, in my opinion.
Fareed is yet another product of our society...be noticed and get rich. Problem is, he produces absolutely nothing constructive, productive and/or otherwise useful.
TOM, I completely agree. Your comment was one of the VERY rare examples of adding true insight into the topic.
No, there is no such "saying". However, there is the saying "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail", which perfectly describes you and those like you. You lack education and the capacity for rational thought. You are ill-equipped to deal with any situation more complex than a loose floor board. "Talking" is where and how solutions begin. Has been since we left our grunting cousins behind in the caves we dwelled in 20,000 years ago. It sounds like you're closely related to the ones we left behind. It seems somehow you got hold of a computer. You probably clubbed its owner to death.
... hi Timetraveler ... I'm sorry for the ill-natured emotion expressed in your comments; and I apologize for anything I wrote that may have made you upset. Actually, though, there is such an expression (the one I mentioned about carpenters)... and I am also familiar with the one to which you alluded. And now, if you'll allow me to be a friend of yours in this comments section – at least for a moment – I'd like to offer some friendly advice: When attempting to use words to convince anyone of anything, one of the most respected books on the subject is "Getting To Yes" by Fisher and Ury. It's actually somewhat of a reference manual used by many US diplomats. If convincing by mouth is your game, you'll find it will take you about as far as such methods can go. I wish you well.
You need therapy.....badly
Well said.
I recall that President Obama tried to engage Iran in the early days of his administration, but Iran was not interested. As long as they view us as the "Great Satan", there does not seem to be much room for talks.
Agreed... IRAN is in the business of disinformation, target the infidels, and the suppress of their own. One of the only things that George Bush Jr. got right: the axis of evil; he just needed to add the 1% to that list.
Occupy is garbage. Don't count them in your graces as good people, nothing but socialists. While I agree that the anglospheric elite need to be dropped on their heads, Americans would do well to be vigilant of who they support in these trying times. You could very well be welcoming an even greater evil, one who will effect permanent change in your family model because it's something they feel is right, tell you you can't be Christian or Muslim because it causes trouble, tell you you cannot own guns because they kill people while criminals won't abide their laws, tell you you may not own more than one car etc. Yeah don't support Occupy, support America by flooding your reps with calls and being more attentive to local elections.
This all reminds me of the 60's movement, but with a new and frightening overtone of civil-war... The Tea Party calls this movement socialism; the rest of us call it anti-fascism. When President Obama was elected, the extreme-right were threatening civil war – and ran to purchase their weapons; that the “Muslim-Terrorist” was going to take away. Now we are moving a major step closer toward what I would call the “AMERICAN-SPRING”; be it peaceful of by historic means.
Actually, Iran did not outright refuse Obama's overture. Iran highlighted that the U.S. was already pressuring Iran through sanctions, blockages, etc. (possibly covert operations and support of groups like Jundallah) which would make negotiating meaningless for Iran under coercion. Khamenei went on to say that if the U.S. changed its behavior, Iran would follow suit, but not otherwise.
I believe that the demand was reasonable, as the U.S. is the one with the upper hand and stronger position who can begin the process of reconciliation. Otherwise, Iranian leaders would look bowing to U.S. pressure in the eye of Iranians.
Also, Iran made a number of gestures which went ignored by the U.S. For example, Ahmadinejad congratulated Obama on his presidency (a first such move since 1979). Later, when Iran agreed to send its low-enriched Uranium to Turkey in return for reactor fuel, the U.S. simply ignored the offer and strongly sponsored yet another UNSC sanction on Iran.
'Iranian' If what you're saying about Iranian overtures for talk is true then the fault is ours for not engaging with Iran ; but consider that most of the things you pointed out are indirect overtures for discussion – why not directly engage ? Engage discussion and dialog At least at the (secret for now) diplomatic level .
Rubbish. Obama's supposed "outreach" to Iran was just words, he had exended US sanctions on Iran just 11 days earlier and had appointed former Bush administration officials like Dennis Ross and Stuart Levey to run Iran-policy.
The U.S. is the most enamored of the boogeyman concept. Especially since we have the least to worry about. Perhaps we don't have to control Iran? Let the UN do its job.
Wow, you are naive. You actually think the UN actually works. Each of the countries in the UN is so busy trying to get ahead of the other and get the most in political/economic/opinion based advantage, it has never and will never fully work.
Obama sold hos soul to big banks he is same as Bush!
Please go back to a remedial English class, and while you're there – you may want to explore a bit more history.
I can see your English is better, however, you are a racist. Not even Shakespeare spoke a perfect English. Only in Texas English is spoken perfectly.
I'm racist because I don't refer to our President in the same sentence as G. Bush Jr. LOL! In 2008, before Obama took office, the decision was made to bail-out the banks; perhaps the revisionists truly have rotted your minds.
I give Fareed credit for telling it like it is. And,that is that Obama's policy towards Iran is no different than President Bush's. The left in this country can't seem to come to grips with the fact that Obama lied to us when he said that he would handle Iran much differently than Bush. I guess you people didn't think this is what you were going to get when you voted for this guy, huh? Obama and Hillary,"we can't allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon."
Enough with the fighting. How about you worry about whats going on over here.. Cap the price of GAS at $1.50 A gallon, This is plenty and gives the gas companies and oil companies more than enough profit. This would fix the economy FAST and still we do not do it. why is that??? If you really care and want to get votes then thats what you need to do..
You are thinking only in the short-term. Sure, lowering th price of gas would put more spending in people's pockets in the short-term. However, this would only speed up the process of oil extraction, since people would drive more and buy more gas guzzlers.
Eventually, the oil wells will dry up. The earlier this happens, the worse it will be because we need to have alternative fuel sources in place by then. If we don't have such, then the economy will collapse at that point in time.
A better solution would be to keep gas prices high so investment in alternative fuel sources is cost productive and so people will buy more fuel efficient vehicles instead of gas guzzlers.
The last thing we need to do is focus only on short-term solutions and ignore long-term problems.
You reached the right answer, but using a total misunderstanding of economics. Cap the price of gas and producers would loose money, so they stop producing, so we get shortages and rationing. That leaves more oil in the ground for the future, while destroying the economy today.
In most cases where the government tries to subsidize a "green" outcome, I question even the goals. They use bogus environmental theories to justify bad goals leading to bad policies.
But to the extent that any of those goals are correct, the policy is still horribly wrong. The true purpose and only effect of green subsidies is crony capitalism delivering bigger kickbacks into the Democrat's reelection campaigns.
If the real goal were the "green" outcome, they would raise the gas tax (moderately at first) and let the market sort it out.
The Democrats always select the most corruptible path toward any claimed environmental goal, because their true goal is the corruption.
Or, we can sell gas for $2.00 a gallon and run out of it quicker, and then we'll have to stop dilly-dallyin' around about developing those greener and more sustainable energies.
Thank you. Obama need to leave all these folks alone and worry about what the hell is going on here. People on here talking about Iran this and Iran that, need to look at our government before they try to say anything bad about anyone else.
Your math is bad and your logic is worse. Gas costs the oil companies more than $1.50 a gallon. The profit portion is a small fraction of what you seem to think.
If you can't afford gas, drive less, take public transit, carpool, deal with whatever inconvenience or cost that entails because you don't have the right to get cheap convenient driving by stealing from someone else.
The economy as a whole would be better off if the government increased the gas tax (especially if it could balance that be reducing more destructive taxes). Push the price of gas even higher and let market forces sort it out.
Selfish shortsighted fools in the public drive cowardly politicians to raise taxes only where fools fail to understand the whole economy pays, while leaving gas tax stupidly low just because you understand that you pay the gas tax.
The most important thing, even more important than stopping Iran from having nukes .. is ensuring that rational people are in charge. You would think Zakaria would realize that. As long as Iran is a religious ruled state it will cause trouble not just for its own people but for the whole world. You see when religious people are in power and things aren't going right they start blaming "sinners" and "infidels" for their problems. And then start putting more and more draconian rules. This is true for every religion. And it usually works with the people until everything reaches a boiling point. My suggestion .. let Iran reach its boiling point, let the people drag their clerics out into the streets and bid religious rule its final goodbye.
It almost happened in the 50s and 60s, but that had to be put down because it was Soviet sponsored. Communism may have been worse –there would have nukes by now .. with all that oil.
That statement right there is what gets me?Why should we stop them from building nukes? Hell we go them, everyone around them have them, so why is a problem if they have them? Hmm, that always puzzled me.
We (USA) don't have the right, the responsibility, the need, nor even the ability to free the people of Iran from their evil government.
We do have the need to protect the world from Iranian nukes, and because we (and likely only we) have the ability, we also have the responsibility.
The people of Iran fear their government more than they hate their government. That is unfortunate for them. They would be better of revolting sooner rather than later. But that problem still belongs to them and not to us.
Really and truly the United States doesn't need to change the policy its had with Iran for the last 30 plus years. They attacked Americans in their own country and hey we made them pay rightfully so regardless of what Fareed who wasn't born in this country says. Fareed its easy to criticize a job you didn't do. Obama's policies are working just fine and it is different from Bush.
In case you weren't listening the world likes us more now then it did 3 years ago. I think thats a start in the right direction.
Fareed, if you want to know what will happen, ask AIPAC. They manage our Middle East foreign policy.
is that the jew tribunal?
How about we leave the world the fu ck alone and handle our own business for once? Is that even possible?
That is obvious, once you have a whitehouse full of traitors, of course it will breed more treason.
I guess next target is Iran now since we are withdrawing from Iraq. The war never stops.
Actually the Proxy Wars Iran has been persuing to fight against the US, Western Europe in Iraq and Afgahnistan, and Israel through Hammas and Hezbollah has already taken a toll on our human and econimic cost that would be better served racheting up the pressure on Iran, and the continual support they recieve from Russia's KGB Al Caponic Communist Corruption through Nuclear technology, weapons, and China's newly found Corupt Communist Currency. China is of course a percieved Neo-World Power that Bejing has been leading we Americans to believe, while Moscow has been China's partner in thier phasod to destablise our interests abroad and directly through trade and a Military Alliance.
"Obama should return to his original approach and test the Iranians to see if there is any room for dialogue and agreement." Fiirst, Mr. Zakaria, he is 'Mr.' Obama. Second, we do not negotiate with terrorists. What on earth are you thinking?
Time for USA to mind its own business.
no kidding, eff everyone else
I agree that our cost of freedom through the lives of our men and women in uniform, and the economic costs we have paid don't appear to have had the instant success many look for in this I want It Now Generation. However if we stuck our heads in the sand while Hitler was taking over the world or the USSR's quest for world domination, we would be a prisioner inside our own Western Hemisphere. At least if we take the fight to the Middle East, our heads will be held high as we fight for freedom in the sands of Tehran. We must percevere and overcome evil where ever it rears its ugly head i.e. Iran. In the words of MLK Jnr., "How can we sit idealy by while people are oppressed against thier rights and freedom" (Not exact words, but very close). Remember that if you can't stand up for freedom, then you are doomed to fall for oppression.
LEAVE IRAN ALONE! Obama is a bigger war monger than Bush. Stop wasting our tax money on endless wars and spend the money here at home 1st. Looks like Obama is going to use Iran to distract the American people from his failed economic policies.
Of course we all seem to forget about what twitter has done to iran, I don't think bombing them is in the cards.... What if next time they could shut off the communications grid...
Fareed face reality for what it is not for what you want it to be. How can you communicate or sit at the table with Iran when their religious belief based on Sharia law states that the Western world is evil. Are you going to tell them their religion is wrong!! Perhaps you have a religious bias that motivates your work. I am done reading your articles – you are out of touch of reality. Start being a realist and not an idealist.
What according to the author would be the difference between Obama engaging Iran and Chamberlaine engaging Hitler ? In both cases the engaged fascist warmongers were only seeking to gain time for progress in their aggressive agenda, who regarded the engaging appeasing politicians as naive weak;lings who could be manipulated to the fascists' advantage.
This dull guy's boring opinion on the front page? Come on, CNN!
What do want?a soap opera or some reality? This man is teaching you something.Pay attention and you will gain from it.
Like every politician he LIED. Obama promised much, but delivered nothing. He promised fair-trade, yet he just signed three more unfair-trade agreements that will put more Americans out of work. He promised a public-option healthcare, but caved in to special interest. He promised NO bailouts for Wall Street, yet he gave OUR money away to the wealthiest. Promises, promises, promises, a couple puffs of air that are soon forgotten.
This Fair Trade Deal: Wall Street fat cats lobbied Washington D.C. big time for this deal. While Food prices are skyrocketing here in the United States (( the main reason is Feed Corn , Soybeans, and Alfalfa )) these commodities are vital to everything that is groceries we Americans buy today. (( Wall Street Hedge Funds )) they are going to sell these vital feed commodities to other countries, and drive United States food prices Sky-High. American produce farmers are slowly dying because the price of feed is way too high (( American produce farmers should get their animal feed first, )) to feed Cattle, Hogs, Chickens, and for Dairy products and for Cereals of all kinds, To keep food prices down here in the United States. What is left over use it for methanol and ethanol for gasoline additives. And then sell leftovers to other countries. I guarantee you other countries in (( this fair trade deal )) will be taking care of their country first. Stop Wall Street fat cat hedge funds Please get this news out, Copy and Paste now ! Container ships come in full, and they are leaving full of feed Corn and alfalfa !
Dale, you got it right ,right down to who's really making the money.I am going to spread this post from coast to coast
Some change, same same, run by a jew tribunal. Vote the liar Barry the Bummer out, he's just W. part 2. Ron Paul won't be run by the jews.
There will never be any relationship between iran and us until people in us stop thinking in such backward ways..for example...US attacked Iraq and killed hundred of thousands of people and destroyed that country....and Americans think iran is meddling in iraq and causing problems...or Afghanistan....US attached and destroyed what was left in that country and they accuse iran of meddling and getting invloved..until this kind of backward arragant thinking is prevelent the us will never have allies anywhere ...only dictators who steal money and kill their own people...such as saudis, kuwatis, UAE, etc etc
I agree with Fareed. Obama should try new approach.
I believe you are in a Neo-Islamic Western Disney Land continuum that percieves Iran's Revolutionary Guard training and supplying Islamic Terrorists to kill American Troops and millions of innocent misled civilians in the Muslum World is the solution to the problem. Now my question for you is which Tram did Fareed get on when he arived in Tehran?
OBAMA HAS GOT TO GO
Fareed, should we re-engage a country that is actively participating in the murder of US troops. Didn't Obama try to engage Iran when he first took office by not supporting the uprising protests that actually started in Iran? Is their room to have actual discussions with a country that is willing to murder it's own citizens in broad daylight for simply exercising the basic right to have their voice heard, or simply watching the protest, do you remember Neda and her last breaths, I do?
Why is your position constantly that it is the United States responsibility to engage that are anti American, anti cultural diversity and anti freedom? Should we engage a country that has sworn to the destruction of our closest ally, and has no tolerance for religions or cultures other than it's own? Should we engage a country that is actively arming flat out terrorist organizations like Hezbollah, Hamas, the Taliban and has itself conducted terrorist activities even over shore like in Argentina. Should we engage a country which is actively trying to undermine the governments of it's neighbors and inspire and enable the rise to power of more hard line fundamental religious leaders liek what is being done in Afghanistan and Iraq?
Maybe I am missing something, but it does not appear this countries leaders have any use for engaging the outside world other than for their own benefit and has such a skewed perspective of the world and the role they play that they will never really accept being part of a world community.
Maybe Fareed the path to change in Iran is leadership change their, removal of a fundamental leadership not only at odds with most of the world, it's neighbors and it's own citizens, but one that is also not concerned with the value of any human life and exports terror and has expressed openly it's desire to eradicate Israelis and Jews, I think Hitler did that as well didn't he.
Oh and I see that you have made considerable comparisons to this regime and Bushes, yet you fail to realize or mention that this administration has done nothing to address the nuclear issue.
Fareed, what is the end game with your approach to Iran? Do you believe that through diplomacy we can actually enable change in Iran and convince them from pursuing these activities. Do you really believe this? Or is this just a political statement and a stall, realizing that the only address for Iran overthrow of this regime most likely threw war, something most of the western world knew was needed until this administration came in and started apologizing for America and our greatness.
To those who will make the statements about the wars and the impact etc... We gave both Iraq and Afghanistan a significant opportunity for peace, prosperity and freedom. Unfortunately our efforts have been constantly thwarted by the likes of Iran and the Pakistan underground throughout.
I am ashamed that so many Americans talk about how bad we were as a nation when almost every soldier who returns to a man believes the wars and are missions were just and that we were doing something honorable. The argument we should be engaging in this country is whether or not every person in this world should have the opportunity to live free and have the unalienable rights that we have enjoyed now for over 200 years. And whether we should deal and ignore abuses of nations like Iran, Syria, China and even allies like Saudi Arabia against their people. I for one do not believe promoting or dealing with nations that abuse their people.
AMEN!
Brainwashing exist. Believe it or not.
NO Obama NEVER tried to engage Iran. He continued Bush's Idiotic policies.
Wrong, he did not make any statement about Iran when they had a public uprising, just plain wrong!
Unless you want to count two weeks after, when there was becoming domestic outrage here about his silence.
President Obama had sided with the Iranian government during 2009 uprising by comparing the leaders of green movement to the leaders of the government. When the demostrators chanted on the streets "Obama either with us or them", Prsident Obama failed to make a statement on time. He has tried to reach the Iranina nations by sending new year messages, but in reality he is pursuing the policies of President Bush which is more pressure on Iranian nation by imposting more sanctions.
I am surprised that how naive Mr. Zakaria is about Ahmadinejad.
why is an iranian reporter speaking as us?
I know, huh? What a commie islamist beyatch, he should STFU and go back to Iran
Bring on the Drones, negotiate from 1,000 feet.
my perspective is: stop attempting to be the friend of the people that caused you to immigrate to this country (either you, your parents, or both) and press ahead for a regime change...hopefully for a civilized minded one, ZackkariahH!
attempting to befriend the beheaders and fanatics of the middle east and the ones that spray paint "Death to America" on the belly of their soviet era doomed to crap helicrappers will only ensure that you end up as their minnion...and you do not represent the United States....
why would you even interview the rat eyed buffoon? don't know about you Fareed sometimes
The reason we are not engaging Iran is that when we do, we get slapped down. It is not in the interest of the regime to engage. Without the foreign enemy, they have no legitimacy.
There is no "re-engaging" Iran as long as it is being run by the Islamo fascist theocrats. All we can do is hope for the Arab Spring to take hold in Tehran and give them as much support as we can. Such an opportunity presented itself in the wake of the fraudulent election. The silence from Barack Obama was deafening.
And they gave him a Nobel Peace Prize? For what?
Our overwhelming mere military presence in other countries, along w/numerous wars, causing more hate towards us, busting us financially and lost of lives, speaks loudly. We're not saving the world. Troops along our borders to entertain the cartels/illegals and spending their pycks to help our border states w/tax base and small businesses to rehire should be our focus. So besides Iran, what's next? NKorea? Cuba? Africa? And for you reply folks out there, I'm a conservative. This time Fareed's got my agreement.
Ghods forces were behind attacks on India. They try to make fires all around the world to distract eyes from Iran. This is their declared strategy as it is called asymmetrical warfare. And Mr Zakaria does PR for the Islamic regime and acts as a plastic surgeon for this monster because all the costs of his stay in Iran were paid by the regime there. Islamic Regime banns independent press but pay huge to big boys like CNN and BBC and insure them on their missions if they would say nice things.
Fareed, Iran cant feed itself as it has almost no arable land, cant create gasoline and has to import it, though it produced billions of oil, wont let its politics play out in a free sense at elections and tortures its own people against global accords, tries to plot to kill diplomats in foreign nations, manipulates Iraq and Syrian and Hamas politics fueling political chaos, spreads lies at the UN about 911, and now trying to build bombs to wipe Israel off the face of the planet!
Seems to me they have created and charted their own private nightmare, social, economic, global, political...through BAD decisions.....the United States cant change that or influence that when through their own ignorance they choose to destroy themselves and their neighbors and their own people. The finger needs to be pointed squarely with their leaders!
With every new "engagement" with Iran, Obama enhances the impression of him in the Middle East. A naive adolescent who can be out manipulated with ease . He greatly damages US clout in the region, because he evokes no respect or fear, whatsoever. A (sorry) joke by Mid East standards.
the US needs to change its policy, vision towards Iran. This terrorist regime is not only destroying Iran, Iranian lifes but also causing threats, instability in that region! Its time to cut off the head of this Dragon
...
Way to go fareed. I like your take very much.
Why are we dealing with terrorists? Seriously we need a president who's going to take care of America first.
Well said. Nice piece of thoughtful writing, incredibly rare in these parts.
A thoughtful thinking-NOT,wishful thinking would be more like it.
Obama has proven over the past 3 years that he has better foreign policy experience than any other GOP candidate. This man found and killed Osama bin Laden, ended conflicts in Egypt and Yemen, aided the Libyan rebels who eventually killed Gadhalfi, and is finally getting our troops out of Iraq. Obama's gettin' it done, plain and simple, and if it weren't for the republican senators and reps blocking all of his proposals, he would have gotten a lot more done for the US, too.
Amen brotha'
In conclusion, I trust whatever Obama plans to do with Iran. While I understand Fareed's take on the matter, I just have a feeling there's more to the US-Iran relationship than we know about.
I think Iran should just be turned into a huge parking lot.
A glass parking lot. It would only take one plane and one bomb.
When Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the so-called "Supreme Leader", Ruhollah Khomeini, step down and we have free elections in Iran then the United States will deal fairly with Iran.
The problem is that all of our foreign policy "thinkers" are Yale grads and AIPAC members. That's the problem. Obama's advisers are essentially the same as they were for Bush, hence no real change that is sourced from a new and different perspective.
These idiots kept our Embassy people hostage for a year and kept 3 hikers until we paid them off, then they murdered their own people in their own streets. Do you think we should apologize to these animals for that, the big, bad, American Satan? They're damned lucky our reponse isn't measured in megatons! Until Iran has a Government that respects their own people, how can they respect anyone else?
right on! It's a shame to have to nuke them, but it will be better for all in the end
So who would you have us follow...Fellows of Bejing University or the Shcolorship theories of Forgien Relations in the University of Moscow. Much to your shagrin Cassandra, spreading your wings of peace through negotiation and understanding fundamenntal Human Rights is a Disipline forgien to the analysis that comes out of Tehran's envey of American Economic and Military Power that we have that Iran has distain for. It is America's ability to protect the rights and freedom that Tehran also has distain for, while thier solution to the problem is simplistic.
It is Komeni and Akmenijahn who use Proxy Terrorism as a vehicle to continue thier thirst for power and control over the greater Muslum world to hold the non-Muslum world hostage to the tyranny of thier Revolutionary Guard to fight proxy wars of Islamic Terrorism through aL-Qieda, Hezbollah, Hammas, and the Muslum Brotherhood to have Muslums percieve they are beheading the evil American Serpant along with its Zionist body when they kill innocent Americans, Israelis, and Westerners in Europe. There for to sit down with Akmenijahn and expect a different path that leads to a peaceful solution goes far beyond the Western Realism of the Neo Persian Empire that Tehran is persuing.
go away Obama, you bother me!
Iran is a counrty governed extreme idiology. There is almost no way to change that except by removing the people in power. As nieghbors, we ,Saudis, have suffered from Iranian interference in Arab affairs for the past 30 years. The tone of solidarity by Mr. Zak is exactly the kind of speech that encourages Iranian tyrants holding on to power and disregarding the seriousness of "other options"
I think you had better rethink about the position that your country has these days and specificly after 1979. at least your country is the most beneficiary of an under sanctioned iran. so let them interfere saudi internal matters to be more boycotted by west that will have a wonderful impact on your country's revenue of oil. yeah my friend that is the story. but keep this in your mind that this situation will change soon.
Thank u my friend. I think Saudi oil would find its buyers to the last drop. We need tension-free region not the suffering of other peolpe. However, change is certainly coming but, for sure, no one can tell. The issue is that Iran only one pole, the other is israel. If the Iranian didn't take the intiative Israelies will do. The situation is so complicated that a spark in the region may lead to a chain reaction threatening interests of many other nations.
This is really important to know that the regime changing in iran is not US business but people efforts. Iran cannot be compared with countries like afghanistan, pakistan, and avev arab countries in the region. the vast majority of iranian youths population are educated therefore you cannot claim that overthrowing the regime wont affect their people desire of having nuclear power. we are enough informed to not to destroy all of our resoureces at the expense of having nuclear power. But im completely agree with you that US should reengage with iran to find a way to pave its wavy relationship with iran once for ever.
Yes; great idea. Put the Iranian President on the extermination list. US tax payers are going broke paying for US foreign policy which operates like the mafia.
It takes two to tango; Iran has two left feet.
So your saying we should have made nice with HILTER, ARE YOU JOKING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmmm. There's a Theocratic nation, in the developing world. I wonder why he might have to take the same disciplinary approach as past President? I understand that It's the medias job to bring questions to the people, but this is clearly just an attempt to try and make an issue out of nothing. Iran is a dangerous nation, if they ever get nuclear arms the current regime will more than likely eternalize itself. Do you think that when they get Nuclear arms they're gonna be friendly or hostile?
Exactly! I hope the American people realize soon that the current regime in Iran needs to be toppled. I'd rather have a war in Iran now, than a full scale nuclear war in 20 years
Mr. Zakaria forgot to use the word "LIAR" as it fits Obama to perfection.
Nr Zakaria,
with all due respect you have no idea what you are talking about.
I remind your readers that you said a year ago thet teh supreme leader Khameniei is the most popular personality in Iran, it showed to me and all Iranians inside and outside Iran that CNN and you in person is just a silly journalist lloking to make news and nothing more
wish you all the best and please shut up when you don't know the peoblem!!
Obama is Bush, except more criminal. Impeach the Assassin-In-Chief.
and in the meantime vote in romney the mormon, right? you're an idiot. this is one of the best presidents we've ever had.
Wow, I am interested, on what basis do you qualify your remark, your obvious religious prejudice, the economy, jobs, foreign affairs? Please indulge me as I am undecided and would like to understand I should vote for Obama to be president for another 4 years? I guess I am asking for his accomplishments in these areas?
don't speak ill of Bush, he is mentally retarded, so that's just not right. Cheney is the biggest murderer since the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia
*sigh* didn't Obama already try that, mr. Zakaria? Didn't it basically go nowhere because of the iranian regime's own intrasigence?
Zakaria is relly a surprise. He's really as stupid as he looks.I didn't think anyone cuold be that stupid.
He better watch out. Israel, the real boss of US foreign policy in the region, may not approve and he'll be wiping the egg off of his face again like when he tried to appoint Charles Freeman to the National Intelligence Council. Israel slapped him in the face and told him who he could appoint.
Isreal is the only friend the U.S. has in the middle east.
Friend???? Israel is not our friend, they are out owners!!!!! And for those of you shouting, BOMBS AWAY, use some common sense. Bomb Iran and you cause WWIII because of Iran's ties to China and Russia. Diplomacy is, and should always be the first option. Attacking another nation should be the absolute LAST option. Remember the Cuban missile crisis. It was settled through diplomacy!! If we had just attacked Cuba, WWIII would have occurred in 1962, It is common sense, plain and simple. The U.S. government lied us into war with Iraq because Hussein was going to switch over to the Euro. No WMD found in Iraq, yet the war raged on for 8 years?? Now all of these unfounded statements about Iran? Are you fools going to fall for the same thing again?
I believe it is time to engage with Iran. It only makes sense. The population is young, educated, financially forward thinking and ready to move forward. The Obama – Clinton team are the right people to pick this assignment up and run with it.
As if they are just waiting for a wink and nod from an American administration.
Why doesn't the US government just get out of the region and stop trying to control the oil reserves of the world. This has got nothing to do with controlling nuclear reactors... It is merely the plausible reason that the US Gov believes will be enough to convince the US citizens to have yet have another war...... (Oil Grab)
Is it not surprising that the 3 largest oil reserves in the world are in Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia and Libya is 9th..... Stop believing the stories and let other countries determine their own destiny....... The only reason that the Americans are hated in this region is because it is clear to the people in the middle east what they are doing there..... The Ameriacan people have been beaten into submission by the constant fear campaigns ......... Just go home and mind your own business .......
Farid, as intelligent as you sound on TV, I was bewildered by this article. It seems that you do not understand that the building foundation of the Islamic Republic and its entire legitimacy is based on her anti-American stand. They would have no leg to stand on if they abounded their anti-American policy, and move toward a more open society. You are dead wrong if you think that the head turbanator (ayatolah Khamenei) would change his policy of the 33 years of anti-Americanism, he would simply have no legitimacy left to rule. And all of this on the heel of Mr. Arbab Sayar plot? Get real man. Your assertion that the nuclear program would go forward regardless of who rules Iran is flat out wrong. As an Iranian I know for certain there is a huge anti nuclear movement in Iran which is suppressed by the regime and ill informed/uninformed pundits like you just echo each others statements to the contrary. I bet you the first thing to go in a new government in Iran is the nukes. I was truly disappointed by this article.
I respectfully disagree. Iranians in Iran and USA have been largely in support of the right to possess nuclear energy since the 1970's. There are people in Iran against the nuclear program, but it is not a "huge" movement by percentage of the population. Nuclear weapons would be a different matter.
Let's have a referendum on the nukes and see s how much support it has.
Long overdue.
To deal with Iran is simpler as that:
1. The iranians are ready for a Regime Change.
2. They do not want a Foreign Military Srike.
3. The Sanctions although gradual, have just started to criple the Regime, though putting an immense economic pressure on ordinary Iranians.
4. Iranians are ready to take their countries business into their hand, in a form Democtratic Government.
5. A Democratic Regime works in Iran, because Iranians don't define freedom in the boundaries of Islam like arab countries. So they dont want sharia laws. Iranians democracy works 100% and maybe better than Turkish Democracy.
6. What US government has to do is to Help Iranians inside and outside to create a Democratic Interim Government,
with Representatives from all Opposition groups and parties Inside and Outside of Iran. The Interim Government must be created outside of the country, and all members of Interim Government have to be provided with the facility and means to be active.
7. The People of Iran will rise themselves against Iranian Regime if they find the Interim Government elligible democratic. The Iranians need to know that there is an eligible and Reliable Interim Governemnt as a substiute for Iranian Islam Regime.
8. This solutions does not require billions for a millitary strike in Iran and It WORKS.
be quiet "fahreed"
this country needs to be dealt with big time, get over it/get out of america.
AS IF a president can change his policy toward Iran without AIPAC's say-so.
Obama's hands are tied by the Military Complex that runs our country. See what happend to JFK when he was working for Peace ?
Those are the ones who should be brought to their knees for they are the ones who are in a time warp. All they see is enemies who should be taken out.
stormy
WOOW if you do not know jack about Iran..you should NOT say anything.it looks very bad on you.
Iran is the most self sufficient country in the world and exports over 7 Billion$ of fruits and food stuff annually.
Next time you see pomegranate and pistachio and peaches( 50 years ago it was called persian apple in English) remember that they came from Iran originally and still Iran export them more than any other country in the world.
Iran also produces 1.6 Million cars a year(better qulity than ford and chevy) and has one of the greatest Refining capacity in the world.gasoline in iran was 40 cents a gallon up to last year thus the import. now it is 2.80$ a gallon and refining capability of Iran is going to triple in 18 months.
I just let you know that Iranians in general are more secular than most nations including Americans and have a profound hatred of islamic regime.the rest of your comments were just Brain washed nonsense that you hear from news outlet.i suggest you watch 3 minutes trip to Tehran on youtube and goole samand.
Until Iran have a leader that think with his brain rather than one that continue to think with his nose, we will not talk to them.
Time to re-engage Iran? This will never happen. Our hilly billies are too dumb and AIPAC and the Industrial Military Complex are too strong. Once again the cost of war will be happily paid by all Americans for a long long time(talk of socialism?) and the profits from the war will be instantly pocketed by the oil and defense companies.
All on a sudden Fareed and it's cohorts has changed their mind. What did happen ?
Talk NEVER harmed or killed anyone! Iran's Regime! is not any worst than, Saudis, Kuwaitis, Yemen, Jordan, Israel, old or new USSR, old or new Communist China, any of the old Eastern Block's Countries. So what have we gained after more than 60 Years of not talking (unconditional) with Cuba? that some of you think we are gone get from Iran? unless you are DREAMING about regime change!!!!! they are not going anywhere. Their Existence depends on Constant state of WAR, exactly like ISRAEL!!!!!
Another Reason we need Ron Paul.
It sure is funny how Fareed's idea sound like he is plagiarizing what Ron Paul has been speaking about for years. Many of the top GOP candidates do this to Ron Paul yet he is considered an underdog. Do your homework and you will find out for your self. Fareed (and RP for that matter) is correct, this method worked for the US with the Soviets and the Chinese but for some odd reason we abandon it for the Iranians. I still haven't figured that one out.
Cassie Chu izzit reely u, or are u that JO alot anti-semite tosser who ranted his hatred earlier?
Brilliant..as usual..yes we do need to engage them..the Iranian cuop in 1953 started the U.S. down this road and we see the blow back from that decision still resonate today..it's time to talk and move forward..else we risk another senseless war as we had in Iraq.
Zakaria got it right that Obama's Iran policy is the same as Bush's was. But the rest of what Zakaria said is nonsense. The policy has not been pressure. The policy has been occasionally talking about pressure but never doing anything. Despite Obama's other actions, the US still retains real economic power in the world, and we should be using that power to prevent Iran from finishing nuclear weapons. I think that can still be enough. But if it isn't, we need to use military power. We cannot allow Iran nuclear weapons and "making nice" won't make them nice.
This article seems to ignore the fact that the change in the Administration's outlook occurred as a result of the fraudulent elections that put the current government in power. Negotiating with, and thus recognizing the legitimacy of, the current Iranian government would seem to be a continuation of the "negotiate with dictators" policy that has caused so much havoc in American policy over the past few decades. These regimes always fall eventually, then we have to explain to the new democratic governments why we supported dictatorships in their countries for so long.
Stormy
Wantch '3 minutes trip to Tehran" and " Tehran persian nights" on youtube.
GOOGLE "samand"
You welcome.
haha...some of humanity has paranoyas that medicine won't cure...lol..look one wants to know a bad ass sometimes..
As long as there is an understanding established...they want to be hyper about economy and nuclear energy let em...
Who cares? Really? Wish I had that comment on another thread about Iran...said they endured over 40 inspections that found nothing...stop being mean to the big dog and establish respect for dominance in an area of the yard you need a friend...or don't...whatever...lol...back to the Remedy...over and out...
The Iranian people as a whole a wonderful people. The problem is that their leaders are f-ing nuts. They want to return to King Darius's vision. And that vision in nuts. Conquers of the world. Those days are over. We need to all make peace and work together to make a better world for everyone. Otherwise we will wipe each other off the face of this planet.
Here is a thought. How about we work on energy independence, like Brazil did, and say f* you to the middle east. Retarget our nukes to each capital city in the middle east, and tell those murdering mfers (Christian, Muslim, secular, and otherwise) that if your stuff hits our shores, you will have a country and a life no more. We have the ability to be energy independent if we could shift our funding from big oil. We could be independent, free of pollution, and free of our disasterous crap in the middle east, all with modest investment.
Yes we should do a lot things to help our country. But if we nuke these countries that you mentioned it will only destroy the planet. Nukes are obsolete. We need to all stop being tribesman and start to develop a world society that works together in developing positive things for all. This might sound corny what I am stating but we only have one planet to live on.
I don't think the President needs Fareed's advise on foreign policy. I think he's got it down.
It is simple. There are two reasons for war. One is to kill people and other to make lot of money. Pres. Ike on Jna16h 1961 warned all of us. Beware of the Military Industrial Complex.
Right or wrong, Obama cannot afford to make any friendly gestures toward Iran because he will be labeled as "weak", "Moslem", or even "traitor" by the majority of Americans who have no clue what are the basic causes of this ongoing disagreement between the two parties.
The world sits by idly as they further develop their nuclear weapons program. Why are we waiting until it is too late? Nuke Iran from teh planey now!
Ron Paul is the only one that actually has a solid foreign policy plan. Stop trying to impose your will on these countries. remove sanctions from these countries and let them exist, true freedom will lead to prosperous nations and less hatred towards the US.
Heck Ron Paul sounds more like a liberal than a republicon. For that reason the republicons will not support him. He is to left wing for their party.
Fareed, you know very well AIPAC decides our Middle East policy.
a few facts that need disclosing each time cnn/zarkaria opens his mouth....zararia is a leftist muslim obama advisor....seems cnn/zakaria wont tell you his political leanings since they are clearly instep with cnn's views...remember that zakaria was delighted to tell us that 50 years from 9-11 america will have declined and 9-11 will be looked as the aniversary of that decline.........
Translation: Zakaria didn't say the right wing neo con things I want to hear, so now I'm going to hurl insults and invective at him.
Wayne it is ZAKARIA...not Zararia or Zarkaria .....you are a ignorant racist radical moron, you can't generalize people because the color or culture.you wish be smart many of my Muslims friends are ,they doctors ,engineers, they are not radical killers like you say,I have a heart surgeon friend who in the Iraq war helping American soldiers ,saving them and you and your big mouth just talk like DIARREA .I am from another Country and we are generalized because the drug cartel that means I am a user? use drugs? not at all .You don't know if someone in your family will marry someone that is not AMERICAN! This Country is like many other they want power and the reason of the wars are because POWER or having a BOZO for President like Bush who went to Iraq to look for WOMD and found one hole in that hole was Sadam that's was the WOMD how comical and sad kill all the American soldiers for nothing this bozo Bush by a psychoanalyst a DR. say : he is afflicted with "megalomania" it is a "mental disorder marked by fantasies of power ,wealth, and omnipotence "that was Bush our President .Listen ,Wayne I will stay with Obama for sure .....you don't know the rest of the story.....
It's pretty obvious why we're withdrawing our troops from Iraq. We'll be going right back into Iran in the spring.
And then you woke up from your dream.
Fareed-Yes- let's get cozy with Iran and Pakistan as they screw us! Get Real! You must be on the take!
Fareed may well be one of the most logical thinkers of our time, he never fails to impress and his ability to clearly state the reasoning behind his thoughts are excellent. Fighting with Iran because Israel is afraid of them is insane, America should be more afraid of Israel who seems willing to fight to the last American.
Since when has a politican's word meant diddly squat AFTER coming to power? It's always same old, same old! Nothing changed but the colour of skin and the degree of ugliness and corruption in foreign policy formation.
Remember, this guy was awarded the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE before the White House Oval Office Seat was even warmed up!
BUSH the "bozo" let the house very dirty....Obama promised it will be a Change..the house still DIRTY! .Someone said: the BUMS don't care about you and me ,they are getting their entilements alreday! they are a bunch of crooks Republicans and Democrats I am a Independent is least can I spill beans about both of them! the rich get richer ,the poor get poorer, that is America now!
Maria...in case you haven't noticed Bush is no longer president.
Obama lie #3,099,"I will close Gitmo in 2009."
Obama lie #3,100,"I will close Gitmo in 2010."
For the uninformed....Fareed has said that he has met with Obama ...and has given the general his take on various foreign policy issues.
But of course I know he is not longer our president ,thanks God that psycho is gone .....it not matter Obama is not doing a great job either .
Maria...no offense...but, if you are going to live in this country...could you take an English class or something so people can understand you? I'll even pay for it!
Take the country back; occupy before this goes any further
WE'VE HAD ENOUGH WAR
This is the typical King Obama thing. First he is demanding that Iran cannot have nuclear power and now he wants to be friends. The people of the Iranian part of the world are already upset with us and they will not tolerate Bobble head Obama. Make up your mind and stick with it. He is going to end up marking a bull's eye on our backs and then step away. Besides, we have enough of our own problems.
What will he do next, have a free trade agreement with them to create jobs for us. If that were the case we would be the ones who would have their stuff imported to us and not export out to us. Obama is just trying to make it look good either way so to try to acquire popularity for another term.
Obama never said he wanted to be friends with Iran. This is an opinion article by Fareed Zakaria suggesting we reengage with Iran. Try to keep up sparky. Your Obama derangement syndrome is causing you to see and hear things that don't exist...just like a crack user.
Petmeg....Obama and Hillary will continue to be hypocrites until they are gone. I think they flip a coin about what they are going to say about Iran on any particular day. Heads ...it's bellicose threat day.Tails...it's can't we all just get along day. I'd like to get these two out of office ASAP. I've watched and listened to Zakaria many times. If he was born in America I couldn't get to the voting booth fast enough to vote for him. He is one of the few with a head on his shoulders.
Fareed I would agree with you except that had Obama done what he said he was going to do from the outset and engaged Iran rather than continue Bush's idiotic and counter productive policy of pressure by outright lies or false accusations followed up by ineffectual sanctions which only serve as a catalyst and cause Iran to become even more self reliant at a faster pace, it could have worked. But now as another poster put it we have nothing to barter with. I guarantee you we will not go to war with Iran for a whole host of reasons. So Obama because he followed the idiotic neocon policies will be left just watching as those policies are proven to be foolish and ineffective as Bush was.
Time for the US Government to re-engage it's own population.
So true. Grizzled cowboys of yore would always tell you that if you stubbornly engaged a mule in a tug of war, the mule would always win unless you shot the damn critter. Since shooting is out of the question here, for now, the stubborn tug of war by pressuring Iran is not gonna go anywhere and the mule may even win.
When the Iranian President tesll you the holocaust didn't have and in the same tells you Israel needs to be destroyed I'm not sure this is a person who can be anyone's friend. His first problem is that he is insane. His second problem is he probably wants Nuclear weapons. Doesn't sound like a good combination no matter what or how we engage or not engage Iran. Personally I think if they ever manage to get Nukes then the rest of the world will give either Israel or America the green light to bomb it back the stone age. Something I don't think he truly understands.
Liberals have a way of discreiting common sense and distorting reality! Good comment
Yes, it is! But don't listen to republicans as they probably would like to engage them in war and as some of the teabuggers have said!, "Nuke them." Absolute military nut hatches!
With this bunch of religious throw backs????? We need a Reagan and a couple of bombs down their insane _______. PLEASE just show me one concrete thing that makes and reasonable person believe they want to be BFF!
Just what I was saying! Right wing nuts that have no brains, common sense or humanity!
I am not sure if you were listening or paying attention to what the reporter was saying! His last words in his conclusion clearly states Iran "It is the last great civilization to sit outside the global order. We need a strategy that combines pressure with a path to bring Iran in from the cold."... But why? Why should Iran join forces with the 'global order'....
Are you smart enough to come up with a logic reason? (Please do not mention the whole gimmick about war on terror)
By the way who is fareed zakaria anyway? USA policy analyst? Below is only of his wild berries back in July. This guy is total "B#$%^&*(((( ".
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/07/03/fareed-zakaria-ending-bush-tax-cuts-would-solve-budget-deficit
he's just a commie muslim reporter
He can be a commie or a Muslim. He cannot be both.
It looks promising. Iranians are not after atomic bomb, neither are they trying to assassinate or terror others. Who can forget the great Iranian achievements during history. Who does not know Avicenna (father of medicine), Al-kharazmi (inventor of Algorithm as it is derived from his name), Ibn-heitham (famous astronomer), jaber-ibn-abdollah-ansari (he purified alcohol for medical usages for the first time 1300 years ago), etc. Iranians have a lot to share and offer to the world. All of these scientists were grown in great Iranian civilization after Islam. It was Islam who encourages people to go after knowledge, peace, brotherhood and sisterhood. It also emphasize on treating people in a manner you like them to treat you. Imam Sajjad said: "whatever you like for yourself like for others, and whatever you dislike for yourself dislike for others". It was Islam who emphasized that women should go after learning and they should actively show their roles in society while they use modest clothes. Lets get together under the protection of one almighty strong kind powerful God who created us and to whom we will return". Who knows when he or she dies. Lets not to lose time.
This administration actually has a foreign policy? I didn't know that.
It's the one that's killed more terrorist leaders than Bush ever did, in far fewer years.
Farhud Zakaria belongs on the al-Jazeera network.
yep, he's on of them, the enemy
"None are more hopelessly enslaved, than those who falsely believe they are Free"
-Goethe- 1749-1832
I agree with Fareed. First, I want to say that all guys(including myself) have a hard time making good decisions. I shouldn't even be writing this opinion(LOL), but aside from all the politics involved, my first concern is for the women and children of all countries. Guys, we're not the only people on the planet. I think we should give peace a chance.
For a long time, the USA has tried to use SANCTIONS and FORCE on other countries to make them comply with our demands, just like the British tried to force their demands on us, and it NEVER WORKS. What works best is leaving things alone and letting TECHNOLOGY and MODERNIZATION do its thing . . . as happened in East Germany, Tunisia, and Egypt.
I agree with Zakaria because IRAN is not surrounded by US but we are made too many mistakes -IRAG has been given to
Iran in Golden plate to IRAN as both are SHIA MUSLIMS majority country and very soon(5 to 10 years) we will lose IRAG
anyway to IRAN and Afganistan soon will side with IRAN andPAKISTAN in any way and RUSSIANS are enjoing our stupid
fight and loss in Afghanistan and in the end IRAN Nuclear program will proceed at any cost and supporting SaudiArabia,
Kuwait Bahrin will not be in our best interest and some way to be found that we MUST soon back/front door to IRAN and
think again Bush and Binladen are responsible as we created Binladen and Bush invaded IRAG and then USA started sliding economically and militarily too as we kill one hundred and they kill one or two Americans. Please our politicians and
people in this GREATE COUNTRY must realise this and every one lunatic suicide bomber takes pleasure to harm us.
Mr.Zakaria
very nice trip to Iran and I think you like Ahmadi nejad and terrorist regime of Iran very much.
Go on . Islamic regime of Iran is a symbol of free society and peaceful government ! ?and number one in negotiation. you can give your proposal to Mr. Obama. In the near future you would see and taste that what mullahs can do.
I am so happy that after your trip to Iran you did not say Iran regime in democracy was similar to Sweden.
Yes, it is time to pay them back for 1979, how about 72 hrs straight of a little shock and awe, not Tehran, but some other convenient city.
"Obama's Iran policy looks a lot like George W. Bush's" – Why stop at the Iran policy? I would say his foreign policy has been almost identical in all cases. Neocons couldn't have been more lucky.
After the retoric and actions of Iran, we do not need them.
Maybe Obama hasn't had time to form a coherent Iranian strategy with his busy re-election campaign. His priorities seem to be re-election first and do the job later. Most of the time, he's on the road campaigning for HIS JOB anyway. He performs his duties as an elected leader in his spare time, which is not much, so Iran is way down the priority list.
We not only should engage with Iran we should make friends. There is only one catch, Israel. There is no way Obama will do anything to alienate his base. He has proven this repeatedly. Whatever the Israeli lobby asks of Obama he does. Because Obama is purely a politician, nothing more and nothing less.
I think a dialogue between Obama and Ahmedinejad would probably look like something written by Sacha Baron Cohen.
I didn't read the story. I quit reading Fareed's stuff ever since he said that people that disagree with Obama's policies are racist. There is no room in the world for that crap.
Keep sucking on that government cheese until you die of a massive hear attack, you fat disgusting parasite.
Keep your Friends Close & your Enemies Closer, LOL People are worried Iran will attack Israel & wipe them off the map, shoot, most of the Arab neighbors would do the same if the US didn't pay them big money not to, LOL When Push comes to Shove, Israel will launch some of the nukes the US gave them – how'd ya like them apples??? LOL
iran, iran, iran, they don't have a functional air force, but we should be afraid of them...right this iran nonsense is just that, nonsense. we arm their enemies, surround them with out military for decades, then tell them they should have a right to defend themselves. our biggest ally, israel, is occupying land that isn't theirs. it's 2011, does mite still make right? or maybe the USA should lead the world in peacemaking missions, not occupying everyone and bullying the planet to be in debt to the IMF. i'd like to retain some level of pride in this country, but going into iran would take away any that i have left. the usa does a lot of damage overseas, our wars based on lies and our coups by the CIA have resulted in multiple genocides, but we want to act like nobody has the right to have what we have? if i'm the rest of the world i'd want nuclear weapons also, the only thing preventing the usa from being called a terrorist state is the fact that the military complex owns the media. the rest of the world sees us this way. beating someone up and pillaging someones country does not make you right. our debt and economy are so bad that a collapse is inevitable, and going into iran would be the end of the united states. if we don't focus on what our real problems are then you can bet everything you've ever known on the fact that our day is coming. there are economies in the world that are tired of the usa bullying everyone, and they're doing just fine. i can easily foresee us invading iran and china saying 'ok that's enough, we want our bonds, we want our money' then what? we can't pay them, they don't accept the USD anymore, the USD is worthless now. so what's after that? then china says ok we can either invade you or you can sell your military. is that where people want this country to go? if you don't think it can happen, think again, it's happened repeatedly throughout history to empires who are behaving like the usa is right now. i love the united states, i think you'd be hard pressed to find a society of people more empathetic and more willing to fight for what is right, but you if you think that fighting wars is ever right, unless ABSOLUTELY necessary, you're wrong, you probably haven't fought in a war if you think that. it's time to move beyond this police state, it's time people demand that their country stop terrorizing other nations. iran is scared of irsael, why? because we gave israel hundreds of nuclear weapons, wouldn't you be scared too? it's time we heed the warnings of eisenhower, kennedy, and the rest who warned americans of the potential for the military to overgrow it's bounds and welcomes, well that time has long come and passed. demand that your country not send our boys and girls over for political wars, demand our country stop devaluing your currency by printing money that doesn't exist for wars that are based on lies, we can set the example again to the rest of the world on the right thing to do, we have truly lost our way.
WoW – you've said it all – nice writing! Only problem I see is that the people of the US need to take their Country back from the crooked Politicians in Washington who do whatever they want, even if the majority of the people tell them not to! I believe the 'Occupy Protests' are just the tip of the iceberg & there will be much more turmoil before either the People win or are taken down!
yeah these protests are just the beginning, wait until the inevitable collapse of the dollar state-side, it's going to happen, it's mathematically impossible for it not to happen, the can can only be kicked down the road so far, and i think we're at the end of the road, too many nations, 81 now, do not accept the dollar as currency because it has no actual monetary value. until we get to a gold standard, and the people hold their politicians accountable, and demolish the federal reserve, we don't have a democracy and we don't have a free market. i just think most people don't realize we're socialists right now, but we are. the cost of goods is not set by the market, the federal reserve prints money, which creates inflation, which sets the price of goods. a centralized bank who sets the price of goods is the definition of socialism, it's time people be educated and take this country back to what it is supposed to be, THE EXAMPLE.
The USA has always had an evil state to fight with since its beginning. Nothing new here......
I see little sense in re-engaging when once the Presidency changes parties (if not in 2012, it will happen sometime), we get a completely new (and opposite) foreign policy. All someone has to do is wait out our government, like the changing seasons.
Iran has been killing our soldiers for 10 years, yes, we should re-engage them, in a short, one sided, limited nuclear strike
you're suggesting we nuke a country? do you realize what that would do in this day and age? that would be the end of the USA, china, north korea, everyone you can think of would be aiming at us. that's a pretty ignorant statement, i hope it's made because you're uninformed about reality. we're in iraq illegally, there are multiple countries investigating trying bush for war crimes, and nato and the UN are listening to them. you might want to consider the fact that the united states never had any legal right to be in iraq, the iraqi's never wanted us there, and we've tortured innocent people. we're the bad guys over there, it's time to realize that. or course there are people fighting us, our war, that was based on a lie, has resulted in absolute genocide.
Stifle, I have spoken
Has anyone checked Fareed's green card? Deport him.
I would be in favor of engaging Iran – with tactical nuclear weapons. They committed a major act of war against the U.S. and have yet to be held accountable. They are also responsible for funding multiple terrorist organizations and channeling lethal weapons into Iraq that have directly resulted in hundreds of American fatalities.
when will the united states be held accountable for breaking the geneva convention rules and when will the united states be tried for war crimes? because we should be, international law was broken, and now your'e suggesting to the people who are fighting against us being there illegally that we should just 'YEAH NUKE EM' wow, i feel sorry for you, if you think just wiping a nation out, killing hundreds of thousands of people is ok, so that we don't have to answer for our activities. i hope you aren't christian sir.
you know it Jack, about 4 small nukes and all will be well
1 small nuke would bring about 300 stateside within minutes, what planet are you living on? do you think the USA is un-touchable? remember pearl harbor? remember 9-11? those would be a drop in the bucket if we ever launched any sort of nuclear weapon. there are entire continents that don't like us, the g5 countries wouldn't be able to protect us from that. nuclear weapons in iran is possibly the most ignorant idea i could imagine, you clearly have no idea about the world around you
Iran is a sovereign nation without a blood sucking central bank to enslave the people. Leave Iran alone. The people of Iran are more free than Americans whose birth certificate have been given to the Federal Reserve as collateral for the debt of the U.S. Corporation. Americans are slaves to the Federal Reserve.
Obama has been co-opted by AIPAC. AIPAC says don’t talk to Iran, don’t engage Iran, just sanction Iran. I had so much hope for Obama but he turned out to be just another Zionist stooge. We need to have a revolution in the US to free us from these leeches.
the head puppet of the stooges are the IMF and the federal reserve, and there are people in nearly every city in the streets today calling for the federal reserve to go. that's the main culprit, that's the stranglehold on our politicians necks. join the fight
To all the hillbilly rednecks on this page who are calling for bombing Iran: aren't you supposed to be in church today? Making out with Jaysus? What? Are you playing hookie again? You hypocrites make me sick.
I hate all organized religion equally, bunch of braid dead fairy tales
Obama while campaigning – "I will have our troops out of war by 2009!". Instead he reinforces one, gets us into Libya and Uganda, illegally. He is the greatest warmonger to exist, yet the liberals worship them because they are blind neanderthals.
Childish idealism will not work in the real world. Opening diplomatic ties with Iran would not make us any safer or help us strategically in the Middle East. It would put a strain on out ally Saudi Arabia, and in essence look like we are OK with state sponsors of terrorism. At the end of the day, have no doubt, Iran is the single largest sponsor of terrorist activity in the WORLD. They consistently supply Hamas, Hezbolla, the al Sadr army in Iraq, and the Taliban in Western Afghanistan. It is impossible to open up diplomatic ties until that sponsorship ends.
i agree that iran needs to be watched, but after we have fought multiple wars resulting in millions of innocent civilian deaths, shamefully i have to say that it is america that is the largest sponsor of terrorist activity, and our foreign policy is the reason terrorism exists. these groups spawn up to stop our illegal occupations. that's why a war on terror is brilliant, because it can never be won when you fight it with more terror.
The biggest problem between iran and USA is the double standards. US is accusing Iran of having nuclear ambitions (just ambitions not weapons since there is no evidence for that ) and at the same time they close their eyes on Israel and Pakistan and even help these countries ... Iranian are proud and despite of the regime they will not accept to be treated like second hand citizens. I am telling you this as a member of opposition and as an atheist.
Of course our goal is to completely overthrow the regime in Iran. They are sitting on the largest natural gas pocket in the world. There will be things thrown into the mix such as his repression of his own people, hatred of Israel, and crazy Iman's, but basically the reason in natural gas. Obama graduated from Occidental College in California, as in occidental Oil corporation. He's friendly to big oil just like Bush. They want that natural gas and if they have to steal it, so be it. Their latest attempt was that joke of a story accusing the guy in Iran of trying to kill a Saudi Arabian diplomat. Pulleeeze. That one fell flat on its face, even here where people believe anything the media talking heads tell them, but they'll try something else and eventually get us into a war.
Tards like you should not even live in the US. You probably believe that the US also created 9/11 right? haha people like you, bunch of conspiracy theoirists is what is giving these terror organizations and our enemies breathing space. Unfortuanley we have some in the government thats why iran still exists, if it was john mccain iran would be occupied by our troops long time ago.
This makes sense. When will we get out of the Israeli pocket and start taking a reasonable approach to Iran.
Nations never respond positively to sanctions. Sanctions did not make Saddam give up his chemical and biological weapons and instead, the sanctions resulted in over half a million children dying of lack of medicine and malnutrition. Sanctions have not caused significant damage to the Iranian economy to spur them to change gears, sanctions only work on countries with economies that are next to nothing like north korea and that only got them to cooperate temporarily. They still have nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and long range ballistic missiles. The fact that western leaders arent going to Iran themselves and engaging Iranian leaders face to face is childish, cowardly and the exact reason why Tehran will not take the west seriously. How do you expect me to take you seriously if you wont even talk to me face to face? Man to man.
Farred Z, is such a biased write that it makes no sense reading his crap. If you pay close attention, CNN for some reason always gets on the side of the real enemy. Iran is an enemy and fareed fears that the US will soon destroy the country that supplies our enemies and kills our tropps, but why would fareed care, he hates the US he just lives and works here to get people believing in what is not true, !! damn i hate cnn and then people says fox is not fair, GO FOX NEWS!!!!! they would never hire such a retard liek you Fareed, I wont be surpirsed if you join the taliban one day.
agreed.
When is europe going to look to themselves and judge themselves before we judge others
Europe and the USA have criminals within government who are running their countries to protect these criminals. Obama has the support of the people but not the support of government because he is trying to rid his government of criminals. The UK police, fire and ambulance services are corrupted also.
There is also Bill Gates who gives money to charity but gave six milliion to a Vet College in Bearsden, Glasgow to cover up what he is doing. Animals have a high chance of Liver disease and Kidney disease along with diabetics because we are under control via technology. Bill Gates is not what he appears to be but a evil man who wants to control governments for his own means.
It is time for change but what change does europe real want. We have a United Nations but it appears we are not united except in crime.
"UBUNTU".
At the end of his thoughts he says, "Iran is a country of 80 million people"
Yes, most of whom cannot even live in Freedom. Regime Change is the only Way to Bring Iran in out of the Cold. You can leave the mullahs in the cold or the extremely hot for all I care, just don;t forget that the Iranian People want Regime Change and A Country that lets them be Free. As Americans we know what that means and we wouldn't want anything less which I'm sure they wouldn't either.
They are ready to stand up, like in Libya, Let's Support them.
YEAH LIKE IM GOING TO LISTEN TO SOME EGYPTIAN SAND RAT, I DONT THINK SO
JINSA is likely a part of what keeps us from moving forward in a logical way. Dick Cheny, John Bolton and James Woolsey have all served on the board. http://www.jinsa.org
Wait a minute ... wasn't it just two weeks ago when the President accused Iran of plotting to kill the Saudi ambassador? Talk to these people? Are you kidding. Just admit it. You are a hate America first guy
Mark, and you fell for that one? Whew! OK I have some swam-–errrr.....waterfront property in Florida for sale. You interested? I'll make you a good deal!
How about this: How about we stop routinely overthrowing governments in the Middle East and stealing their natural resources and instead concentrate on our domestic problems such as jailing criminals who trade naked shorts on Wall Street or something? Or we could bring some troops home and deport some illegals back into Mexico where, for some reason, they don't want to live? It's funny watching these comments that 'iranians think this" or "iranians think that".. How do you know? America's biggest problem is trying to be the dictators of the whole planet while claiming to represent freedom. Egos are huge.
Prez Obama is a very intelligent talker, that's it!
if you think Iran will ever be friends with the usa while they are in israels pocket you are haveing a laugh ,iran will enentually unite the middle east against the usa ..................
Iran is an isolated small country that has watched the united western armies take over Iraq and feed Saddam to his own people, assist the fall of Libya and Gadhafi, witnessed the meltdown of Egypt, and observed from a safe distance the westernization of Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait. Saudi Arabia plays all of us against one another and sides with whomever has the most going on. But pictures of Saudi Prince Awaleed with Rupert Murdoch, Warren Buffet, and other rich westerners doesn't exactly calm Iran's fears about being taken over by the west. I disagree with your statement. I think they are in self-preservation mode in Iran.
Yes, I think that is very wise move. This is good for west and excellent move for world.
Is it time to re-engage IRAN ? It is time to mind our own business and stop meddling in the affairs of other nations and avoiding entangling alliances. Sound familiar ?
I disagree. Neither sanction nor direct negotiation would work with Iran. The former does work because Iran has oil and the world depends on it. So the regime can always produce enough money to fuel its military machine. The latter doesn't work because the regime's credibility has been established on hostility with the US. So, what works then? It's simple: Iran has been taken hostage by a dictator and his hardline supporters, like Libya. The US should kill these handful of people an the people will take care of the rest.
Fareed is an idiot
>>Time to re-engage Iran
Only with a fire control computer.
this is exactly the kind of naive, clueless mantras that Iran banks on when it deals with the West. Even Obama realized after years that all his efforts to reach Iranian leaders have been rejected. That's why he gave up on them, genius. Because he was rebuffed at every turn. Meanwhile Iran continues to execute gays, political opponents, imprison and torture critics, and sponsor terrorism all over the world. And as it talks openly of destroying Israel, it is developing nuclear programs. So what is Fareed's answer to all this? Um... let's try to be nice to them again. Brilliant thinking...
First let our Congress fix our problems.
Mr. Obama has already made a mess of America. He should leave the rest of the world alone, and just keep riding around in his taxpayer-paid bus.
Fareak!
Most Idiots here are not even aware to the fact that Outside of Israel Iran has the Largest Jewish population in the Middle East,go read a book Idiots.
Zakaria is euphemizing and suggesting appeasement. That's no way to deal with aggression and terror. Bush and Obama have done the right thing in this case. Talk will be interpreted by the mullahs as a sign of weakness and will only embolden them further.
It is time for us to engage them alright. After 30 years of calling us the great Satan, talking smack, confronting us whenever they can, milking the Israeli Palestinian conflict to make us look terrible (also Israel's fault), and trying to get their hands on nuclear bombs – it's time we end this. Use the Iraq model, use the Lybia model, I don't care. Just as long as this time next year, that country's regime is history. Do it now!
How do you re-engage Iran when you don't know who is actually in charge?
As long as the government is overthrown, the regime is changed, into a more democratic party, they will not continue to have the same problems because it will be under a different ruling. I don't think the nuclear weapons issue will be that big of an issue as it is now, if there is a new government.
Fareed Zakaria is a globalist neocon who wants the US to go to war with Iran.
America's foreign policy is counter productive. We should re-engage with Iran.
Maria i want to jump your bones
Fareed is gay and a muslim traitor, he should be deported back to Iran where his friends are.
How about a lesson of appreciation for the rest of the world? No Internet, invented in the US. No twitter or Facebook, made in US. No Cars, invented in US. No air travel, invented in us. No power, Invented in the US. Since they hate us sooo much, we should take all the things we gave them that they take for granted for just one day and see how they do. No Phones, they were invented in the US. Need I go on?
The rest of the world does *not* care one bit for what you said. Let the USA stop playing by *stupid* rules that no one else uses, and start playing with WWII rules. Collateral damage? Maximize it !!! That's how wars are *won* !!!
Alphabet is invented in Iran, Agriculture invented in Iran, postal system invented in Iran, really need I ago?
Amir, we don't use the same alphabet you do. If these other items are true, they were invented or developed by your ancestors a long time ago. The real question is what have modern day Iranians invented that is of worth to this world. Hostage taking doesn't count.
Genius I talking about inventing writing system not a particular alphabet. All alphabets derived from the basic concept later. I has been done in Ilam which is a western province of Iran. Iranian also invented many other thing such as the wheel, windmill, medicine ,..... Please go and educate yourself. This comment is a response to none sense above. If we are not going to use automobile then you should not use alphabet! understood?
Yeah, time to engage them in a one sided tactical nuclear strike, they've been killing our soldiers for 10 years, not to mention some 1979 payback due.
Nuke Iran. Pull a Dreden with Qom and Tehran. and don't stop until they surrender.
I read a third of the comments. Far too many to be honest.
Here is some advice for all those commentators eager to spew random facts they heard from Limbaugh, Captain Planet or Big Bird:
Go to your local library, pick up a history book and read it (ANY history book will do).
Read another history book, from another author, publisher, country, etc.
Cross reference based on research.
If you want to spew (non)sense, have the b´lls to back it up with facts and do your homework.
Dear Fareed, I'm afraid your analysis is based on a normal model of a country and not the Islamic regime that rules Iran. So while 2+2 gets you 4 in a normal case, given this regime's make up and stance towards the United States, not only you will not get a 4, you might get an "apple".
This regime THRIVES on adversity from the west, especially USA. A very paranoid Khamenei is the real ruler and not the presidential puppets. All you will achieve by extending a hand to them is further legitimize them and their brutal oppression in their eyes and the eyes of their fundamentalist supporters.
This regime is BEYOND REFORM. They have proven this at every opportunity. USA wants to clear the nuclear issue, it ought to press for human rights and a subsequent democratic gov't.
USA wants to end Iran's interference and terrorist activities in the region, it ought to press for human rights and a democratic gov't.
USA wants to relieve the tensions between Iran and Israel, it ought o press for human rights and a subsequent democratic gov't.
Whatever that is necessary in that region hangs on ONE solution; a democratic Iran where the gov't is answerable to its people. Such a gov't will never take hostages, never will build the bomb, will never interfere with other countries, will never support terrorism, will never want destruction of Israel or any other nation, ... and most importantly, will be a great ally to the west and the US, far more dependable and trust worthy than the Arab countries.
The president of Iran has expressed a willingness to open a new dialouge with the US, but since he is only a figurehead in a theocratic society, it really doesn't matter what he wants. The aytollahs are the power behind the throne so to speak, and as long as they have the support of the revolutinaty gaurd, there will never room for the US.
I have a problem with people that follow somebody because the majority are. I was taught at a young age how to form my own opinion whether it is the norm or not. It is sad when absent Obama can use his knowledge of history to deceive the nation. I am referring to his "Jobs Plan". He acts as though it is his own idea, but it is not. The Jobs plan is the recreation of 1930's WPA. That was when the people were unemployed and the nation needed something as they stood in bread lines. The workers back then repaired/built schools and bridges. My grandfather was one of those. And then World War Two broke out. Even back then the WPA/Jobs Plan did not work.
I disturbs me when we have a "president" who walks away from Congress because he wants things way. He acts as if he is the world's messiah. He keeps changing his mind on things. I hear on the news how he gave money to the Hamas right after he was sworn in on the Koran. This spring he told Israel to cede land that was acquired after 1967. Now he says he is against Palestine and the want for state hood. I remember when he had Clinton tell Iran they could not have nuclear power. Now I see how he wants to deal with Iran. He must sit in front of his DVD player and TV to help him remember what he had just said. This person has caused the world to hate us. It is all because he wants power at our expense.
Probably a good idea. The sanctions just make the population hate us, and support the government as long as it presents itself as fighting the evil Americans. In addition, so long as we keep the standard of living low, the people are unlikely to move on to post-materialist values such as rights, democracy, and freedom. They'll stay subservient because it's the only way to guarantee their daily loaf of bread. The sanctions are worthless. Finally, one of the reasons for the collapse of the USSR was the sudden flooding of information and products from the west, which disillusioned people about the Communist system. If we open up trade and negotiate, we have a far better chance of getting them on our side and inspiring change in the nation then if we keep them isolated and hateful.
I totally agree. INFORMATION and free access to it is the most important and crucial issues we face in Iran. As long as the regime has control of the airways, it dictates the trend in thoughts and opinion among the less educated masses. But once these masses discover the atrocities and brutalities the regime has committed in the name of Islam, they will turn their backs to it and will rise up.
As for sanctions, instead of allowing the regime to transfer the pressures of sanction onto the people, there should be those actions that target the regime and IRGC DIRECTLY.
1- Block their assets, not only in the west, but also in TURKEY, INDIA, MALAYSIA, UAE, SOUTH AFRICA, CANADA, ...
2- Refuse to issue any sort of visas TO THEM OR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. Whereas places like Canada are allowing these family members to come in and get citizenship with least bit of effort!
3- Put severe sanctions on the Central bank.
4- and the absolute MOST IMPORTANT item of all, stop buying oil from Iran. You take away the money (from sale of oil) from the regime and within months it will capitulate and crumble.
But will Obama or the west dare try this?
Enough with half-hearted measures that lead nowhere.
We shouldn't do aything that bestows any type of legitimacy on the Iranian regime. Talks are a waste of time. What have we ever accomplished by talking to that obsessively obnoxious anti-American regime? They aren't serious about talking they never have been. It's incredibly naive to think we can talk to a regime who was founded on anti-Americanism and whose first act was to take Americans hostage. They haven't changed one bit.
A backward culture, Iran, and a backward regime, the Islamic Republic, go together. Iranians you wanted Khomeini and this nightmare so enjoy.
I hope our governments and our people have the ability to this in strategic way as you have done, Each party has tried to have a little hand in the Middle East, have it own objective to achieve there religion expectations, in lieu of other nation , no body care how many people to kill , just have one eye .so we have to release our self from those ideas that will destroy the world.
A neural view point after many years of analysis what have happened in the world ,IT is Israel , focusing in there religion we can conclude that they believe that there are the nation of the GOD , how come..!!! God doesn't accept killing others in order to satisfy him self , and why Israel in the nation on the GOD, they have huge terrorism practice to accomplish their Beliefs, So it is better for us to solve the Problem's Root , not the results and conclusions
For people Accusing Islam as killing and destroy custodian ,Please read about the Islam fro trusted sources and then Judge. very few people in Islamic world applying Islam teachings. and the media is the reason behind the Disfigured picture of Islam .
Last but not least , out in your mind that policy and politician is the art of lie , So don't be Stone Chess in their ground or as blinded solder in their Battlefield.
Mr Zakaria, as much as I like to read your ideas, this one I don't agree with. First of all, by reaching to Iran we would legitimize many of their absurd idiologies towards us and we would send a message that we are willing to put up with their deceptive tactics. Second, Talks would go nowhere with a governement that cannot be trusted. In the end, what the US needs to do is what we are doing. IGNORE them until their own population wakes up and decides to overthrow them. What we need to do is use the United Nations and the world bodies already in place to deal with it. The right time to reach out will come when a new president is elected, but not before then because this current one has shown unwillingness to look at us with anything other than contempt and hate. Ahmadinejad is an idiot who deserves no credit for being the one who made America come to plead with him...we have more pride than that. What we do need is to free ourselves from our oil addicition and then we really won't need to reach out at all.
There's another issue that our hawkish comment-posters are forgetting about!
If we believe that a military strike is the solution, then have you ever wondered why after more than 30 years of bikkering, we have not stirked Iran yet? Why haven't we? What are we afraid of?
I tell you what we're afraid, the uncertainty of the aftermath!
We don't know how they're going to react, that means we afraid of how they may react!
Don't you think that the military planners, generals, & the Mullahs in Iran know that by now?
We're playing a kind of a poker game that our oponent can see the cards we hold! Our strategy hasn't work thus far.
We need a new strategy. & if you'd say bomb them, then I say what are you waiting for after 30 years?
I agree with all of your points. I would love to see the US re-engage Iran. I think its the US that needs to be the "bigger man" by coming to the table first.
But, Obama can't forget how politically unpopular diplomacy can be in the current environment. There may be progress to be made, but Obama would probably be better off waiting until after the election cycle. As a 2nd term President, he can worry more about his legacy and less about being re-elected.
American policy with Iran may be stuck in a time warp, but certainly the behavior of Iran's leadership is stuck in a time warp circa 7th century.
" Obama should return to his original approach and test the Iranians to see if there is any room for dialogue and agreement. Engaging with Iran, putting its nuclear program under some kind of supervision and finding areas of common interest (such as Afghanistan) would all be important goals." This is a great idea . Obama administration 's earlier intelligence estimates of talking to enemies' and adversaries' , at a conference table was over ambitious . That supposedly was a very unorthodox approach , in foreign policy 's strategic frame work , at that time . Iran has also learned , after hard and bloody internal infightings . That if Iran believes what says publicly , that it does not have real regional and international strategic interest , in a nuclear weapons program . Iran would find an opportunity for a real deal to have a purposeful negotiations , with the U. S. and the West . This is about high time for the U. S. and NATO , strategic planners to find partners and explore a non traditional approach in Afghanistan 's war on terrorism . The U. S . is now interested , not in escalation of the war on terrorism in Afghanistan , rather in rigorous efforts for : a) peaceful transition of Afghanistan 's security , and b) help in bringing our troops home from Afghanistan . The U. S. should consider that it is almost about time to include Iran and others , in a regional cooperation framework . The new initiatives and incentives should include Soviets , China, India and Iran in strategy for a peaceful transition of Afghanistan 's security , through Obama administration 's another critical and intensive review of Af – Pak strategy .
Fareed stated that Obama at first tried the peacefull dialog with the Iranian Government, but now has changed his policies to the same as the George Bush. He does not mention that Obama even kept silent and did not provide any support to mass opposition against the Islamic Regime (IRI) not to lose his chances for a hopefull dialog. The fact is despite all the limited sanctions ( does not include huge oil deals with many countries) The US and European governments are still trying to negotiate with the IRI, but the fact is that IRI is composed of various factions( it is a clerical regime with many power centers) and 2nd, what ever agreed on has no value. The European counties tried the critical dialog approach in 1998-1991, and nothing was achieved. You need to get into the mind set of theocratic rulers of Iran, they see the other side not as peacefull messenger but represenattive of Devil and corrupt powers, and negotiating is only a game to hide their real aims. Having full control of the oil revenue gives this oligarchic group to arm themselves to the teeth, and pay for all the hooligans to crush the opposition. The nucleous of this regime consist of Shiite clergy that support religious dictatorship, armed miltia (pasdarn) that control all the illicit trades, and a very wealthy group of bazari mechants. Basically 0.1% of the population control more than 80% of the economy. Sanctions are effective because the islamic oligarchy is hurting, and people are raising their voices against the extreme corruption and monopoly of power.
Great article! I couldn't have said it better myself. This continual punishment of sanctions will only make them further act out. Their culture demands that they not be bullied or belittled. I am afraid it will only make things worse. Instead of fighting with them we need to get to know them and try to establish a relationship with them to avoid any further conflict. I have it on good report the middle eastern countries are tired of the wars always being on their turf. If there are anymore battles they say they will be fought on our land. Meaning, if we bomb them they will not fight there they will bomb us back. We need leadership that is smarter than the predecessors. We need leaders that are willing to roll up their sleeves and negotiate with out being bought out by the Israel lobbyists. We need leaders that are willing to come to terms with what the truth of all of this really is.
We have an extremely critical situation here.
Do people really envy current american 24/7 campaign based political system over Iran's political system? You don't think American political system turned into a joke. Advisers of politicians always say everything is great to raise cash even if their politicians sucks or policy suck. Do people really envy a system where there is zero accountability?
what else did you learn man? can you tell me about human rights a bit and how this could come in to your mind just a quick pictures and then again Ahmadi nejad ? are you the new superman for US policy ? congratulations, but Iranians think exactly on reverse of your side to this story ,,open your eyes , Bush was more successful in controlling this regime
I agree with you
"Iran is a country of 80 million people, educated and dynamic. It sits astride a crucial part of the world. It cannot be sanctioned and pressed down forever."
That's why Iranian people seeking regime change. Iranians deserve better than the mullahs.
Fareed,
you are surrounded by Iranian lobbyist for too long. You are out of touch with the Iranian people.
Ali
and you are literally drowned in propaganda.
and you are A genius like Fareed that ends up the story like Hollywood
I do not believe that the Iranian government is any more willng to negotiate a reasonable agreement any more than Adolf Hitler was.
very racist comment. Mr. rosenberg if I'd made a similar statement about Israel you'd accuse me of being xenophobic.
so true
I agree 100%. Iran's leadership = Hitler.
He is honest and well intended in his article but I think he misses an important point: Iranian internal rhetoric is based on ideological confrontation with the U.S.A. and the western world, because –apart from the obvious- it’s useful to diffuse internal problems. You put the blame outside and therefore you don’t have to ponder about what’s wrong inside. Corruption is big in Iran. Not big, huge. Obviously, sanctioning the country only makes it easier for the policymakers to disguise the corruption and the big scandals that plague the country. Imagine if you take away that big token of an excuse about every problem inside the country. That would be unbearable. But there is no danger of that, as once you are raised to resort to xenophobia every time you have a problem it’s very difficult to lose that trait.
@Fareed Zakaria USA is doing the same thing, weaken the civilian society and strengthening the Military and the Military is controlled by the few ELITE Family's...
This article(talk) is pure trash ya! after the Washington bombing plot what else we need to know? they killed over 130,000. of their Owen people. they (Iran's roller) are terrorist do we have to wait until they bomb the Capital hill? and they reach to NUC bomb?.I hope not.
you change 180 Fareed (power of oil $$)!!!!!!
when a sane and an academic brain gives a logical advised to the US to in some way engage with Iran in a meaningful dialogue, war mongers in the US oppose it. This will be the only solution to the Iranian nuclear program b/c it will give the US a leeway to monitor it. Why do some of you think only of violence, violence, violence. If you are honest and objective, you will certainly accept that Iran also to some extend have convincing and legitimate claims against the US. Maybe you are unaware of the declining US popularity in the world due to their lies in starting some wars that we all know. The US is not perfect. It has its own blames for the many wars and killings in the world. If you want the US to fight another war, they will not have any allies this time. But the US MUST KNOW THAT IRAN WILL BE MOTIVATED TO PRODUCE WMD IF THEY CONTINUOUSLY FEEL THREATENED BY STATES THAT HAVE THEM. And honestly they will have a logic for this.
Obama doesn't adopt a more intelligent policy than Bush because Obama doesn't have enough strength to counter the US war mongers. He is too weak at present.
Lets see if he wins a second term. There may be a bunch of things he is becomes strong enough to do.
Did you take this from Ron Paul? It sounds very familiar with his views. I think you should perhaps bring that up some time. Perhaps it is a sin to do so on TV though?
I agree with the blog. We need a president who wants to be a leader and have a diplomatic foreign policy and not one dictated by drones and sanctions. Ron Paul is the only candidate for president who wants to be commander in chief and not have the military industrial complex and the military running our foreign policies and about a third of the budget.
II just think Iran is bad luck 12 months away from a Presidential election. Ask Jimmy Carter.
I think America has done enough in that region. Remember the Pahlavi period, backed up by the USA? We all know how that ended. How about after the Pahlavi period, when the USA backed Iraq up? We all know how that ended. USA: Stop trying to police the world with your coporate capitalism. It tends to backfire ...
We have to watch Iran because they dream of the greater Iran that extends from the Euphrates river to the river of the Nile
They are building settlements every day on confiscated Palestinians land.
You must be joking. now becase of gaining more power by revelutionery guard and becoming even more brutal, you suggesting more softly approch by USA? for what? more terrorst activity, more suppression of Iranian poeple, an atomic bomb made by Iran...what else?
We will never be able to make friends/negotiate with Iran. Their government hates the west, they want to wipe Israel & the USA off the map. That's why they are making nuclear weapons. Their leader "I'm a nut-job" said it himself. Why is the USA sitting back, allowing them to get a nuke? Didn't Hitler also get away with mass murder? History repeats itself. Wait & see.
Read, educate yourself, learn something before you open your. Nobody's anxious to read your stupid opinion.
READ! EDUCATE YOURSELF DUMBY!
Iran as he mentioned has young educated generation ready for making change, Iran is not similar with many arab world countries, Iran has people who want change, who want democracy and who want engagement with people around the world. opnening negotiation, decreasing sanctions and sitting and talking wth Iranians can solve all the problems. Iranian people are not after Islamic regime, the are after their own cultural values. treat Iran different from Islamic countries.
Would Zakaria prefer bombs and more bombs, to pressure and more pressure?
Dear Fareed. Look, lets be realistic! This regime has proved it self as a brutal regime both to Iranian people and any pro-freedom person anywhere in the world. The supreme leader of Iran knows very well that this regime is no longer supported by a majority of Iranian people, So the only thing he can do to remain in power is to resort revolutionary guard more and more everyday, and let them plunder oil revenues. Therefor, the oil revenues are so crucial for this regime. Without that money this regime is doomed to topple! So, I think sanctions are effective, although they might take a long time!
Fareed Zacharia, as expected from all good Muslim, tries again to sell us his 'brothers in Muhammad' – Islamic extremists, terrorists and their God cursed cohorts. Maybe it is times for CNN to let Zacharia go and hire in his stead a true American rather than a facsimile thereof to comment, in a fair and balanced manner, on international events, especially where Muslims, our sworn enemies, are involved.
As far as Iran is concerned, the only way to engage those demented Islamists is from about 30,000 feet up, courtesy of USAF (United States Air Force). A virulent anti-Western nation that gratuitously promises to wipe Israel off the map, Iran still casts one vote at the UN General Assembly – a decadent organization that is sliding down an identical appeasement chute as the old League of Nations did, just prior to WW2.
What our great American Fareed Zacharia recommends is to covertly embrace the Ayatollahs gang of criminals, in the hope that we might succeed convincing them not to strike at us, as soon as their bomb is ready. Typical!
Actually, we should start a Manhattan Project 2 to achieve total and absolute energy independence from Arab countries and then never again get mixed in the affairs of Muslim nations in the hope of selling them "democracy" and thus bring them from the 7th to the 21st Century on a 'magic carpet', similar to the one previously used by Ali Baba and his 40 (or was it 400 million?) confreres.
All this, to wonder out loud why CNN lost so much audience in favor of Fox news.
Jayson.
Bla blah blau... yada.....yara.....yada...............
You're an idiot!
it is obvious from Mr. Zakaria's personal visit and personal experiencing the facts on the grounds. He visited Iran and as a journalist, I'm sure, he met independently many Iranians on the streets or in some educational insitutions such as Iranian Universities etc. He came back with a totally renewed and definitely with a practical and realistic approach to the situation we are facing with the criminal power brokers like the NeoCons who only see Iran with Israel's point of view. Why we Americans don't give peace a chance and take the advise of our predecessors who have strongly opposed the favoritism for any nation. We have destroyed America's face in the Muslim world already and rest of the Christian world is aginst us as well with the exception of the crooked government leaders of the same countries whose population is against their country's leaders who are acting like the poodle Blair and the rest. Give diplomacy a chance and certainly not the diplomacy that is designed by the NeoCons and specially the Israelis. Let us think of American interest first and not Israel's. It's time we all come to senses and realize what kind of a price we have paid so far for Israel's security.
Well said David. It is time that the US considered its interests first. Clearly, Netanyahu will not agree to any deal with the US Government and this is affecting the image of the US in the Muslim World
The author wonders why Obama's polices have been near identical to Bush's. The REALPOLITIK tends to do that. It is great to be on the sideline and bash someone else's policies like this author does. There cannot be any diagloe of significance if there is nothing in common. Those who run Iran view us as the enemy. They view our secular, democratic society as absolute evil. They violently suppress those who want Democratic change, those who are ethinic, and religious minorities, they support like minded countries, and lastly they use Israel as a symbol to unite those who do believe in violence.
The author believes that if we initiate some kind of detente, the regular people will just somehow rise up and brush the Mullah's and their revolutionary guards asside. So what kind of consessions would the author tolerate? And Democratic president would immedietly lose rellection as the Jewish vote would evaportate. Would the author allow Iran to complete a nuclear device and then pursue a means of launching it? Would the author be willing to turn a blind eye if Iran pursued militiary adventures or continued to futher it's agenda through it's proxies?
Israel & AIPAC are 2 of the biggest obstcles in the way of correcting & advancing our foreign policy in the ME. We'll do so much better without them!
Yeeeaah, Im with Ron Paul in regards to Iran. His policies actually make sense when you stop and think about it for longer than a minute.
Thank you Fareed for this nice piece, I agree that US should engage Iran in a dialogue and extend an olive branch. Obviously some of the responders are either short-sighted or ignorant of what is happening around the globe. Most of us are fed with one-sided stories that we fail to think deep on global issues thus making us biased . How many people have been brutalized and arrested in "Occupy Wall Street" all over the United States, many of us turn our faces on the other side. If this type of police brutality and senseless arrests happen in Iran, many of you would have castigated and condemn Iranian goverment and call them names. This is all about double standard. Don't rely only on the biased & one-sided news you're being fed, please treat global issues with open mind, conduct researches to nourish your intellictual abilities.
Exactly, why no one blame Israel/Pakistan/India ... of having nukes but Iran even could not have civilian nuclear tech? (There is no evidence for weapons so far) As long double standards ruling the world we never see a real engagement
I guess Fareed is now repaying Iran for the favor or granting his career-burnishing interview opportunity with Iran's repressive president by writing an opinion favoring a less punitive approach to Iran. Hello, what planet are you on Zareed? Iran has based its whole regime's domestic and foreign policy and raison d'etre upon its uncompromising and unrelenting viceral hatred of the US. "Death to America" chants are still done daily at Teheran Univerisity prayers. It's a pointless approach since it paints the entire Iranian nation into a inescapable corner. But useful and beneficial progress and happy let's all be friends endings are not what the mullahs want. They want angry, negative, hateful, revengeful, possibly violent and nihilistic endings. Their whole political excuse for power has been built on this. Make nicey-nice with the USof A would just wipe out their whole excuse for a repressive regime and open the doors to that most unthinkable of things, western cultural and ecomomic influence. Of course, nobody actually asks the Iranian people what they want...that's what is really needed!
I am one of the good Mullas. The rest are terrible. I for one agree to get rid of fanatic regimes and authoritarian power by unmanned aircraft period.
I am also a good mullah, note my name
The last Iranian election was by all accounts a sham. When the good educated people of Iran took to the street to protest, they were killed. So yes, I think something should be done with the islamic theocracy that rules Iran as a dictatorship. The best hope for Iran is the huge percentage of population that is under the age of 30 and desire freedom, democracy, and for the clerics to stay in the mosques where they belong.
Just think. When the republicans are elected back into power, they can start a war with Iran (totally unfunded of course). Then we could use Iran's oil to pay for the war. And when the war is over, Iran will sell us cheap oil! Just like in Iraq!............Oh wait.........Never mind.
How about we load $40 billion on some pallets and ship them to Iran? You know.....the Bush/Cheney plan.
Equating Obama's foreign policy to Bush era and then concluding re-engagement approach to one of the most untrustworthy, unpopular and murderous regimes of our era from Fareed Zakeria was shocking. It is bad enough for Fareed to give the outrageous liars of Iran center stage, its is bad enough that they get the same treatment from the US press when visiting US but our journalists or UNHCR are not allowed in to observe events in Iran but now to tow the line these murderers have been promoting and disguise it as a legitimate foreign policy advice is absurd. I did not expect this from the usually thoughtful Zakeria. What a shame!
An opinion:
ANYONE who thinks their country and/or govt are the "good" guys,
that person is a true idiot and need to get his/her head out of his/her a*s*s*
what ever is coming out of fariba mouth is the language of what media provide them sooo dont pay no mind to her
u know
ronning i know one thing what ever the form of gov democ dictatorship or communisam if they serve the people and people on street have jobs becuase of policies of that gov and performance i support that a very intelligent person said that what ever the form of gov it is as long as it serve people i am with it
i dont even pay no mind to media u know media is a becoming propogada machine now sooo i go home sleep watch tv come to make money for my stomach and family thats it
as far as fareed is concern he is a pupit of media so he get paid to talk so he is making money for his name and his channel name it is not his fault i know he is getting paid to talk any way so pay no mind to him
The masters of the US, AIPAC, will not allow it. It's a dead issue.
Well said Fareed.......ur genius.
One question:
Do you think anyone here would even give a damn if Iran did not have oil?
One will people learn that all is not what it seems...
Iran is the best thing to support US's arms exports. Do you think anyone [across the gulf] would buy $60B worth of arms if they were a "friend"?
sorry I meant: WHEN will people learn...
FZ:
You are naiive
Ahmadinejad is a nobody... nothing but a mouthpiece. He has NO POWER nor can he make any decisions. When will the press here realize this and stop ligitimtizing this "anomaly" by giving him a platform from which to spew his oral diarrhea?
Dont waste your time.
The regime in Iran will never engage the US because the minute they do they will lose the reason to exist.
And... The US will never "engage" this regime because it is the bad guy in the neighborhood the US needs in order make the Arabs paranoid so they will buy our weapons.
I think the somewhat obvious mistake most people that advocate for reconciliation with the current Iranian regime make is incorrectly assuming that their government thinks like their people. Even though the average Iranian (at least in the cities) is well educated and rational, their president continues to do things like deny the Holocaust and claim that 9/11 was a US/Zionist conspiracy. Those are not the comments of a rational person that can be persuaded by reason and common sense. Maybe if the US showed some support for the Iranian people naively thinking that democracy could work there in the last election we would have a different set of facts on the ground.
Also, for all you anti-semites saying that AIPAC and the evil jews run the media and control the US... jews are just a tiny fraction of the population and it just might be the case that the views supported by AIPAC are also agreed with by others in the American population. The fact that you think it is more likely that there is some secret group of jews running the country and the media than the possibility that not everyone agrees with your small minded perspective is laughable. How about showing solidarity with the one country in the region where there is no discrimination based on religion, gender, etc. rather than yet another regime that oppresses the rights of minorities. Novel concept, I know.
Dude, I just read an article about hoe young girls are killed or named "unwanted" and India. When will you report on this issue. We have all read a lot of propaganda about middle east and now it's time to get real and talk about some facts about so called democracies in the world.
Mr. Zakaria,
With due respect, I think your view on the Iranian regime is absolutely naive.
It is so obvious to most Iranians that the regime continues its hostility toward the U.S because it can prolong its life and blame their own weakness and shortcomings on the U.S. If you are suggesting of getting close to Iranian regime would cause the promotion of civil society (which I agree), then it would make me wonder, why the mullahs in Iran want to do that?
On the nuclear issue, I think the problem is not the nuclear program, it is about an irresponsible regime that can't be trussed by Iranians and the rest of the world.
By the way I remember when George Bush administration was planning for a troops surge in Iraq, you wrote an article in Newsweek that the surge wouldn't work and the U.S. should instead protect the Kurdistan region from falling apart!
Regards
Keyvan
Fareed, finally someone speaking about muslims coming into the Western World with an eye for cooperation and not trying to destroy everyone that doesn't agree with us. We need level headed thinking and an agreement to disagree. You, sir, seem to have a powerful voice and I hope you can influence the outcome of these touchy issues. Blessed are the peacemakers.
lol
I normally find Fareed's comments to be bang-on, but he's out to lunch on this one. The sooner Ahmadinejad is gone, the better. If and when the Iranians take their country back, the U.S. and the rest of the civilized world can then engage them on the world stage. Right now they have no legitimate standing among free nations . . .
Engage them how? With bombs? Since 1979 that is the only language they understand.
A very good point , Fareed. Unfortunately, in spite of being broke , we continue to warmonger so that the 1% can profit from wars. We like kings and despots better that sing our tune.
By the way, a very good interview with the president of Iran.
Fareed Zakaria is manipulative and dishonest. He has an agenda which is strongly influenced by Iranian and Pakistani interests. Please don't trust his articles. His type of propaganda is dangerous. Iran is a threat to peace and stability throughout the world. The musIim dictators and defacto dictators in that region are just as dangerous as the musIim extremists and terrorists. We cannot give in and allow these US to do business with them as if they are a democratic European country. Obama has taken the right path in squeezing Iran. Short of direct strikes, there is no other course of action that will eliminate the Iranian threat. Zakaria should be ashamed of himself. He has the luxury of living in a civilized country yet he fights for Pakistan and Iran. If his children were living in either of those countries, he would not be writing such articles.
I agree with you Bob. As a Mullah I live in one of these countries but fully agree with you.
DR. ARAB IDIOT IS BACK!
YOU'RE NO MULLAH, YOU'RE A DAMNED ARAB!
A DOCTOR, REMEMBER YOU MORON!
totally agree with Mr. Zakaria ... if we had only been engaging Iran and not been confrontational ... the Iranian leadership wouldn't want to wipe Israel off the map, or believe in the Caliphate, or be suppressing its own people, or supporting Hamas and Hezbollah. Because their true nature and beliefs are to be gentle kind and hospitable to all people ... they are just forced to do things against their own strongly held convictions.
I totally disagree with you Clark1b. I am a Mullah and you should respect my opinions. Fareed is not right on this issue.
Iran should become the last state of the United States because I prefer to join a free loving country.
DR. Idiot,
you're suffering from multiple personality disorder! Get some help.

YIRANIANS ARE EVIL, eah, but they are not the ones in charge! It's thier governement you need to be worried about. They have already said they want to erase Israel from the face of the earth and the USA isn't their number 3 choice.
Heaven help us all if they ever end up with THE BOMB! In my opinion they would not hesitate to use it as they have threathened to do so. When someone makes a threat like that, you better believe him.
I think we need to be very careful when dealing with the goverenment of Iran. I think he speaks out of both sides of his mouth.
If the Prophet Muhammad chose Aisha to be his closest wife and he loved her more than any other human being – don't you think that you would be questioning his judgement by saying she is a bad woman? And that would mean you are questioning Allah SWT's judgement in choosing Muhammad PBUH as a prophet.. do you see what I mean? Allah chose Muhammad as the greatest prophet, and Muhammad chose Aisha as his closest wife. For you to insult her is to insult Muhammad, and for you to insult Muhammad is to insult Allah

(CBS) This is what deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage had in mind a few months ago when he pinned this label on Hezbollah.
"Hezbollah may be the 'A-Team of Terrorists' and maybe al-Qaeda is actually the 'B' team. And they're on the list and their time will come," says Armitage. "There is no question about it – it's all in good time. And we're going to go after these problems just like a high school wrestler goes after a match. We're going to take them down one at a time."
What he's talking about started about two decades ago as a ragtag militia group fighting the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. But there's no longer anything ragtag about Hezbollah now, Correspondent Ed Bradley reports.
The Islamic government of Iran reportedly subsidizes Hezbollah to the tune of $100 million a year, providing its several thousand well-trained fighters with sophisticated weapons systems. Iran also sends advisors, and according to U.S. intelligence, issues its marching orders.
Sen. Bob Graham, the Florida democrat who chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee in the last Congress, and is now running for president, says the Bush Administration should be more concerned with Hezbollah than they are with Saddam Hussein.
"Does Saddam Hussein or Hezbollah represent the greater threat to the United States," asks Graham. "In my opinion, there's no question that Hezbollah is that greater threat, and yes, we should go after it first and go after it before we go to war with Iraq."
Graham says Hezbollah has a global network of radical Islamic supporters, with enough operatives in the U.S. to pose a terrorist threat here.
"It has a significant presence of its trained operatives inside the United States waiting for the call to action," says Graham.
But if we were to know that classified information, would we be more concerned? Would we be more afraid of Hezbollah than we are today?
"Well, I'm more concerned and more afraid than if I did not know what the scale of their presence was in the United States," says Graham, without any hesitation.
"They are a violent terrorist group. And they have demonstrated throughout their now 25-year history a hatred of the United States and a willingness to kill our people."
Senator Graham is referring to the 1983 truck bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon, which resulted in the death of 241 U.S. Marines. Hezbollah's supporters say that attack was a response to shelling by U.S. warships of Islamic factions in the Lebanese civil war. The U.S. called it terrorism.
But Hezbollah's leader, Sheikh Hasan Nasrallah, who we met in Beirut, insists that his group no longer poses a threat to the U.S. Unlike the leadership of al-Qaeda, he isn't hiding from anyone. You may never have heard of Nasrallah before, but he is a hugely popular figure, not just in the region but also among Arabs living in the West
" I believe the Americans are just saying what the Israelis want them to say. I consider this to be an Israeli accusation coming out of an American mouth and nothing more," says Nasrallah.
When he became its leader ten years ago, Nasrallah turned Hezbollah into a formidable fighting force. Few people know more about him than journalist Nick Blanford, who has covered Lebanon for eight years and is now writing a book about Hezbollah and Sheikh Nasrallah.
"People adore him. I mean, I talked to some Hezbollah fighters that speak of him almost as they would a wife or a mother," says Blanford. "They think of him before they go to sleep at night, that he's always in their thoughts, so he has this tremendous power over the rank and file."
The militant Islamic group has enough power and trained skilled commandos who are specialized in attacking Israeli forces that have occupied southern Lebanon for 22 years. Their most effective weapon: remote-controlled roadside bombs that were detonated when Israeli patrols passed by - as in the 1983 attack in southern Lebanon.
All told, Israel lost more than 900 soldiers in Lebanon. In May 2000, the Israeli Army withdrew.
What did Israel's withdrawal do for Hezbollah in the eyes of the Arab world?
"Well, there's enormous boost for Hezbollah," says Blanford. "I mean, this was a small Arab organization that had defeated the mightiest military force the Middle East has ever seen."
With the Israelis out of Lebanon, Nasrallah encouraged, and assisted, the Palestinian uprising against Israel. He has acknowledged sending secret agents carrying weapons to the West Bank, where he is considered a hero. Some kids in the Gaza Strip even dress like him, down to the beard and the glasses. At one event, a boy playing Nasrallah was flanked by one child who played a security guard, and another child dressed as a suicide bomber.
In Lebanon, where Hezbollah runs a network of schools and hospitals and participates in local elections, Nasrallah, a Muslim, is a hero even to the country's Christian President, Emile Lahoud.
"For us Lebanese, and I can tell you a majority of Lebanese, Hezbollah is a national resistance movement," says Lahoud. "If it wasn't for them, we couldn't have liberated our land. And because of that, we have big esteem for the Hezbollah movement."
President Lahoud has such high esteem for Hezbollah, he's ceded control of the border with Israel to them - a border where Hezbollah and Israeli soldiers now confront each other just a few yards apart.
This side is controlled by Hezbollah. The other side is controlled by Israel. Hezbollah has already fired rockets across the border, and U.S. officials believe that in the past two years they've been stockpiling rockets in this area hidden in caves and underground bunkers - higher quality Iranian rockets that could reach Haifa about fifty miles away.
Openly calling for terrorism against Israel, Nasrallah is also urging on suicide operations.
"In Palestine, these operations are the only way to root out the Zionists," says Nasrallah during a speech.
That's the kind of material Hezbollah broadcasts daily on its own television station, Al Manar, which reaches a worldwide audience by satellite. Because of Washington's support for Israel, Hezbollah is conducting a ferocious propaganda offensive against the United States.
This propaganda message broadcast on Al Manar portrays U.S. foreign policy as Satanic and shows an image of the Statue of Liberty, a skull for her face, wearing a gown dripping with the blood of other nations.
BAGHDAD
An anti-American cleric is urging his followers to stop attacking U.S. troops in Iraq so that their withdrawal from the country isn't slowed down, a call meant to ramp up pressure on Baghdad's political leaders who are considering asking some American forces to stay.

Attacks on US forces still an option, says Muqtada al-Sadr upon return to Iraq Sadr followers send message to US: Don't try to stay Iraqi Shiite cleric supports al-Maliki to head up new government Topics
War and Conflict Government and Politics Politics Middle East Politics World Politics Iraqi Politics Iraq War In a statement posted on his website, Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr told his militias to halt attacks against U.S. forces till the withdrawal is finished at the end of the year as required under a security agreement between Washington and Baghdad.
"Out of my desire to complete Iraq's independence and to finish the withdrawal of the occupation forces from our holy lands, I am obliged to halt military operations of the honest Iraqi resistance until the withdrawal of the occupation forces is complete," al-Sadr said in the statement, posted late Saturday. Sadrist lawmaker Mushraq Naji confirmed the statement on Sunday.
Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.
However, al-Sadr warned that "if the withdrawal doesn't happen ... the military operations will be resumed in a new and tougher way."
The statement followed last week's notice by U.S. officials in Baghdad, announcing the start of the withdrawal.
There are currently about 45,000 U.S. forces in Iraq.
However, U.S. and Iraqi leaders are currently weighing whether some American troops should remain past the Dec. 31 deadline as Baghdad continues to struggle with instability and burgeoning influence from neighboring Iran. Last month, Iraqi leaders began negotiating with U.S. officials in Baghdad to keep at least several thousand troops in Iraq to continue training the nation's shaky security forces.
Officials in Washington say President Barack Obama is willing to keep between 3,000 and 10,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. But with fewer than four months before the final deadline, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and parliament still have not indicated how many U.S. troops Iraq might need, how long they would stay, or exactly what they would be doing.
After more than eight years of war, many weary Iraqis are ready to see U.S. troops go, and staunchly defend their national sovereignty against an American force they see as occupiers. Al-Sadr's followers vehemently oppose a continued U.S. military presence in Iraq, and walked out of last month's meeting where political leaders decided to open the talks on having American troops stay.
"Our goal has been always to fight the occupiers because they are still in our country," Naji said Sunday.
Still, other Iraqi officials privately say they want American troops to continue training the nation's security forces for months, if not years, to come. The president of Iraq's northern Kurdish region this week pleaded for U.S. forces to stay to ward off threats of renewed sectarian violence.
Many Iraqis — both Sunnis and Shiites — share that fear.
"As for me, and the sheiks of Nasiriyah, we want the U.S. Army to stay," Sheik Manshad al-Ghezi of the southern Shiite city of Nasiriyah said in a recent interview. "We are afraid of civil war. All the parties and groups in Iraq are armed and the Iraqi Army cannot manage to bring security to Iraq and stop the fighting among these parties."
In another statement posted Sunday, a Shiite militia controlled by Iran jeered calls for U.S. troops to stay. The group ridiculed a warning last week by Kurdish regional President Massoud Barzani that raised the specter of civil war if American forces leave Iraq. Kurds have long depended on U.S. troops to protect them, going back to Saddam Hussein's rule.
"When the (U.S.) occupation gets out of the country with his agents, the Iraqi nation will be unified," an unidentified leader for Kataib Hezbollah, which operates in Iraq, wrote on the militia's website. "Whoever calls for keeping the occupation is linking his destiny with the occupation and has sold himself as cheap, and he should leave the country with his masters."
Violence has dropped dramatically across Iraq from just a few years ago, but deadly bombings and shootings still happen every day.
Late Sunday, police said a roadside bomb targeting a security patrol killed a passer-by and two police in Baghdad's eastern Shiite Shamaayah area. Three more police were among eight others who were wounded, officials said.
The casualties were confirmed by a medic at Imam Ali hospital. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
In the mid-seventies I spent a month in Iran. The people, including the females, were mostly educated and pleasant even though a majority had been literally brought forth from the bronze age in the preceding forty years.
I remain amazed that the Ayatollahs have been able to keep the lid on all those educated women all these years, but they are not yet dead. The problem is not Iran, but it's theocracy AND the current President.
Yes, "if the regime changed, the nuclear energy program – which is popular as an expression of Iranian nationalism and power – will continue". But an Iran with nuclear electrical generation is not a threat to the word.
It is the Iran under current leadership that has a "hidden agenda" that will be the match in the tinderbox that is the middle east if it gets nuclear weapons capability because these people will either use it or share it with those who will.
There is no point in talking too those who will not listen; but that does not give us the luxury of ignoring what they are doing either. Trust, but verify.
Mr Fareed, you know nothing about Iran. Please take time and read the history of Iran. You should apologize from all Iranians especially women. Are you really journalist?????????????????
To Fareed Islamic Theocracy can be a partner. I guess he sees Saudia Arabia as such. However, these cultures are extremely anti american and it is a pipe dream to think they would not use the first opportunity to enhialate us.
Iran would be better than Da Zionist Jooz who do nothing but cost America a couple of Billion in Welfare and cause America and its people to be hated around the world and drag us into thier dirty little conflicts. We would not have to support Iran with Welfare and we would not have to defend them at every turn they would make a much better ally than Da Zionist Jooz who have done nothing to help America that I can see and are nothing but a drain on America Monetarily and Morally for thier treatment of the Palestinians. America has taken alot of abuse for supporting them not to mention all of the soldiers we have lost in wars that are created because of our alingment with them. Time to Dump the Welfare Jooz and get rid of the Liability and gain an asset by taking Iran on as an ally.
Our economy is dying, war is all we need to bring it back up. We shall get support from the EU as they are in the same condition as well.
I'm dating an Iranian named I-Zheet M'Drurz. We met through a mutual friend, Mustaf Herod Apyur Poupr.
President Obama’s Policy toward Iran
He sold out Kurds like other American before him. He and his Secretary of State Clinton was hoping to use Iran and Turkey against one another. It is not working because Turkey and Iran are smarter than both of them. Kurds are very well organized under the leadership of PKK to be sacrificed easily like Mustafa Barzani in 1975. It is clear that PKK are not depending on the US, EU and Israel for help to survive. They are only depending on Kurdish people and Kurdistan Mountains.
Turkey’s lobbyists are wrong this time. It is 2011 and world has been changed very fast for lobbyist in Washington D.C. to understand. The corruptions in the USA are pushing the US farther to not be able to serve American people anymore.
Wake up Nobel peace prize winner, have some humanity for Kurds too. It is easy to sell out Kurds but hard to sell Palestinian. It is because Palestinian was supported by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. It is understandable that he is in control of oil. The oil interest is going to oil companies not the people of USA. Many young people supported you Mr. President in hope you will be different from President Bush. This kind of policy and other wrong polices of you could make you one term President.
Why World are not supporting Kurds like Palestinian?
Israel and Jews are very powerful in the world now a day. But Arab oil is bending Jewish power, the world are helping Palestinian to form another Arab state. While Kurds are under occupation of the Turks and Arabs (Iraq and Syria) plus betrayal of Persian from the Kurdish blood are without friend in this world.
Aryan Kurds are hoping the Aryan from Europe, North America and Australia will rescue them from unjust practice by Turkey and Arab states plus Shi’a Sayyied of Iran.
But European and American are always ready to sell out Kurds for economic interest in Turkey, Arab world and Shi’a sayyied of Iran.
Kurds was seeking help from Israel and Jews in desperation. Kurds are aware that Israel and Jews never helping others unless they have their own interest in it, since when Israel and Jews helped others.

You really think by going to Iran and spend one week or two weeks there you have the answer?
I was born and raised in Iran and let me tell you something ,just God help all of us and the
whole world if they get nuclear.Just understand one thing if someone do not care about his people, what make you think
that they will care about me and you.
American and the whole world have to put pressure and if it takes go to war with Iran.
Again just God help us if they get the power.
in the news today..what will fareed and his boss(obama) say...????
."debkafile's intelligence sources report that Syria procured the enriched uranium and equipment for the plant from Iraq when its ruler Saddam Hussein in early March 2003 when he decided to dispose of the bulk of his nuclear plant and weapons of mass destruction by spiriting them out to Syria, then his closest ally".
.
"
Just zip it Freed Z. You don't know a ... thing. Where were you when Iran was rubbing elbow with the most prosperous contries in the world. Probably playing marbles on dirt in a Pakistani rural village.
This is a stupid idea, Fareed. The US should not waste time or effort on the Iranian government. The US should focus on talking directly to the Iranian people and members of the Green Revolution. The US should encourage a revolt in Iran. If Iran was not a theocratic state and was run by members of the Green Revolution and denounced support of their terrorist puppets throughout the Middle East and world, then Iran could have a nuclear weapon and not be such a threat.
Oh, and I like the recent attempts at direct outreach to the Iranian people by Clinton's State Department making an American Embassy website targeted directly at the people of Iran. Unfortunately, it will probably be blocked by the Iranian government, but it is a step in the right direction. The US needs to do some of the programs it did during the Cold War of sending television and radio programming in Persian directly to the Iranian people.
For all of you dual citizen israli loyalist . If you don't like what some Americans think about you go back to the mountains of Russia where you are from KHAZARS !!!
I think US should stop interfering in other countries, that is the best foreign policy
The matter is way more advanced than many of the recent events taking place in as for example syria. Iran has a conventional and very powerful army and will strike hard against protests like recently in egypt and libya so from an internal view – arab spring will not make any difference in that country, nor will it in syria in reality. An attack from israel is doomed ,which has been discussed in decades as a solution within the israeli government as even with air support from US , israel is not superior to iran -the two countries are more or less equal in power, and if israel uses its advantage by having nuclear weaponry, syria and many of the countries will turn against both us and israel. a single us strike will not be sucsessfull either as we are not talking about a conflict suffering country like iraq which had a lot of internal problems and frankly -old weapons compared to the more recent iranian technology. The matter can not be certainly won without massive conventional bombing and mortars and if syria is involved, which have well over a million ground troops with 3-4 years of experience like in israel , war solutions may be doomed. taking in to account that US also suffers from a financial depression and can not really afford a conflict -again, israel may be alone if it heats up. Turkey ,which been an ally for many years will not support a strike attack, but may support if israel is being assaulted.
In general -the matter can not be won with weponry , frankly US cant and have not the power to sustain such an invasion as first of all they dont have the support like the first iraq war , no arab country will support an invasion on a brother country easily. I find it also hard to believe that former warsaw members russia, opposite to Nato will sit calmly and watch what happens even though the warsaw community in reality dont exist any longer . If not solved politically, there is no way to win a possible war without spending at least half of the US total capacity of armaments . Many seem to consider iran a old country , but as i have studied the discussions for a long time and even if i believe its time to do something against Iran – who should and can do anything there without russia? There are no landingstrips and no easy artillery ground support against both syria and iran, which together hold a tremendous amount of soldiers and heavy weapons. This may well be a new defeat like vietnam. I try to be open minded but in terms of sheer weaponry, one need approx 2-5 times the defending force to be certain about the outcome, or even higher . A good aeroplane is as for example never better than the rocket attacking it,and as i understand it they have new chinese systems as i read on Janes once. I wish they find a political way ,millions may die if it goes to conflict.
I am in complete agreement with Fareed. It must be in the interest of the US to engage with Tehran, if a)the Silk Road must succeed, b) Afghanistan must survive after departure of NATO troops, c) Militancy in Pakistan must be end d)The Middle East must be stable and e) Oil exports from the Persian Gulf must be secure. Infact a bigger reason is that Persian influence will counter balance the Wahabi spread in all of Asia. The Persians are an educated, cultured and wise people with a rich history and the West must not wait too long

I think it would be catastrophic to the world, if there will be a war with Iran and its allies with Israel and USA. Iran and Syria are sitting on the earth's fault line. A single bomb could trigger large tsunami, earthquake, nuclear war, oil crises and probably Armageddon. And would bury Tehran, Iran, Syria and some Arab countries.
Peace between Iran and the US are better than wars
Dear Mr. Fareed Zakaria, CNN
I want to congratulate for your program and your effort on Iran
“Fareed's Take: Time to re-engage Iran”
Even Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) are not looking for peace. But I hope, the US must will do everything in their power to establish peace for the region.
I am calling for the establishment of an “Economic Union” from Pakistan to Turkey and from Kurdistan to former Soviet Union countries with independent for each nation within that economic union.
Please support my effort and call me for your program so I can explain my book, the “Return of the Medes”. The book is covering 12,000 years old civilization and relation of people to one another in that geographical area.
The “Economic Union”, similar to EU of Europe will solve that regions economic problem and help the US, EU and Israel economy too.

No this is time for iran to come back to the community of nations with all the good that could come out of it. YOU CAN TURN IT AROUND IRAN . must do quickly, for your country, and people who are good people of... I have seen that service fees for online degree experts tend to be a fantastic value. For example a full 4-year college Degree in Communication with the University of Phoenix Online consists of Sixty credits from $515/credit or $30,900. Also American Intercontinental University Online comes with a Bachelors of Business Administration with a full education course requirement of 180 units and a price of $30,560. Online learning has made taking your degree far more easy because you might earn your own degree in the comfort of your home and when you finish from work. Thanks for other tips I have learned from your blog. regards
