Will Ayatollah Khamenei eliminate the Iranian presidency?

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, one of the greatest failures of the country’s leadership has been the inability to make a promised transition from a monarchy to republican rule. In fact, since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began his tenure as Supreme Leader twenty-two years ago, he has centralized power further in his own hands, creating what can be called a clerical monarchy.

Now, Khamenei may be completing the circle and entirely eliminating any notion of a “republic” by turning Iran into a fully blown theocratic and authoritarian state.

Last month, Khamenei made a short statement, which has sparked an intense debate. The 72-year-old Iranian leader hinted at the possibility of dissolving the post of president, one of only two institutions in which the populace has a say.

During a visit to Kermanshah, a western Iranian province, Khamenei announced, “In the country’s current political system, there is a president who is directly elected by the people. This is a good and an effective method. However, if someday in the distant future, it is decided that the parliamentary system is a better way to elect the head of the executive branch, there is nothing wrong with changing the current mechanism.”

So why has the Supreme Leader decided to suggest eliminating the position of the presidency in Iran? What does he have to gain from this dramatic political shift? The most obvious explanation is his determination not to repeat the disputed 2009 election and its aftermath. Elections in Iran historically have offered the population rare opportunities to express their grievances with the regime. The protests in 2009 and 2010, which drew millions of Iranians to the streets, not only seriously threatened Khamenei’s ability to govern, but exposed his unpopularity.

In recent years, beginning with the victorious election in 1997 of Mohammad Khatami to the presidency – an outcome conservatives and hardliners did not expect or want – the regime has faced a dilemma over whether the benefits of elections outweigh the costs. The presidential and parliamentary elections – the two polls in which a sizeable number of the electorate are allowed to participate – provide a façade that the country is somewhat of a republic, even though a body called the Guardian Council vets candidates long before voters ever get to the polls.

But the 2009 election and its aftermath inspired a poplar rebellion unprecedented in Iran’s post-revolutionary history. And now that uprisings have swept the Arab world, it is not surprising that Khamenei is so worried about public reaction to Iran’s scheduled 2013 presidential poll that he prefers to eliminate it entirely.

In addition, electoral seasons in Iran inspire some degree of euphoria within society. It is often a time of lively public debate over politics, women’s limited rights in Iran, the economy and Iran’s place in the world, which generally produces widespread criticism of the regime. Khamenei might believe now that the regime is too weak to withstand such intense public scrutiny.

Should Khamenei eliminate the post of president and instead create a parliamentary system, the power to govern would be even more concentrated in the office of the Supreme Leader and this has been Khamenei’s long-term objective.

In recent years, he has moved to acquire influence over three central branches of government. He effectively controls the judicial branch of the government by personally choosing its head. He maintains control over the legislative branch through the supervisory power given to the Guardian Council. This council consists of 12 jurists who determine the compatibility with the Shari’a (Islamic law) with the laws passed by the Parliament. If the laws do not pass the necessary requirements, the Council refers them back to the Parliament for revision. This effective veto power gives the council the de facto role of a parliamentary upper chamber. Six individuals on this 12-member body are directly elected by the Supreme Leader and the other half by the parliament from the jurists nominated by the head of the judiciary.

Khamenei will further control the legislative branch with the recent approval of the “Parliamentary Supervision over Members of Parliament” bill. On Tuesday, September 27, the Iranian Parliament approved Article 4 of the “Parliamentary Supervision over Members of Parliament” bill, which specifies a method for Parliament to expel certain MPs from the body. Based on one of the provisions in this bill, if the Council of Supervision votes to expel a certain member, he or she is not able to file a legal objection through the judicial system. The bill completely removes the legal immunity of members of the parliament in fulfilling their role as representatives.

This provides Khamenei or his aides with the ability to eliminate any parliamentary member deemed to be a trouble maker. By eliminating the position of the presidency, the Supreme Leader effectively dissolves a semi-independent branch of the government whose head is directly chosen by the people, after the Guardian Council vets the candidates seeking to run in the election.

It appears that discussion about eliminating the position of the president has been underway for a few months. According to Fars News, a semi-official news agency, a powerful deputy in the parliament, Mohammad Dehghan, revealed that the office of the Supreme Leader had assigned a group of legal experts to study the feasibility of a shift in the political structure of the country.

According to Dehghan, “This team has studied tens of articles in the constitution and they have identified some issues.” Dehghan reiterated that this team has been functioning under the supervision of the Office of the Supreme Leader and their findings have been sent to that office. Dehghan is referring to the constitutional articles related to the executive branch of the government.

There are many regime insiders who are worried about the future identity of the Islamic Republic. According to Aftab News, on October 25, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the Head of the Expediency Council, protested the possibility of eliminating the presidency in Iran. He warned that the decision will further restrict the political environment and cautioned that this decision would “be contrary to the Constitution and would weaken the people’s power of choice.”

According to Rafsanjani’s official website, “Republicanism and Islamism are the two unalterable elements of the Islamic Republic,” and changing these pillars will ultimately alter the nature of the regime.

Grand Ayatollah Mousavi Ardabili, an important marja' (source of emulation for Shiite Muslims) who is close to Iran’s opposition movement, also criticized such a possible move. In a meeting with a group of journalists, the Grand Ayatollah said, "Changing the political system and selecting the president [or prime minister] by the parliament will decrease people's participation [in the national affairs of the state].”

Whether or not Khamenei decides to eliminate the presidency, there is little doubt he will continue to consolidate more power in his office. These days, the words of the late Grand Ayatollah Ali Montazeri ring more true than ever. Following the regime’s intense crackdown on political opposition in 2009, Montazeri declared that “The Islamic Republic is neither Islamic nor a Republic.”

I have no problem with how Iran is run, as that is not the issue. I have a problem with its lack of good visibility in the "global public spuare". When you interviewed the president of Iran, I got the feeling that you were headed into a secret location, wearing a blindfold. This is not about making enemies either. I live behind someone from Iran. He is the nicest person I have ever met and I always look forward to talking and learning with him. This is about being forthcoming in truth, for the sake of humanity. I am not seeing any solid global progress and the reason for that is clear. The ark belongs in the temple dome, right now as Moses instructed. We can hash out the details, when we have an accord.

Actually, I'm an Iranian and I DO have a problem with how Iran is run. It's a dictatorship of almost the same degree as Kim Jung IL's, with the only exception that Iran isn't as isolated. However, I have absolutely NO problems with its nuclear ambitions and its stance towards the US. Not that I'm anti-american or anti-israeli. I just think the two of them should just sit down for a sec and think about their own actions in the past and in the present instead of pointing fingers at other nations that have existed for over 2500 years. US and Israel are like the global family's teenagers with more muscles than their wiser and older family members terrorizing the house while trying to find out what it is they actually want. The Iranian government is no threat to any nation whatsoever, though it is a venom to its own people that must be taken care of.
Support the Green Movement, support freedom lovers and all who even dare to say the words 'nuke' and 'iran' in the same sentence can go F themselves.
      Peace to all.

Just because a country has been there for over 2,500 years doesn't make it wiser than others.

To suggest an Iranian government that openly provides money and weapons to terrorist groups is not a threat to anyone else is disingenuous at best.

The United States and Israel aren't the only nations to turn their backs on this theocracy. Many other western nations agree with the United States concerning how dangerous nuclear missiles would be in the hands of a theocracy. Iran hasn't been marginalized simply because of the United States and Israel. Iran is a bad player in the eyes of many. This theocracy is their own worst enemy. Even China and Russia are finally coming around to acknowledging that Iran has not been fully forthcoming on their nuclear ambitions. No one would care about their nuclear ambitions if they had not proven time and again that they aren't interested in International law – only the law of Islam.

what? iran is certaInly a threat, based on the words and actions of that ridiculous government you have there. That guy is taking you people to a very dark place at this rate. Supporting terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah just to start is a good enough reason to never trust Iran. how can you justify that?

Shanin, you're dumb. Iran pursues violence against many peoples. Through Hamas, Hezbollah, and others I don't even know about! Trains terrorist on it's soil and provides weapons for many. It seems Iran is trying to obtain nuclear weapons, which will not be allowed by the rest of the World. The Iranian people can't even topple their government. Take up arms if you have to. I'd rather be free than live under a dictatorship (ayatollah).

As a response to all the questions that were asked in the replies to my comment:
        1. I never said "Iran is wiser than other countries". I said Iran is a country with a history that covers a timespan of more than 2500 years, by which I meant that young countries such as Israel and the US should show some respect and analyze Iran's (and not just Iran's but any other country in the world) history before coming to rash conclusions and inciting war.
        2. To the moronic arguments that include "terrorist funding" and "vowing Israel's destruction": As an Iranian I am very well aware of 2 things. The first is that my farsi is good enough to understand the Iranian leaders to KNOW that they have never literally threatened Israel nor America, nor any other Western country in ANY way. If you think you're Persian is better, then please do enlighten me. The second is the fact that I DO know that Iran funds terrorist organizations but that I also know that the US and Israel do the exact same thing. Assassinating top scientists is by my opinion still an act of agression towards harmless, innocent civilians (see Mossad assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists). And funding sunni terrorist organizations within Iran to destabilize the country is another thing Americans aren't afraid of doing. Much like how the US deals arms with the PKK in Iran (also meant to weaken the regime). You americans like to blame everything on muslims and in this case on Iran, and muslims/Iranians (not all of them though) blame everything on Israel, USA and Europe. But what is the truth? It's everyone's fault. It's just a vicious circle caused by mistakes of different factions of a different age which will never come to an end untill the weakest link is defeated. In this case, the US and Israel are trying to defeat Iran with anything they can: sometimes with facts, sometimes with lies. Iran idem.
        3. Just to give an answer to the ad hominem attacks: I am against the Islamic Republic and I wish for Iran to become a free, secular, democratic state with Islam being driven back to the desert it came from. This however does not mean that I have to agree with every argument Western nations throw at Iran, which are very often nothing but argumenta ad absurdum, inciting exclamations and false accusations. there is good in everyone, even in the vilest of people. Even the Islamofascist regime of Iran is capable of saying intelligent things once in a while...

You want to oppose the Iranian regime? Then do so by supporting its people and referring to its history, not by slandering our culture and insulting our heritage.

You are right on Shahin. Most readers only hear the one-sided propaganda against Iran without knowing the history of the West's dealings in Iran over the last 150 years. There is also selective abstraction of news headlines about Iran that are uniformly inflammatory and provocative ("wipe Israel off the face of the earth"; stoning of women; imprisonment of adversaries; death to gays; etc...). After the New York Times repeated the mistranslation of Ahmadinejad's speech as saying "Wiping Israel off the face of the earth," it was repeated over and over again until now it is taken as fact (he actually just said essentially that in time the zionist regime will pass from the pages of time like the soviet regime). The Iranian president NEVER threatened to harm Israel or Israelis. He did put into question the degree of the holocaust (the mind boggles), not the most sensitive thing to say, but he has never said anything anti-semitic or threatening to Israel or Jews. Not defending his leadership, just keeping the record straight. Most do not know the terror the US has supported against Iran (chemical warfare provided to Saddam Hussein in the 80's; CIA overthrow of the government in the 50's; etc...).

Shahin I agreed with everything you said but wanted to correct your timeline. Iran's history is actually at least 9000-10000 years old regarding settled communities. The first urban site at Susa with written history going back to 3000 BC. History of the Persians (one of the Iranian tribes) as a unified empire in Iran dates to 2500 years ago. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

There will be no peace until Iran's supreme leader, his cronies and his supporters meet their maker and Iran becomes a true democracy, the true intent of its revolution.

The last wise Persian rulers were Cyrus and Darius. Afterwards, and particularly after its Islamization, Persia/Iran has little to teach the world and its contribution to global welfare has been nil. Adolescents we may be, but our contributions far surpass Iran's and despite the age of its civilzation, Iran's lesson to the world is to serve as a warning to others.

Just look at the threads on any political story and see the bashing between the republicans and the democrats. Would that be allowed in Iran? Could you go to some street corner in Iran and start shouting that the ayatollah was wrong? How long would you be allowed to?

Hexdragon: I am fully aware of the Human Rights violations in Iran today, don't need to remind me of that. If you actually read my comments you would have seen for yourself that I am against the IR and I DO wish for Iran to become a free, secular democracy. I just stated that just because it is a bad regime, it doesn't mean we have to demonize everything and everyone connected to it. The IR is a backward regime that kills its own people and commits the vilest of crimes, but in this case I believe America is being driven to another pointless war for obviously ambiguous reasons. The IR is NOT a threat to any other country but its own and that is a FACT, no matter how evil those ayatollahs may be.

Maybe he simply recognizes that it's none of our business. If Iran threatens us or our allies, that's our business. But what form its government takes is neither our problem nor our responsibility. The Iranians have to control their own destiny. It's up to THEM to fight for their own democracy, if they want to. We might not like watching a government crack down on its own people, but national sovereignty is a concept that must be respected.

National sovereignty and national security are often cited when protesters are being murdered in the streets. The protesters are no match for the heavily armed Revolutionary Guards and their minions who will stop at nothing to protect an Islamic theocracy.

During his visit to Kermanshah not long ago Khamenei "hinted at the possibility of dissolving the post of president",
I can imagine it was just saber rattling. Khamenei has a problem with Ahmadinejad and not with the presidential office per se. I doubt if he would go that far, without sensing the rage of the people. Khamenei was a humble person when he became a Khomeini's protege. He seemed to care what other people thought of him. It seems that he wasn't that visionless after all, as he's trying to lead Iran into a nuclear age.

Let's just hope that this doesn't happen. Mahmoud Ahmedinejad is a very good man and deserves to be President despite all the ranting done against him in the West. But then again, the U.S., Great Britain and France want to incorporate Iran into their future Central Asian empire. They tried that back in June 1969 but their candidate Malawi or whatever his name is lost the election to Ahmedinejad! Anyway, any Iranian leader can be a great improvement over that terrible Reza Pahlavi(1953-1979) with his torture tactics and devotion to the right-wing thugs in Washington!!!

Not really, if Ahmadinejad is not careful Khamenei will usurp whatever leadership position Ahmadinejad thinks he has and will not have his feet firmly on the ground but swinging a short distance above. In all of the mid east, the faux window dressing of secularism floats on the surface of the deeper and ultimate authority of islam, barely keeping it's adherents contained as the world opens up like a big colorful vista of different ways of thinking and views and all oppressed people of all faiths and ideologies will see they do not have to exist under the iron fists of despots and religious dictators and will remove them from power with a vengeance. Maybe someday people will see that religion is a force of suppression in this world, not a moral path to higher enlightenment. Religious leaders rule by fear, instilling the fear of the loss of your soul should you deviate from their teachings all the while enriching themselves from their followers toil. Whoever and whatever the creator is sure miscalculated.

Go get the facts about this totalitarian theocratic so called republic, how many people young and old they executed so far, total number of political prisoners at this time are kept in just Evin prison, then get the facts about the time of The Late Shah (not Reza Shah, Mahammad Reza Shah's father, who did even greater than his son). Just hush when you don't know.

Although I believe their is a supreme being that created everything I do not believe that the supreme that created everything left the book called the Bible or any other records for us to know the supreme being by.I think it is something all must find in themselves to know by common sense what is right from wrong.Nature shows itself, and rules of nature are shown through what occurs`s in nature frequently as natural unless common sense shows an occurrence, like birth defects for example,to not be natural.Do I think Jesus Christ actually lived ? I think so. Do I think Jesus Christ is the son of the supreme being ? I have no way to know, using common sense.

Just think. When the GOP regain power, they will start a war with Iran (totally unfunded of course). Then they will draft all the poor people to fight(die) in the war (just like the GOP wants) and give "no bid" contracts to the rich people. Killing two birds with one stone!!! Then we can use Iran's oil to pay for the war. And when the war is over, Iran will sell us cheap oil!!! Just like Iraq........Oh wait........Never mind.

Obviously * they ( * Higher position than the president ), are getting ready to put the current President of Iran in a higher position of power. This will let them control him & quite the Iran people, plus give no way any movement gains any control through any Iran peoples elections in Iran. The only way if done would be if the Revolutionary Guard is taken out.All this means the leadership of Iran will be hiding more behind the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corp`s,meaning the people of Iran or any movement to change Iran in any way whatsoever will then have to take control the IRGC.It`s a safty net for the leadership and a way to totally control all of Iran unless a war changes the power structure.I predict war for sure sometime in the next 8 years. For sure 4 if Obama is not re-elected.

Democratic Party is not the problem.Republican party is the problem.I am a registered Republican and even I saw from day one of Obama election to office Republicans holding back ALL ways for Obama to do anything to help the country. The Republican Senator from Kentucky is a huge problem more or less dictating what republicans ALL do.Republican have from day one held back on any real help to the country to try to play a game to make it look like Obama is responsible for their inaction's. Obviously it has worked on you and many others.Obama has tried to pass so many measures only to have republicans turn them away in both the Congress and senate for the blame game they are playing.Did you know Republicans actually tried to put 8 republicans in offices running as Democrats until the problem was caught ? Under rules they could only be disqualified not jailed.Republicans play dirty if not secretly outright illegal I have finally come to see.I will be changing my status to Independent & will never vote for another Republican as long as I live because of what Republicans have done to this country since Obama has taken office. We would be in great shape by now if Republicans had only worked with Obama instead of filibuster his every attempt to create jobs and better the system.Hopefully you will to be able to discover what I have and help throw the real bums out of office which are not the Democrats, but Republicans and Republican moles.

Hope all is well your & everyone`s way :

    Really, Joseph McCarthy?

The name you chose is quite fitting. First off all, Iran's leader from 1953 – 1979 was Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi, his father was Reza Pahlavi, who was the founder of modern Iran. Without the Pahlavis, there would be no semblance of modernity in Iran. No railroads, no communication lines, no universities, etc. Iran was a neglected country, essentially an ex-officio colony of the British and Russians until Reza Shah the great came to the scene. In fact, he introduced a resolution when he was Prime Minister to establish a republic in Iran with an elected presidency but ironically the idea was rejected by the mullahs who instead suggested that he become Shah instead.

As an Iranian, I am deeply offended to read your statement that "Ahmadinejad is a good man". did you realize what you were saying when you wrote that? What is your reasoning for such a claim?

I am not claiming that the Shah was perfect, but there have been four different regimes in Iran in the last 100 years: the Qajar dynasty, the Pahlavis, that brief stint with Mossadegh and the Islamic republic. When you compare all these, only one can emerge as the overall best choice for Iranians. under the last Shah, Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi, Iran had a negative unemployment rate, new industries, a strong defense, etc. And Iran was persuing nuclear power technology with the help of other nations, not their chagrin.

Joe, you say the Shah was a "torturer", well if that is true then what does that make Ahmadinejad? Because in the first days of the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979, more people were executed than in the 37 years that the Shah was in power. One million people were killed in the Iran-Iraq war, many of them children sent into mine fields to clear the way for tanks. When Iran and Iraq went to war under the Shah, it lasted merely days with Iran victorious and without the use of children as sacrificial lambs led to the slaughter. Compared to the current regime in Tehran, the Shah's government was quite humanitarian given the fact that it was still a developing society.

Anyhow, I just can't see your rationale Joe by defending Ahmadinejad and criticising the Shah. That's like defending Hitler by criticizing the Kaisar of Germany. It doesn't make much sense.

You can have an Islamic theocracy or you can have a Republic; but you cannot have an Islamic Republic. Its like the formal name of North Korea: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Everyone knows that North Korea is not Democratic and not a Republic. It is simply amazing that somehow naming a country as an Islamic Republic should matter an iota. Such is the power of language and cleric's fear that calling Iran an Islamic theocracy in the modern world is not acceptable. What a joke on the people of Iran. Do you really believe that the Iran people do not know that they are living in theocracy not in a Republic?

The biggest mistake the US govt has made in the last 20 yrs, was turning against our best ally in the arab world–Saddam Hussein. We should have kept fueling the Iran-Iraq war until both sides would be in ruins. We then could have "placed" leaders in power with favorable tendencies to the US and Western Europe.

Realistically speaking there are only very few Countries in the World which adopt presidential system.
Notably U.S.A.; Russia (basically US-like system minus vice president - eliminated in 1993); Belarus,
Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Georgia (all are setup like Russia); France (the only
    presidential republic in western Europe; still powers of president are less than in US);
Ukraine (presidential powers are significantly limited to mainly foreign affairs; internal politic is yielded
to prime minister), and thereafter we are talking about Iran, Siria, Egypt (although it is not clear what it
is now), Pakistan (actually a joke presidency), and handful others.

Dissfunctionality of Ukranian half-Presidential half-Parliamentary system was spectacularly
demonstrated during the last five years culminating with standoff between then Pres. Yushchenko
and prime-minister Timoshenko. Their example is actually a note how a country should NOT be
setup. It is a recipe for permanent crisis.

Dissfunctionality of U.S. presidential system is being demonstrated now when most of
the initiatives of Pres. Obama are being blocked by the opposing parliament. And this is at
the time where the country needs a functional government.

Russia and Kazakstan work only because of strong personalities of Putin and Nazarbayev
respectively. Buck in Yeltsin's times this political system was as dissfunctional as in Ukraine.
Long before that Stalin was technically a prime-minister. One can think anything about him,
but there are two things he was NOT: he was not dissfunctional; and he was not corrupt.

France ... well ... Sarkozi in kind of ... short, and it seems that French are not very happy.

So basically if Iranian Ayatollas look around and gather World experiences, switching from
presidential to parliamentary system does not seem to be a bad idea or an evidence that the
regime is crumbling. I guess, the German current political system in an example of successful
    crisis-less form of government.

Iran equals Persia these fellas several thousand years ago tried to kill democracy at its birth place. In Greece let history remind us these Persians/Iranians are and always have been against free thinking people. Slavery was invented by these people. How can we ignore this clear crystal fact. Its hilarious when you think the Presidency could be taken away. Thats how hollow it is the people think they have the right to vote for what a hollow frame with no picture inside.
Hahaha no one could do that here in this country without an actual vote. Let this be a reminder to all those who crap all over this country. You are more free and independent here then you possibly understand and can comperhend.

Those countries in the Middle East should do themselves a favor unite for one common cause. That cause to eliminate Iran from the map. You think they will not attack you because you are a Muslim ha you are more foolish than the world thinks you are. I tell you Iran is working on something big that if you do nothing to stop it now you will have the deaths of thousands. Its nasty to say but the last time Iran went to war with Iraq. 1.3 million Iranians died with 300,000 Iraqies. With of course the more important lose of 1 trillian dollars in all that oil. You don't want that to happen again now do you? I know the death of people have no importance to heartless people. But you have to keep your wallet in mind correct.

"Kill democracy at its birthplace"? Listen mate, if you're gonna act smart, at least do your research, alright?
The Persians wars had NOTHING to do with democracy. In fact there is no archeological evidence whatsoever that suggests that Persians even had slaves. If anything, it was forbidden in the Persian empire to own slaves as decreed by Cyrus the Great himself. The historian Tom Holland even wrote that many Greek slaves (slavery was an official legality in Ancient Greece), which consisted of almost a third of the entire Greek population, welcomed the idea of Persian rule since it would mean freedom to them. Not to mention the way lakedaemonians (aka 'spartans') slaughtered unarmed Helots for fun. The Persian empire was built on the principles of freedom of speech and freedom of religion, how else would Herodotus himself have been allowed to criticise the Persian Empire so openly while living in Persian territory?
Yes Greeks may have set the foundations of present day democracy, but it was in NO way the "birthplace" of democracy, since democracy itself is not a Greek invention, but a very common trait to many primitive and non-primitive societies over the globe. Greeks were the first to give it an actual name and use it as a fixed form of government. Even so, Athenian democracy was far from libertarian since only about 75% of the entire Athenian population was legally allowed to vote. Women, Slaves, non-athenians and minors were not granted any votes. Not to mention the adult athenian males who barely had the chance to travel to town and cast a vote. Of the +- 300 000 Athenian population, about 30 000 were legally allowed to vote, minus the number of people who didn't choose to vote + considering that magnificent Greek habit of blackmail and bribery, this must have been an excellent system!
Anyways, just wanted to say that you should definitely get yourself educated, because the way I see it, you're nothing more but ignorant trailertrash. And you know where you can stick your racist and hate filled remarks.

The idea that Iran would painstakingly and at great expense develop a nuclear program, just so that it could insure its own complete annihilation by lobbing its first few warheads at Israel, is utterly laughable. If they were so foaming-at-the-mouth hot to nuke Jerusalem – a Muslim holy site, by the way – they could undoubtedly have spent some of those millions to BUY the weapons with which to do it. It's like accusing someone of spending years and thousands of dollars to become a master gunsmith in order to make their very own gun – with which to mug their neighbor.

This leaves us looking for other reasons for Iran pursuing its own nuclear capability, such as energy independence and a deterrent against certain unnamed nations that don't know how to mind their own business.

Also, Rob – Iraq was the aggressor in the recent conflict between Iran and Iraq. Look it up.

Iran has has every right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. That is what its declared aim is, while it denies it has any intention to divert it to military use. The western countries led by Israel do not believe that the latter is true because they themselves lie all the time. Attack on Iraq was based on lies. They also want Israel to remain the dominant power in the region so that it can bully them at will and permanently occupy Palestinian land and subjugate the Palestinian people. Besides, there is nothing wrong with Iran developing nuclear weapons to defend itself against the expansionist state of Israel which is suspected to secretly posses upto five hundred nuclear warheads with a range of five thousand miles, potentially giving it the power to destroy the entire world. We must be much more afraid of Israel than Iran. What we see here is prejudice. Also, they say that Iran can not be trusted with nuclear weapons because it is a theocracy. This is a false notion as truly theocratic nations do not lie as a rule. And Iran is a truly theocratic and peace loving nation having not waged war in a thousand years of its history, in contrast to Israel which has repeatedly attacked all of its neighbours several times in its short years of illlegitimate existence.

Actually, it was Israel's neighboring countries that had repeatedly attacked. If those countries had not attacked, they would not have lost territory and there would be no Israeli occupation of those lost territories. The plight of the Palestinian Arabs was caused by the military mistakes of other Arabs in attacking Israel. Jews and Arabs have lived together in the region for thousands of years. Israel is not a new country. Israel existed there since before the Roman Empire. Israel has existed for nearly six thousand years. Far longer than the repressive theocracy in Iran will exist.

I find it laughable that you say Iran threatens no one. Lol. Please . They fund and arm Hezbullah for the sole purpose of trying to kill as many Israelis as possible and it's eventual destruction. It is not like they are hiding the fact that they want to wipe another country off the face of the earth. not a threat? Lol. I have no problem with any country getting nuclear weapons as long as they are not controlled by people who constantly get orders from god. Right now Iran is the only country in the world that can make that claim. That is the biggest threat in the world. Also there never would have been a Mossad in the first place if the the one billion Muslims only allowed them to live in peace. There is a Mossad out of necessity for survival. If you feel Israel is a threat to Iran please inform me when they ever supported the destruction of Iran. If you really want respect then overthrow that disgusting regime that you people have. Persians are descendants of Cyrus the Great, who after defeating the cruel Babylonians rulers, gave all freedom back to the people of Babylon and set the slaves free. Please do a little research and then post whatever you think based on the historical facts.

What people need to know is that Mullahs are much more savvy to put themselves in a position such as a dynasty. To understand that you should be familiar with Iran's history and you'll see that their history is dotted by dynasty after dynasty. One other thing that yo should know is that Mullahs been around in Iran for over 1400 years and none of these dynasties that have existed previously included a single "Mullah" dynasty!! Surprised?!

These issues and propagandas are only to mislead the American public to get them ready for another war to justify what will come ahead. Iran is another country trying to survive the threats of war and the sanctions that WE have emposed on them. They are fighting for their life and culture and heritage.

    Get real.

For all the "nice" talk about Muslim Spain "peaceful" co-existence, we fail to realize that in the most moerate Islam (then, as now) it never ceased to be [classic form bigotry] anti the 'other' and extremely violent. Islamofascism was always a matter-of-fact.

    To Stoch:

Islamic Fascist Republic of Iran DID threaten to wipe off Israel in 2005 [telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/10/27/wiran27.xml], it was not mistranslated as LONER "expert" Islamist-appeaser Juan Cole trires to lie: jcpa.org/text/ahmadinejad2-words.pdf), it reiterated it in 2007 (in ther words "Israel and US will soon die [ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3356154,00.html]), but it's nopt new, the Los Angeles Times [articles.latimes.com/1994-08-04/news/mn-23412_1_porous-borders]] reported already in 1994 that (the one responsible for the anti-Jewish racist-Islamic massacre in 1994 at the AMIA building in Buenos Aires: the cleric Mohsen Rabbani said after the massacre: Israel should be wiped off.

Insane ad Criminal Mullah Regime can not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.

Read this:  Stoning to Death in Iran:
    A Crime Against Humanity
Carried Out By the Mullahs' Regime
Some items form the Penal Code of the mullahs' regime:

The penalty for adultery under Article 83 of the penal code, called the Law of Hodoud is flogging (100 lashes of the whip) for unmarried male and female offenders. Married offenders may be punished by stoning regardless of their gender, but the method laid down for a man involves his burial up to his waist, and for a woman up to her neck (article 102)
Article 104 of the Law of Hodoud provides that the stones should not be so large that a person dies after being hit with two of them, nor so small as to be defined as pebbles, but must cause severe injury. This makes it clear that the purpose of stoning is to inflict grievous pain on the victim, in a process leading to his or her slow death.
