The Obama Administration has been fairly wise and consistent in pushing the Egyptian military to democratize. But the Egyptian military has benefited from a general climate, especially in the West, of fear of the Muslim Brotherhood and the rise of political Islam. Even liberals in America who would ordinarily, you’d think, be championing the process of democracy have been very fearful.
The result is that the Egyptian military has felt it had more leeway to stall and delay on democratizing. The Egyptian military has been trying to carve out a special role for itself, which in effect places it above the law and above the democratic process in Egypt.
This is a terrible idea. It is essentially subverting the Egyptian revolution. Civilian control of the military is one of the hallmarks of democracy.
Egypt has two choices moving forward. It can go down the path of Turkey, where the military’s privileged position has been reduced and placed under constitutional constraints and democratic, civilian government. Or Egypt can follow Pakistan, where the military exists as a law unto itself controlling vast swathes of the economy.
It is pretty clear which is a healthier society. Turkey is a booming, democratic country that has become one of the great growth stories of the world. Pakistan is a completely dysfunctional basket case that survives only because it gets aid from the United States (and that aid is largely given for fear for what would happen if Pakistan collapsed).
Ultimately, the Egyptian military needs to understand that the cost of trying to hold on to all its perks is that Egypt will become a deformed, malfunctioning democracy. That’s a steep price to pay.

He doesn't hate Pakistan, he speaks the truth. Pakistan is a corrupt, unstable basket case even by the standards of most military dictatorships. Ask most Pakistani exiles, who have left because their beloved home country is so screwed up.
And what isin't true about it? That the Taliban controls huge swaths of the country? That is has made no economic growth? That is has been run by dictators since its creation? That military coups are common place? That Osama Bin Ladin was hiding next to their most prestigeous military acadmey? What progress has Pakistan ever made?

As an Egyptian, all i can say to haters, with all due respect, you know zero foreign policy and zero about egypt. He is making complete sense and this is what we feel in tahrir (liberation) square. That is well put and a see through what we want. This is why we are there in tahrir, to stand in the face of the military not to take us where we don't want Egypt to be. We paid a dear price in Jan & Feb this year. We will not let anyone, including military, to change our path.
The world is with you 100%. Just please work for a secular state and keep religion in its rightful place – at home. Few countries will want to deal with a fully Islamic to the core government. If that happens you will have no international investment, no tourists and no future.

Pakistan has not succeeded for whatever reason (corruption of civilian leaders, bad governance ect.) and indeed military has contribution towards its failures because of not allowing democracy over many decades. But my point is, Zakaria is a biased journalist and I see him spreading hate towards Pakistan whenever he talks about Pakistan. He is a well-known Pakistan hater. As a journalist on CNN he should leave his Indian agenda aside and get over hate and stop point scoring by speaking a certain language.

Even I'm not supporting bigotry comments, I'm not big fan of Mr. Zakaria and this ignorant and baseless article just pushing my negative opinion even further. Been PHD in "Political Science" isn't proof of knowledge, but just that he knows what to say to be liked by his professors/superiors (been adviser to President Obama saying more about Obama problems with stuff selection then Zakaria's smart).
The problem with this opinion of Mr. Zakaria is historical ignorance (or luck of knowledge): Turkey became highly successful when military WAS in control of civil life and changed elected leaders like used underwear (at least 6 times in second half of 20th century). Turkish current civil government standing on achievements of long military rule (and not contributing much to Turkish standing, by the way). Switch from military to civil happen under external (European) pressure (as a one of entry condition for joining EU). The difference between Pakistan and Turkey is not Military vs. Civilian, but Secular vs. Islamic. And this is a huge difference completely ignored by Mr. Zakaria, witch make all other word coming from his mouth completely irrelevant.

I like democracy for myself, but I know that some times it's not working well for "others" (my kids, for example
. You can call it "hypocrite" or "realist" – it won't make a difference. On a philosophical level I'm against dictatorship, but politics is an "art of possible" and I would choose a "lesser evil". In case of nowedays Egypt, with no developed democratic tradition and a civil society, a military dictatorship (with all its brutality) is a "better deal" then creation of an Islamic state under sharia (at least from my prespective). Yes, it still a slim chance that "seculars" will prevent "Islamist" from becaming dictating force in a democratic process, but this chance is too slim for my liking, and risk is too great.
Fareed, many of the above comments prove why we need more "smart" guys like you on the air and fewer idiots that pass as "analysts" and "experts" that only suck up the oxygen the way a fire does, leaving us with no real benefits.
The ultimate test of any democracy is not whether the right or wrong guys are in charge, but whether those who are in power and then lose an election are willing to leave. Let people make mistakes at the ballot box and then correct them the next time around. Washington new this to his core when he refused to stay past two terms. We have made mistakes and then corrected ourselves. If the Egyptians want to elect some leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, let them. Do we honestly delude ourselves into thinking that the force of young people that kicked Mubarak out are incapable of tossing out religious fanatics that think they can take over the government forever?
The Turkish model is instructive, especially if everyone remembers that Ataturk was first a soldier, then a statesman who carefully guided his nation away from the hands of small minds and religious zealots and towards a western style democracy. But he kept a sword nearby, just in case.

based on your starting comments you don't like my comments, but hesitated to reply directly (smart move as you can't argue facts), however I do like your comments and see them as support of my position: Ataturk shrived to make Turkey on French example; France is legally Secular, but Catholic; Turkey is legally Secular, but Islamic. I would correct you only in one thing: he didn't "kept a sword nearby, just in case", but used it allot and pass it to his successors without wiping blood off. And this sword-of-Ataturk (a.k.a. Military) kept Turkey secular for long years until recently.
Second, about democracy and elections.
America was very lucky to have Washington. It's not known (to me at least) any other case in human history when successful leader willingly and voluntarily restricted his own power. When an opposite examples when democratically elected leader became "dictator for life" are countless (Hitler is the most obvious example, but not the only by any means; nowadays those attempts, with different level of success, are in progress by Chavez and Putin/Medvedev tandem). Expectation that democracy works how it suppose to work is naive-idealistic trap that even very pragmatic people failing in (for example former President Gorge W. Bush with his Iraq "nation-building" strategy).
So, with Egypt, if Islamist forces will get power by – democratic means – more likely then not it will be end of democracy. So, the practical choice is not between democracy and military dictatorship, but between military dictatorship and Islamic dictatorship. I wish to be wrong, but wishful thinking won't help much.

Fareed is correct when he mentions pakistan's failure . Pakistan suffered from bad governance and a continous war scenario with india. Economy unstable aided by poor governance and corruption sunk into our foundations that is considered as a personal right amongst all. Egypt more or less the same has its chance to change otherwise what they stood for against mubarak would dissipate as some revolt resulted by american regional interests. Fareed native country is no good either , would you compare a country having 15% of its population in slums with a model like china ??

There is always a good reason and a true reason. Those youth at Tahrir square says the Army has intensions to stay in power. Although there are no signs that the Army is interested in power, yet we the majority of Egyptians will give the benefit of the doubt and simply ask you: PROVE IT. The parliament elections will take place next week and by the end of June 2012, we will have a president. You waited 10 month, you might as well wait 7 days more for parliament elections and wait for the presidential elections after it. Then and only then we will be if the army will leave or not. BUT since we both know that this is not the true reasons behind what is going on at Tahrir square ... lets talk openly and say that you and the people behind you do not want a Civil Law Country ... instead you want an Islamic state ... but the army is an obstacle in your way to achieve your goal. So let’s get ride of him now so he wants cause you problems later. As I said there is always a good reason and there is the unspoken true reason.

و تتوالى الضربات للسنة: لم يكد السنة يفيقون من ضربة طائفية وجهت لهم من خلال فصل كوادرهم الوظيفية في قطاع النفط في الدورة و بيجي حتى فوجؤوا بضربة موجعة أخرى تمثلت في فصل كوادرهم التدريسية من جامعات بغداد و ديالى و تكريت، تحت ذريعة اجتثاث البعث. تلتهما ضربة ثالثة شنت من خلالها القوى الأمنية الشيعية حملة اعتقالات طالت أكثر من 700 من سنة محافظة بابل ( شمال بابل ). وعندما سألت فضائية بغداد المسؤول الأمني عن هذه الحملة عن سببها ولماذا شملت هذا العدد الكبير من المعتقلين، قال بكل بساطة أن هناك مذكرات قضائية بالاعتقال بناءا على معلومات استخبارية (طبعا مذكرات قضائية ومعلومات استخبارية من أجهزة أمنية شيعية طائفية).
وتحت ذريعة اجتثاث البعث تم طرد كوادر سنية وبأعداد هائلة من أكثر من وزارة يسيطر عليها الشيعة بشكل مطلق. ورغم وضوح الدافع الطائفي المحرك لهذا الإجراء الإقصائي البغيض وبشكل لا ينطلي على أبسط إنسان من أهل السنة في العراق، ينبري المسؤولون الشيعة في وزارات النفط والتعليم العالي والداخلية ليقولوا وبكل صفاقة إن المسألة لا تتعدى اجتثاث البعث ومحاربة الإرهاب. المسألة واضحة للعيان، وشمس الحقيقة لا يمكن أن تغطى بغربال من الكذب الذي اتخذه القوم دينا. لكن اللوم -كل اللوم -على قادتنا السنة الذين يقابلون هذه السلوكيات الطائفية المشينة بتوسلات واستخذاءات مصبوغة بصبغة وطنية ثبت انتهاء صلاحيتها منذ سنين. يا زعماء السنة! إحتراما وإكراما لمن تمثلون من أهل السنة الذين تتوالى عليهم المصائب والاعتداءات وحملات الإبادة والتهميش والاستئصال: كفاكم مواربة وخجلا من تسمية الأمور بمسمياتها...انزعوا عن جرائم الشيعة أقنعتها واكشفوا للناس دوافعها ولا تقابلوها بمعاتبات وطنية لا تجدي مع المعتدين نفعا ولا يلقون لها بالا. ماذا تريدونهم أن يفعلوا بنا أكثر مما فعلوا لكي تعوا بأنها حرب طائفية على كل الصعد، وأننا مستهدفون لأننا سنة؟ متى تدركون بأن من لا قوة له لا حق له اليوم في الحياة الحرة الكريمة؟ أما آن لكم أن تفهموا بأن الحقوق تنتزع ولا تهدى؟
إنها – ببساطة- حرب على أهل السنة، فماذا أنتم فاعلون؟ هل ستستمرون في مقابلة هذه الجرائم الشيعية الطائفية المعروفة للقاصي و الداني باستنكار "وطني"؟
يقول أحد زعماء السنة معلقا على إقصاء الكوادر السنية إن طرد هذه الكوادر التدريسية (و كلهم من السنة ) سيضر بالمستوى و الإرث الأكاديمي للتعليم العالي، ولم يصفه مثلا بأنه تعسف طائفي، ناهيك عن استعمال كلمة "سنة".
أما عن اعتقال المئات منا فقال إنه يجب على الإجراء الأمني ألا يكون بشكل عقوبة جماعية...هكذا و انتهى الأمر. و آخر يقول إن الظلم سيضر بالأمن و الاستقرار في العراق- هكذا.. كلام وطني مائع مميع.
الوطنية غطاء للجرائم الشيعية، فالواجب كشفه لا تثبيته
الشيعة يُغَطّون جرائمهم في كل مرة بالتبريرات الوطنية العامة لأنهم يخافون من أي مواجهة سنية شيعية علنية حتى ولو كانت كلامية، فما بالنا نغطي جرائمهم بحقنا ..و نستنكر أعمالهم بلسان وطني أيضا وكأننا نقدم لهم خدمة عظيمة من خلال الإبقاء على هذا الغطاء بدلا من كشفه؟
نحن بهذا نشجعهم على ذلك شعرنا بذلك أم لم نشعر..وإن بقينا على هذه الاستكانة والخور والخجل من الهوية فإننا سندفعهم الى التمادي في إلحاق الأذى بنا.
لقد كانت هذه السلوكيات العدوانية الثلاث متلاحقة و سريعة قياسا بالمرات السابقة. وفي المرة القادمة.. لا يعلم إلا الله كيف وأين ومتى ستكون الضربة. وكأنهم يقولون لنا: "اعترضوا أو لا تعترضوا ..فالمخطط مستمر، و إضعافكم مستمر، و مشروعنا مستمر".
إن الاكتفاء بالتشكي من هذه الاجراءات بلسان الوطنية المتهالك هو في الحقيقة تشجيع للمجرمين ليوجهوا لنا مزيد من الضربات. ولم لا وكل ما يصدر منا سوى معاتبات واستجداءات تؤشر على هوان مفرط وانبطاح مذل؟
نحن بحاجة إلى أن يظهر مسؤول سني واحد ليسمي الأمور بمسمياتها ويصرح بأن حملات الإقصاء الجارية اليوم هي حرب طائفية على السنة ولا يخشى في الحق اتهام المعتدين له بالطائفية، فلا يعقل أن نتورع من وصفنا بالطائفية وهي تمارس ضدنا ليل نهار وسالت بسببها دماؤنا وزهقت أرواحنا واغتصبت أعراضنا ونهبت ثرواتنا. وإن كنا سنوصم بالطائفية إن نحن دافعنا عن كل ذلك وكمقابلة للطائفية بمثلها، فحيهلا ومرحبا بها، على الأقل لكي يفكر الشيعي كثيرا قبل ان يوجه لنا الضربة القادمة ، لذلك فإن ما سنربحه اكثر مما نخسره ..هذا إن خسرنا شيئا. وعلينا أن نتباهى بهويتنا السنية ونكافح من أجلها لا أن نتوارى منها خجلا ونستنكف منها كأنها سبة أو تهمة، فلا خير فينا إن لم نتمسك بسنيتنا التي هي الإسلام الحق الذي ليس بعده إلا الضلال، ولنتذكر قوله سبحانه: "أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ . الَّذِينَ أُخْرِجُوا مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ إِلا أَنْ يَقُولُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ وَلَوْلا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لَهُدِّمَتْ صَوَامِعُ وَبِيَعٌ وَصَلَوَاتٌ وَمَسَاجِدُ يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا اسْمُ اللَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَلَيَنْصُرَنَّ اللَّهُ مَنْ يَنْصُرُهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَقَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ." (الحج 39-40 ) الغريب أنه في حين يجاهر رموز الشيعة بشيعيتهم ويحاولون جاهدين أن يصبغوا العراق بالهوية بالشيعية كأحمد الجلبي و عادل عبد المهدي و علي الدباغ، نجد أن هويتنا السنية لا بواكي لها. وإن لم يتدارك السنة أنفسهم ويستشعروا خطر التملص من هويتهم فسوف يندثرون ويصبحون أثرا بعد عين. وعلى من يتكلم من أهل السنة عليه أن يتكلم من منطلق كونه سنيا لأن ذلك، رغم ما نمر به من مرحلة ضعف آنية، فإن سيرعب أعداء الله وأعداءنا، لأن سنيتنا حبل الله المتين المتصل بالله وليست مجرد مكون من مكونات بلد أصبح نهبا لأذيال إيران وغيرها من أعداء الله والوطن.
إن قادة السنة اليوم في تعاطيهم مع الوضع السني الراهن إما خائفون متخاذلون، وهم في هذه الحالة لا يصلحون لقيادة السنة ويجب تنحيتهم في أقرب فرصة انتخابية، وإما غير مكترثين ولا يهمهم الانتماء الى الهوية السنية مع محاولتهم رفع الظلم – ضمن الإطار والخطاب الوطني- وبالتالي فهم أيضا لا يصلحون لتمثيل السنة.
إن طريقة تعاطي قادة السنة اليوم مع ما نلاقيه من إجحاف واستهداف لا يرتقي أبدا إلى ما هو مطلوب منهم من ردات فعل ومواقف تشفي غليل المضطهدين السنة. فإن كان ذلك منهم خوفا وتخاذلا، فأولى لهم التنحي وترك الميدان لفرسانه، وعلى الشارع السني تنحيتهم في أقرب فرصة انتخابية. وإن كان ذلك منهم عدم اكتراث وحرص على الانتماء لهويتهم السنية – مكتفين بمحاولات خجولة لرفع الظلم عن طريق الخطاب الوطني- فهم كذلك مقصرون وعليهم ترك الساحة لمن هو خير منهم وأنفع لمن يمثلونهم.
هل يعقل أن نسكت عن كل هذه الممارسات الطائفية القذرة والتي ليست آخرها هذه الإجراءات العدوانية الثلاثة المتسارعة و المتلاحقة بحقنا؟ هل بلغ بنا الهوان أن نرضى بحياة ذليلة كمواطنين من الدرجة الثالثة ونستحيي من إعلان هويتنا السنية المستهدفة والتي بدون التمسك والإعتزاز بها والعيش تحت رايتها لن تقوم لنا قائمة
ورغم هذا يتهموننا بالطائفية!
رغم أن الممارسات الطائفية مصدرها واحد وهو الشيعة واتجاهها واحد وهو أهل السنة، لا ينفك الجلاد من وصم الضحية بالطائفية. لذلك نجد الكتل الشيعية الطائفية لا تتوقف عن اتهام القائمة العراقية البائسة بالطائفية، وكأن لسان حال الشيعة يقول لنا: "من حقنا ان نضطهدكم لأنكم سنة، و مع هذا فنحن لسنا طائفيين، أما إذا دافعتم عن أنفسكم ورفضتم ممارساتنا المشينة فأنتم طائفيون وإن اعترضتم بلسان وطني.
فما دامت التهمة جاهزة حتى لو دافعنا عن أنفسنا كعراقيين لا كسنة، فعلام الخوف والتردد من تهمة الطائفية؟!

The problem with a lot of developing Countries in the last Century was that, in the name of security, disproportionate priority was placed on the Military. Even Banana Republics, who could not feed their people, spent huge sums on the Military. Is it any surprise that in this Century, Civilian Governments are trying hard to retrun the Military to the barracks and clip their wings and this is becoming almost impossible. Unfortunately, Egypt is following the Pakistani model and the people in Egypt are embrasing the Turkish model. After a lot more bloodshed, Egyptians Military will run out of bullets to fire at their people.
لا زلِتُ أذْكُرُ يومَ اختطافي على الطريقِ الواصِلِ بينَ سَاحةِ اللقاءِ ومنطقةِ الوشاش وسطَ بغداد قبْلَ أكثرَ مِنْ أربعِ سنين على يدِ أفرادِ دوريةِ شرطةِ منطقةِ المنصور ثم بيعَهم ليْ إلى ميلشيا جيشِ المهدي الدجال . هكذا بَدأ صاحبي بسرْدِ قصتِه عليَّ بَعْدَ أنْ عَرفَ اهتماماتي في الكتابةِ ضِدَّ الفكرِ الهدمي الشيعي.
يقولُ صاحبي: لازِلْتُ أذْكُرُ السَّاعةَ التي اُختُطِفْتُ فيها كأنَّ أحْدَاثَها تجري للتو . كانتِ السَّاعةُ قدْ تجاوزتْ الثانيةَ ظهراً ، وكانتِ الشوارعُ شِبهَ خاليةٍ إلاَّ مِن بعضِ المارَّة هنا أوْ هناك حينَما استوقفت سيارتي دوريةُ شرطةِ المنصور ، وطالبتْنِي بهويتي التي تقرأ أنَّنِي موظفٌ في دائرةِ استثمارِ أموالِ الوقفِ السُّني حينَها طلبوا مِنَّي التَّرجُلَ مِنَ السَّيارةِ والركوبَ معَهُم وحينَها عرفتُ أنَّهُم مُقدِمُونَ على اختطافي ولاسَّيما بعدَ الحوادثِ المتكررةِ التي كنَّا نسْمَعُ عنْها ونراها أمَامَنا هنا أو هناك ، لمْ استطِعْ أنْ أُقاوِمَ أفرادَ الدَّورية لأنَّهُم كانُوا خمْسَةَ أفرادٍ مسلحين ، ولمْ استَطِعْ أنْ أطْلُبَ النجْدَةَ مِنْ قبلِ بعضِ المارَّةِ الذين بدورِهم أسْرَعُوا في الهُرُوبِ مِنَ المكان . فمنَّيتُ نفسي أنَّهُم رُبَّما يطلقون سراحي بعدَ أنْ يحققوا معي ، ولَكِنَّها كانتْ مُجردَ أُمْنيةٍ أُمّنيّ بها نفسي تشبثاً مِنَّي بهذه الحياةِ. لا أستطيعُ أنْ أصِفَ شعوري وخلجاتِ نفسي في تلك اللحظةِ ؛ فلقد كنْتُ خائفاً جِدّاً وأفكرُّ بأولادي وزوجتي وأمي وأبي ومصِيرِهم مِنْ بعدي ومدى حزنِهم عليَّ.
لم أُطِلْ الوقوفَ والتّوسُلَ بهم والتحايلَ عليهم كي يتركوني لأنَّ عنواني كان واضحاً ، وكان الخورُ والضعفُ قد بلغ مِنّي مبْلَغَه فصعدتُ معهم السيارةَ وأنا كُلّي أمَلٌ في حصولِ معجزةٍ ما ؛ لكنْ سُرعانَ ما اتصلَ أحدُ أفرادِ الدورية بسّيدٍ يُقالُ له سّيد علاء ، وبدأ يساومه في بيعي له . عرفتُ لاحقاً أنَّ السّيد المذكور مسؤولٌ عن بعضِ مجاميعِ ميلشيا مقتدى ، وهنا أدْرَكْتُ أنَّ موتي أصبحَ مسألةَ وقتٍ لا غير. وهكذا تم بيعي ب(100 ألف دينار أي ما يقرب من 75 دولار) وأُخِذْتُ إلى بيتٍ كائنٍ في حي أور ، وأُدْخِلْتُ غرفةً مِنْ غُرَفِهِ فوجدتُ أمامي ثلاثةَ أشْخَاصٍ أحدُهُما شيخٌ كبيرٌ والآخرُ شابٌّ مُرَاهِقٌ لا يتجاوز عمرُهُ (16) سنة والثالث رجلٌ قد جاوز عقدَه الثالث عرفتُ بعدَها أنَّ اسْمَه عُمرُ العبيدي وكانَ رجُلاً صاحبَ دينٍ وملتحياً فرُمِيتُ إلى جنْبِ هؤلاءِ . وبدأ الخاطفون يتصلون بأهلي لمساومتهم على مبلغ عشرين دفتر (200 ألف دولار) بعد أن أسمعوهم صوتي، وبدؤوا يتعاملون مع أهلي ويساومونَهم .
كانت لحظاتٍ عصيبةً جدّاً كُنَّا يومياً نؤخذُ لنُعذَبَ مدة ساعتين أو ثلاثة بشتى أساليبِ التعذيبِ ، ومنْها قلعُ أظافرِنا وثقبُ أجسامِنا بالدريل وسكبُ الماءِ الحارِّ جدَّاً على رؤوسِنا ، وكُنَّا جميعاً جزعين إلاَّ عمر العبيدي فمع أنَّه أكثرُنا تعذيباً من قبلهم إلاَّ أنَّه أجْلَدُنا وأصبَرُنا وكثيراً ما كانتْ تعلو وجهَه ابتسامةٌ صفراءُ ساخرةٌ . لا زلِتُ أذْكُرُ أنَّهم حينَما كانوا يأخذونَه من غرفتنا فإنهم كانوا يجرجرونه من لحيته ، ويشبعونه تعذيباً ، وكنُّا نسمعُ صُراخَه يومياً في الليل ، وكانوا يقولون له : ها أبو جفصة (استهزاءً باسم ابنته حفصة ) ها وهابي (شنو رأيك هسه) .
أذْكُرُ أننَّا كُنَّا في بيتٍ تسكُنُه عائلةٌ نسمعُ صباحاً صوتَ أطفالِهم ونسائهم وصوتَ أعمالِهم المنزلية ، وكنَّا نستغيثُ بهم وليس من مغيث حتى أنَّ الشابَّ المراهِقَ معنا توسل بامرأةٍ عجوزٍ في البيت وخاطبَها بقوله:( يمه الله يخليج بلكي تخلصينا )فالتفت إليه العجوز وهي تقول له: إنجب (اخرس) وهابية .
كان الجميعُ قدْ أيقنَ بالموتِ وطلبوه ودعوا اللهَ أنْ يُخَلِصَهم مِنْ هذا العذابِ الذي هم فيه ، وسُرعانَ ما بدأ التنفيذُ والشروعُ بالقتلِ حينَما همَّت مجموعةٌ بتهيئةِ عمر العبيدي لقتلِه وحينَها سألتُ عمرَ لماذا هذهِ الابتسامةُ على مُحيَّاكَ ؟. فقال أنا أحمدُ اللهَ ربي أنَّني لم أكنْ في يومٍ مِن الأيام مخدوعا بهؤلاء أو مخدوعا بدينهم لقد كنت أعرفهم وأعرف خصَالهم جيدا ، وأعرفُ أنَّ دينَهم هو من يأمرهم بذلك ولهذا أنا حينَما سوف أقابلُ ربي فإنَّي سأقولُ له بملءِ فمي لقد قُتلِتُ مِنْ أجْلِ دينِك ومِنْ أجْلِ حُمَاةِ دينِك صحابةِ رسولِك (صلى اللهُ عليِه وسلم) ومِنْ أجْلِ أنَّني نافحتُ ضِدَّ أعداءِ دينِك . فأنا مُرْتاحٌ اليوم لأنَّني لمْ أكنْ يوماً مخدوعاً بهم . أمَّا أنتم وأمثُالكم كثيرٌ من أهلِ السُّنةِ فلا زلتُم إلى هذا اليومِ وأنتُم أحْدُ شخصين ، شخصٌ لا يعرف لماذا هذا الحقدُ عليه ، وشخصٌ يعرف لكنَّه يقولُ ليسوا سواء – أي ليس جميعهم حاقدين وقتلة – .
لم يكد عمر العبيدي يُكْمِلُ كلامَه حتى سمِعْنا صوتَ جلبةٍ أمَامَ البابِ وإذا بمجموعةٍ تدخلُ علينا الغرفةَ لتقتاد عمر ، وتنفذَ فيه حكمَ الإعدامِ كما عرفنا ذلك لاحقاً .
بَعْدَ يومين مِنْ هذهِ الحادِثةِ تَمَّتْ مداهمةُ الموقعِ الذي نَحْنُ فيه مِنْ قِبلِ الجيشِ الأمريكي ، وأطُلِقَ سراحُنا ، ولم يُعْتَقلْ الخاطفون كالعادة.
سكتَ صديقي قليلاً ، ورفعْنا أيديَنا بالدعاءِ بالرحمةِ والمغفرةِ لعمر العبيدي ( رَحِمَهُ اللهُ تعالى) وجميعَ شهداءِِ أهْلِ السُّنة المغدورين.
في هذه الأثْناءِ دَخَلتْ علينا زوجةُ صديقي المخطوف لتُقَدِمَ لنا الشاي والبسكويت وقد سَمِعَتْ أطرافَ حديثِنا فقالتْ: واللهِ أنا لا اعرِفُ إلى هذا اليومِ لماذا كلُّ هذا الحقدِ عنْدَ بعضِ الشيعةِ على أهلِ السُّنةِ ... وهنا التفتُ حانقاً إلى صديقي الذي طأطأ رأسَه خجلا...
أحقاً يُوجدُ اليوم مَنْ لا يعِرفُ لماذا استشرى بنا القتلُ والتهجيرُ وانتهاكُ الأعراضِ وسرقةُ الأموالِ والممتلكات ؟... أوْ يعِرفُ ويعتقدُ أنَّهُم ليسُوا سواء .. حقَّاً لا أعرِفُ ، وأتمنى لو أعرِفُ
لا يتعلم العملاء من دروس التاريخ ، فهم مدفوعون باحقاد متجذرة في نفوسهم على كل ما هو عراقي وعربي ، فمع اقتراب موعد الانسحاب الامريكي المفترض من العراق تسارعت خطوات المهزومين باتجاه التخلص من قادة العراق في الاسر في اقرب وقت ، سواء باساءة معاملتهم اكثر مما سبق بمنع الدواء والعلاج عنهم لاجل قتلهم ، او التهديد بتنفيذ الاعدام بهم كما حصل مع شيخ الاسرى المناضل طارق عزيز . ان المزيج الواضح من الحقد والرعب من تحرير العراق هو الذي يدفع العملاء في بغداد للتهديد باعدام قادة العراق الاحرار والشرعيين ، ولكن هؤلاء لا يفهمون التاريخ ولذلك لا يأخذون العبر منه ، فالتاريخ يقول بان الاعدامات التي تنفذ للتخلص من الاحرار تزيد لهيب الثورة اشتعالا بدل اخمادها ، وامامنا مشهد اغتيال سيد شهداء العصر القائد صدام حسين حيث تحول الاغتيال الى مناسبة لزيادة عزلة الاحتلال والعملاء وتوسع شعبية القائد الشهيد والبعث .
واذا كان العملاء يعتقدون بانهم سيفلتون من عقاب الشعب فهم واهمون ، لان جرائمهم اكبر من ان تمر بلا عقاب ، ومنها اغتيال مئات القادة وتصفية الاف الكوادر المقاومة للاحتلال ، واعتقال عشرات الالاف من معارضي الاحتلال ، بالاضافة لتدمير العراق وتبديد وسرقة ثرواته علنا بحيث اصبح العراق المحتل في مقدمة الدول الفاسدة والفاشلة . ومهما اعتقد العملاء بان الاغتيالات سوف تضعف الثورة المسلحة ضد الاحتلال فان النتائج ستظهر لتؤكد بان الدم كلما سفك زاد لهيب الثورة وعجل موعد الحسم .
ان طارق عزيز يمثل احد اهم الوجوه المشرقة والمشرفة للعراق الحر والمستقل والسيد وصانع انجازات التقدم العلمي والتكنولوجي ، وهو كان يعد من افضل الديبلوماسيين في العالم ووصل امر الاعتراف بقدراته حد ان جورج بوش الاب حينما كان رئيسا ، وبعد فشل المفاوضات في عام 1991 بين وفد العراق برسائة طارق عزيز والوفد الامريكي برئاسة جيمس بيكر وزير خارجية امريكا وقتها ، قال امام بيكر وغيره بانه يتمنى لو كان لديه وزير خارجية بمواصفات طارق عزيز . هؤلاء هم رجالات العراق العظام سواء الاسرى منهم او من استشهد ومن مازال يقاوم الاحتلال بلا كلل .
ان اسرانا يخطون بتضحياتهم تاريخا مشرف للعراق ةوالامة العربية ، بصمودهم ورفضهم الانحناء لغطرسة الاحتلال ووحشية عملاءه ، وهم يعرفون منذ البداية بان درب تحرير الوطن وتحقيق اهداف الشعب ليس نزهة وانما هي تضحيات كبرى لا تنتهي الا بتحقيق اهداف الشعب ، ولذلك كانت وقفة رفاقنا وهم في الاسر مشرفة وتجلى ذلك في تمسكهم بمصلحة الشعب ورفضهم الرضوخ لتهديدات بالموت رغم ممارسة ابشع انواع التعذيب معهم وحرمانهم من ابسط حقوق الانسان الاسير ومنها العلاج وتوفير الدواء .
البعث الذي كان ومازال يناضل من اجل تحرر الامة وتحقيق المجتمع الخالي من الفقر والامية والمرض ...الخ وهذه الاهداف لا تتحقق الا بتضحيات مناضليه الذين يعرفون ان الاعدامات والاغتيالات مصير متوقع ومحسوب ، مثلما يعرفون ان الموت دفاعا عن الوطن هو خير خاتمة للحياة ، ففي النهاية جميعنا سنموت في يوم ما ولذلك فان اختيار الموت المشرف هو احد سمات صناع التاريخ والحضارات والتغييرات العظمى في مسار الانسانية . في ضوء ما تقدم فان التهديد بتنفيذ الاعدامات او تنفيذها فعلا لن يوقف مسيرة تحرير العراق واعادة العراق الى حالة الدعالة والاستقلال والامن وامان لمواطنيه كلهم بل على العكس سيزيد اصرار الثوار على التعجيل بالنصر وطرد الاحتلال وعملاءه .
وهنا لابد من تكرار التنبيه الى ان ما يسمى منظمات حقوق الانسان التي كانت تنظم الحملات الضخمة ضد العراق تحت واجهات خرق حقوق الانسان وكانت حملاتها احد اهم ممهدات غزو العراق تلتزم الصمت المطبق الان تجاه معاناة اسرانا وتعرضهم لاشد انواع خرق حقوق الانسان وعلنا ، ومع ذلك لا تفعل هذه المنظمات شيئا وكأن الامر لا يعنيها ! واذا كانت الدعوة لحماية حقوق الانسان جادة فان من الحتمي معاملة كل البشر بصورة متساوية لا ان تجري عمليات انتقاء وتزوير وتضخيم من اجل الدفاع عمن تريد امريكا حمايتهم لكن مناهضي الاحتلال الامريكي لا ينالون اي قدر من كشف ما يقع عليهم من مظالم .
وبهذه المناسبة فاننا نكرر دعوتنا للكتاب والصحفيين الاحرار في العراق وفي الوطن العربي لرفع اصواتهم دفاعا عن اسرانا وكشفا لما يتعرضون له من مظالم فظيعة ، وذلك احد اهم واجباتهم الوطنية والاعلامية والاخلاقية ، والصمت بازاء ما يحصل لاسرانا ليس سوى خيانة للامانة ونكوص عن مسار النضال الوطني والتحرري ، والتاريخ الان يسجل كل شيء .
