Obama must do something tangible for Syria

Editor’s Note: Danielle Pletka is the vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank based in Washington, DC. Before joining AEI, she served for ten years as a senior professional staff member for the Near East and South Asia on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. By Danielle Pletka – Special to CNN

Obama administration officials have labeled the United Nations’ failure to act on Syria as “outrageous” and a “travesty”.  But that’s about all they’ve done about Syrian dictator Basher el Assad’s wanton murder of thousands of innocent Syrians.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the failure of last weekend’s weak Security Council resolution, more than 400 Syrians were killed in ruthless assaults.  They had nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.  Syrian opposition leaders have begged the international community to act, to do more than convene in contact groups and make rounds on the diplomatic circuit.  But their begging has fallen on deaf ears.

Why care about Syria?

Let’s again rehearse the simple reasons:

- Syria is the soft underbelly of Iran, Tehran’s most important ally, conduit for arms and cash to terrorists.

- Syria has been home to and sponsor of terrorists that have killed American soldiers and non-combatants in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Israel, in the West Bank and more.

- Syria was likely behind the murder of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon, an act for which it has paid no price

- Syria has been the godfather to Iran’s terrorist creature, Hezbollah, which has degraded and exploited the Lebanese state (among many other sins).

-Syria’s despotic government has murdered thousands of its own people and will continue to do so until Bashar al-Assad has secured once again his dominion over the Syrian people.

A unique confluence of American moral purpose and America’s strategic interest argue for intervention in Syria. It’s time to do something tangible.

It’s time to start arming the Free Syrian Army, convening the disparate factions of the Syrian opposition and coaching them toward an interim government. It’s time to create safe zones along the border with Turkey and humanitarian corridors to get there.  It’s time to protect those corridors from the air with a limited no-fly zone and establish safe cities.  And it’s time to do all that without benefit of a Security Council resolution, because let’s admit it, the Security Council’s moral authority is nil with Russia and China in permanent seats.

It’s time to begin to work with Turkey and coax the Islamist Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan into a position as moral leader in his region.   He may be taking Turkey down a dangerous path, but at the moment, he’s willing to do the right thing on Syria.  Let’s double down on that.

It’s in the U.S. interest; it’s also in Israel’s interest, and worth their while to arrange themselves on the side of Turkey and the Arab League against the loathsome al-Assad.  That doesn’t mean coming out publicly and intervening in Arab affairs, but it does mean beginning to have quiet talks behind the scenes with interested parties.  Indeed, it is fascinating that Israel, which has found itself in weird concert with the Arabs on Libya, Iran and Syria, has failed to exploit that position to improve its regional relations in any way.  One might almost think Israel an indifferent observer to ouster of al-Assad, a sworn enemy.

Syria will have a post-Assad future.  That future could be in the hands of Qatari backed Salafis, Saudi-backed Islamists, or the Western world could have a say.  Sitting on the sidelines will ensure that we have as little as possible.

Here is what President Barack Obama said about Libya in May of last year:

“To brush aside America's responsibility as a leader and – more profoundly – our responsibilities to our fellow human beings under such circumstances would have been a betrayal of who we are. Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as president, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action."

How does Syria not meet that standard?  For shame on Obama for his hypocrisy, his indifference, and his abdication of American moral and strategic leadership.

What Obama needs to do is to keep this country out of Syria's civil war where it has absolutely no business! Moreover, he has no business making demands for any kind of "regime change" in Syria. On the other hand, some country like Germany or Russia needs to get the Assad regime and the so-called "rebels" together to try to settle the current unrest there.

Thirteen months ago advocates of the "Responsibility to Protect (R2P) trumpeted these three words to justify the imposition of the No-Fly-Zone over Libya, which ultimately led to the fall of Gaddafi's regime. Why doesn't it resonate in the same ears when it comes to Syria? It just shows that inconsistency in politics doesn’t necessary have to be seen as an erratic behaviour but a choice of pragmatic realism.

Democracy is simply how we elect our officials. These same officials are keeping us out of a WW3 by choosing to listen to the demands of Russia and China. But yea just keep typing in all caps people will listen to you more

Hey guys let me tell you something and is you are wrong, those people burning the american flag is only a little bunch of bad guys that form part of their governments, most of the people admire the freedom we enjoy and the deserve live free, this Assad in power is the continuation of his father regimen and is willing to kill everybody in order to keep the control, we together with the international community must act and help those people get rid of this dictator and for those who think the USA only move the army to get the oil benefit, tell me something where is the free oil we are suppose to be getting from Iraq. The freedom principle this nation was built up is what move us ,nothing else.

Yes Norm, we should stand aside. This is not our responsibility. Obama needs to do something? WHAT ABOUT YOU??! How much are you willing to have your taxes increased to pay for these interventions you advocate? How many family members are you willing to have die or be permanently disabled in military service? Are you willing to do yourself? Presidents do nothing but spend your money and soldiers' lives.

And even if we "win", whatever we might conveniently define as victory this week, how many casualties are you willing to accept? Analysts have argued that number could far exceed even Vietnam – so the question becomes, win – but at what price.

I agree, every country needs to have its Civil war. The problem with the US is we want everyone to be the way we are but as you know that is not going to happen. We need to stay out of it. In Africa they have been killing people for years and we have not done anything about it. let nature take its course. Look at Iraq and Egypt, we helped and the countries are falling apart.

@ Norm: I care about freedom – I could care spit about democracy. How we select our leaders is less important than that they be capable and with OUR interests at heart. Our democratic system has produced a class of leaders that most assuredly does NOT have our interests at heart – they see us as a resource to be exploited.

You are attributing your own worldview and superimposing it on the Syrians. They are not trying to achieve freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (which I assume you meant life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). THERE CAN BE NO FREEDOM IN ISLAM. If the Sunni majority wins, they'll "elect" to wipe out Christians, Shia, and Alawite minorities.

This is not our problem – not our fight.

        @RICH,
I do respect your view, , However, if we cant protect the innocent anywhere in the world, then we cant
call ourselves americans or people who view democracy as sacred...IF we do not fight for these values
        whether they be in France,
Vietnam or Syria , then we will have to fight sooner or later....better sooner than later with nuclear threats...

@ Norm: "if we cant protect the innocent anywhere in the world"? In all seriousness, WE CAN'T protect the innocent EVERYWHERE in the world. We must pick our battles and fight them when/where we have an interest. We have no interest in Syria.

Yes, Joe, there is bloody difference! And you are obviously ignorant of what this difference is! So why would not you do a service to yourself and people around and would not look it up in Wikipedia? Here, specially for you in siple terms: Genocide – Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopediasimple.wikipedia.org/wiki/GenocideCached
Genocide is the crime of killing many people who are all part of one ethnic group, religious group, or some sort of similar group, and trying to destroy that group.

Where do you see the Genocide in Syria? So far even CNN could find nothing to report on actual Genocide. All it does it talks about armed rebels attacking government military and police and those retaliating. Or opposite. And with civil collateral damage and all: it is more like civil war, is it? Do you want me to look up the definition of a civil war for you?

        February 9, 2012 at 10:07 am |
      • JOH

Andrey clearly you know vocabulary but do you know current events? Syrian brutal crackdown on its own citizens started before the Libyan intervention. At first it was a protest. Assad sent the military forces/police forces to a district where he assumed was where the majority of the protesters came from. And just started shooting down everyone that came across their path. There ARE worse cases of genocide and this is still in its early stages... but with Russia and China backing them, even specifically Iran, there's no way it's NOT a genocide.

How is it not a genocide? You put the definition up yourself. Group of people being killed for no good reason. They didn't commit a crime. It goes further than just civilians being caught in a crossfire between the military and the rebel group. The opposition came AFTER military personnel defected when they witnessed countless civilians being killed off the streets like how Kings used to send royal guards to massacre and wipe out the slums for a poor thief's sins. THAT IS GENOCIDE. I guess you're one of those useless drones this country produces. The ones who can't think for yourself and analyze a situation but will just regurgitate information from wikipedia.

Joe: WHY do we have a responsibility not to let murder happen in other countries? Unlike you, I don't think the U.S. has any responsibility whatever to prevent adverse events, even mass murder, in other countries. There are situations when the U.S. may choose to intervene, but that is an option we choose (usually unwisely), not a responsibility we have. There's a difference.

IFor those who do NOT want the USA to help the people of Syria, you need to ask yourself a simple question... IF you had been the US president in 1938, would you have come to the help of the 6 million Jews in Europe when the Holocost began OR waited until 1945 when the camps were closed ??? History DOES repeat itself and we as American need to ask ourselves how important our VALUES are.

How do you propose we help? We are deeply in debt. We are dealing with lack of health care, people starving at home, losing their homes, unemployed. They just don't make good news.
And how to help. Arm the insurgents? Isn't that how Osama Bin Laden started?
Of course we want to help, but which group should we deny at home?
The money sunk into a dragged out war could have taken care of our needy. Now we have debt plus more in need.

And what about the famines in East Africa. Why only help Syria? We physically cannot help, everyone and of course it tears at our consciences.

The tragic part is, if everyone just I'd something to help all these problems, they would diminish.

How can we help without making everything worse unless the entire world commits resources ?

Wrong. TO whom much is given much is expected. This nation has to do something about what is going on there. TO allow this leader to kill his own people is not what is expected of us. How many lives will be lost every time we sit by and do nothing. You can best believe that Iran will at this time retaliate against the US and Israel both for the sanctions, as well as for the perceived systematic killing of its scientist by using the Hezbollah and other means of retaliation.

This is when the chess board must be reset and prepare for any possible move by this axis of evil.

Post a frigate, destroyer and sub in the strait of Hormuz along with a carrier with stealth bombers with the new bunker busters and a few drones. Then seek permission form Saudi to launch a few drones from their to strike Syria hard. ANy move by Iran or Syria should then be met with a blistering response targeting the regimes in both countries. A signal must be sent to Russia and China.

Secretar of State Clinton should also use this opportunity to show the Islamic countries in Africa where both China and Russia are doing business to show them what these two countries are doing. She should make a point to appeal to moderate muslims that these countries are condoning the killing of fellow muslims in Syria, and make a point to show what they have done against muslims in their own countries.

This should also be used to then get these African countries to kick out the Chinese and Russians form their countries and launch a new initiative similar to what was done in Australia and enhanced a renewed Asian initiative. Draw the noose around the neck of Iran during this time and if they make any wrong moves use the stealths to remove the nuke facilities deep in the mountains.

ummmm... exactly who are intending to target with your drone attack? You have a way to distinguish who is who, and have no concern that innocent civilians aren't in harm's way there? The potential for disaster is incredible... not at all a good idea

        February 9, 2012 at 9:50 am |
      • TelH

And exactly how would doing all of that stop the Syrian regime from killing its own people? Assad has 400,000 boots on the ground. Doing a stealth bomber flyover and parking even a carrier group in Hormuz is going to do exactly nothing to stop him. The only thing that's going to do that is an opposing army. The Syrian military opposition is nowhere near as organized as Libya's was, so we'll have no help from that quarter. That means ... a lengthy occupation. Against an Arab dictator's fractious country. That borders on Iran. That will attract tons of terrorists sponsored by Iran. With Iran and the Saudis being the prime beneficiaries of the whole mess. With us holding the bag and paying the bills. Again. I think I'll take a pass on being the sucker this time.

Right on, George! It's the United Nation's responsibilities, not the USA. If the UN didn't do anything then so be it thanks to Russia and China's vetos. As a law-abiding American, we want a full protection from our government, not appeasing to enemies. Why throwing our tax $$$$ to other countries even they despise and loath us.

I agree with you 100% Norm. It is our responsibility as HUMAN BEINGS to save the lives of the terrified babies, children, women and men, grandparents and families who are being slaughtered. It really is so sad that most of the people who are commenting – are doing so with justifications of money?! and "tax payers dollar"?! I truly feel sad for your hearts and for those of your families. Were the tables turned – as no doubt one day they may – you yourselves, will be posting videos on youtube and begging for someone to come in and save your children if no one else. And God willing – there will be someone out there who has compassion and mercy in their hearts.. If there are too many people who take your position, then you and your family will wait to die just like these people now.I do NOT believe for a second that you seriously believe you are above anyone else on this planet – bc it is in that very moment that you are beneath all of us.

Each of us, George, has the moral imperative to provide for the continuation of our family, our region, country, people and planet. Would you argue that our neighboring town could tear itself to pieces and we would do nothing? The line of town or country is man-made and artificial. They are only good so long as they can be defended and supported by the people. If there is someone like al-Assad who clearly represents a threat to our survival and advancement then we have the moral authority. This is why we create police and military forces beholden to the voting public.

Your line of thinking has a word – isolationism. And it's never benefitted the US in the long run.

We are hated around the world for enforcing our values on people we don't understand. It's time we have leadership that protects the United States and stops losing American lives for people who will turn on us because we don't value their beliefs. We can't help what we dont understand. Let them hate us for our freedom, not because we play big brother when we feel like it. Why aren't the other arab nations doing anything? Shouldn't they be the first to respond? So much for brotherhood in war. We need to stay out of it. It's just that simple

I 100% agree with this comment...and further elaborate on it. Why do we continue to think that this country can just waltz in and drop troops and hardware to fight against ANY country because the opposition is requesting help? Aid them with weapons is one thing...but, military intervention is another ball game. Haven't we learned anything from the Iraq war(s) or Afghanistan? The Syrians are NOT going to love us if we help them out, no more than the Iraqi's did (and dont believe the mainstream media telling us that they do). Wake up already. I hate the fact that innocent children are dying over there because of another radical leader. However, isnt ANYONE in this country sickened by the fact that our men and women are dying too in these foreign countries? Are we that numb to the reports of another soldiers death? We are always so quick to say, "Go to war"...yet, those who vote to go to war will not send their own sons or daughters to the battlefield. Its pretty easy to play God when you are not the one in a distant land dying for a cause that has NOTHING to do with the United States. Spend more money on counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, intelligence, etc...not ground wars. The American public has NO MONEY to pay for these ventures anymore, not to mention do not want our sons and daughters to be on the ground in a foreign country either. Its about time we worry about domestic affairs, and worry a lot less about Israel and her enemies...cause when it boils down to it...this is what it is all about. Russia and China will absolutely frown upon intervention, and we then may end up with a conflict with one or both of them. Does our eloquently spoken journalist think we should drop troops in Beijing or Moscow and overthrow their leaders too? The American public needs to speak up...NOW...and not let us go to war, again. Let the opposition fight the battle...let them figure out a way to overcome the odds, like our forefathers did in the 1700's. Sooner or later, one of these wars we get into because we feel we have to be a big brother will come back and haunt us. It may not be with tanks and guns...it may be with a nuclear warhead dropping from the sky on cities in the United States because we bit off more than we can chew.

To those proposing we do something, please elaborate on what.
bombing means invasion by special forces to find targets. We don't bomb blindly. And even with that civilians get killed.
Assassination. Yes we have done that. Is that what you think we as a nation should continue to do to cleanly solve problems?
Arm the insurgents? That was Osama Bin Laden. We armed him. How many died more than the original problem we fixed?
What solution is there? Why not be mad at China and Russia for arming the Syrian government?
We need the world to wake up. As long as 2 superpowers help theSyrian govt stay forcibly in power, there is not a whole lot we can really do.
Do you know how many civilians died from our help in Iraq?
Where has our intervention really helped without the help of a multinational response?

How can you live in America and be so narrow-minded? We've intervened in conflicts before that were NOT our business. We reamined silent when the Holocaust was occuring and again, we choose to remain silent. It would be very ironic if Syria got on their feet and we, Americans, were placed in a position similar to theirs.

They'll just be ungrateful anyway." How privileged we are to live amongst cowards like you who just sit back and hope for the best.

Stupidity is not bravery, and declining to help is not cowardice – it is picking one's battles. This is not our fight, though I have no doubt almost as many will blame us for inaction as they would for action. That's just the Middle Eastern mindset – don't blame the killers (Muslims killing Muslims), blame Israel and the US who have nothing to do with the situation.

However, we SHOULD come out and announce that no help will be forthcoming for Syria, from us. Then the opposition can stop hoping for US intervention, and can deal with the situation based on reality. Because hope is not a plan.

Unless we stand by and let millions be killed, what we have to do immediately is to convene NATO. Lay down that ultimatum that unless NATO intervenes immediately, we pull out. NATO's role would be to declare a no fly zone; target every location that houses an artillery(?) location and then warn that even the government is not safe if it does not call off its military. Assad would fall within a week.

In my opinion, ANYONE who thinks the killings should stop should grow a pair and step in! They need help! We can't just sit around waiting for the entire free syrian army to be destroyed for us to finally move in. Give them weapons! Give them medical attention! Give them HELP! We went in immediately once Gadhafi starting killing Libyans, so why can't we here?!? This is wrong, and Al-Assad is using the excuse "they are terrorists" to save his regime by killing all of them, when they aren't terrorists and are just people fighting for freedom! Isn't that what the United States, India, Libya, and so many other countries did at one point? It's time to take action and help.

It is not up to America to help every time. It is up to the world to help every time. The problem is that every time America gets involved in a revolution the result never comes to be what is expected. You, the rebels, expect help, but what we get is a Muslim brotherhood that scoffs at America, because you believe we are infidels. You call the President a liar. Yet he has helped Egypt and Libya for what result. Why would America help you if you do not respect us or you scoff at us once we have helped you succeed in your revolution and you will come back and spit upon us. Nevermore!

I disagree with the article. Although atrocities are being committed it's the responsibility of the Muslim nations to step in, not ours. I wouldn't want my son defending their freedom because ultimately whatever regime will be in Syria they're gonna choose allegiance to Islam over being an ally to the US and our way of life. I wish them well.

Who cares if they choose allegiance to Islam?! That's like saying, if for instance, we here in the US were being tortured and killed and the Muslim nations said, "Eh, let the western countries take care of them, I wouldn't want my son defending them because they will chose allegiance to...(Oh let's say christianity) over being an ally to us Muslims and OUR way of life." America helped people of Bosnia and Kosovo and saved them from Serbian slaughter.

America gave Afghan kids better hospitals, now Afghan girls can go to school.

America reduced the insurgency in Iraq and topple a bloodthirsty murderer called Saddam Hussein.

America helped the Libyans overthrow a dictator who ruled over them for 40 years and he was going to wipe out Benghazi.

America is not a force of evil, it is a force of good.

Intervening is the right thing to do. Iran will be weakened by this.

God gave America strength, no one in the world can match it.

Please do not leave thousands of Syrian children asking for help.

Right! And honestly that is the only reason why the US does not want to get involved without the entire UN. We are considered allies of both China and Russia but our relationship with both is and will probably be forever strained. In answer to this article, it has a lot of misinformation, number one, it has nothing to do with us, it is an internal affair, if we are so concerned about civilians being killed, why are we allowing tens of thousands of Mexicans being killed and nothing gets done. And about the other African countries that killed millions of their own people and we didn't do anything either.

We are not the world policemen, we made a lot of mistakes getting involved in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we are serious about assisting other countries with military force, reintroduce the draft, so some rich parent's kids will to go to war and not just the poor ones. Let's stop this nonsense in helping the poor Syrians or anybody else, if they want to have a revolution, so be, but, don't ask us to get involved.

Lets remember one thing. If Israel attack Iran which I doubt it, Syria will support Iran . Assad has said that if any foreign intervention he has his missiles aimed at Tel-Aviv and the airport. If Obama does come to the assistance of the Syrian people it must be without the knowledge of the Russians and the Chinese, and that will be impossible. And besides even if he can its an election year, they'll be out of luck. And there is a trace of Iranian support militarily in the fighting. We just better off stay out of it.

Good point. Syria and Iran have a mutual defense pact – if we engage in Syria directly, it's the same as going into Iran. Perhaps that's the actual reason some are pushing us towards attacking Syria.

      • HA25

Of course it is. The article makes it clear also. This is a humanitarian issue but also aligns with our strategic interests. If al-Assad is not in charge of Syria, there's a chance Syria won't back up Iran which isolates them further, and may prevent the Next Big War *WHEN* Israel goes after Iran. Iran may just collapsse like Syria and maybe, just maybe, the Middle East (like Russia) will become modern and democratic on it's own without further *major* conflict.

I don't see that same issue in Mexico or Africa. Nor have Somalians, for example, shown the resolution to stand up to their dictators like at least some Syrians have.

It's not even about what we did in the past and with who but what we, as people should do now, in the name of our humanity. Everything we do and don't do, reflects on who we are... So think about humanity... and ask yourself if you think these people deserve help from more fortunate people and countries.

An average muslim will say that America is intervening either because of OIL or to protect their own interest even when America is clearly acting in good faith. CNN actually pays Danielle for writing such garbage and blatant propaganda ? The reason you are strring up the Middle East pot is to please our pimp in Middle East and get my country into insane war that most likely will mean annihilation of the Holy Land-guaranteed ! If the stupid think thanks of morons continue to advise our leaders like with Iraq that led to our bancrupcy we will implode from lack of oil. This time the stakes are much higher than 1967. Israel may try to bomb our big ships and blame on Iranians similar to what they did in 1967 with SS Liberty . In case they were losing , they would blame it on Egypt. One problem , the ship did not sink and many sailers survived to tell the thruth what happened to them. Our government told them to keep their mounths shut and our " investigative journalists"did diddly squat. Now , the media is calling for war with Iran and they think it will be a peace of cake like in 1967 to steal more land and water.I beg to differ. It will be total insanity and Israel will be no more. Just think , Natanyahu's grandfather was a Rabbi, may have lived a few bllocks from my grandmother-maybe he even bought newspapers from her near the Polish Senat in Warsaw before the war. They probably passed each other on the steet saying hello. Now his grandson wants to make the biggest mistake of his life. Why can't we live in peace ? My grandmother, very fine religious woman , I am sure would be very nice to Natanyahu's grandfather and they lived in peace. Why can't we ?

Why is it that when someone critizes Isreal that they are branded antisemitic. They did infact attack the USS liberty in broad day light after sending at least two recons over the ship. How can an experienced military pilot confuse a converted freigther with an armed crusier. Don't let a a major cover up by Isreal and the U S government be confused with justice. Lets make no mistake, isreal has been living in fear of its neighbors since their begaining. They know that there would be no Isreal if it weren't for the U S. An that's why it has been said numerous times that Isreal has a real strong lobby in D.C., maybe to Strong. When our politicians are more concerned with the welfare of Isreal then their own country, theres a problem. That excuse of supporting our allies don't hold water, They have no choice but to be our ally.

I was told once by a ranking military intell. type officer that Isreal will do anything to anybody if they feel its a threat to the state of Istreal real or imagine.

The bottomline is, just because you don't like the politics and/or the politicans of any given country doesn't mean you dislike the the country or the people in it, the U S included..

I'm so disgusted with most of the postings on this site! For one thing, how many soldiers did we lose in Lybia??? None that I'm aware of. This woman is exactly right! We should not sit back and allow things like this to happen. Not when it's an armed military against unarmed civilians. In some ways, this is worse than Libya! All we need to do is go in and bomb the hell out of the military installations and guard the routes that allow civilians to escape, because those trying to escape today are being MURDERED! Where is your compassion! We can do this with little to no loss of life and cripple Iran and other terrorist organizations. I totally agree that Iraq and Afganistan were mistakes, but this isn't and we don't even have to put soldiers on the ground to make a difference. Did we deserve to be born or imigrate to this country??? No, we were lucky enough to be born here. We are supposed to be a "nation under god" that helps people and all you people that think we should do nothing are as guilty of murder as they are... OOOH, let's save unborn fetus but who cares about people that are already born... it's okay if the die.... disgusting... You make me sick

Nero, if you are that bothered, go and enlist in the army to fight. Don't just sit there and decide who should go and die an ungrateful set of people. It's a pity that children are caught up in this mess but, unfortunately, they live amongst people who see non-muslims as infidels and will turn around to curse them once help has been administered. Go and ask the muslim brotherhood or Taliban that told the Libyans, after the west risked lives and money to help, that they should remember 'what the west represents'. Thereafter, the Libyans have turned to these fanatics instead of showing some appreciation to the west. UNGRATEFUL MUSLIMS SHOULD HELP THEMSELVES, AMERICANS DO NOT NEED THEIR OIL, THIS TIME

Iraq was not a failure. Took more than expected, but we did what we set out to do - remove the Saddam threat and replace it with something we can work with. (Iraq didn't attack us - neither did Hitler) Afghanistan is not a failure either, just hard to help a backword country. Lybia was not a failure. Sure point out all and spin the negatives - but there's a greater amount of good if you open your eyes to it. We have the moral duy to help Syria. If not, then your the same person that watches someone get beat up in the street and doesn't try to help.

I don't have a globalist agenda, just doing what's right versus doing what's wrong. If you saw someone in need, would you just says sorry, I don't want to interfer with you? Just cause you help someone doesn't mean you want to take over their stuff. And sure Hitler attacked our merchant ships that were aiding his enemy england - Saddam equalled that with his shooting at our aircraft for 10 years in the UN no-fly zone and an attempted assasination attempt. So Hitler probably did less to provock our attack than Iraq.

Somebody told you wrong about Iraq; the Maliki goverment is not pro American, if anything they are leaning more toward Iran. So if you ask me, the conflict in Iraq was a big failure for the US. While Saddam was there, we didn't have to worry to much about the Iranians, he was keeping them in check. They hated each other, and it would have been hard for them to go nuclear without Saddam intervening. Now ,we run the risk of dealing with two Irans.

      • petergibby

Maliki is 1000 times more pro-us than Saddam was. Iraq wasn't keeping Iran in check - they were living under a no-fly zone and UN sanctions. Our goal was a friendly regime in Iraq and an end to Saddam and that's what we have now. Goal achieved.

Too many people wanting something for free. Too few with the character to work and be satisfied with what they have. Jealous of everybody else. Too many politians who want to play God and and get in everybody's business to "fix" things. Sick and can't work–sorry, but count on your family and neighbors. Why is public aid so bad versus neighbor helping neighbor - because it's easy to be a lazy bum when the help is anonimous. Can't do that when people you know try to help you.

We never considered that some rich person in another town should be the object of our envy and contempt and demand his money be given to us. Plus we had pride. The kind of pride where you'd rather eat beans than beg steak off the goverment. I'd have to be in pretty bad shape to ever consider taking a government handout. A church or neighbor yes because that's a willing gift. Plus I bet you'd have a hard time finding a truely poor person in the US - and when you did, I could show you a whole country of people who'd stand in line to take their place.

The dictatorships of China and Russia who repress their own people are not going to be involved.

Syrian military is not well equipped. T-72 tanks have lots of weaknesses (look at how Chechen destroyed them), Syrian air force has defunct airplanes, plus there are a lot of Syrians who will defect from military after a no-fly zone according to high ranking defectors.

There has to be a coalition of the willing like in Kosovo and Bosnia.

If it's so easy to go in and take action, why has no other government done it either? There may be no perfect solution. Yes, people are dying. People are always dying in Mideast violence. We have to decide what will help, and what will just inflame mideast hatred of us. I believe action is warranted. But the president has intelligence we don't, so let's be slow to wag our fingers.

Countries like Spain, France and the Dutch republic helped America.

Yes the fighting was done by revolutionaries, but they did get a lot of equipment from those countries.

USA's economic problem is going to be solved soon, Obama is creating millions of jobs already.

No one is calling for American boots, but arming the opposition is an option. And no they won't turn on you later, in Afghanistan, most of the Mujahideen were pro-American.

Idrees, stop comparing the alliance between western nations with any co-operation between the west and any muslim country, which is consumed by ideological and religious hatred for the west. Even after America helped Kosovo, one of its own attacked American soldiers in German soil. We hear that Osama Bin Laden was a created by American when they intervened in Afghanistan during the incursion of the Soviet Union. SO, it appears that anytime America intervenes in the affairs of a muslim, something evil is birthed. Any lesson learned so far? Personnal story : I once saw an adolescent defending a small guy from being beaten by another teen. He was suspended and punished by his parents for that.

He did the right thing, yet he was punished at the beginning. At the end, people realized that the bully was the bad one and he received many thanks and goodwill.

Have to disagree with the article. It's a horrific situation, but we need the backing of a coalition of countries and a solid plan of action if we're going to get involved.

It's not as if we can just go traipsing in with doctors and humanitarian aid and just do the right thing easily and Assad will just be fine with that and wave us in. Meanwhile all the other countries and half of this one will be complaining that we're trying to run the world and flouting the UN.

Yes let's help Syria put in a new government ... It worked out so well in Libya where Doctors without Borders recently pulled out of due to the sickening level of violence by the new "Transitional National Authority" (Doesn't that sound like a nice friendly group) that we helped install. Sources said they make Ghadafi look like a boy scout. oh why am i even ranting... syria is tied to Iran and Israel is enemies with Iran, so of course we'll end up intervening. Watch ... you'll see and you'll pay also. Ain't no way you or I can stop it. Here's one of many cites btw :http://news.yahoo.com/msf-quits-prisons-libya-city-over-torture-172819628.html

While it was not a US creation, Libya had a new governement in place externally organizing the overthrow and at least nominally preparred to govern. It was visibly organized and able to attract both financial and technical resources within the Gulf. Just look at the story in the NYT about how they commandeered the national telecoms network and moved the switching to Malta. The was not Chalabi formed mess, these were thoughtful passionate Libyans.

Until that exists in Syria, all we have is a mess to aviod.

I say U.S. has no business over there. Of course, Obama opened his big mouth and gave the rebels vocal support, and helped the same in Libya. The result is that 1) we look like wimps because we won't put are troops where our mouth is at, and 2) we have blood on our hands by encouraging the uprising so we can now watch as they are slaughtered. Obama went into Libya because he knew it would be "easy" – it would give him a "victory" without costing American lives. But he's too yellow to take on Syria, because it might actually be an all-out war.

We should have stayed completely out to begin with. Just quit buying oil from them and then it won't matter.

Bill Cllnton stood by and did nothing about genocide in Rwanda and Bosnia. That was evil and wrong but he got away with it. The time is ripe for the world to proactively deal with mass murder and do what needs to be done to stop it. Why?

    1. Its the right and moral thing to do.

    2. Once the world-wide value is that genocide and mass murder will not be condoned, the bad guys will get the messageand won't do it because they will know that doing it will be, at minimum,, mean they lose and may be killed or executed.

    3. The "good guys" need to learn that you can't stand idly by and condone evil.

Whatever the US does will likely be labeled the wrong decision on the Arab Street. So we should not worry about how it will be perceived so much as we look at what is the right thing to do. Get Saudi Arabia on our side and see if we get al-Assad to step and go into exile in Morocco or something. After that, I have no clue.

It is a rebellion happening in Syria. Or a revolution. Or a civil war – call it whatever way you like. The point is that it is not the first one, and certainly not the last one. Unless of course you believe that the world as we know it will end 2012/12/21.
So I do not think America or any other country should start intervening in any and every civil war and see it as a reason for bombing or occupying the country and resolving it all its way. Because that way will cost more long term all sides. Helping to avoid it – that would be good. Helping to find some peaceful solution – great, if anybody can do it! But helping one side to overthrow or suppress another – that is different animal altogether!

How can America not be involved in creating or supporting overseas conflicts, militarily!

Dont forget American politicians have to support their financiars. Help them sustain their businesses.

There are now more than 10,000 ex-Iraq defence contracfors who are out of work. And what about the military weaponry, tanks and fighter jet manufacturers back home? How are their bosses going to afford buying newer and bigger private jets ... if there is no war anywhere in the world.

It's an American culture. War is good for business. Good business for a few rich American multi millionaires.

So lets create more wars somewhere in the world. Nevermind who wins the fight, Important thing is the war machinery factories continue to churn our the guns, bullets and missiles, inciendiary bombs, chemical bombs, drones etc etc .

no. we were the laughing stock of the world when Bush was president. he was ignorant, mis-informed and squandered the good will of the world after 9-11 by invading Iraq for no good reason. maybe Fox news didn't tell you, but the rest of the world admires and respects Harvard-educated, cool-headed, thoughtful Obama. only in our backwards country do we make heroes out of the stupid and ignorant and turn on the intelligent people among us.

I strongly disagree. Bush was very respected and our country was respected. If you travel overseas, they don't really have strong opinions on either - they have their own lives to live and not worry about how much the respect the us presisdent. We did have a good reason to go into Iraq - that's why congress, the UN, and most of the American people supported it. We were successful with our goal in Iraq. Sure, you can point out negative things, but I can point out positive. It's called the confirmation bias and it keeps you from thinking accurately about things. We tend to only recognize the evidence that supports our idea of reality and ignore all else.

        February 10, 2012 at 1:11 am |
      • guest

i am confused about what you believe our goal was in Iraq, why we attacked them and how we accomplished that goal? the public supported Bush because they believed his lies about why we were going to Iraq, while we still hadn't cleaned up Afghanistan or gotten the people who actually attacked us. but you should know that millions of us did not approve of the Iraq invasion. Iraq was not involved in 9-11, in fact Al Queda hated Hussain because he didn't follow Sharia law. they never had weapons of mass destruction, and the Israeli govt told us so (they took out the nuclear plant long ago). we had no business starting a war to remove a dictator, any more than any other country would have the right to attack us to get rid of our leaders. and we left a country in crisis, which is shortly going to be taken over by the Shiite majority, who will align with Iran and impose Sharia law on the citizens. and I have traveled abroad and have never met anyone who admired Bush. Obama took out BinLadin and all the top people who actually were involved in terrorism, and he did so without destroying entire countries. case closed.

First off, I hope everyone saying we don't need to get involved is behind Ron Paul. He is a staunch backer of a non-intervention foreign policy... just saying. Secondly, if we went in there and helped these people, they would be planting IED's for our troops two weeks later and claim we are occupiers. Third, I am tired of doing stuff for these countries when one of the richest countries in the world, Saudi Arabia, stands there and lets all of this go on in their backyard. We need to get out of the middle east and let them work this stuff out themselves. We should take a simple policy that "We will stay our of your business, but if you attack us or our allies we will level your country" and be done with it.

Nice try, but there is a happy medium between being the world's policeman and Ron "Neville Chamberlain" Paul. There should be one guiding principle behind our foreign policy, and that's what's in the U.S.' best interest. A civil war in Syria, while very tragic, does not impact U.S. interests. A nuclear Iran, OTOH, would have a definite impact on U.S. interests. The problem is that we have expended a lot of capital on a needless war in Iraq and a criminally mishandled effort (by BOTH Bush and Obama) in Afghanistan, leaving both our armed forces and our credibility stretched to the limit.

These people do not stand for the values we stand for, these people will spit in our faces if they could, these people do not know the meaning of the words tolerance, respect and shame, not even among them, forget about Jews, Christians, Atheist, Mormons or ANY OTHER religious group.

Frankly we don't have the money to waste on any more such misadventures when we are $15T in debt.

Let the rich Arab countries foot the bill.

Our intervention in Iraq was a disaster, unseating the only secular leader in the Muslim world, and a huge bulwark against Iran with a govt. that is much more friendly to Iran than us! Forget the plight of the Iraqi Christians and other minorities!

We will never be sure of who will replace Al Assad. What if an even more fundamentalist govt. takes over just as it's happening all over N.Africa, to the utter glee of Islamic supporters like CNN's own Mr.FAREED ZAKARIA, Dean ObeidALLAH, Prof.Mohammed Ayoob, Juan Cole, Imam Rauf, Rashad Hassan and others.

"American moral purpose"? Don't fool yourself into believing that countries are moral agents. Countries serve their self-interests, they don't go out in search of the moral high ground. Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam have shown us what happens when we try to tell other people how they should live their lives. Let them decide for themselves, whether by ballots or bullets.

At a minimum send the people arms to have a fighting chance. It won't cause a civil war for that has already started..... The same methods are used to justify military attacks against Syria. Few years ago, the same western leaders justified attacks against Iraq and Afghanistan based on lies. Couple of months ago, it was Kadhafi. Today is the president of Syria. Iran will be served too after Syria.
Like Libya, Syria is being attacked by rebels armed by some western governments. The plan to destabilize the middle- East has been established a long time ago. Popular channels like CNN usually play a big role in developing a propaganda to prepare people's mind and make them accept military actions. The destablilization of the middle East and other countries has many goals. The first goal is to possess the natural resources of those countries/regions. The second goal is to strengthen or install political influence. Lastly and the most important one is the establishment of a New World order. However, other nations like Russia and maybe China are well aware of this plan. The country for now that is able to military resist against Israel, US and its allies is Russia. We know that Syria and Iran have strong relations with Russia. Installing western puppets in Syria and Iran will definitely weaken Russia and make it more vulnerable.
This is not about democracy or humanitarian actions. The same thing has been said about Libya but Nato killed thousands of civilians and installed radical muslims and members of Al-Qaida to power. The UN, US....etc are all condemning the Syrian government but it is ridiculous. Israel regularly kills Palestinians and ignores the UN's decisions. Why don't they condemn Israel? The US went to Iraq and killed thousands of civilians in spite of the UN disapproval. As I know, nobody condemned the US government. In Ivory Coast, the US and its allies backed Ouattara, a man who has blood of thousands of Ivorians on his hands. US and its allies promote democracy through words but support terrorism, genocides, crimes against humanity..etc through military and political actions. Those devilish and selfish actions may lead the world to another World War. The world will be a better place the day western civilizations/nations stop developing a superiority complex.
Obama is the biggest scam of the 21st century.

OBAMA must do something. that is obvious, BUT WHAT? if he attacks he draws fire from so many corners its like facing a minigun firing squad. if he waits he draws condemnation from his populace and allies. there is really no middle ground. this decision could cost him his political career/election/life. if america wants to keep walking the middle road it's starting look little bleak. have any of you thought about what he could do? not just jump in guns blazing, but actually come to terms with the rest of this rowdy world? is there a way out? tune in tomorrow and find out! jeez it's as bad a soap opera! how come Alassad doesn't ask for help from conventional allies? why is are we even bothering with a region that's outside of general way? because everybody should have a say in how their lives are run. what laws should govern how they live. they should not have to live in fear of their lives because some government/religion/ideal tells them they have to live that way and they think they have a better fairer way.is that wrong?if they are allowed no voice this is what happens they rebel. syria's current tactic is kill and cover-up.if they were in the right could that not come to the light? the fact that they are not tells enough. what we know is enough to act but what can we do when other forces can afford to wait?what can we do when those forces say "NO!! sit still! we have other plans!". we are coming real close to a tie breaker that could spell the future of mankind. we have brushed it. we have heard it's whisper. will it turn into a roar? who is good and who is evil? these are the waters that obama is currently treading. right now something brilliant from the areas where man first started to come together IE the middle east would help alot. in order to live in a world where man lives together in peace and passes their legacy to the stars we are asking for a miracle. for just how dire these times are for reference I'm an atheist! ireally don't want to go up in ash for someone elses beliefs. and i don't want anyone else dying for mine. but i'll fight for few a things in this world and peace between me and my neighbors is one of them.

American politicians see past the surface issue of the syrian killings, and understand the implications of military actions to syrian govermental allies intervention.

In short, we would like to do something to stop the killings ASAP, but we realize we cant fight off China, Russia, Iran and Syria all at the same time because we decided to bomb Syria for being bad. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

As far as I'm concerned, this article is useless. I can come up with a million evil things that Syria has done. This article a) completely fails to state any principle, whatsoever, that can be used to judge whether or not we should intervene in a particular country and b) completely fails to mention a single downside, a single negative repercussion that might arise for the US or for Syria or for anybody because of intervention.

In Syria people took weapons in hands and are being killed by Government and Kosovo was not like that.If you tok weapons in hand against your government then you are no longer innocent. If people protesting at Wall Street took weapons in hand, US government will also kill them. Person protesting with weapons is always a terrorist.

In Iraq people were not protesting because US government did not realize earlier what is the best way to de-stabilize a country before attacking. Syrians are protesting because American made this policy and US government did not realize this tactic for Iraq. There was no American policy for protests in Iraq so there were no protests in Iraq and in Syria USA made the policy of protests so people are protesting. Muslims are not so clever. In Libya USA tried the policy of bombing many times but was not successful but the policy of using their own people is learned by Americans in Afghanistan so they used this in Libya and now in Syria. See what they did in Afghanistan to remove Taliban government easily.

With one war finished and another in the draw down stages, it would be a real violation of valid judgement for the USA to intervene militarilly in Syria. Haven't we learned a lesson from two wars begun by a President who didn't know when to mind his own business and keep quiet? Now that our economy is improving, the last thing we need is another big military adventure urged on by another bunch of trigger happ flag waving Bubbas. Whatever good is happening to our economy would sink in a heartbeat if we got involved in another war.....guaranteed.

Call the other heads of state in this world, and ask them "who is in". A multi national force needs to stop the dictator's murdering of innocent men, women and children immediately! dont even think about getting involved in Syria Obama. We did the same in Libya and Iraq and they hate us for it. What is other arab countries doing? Why is it always up to America to do things when they hate us so much? Its their internal problem let them deal with it. We have our own problems.

I believe we should intervene, but not at the moment. In order to be a benefit to other countries than we ourselves must be able to support our self. Perhaps after the recession lifts more and we have a solid foundation back, than we’ll have the money to support our troops leaving again.
Now, I’m not saying that an immense amount of troops are going to be sent out to Syria just like Iraq, BUT, I am saying that it will cost a lot of money. The world runs on money, war, and the desire to harness all the power possible. President al-Assad has a fear that he won’t be able to keep his power for long. Little does he know that attacking his own country in such a manner is actually the exact thing that’s going to tear him down.

I say we help them but differently than we've ever done before. Let's not help them rebuild. Let's not help them educate their children or establish a decent government. What we need to do is F@#UCK them up beyond belief–more unimaginable than anyone can fathom. Let's destroy every building within a 20 mile radius of where their top leaders are. This way, people will actually respect our POWER again. That's fine if you want to hold on to some ancient dictatorship but if you attack your people or push the US, you will see our real ruthless power!

LET'S UNLOAD HELL ON THEM THEN LEAVE IN TWO DAYS!!

Let's coddle them and send in our troops for 5 years, rebuild them and get thousands of our soldiers killed, 100s of thousands of their men, women and children and spend billions upon billions of your money. Either that or we send a message and don't have to worry about other wars for 50 years or killing millions through attrition like we have been. Take your pick.

Excellent analysis and i concur completely. Perhaps, we can await regional powers like Turkey and Saudi Arabia to declare their open support for the SRA and civilian patriots and annouince they will begin arming and supplying them. Thbat will give the U.S. and Europe the "go ahead" to join in if some countries directly involved take the lead,,,

From the article comparing Syria and Libya: "How does Syria not meet that standard?"

    1. Libya has oil – Syria does not.
    2. Ghadaffi was stupid enough to ANNOUNCE that he was going to rub out a city. al Assad has not.
    3. Syria has a mutal defense pact with Iran. Libya did not.
    4. Syria has terrain that makes it more difficult to attack than Libya was.

I'm probably missing a few other differences, but those are pretty key.

WHAT? We must do NOTHING for Syria... Why should we do something to benefit Syria when hundreds of civilians danced, cheered, clapped, sang and burned American flags in Damascus while the World Trade Center was collapsing with 3000 people inside... SCREW YOURSELF SYRIA!
For those of you who think it is our obligation to intervene and help the people in Syria, I have news for you... We will spend the money, sacrifice American lives, put ourselves in the middle of yet another worthless war, and guess what we will get out of it? NOTHING.

These people do not stand for the values we stand for, these people will spit in our faces if they could, these people do not know the meaning of the words tolerance, respect and shame, not even among them, forget about Jews, Christians, Atheist, Mormons or ANY OTHER religious group.

For them we Americans are just a group of infidels and imperialist who deserve the worst. So asking us for help is quite ridiculous. I have nothing against the Islam or Muslims, but they do have a lot against us
and sadly their mentality is backwards: you are with us or you are against us... they do not believe in a society we all can co-exist and live based on our own beliefs.
And it is sad, very sad indeed, that as of today we still have people in our country who forget things so quick and who don't realize the threat that this represents as more and more and more of them keep coming here.

Very good points you have. Bottom line, the middle east would rather see their innocent children die at the hands of their own rather than foreign "westerners" help them. These people have no respect for life and there values are not the same as ours. We cheerish our babies and see our children as our future and want the best for them. Unfortunately, they use their young boys as accessories to warfare and we all know what they think of women and girls.

I am absolutely sickened by what is happening in Syria. I've never had much of an interest in foreign affairs, until now. What is happening over there is devastating and horrible. It is the United States' MORAL OBLIGATION to step in and help, especially when Syria's innocent civilians are BEGGING and PLEADING for help. How can we deny them, or turn a blind eye? That is not who we are. Maybe we shouldn't always involve ourselves in certain foreign affairs, but I think this is definitely a situation where U.S. involvement is NECESSARY to save thousands of lives. Or, at the very least, we should hire an assassin to take out the dictator. SOMETHING needs to be done. Innocent people - EVEN CHILDREN - are being slaughtered like animals over there. It's so easy to shrug it off as you sit there in your comfy chair, when people over there are going through HELL. I can't IMAGINE what they are going through right now.

If America doesn't do something, then I will be even MORE ashamed to call myself an American. And SHAME ON YOU, CHINA AND RUSSIA. You callous pieces of trash! How can you not step in and do something? The blood of the innocent Syrians killed because of your refusal to get involved is on YOUR hands!!!

    February 9, 2012 at 10:37 pm | Reply

Since you admit never having paid much attention to foreign affairs, then you likely are unaware of many related things.

People want us to hit Syria, because Syria and Iran are allied. This is an excuse to get us into a wider war, and you're taking the bait. Some want a war with Iran in order to keep them from building a nuclear weapon. They want a nuclear weapon because they need it to destroy Israel, which they need to do to bring about the Mahdi, or 12th Imam – it's nuts, but it is the whole purpose of the Iranian regime. Self-preservation is not an instinct they possess; they're happy to martyr millions of Iranians to do this.

In short, this is a tinderbox, and people like you, running on emotion instead of reason, are the equivalent of flipping lit matches at it – thousands, maybe even tens of thousands will die if we do nothing. If we act, it will set off a chain of events where MILLIONS could die. And people who called for intervention would likely be ignorant of the fact it was their fault. YOUR fault.

That is why so many of us are not pulling our hair out over this. It's a shame – but it's not OUR shame, and it is not our problem.

From a political and economical standpoint, the best thing to do is stay out of it. From a Christian point of view, we're supposed to go kill a few bad people to save a lot of innocent ones. God trumps power and fiscal issues everytime. It is someone's duty to humanity to help those people. To ask "Why the U.S. everytime?" is a great question to be debated AFTER something is done to save thousands of lives, but not while they are being slaughtered in the streets and in their homes by their own government.

    February 9, 2012 at 11:17 pm | Reply
    • Rich

Actually, advocating killing a few bad people is NOT the Christian perspective. It's "Thou Shalt Not Kill", not "Thou Shalt Only Kill the Bad Guys".

It's faulty logic like yours that causes some folks to do things like murder abortion doctors – after all, it's taking one life that is responsible for taking hundreds or thousands more. One person's bad guy is another's good guy.

It is also worth noting that the Christian minority, along with many other minorities, would likely be slaughtered or subjugated if the rebels (mostly Sunni Muslim) win. There IS such a thing as a fight between two bad guys. When two bullies fight – let them have at it and don't pick sides.

To all those collectively who have stated that the US should avoid involvement in Syria, or any country whose citizens are being persecuted/executed, I offer the following. The US and its closest, reliable, and responsible allies have no other choice but to defend the rights and lives of the persecuted because it is at the core values of who we are, and too many other nations are either led by the tyrants who are the root of the problem or lack the courage to protect those human beings who are the victims of tyranny. Russia, China, Iran and other similar brutal oligarchies are the enemies of our species, and are too fond of torturing their own citizens to be depended upon to protect humanity.

The Muslim brotherhood considers Americans infidels. They will come back and kill us later....just like Egypt, just like Libya...the rebels are not are allies they are our enemies.
The question is why would we help people who have disdain for us by changing from one hostile regime to another.
If the people of Syria were grateful for our help, and we helped them to a democratic society and they became our allies that is one thing. But the rebels are also our enemy and if we save them they will eventually kill us.

When (not IF!!) the USA throws open the union and excepts other countries as partners what will people say about those countries wishing to join us? that we conquered them? that we coerced them? NO!! they will say thatthey are cowards who wish to tie them selves to our skirt strings.
But that is also untrue. they just wish for peace and prosperity that other countries cant really give them. and they will make the usa both stronger and weaker for it. the other countries will condemn the us for it but cant really do anything about it because they are willing and freely joining our union.

the whole iran/isreal problem is really quite simple. ask isreal if it would like to join the union and lets see the arab world stew on that for a while. I garantee that they all will think twice about attacking isreal and when they do (not IF!!) they will have our boot up their ass and their people rebelling so bad that we could move right on in with the peoples blessing.

as to the whole syria problem: Do you honestly think they want america there? we come in, kick assad to the curb, then leave, leaving militants in charge of the country. What's changed? who did we help? the people? the terrorists? they will put people in power who may or may not hold onto the power we died to provide them and we'll probably have to deal with their problems for the forseeable future. I say ask iraq if they would like to join us as a state. ask egypt! ask libya! if they so no then pull out any us charity or aid and give that to people who actually want us there. responibility is a good thing but not if weakens us to our enemies. and thats what all this foriegn aid is really doing to us.

I understand everyone has a reason to keep pushing towards ww3. Well if that's all the human spirit really has left, then I can't stop you then. Violence is just a path down to more violence. If you really wanna help these people out, sign some peace refugee thing where you can take those people out. If the number is crazy, like 90 % of the population, then, well, you have to go in. But via the UN. If russia and China didnt budge then, Id be very surprised. Remember, we all want people to have the basic freedoms we enjoy, but realistically they arent living in that system.

the problem with your premise is this: if syria (or any other country for that matter) would accept us or anybody else doing that (the whole refugee release thing ) they would have no power base but other people who want power. trust that scenario to end the world faster than ww3 would. both sides would end with so much internal and external fighting that war would become the only industry in the world. mainly refugees vs tyrants. and then the refugees would be open to tyrants from the inside because the non fighters would be in trouble because they have no will to fight. one of the things that war proves is that we will not lie down and take tyrants.

    Here is a simple solution!

I disagree with what has happened over the years as any other american, But NOONE wants to see innocent people die just becasue their presidents wants them too, it would be like our president doing that to us, It wouldn't be allowed to go on, He would be killed!

So simple but long solution, Shoot asaad, Then let them all figure it out. If you take him out, No more orders would be to kill, If the next president called for more killings, Then I guess our hands would be tied. I understand all that has happened and what is going on, But some one with mass power SHOULD NOT be allowed to kill innocent people just casue they can.

Long story short, Sometimes the gift of life is worth more then power to anyone. Help them and defuse the problem and let the people figure out what is next. I am aginst children being killed over power, They didn't ask for it, Nor should it be allowed. UN step it up!

We've seen in both Afghanistan and Iraq that American lives mean next to nothing! I'm tired of spending our youth for those that hate us and want to see us destroyed so let those in the region help fight against Asad. It it is given to them, then it's worth nothing in the end. They MUST fight and die for what they believe in!!!

Syria is about Israeli-US funding of armed, sniper, forces, along with bribes to higher military officers, in a typical coup scenario. Billions of dollars stolen from the US taxpayer during the bailouts is now surfacing in funding these "Arab Spring" rebellions. The irony of the Syrian "Facebook" protests is that they were set up by foreign intel (US-Israel) to draw the innocents out, and then gun them down with Mossad snipers at exact locations. It was a planned slaughter. Only the Jewish controlled CNN type media is repeating the lies that the Syrian casualties are Assad's fault. Nobody, no one in the US general public of any education, believes the Jewish CNN lies. We all know. The Syrian, like Libyan debacle is the result of billions of dollars of US taxpayer money spent to slaughter the Syrian civilians and claim it is Syrians doing it. Just as the Bolsheviks were funded by NYC bankers. We've seen this all before, from Nicaragua, to Vietnam, to Libya, and now to Syria. US-Israeli funding of corrupt and naive elements within the target nation and killing the innocents.

Syria is about Mossad and US snipers killing innocent civilians. It is a foreign funded civil war. The Billions of US tax money which disappeared in the bailouts, is now appearing, as funding these Libyan, Egypt, Syrian "rebellions". Everybody knows this. Get some Israeli Jews and say "want to go kill some Arabs", come with us to Syria, we'll set you up on rooftops, we'll organize the Facebook "gatherings", you just shoot them.

Something has to be done about the Syrian government, but why must it always be the US that leads the way? There are many other democratic countries on this planet yet none of them have the guts to stand up for anything, but themselves. If we have to then supply the UN with arms and then have an international organization intervene. And if we must intervene ourselves then lets do it right. Fly over bombings of the government facilities. We have plenty of technology to wage war and keep our troops here at home. We can waste bombs, but do not throw the lives of our troops away for these people, because they would never do the same in return.

A good nuclear war between China and USA over Arab oil would be a good thing. It would wise up the young chickenhawks fast. Suddenly Israel and its gulags wouldn't be so interesting. In a war between China and USA, China would destroy the USA with nukes and China would still have hundreds of millions of people to carry on the victory and rule over Arab oil. Bring it on.

Why don't you stop and think a second about what the consequences could be of arming the Free Syrian Army. We could be inadvertently arming outside terrorists, we could be simply adding to the bloodshed (because, contrary to popular opinion, the opposition HAS unnecessarily fought back in many cases and murdered government officials), and we could be contributing to a bloody sectarian war that has already spilled over into Lebanon. Think about what you are suggesting: in order to bring peace to Syria, we are sending in more arms. That is what is truly hypocritical.

The best thing we can do right now is continue to pressure Russia into working out some sort of compromise with the al-Assad regime. Peace will never come to Syria until BOTH sides cease the violence. Further, a legitimate and stable government will never be formed until this peace has been achieved.

The world should stop playing with this area of the world, and get deadly serious. First you cut of the head of the snake and take out any potential nuclear threat. The whole world knows if you top Iran,, Hezbollah, Hamas and then Syria will fall. That's a long way to cleaning up that part of the world, and whilst the world is busy with this exercise, we could turn a blind to the Israelis cleaning up their own back yard. This could be accomplished with conventional weapons, but many of them, a real boon to American manufacturing jobs. Who knows, it may even kick-start the world economy. Win, win?

China needs the Arab oil. Israel is against the Arabs. China needs to step in and clean out the Jews of Israel, really clean it well as you say. With the US $15 Trillion dollars in debt and the GDP leveling off, China will have the manpower to destroy the Jews of Israel and bring lasting peace to the Arab oil region.

All I have to say is arming Syria sounds alot like the whole middle east thing we find ourselves in. We have them weapons when they were fighting the soviets and now the very weapons we gave them are being used against us. We would have to be stupid to do it again. I believe it is our job to stop stuff like this anywhere in the world, but when it is totally impossible or highly improbable our FIRST goal needs to become top priority. Our 1st goal is to protect AMERICANS.

Sad to think that you are apart of a country that will just let this thing go on but........reality sucks sometimes and I have a bad feeling that if we helped it would somehow bite us anyway.

The radical left (move on) has hammered Obama far more than the Republicans or any other group on this issue with his record of not ending the Iraqi and Afghani wars immediately as a campaign pledge that he broke in the first few days of his presidency! Further more, the fact that he started 2 new conflicts in Pakistan and Libya without congressional approval pretty much sealed his fate with many of these supporters! ...Obama can not afford to continue to compromise which he currentl does now on a regular basis further damaging hs ties with the left!

There's no sentiment for further involvement and loss of our greatest treasure (people) over sovereign states inability to govern themselves. Our national interests lie in free trade (ie flow of oil, natural resources) not in nation building. Other than that the peoples of the world need to sort out their divisions through the United Nations. We the People would be far greater off if we defensibly prepare for the inevitable mass conflict and its aftermath rather than trying to keep a lid on the boiling cauldron of our overpopulated world.

The only thing America should do is kill them all. Someone farts and the price of oil goes up, their sons want a raise in their million dollar allowance and the price of oil goes up. Get us off the dependence of foreign oil and watch them kill each other.

Am no American but I believe this view expressed by Danielle Pletka is absolutely ludicrous. So much more you condemn Obama for not taking action on Syria. I doubt if you have the slightest idea what international diplomacy means. You authoritatively suggest that the West is wasting time siting round the table dialoguing while thousands of lives are been slaughtered. This is not a Mussollini or Hiltler ear where despots would wake up one day and decide to occupy another country. This is why the UN was founded. Hence, when you understand that, clean your dirty mouth before you come back and we would consider your opinion. I can bet you are there living in the US as one of it's citizens once a refugee of a war-torn country, yet you have the effrontery to talk bad of that Great Nation. Doubt you also know the story of how Americans saved Iran from the hands of Iraq and the consequent betrayal by same Iran who is now developing nuclear war heads, biting the American fingers that saved them from eternal destruction. Please next time share your opinion with your family in your bedroom and give people with intellectual capability and unbiased minds space to share their opinion on this platform.

western intervention in Muslim countries simply does not work, the only way they work is the 91 Gulf War model, get in,crush the enemy, get out, leave it to who ever to pick up the peices. or the initial 2001 Afhanistan model, arm youre enemies enemy, and let them cut them out, with close air support. Occupations only give the terroists time to turn public opinion against you. Just like on here,Al-Queida claimed responsibility for the majority of the civilian casulties in Iraq, but you still have misinformation spreaders saying that "American slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people in Afgh and Iraq",that is our thanks for our sacrifices!!!

Somolia and Iraq tell us we cant win when we try to help muslims,Afghanistan was not intervention,it was a search for retribution and justice,is the right of a sovern nation to return fire when it is attacked, although in hindsight we should have been lookin in Pakistan all along, how much do you want to bet that Pakastani Troops escorted Osama and is entourouge out of Tora Bora,to his new house they built for him in Pakistan. But anyway, moving on.

we didnt intervene in Iran in 09,or in Georgia in 06 when Russia attacked them to demonstrate the penalty for trying to join NATO,and we are in worse financial and domestic shape now!!,and another war would put us in the same economical shape has the USSR was right before it collapsed!!,and even though we couldnt afford it,the draft would have to be renacted to increase the size of our military to late WW2 numbers!!!

it all boils down to this, you dont run off to help youre neighbor put out a grease fire, when youre own house is burning down!!

and if you must have intervention,Look at all the tragedy and suffering that the drug lords are inflicting right next door in Mexico,I bet they would be surprised to see US Marines taking the place of the Border Patrol. An intervention in Mexico would effect the immigration problem(they wouldnt cross illegally if they had jobs and security at home),and give the US a more stable ally, not to mention make it safer for US college students to travel to cancun without the risk of being kidnapped for ransom.

If there was oil in Syria like Iraq then USA and the NATO will care about the Syrian people and democracy.
USA doesn't do any thing to save the lives of the innocent Syrians who are killed every day by the Syrian regime; because Israel wants Assad to stay.
Shame on all civilized world who witness the killing of children without trying to stop the criminals.
Assad should go now before he leads the region to civil war.

Civilized world ?? Have you forgotten how many innocent people and children were killed in Iraq due to US Bombing and even due to the sanctions before Bush Jr attacked Iraq. Shame on you for using civilized world for the west. Fighting against your Government is a terrorist activity, remember prophet Mohammed never fought to people of Mecca when he was living in Mecca in early days. If you are living in a country you cannot take weapons in hand. Wall street protesters will also face the same fate as faced by Syrians anti government terrorists if they take weapons in hand.
