Obama must do something tangible for Syria

Before joining AEI, she served for ten years as a senior professional staff member for the Near East and South Asia on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. By Danielle Pletka – Special to CNN

Obama administration officials have labeled the United Nations’ failure to act on Syria as “outrageous” and a “travesty”.  But that’s about all they’ve done about Syrian dictator Basher el Assad’s wanton murder of thousands of innocent Syrians.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the failure of last weekend’s weak Security Council resolution, more than 400 Syrians were killed in ruthless assaults.  They had nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.  Syrian opposition leaders have begged the international community to act, to do more than convene in contact groups and make rounds on the diplomatic circuit.  But their begging has fallen on deaf ears.

Why care about Syria?

Let’s again rehearse the simple reasons:

– Syria is the soft underbelly of Iran, Tehran’s most important ally, conduit for arms and cash to terrorists.

– Syria has been home to and sponsor of terrorists that have killed American soldiers and non-combatants in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Israel, in the West Bank and more.

– Syria was likely behind the murder of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon, an act for which it has paid no price

– Syria has been the godfather to Iran’s terrorist creature, Hezbollah, which has degraded and exploited the Lebanese state (among many other sins).

-Syria’s despotic government has murdered thousands of its own people and will continue to do so until Bashar al-Assad has secured once again his dominion over the Syrian people.

A unique confluence of American moral purpose and America’s strategic interest argue for intervention in Syria. It’s time to do something tangible.

It’s time to start arming the Free Syrian Army, convening the disparate factions of the Syrian opposition and coaching them toward an interim government. It’s time to create safe zones along the border with Turkey and humanitarian corridors to get there.  It’s time to protect those corridors from the air with a limited no-fly zone and establish safe cities.  And it’s time to do all that without benefit of a Security Council resolution, because let’s admit it, the Security Council’s moral authority is nil with Russia and China in permanent seats.

It’s time to begin to work with Turkey and coax the Islamist Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan into a position as moral leader in his region.   He may be taking Turkey down a dangerous path, but at the moment, he’s willing to do the right thing on Syria.  Let’s double down on that.

It’s in the U.S. interest; it’s also in Israel’s interest, and worth their while to arrange themselves on the side of Turkey and the Arab League against the loathsome al-Assad.  That doesn’t mean coming out publicly and intervening in Arab affairs, but it does mean beginning to have quiet talks behind the scenes with interested parties.  Indeed, it is fascinating that Israel, which has found itself in weird concert with the Arabs on Libya, Iran and Syria, has failed to exploit that position to improve its regional relations in any way.  One might almost think Israel an indifferent observer to ouster of al-Assad, a sworn enemy.

Syria will have a post-Assad future.  That future could be in the hands of Qatari backed Salafis, Saudi-backed Islamists, or the Western world could have a say.  Sitting on the sidelines will ensure that we have as little as possible.

Here is what President Barack Obama said about Libya in May of last year:

“To brush aside America's responsibility as a leader and – more profoundly – our responsibilities to our fellow human beings under such circumstances would have been a betrayal of who we are. Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as president, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action."

How does Syria not meet that standard?  For shame on Obama for his hypocrisy, his indifference, and his abdication of American moral and strategic leadership.

The United Nations should help with U.S. doing our part. The world should be poking Russia and China who are holding up world help to Syria.

We need to do something now. If we dont step in even more innocent people will die. How many more deaths over in syria will it take to get us to do something about it. Last time i have heard it was at 6000. It is probably more now.

    Here is a simple solution!

I disagree with what has happened over the years as any other american, But NOONE wants to see innocent people die just becasue their presidents wants them too, it would be like our president doing that to us, It wouldn't be allowed to go on, He would be killed!

So simple but long solution, Shoot asaad, Then let them all figure it out. If you take him out, No more orders would be to kill, If the next president called for more killings, Then I guess our hands would be tied. I understand all that has happened and what is going on, But some one with mass power SHOULD NOT be allowed to kill innocent people just casue they can.

Long story short, Sometimes the gift of life is worth more then power to anyone. Help them and defuse the problem and let the people figure out what is next. I am aginst children being killed over power, They didn't ask for it, Nor should it be allowed. UN step it up!

"The tree of Liberty must be fertilized from time to time with the blood of Patriots!" Let those people fight and die for what they want, not our USA troops. We've seen in both Afghanistan and Iraq that American lives mean next to nothing! I'm tired of spending our youth for those that hate us and want to see us destroyed so let those in the region help fight against Asad. It it is given to them, then it's worth nothing in the end. They MUST fight and die for what they believe in!!!

Syria is about Israeli-US funding of armed, sniper, forces, along with bribes to higher military officers, in a typical coup scenario. Billions of dollars stolen from the US taxpayer during the bailouts is now surfacing in funding these "Arab Spring" rebellions. The irony of the Syrian "Facebook" protests is that they were set up by foreign intel (US-Israel) to draw the innocents out, and then gun them down with Mossad snipers at exact locations. It was a planned slaughter. Only the Jewish controlled CNN type media is repeating the lies that the Syrian casualties are Assad's fault. Nobody, no one in the US general public of any education, believes the Jewish CNN lies. We all know. The Syrian, like Libyan debacle is the result of billions of dollars of US taxpayer money spent to slaughter the Syrian civilians and claim it is Syrians doing it. Just as the Bolsheviks were funded by NYC bankers. We've seen this all before, from Nicaragua, to Vietnam, to Libya, and now to Syria. US-Israeli funding of corrupt and naive elements within the target nation and killing the innocents.

Syria is about Mossad and US snipers killing innocent civilians. It is a foreign funded civil war. The Billions of US tax money which disappeared in the bailouts, is now appearing, as funding these Libyan, Egypt, Syrian "rebellions". Everybody knows this. Get some Israeli Jews and say "want to go kill some Arabs", come with us to Syria, we'll set you up on rooftops, we'll organize the Facebook "gatherings", you just shoot them.

Something has to be done about the Syrian government, but why must it always be the US that leads the way? There are many other democratic countries on this planet yet none of them have the guts to stand up for anything, but themselves. If we have to then supply the UN with arms and then have an international organization intervene. And if we must intervene ourselves then lets do it right. Fly over bombings of the government facilities. We have plenty of technology to wage war and keep our troops here at home. We can waste bombs, but do not throw the lives of our troops away for these people, because they would never do the same in return.

Instead of fooling in Syria's problems, we need to take care of some of our own. The only solution for this country is to start putting corporate criminals in jail. Their rapacious greed and fraud is bringing this country into 3rd world status. Rmoney would exalt them and finish the destruction.

A good nuclear war between China and USA over Arab oil would be a good thing. It would wise up the young chickenhawks fast. Suddenly Israel and its gulags wouldn't be so interesting. In a war between China and USA, China would destroy the USA with nukes and China would still have hundreds of millions of people to carry on the victory and rule over Arab oil. Bring it on.

Why don't you stop and think a second about what the consequences could be of arming the Free Syrian Army. We could be inadvertently arming outside terrorists, we could be simply adding to the bloodshed (because, contrary to popular opinion, the opposition HAS unnecessarily fought back in many cases and murdered government officials), and we could be contributing to a bloody sectarian war that has already spilled over into Lebanon. Think about what you are suggesting: in order to bring peace to Syria, we are sending in more arms. That is what is truly hypocritical.

The best thing we can do right now is continue to pressure Russia into working out some sort of compromise with the al-Assad regime. Peace will never come to Syria until BOTH sides cease the violence. Further, a legitimate and stable government will never be formed until this peace has been achieved.

The world should stop playing with this area of the world, and get deadly serious. First you cut of the head of the snake and take out any potential nuclear threat. The whole world knows if you top Iran,, Hezbollah, Hamas and then Syria will fall. That's a long way to cleaning up that part of the world, and whilst the world is busy with this exercise, we could turn a blind to the Israelis cleaning up their own back yard. This could be accomplished with conventional weapons, but many of them, a real boon to American manufacturing jobs. Who knows, it may even kick-start the world economy. Win, win?

China needs the Arab oil. Israel is against the Arabs. China needs to step in and clean out the Jews of Israel, really clean it well as you say. With the US $15 Trillion dollars in debt and the GDP leveling off, China will have the manpower to destroy the Jews of Israel and bring lasting peace to the Arab oil region.

All I have to say is arming Syria sounds alot like the whole middle east thing we find ourselves in. We have them weapons when they were fighting the soviets and now the very weapons we gave them are being used against us. We would have to be stupid to do it again. I believe it is our job to stop stuff like this anywhere in the world, but when it is totally impossible or highly improbable our FIRST goal needs to become top priority. Our 1st goal is to protect AMERICANS.

Sad to think that you are apart of a country that will just let this thing go on but........reality sucks sometimes and I have a bad feeling that if we helped it would somehow bite us anyway.

The radical left (move on) has hammered Obama far more than the Republicans or any other group on this issue with his record of not ending the Iraqi and Afghani wars immediately as a campaign pledge that he broke in the first few days of his presidency! Further more, the fact that he started 2 new conflicts in Pakistan and Libya without congressional approval pretty much sealed his fate with many of these supporters! ...Obama can not afford to continue to compromise which he currentl does now on a regular basis further damaging hs ties with the left!

There's no sentiment for further involvement and loss of our greatest treasure (people) over sovereign states inability to govern themselves. Our national interests lie in free trade (ie flow of oil, natural resources) not in nation building. Other than that the peoples of the world need to sort out their divisions through the United Nations. We the People would be far greater off if we defensibly prepare for the inevitable mass conflict and its aftermath rather than trying to keep a lid on the boiling cauldron of our overpopulated world.

The only thing America should do is kill them all. Someone farts and the price of oil goes up, their sons want a raise in their million dollar allowance and the price of oil goes up. Get us off the dependence of foreign oil and watch them kill each other.
