Las Malvinas(the Falkland Islands) legally belong to Argentina but the British seized them illegally in 1833 in direct violation to the Monroe Doctorine. In 1982, Agentina tried to take them back unsuccessfully, being both outgunned and outnumbered by the British. The very greed of the British knows no end!!!
The Falkland Islands (1776) legally belong to the Falklander Islanders as a UK Overseas Territory, but the Argentinians seized them illegally in 1828-33 and then again in 1982, the latter in direct contravention of the United Nations Chartar Article 25. In 1833 and 1982, Argentina tried to conquest them unsuccessfully, being outclassed though superior in number to the British. The feelings of victimisation and manipulation of facts by the Argentinians knows no end, as does the disregard of the 'rights to self-determination' spirit of the UN!!!
Take out the map, show it to nationals apart from the British or angentineans, show where the two countries are located, then show where the islands are. I tell you, NO ONE in the whole world thinks the folklands belong to the UK. They belonged to Argentina from the first place, then the UK government took them over. Let's face it. who had to most colonies in the world? Who still sends troops to afghanistan, Iraq and countries that are oil rich un the recently? Uncomfortable but the truth should be told. Like I said, NO SINGLE COUNTRY thinks they should belong to the UK – it's only that the UK is illegitimately taking advantage of its economic power as a developed country. Period.

trver, so by that rational does England belong to France? Does Cuba belong to the US? The people of the Falklands have stated they want to remain a British Overseas territory. As with all other former British colonies they have been given a choice of independence – and they chose to remain – however Argentina do not respect the islanders wishes . Gibraltar is a good example of another country that voted to remain a part of British overseas territory – I suggest you look it up. Better re-check your facts.

Yup!!!! Argentina 0 British 10 They lost since 1982. Are they complaining again????
The Monroe Doctrine was never a joint statement nor declaration by both countries.
British foreign minister George Canning proposed to the American government that a joint warning should be given however that was never the case and the Monroe Doctrine stands as a US police only. Which only included the Western Hemisphere.
The Falkland Islands belong to the people who inhabit them, since they never had a native population. If the islanders wish to remain British, then so be it.
If Argentina wants to impose its own culture and system on an unwilling populace, then to H3LL with Buenos Aires. As an American who truly values the principles on which this country was founded, I believe in freedom and defending the weak; for this reason, I support the Falkland Islanders. I may disagree with much of Britain's laws and customs, but when a PEACEFUL territory's residents say, "Leave me be," I gladly follow suit.
The Falklands Islanders are not sponsors of terrorism, are not oppressing a native population, and are not doing anything that violates Argentina's sovereignty. This South American behemoth is the eighth largest nation in the world. If it wants to bully its far smaller neighbor and perpetrate a conquest (to distract from internal affairs), then it deserves to be forced to submission through all-out war.
There have never been Falkland "Indians." Argentina has no more of a right to rule the islands than Britain does. Therefore, the will of the current islanders themselves must be obeyed.

Dear George Patton.
Sorry to say but the Argentinians never possessed the Falkland Island. You even use a French word to define the Falklands. The Spanish name, Islas Malvinas, is derived from the French name, Îles Malouines.
The Falklands don't belong to UK, don't belong to Argentina but they belong to the people of the Falkland. The people of the Falkland want to remain British. End of story.
what you are saying is not true at all.
france occupied first, but soon recognised the islands as spanish.
the latter kept the name. they may have found it nice!
spain controled the islands and argentina inherited them.
the current british colony started in 1833 by force, removing the argentine population who now live displanted in buenos aires, like the inhabitants of the british colony of diego garcia do in mauritius, after uk didnt care about their determination. business is business.
being them a bunch of englishmen introduced by force moving the previous people out, the self determination principle is overruled by the principle of territorial integrity. the un regognises such a thing, and declarates the issue a bilateral conflict. this means that if the islanders are partisans, they cannot referee also. that is why it mandates just argentina and the uk to resume negotiations and it contemplates no third parties.
The british did not remove an Argentine population. They told an Argentine Military unit to leave and they did. The civilians, the leave of which had asked for British approval to go there in the first place, stayed.

1. Argentina didn't even exist in 1833.
2. They were named the Falkland Islands in 1594, many years before you borrowed the Las Malvinas name from the French.
3. You talk of the French settlement that gave it up to Spain? A British settlement existed at the same time 1765. The French left and ultimately so did we over a decade later however we left with the land legally claimed.
4. In 1833 when the first permanent settlement was made by the Brits the land was occupied by what amounted to pirates (Vernet) who had a small settlement that was destroyed by the Americans in reprisal for acts against their shipping. Some of them were asked to leave by the Brits and duly did.
5. The people of the Falklands wish to be British and self determination is a legally enshrined right in democracy. No matter how much Argentina shouts about this it will not change. They are the imperialist aggressors and we will not be bullied!

The Argentinean president is just trying to deviate attention to the mess there country is , Using the Argentina Pride in order to gain support . The island belong to the people who live there .
True, the Falklands belong to the approx. 3.000 people who live there. The main national income stems from tourism, export of squids and oil. The economy is booming with zero debt and high savings. As the region has oil and gas, Britain will defend its claim and send work forces to keep the islands afloat. The islanders face a shortage of labour and Britain can bring unemployment down at home..
The Monroe Doctorine means as much in international law as the Bush Doctorine. Nada de nada. The British own quite a few islands in the world to monitor sea lanes. Like Gibraltar and Bermuda. It then instructs America to send forces if there are any problems. That way America pays. Britain rents a few places to America for bases too to get some money. Like Diego Garcia.
Why should Britain involve US why should islanders be taken over by US military bases, this dispute is between UK and Argentina US does not need to be involved in every nations sovrienty.
my dear, you forget to add few more things.........then it will keep saying that it is an american issue to hunt down, then america has to pay. even in join war first america have to put first bomb in british camp to start the war.

Most of the recent history in books we read our cautionary tales against the aggressive annexation of territory against the will of the people that live there already, I'm sorry to say. With Sth. Georgia and the Sth. Sandwich islands included together with associated Antarctic claims the actual amount of territory we're talking about here is vast. Bit by bit? (see 1939). . .
It should also be said that some countries are keener than others to indoctrinate their children, even in the formal classroom setting, tell a lie often enough and it starts to sound true. Propaganda also has a history of appearing in books, certain key facts can be left out at the will of the author.

If the majority of the people on the islands consider themselves British and want to remain under British control, not Argentinian, more power to them. The people living there should be able to decide who they want to be governed by.
It's unfortunate that this has come about when it has because there are numerous things that go against the UK; namely the falling out with EU over monetary policies. However if Argentina believes that this would work in their favor then they will be sadly mistaken as Britain still maintains close ties to the EU, and Europe will enforce economic sanctions as it had done during the Falkands Conflict of the 1980s. Cameron has played his cards right considering this turn of events for had he gone ahead with the anti-European sentiment within the UK, then he might well have found himself totally isolated from the rest of the EU save for Australia and perhaps New Zealand as part of the Commonwealth nations.
While I feel it's unfair to bring other countries into the conflict, if Argentina decide to attack once again Britain will have no choice but to retaliate and to attack Argentina proper. The UK and its allies were advised against attacking mainland Argentina during the last conflict, but if there is a next time then the UK will have to launch missiles on to specific targets within Argentina as the dispute will continue on ad infinitum.
And of course Canada still being a Commonwealth country like its smaller cousins Australian and New Zealand would most likely support the UK position as well.
This report was informative, but doesn't actually talk about the history. The history proves that Britain's claim to the islands is much better than Argentina's, which mainly consists of 'proximity issues'. Should Canada own Alaska because it's 'close'. What a joke. Luckily the window for US support for Argentina is closing as Obama has royally annoyed Catholics across the US with new assaults on their religious freedoms. We'll have a Republican in next, and he'll do his job and support our allies as they have supported us. I don't remember Argentina helping the US ever. In fact, they harbored Nazi war criminals for a long time. Argentina's government is yet again, trying to distract from economic collapse by using the islands as a talking point. Kirchner should be ashamed. She's no better than Leopoldo Galtieri.
The "proximity" fact is quite secondary. The main claim relies on historical and legal facts. If we're gonna review the video, then it should mention the previous effective occupation of the islands by Spain / Viceroyalty / Argentina before 1833, but it doesn't, showing it as if Argentina just decided one day it was the owner. There's plenty you should read about...
Also, there's inflation and corruption in Argentina, but no economic collapse AT ALL as you say. Much worse are the accounts and budgets and social stuff in England (just like in 1982!).
Argentina has a tradition of neutrality -like the US on this subject- in world conflicts (even in WWII, though it finally declared war on Germany after UK asked it!). But it seems you don't remember about the Gulf War, may I say, where Argentina dropped its long-lasting neutralty IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THE UNITED STATES. This, even after the US betrayed Argentina in '82 by not respecting the TIAR treaty, and EVEN when the US gave MILITARY SUPPORT to the UK in the war.
Please google "Richard Gott: Argentina's claim on the Falklands". It's a BRITISH article, not an Argentine.
Kind regards from Hurlingham, Argentina.
Fred.... It is a FACT beyond all FACTS that Argentina do not NOR never will have any sort of credible claim over the Falkland Islands. It's not going to happen, give it up, move on, smell the coffee, wake up, end of story.
Your ‘claim’ is laughable, which is why your only vocal supporters are…. Castro and Chavez, but unfortunately for you this does more damage to your cause than good, because the rest of the world recognizes these two retards as nutcases who’s opinions and views should never be taken seriously.
- You do not have any sort of territorial claim – the Islands are around 280 miles away, they do not fall within your waters
- You do not have a political claim – the UN recognizes the Islanders right to self determination
- You do not have a moral claim – British settlers were on the islands before Argentina even existed as a nation. Everybody who lives there are British subjects, and have been for hundreds of years
When you go to the UN today, you will be laughed out of town because the very principle of the UN is to support people’s rights to self-determination and the Islanders have made their choice time and time... and guess what, they want to live under the British flag, which means we are in the right, and you are in the wrong. You do not have a leg to stand on. The rest of the world is laughing at you – they do not take you seriously.
Oh… and for the record you don't even have a credible claim to your own country.... so why don't you all pack your bags and head back to the motherland chico? You are nothing but descendants of the Spanish, who came and wiped out the indigenous population and replaced it with your own culture, language and fascist mentality. Instead of worrying about an Island that wants nothing to do with you, why don’t you just pack your bags and go back to Spain and do everybody a favour
There is only one way to get your hands on the Islands, and that is take them by force.... But we all know that you will be sent home with your little tales between your legs – just like last time Too many lives have already been wasted by both sides on this and that is not cool. Accept that you cannot win and move on.
Peace

The first person to ever see these remote and desolate islands was British.
The first person to ever set foot and sleep on these islands was British.
The first nation to ever announce their claim to these uninhabited islands was British.
The above is essentially correct.
The problem with Argentina is that they invaded the Islands in 1832, and thought trespassing on the islands for a few months it became theirs. The British returned and evicted the trespassers, but till this day the Argentines think that because they walked around the islands illegally for awhile that it belongs to them. The only way to deal with 'thugs' like this is to use severe attention getting FORCE until they get the message "You can't take what is not yours".
Where did you take those dates from?? The islands were under Spain's effective control since 1767. After the revolutionary war, Argentina re-occupied the settlements as soon as it could (that is 1820 !!). There was no one there. Make a little algebra and tell me if it was a few months as u say. I also recommend you to google "Argentina's claim on the Falklands". British source.
Guys, when will you learn that superior armies and international bullying DO NOT PROVIDE RIGHTS !! If England had such a good set of arguments, they would sit to discuss without problem at all. In the past, they've even recognized their lack of legal base to defend the islands. Their ONLY POSSIBLE strategy now, is to avoid any negotiation at all.
Give peace a chance.
Although no longer acceptable either moraly or under International Law in the modern age most American and a great many other countries achieved independence from colonial powers on the basis of the claimed right of the inhabitants (usually settlers and their descendants) to self-determination having supplanted previous inhabitants. Any such country that denies this must also deny the basis for its own original struggle for independence. The Argentine Government denounces British “colonialism” when the Argentine intention is to ignore the wishes of the people living there, to dominate, subjugate and impose an alien culture....which happens to be colonialism; Argentine colonial ambitions. And FYI No Argentine population was expelled in 1833. They were settlers sent from Buenos Aires, of mixed nationality, none of them born in the Falklands. The British expelled the Buenos Aires garrison (as this was sovereign British territory at the time) and the civilians were encouraged to stay and most of them did. Hardly brutal
Eire and FSL – This is one of the best threads I've been on here in ages. Thanks to people like you and the other positive posters we have actual facts and reasonable comments with only the odd troll creeping in. Respect to all of you.
The Falkland Islands voted to stay with the British, there is nothing to talk about, you can keep talking about who got there first and when, but we voted to stay British, we are British, why should we switch to a government that says it owns us just because there close to us and its idea to show this is to cut supplies off one at a time?, also its idea of the Islanders have no say is wrong in so many levels.
The argies can keep saying it, but we don't care we will remain not part of them and with our de-facto government the UK.
look if it was all to do with proximity Greenland should belong to Canada Iceland and fareo isles be British not Danish but they who live on those islands want to remain as is just like the Falkland islanders wish to remain British that's all that should matter which it clearly is the case. Using the same tactics short of occupation(as if they would dare again) as in 1982 is shameful but that is coming from a country who is notorious for being fasicst
Argentina has a recent history of Murdering 10,000 of its own citizens by their military in the 1970's and 1980's. The preffered method was to throw bound dissidents from an Argentine air force plane into the River Plate at 10,000 feet. And besides Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele, Argentina sheltered hundred is not thousands of Nazi War Criminals. And people wonder why the Falkland Islanders don't want to become part Argentina???? Especially after Argentina invaded in 1982? Let the Falkland Islanders have the right of self determination.
Tell the Argies to go screw themselves and then let them have it if they try any suicidal military action.
81 Euro fighters (SU 30 series kill ratio 4.6:1) with air to air refueling – v- 34 40 yr old obsolete A4s and 29 70's Mirage 5's
7 SSNs – v – 3 1980s diesels
This is a sad affair and not driven i think by people with the best intentions.
But what makes me laugh is that the Argentina are claiming them from a point in time when the nation of Argentina didn't exist
So I'm wondering if there is any legal basis Argentina could take action upon? And if not, which it appears there isn't, does it make their claim a fraud by elected people suffering from post dramatic stress disorder?
bottom line: if the people of the island want to remain british then let them remain british. if they want to be argentinian then let them be that. its not that complicated.
America must stand with Great Britain as she stands for the rights of the Falkland Islanders to determine their own future. Unfortunately, this issue is only rearing its ugly head once again because the Argentinian Government wants to divert the attention of its people.
The Falklands are British, and that is that !. If the islanderes want to become Argentinian, they will say so and they can be that. Hardly likely if you look at the recent history of that country. There must be something going wrong internally or they would not be bothering, must be the oil they can smell. Silly people, get a hobby or something....
Falkland Island belongs to its inhabitants. All the countries in the western hemisphere is stolen from the Native Americans. Will Argentina or any of the countries of North and South America give up its sovereignty to it's original Native Americans? Stop messing with the Falklands. Go find some other Affirmative Action item to work on.
People talk of the British stealing the Falkland Islands from the Argentinians. The British, however, occupied the Falklands before Argentina even existed.
The islandzs were uninhabited when discovered They were claimed and settled by the British by right of discovery. This was BEFORE the nation of Argentina ever existed. THe inhabitants were of British origin and have always considered themselvces British. Certainly they should have the right to determine their own political future. In time they might have come to voluntarily affiliate with Argentina if only because of geographiv conveniece but centuries of heavy handed response by totalitarian Angentinian regimes have repeatedly alienated them. Why would ANYONE want to be part of a consisyently repressive and politically and economic country like Argentina when they are already part of one of the wotld's most stable and democratic republics?
David Cameron has consistently stated that the people of the Falkland Islands are totally free to make their own choices about their sovereignty.
The people of the Falkland Islands want to stay part of the UK, as far as I'm aware not a single person there wants anything to do with Argentina.
I honestly don't see a reason for the debate to go any further....the people have spoken.
Could some of you Americans please refer to the ownership of these islands as being British, not English. And to some of you anti British Americans that bear Anglo Saxon names, thankyou for nothing.
And of course Canada still being a Commonwealth country like its smaller cousins Australian and New Zealand would most likely support the UK position as well.
t
That was a ridiculously shallow and meaningless report. Shameful!
Thank you. Great post.
Sorry – great post Commonsense!
Yes, yes and yes. Right on all 3 counts. Cheers.
Yes, yes, and yes. Right on all 3 counts!
yea, like Australia (with out aborginals ) , india (with out indians) and many more.........

This is the only reply that matters.
look if it was all to do with proximity Greenland should belong to Canada Iceland and fareo isles be British not Danish but they who live on those islands want to remain as is just like the Falkland islanders wish to remain British that's all that should matter which it clearly is the case. Using the same tactics short of occupation(as if they would dare again) as in 1982 is shameful but that is coming from a country who is notorious for being fasicst
p.s Maggie Thatcher we love you your post had to be the strongest argument to tell them they have NO rights in any which way or sort.
Why are people arguing about this? Britain has owned the islands since 1833 and the residents want to remain British. End of discussion.
Argentina brings this up whenever they need to divert attention from the failure of some government policy or something.
Tell the Argies to go screw themselves and then let them have it if they try any suicidal military action.

Nice balanced report I thought
COME AND HAVE A GO IF YOU THINK YOU'RE HARD ENOUGH!
Pure British colonialism. A little Island nation occupying an Island chain from another hemisphere.
...and of course the Islanders want to stay British. They've been occupying it for several generations.
bottom line: if the people of the island want to remain british then let them remain british. if they want to be argentinian then let them be that. its not that complicated.
Read this please and understand the real facts:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_Islands_sovereignty_dispute
You really dont know your friends in this world, maybe you could ask the Argentinians to take over the British position when it come to your wars. We have supplied so many of our young men and women to stand by you in these conflicks and this is our reward from you, Hate and cynical comments towards us.
