A German waitress felt a little nervous about bringing a tray of beer to the table where German Chancellor Angela Merkel was sitting. So the waitress asked her colleague, Martin, to serve Merkel's table instead.
Martin, 21, held the tray of beer with his left hand while serving Merkel with his right hand. But he didn't keep his balance. The five glasses of beer slid off of his tray and landed directly on the back of the most powerful person in Germany. A YouTube video of the accident began going viral last night.
Merkel's aides immediately rushed over to wipe off the back of her suit jacket. She appears calm in the video and is later seen drinking beer with her table. They were at the restaurant for a Christian Democratic Union meeting, The Daily Mail reported.
The waiter later said that the clumsy mistake wasn't really his fault. "I was shoved from behind, and tried to catch the beers, but it was too late," he told the Bild newspaper.
In a BBC video of the accident, it appears that Martin could be telling the truth. The beer spills just as a man in a suit, with his back facing Martin, walks by the tray.
Nonetheless, Martin has been taking all of the blame.
"It's not the sort of thing to do to your country's leader if you're a waiter," a BBC commentator remarked.

What an amazing lady. Her composure is what defines her character. For someone in her status, security would be so uptight, and any abnormal move would put her in awkward emotions. Nonetheless, she immediately absorbed the situation and moved on. Amazing Merkel.

It was the uber important advance, aide or security guy in the black suit ...plain as day to see...and the gal behind Ms. Merkel clearly saw this self absorbed idiot (acting like a big shot) hit the waiter's tray....she GLARES at him...and realizing what he did...he then is mouth agape. He should step up..take responsibility and apologize to the waiter and Ms. Merkel. Pretty funny though...lol
totally agree– you can see that when he passes behind, the edge of the tray is moved up and then drops down after he goes by. HE should do the apologizing!!

While I'm sure it wasn't the evening she had planned, I must disagree with you that it is a horrible way to spend an evening. Some of my best evenings have been spent drenched in beer.
Though it seriously doesn't look like an accident to me personally (the tray falls well before the person comes in contact with the waiter), accidents do happen in our very imperfect world, even to very irrational persons.
People who get nervous around someone important are dangerous and should be kept away.
Barack Hussein Obama would've needed a teleprompter or two telling him how to react. Then he would've formed a Beer Czar and Beer Spilling Committee to investigate how to create laws and implement taxes to protect us from spilling beer on ourselves. Man, how could we idiot commoners live without our all-knowing politicians?

She handles it like a true modern day German politician. Had she become even slightly flustered it would have been the death of her political career. Fore totally understandable reasons, Germans seem to prefer their leaders to be as bland and steady as possible these days.

If you click on the link in the article that takes you to the BBC video, it shows a slowed down version and it does not appear that the "Man in Black" comes even close to knocking into the beer or the waiter. Although I'd like to see it from another angle, which I'm sure there are since it seems everyone had their iPhones out.

I can tell you for a fact that's one clumsy waiter who can't even hold a tray right. Sure he might have had a some help with the passerby but he had nearly spilled it before the guy walked by him and his tray carrying technique is a disaster waiting to happen in the first place.

Its really amazing: This woman shrugs off 5 glasses of beer sloshing down her back without even a hint of emotion, but one US President George W Bush gives her a back massage and she nearly shudders out of her own skin to get away. Amazing.

I was a waiter and spilled a tray full of glasses of beer & spirit drinks over a man. That was bad enough. It was a wedding reception & he was in a hired velvet jacket. Fortunately he had a sense of humour. I havn't been a waiter since.

Good, I'm not the only spiller. Once I was carrying a tray in front of an elevated table where some Heads of State sat,
along with some other big wigs and of all things Artemis Gordon ( why he was there?? Remember Wild Wild West?)
and spilled the sucker down the skirt of the table in front of a whole crowd. I can chuckle about it now, but then ...
Chancellor Angela Merkel: a true lady, a true diplomat – composed, poised, discerning....Poor Mr. Martin with endless nights of remorse, despite his Chancellor taking the mis-step in kind light....
Well, the clumsy waiter also can't seem to tell the truth even in the aftermath. He claims he was shoved from behind and tried to catch the beer glasses but it was too late. The video shows that claim to be entirely fabricated and the truth is that he tipped the tray forward as he leaned over to serve Merkel her beer, dumping the remainder of the glasses of beer on her back.
If you make a mistake, admit it and live with it. Telling a lie and blaming it on someone else only demonstrates that you have no character.
