Watch GPS: Will Israel strike Iran?

On GPS this week, will Israel strike Iran? I speak to an Israeli journalist with access to the highest echelons of power: Ronen Bergman of Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel's top-selling daily.

Also, looking ahead to Super Tuesday: TIME's Joe Klein, Katrina vanden Heuvel of The Nation, Chrystia Freeland, and Reihan Salam weigh in on the GOP candidates.

Also on GPS, where will the next financial crash come from? Hint: it's not Europe, and it's not the U.S.

All that and much more. Here are three excerpts from Ronen Bergman:

All options on the table - except one

Ronen Bergman: The minister of Defense, Barak, told me - and he is writing the Israeli doctrine when it comesto a possible Israeli strike on Iran - that all options are on the table, indeed, he says. But from our point of view, there is one option that is not on the table. This is the C option, containment. Israel, he said, will never contain a nuclear Iran. There is no possibility that we are going to accept such a country holding such a weapon.

Will Israel attack Iran?

Ronen Bergman: After speaking with many of the Israeli leaders and chiefs of the intelligence and the military, I have come to the conclusion that there is a strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran during 2012 because Iran is getting too close to what was coined by minister of defense, Ehud Barak, as the "zone of immunity". This is the specific point on the time line, after which Iran's nuclear sites are going to become immune to an Israeli strike.

According to Israel, the latest intelligence assessment, Iran is something like nine months away from entering this so-called zone of immunity. Therefore, there are many in Israel who believe that Israel should take the initiative and strike before because sanctions do not yield the results that Israel hoped they would result in

When Netanyahu meets Obama

Fareed Zakaria: What do you think Prime Minister Netanyahu is going to tell President Obama at the Oval Office on Monday?

Ronen Bergman: I would assume that the Israeli prime minister would ask President Obama to give Israel assurances on what exactly does it mean when he says that the U.S. is determined to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear state?

If the U.S. is willing to guarantee Israel that if Israel doesn't strike, the U.S., when the time comes and the Iranian supreme leader orders his scientists to start producing the first bomb, then the U.S. would strike. I would assume that on that specific issue, the president of the United States would be very cautious from making promises and obliging himself to restricted military actions.

And on the other hand, I assume that Prime Minister Netanyahu is going to use the same vague language as he used before, when the president will ask him to refrain from attacking. He will say something like, Israel reserves itself the right to defend itself and will not promise the president not to strike or to give the U.S. a heads-up, a prior warning, before a strike takes place.

There are many in Israel who are smart, intelligent and rational. I hope they will knock some sense into Ehud Barak and Netanyahu! They are hijacking Iran's nuclear program for waging war. It's time for them to calm down. First, if Israel has as strong a military as it claims to have, there's no reason for these two hotheads to be paranoid. Second there's no guarantee that Iran would destroy Israel. The garrulous Ahmadinejad had once said it. Don't take his words at face value. There's a saying: Barking dogs don't bite. The U.S. will be well-advised to stay composed and rational.

        J von hettlingen...

If my neighbor was running around with a gun yelling that I and all my family members would die soon I would not trust his friends saying that this guy does not have any plans to LOAD his gun... Especially if a gunpowder machinery was working at full speed in his basement.

Hettlingen, the problem with democracy is that it takes time. Both Iran and Israel are run by governers who base their politics and promotion on old fashion religion concept. They are not basically different. They are both isolated from the world in a kin'o "dejevu". But the new generation has different views and needs. If the present powers can not addept they will eventually perish.

deniz boro... It is ALWAYS better to HAVE A CLUE of what you're talking about in order to promote your point. IN this particular case it would be helpful for you to learn that Israel is a multiparty democracy governed by a democratically elected SECULAR government which is bound to the SECULAR laws issued by the SECULAR parliament (Kneset).

Most people who comment here and who write articles don't know anything about Military strength and technology or are just trying to make a story and doing it to make a living.

Let's put it this way: Israel is technically a super power, it has a top 8 Military in the whole world and can treat Iran like it's rag doll if it wishes. It can easily wipe out Iran's nuclear facilities with less than 100 Fighter Jets. Israel also has hundreds of Jericho 2 Missiles Capable of delivering nuclear warheads. Heck, they even have Jericho 3 ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missiles) Nuclear equipped, as well as Nuclear armed submarines....which means technically they can wipe out any other country in the world, which they would never do unless it's existance is being threatened. However, if Israel is facing imminent defeat which I highly doubt, It has nuclear armed weapons pointing at every enemy capital and city that they have.. so It wouldn't be wise to mess with Israel. Iran is scared crapless of Israel and doesn't want to commit it's own suicide by striking Israel, it's all a game folks, play on with it! :)

Are you an armchair blogger trying to impress everyone how much knowledge YOU have in missiles and submarines or have you attended any military ? If it is the latter, as per my experience people dont show off like you do.

An attack on Iran would cause them to put Saudi Arabia out of the oil business for months (years?). The oil industry would not like that! They will not try to close the straights of Hormuz which they use and they should not irritate the US navy. The price of oil would go to $300.00 a barrel for starters.

Israel will not use force against Iran unless as a last resort when the will be no other way to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. If it happens, however, Israel will not ask for anyone's permission to defend itself and will use enough force to assure that Iran will not be willing to continue fighting.

John Anderson has his facts straight. I had to smile when Netanyahu ("I have to deal with him every day") said Israel would wait until after the US elections. Yeah... right. Obama will be told what Obama wants to hear by Netanyahu. Netanyahu not only racing Iran's nuclear program but he's also racing against a Russian-designed anti-missile system.

I give it two months before Israel jets decimate every known and suspected facility. Wait until after the US elections? Heh...

the israeli army may have the weapons, but it does not make them strong. They have been defeated by the smallest armies.
example: when they tried to occupy and steal Lebanese land they ran out of Lebanon calling for their mommies.

And if they do strike i truly believe it will lead to WWIII

Oh, really, so in frist place you agree that Israel DOES possess WMDs, so in spirit, it is against the U.N. Security Council Resolution 687 (1991), that holds responsible the worlds (so called) powers to make middle east the WMDFZ (WDM Free Zone), but we know, its only the Great US and Israel who can lecture any nation, NOT to carry/develop WMDs/ Nuclear weapons. What morals these two real brothers bear. More, a question for you, as you foul about Israel's supremacy of military might, why it could not 'acheive' its declared-goals in its military conflict in July 2006

        March 5, 2012 at 1:09 am |
      • Neko

Abbas, Israel's population is 6 million whereas the Arab countries, based on estimations, have over 600 million people. Now, since it is well known that Arab countries would like to annihilate Isreal, is it not wise to have a stock of WMDs to put fear into your enemies.

I hope Obama makes it clear to Netanyahu that they go it alone with absolutely no help from the US, even if Iran retaliates. A poll came out two days ago showing that only 19% of Israelis support attacking Iran if they do it alone. Interesting!! Either 81% of Israelis do not view Iran as an 'existential threat like Netanyahu does or they are cowards. In a way I hope Israel goes it alone and its planes are shot down, pilots captured, their bombs can't penetrate Iran's defen ses and missiles rain down on Tel-Aviv. This may rid Israel of some of its arrogance and superiority so they get rid of Netanyahu and Lieberman, stop settlement building and make a just peace with the Palestinians. Did you notice that North Korea is going to allow nucleur inspections like Iran has. What rogue nation won't allow inspections?

I think if an Israeli air strike would end in disaster for them, they will use tactical nukes to destroy Iranian sites... If we like it or not, if Iran doesn't comply with the demands of the international community something very awful will happen. By the way, do you really trust fundamentalistic zealots with nuclear weapons? I've travelled extensivly in Muslim countries, and all I can say is that our logic and rationalism doesn't apply to them. Make no mistake about that.

Israel will certainly not strike Iran as no other county will. Iran just wears the black hat in this election year. Which means it is the black goat. (Please refer to the use of black goat in the Old Testement). The only emphasis of the black goat of the year is that it is election year for so many major powers. Striking plans on Iran will culminate and reach a summit towards the end of year with the coming USA elections. Although the result of USA elections are so clear to some, the hopefulls have to have their run for this is the arena politics. And common people need entertainment. The truth is that none of the countries of the world has the mental or physical capacity to start a war. And dogs that bark do not bark unless they are deeply disordered.

This is one war that is entirely preventable and doesn't need to happen. If only one of the European leaders or even that of Australia or New Zealand would for one time climb out of their ivory towers and talk to both Israel and Iran to get the two to a sensible agreement, that would be splendid. I guess that that's only wishful thinking on my part as these useless people are too busy taking orders from Washington D.C.!!!

Thanks to internet people do learn what they have been denied before and thus can make their own decisions. This is true for all countries as well as Israel. Just look what we are doing here. We are sharing info. And no truth can be hidden. We may have our differences but I do believe in humanity.

Why should the epaapl be made to Brenda O'Connor ? The short answer to this is that the person who proposed a discussion paper regarding an R18+ rating for computer games was the former minister for Home Affairs Bob Debus. When Bob Debus decided to leave the front bench -and eventually the political arena (he's not contesting the next election)- Brendan O'Connor became Minister for Home Affairs. Unlike the previous Liberal government where the censorship minister was clearly identifed as the Federal Attorney General, under the current government Bob Debus as Minister for Home Affairs took responsibility for censorship related issues. As far as I can tell the Minister for Home Affairs takes responsibility for censorship related issues in the Federal Government.

Iran may agree to stop its quest for nucleur weapons if Israel would declare its nucleur stockpiles and allow inspections but of course Israel won't do that. North Korea said that they will allow in nucleur inspectors, this week , like Iran has. This shows that Israel is more of a rogue state than North Korea. I hope Iran gets the bomb since Israel's government has been taken over by religious fanatics that more than match the ayatollahs. Google "israeli settler news" to meet the religious fanatics from hell that view non-Jews as sub-human and act out these views violently in their attempts to ethnically cleanse the West Bank and Jerusalem of all non-Jews. They have a messianic and expansionist goal of a Greater Israel that includes much of the Mid-East including all of Iraq and most of Iran. I am rooting for Iran on this one since unlike Israel they do not have expansionist goals.

You're right that Israel would not do that. Doing this without signing peace agreements with the Arab states would be suicidal for Israel as the Arabs (and, probably, Iran) would try to destroy Israel stripped of its nuclear weapons again as they've done in 1948, 1967 and 1973.

Re posting a epsronse from the earlier thread Arnold,For the past thirty years Egypt has had an Emergency Law that gave Mubbarak unbridled powers. The nominal reason for this was because of the assasination of Anwar Sadat, but a thirty year State of Emergency is not a normal epsronse to something even that drastic. The reason Mubbarak was able to get away for this long without repealing that law was because Egypt was a highly militarized state that had fought several costly wars against Israel at great cost. The general understanding existed that if Egypt became weak because of internal strife Israel would try to capitilise. Furthermore the threat of Israel was used to justify to many Egyptians just why they couldn’t pursue policies they otherwise would have liked to. They couldn’t support the palestinians or oppose the Iraq wars or take any steps to achieve a measure of independence because, if they did, they would lose all of Washington’s support, while Israel would gain a blank check, and then where would they be. Similar dynamics were and are in play in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, and to a lesser extent in the Persian Gulf and North African states.

        March 14, 2012 at 12:13 am |

Also, they would never say when they will attack. It will be a surprise attack, Israel knows this stuff better than any country in the world. If they haven't already destroyed all the facilities, tough talk from Iran only makes their supporters believe this would actually be a dog fight but instead it would be a Lion stepping on an ant. My fear is that despite the other Arab states wanting Israel to do that very thing, they would be forced to join in an Arab coalition that supports Iran. The US could not get between Iran and Israel fast enough, and a lot of Israel and Israelis would be destroyed. The price of oil goes through the roof, and we all go into another recession.

Course, if Iran attacks first, the scenario pretty much plays out the same way. Israel would be able to unleash full fury, all forces, but the distance is against it. I don't think anyone really wins either way.

Iran will not attack first. They have not started a war in my life time (82 years). Did things go well in Iraq? Are things going well in Afganistan? Did we like the results in Vietnam. Are the questions getting to be to tough? Stay out of Iran. Wars are much easier to start than to finish and they are not over until the enemy stops shooting at you!

Are you trying to tell us that Iranian leaders are LIARS and that YOU know better what their plans are? IF my neighbor was running around with a gun yelling that I and all my family members would die soon I would not trust his friends saying that this guy does not have any plans to LOAD his gun... Especially if a gunpowder machinery was working at full speed in his basement.

Can anyone tell me how many western people were killed by Iran for the last 10 years ?
How many Iraqis were killed because of US invasion to Iraq ?
How many arabs were killed after foundation of the state of Isreal
I can swear the the number of innocent people killed by the western world,US and Israel is the biggest in the human history ( or at least for the last 10 years)
You caused the most horrible damage to the humanity by attacking Iraq and Afghanistan ( Millions were killed !!).
Now tell me who is the terrorist !!
Why don't you go and fight the drug dealers and gangs in Mexico who claim lives of thousands ?
It is obvious who is the real threat to the humanity now !!!

I can tell you that terrorists are those who DELIBERATELY attack civilians with political goals. For example, the 20 Arabs who came to the US from Aghanistan with a goal to murder as many innocent Americans as possible were terrorists. The governments of Afghanistan and some other countries who supported terrorists then and support them today are terrorist supporters. FIghting back in self defence after being attacked is NOT terrorism, however, even if the number of dead terrorists and their supporters is higher than the number of civilians murdered by these terrorists.

I would like to pose a question or two. Not to state the obvious, but you all seem to have definite opinions and most seem to have thought behind them so if some of you would, please give me your thoughts. Question 1.) Israel destroys Iran's nuclear plant and Iran strikes back . Will the US intervene on Israels behalf? 2.) The same senario but Iran strikes back accompanied by Russian troops. Again, would the US become involved? 3.) Last, same senario but the ending is that Israel wipes out both of their armies and some of their cities leaving Iran, Russia and their allies in the region negated. How would such an outcome change the balance of world power and what you think the fate of the US would be with such a change?

YES!! when Iran attacks Israel and the rest of the world they are a threat. I've been hearing for over 20 years how Iran needs to be taken out because of what the students/people did when they rebelled against their government and stormed the U.S. embassy. I love how everyone on here claims that all in the country are evil people and need to be taken off the face of the earth. And if anyone on here knows anything about government run countries would know Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a puppet. He may say idiotic statements such as the holocaust never happened and so on you honestly think he really means & thinks that in the back of his mind. He says it for face value and probably because as always he is being told what to say and when to say it.

unfortunately I think that Israel will strike the Iranian nuclear sites. Only 19 % of the people in the country of Israel agree with a preemptive strike according to a recent poll within that country. The problems are much greater that Israel striking Iran, and knocking out their nuclear capacity though. The implications of Israel acting first are enormous, because it runs the risk of polarizing a destabilized middle east. Many Arab countries are in a state of turmoil ( which may be part of Israels thinking in its reason to strike), but from a long term strategic point of view this could be a polarizing event for many of these countries. There is no better way to unite people than to claim a common enemy, whether the claim is false or not.
The second long term strategic loss is that this will then convince other nations around Israel that they have no choice but to weaponize themselves against the American Israeli threat. Then Israel will be in a position where they have to carry this out again and again, with the result of turning other nations against them.

If it comes down to a ground war of any sort it will not come down to the Israelis to fight it. the USA will wind up being the country that sends ground troops ( which is the last thing that this country needs, or the American people will support).

I hope that none of those scenarios above come to pass but I feel that Israel will act unilaterally if they feel they need to. If conventional weapons are unsuccesful at stopping the development of an Iranian nuke program then the other option is Israel using tactical nukes. God forbid if that happens.

Israel will not use force against Iran unless as a last resort when the will be no other way to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. If it happens, however, Israel will not ask for anyone's permission to defend itself and will use enough force to assure that Iran will not be willing to continue fighting...

      • Thinker 24

Israel has the right to defend itself. Iran does not?

Israel can have nuclear weapons.Iran cannot?

If Israel attacks, this will be called a 'defensive action' against Iran's 'aggression'

        Makes perfect sense.

The attack on Iraq's reactor only increased Iraq's 'aggression'

Funnily enough the 'unsecurity' council will not take a vote on this.

Ehud Barak made it pretty clear. Iran's nuclear ambitions will be destroyed.
Iran has formidable advanced Air Defenses and the distance Israeli fighter bombers would have to travel would doom an Israeli airstrike.
I don't think it's possible for Israel to destroy the Iranian nuclear complex built deep inside a mountain; short of a nuclear strike.
Israel has the very latest Diesel powered German built submarines that are almost impossible to detect.
For the reason of distance and Iranian advanced air defenses, that unless Israel has Iranian I.F.F. codes, I think the strike will come by submarine with a nuclear strike on the mountain and a conventional strike on the rest of the nuclear sites.
I think unless there is a nuclear strike, Iran will not capitulate and Iran will size Iraqi and Kuwaiti Oil assets along with American stored M-1 tanks in Kuwait.
Israel is legend for overkill and will not hesitate to use a nuclear weapon and in this case that may be the best option for the United States.
I have long been a critic of Israel for going against U.N. Resolutions but the reality is those resolutions are old and those teritories occupied with many millions of Israelis so as much as I don't like to say it, those resolutions need to be revisited.

What is truly amazing in this discussion is that we are to believe that Islamists using WASP names are to be believed. We know who you are and we know that you gang up on sites like this to try and make us believe your rhetoric.

Furthermore, Propaganda in all its forms is well known by the educated masses. Propaganda may work in your "bled" because you purposefully keep your people uneducated–especially your women. Educated people know better and can formulate their own deductions on what is right and wrong. The problem with you is that you have no comeback from educated people. Advocating the killing of millions based on your cavemen ideas is wrong and will be punished. Ask your hero A.H.!

I was listening to the show this morning and I was amazed by what Joe Klein said. "We have a President who doesn't have the good sense to be black or white and has a middle name that is Hussein." I've been asking myself what he meant by that. People dont choose the family they are birthed into, or the race of their parents and I found that offensive. It's okay to have an opinion but personalizing certain statements like that is untasteful, racists and makes him sound like an idiot. What? does he have a problem with inter-racial marriages? Too bad! and for people who can see past the color of their skins and marry each other, good for you. We have more important things to talk about in these present times to be bothered with what the race of our President is or is not and by the way Joe, he is black so go bump a wall.

I do wonder who's interest is being served when the list of speakers at the current AIPAC conference includes all of our national leaders – Obama,Panetta, McConnell, Pelosi,Romney, Grinrich, Santorum.
I am feeling the same buildup by media that occurred before the reckless invasion and occupation of Iraq which ranks as one of the worst U.S. actions in history.

Why doesn't anyone discuss the possibilty of nuclear fallout if Iran's nuclear facilities are attacked? It seems to me that if the wind blows the wrong way there could easily be unintended consequences to many countries in this crowded neighborhood. The same holds true of Iran – attempting to obliterate Israel with nuclear weaponry would likely destroy Iran's friends and allies.

Israel's top commander of the army said when he looks up, he sees Netanyahu...And when Netanyahu looks up, he sees the sky and HIS God telling him to strike Iran before they develop nuclear weapon...Well, you know what I would tell the commander of the army? Either annihilate Netanyahu or risk his country being annihilated to make Netanyahus' martyr syndrome become a reality...

Here's my option C for you all, which is SO simple in words and yet seems so difficult in action...
Get Iran's agreement and voluntary agreement to NOT build nuclear weapon IF Israel agrees to peace with Palestine and once and for all, resolve the border dispute...Same for North Korea...IF they are allowed to finally become a sovereign nation UNDER the armistice treaty AND US finally agrees to give up on their puppet plans to control the region once and for all, then North Korea will give up on its nuclear mission also...Until then, the clock continues to tick and getting louder by the day
tick tock, tick tock, tick tock...

There is so much talk about the media inciting the problem, I feel this is a prime example. For Mr. Zakaria to introduce a guest who "knows the people in Israel with the answer" and the guest comes on and immediately says that Israel will attack in 2012 I feel is inciting negative reaction and pushing either Israel or Iran to react. Bad news reporting and I do respect much of what he has reported.

We all live on this rock which it's only borrowed like the time we live. Thank GOD this isn't eternal because it would be a messed up place to live forever! Here Today Gone Tomorrow...

I was dead set against US going to war against Iraq and I was dead against our Afghan adventure. In retrospect, I have been vindicated. More, it has had awful consequences for Israel.

It surely looks like I will have to wait for the law of unintended consequences to vindicate me again. More, I expect that the consequences for Israel will be even worse.

the issue is the continuation of iranian foreign policy, i.e., arming, hezbollah, supporting syria as a conduit for weapons arming israels's enemies, and as a terrorism exporter, threatening the strait of Hormuz, but armed with a nuclear weapon. this is a recipe for a war, not now but soon, in which Iran will use its nuclear weapon
