Do you have a burning question about what's going on in the world? From the U.S. presidential race to unrest in Syria, from China's rise to diplomacy with Iran, events are rocking the political, economic and social foundations of this planet.
Submit your questions in the comment thread below before 8am EST on Wednesday and check back later in the week for Fareed Zakaria's video and text answers.

With the first term of the Obama administration coming to a close, what will be the defining legacy of this administration.
Why haven't you invited Angela Merkel or Nicolas Sarkozy to your show? Angela Merkel could have a lot to say. Soon we'll know if Sarkozy stays, but what about Putin?
Zbigniew Brzezinski said during his interview on 26 February about Israel's potential strike on Iran: "They're not going to go to war by flying over our airspace over Iraq". Yes, it's the central, more likely route Israeli warplanes would take – over Iraq, instead of flying north over Turkey and Syria, or flying south over Saudi Arabia. But the Americans are gone and the Iraqis might not be able to monitor the air-space. Did Brzezinski mean that the U.S. would stand the Iraqis by and help them monitor the air-space, in light of an Israeli attack on Iran?
why no questions about israel's nuclear weapons? weren't they suppose to make them safer?
Taking about Israel's Nuclear weapons are a taboo. If you pursue this topic further you will be considered an Antisemitic
Well said!!!
Most probably, Fareed will ignore this comment. Because, as you said, talking about this issue is taboo for American elite media
Did Dempsey mean to say:
A) America doesnt consider Iran an existential to Israel
OR
B) America doesn't consider Iran an existential threat to the U.S.
Thanks
America is threat to Iran's economy and their democratically elected government. We had Jim crew Law not long ago and the USSR didn't Nuke us.
Why the Americans spend billions of Dollars for a war that is imagined.
What is with the US apprehension on dealing with Syria? Is it due to pressure from Russia and China?
As a Brit watching the US elections with amusement, when will the GOP ever stop tearing itself apart and put up an electable candidate?
I too would like to know the answer to this question. I am so glad someone brought this up because it seems like no one else here in the US notices how weak of candidates the GOP has chosen. I mean, why are we even having elections this year? Is there any question as to who will win?
I understand that you may be loathe to speculate, but I wonder if Saddam Hussain would have taken military action by now to inhibit Iran's nuclear program, were he still in power in Iraq?
What do you think of presidents election in russia?
How do think this situation with Iran will play out? Also, why is no one helping the Syrian people especially the Arab nations?
You have a winning smile – what toothbrush and toothpaste do you use? Do you floss?
What is the reality of The People's Republic of China's real estate bubble? Will it burst? Has it already? What will be China's response and how will it effect the global economy?
Fareed, you have been a critic of economic sanctions, but do you think they're working in Syria and/or Iran?
What are the main causes of the conflict in Syria?
how us will deal with Egypt in coming days
How will the U.S. ever manage diplomacy with Iran if our biggest ally in the middle east is ready to go to war with them at any given moment?
Dear Fareed,
What do you think are the chances for a second Great Depression in the USA?
Howdy Fareed, I am considering taking a job that requires a 3 month trip to China (I live in the US). Question: Is it safe for Americans to work in China? Thanks, JAL
Are we seeing a Turkey facing its political and economical poles to the East, slowly detaching its diplomatic relations and strings to the West?
Isreal has a nasty habit of going it alone in the face of great odds lets hope if they go off and attack Iran that it does not bring the rath of China and Russia down on them this could be the catalast that Bladimer Putin needs to cement his power, the question is does Isreal have the bombs required to complete the mission?
Do the Israeli or Americans know that IRANIAN regime although massively abusive toward Iranian people in particular toward women, Can Not attack any country [ that is according to the Shari'a law of Islam ( Shi'a Islam that is) ]. But if attacked the order of Jihad will be given to every man and woman to defend the sovereignty of its country?
I've watched many paneldebates which you've held and also attended Sir, I was wondering if you could discuss the Kurdish roll sometime and their opportunities, if US intervenes in Syria and the kurds stand there. But also how the kurds in Iran will gain anything from oppositions in the west perhaps when things between P5+1 heatens up.
Thank you!
Fareed , Why hasn't Iran linked it's openness to nuclear inspections to Israel's withdrawing from the West Bank or opening their nuclear instalations to inspetions wouldn't Iran take the moral high ground or atleast good PR by doing so ?
Fareed, Any chance you can cover and discuss the ongoing Robert Levinson situation? Im not sure if you are familiar with this or not, but Robert Levinson is a US Citizen that disappeared in Iran 5 years ago and is still missing today. He is the father of my best friend, and I known the Levinson family for 15 years now. They are great people and desperately want their father returned safely to them. I know that your coverage of the situation would be a huge help to their ongoing efforts of obtaining more media coverage/assistance. It's a shame that not enough people are aware of this horrific situation . It would mean a lot to me and the Levinson family if you would help.
How do you effectively communicate to US politicians that the world outside the US also has a voice. They should listen since hearing is beyond comprehension?
Despite the persistent global financial crisis, countries have not turned inward. My understanding is that states enacted protectionist policies right after the 2008 financial crisis, but have since remained relatively open. First, did states enact protectionist policies right after the financial crisis? And if so, why did they forgo protectionist policies in favor of more openness policies? Thanks!
Hey Fareed, longtime fan.
My question is:
Do you think it's hyppocritical of US leaders to praise the Arab Spring revolutions as an attempt at democracy, but then devalue the concerns of people in the Occupy movement?
Thanks.
What impacts do you think the recent state elections in India shall have on the central UPA government in India, especially on foreign affairs, if any? The ruling Congress party has been royally defeated in major state elections it seems. Should the allies of India be worried? On what fronts?
Hi Fareed, my main question is about oil. You've had fantastic charts in past show explaining the relation between oil producing nations and the different price points require on a barril just for them to break even. Could you address the current and future correlation between risk in oil producing nations (protests in Moscow, Israel's potential on Iran, strait of Hormuz, etc.) and the effect on cost. Also, are the actions of some of the leaders, Putin for example, attempting to actually drive up the cost of oil so as to increase revenue for his government? Thanks Fareed!
That was one speedy reply! Thank you Fareed!
http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/09/zakaria-why-oil-prices-keep-rising/
Hi Fareed
Looking at GOP debates on Pills, Contraceptives,Church and State, do you think we have GOP presidential candidates trying to come up with same extremism we have been fighting in middle east and counties like AF- PAK?
I think this is serious issue and would love to have your analysis on this.
Hasn't the "overblown" Iranian threat to Israel undermined, or continue to undermine the peace talks between the Israeli and the Palestine for a two state solution? And by the way, are those talks going on?
Do you think U.S. financial and military aid to dictators is contributing to oppression? I ask this because I am Ethiopian and our dictator is a major recipient of US and EU aid which he uses to strengthen his hold on power and punish the opposition.
Whiole the rise of China has been dramatic and the modernisation of city hubs like Shanghai and Beijing are symbols of this rapid rise. There are still large amounts of inland provinces within China which have been left behind thus far. Would you say China is developed or still developing ?
Fareed,
Over time, how will China's increase in military capability affect their behavior as an actor in the international system? Will they promote international organizations and adhere to international law,or will they rely on their new found power?
Hi Fareed,
With the world's attention on Iran, is the US losing an opportunity to continue to push for greater accountability and transparency with Pakistan over their obvious collusion with terrorists? Thanks, AVK
Fareed – Have watched your show since it started. First time I'm asking a question. It is a follow-up to Jordan Baron's from a few minutes ago.
We hope you can cover and discuss the ongoing Robert Levinson situation. Just today the FBI offered a $1 million reward for information leading to his safe return. Robert Levinson is a US Citizen that disappeared in Iran 5 years ago. He is the father of my friend Jordan's best friend. We know that your coverage of the situation (What in the World segment or just tweets) would be a huge help to their ongoing efforts of obtaining more media coverage/assistance. It's a shame that not enough people are aware of this horrific situation . It would mean a lot to so many people for you to discuss this. Thanks.
Can peace be maintained with Iran? How?
Much of the conflict between nations seems to have a basis in religious ideology. The most turbulent and dangerous conflict seems to be between Israel and the Arab world. Many have tried to ease this conflict over the years. But lately it appears that this conflict is dangerously close to igniting a war with immense consequences. Who is the best person (or group of people) to permanently diffuse this situation? The US President? The Secretary of State? The UN? Is it essentially unsolvable?
Dear Fareed,
Huge fan of your work! I am wondering about your take on the Indian 2012 election? Do you believe that the congress party's failure to collect votes in the highly populated state of Uttar Pradesh are signs of trouble for India's continued economic growth? With such a divided political system, and with the rupee's value continuing to decrease what steps do you believe Prime Minister Singh must take in order to help India further their economic development?
How will Syria and Lebanon's relationship be effected by the Syrians seeking refuge in Lebanon? Is there any danger for people living in Lebanon
I remember my Dad arguing with my Grandfather about the middle east when I was a boy in the '60's.
Is it possible for a tranquil middle east in our lifetime?
Why do you think such a large portion of the American populous fixated on the idea that Israel is untouchable? There seems to be an outcry, by Republicans in particular, for the unbounded defense of Israel. I understand that Israel is America's ally, and I agree that nations should help their allies. But to suggest that America should instigate another war for them seems illogical. There is no hard evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
Fareed, why can't we get people in Washington and elsewhere to frame the proper questions about our country's problems? For example, Republicans rail against what they call Obamacare and liberal Democrats say we need a single payer system. It seems to mwe that both sides miss the issue of what kind of health care system is best for the country as a whole. What if the question was put to both Republicans and Democrats in this fashion? Do you want a health care system that makes drug companies, hospitals, doctors and health insurance companies rich off of sick people, or do we want a system that provides reasonable health care for all citizens at a reasonable cost? The answer I think is obvious, and framed in this way we might force people to begain to think again about the country's best interest and not their own self interest. What do you think? Why don't we frame the question differently?
What is the likelihood that the people of Syria will overthrow Bashar Al-Assad? What are the long term implications of the U.S. failure to act in the face of blatant and egregious war crimes on Syrian U.S. relations?
Fareed, I follow Transparency International's index with interest. But I seem to recall that Samuel Huntington had a rather sanguine view of global, political corruption. He saw it as a positive step in the development toward political legitimacy. Do you see nations with a high index of corruption to be on the right track or doomed to stagnated development? How can you make your assessment?
Ms. Fareed, who do you think pouses a grater threat to the security of the United states? islamic extremist, whos interest are mostly regional, or the mexican cartels, whos only god is money and power, and seem to have been able to infiltrate and corrupt US security and law enforcement agencies, and have no respect to human live whatsoever.
i also would like to ask. in the hipotetical case that mexican cartels were to became enemies with the "global islamic jihad" who do you think can win?
oh yeah... and who do think more evil. mexican cartels or islamic terrorist
Hi Fareed, thank you very much for great shows! My question, who are the beneficiaries of globalisation?
You, Me and whomever works smart, accordingly.
Sweden can be seen as one of the "beneficiaries", Don't you think so?
Hello Fareed,
My question is simple, as in why US is reluctant to take a firm and definite stand on Iran issue? why the reminders to Iran regarding nuc weapons?
Using tax rates seen throughout the 1900's, how would this years federal balance sheet look? I'm curious about previous U.S. tax rates and the current deficit. Of course, the country will not re-establish those rates at this point, but it would be interesting to see if there were any tax bracket systems in the past 100 years under which the U.S. would either run a surplus, or be close to balanced budgets.
President Obama came into office with the clear understanding, as a jurist, that Guantanamo Bay was a stain on American morals and values of justice. He was passionate on this item. What information could he possibly have that would prevent him from try the accused and, we hope, bring transparent justice not only for our honor, but theirs?
Could Assad be trying to pull The USA into a fight as to give Iran a reason to take action, say to close The Straight Of Hormuz, thus engaging The Fifth Fleet Of USN. Resulting in USA being Spread thin all over The Middle east and Gulf?
I have just finished reading The Post American World. Great book. Informative and ineresting. Since writing this book we have had significant changes in the national and international economys. What changes would you make, if any, regarding the post American world? Are you writing another book to reflect the present world situation and the future outlook.
What could be done about tax havens like the Cayman Islands? What can we do to have people bring their money home to the U.S.?
Mr. Zakaria,
First, I want to say I appreciate the tremendous depth you have brought to the tension between Israel and Iran.
With that said, I have become convinced (for a wide range of reasons) that we must let sanctions and diplomacy run their course, and ensure that Israel does not strike the first blow with military violence against Iran.
Considering the political stakes at hand on the topic, both here at home in the U.S. (considering this is an election year), as well as the political stakes in Israel, what must we do to convince the American and Israeli public (and their representative and respective leaderships) that a military strike against Iran is in no one's better interests?
Fareed first I would like to say I have always been interested in international affairs. My question is with the arab spring, the saber rattling with the islamic republic of Iran as well as unrest in Syria what is the endgame?
Thank you
Hi Fareed, i like your way of asking question ! You made a comment earlier – "That's what happens when the factors that lead a poor country to high growth – cheap labor, for example – disappear once it becomes a mid-tier economy. Then its growth rate slumps." Could this applied to India's slowdown too? and How much do you think the Economic Reform by opening the market be a panacea this time?
Thanks
We were watching some of the coverage of Syria. Our 9-year-old daughter turned to me and from a place of genuine curiosity (no judgement) asked "Mom, why should I care about what happens on the other side of the planet? Why does our country get involved in all these other countries?" I fumbled for an answer. We are big Fareed Zakaria fans in this household. How would you have answered her question? Help!
Is there a greater chance of dialogue between North Korea and the United States now that Kim Jong Un is in power? Also, will North Korea keep its promise of suspending its nuclear program, or is it just a ploy to get more aid from the western nations?
I'm a Canadian who wonders if Americans, regardless of political stripe, agree on one thing: that Israel is a benign (even Divine) democracy that treats all citizens equally and is NOT effectively occupying millions of Palestinians. I find it incredible that even left-of-centre U-S politicians repeat the deliberate misinformation regarding the Iranian nuclear program. (Last time I checked, by the way, Iran was a sovereign nation with every right to develop nuclear energy and, unlike Israel, IS a member of the IAEA,) This Iran fantasy that is being disseminated hourly in U-S media, could help ignite a MIddle East conflict that will make Iraq and Afghanistan seem like child's play. It is eerily similar to the Bush administration's propaganda campaign to gain support for the removal of Saddam Hussein. My question? Can you please keep hammering away on this issue by highlighting the actual facts about Iran, it's nuclear research and Israel's continuous oppression of Palestinians.
WHY does Israel fear Moshiach? WHO is #Moshiach(sm)? The Sages say "Yehoshua The Jew." That me Yehoshua Ya'acov; while Israel's government(s) say of him, "you're NOT a scientist." And "you're NOT a Rabbi." And "you're NOT a Jew." And "you're NOT Israel's and the world's Moshiach(sm)." The Sage WHO twice Blessed Bibi to become PM Blessed Yehoshua Moshiach(sm). The jjealous Shimon Peres, who is a COVERT communist, many Jews fearingly old that he is TODAY'S "Haman," and Moshiach(sm) is our Mordechai, in the Purim story, as he is te one WHO would NOT bow to Peres. AFTER 24 years of "house arrest" in a few days it's Purim, and the story of the centrury is NOW breaking in Jerusalem; and so come to Jerusalem and interviiew the world's authentic leader, as here he is, NOT there, since he'll NOT go there, anytime soon; under "house arrest." Blessings, yy
Actually as Baba Sali and others have predicted Moshiach did already arrive in 5771, but he has not yet declared himself openly. Each person needs to recognize Moshiach for himself. This may not be that easy, since he will appear as an ordinary man, still incognito, until most people acknowledge him. The way to recognize him is thru his words or the message that he brings – the message of peace, brotherhood and justice. See http://www.moshiachishere.org/
Will the secession of Eastern Libya be the start of the fragmentation of the Arab world into tribal and ethnic units that will no longer respect the borderlines that were created by colonial powers?
Many Q's yet to come..Thank You for all you Do....
1) Do you consider Palestine to be an modern apartheid state? Is this too harsh of a term? Do you personally think there will ever be a solution to this never ending saga? It seems that both sides wont give up enough to keep the other party happy, yet compromise is the only way forward.
2) Do you consider Pakistan to be a failed state? It has never lived up to the once envisioned "Jinnah's Pakistan" considering the current atrocities committed against minorities like Ahmadis, Shias and Hindus.
Dear Mr. Fareed,
I´m a student od the foreign affairs and I´m writing my disertation about the conflict in Syria. I would like to ask you if is the whole conflict just the cause of the president Assad or it´s a problem of the whole society, economy and the heterogenity of the society? I can´t understand it clearly.
Thank you very much for your answer
Bibi Netanyahu told President Obama:"our enemies are your enemies". Do you agree with him? I don't. Palestinians as well as Muslims all over the world are enemies of Israel because of Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and its annexation of Islam's third holiest shrine. Are they our enemies? No. Then why is he feeding lies to the American people?
The Republican race so far has been surrounded with a large focus on social issues revolving around religious faith. Once a nominee wins and gears up for a run against President Obama, do you think the tone will shift to more "day-to-day" topics like the economy, foreign policy and such, or will faith based discussions still dominate Republican rhetoric?
It is extremly diffecult for non – Americans to understand why America can not put more pressure on especially Israel to make harder efforts to make peace wiht their neighbours. Considering this conflict in the middle east is the "petrol station fueling the hate between the muslim and westen world" ?
Indeed Kjetil, we Europeans, who oppose Israel's aggression are classifled as anti-Semitists.
I have such a high respect for you and your knowledge that I would like to see your top Questions answered by you. I know you can come up with at least 5! I will be very interested to see your response.
Thank you in advance.
Are you bothered by high frequency computer trading on the New york Stock Exchange. If it was only a few percent of trades maybe I could be talked into ignoring it; but I have heard in the media that it amounts to over 50% of the trades. It seems to me to be an example of the crazy behavior of Wall St. gamblers.
Do you think that Balkan could still be a factor of stability after Macedonia won't get the so deserved NATO member place in Chicago summit in May, only because of Greeks' game with its name which is more or less the same as they play with the national economy hoping that EU officials won't ever discover it? They have just lost Hague suit vs Macedonia and still threat that will again put veto to the Macedonia's membership.
Do you think the upcoming change of leadership in China will lead to improvements for the people of Tibet?
In the past 12 months , there has been 25 self-immolations in that region reported from Amnesty International and the SaveTibet Organization. What should be done to stop this tragedy?
Hi Fareed!
Your last insight on " U.S policy in Afghanistan and Afghan national security forces" was based on poor analysis. The ANSF doctrine is based on "ethnicity balance" which allows all ethnics enter the ANSF. How the U.S will deal with all drug cartels and Haqqani, Hekmatyar loyalists posed as President Karzai's advisers and ministers? Is Afghanistan in the verge of Talibanization again? Thanks!
What should be the response to an Iranian attack on Israel , either directly or through it's terrorist surrogates from the US? If you do not believe that Iran would attack, what is the rationale for that belief? If Iran uses say chemical weapons, what should be Israel's response (assuming it is functioning)? What should the US response be? Everyone, including yourself, is promising..promising Israel that no attack is forthcoming. Are you willing to guarantee it?
What is the future of the global financial order? What role will emerging powers (BRIC) play?
There is a lot of dissension about whether or not the US should take an unilateral intervention in Syria. It sounds like war mongering to me and I don't understand why US intervention should be preferable to an international response through the UN. Am I missing something?
Fareed, what do you think about the position of the Republicans who are suggesting that President Obama takes this country to war against Iran?
How do you evaluate the last four years of Turkish foreign policy? Turkey initiated a new vision with the goal of zero problem with neighbors, yet currently it has problem with almost all of their neighbors.
Should the US press Turkey to provide greater cultural and political rights for its Kurdish community?
Is there a way for Iran to mothball their nuclear program a year short of possible deployment that would satisfy both internal politics and external inspectors?
Would we benefit from a presidential candidate in November that is more liberal than Obama – perhaps Ralph Nader?
Chinese and Asia Pacific policy for the West, I'm an Australian Fareed and myself and a huge number of my countrymen have grave concerns about our own future along with our ties to the Anglo sphere being severed by a rapidly encroaching and economically over powering China, can you give me further insights into what is likely to happen with the Asia pacific and Australia, should I be worried?
There's much talk about the economic boom happening in Southeast Asia. Now, the U.S. is turning its investment sights to Southeast Asia as well, specifically Laos, a country that also has a long shared history with the CIA during the Vietnam War era and a country where China already holds strong influence and control of its natural resources. Where do you see this venture going? Is Southeast Asia where the U.S. and China will ultimately clash in the pursuit for economic dominance?
How can citizens of the US get informed? Simple, clear-cut comparisons need to be heard by the people. The GOP support would plummet if the people of America really knew the effects of what the GOP field is suggesting they would do if elected.
What comes after globalization?
Dear Farred. Isn't politics about interests? One supports something or someone to seek an interest and receive something in return. My question is very simple: what is United States' national interest in supporting Israel?
And if you can't discuss this topic on CNN, it's OK, I understand. I'm a big fan.
Well said,,, but he doesn't answer this question!
Hi Fareed,
I live in Ontario, Canada, a province which has such a high deficit that it is likely to become the next Greece. However, people here seem oblivious to the problem and keep voting for the same Premier, who has been steadily ruining Ontario's chances for the past nine years, just because he promises more social programs and hands out money. Notice that other parallel with Greece. When I think about the problem, it seems that the blame really shouldn't be put on the people in charge in this case. After all, they're only there because the public is voting for them, and the ones in charge are just keeping their promises, detrimental though the consequences are. Do you think, then, that the problem with Ontario, Greece, and (in my opinion) what is soon to be America, is that the voting public is irresponsible? That the voting public is to blame for the economic problems of North America and Europe? I hate to think that, but that's what it seems like to me. Perhaps a change isn't necessary from the people in charge, but average citizens. I would really appreciate your thoughts on that.
Are you fundamentally optimistic or pessimistic concerning global trends since the end of the Cold War?
Will nuclear deterrence be enough to keep Israel safe?
With supply route to Afghanistan suspended and gas pipeline project with Iran made headway, Pakistan is shifting towards anti-American policy. Is Pakistan looking to build a new bloc with Russia, China, Iran and few other countries? Is it going to be another cold decade between Pakistan and U.S.A., like 90s?
It would be very interesting to research which party members, the Democratic or Republican, had the highest incidents of scandals and corruption.
If you were educating young children today, what would their education include?
Given the last two years in the Senate, Republicans appear to believe they know how much government (and what kind) the majority of people want. Since enough of us voted for Obama to elect him (and therefore don't agree with the Republican opposition) do you think it's possible for a 2012 presidential debate in which the focus would be on what the candidates feel is the best approach to representing the majority of the people, as opposed to protecting their ideology or their base? In other words, do you see a road toward at least IMPROVED civility and willingness to compromise?
I am immensely amazed that American politicians, Republicans and democrats, are so unbelievably and shamelessly competing in their pandering to AIPAC and Natanyahu – so much that one forgets who's the superpower here and who's not. What amazes me is that this has been going on for so long and so clearly while no one, in American politics or even media is being shocked or expressing any degree of repulsion, disgust or dismay at this display of disgraceful behavior. Is this insane and undignified behavior befitting of the world's greatest superpower??
Two questions:
1) Does the current combined US/Israeli posture – a large, determined player enforcing its will through sanctions but open to negotiation and a smaller, more fiercely posturing player providing a credible and unpredictable threat of military action – provide an ideal incentive for Khameini to sit down for negotiations without losing face? If not, what actions should the US and Israel take to bring Iran to the table?
2) Assuming a peaceful, civilian Iranian nuclear program is an acceptable negotiated outcome for the US, could you describe the scope of oversight from the IAEA and/or other bodies that would provide certainty of non-weaponization and be acceptable to the three key players in this drama?
With current global economic uncertainty and political instability in middle east, is it wise for the US to spend on another new war (Iran and Syria) or would you rather prefer spending on Space exploration and development. Like in the Apollo missions during cold war, will this prosper the US economy and super power status? Or will it end up as temporary blossom with nothing to be gained in return other than new cutting edge technologies? With Putin back, I see a strong tie up between China and Russia whose prime focus would be to gain over global supremacy in this world and beyond . In short, is Gingrich’s moon spa, a reasonable investment for the US?
Will the US's engagement in Syria, trigger 21st century's first world war? Already China and Russia vetoed. Putin got elected making their political system stronger. Israel seriously pursuing to strike Iran. Iraq, Egypt and Libya yet attain their stability after the spring. I fear this is plausible.
My question is a simple one: Will the world be a better place by the end of the 21st century? Why or why not?
I'm a big fan from Ottawa, Canada who hopes you'll come to the GREAT CAPITAL of CANADA one day.
Maybe I'll get to meet you at a lecture or a book signing or something.
That would be a dream come true.
I think a third-class banana republic would be embarrassed to see its politicians, on the right and the left, pandering and pimping themselves so shamefully to make AIPAC happy in this election year. Politicians of this low-caliber of integrity, pride and dignity shouldn't have the right nor the nerve to stand up and lecture the world on human rights, dignity and right and wrong.
Wellcoming you, Sir.
1) Mr.Zak; since the last few Years, the Presidential elections in America, where the Jewish Communities are located, the Jewish Communities vote is based on the Jewish State interest.
Aren't we all American, under American Law???
Next time, the Chinese communities and others will ask the same question.
2) Our US Troops are just returned from Two big Wars. They are not even fully reunited with their Families, relatives and friends yet. Now, the Politicians are tried to send them back into Two wars. What is going on??
3) With respect to the Jewish State, is there any way to make Arabs to respect the Jewish State and its People?? Historically, some of the new Arab Countries never existed before. The Map of Israel was many times larger than the current one.
Have you or will you ever attempt interviewing Ahmadinejad? I'd like to see how he tackles the tough questions in response to you as a more intelligent and informed journalist than he's had interviews with before.
He did, and it was awesome–> http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2011/10/22/ahmadinejad-on-gadhafi-syria-alleged-plot-nuclear-weapons-and-americas-role/
How do you see the new dynamics play out in Afghanistan, after the Nato pull out? In particular, the jostling for power between the Civillian Government and the Pakistan Army, will this alter the ability of pakistan to influence events in Kabul?
hi Fareed
in regard to the unest in syria
it is alarming to me that christian and other minorities are still lined up behind the Assad regime who for long time portrayed itself as the secular knight who will protect them from the sunni dragon.
what is in your opinion the way to bring those factions so we can tip the social balance toward the popular uprising
regards
It seems like all the criteria that Prime Minister Netanyahu has laid out for preconditions to an attack on Israel have been met, and that all that's left is for cabinet to agree on a timetable. What are the chances cabinet will move ahead? It seems some Israeli leaders see attacking Iran as being almost as risky for Israel as not attacking.
The recent agreement between North Korea and the US regarding North Korea's nuclear program is a great step in the right direction for global non-proliferation. Do you think similar agreements could be made between the US and other countries such as Pakistan or Iran? Perhaps not with food aid but some other peaceful incentive?
Hi Fareed,
Moving into the second decade of the 21st Century, Australia is well placed to benefit from both America's 'pivot' toward Asia and Asia's growth (China in particular). I am very interested in finding out your opinion on how Australia might balance their priorities, including strengthening the alliance with the United States and our own economic interests with China, especially if competing interests were to become more intense between the two in the South China Sea. Any feedback is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike.
Fareed, do you believe that the broader Pakistani public is currently undergoing a process of radicalization? If the public is shifting in this direction, what do you see in the future of Pakistan? What will be the role of Pakistan's traditionally spiritual brand of Islam as radicalism continues to strengthen its hold on the minds of Pakistanis of all classes?
India won its independence through non violence which was followed by many all over the world, civil rights movement was won with non violence. Why people are speaking for threat of action against Syria? Can they not try non violent civil disobedience?
What do you think the primary driver is behind US foreign policy?
Thank you for everything you do Mr. Zakaria! My question is simple, why isn't Canada more of a big player in the world? You describe them as benign in your book yet they have an tons of natural resources and the some of the safest banks in the world.
Just my view.
Canada is a Great Country. I took some Courses there. I do have also relatives. It is the Second largest Country in the World, next to Russia. Its Population is the same as the State of California. It is still under British Rule and their Law is as well connected with BNA Act (British North American). Thanks to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

I guess, more profitable Companies in Canada, belongs to US. That makes a huge difference, who could be seen Globally.
Take example:-
1) Hudson Bay General; established in the 1600's, sold to US Company. The owner is Mr.Zakaria, the Billioner who is the native of Chicago, he passed away few Years ago. At early age in his late 50;
2) Former Eaton-Centre, belongs to Eatons' Family, bankrupted Twice and bailed-out by Canadian Government. For the Third time when it goes bankrupted, because the Two Brothers can't managed it, it has been bought by American Company Sears;
3) Tim Horton, originally own by the famous Canadian Hockey player, based in Oakvile-Ontario, Canada. Several years after he passed away, his Wife sold the entire Corporation to Wendy Restaurant, based in Ohio;
4) ESSO gas stations; etc... The lists are too much. That's why US is making more Money in Canada itself than Canadian Companies.
Fareed,
Do you foresee a time in the short to medium term in which the media, cultural and financial powers in the U.S. will shift away from New York City, the Northeast and Washington D.C., or, at the bare minimum, these locations becoming less relevant for guiding political action in America?
What would it take for the US citizens and government to consciously and carefully weigh a decisión to opt for another military intervention – like bombing Iran – against deepening further the blackhole of fiscal deficit?
Why U.S is not taking initiatives to help India to play a grater role to stabilise the situation in Middle East and Asia.Need to consider India not only in terms of economy but also a nation with diverse population will certainly help to create greater peace in Asia and middle east.G.W.Bush had recognised this importance and made indo america relation an important relation .I think Obama should recognise this and should build a more stronger relationship with India because last 5 years there was not a considerable engagement with India.
Always your fan.
Dear Mr. Zak;
1) Yesterday, Pakistan tested a short range sophisticated Missile, a day after India tested One. Don't you think the Pakistan Nuclear required American supervision?
2) When it comes to Natural or Human disasters that occur anywhere in the Globe, all Eyes are on America. But, when it comes to International Peace keeping and Security, it is just different story. Is it the Smart way for other Countries to abandoned America alone??
3) Peace up on them, My Ancestors built very expensive Orthodox Churches in Alexandria- Egypt, Khartoum-Sudan, Sabbah-Yiemen, etc... But, Saudi-Arabia King is not allowed US to build Church, while he funds Thousands of Mosques that has been built in America, Canada, Europe, Ethiopia, etc. Is there anyway to convince him?? I have relatives who would like to built Orthodox Church in Saudi-Arabia.
To be honest, before the discovery of Saudi-Oil, those people were Refugee and panhandlers in Ethiopia.
Do we just want to go to war here and go to war there that easily? ... do we care about the posibility of bankrupting this country (we are half way there) ... is bankrupting the country a real and present danger to the Unted States of America that should be more of concerns? Do we have firm proof of Iran has nuclear weapon or on a firm path of getting one? Why N Korea's present and real nuclear weapon does not get the same attention? How about Pakistan? Does Iseal have nuclear weapon?
I teach a high school course called "Rise of the Rest." This is, of course, named after the concept you coined in The Post-American World. This week, we are holding a mock-hearing of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Students are exploring the following questions and I know they've love to get your insight!
What should be the policy of the US towards China? What should be our priorities (i.e. democracy and human rights; stability and trade; containment; and/or keeping our distance)?
Thanks!
Question: Do you believe that the Obama Adminsitration and particularily Barack Obama's timid or no response to the new Cambodian/Khmer Rouge slaughter house – that is Syria today is a manifestation of a "minority or a half a minority" President of the US sympathesing with the minority rule and butchery of Bashar Al-Assad of Syria?
Also!!! What is this talks about Al-Qaida in Iraq in Syria question. Is it not that the same organization was created by the Syrian ruler and his many secret police services to combat our troops in Iraq as well as the Iraqi army and police forces and civilians. Is it not that the crurrent US, Obama Administration, and before them the G.W. Bush Administrattion who highly suggested that Al-Qaida in Iraq is the creation of the Syrian regieme....what is going on!!!???
Last, Is the Obama Adminsitration is using the excuse of Al-Qaida in Iraq in Syria for their lack of bravery or otherwise for not getting involved in Syria???
Actually, I have two questions and can't decide between them as they are both so important.
1) What, if any, success are we having getting China to actually adhere to fair trade practices (i.e. not having govt underwrite business falsely lowering price)
2) If the Israeli government decides to attack Iran is there any hope of us not entering into the fray? I thiink we should let them pay the price for that kind of aggressive stupidity.
There are many issues that we face that affect our daily lives and it seems many are intertwined with the others. What is the number one issue that will affect the world's economy during the next year? Is there any organizations or government programs (world-wide) that are assembled who may have some solutions to stabilize the world economies and will major powers listen?
How is it looking these days for American relations with Brazil? What do you envision this relationship to be like a few years down the road?
Who is you bottom line go-to person to shed insight on the U.S. and world economy? on political forecasting? on the Middle East Arab awakening? Thanx
Do you believe the balence of power in the Senate and House of Representatives will shift drastically enough to give the democrats enough votes to push through their agenda and if not will we see 2 more years of nothing getting done or actual compromise since the Republicans are done campaigning against Obama?
The media is always buzzing about the BRICs and other potential contenders for inclusion like Indonesia or Turkey. Which countries should we be paying attention that the media isn't covering? Why?
Here's my take on the Iranian Nuclear
Q: FIRSTLY, are we willing to trust Iran with Nuclear weapons?
A: No way! Else risk having a volatile ME brimming with nukes in tha hands of unstable Islamic radical regimes!
and they will send the nuc to syrian thugs and killers and we saw what the shiia killers can do as they kill there own people
Q: Can we let diplomacy go on right until the point Iran gets nukes?
A: No way, we need to stop them right at their tracks! we must attack iran and syria now and keep israel and middleast safe and keep the world safe from the evil shiia and iranian thugs
Q: Is a war in the ME now more disastrous than after Iran has developed nukes?
A: Clearly NOT!
Q: Will a war with Iran now cause major upheaval, increase terror against Americans all over the world incl. terror right here in America from homegrown Islamic radicals?
A: No . But it may just be necessary to prevent potential major catastrophe or even a WW3 later on. iran is a paper tiger they do have more than 45 opposition groups we can use them to attack iran from the inside among them the arabestan province , the sunni in iran, the kurdish in iran, the lures and turks, the assyrians, the stuudents and women movments, the bahaii and persians egtc.....we must help the iraqi sunni to destroy the iran interests behind the lione.
Q: Is war the only answer to stop them?
A:yes! as diplomacy will never work with iran and syria or any shiia , they are an evil liers, they call lies taqeya, there god called ali and hussain!!!
dont allow iranians to come to usa canada or any where for any reason that include the iraqi shiia and syrian shiia thuygs.
Q: Is it time to strike Iran?
A:yes 100% as the arab spring rising and the sunni arabs will help to attack the shiia interests, saudi arabia and gulf states will pump more oil 3 time more to offset iran oil problem so no worry about oil flow and price.
Q:What do we mean by Iranian compliance?
A: STOP enrichment beyond 3.5% and surrender in a verifiable manner all stocks of enriched Uranium above 3.5%
Dismantle their underground enrichment plants in Qom and other places. Allow IAEA inspectors unfettered access to all facilities. THEY WILL NEVER DO THAT MARK MY WORDS DONT BE FOOL ATTACK NOW....OBAMA WILL NOT ATTACK THE REASON BECAUSE HE HAS A NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE AND HE WILL KEEP THAT IMAGE OF PEACE , BUT THAT WILL DESTROY THE WORLD....WAKE UP OBAMA
DONT TRUST IRAN AND THE SHIIA
Until we do all these the world can never be safe from ISLAMIC NUCLEAR BLACKMAIL !!!!!
Are willing to go to war YOUSELF and send your kids and relatives? Are you just want use your influence on Ameicans and American power, and send Americans to fight so you can watch and be happy? I think nuclear Iran will create a balance of power in the region.
Corr, Or.
1)Syria- Why is the US not imposing no fly zones like they did over Libya? I don't get it..why the western powers suddenly turned hostile towards the dictators..and almost paved the way for Islamization of the "freed" countries from Egypt -Tunisia?
2)Iran-This sabre rattling on both sides is giving the world economy the jitters with oil ruling over $125 a barrel..what do you think is going to happen..given that Iran will become a nuclear state sooner or later?
3)Euro zone and US – the liquidity pumped in and the incredible low rates of interest have made the world awash with cash.w/o assets to show for it..what do you think will be the fall out?
4)China- will try to cover themselves from future shocks by making inroads into mineral rich countries..which country do you think will be able to balance China out given that US is on its wane?
I would like to know what happens next to the Palestinians now that all the news are about Iran? Will they ever see an Independent State?
Would really appreciate it if you could recommend some interesting books for people who are a bit behind with global politics !
Do you think Israel will attack Iran in 2012? If so, what would be the ramifications of the attack?
What policies can the US do to grow long term economically? Should we invest in green energy and infrastructure or focus on reducing the deficit?
Salam Fareed,
I would love to have your opinion on whether or not tighter fiscal unity is truly a necessary evil to keep the euro afloat and will they submit? From my point of view, the economy of the a nation is intertwined with politics. In the aspect of politics Europe and escpecially the Euro Zone is divided. How can we trully save the euro? Is it worth compromising economical and most probably in the future political freedom? Or should the euro just be dissolved? And if it is how will it affect other European countries and the rest of the world? You insight would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.
For the last 6 years, negotiations with Iran have gotten no where mainly because the two sides could not even agree on the very pre-conditions for talks, mainly the West insists that Iran halts its enrichment before they can talk, and Iran says halting is not a pre-condition, rather should come out of the negotiations. How is this 6-year old dilemma being handled this time around?
2. We used to hear about a carrot and stick policy. Now days, there is only talk of stick and bigger stick. Are there any carrots offered to Iran? If so, what kind of package is being offered and how come we do not hear this side of the story any more?
Regards.
I want to ask some questions 1) You went in Harvard university , read book and you believed all ? forgot who are you ? 2)Double standard is logical and intellectual consequence of Liberal Democracy ? 3) Israel & USA is greater evil @ Noam Chomsky . Israel has nuclear warhead , did not sign NPT , how Israel tells another nation about Nuke . How funny 4.) USA wants to invade Syria for Humantarian aid .but Bahrain and Soudi regime are also violating Human rights and repressing protesters , why News media is silent ? Is it not double standard ? So write , president Obama , help Bahrain 5) after Islamist coming at power , why now western media is shouting for Egyptian people Human rights , freedom ? During Hosni Mubarok era , do they have any freedom ? Why USA helped Hosni Mubarok to stay at power ? Is it double standard . Do everything as you can to steal other nation natural resource and become imperialist force to grab all business . But who will punish these criminal . Nope there is no God .
I think nuclear Iran will create a balance of power in the region. No Country , including Iran, is stupid enough to go to war with another nuclear country, in this case , Israel . This is just a propaganda so we can send more of our tax payer money to that region. Tax payers of America wake up! We can contain Iran, even if they become nuclear.
The war games go on, and we always need and enemy to justify the war, so exporters of weapons and can make the money. And who is the biggest importer and exporter of weapons in that region? You guessed it!
Fareed, what do you think, why did president Obama finished his AIPAC speech with: "God bless the people of Israel, God bless USA". What did he meant saying "people of Israel" – does that include Palestinians, or he meant American Jews?
FZ, Is our election process broken, considering its now guided by monetary forces, and less by the character and vision of the leader? Our primary process confuses Fact and Opinion, and the magic of the moment is won by sound bytes and slip ups. I can't see how we'll get a leader our of the process. Do we need to rewrite election rules?.
Is the rumor true that Saudi Arabia will attempt to keep oil prices as low as possible to assure a second Obama Administration? (I read your books and articles, watch your show, subscribe to GPS and believe you are one of the most authentic commentators we have!
Why does the US have the bond that it has with Israel?
Hello Fareed!
China has now increased its defence budget to over USD 100 billion. India has also increased its defence budget, China's is still 3 times that of India's. Many believe that insecurity is rising in the region. Your thoughts on what might be the new-age Cold War?
What effect have the austerity measures had in Europe?
why lot of central bank of countries like Isreal, south korea etc are planning to invest in equities ? and its effects? are we in deflation ?
Salaam Fareed,
Do you think the uprising in Syria is directed by someone else ? In my opinion, looking at what happened in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, not even Syrian government but any government would think twice before starting to kill innocent civilians.
Secondly, wouldnt it be a good idea for all the middle eastern nations/kingdoms to form a Union and establish a Caliphate, bring everyone under ONE umbrella AGAIN(emphasis on AGAIN) and make sure that atrocities to civilians wont happen and peace and harmony maintained across the world?
God knows best!
JS.
Have u seen New Yorker article Magic Mountain, Mar 5, re Davos? This paints an unflattering portrait of a communion of elitists, wonks and compulsive conferees from the. 01 percent. Does a Davos mean anything? If so, is it a bad thing that some artifice like this matters?
My husband and I enjoy your show very much.
Would you discuss your thoughts on how global leaders and average citizens can reduce the "trust deficit" in this new interconnected global community? How might a global morality and code of ethics that crosses cultural ideological, and religious divisions evolve?
Thank you for offering balanced, thoughtful discourse on current events, and for this opportunity for your audience to participate in the dialogue.
To me the problem with video cameras in the supreme court is that less-than-scrupulous people will take video clips out of context and use them for media campaigns to impeach the justices, or to incite demonstrations at the houses of the justices, etc.. In order to protect themselves from such attacks, they would be under pressure to censor themselves in front of the cameras. Would it be legal for such videos to be licensed only for online viewing at the supreme court web-site (in much the same way commercial content is licensed), thus at least keeping the video clips off of shows like yours? Would such a thing work?
With the American Economy starting to glitter , will president Obama take undue risk in supporting Israel for an unilateral strike against Iran
Fareed,
past years of recession in 2008, US prints money in trillions for QE, now European abyss see printing another Trilliln Euro. if nation fails, bailout is on the table. i m getting bored on the outcome as to why this happen , next generation needless to study or work hard waiting the goverment to give and take and drive the world crazy. What is your advise to generation alpha and beta to look up for goal in their life in the future outlook smeared by current financial mess? Does next generation need to work and study hard for national productivity and efficiency? Does the future hold any promise in education, looking at the fact that a current professor pay can not even owns him a equvalent grammes of gold compared to those lesseducated labour in the 70s? What is your advise to current teenagers , what advise you will give to children as a parent for them to survie future outlook? Thanks in advance.
from a father.
As an analyst, how do you see the future unfold in the next few months leading up to the US election including US/Global economy, Syrian conflict, pending Israel strike on Iran? In other words, are things moving toward normality or abnormality?
I look forward to your comments in Time, CNN and Facebook. Thank you!
Do you think Iran is behaving with one eye on the upcoming US elections? Are they trying to influence them? Do they think they will get a better deal with Obama than with the Republicans? Or do the Iranians think whoever is President makes no difference?
I appreciate your thoughts.
Patrick Buchanan once referred to the US Congress as occupied territory. His reference was to the political power of AIPAC. There is a significant group of people who believe that the Jews have guilefully taken effective control over the political process in, primarily the US, but also much of the wider Western World. They have accomplished this by owning or controlling the mass media and using it to sway and influence public opinion to their own ends. Of course too, AIPAC is a highly sophisticated and well monied organization that wields a harsh stick of discipline and the sweet carrot of lucre.
To put this in the format of a question: Those of us so concerned, are we right or wrong? Or, are we paranoid or anti-Semitic? Or is the question to controversial and to politically incorrect to honestly address in a public forum?
Note: Yes, the Christian Zionists are, as the term indicates, at one with AIPAC. But! There is scholarship that indicates that Dispensation, the theology that steers Christians to support Israel and the Jewish people, was inserted into Christianity by Jews, via the Scofield annotated bible, about the year 1907, for the explicit purpose of garnering Christian support for the establishment of the Jewish State.
Perhaps this sounds a bit far fetched, but also, in fact, quite recently, the Jews have produced another self serving Christian Bible. The JANT, the Jewish annotated new testament.
Yes, it is obvious that Israel has many supporters in congress, or they wouldn't be rattling their saber. They would be afraid, but they have bought congress and the US and even the president. It's disgusting to see this country let political interests move its decisions. We need to stop these people from driving our country and take over and do what's best for us. We're only discussing the issue of Iran because ISRAEL wants to talk about it.... but it's nowhere in our interests to threaten with war. Or maybe our president has amnesia, having forgotten the disastrous war we began in 2003 and still can't get out of. If we don't change our political system, this country will have an end just like the Roman Empire.
How much good would a sustainable Israeli-Palestinian peace solution represent to the regional and global security, and which actors would benefit most of a regional stability besides Israel? And who will benefit less?
Looking at the mass protests that have become a common occurence around the world, I get the impression of a deeply interconnected and unknowingly empowered world that is stumbling out of bed and slowly waking up. What kind of changes do you see this having on traditional political structures in the long term?
Also, I can't help but wonder if you can see yourself getting more directly involved in politics. If offered, would you ever consider a cabinet position?
Granting the controversial nature of this subject matter, in as much as Israel and AIPAC are lobbying hard for the US to take up arms for the state of Israel, this matter is of the utmost importance and warrants high level public and plain discourse.
As regards the Christian Zionist thrall to Zionist Judaism: I would further submit that the Christian command to have faith, renders them intellectually crippled. They are thus rendered incapable of critical thinking and by that stricture not responsible for their actions: The grave consequences notwithstanding.
MR ZAKARIA,
DOES AMERICA VALUE MELES, PRIME MINISTER OF ETHIOPIA? IF SO HOW DOES HE GET SOME LOOSE SCRUTINY FROM USA WHEN MELES INTERFERS IN MUSLIM'S LIFE IN ETHIOPIA. WHY DONT YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT THE AH BASH MOVEMENT IS AND HOW AMERICA VIEWS ETHIOPIANS CURRENT MOVEMENT OPPOSING THE ACTIONS OF THE PRIME MINISTER IN INDOCTRINATONG OUR MUSLIM WAY OF LIFE. WE ETHIOPIAN MUSLIMS GET COUNTED AS HALF CITIZENS AND OUR POPULATION NUMBER SYSTEMATICALLY REDUCED. WILL NOT THIS ENDANGED OUR OWN SECURITY IF COPTIC CHRISTIANS KINGS LABEL US TERRORISTS IF WE GO TO MESJID.
That's not TRUE, Brother. This is CNN, not Nazret.com
What do China and Russia see as their "end-game" (or plan to combat the western world) by diplomatically supporting Syria, Iran, and North Korea? Surely, a military partnership with countries like Iran and Syria do little do contrast the power of NATO. Further, the economic ties aren't strong enough (in scope of world trade) to warrant such unconditional support for autocratic regimes.
Hi Fareed,
Great fan of the show! I'm curious what your take is on the recent political changes throughout Burma. While the military still seems to have a good seize of the country's direction, the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the reforms of Thein Sein seem to be a push in the right direction. It is almost as if things in Burma, for once, are looking up.
What do you make of these changes? Do you think the political reforms will continue or that this ecstacy of democracy and reform will end soon?
Thank you!
Take a closer look at Mitt Romney... Do you not get the sense he is the most underrated candidate ever? Decades of more experience than Obama, and look at how he just won Massachussets where they lnow him best!
Thanks for your input.
Do you see Pakistan becoming more radicalised in the next five years? Will Pakistan be worse off or better off in the future?
What, in your opinion, drives the unrelenting attack by conservatives on womens healthcare & reproductive rights? Does the religious right (& their businesses) have a leg to stand on in their assertion that providing insured birthcontrol to women threatens their "religious freedom," (while providing ED meds for men, strangely doesn't)? Ok, that was 2 questions, but it's kind of a "2-parter", since the issues go hand in hand! Thanks for your consideration!!
Will Obama be forced to go to war with Iran to strengthen his 2012 big and also due to AIPAC's clout?
why is iran always found on the wrong side of the history?
Do you know the islam movement in Ethipia? They stand for freedom of their belive agnist the government who interfer in personal relgion cases.
Zak, why not you look in this issue? Every Friady more than 200k muslims demonstrate in Addis Ababa. Is the Arebs movement only important for you guys? If not, we hear soon from you! Thanks!
You puked at Nazret.com website and you went to...
Get back! Layer!
is that true only 25% of the American people saw the other part of the world specially Europe ? if it is, may be that is the reason majority of the American people didn't support the universal healthcare ,they didn't see how it works in all Europe even in south Africa?
HI Fareed
is that true only 25% of the American people saw the other part of the world specially Europe ? if it is, may be that is the reason majority of the American people didn't support the universal healthcare ,they didn't see how it works in all Europe even in south Africa?
Do you think arresting Joseph Kony will bring peace to Central Africa? If he is arrested, will this be the first time in history that young Americans and social media directly influence US foreign policy? Context: http://kony2012.com/ (social media campaign lobbying for the arrest Joseph Kony); http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/136673/mareike-schomerus-tim-allen-and-koen-vlassenroot/obama-takes-on-the-lra?page=show (Foreign Affairs article written by leading LRA experts at the LSE)
Why don't you bring back The Future of Freedom? It is one of my most important books. I am still passing it around and giving away copies. The ideas about what it takes in a state to start a successful democracy, that it comes from a prosperous middle class with a stable government, and must be handled with care are all lessons we need.
There is a notion that a democratic form of government can be plunked down in anyplace that has never had self-rule before, without strong courts or law, and it will just magically take root and grow and solve all problems. It don't work that way and the book tells the story.
The section on the dangers of direct government – initiatives and referendums – was extremely prescient. See California today and others to follow as people get fed up with their normal government, and are just sure they can do better. That don't work, either.
All good stuff – back to the book. Hooray for GPS – every Sunday morning.
Bob
Hello Farid, i do enjoy your investigative journalism... here's not a question, but a challenge for you! Why is the world not bothered by the extent of corruption in Pakistan? the likes of which are unsurpassed in the history of the sub-continent. Hazara went on hunger strike to protest against the corruption in India. In Pakistan, people are committing suicide because they are unable to feed their children – that is only due to funds, resources and other aid being mis-used – corruption prevails now from the lowest rung of the government ladder to the highest!
I, an Europeanl, am stuck in this country trying to save my brother's (American citizen) and my estate. People just decided to take over, throwing my tenants out. The judicial system takes forever and a day (I'm going to enter my 3rd year of litigation next month) and fake criminal suits are registered against totally innocent people in the process. The police turn a blind eye, initially because they are on the take, and then, when suits increase and the High court and Chief Justice of the province are informed of the violations, these people then turn to the politicians.. in my case two of the most corrupt and influential ministers of the province... even the Inspector General of Police can not do anything.. Human rights can not do anything, the Citizen police liaison director can not do anything, because as they all say, we are powerless when the home minister tells us so.... he, asked me for a cut... I refused, and now my life is in danger, I can not leave the country... and the Embassy can not help in a matter of a personal nature... unless of-course, I get imprisoned and sentenced to death... do matters have to go this far, before anyone can intervene? i have been warned not to go to PK media.. they will be hushed up by the ministers' friend, Mr. Zardari... and I have a 4 year old son with me.. we have become prisoners in our existence.. my only choice is give up my entire estate... in the process not only will my brother and I lose out, but my tenants, who are Hindus will risk their lives in retribution... this is complicated and of-course I can't provide all the details, suffice to say, the corruption issue in this country needs to be addressed, and it won't come from within... people are too frightened now of the government they now deem to act like the MAFIA!
Fareed, I have enjoyed your integrity for years. Like Edward R. Murrow without the cigarettes but with a smile! Would you check into the Fukushima meltdowns and give all of us an honest update on the very scarey and very ongoing nuke event there? Seems to be a near blackout on that story in our media.
Russia and the U.S. have good economic and military relations with India, however do you think that India will have to choose to side with Russia or the U.S. or is it possible to have good relations with both countries without upsetting either country? If India has to choose a side how does China play in to this?
Hi Fareed, I'm curious to know about the controversies you stir up just from doing what you do, ie reporting.
Can you share one of your more memorable situations in the past few years where your reporting got YOU into trouble?
I'm a big fan of GPS and I'm turning all my family and friends onto it, keep up the great work and thank you.
India has nuclear weapons, Pakistan has nuclear weapons, China, Russia, France, Uk & USA has them, even Israel is believed to have them. Why is it hard for the world to believe that Iran may start producing nuclear weapons. Who are we to judge who deserves to be a nuclear power & who not. If Israel or USA or for that matter any other country attack Iran on this issue, they are the real people creating problems, and not Iran.
Dear Farid,
My question is," What interest China & Russia have, in vetoing US led UN Resolution on Syria? Do they have clear economic gains while dealing with current Syrian regime or they are doubtfull of the success of any action after the results seen in Libya or they are opposing it just because it is US sponsored?
Can the authoritarian models, for example in Russia and China, represent a threat to democracy in the world by giving ideas to wannabe dictators?
Sir, it would be very nice if you answer to my question.
Is Pakistan a failed state or not? Many Indian diplomats believe that it is not a failed state, but as the days are passing it is going down.
If the Pakistani people don't have a say in shaping their country's future, there's a risk that the country is sinking further more. The politicians are mercurial at best and opportunistic at worst.
Do societies play a vital role in the development of a country?
How can the United States remove the paralyzing (if not corrupting) influence of single-issue special interest groups from its government? Can it do it at all?
The world waited while Germany rearmed itself...all in the name of self-defense and national self-esteem following the Armistice in 1918. The result of waiting was more than six million innocent jews murdered by a fanatic who wrote his plan years earlier. Iran has made it clear through words and its ongoing sponsorship of Hamas and Hezbollah (not to mention the murderous Assad regime) that they are without honor, cannot be trusted, and will kill as many Jews (and Americans) they can. I can never forgive them for the Iran Hostage crisis. There support of terrorist acts through the 80's and 90's including the killing of an American in a wheelchair is a testament to the evil of the Iranian government.
When America, flag bearer of human rights will stop its violation of basic human rights in underdeveloped countries? Can UN stop American’s overt and covert intrusion in third world? If no then is there any justification of this big infrastructure, masterminds and influentials of UN?
what do you think about US policy toward Afghanistan..?? especially among united state presidential nominees ...
==> Fareed, please consider the topic of energy scarcity, and report on the latest Chinese developments in nuclear energy. After Fukushima, M9 earthquake, Tsunami, reactor disasters, political panics, media meltdowns, the anti-nuke holiday - all catnip for the windy/sunny bunch - now what?
As of 25 Jan 2011 the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched a development program for Thorium Fueled Molten Salt Reactors (TFMSR's). This is a truly "green" nuclear solution, thanks to Oak Ridge research done in 1965-1969. TFMSR's will not be an instant replacement for existing reactors, but they *will* be the best possible alternative. Please google "Energy From Thorium", "Thorium Energy Alliance", and "Flibe Energy" for comprehensive background material.
If you are aware of the KONY2012 movement I think mentioning it simply will do a lot of good. If this dream can succeed it will show the world the power people posess and it shows the shrinking borders of our world and the expansion of a global society.
http://www.Kony2012.com look it up if you are unaware this can Help our generation realize our potential and maybe after we accomplish this we can accomplish even more but only if we work as one.
KONY 2012!!!!
==> Fareed: Please consider the topic of energy scarcity, and report on the latest Chinese developments in nuclear energy. Only 1 billion of the 7 billion world population have the U.S. level of energy supply. As of 25 Jan 2011 the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched a development program for Thorium Fueled Molten Salt Reactors (TFMSR's). A Chinese delegation toured Oak Ridge National Lahs (ORNL) in November 2010 to do a reality check on ORNL research conducted in 1965-1969 (4 years of successful MSR operation). TFMSR's will not be an instant replacement for existing reactors, but they *will* be the best possible alternative - cheaper than coal; inherently and passively safe; and non-proliferating. TFMSR's are a truly "green" nuclear solution to energy scarcity. Please google "Energy From Thorium", "Thorium Energy Alliance", and "Flibe Energy" for comprehensive background material.
Fareed:
Please do comment on Latin American block against the USA, lead by Chavez with growing followers such as Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and soon to join others. What can USA do to win them back? Has the USA position in the region debilitated or adjusted to the new reality of not being the superpower anymore.
Thanks
Dear Fareed,
I've always wondered if the purveyors of nuclear non-proliferation and pre-emptive action against Iran have successfully elicited a transparent and pro-active response from Israel on her nuclear capabilities. Let's not just depend on rational behavior in the face of provocation. Not much seems to have been heard about this since Mordechai Vanunu's disclosure in the late '80s. Does Mr Assange have any information?
Thanks,
Mansoor
Why has the United States not developed stronger relations with India? That country appears to be a better bet for continuing partnership and mutual benefits than Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or Israel.
Meanwhile, the Republican campaign seems to be an Iran-Contra(ception) Affair!
Is China truly concerned about the welfare of its people and the sovereignty of its government, or are they weary to intervene because they want to keep their stance on non-intervention (much like the USA did pre-WWI) and do not want to become the global "police force" the USA is seen as?
Does it appear that global violence and discord are at a historic high or is this perception skewed do to modern communications technologies?
Many cycles seem to converge at this vector.
Best Regards,
Shawn Fitzgerald
Research on over-population among all mamaian species seems to support an hypothesis that there are "density thresholds" beyond which a given species begins to react in abnormal ways including extreme agression and infanticide. I strongly suspect that the world's human population densities in cities cross the threshold and trigger abnormal irrational agressive tendencies.
Is unplugging Iran from SWIFT the last option before military action
Has there been any time in history that a colony\satellite state has complete control over the parent country's foreign policy as Israeli does with US? you could include domestic policy affected with this relationship, but just wondering on foreign...
why there is always this option that Israel will strike Iran why couldn't it the oposite and Iran strike Israel ?. we know also that Israel, India and others have nuclear power why it is forbiden for an Islamic country such as Iran to have this power too,? we also know that if Israel strike Iran it will be an Islamic case and all the other islamic countrues will be on action. wright ?
Everyone knows that an American president has no way other than unqualified support for Israel strike on Iran before the election. Isn’t it a sign of weakness for American politics? How can the US be the world’s greatest power, and yet the US president has to make his decision on such an important issue based on the national interest of another country? The irony is that there appears to be an obvious conflict of interest between America and Israel on this issue.
Dear Mr. Fareed,
I'm asking this question, for I have seen the horrific videos of Syrian violence. Two boys were electrocuted,7500 people killed, and still the number is rising. Military officers are defecting. Homs turned in to hell. Unlike Libya, syrian people do not have weapons against the stronger military. They have been virtually suffocated. Aren't they Human beings?
Still, the West isn't intervening, why? Isn't it a double standard policy. Whole world knows Russia has lost credibility, not to talk about communist china. I feel intervening is the only option we've gotta pursue.
Dear M. Zakaria,
as the emerging country (espacially the BRIC(S)) are developing and tend to reach the top the global hierarchy, I think that the issue of the leading model (which was asked by Francis Fukuyama in 1992) is even more crucial for the "Global Public Square". Do you believe that we are going to witness a "big convergence" (that is to say the extension of democracy and capitalism in the World through the same path, as authors like Fukuyama, Rostow, or French Alexandre Kateb suggest it) OR a "big divergence" (that is to say the polarization of the world between two different model of developement (the western one, and perhaps a chinese or BRIC one (state capitalisme?), as Ian Bremmer suggest it in The end of free market).
I hope you will take time to answer, this question. Thanks
Looking ahead do you foresee a time when the Chinese leadership will face significant internal pressure to address labor and civil rights in their country? if so, what impact might this "Sino Spring" have on the world economy and balance of power?
I consider you biased when it comes to Pakistan army. For example in you blog of March 14 "Time to get real on Afghanistan", Pakistan army created the problem of Taliban 3 decades ago. It is half true. What about CIA role. There are other plenty of blogs. On the other hand Pakistani soldier are being killed. Have you ever mentioned that? The cost country have to face due to Afghan war on human lives and financially. The hit on already fragile economy. Pak economy will never achieve it goals until this war stops. Since you never mention these facts, I consider you bieased.
Fact: Israel Has Nukes.
Fact: Iran doesn't have Nukes or even the capability to make a single one.
Just want to know what the fuss is all about?
To raise the price of gas. The price of Imported goods or this is a dirty ploy for the republicans electioneering! !
Dear Mr. Zakaria:
I must say that as one of your former countrymen from India, and a fellow American today, I remain one of your greatest admirers (hnestly I can write a mega thesis on you!) …….albeit for totally different reasons.
Having said that, my question to you Mr. Zakaria is when will you come clean? that:
a) You are an Islamic soldier who goes by the dictums of the Muslim Ummah and nothing else matters to you?
b) You dislike (to put it mildly!) the Jewish state of Israel, or its supporters the US and the west and will stop at nothing to portray them in an unfavorable light while pretending to be even handed (with Israel) and an ardent patriot (of the US)?
c) You will support any Muslim cause directed at all non-Muslims (incl. the Kashmir militancy in your former homeland India) or at best find REASONS for Muslim atrocities (incl. 9/11 when after expressing shock & anger you came up with a host of articles incl. “How America over-reacted to 9-11”, “Why they hate us”, etc.).
I can provide numerous detailed examples from your writings/assertions on everyone of these!
Dear Mr.Zakaria:
Here are certain areas I believe are your greatest strengths!
a) To comment on things that you know absolutely nothing about!
(e.g.: Chavez’s Venezuela, or Castro’s Cuba).
b) Selectively cherry-pick facts from reputed sources and twisting/distorting the truth and quoting from well known biased sources to suit your story!
(e.g.: Your numerous references portraying Muslims as largely peaceful holding America responsible even for Al-Qaeda’s terror when you ASTOUNDINGLY CONCLUDED “The Danger comes NOT from them but from us” – ref. your story – “Reflections on 9/11 and its aftermath – Sep 9th 2011,
c) Your innumerable flip-flops and turn-coat journalism designed just to suit the occasion or your agenda!
(e.g. Your recent stories where you say once high oil prices are the reason for turmoil in ME and the exact opp. 2 days later, or your several assertions saying poverty is the root cause for Islamic terror, and then delinking that, or your assertions that MErn countries are not ready for democracy and praising dictators such as Mubarak and then saying the opposite, or your assertion that the US federal deficit is NOT all that bad citing examples of other countries that are worse off, and saying the exact opposite. Etc. There are just far too many such flip-flops to talk about.
d) Paying credence to self-serving studies/opinions to portray yourself as all fair & balanced but with a hidden agenda, allowing yourself just enough room to wriggle out of any situation by saying those were not your words. Plz. remember if it appears on your column and you don’t refute or agree with the assertions therein, you own them!
Hi Fareed. Here's a simple question I often wish was asked to members of both parties: In a "typical" year, what percentage of the U.S. GDP do you believe the Federal Government should spend? (I use the work "typical" to avoid exraordinary events like the recent recession). It's a simple question that begs a simple answer.
Mr. Zakaria,
What is the future of the U.S./Canada relationship? Obviously it would be nearly impossible for it to fall into disrepair due to proximity, the shared border, and the similarities in culture. But with the failure of the Keystone Pipeline, and the Canadian overtures to China to move the pipeline to the Pacific, is there any reason that the U.S. should be worried? What, if anything, should President Obama, or any future President do to in terms of economics, immigration, or defense with respect to Canada?
Best,
David
Mr. Zakaria,
How much US paid & suffer for its blind support of Israel & the double standard with Muslims & why US not think & solve the root causes of terrorism & Why US always used the Power to solve it, US already spent the trillions of $ & thousands of lives on so called war against terrorism & still blindly support & backing up Israel & create unrest & problems in Muslim world, the incident of 9/11 happened mostly due to the US blind support of the horrific war crimes & state terrorism of Israel & the double standard & unjustice with Muslim world, the wars of Afghanistan & Iraq proved too useless & stupid & same the interference in Pakistan, Iran, Yemen etc. due to this the economy & people of US suffers & tired too much but US still backs Israel & ignore its own public & the image of US in world specially in Muslim world, can its not better for US to look & solve the main root causes of terrorism & unjustice & stops the use of force & the blind support of Israel
Dear Mr. Zakaria:
Here are some more of my questions for you:
a) When will you call for minorities to be given equal rights in Muslim countries just the way I as a Hindu and you as a Muslim enjoy in this great nation?
b) When will you call on Saudi Arabia to allow building churches in their country even as they finance 55,000 sq.ft. “Mega Mosques” in places such as Murfeesboro, TN with barely 200 Muslim families, or the Cardoba Victory Mosque at the hallowed grounds of the WTC?
c) When will you ask Muslims in America & India to call themselves Americans or Indians FIRST and LAST?
d) When will you ask terrorist Hamas, Hezbollah to first recognize the right for the Jewish state to even exist before demanding land?
e) When will you ask Palestinians NOT to indoctrinate their children with hatredness for the Jewish people so that they grow up as loving citizens, rather than gun wielding terrorists?
f) When will you stop pretending that American Muslims are discriminated against even as none of the other minorities incl. Jews, Hindus, Buddhists etc. believe so?
To be contd...
The man is a reporter and an analysis, not an activist.
Yes, he's an analyst. Where are his articles analyzing these issues?
When are you going to take on the issue of Global Climate Change? It would seem to me that two billion in insurance losses attributed to the latest tornado outbreak at least a month earlier than "normal" for this type of thing along with the obvious rapid increases in this type of event should trigger world wide concern and help begin a process of mobilizing appropriate human responses.
If the Arab spring brings about real democracies, how long before we see Islamic political movements self destruct like we are seeing with the Christian Right?
What di you think will happen in Pakistan when the west pulls out of Afghanistan?
What happens if Israel does attack Iran ? What will be the likely side-effects ?
Everyone knows that an American president has no way other than unqualified support for Israel strike on Iran before the election. Isn’t it a sign of weakness for American politics? but still the US president is calling for peace but Netanyahu is obiosly want war on Iran .How can the US be the world’s greatest power, and yet the US president has to make his decision on such an important issue based on the national interest of another country?
A little late, however, my concern is about GMO food crops in the United States and in particular the incorporation of Agent Orange 2-4D herbicide in the seeds in the hopes of combating super weeds that other herbicide similarly used has helped to create. On top of this is the European ban on GMO crops while the U.S. goes merrily along on the enthusiasm train. I thought you might care to read the attached path's article: http://www.aaemonline.org/gmopost.html Very disturbing stuff because humans are animals as much as pigs, cattle and chickens are. I don't think we should destroy ourselves in the name of enriching Monsanto and Dow with dangerous stuff that actually hasn't proven to be beneficial. This entire practice is rediculous. It would be good to have a comment.
What will be the scenario once Iran gets its coveted nukes?
If anybody wants to suggest that, Israel already has it should not matter is only dreaming!
Mr. Zakaria already has said that refering to the US-USSR equilibrium.
A nuke in the hands of any of these radical Islamic regimes including Pakistan (who have declared their nukes as THE ISLAMIC BOMB and that ts it's for the protection of the ENTIRE MUSLIM UMMAH) is like a sword dangling over the free world.
Were Rush Limbaugh's remarks about Sandra Fluke slanderous? If yes, why is it that no one of sufficient power and financial might is taking Rush Limbaugh to court and hitting him in his pocketbook (where it might have him think-again before he speaks such slanderous remarks again on his radio show)?
Why the Muslims in Saudi-Arabia don't want to see beautiful Women booths and legs? They never obeyed the entire written Qur'an book, anyways?
I want shake my back in Mecca. I need Oil Money. Don't you think, I'm a I'm? Imam?
What is your view of the proposed "Promoting Reconciliation and Accountability in Sri Lanka" resolution in Geneva UNHRC led by the U.S.? What about India's apparent reluctance to support it?
Hi Fareed– I dont like that countries that believe in destruction of other countries should get nuclear weapons. Just because of that I believe we have every right to stop Iran from acquiring one. However my fundamental question is who gives a right to any country to push another sovereign country to say that they should not have nuclear weapon. I would say let them have it – they all know it is MAD (MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION) and no one will use the option– USSR never did.Neither has Pakistan or India.... there is a threat of using the weapon that keeps the country safe– Not sure if the west would have attacked Libya if they had a nuclear weapon!!! That is the reason why countries want to have one – it is an insurance against attack.
Don't you think that western powers are behaving like a bully especially Israel? How can a country/ies which already have a/(>50) nuclear weapons can tell another country that you can't have it and think of being taken seriously? If they are really serious of this problem they should first get rid of their own nuclear weapons than and only than they should tell others "you can't have it". I think you might be knowing the incident of Swami Vivekanand....
Has anyone taken a look at the President’s Press Conferences lately? The last one was creepy to the point of being downright scary.
The room is eerily quiet and orderly compared to previous Presidential news conferences. The questions appear to be pre-submitted. Certainly someone outside of view is pre-selecting which reporters the President calls upon. The President seems to have concise, prepared answers – even though he is not known for doing very well without a teleprompter. There are no follow up questions.
Isn’t this political control of the media? Who does the selection and by what criteria? What if a reporter goes off script?
I really objected to the tenor of the latest so-called news conference and feel this issue should be addressed. What suddenly happened to freedom of the press?
It is virtually impossible to elect a third party presidential candidate in the U.S., not so much because of politics, but because of a MATHEMATICAL flaw in our binary voting system which doesn't work when there are more than 2 candidates for an office. The best correction is optional "RANGE VOTING", which is basically a system where you rate each of the candidates for an office as opposed to giving your vote entirely and exclusively to one candidate. I invite you to educate yourself about this on the web and the following links:
Here's a link where you can read about range voting:

Would love to hear your take on the Kony 2012 campaign.
Watched your show just now. Analysis sharp as always. Pronunciation still sub-par. Remember: Jingle bells, jingle bells, all the way to Bei JING
Iran rational? Are you insane? Your are an ignorant fool for saying that. Hope you report from there when the bombs start to drop. I will never watch cnn and your show again...How can you say that Iran is rational when they are threatening Israels existance? You pig.
How can we mature from knee-jerk, intuitive, reactions (Afghanistan/Iraq wars) to thoughtful, researched ACTIONS (Syria/Iran) without the constant barrage of criticism from the far right that we are "un-American" and dangerous?
Fareed,
Your point about Iran would be all the more powerful if you can demonstrate that there are also irrational actors, and perhaps cite one of them.
The concern is that you come from a school of thought were there is no such thing, is there? Isn't this at the heart of the debate over the existence of evil between the left and the right?
With all this talk of possible foreign help for the Syrian people's troubles, might not this be an opportunity for Israel? What if Israel offered to help the freedom fighters? Perhaps Israel could take the lead in airlifting supplies in, or offering help at the border, or even military support for rebel objectives. Wouldn't this lead to a major shift in Arab street goodwill if this could be pulled off? Or is this concept just impossible?
IS IT TRUE THAT YOU SUPPORTED THE INVASION OF IRAQ AND HAVE NOW CHANGED YOUR MIND?
IF SO YOUR CREDIBILITY IS TARNISHED. WHY SHOULD WE TAKE YOUR VIEWS ON IRAN SERIOUSLY ?
MJ VALENCIA
so you've never been wrong? fact is everyone has been wrong. it doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't listen to their opinion. but if you don't care what fareed thinks then simply say that, don't say just because he was wrong once or even a few times that tarnishes everything else he says.
I've been trying to find the answer to this question for a while: Does the Isreali government really see a nuclear Iran as a threat to their security or have they tcreated the myth of the Iran threat to win domestic and international support for their policies? As far as I'm concerned, an Iran with nuclear capability would never be stupid enough to bomb any country that already has nuclear capability. Also, an Isreali attack on Iran would only bolster the Iranian regime and give them more legitimacy.
Fareed, just to add to the many questions about Iran, why isn't diplomacy and actually talking to the Iranian Leadership directly an option? Has that been attempted directly versus using the UN? Why can Russia and China continue to deal with Iran and not be excommunicated while everyone else thinks its so preposterous to have any ties or diplomatic relations with Iran?
Do you know of any instance where the sanctions have worked in terms of getting the intended results. Can the sanctions stop the Iran from acquiring the nuclear weapons.
If this revolution happens in Syria. Will it be controlled by Islamic extremists?
Urgent: Iranian Nuclear Threat!!!
Hi Fareed, I would like to discuss Iran, Israel, and the nuclear conundrum
I am working on an article and here is a brief summary of it, and I would like to hear your thoughts on it.
Expedient Iran: The supreme leader’s fatwa against nuclear weapons and the hangover of an Israeli first strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities
My concern is another irrational decision to attack Iran. Iran is not Iraq, and in the event as such, there will be adverse consequences for the entire Middle East and the world at large. This is to say that an attack on its nuclear sites will not deter it from developing more in the future, in fact they will come back more stronger, more determined, and more cautious. They will fortify them in more secure underground bunkers to prevent future attacks. They will also now consider revenge based on an expediency argument of being attacked first. In addition, they will explicitly prompt up the support of terrorist networks in the Gaza Strip, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and as well increase and extend its coordination and support for Hezbollah. This is what I am predicting. Therefore, Iran should be treated as an equal partner on this matter. The chain effects that could also bring the world economy to its knees should Iran succeed in blocking the Strait of Hormuz, should not be detested.
The Persians claim a history to boast about. They have now settled in a nation-state called Iran, actually, The Islamic Republic of Iran. The nation of Iran has recently been stigmatized by many nations of the world, mainly, Western nations and regional rivals. This is because of a nuclear program that they are engaged in. They claim that it is for peaceful purposes. However, on the other hand, the West claims that they are gearing towards a nuclear weapon. This claim is loudest echoed by Israel. The prime suspect of Iran’s intentions, should they be evil as claimed by the Jewish state, which houses a people with an equally, if not superior to Iran’s, it is a history laden with tragedy, suffering and hope.
The nation of Israel and Iran both seem to be at a logger head at present, with both engaging in furious rhetoric and a seemingly gesture of war preparedness. This is what the relationship between these two nations entails. This raises an interesting question, has the Persians and Jews always been at odds, and the answer is seemingly no. It is important not to forget the good deed that King Darius did (a Persian king) to the Israelis, and Israelis support to the Persians during their war with Iraq.

why the global leaders never consider the establishment of a global body that take care the global migration?
Mr. Zakaria, with all due respect, I would like you to know that you are very wrong about the policies of the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran. They are as you said very rational leaders, but their logic is only for self preservation. They are nothing but a gang of murderers, theievs and lierrs. They are seeking a nuclear arm, and their only purpose of otaining nuclear arm is to take the people of Iran hostage. One can not forget what these gangs of murderers did to the people of Iran after the rigged election of 2008 who were simply asking what happened to their votes. One can not forget that almost every single past leaders of the regime is either assasinated, locked up, impresonned, or isolated. The mob that is running the Islamic Republic of Iran has absolutley no nationalistic ideology, and has no value for life of the Iranian People. All they are interested in is monopolizing the power to loot more and more of Iran's riches, and transfer it to the foreign banks. Have you not heard of the missing the very large sums of money in the government? The truck full of gold blocks and $$$ confiscated in Turkey worth over $20 Billion as Turkish leaders have aknowledged? The leaders of Islamic Republic of Iran have every intention to obtain nuclear arms, not to attack and destroy other countries, but only to follow the North Korean model of keeping the gates closed, and taking the people of Iran hostage, and doing what ever they want to them, and be assured that no one from outside is going to touch them. For this purpose thay have and are paying large some of stolen Iraninan money to their proxies Paestinians and Hezbollah, and other gangs in South American countries, and giving a lot of bribes to Russia and China to keep them in power. Therfore THE IRANIAN PEOPLE WILL BE THE ONYL VICTOMS OF A NUCLEAR ISLAMIC REPUBLIC REGIME.
Fareed,
Why do your discussions regarding the threat of nuclear weapons or war in a particular region tend to leave the viewer at the point of anticipating the possibility of events surrounding that first launched attack rather than the what is left in any particular region of the world after that attack is launched?
Knowing that there is much public misconception concerning the physical effects of nuclear war–some of it motivated by politics–should motivate you to leave the viewers dealing with some of the more compelling facts of life after a nuclear attack and the emotions of why these politicians drunk on their own power struggles and egos rather than the quality of life of their own people need to be stopped!
Read your gas prices piece on CNN Saturday. What about the role of commodity market specultors? They play games with the price of oil and make a killing on their market bets, while the rest of us get screwed at the pump.
What they couldn't achieve in 34 years, they can do it in 24 hours. Just exercise self restraint of about half percent
in the matter of your 20% consumption of the world's oil and see the price dwindling down. What you say Fareed?
Your response as to why the oil price per barrel has shot up seemed to conclude that Iran and Iraq were to blame. Why not try to tell your public how the price per barrel of oil is deteremined in the marketplace?????? Do the research and you might find that Iran and Iraq have little or nothing to do with the price of oil. Check it out!!
I don't have a question, but I do have a comment: I recently mentioned on LinkedIn that Fareed Zakaria is one of the finest journalists in the world today, and I always learn and think about something new every time I watch GPS. His "all-star panel," however, seems to have descended into "Crossfire mode" where everyone tries to talk over everyone else, and usually 3 people end up talking at he same time. To viewers at home, it becomes unintelligible and thoroughly disappointing. I suggest that perhaps the host or the producer coach the participants in advance, stop them dead on their tracks if they all talk at the same time in spite of the coaching, and not invite them again if they persist. They're true experts, they're fascinating to listen to, but they're also reducing the quality of one of the best news and information shows ever produced, and they should not be allowed to do so.
Fareed Zakaria has developed a show that is one of the best on television. You have brought an intellectual discussion on many important topics that is substantive and engaging for the viewing audience. Having just witnessed the panel discussion featuring the Israeli/Iran and Israeli/Palestinian confrontation and conflict respectfully on this Sunday's show (3/11/12), I must say that losing control of the discussion to a non-cogent shouting match is very unlike the GPS discussions to which I am accustomed. If this type of behavior continues, I am not inclined to watch. Please bring to the conversation men and women who are under control and can respect the opinions of other panel members, allow each other to complete their thoughts, and the audience to hear their respective positions.
Very disapointed in the general tenor of much of the debate that is happening on many programs and would hate to see it become part and parcel to yours. Thanks for listening.
could bring some important perspectives to the topics.
Mr. Fareed Zakaria, we watch GPS before church each Sunday because your presentation of information is usually unparallel and your choice of guests is uplifting. Your show is an excellent source on current events and world affairs– GPS is one of the best shows on CNN. We admire the following about your show:
1. Concise Reporting
2. Statistics & Facts
3. Worldwide View (substantiated by precise information) 4. Unbiased Integrity in reporting news items based on factual information- verified and not lending support to political rhetoric.
5. Historical Research and honesty in Reporting
Congratulations, you are the "Best"- "Gold Metal" Reporter today. We applaud your Integrity & Unbiased excellence in reporting world affairs!
Thank You!

Assuming obama wins re-election, what do you think obama need's to do to get netanyahu to play ball with the U.S. and the palestinian's? I'm wondering what you think of the idea that if netanyahu refuses to take serious steps to achieve peace, do you think that threatening to allow the palestinians to go to the U.N. unilaterally and achieve their state is a good idea.
Fareed, I respect the fact that you always seem to bring knowledgeable guests on your show which leads to good and interesting debates. But, on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, one man who's recognized globally as the expert on the topic by the likes of Norm Chomsky and others has never been invited on your show. This individual goes by the name of Norman Finklestein and I challenge you give him the opportunity to come on and debate the on the issue. You will not be disappointed.
I was disappointed to see you raise the issue of gas prices in Norway in an apparent attempt to mollify the resentment against this administration for high gas prices. There are parts of this country where people must drive hundreds of mies each week. I am sure that is much less common in Norway or all of Europe for that matter. There is double digit unemployment in some European countries. Does that mean we are lucky to have the high unemployment we have now?
I know you will probably say you were trying to give some perspective on gas prices but without true perspective on our driving conditions in the West and Midwest, you do not do the topic justice.
I have a rather simplistic question and would prefer a simplistic answer. Question: Why are we in Afghanistan? Does anyone even remember? If the simplistic answer is ridding the country of terrorists, it hasn't worked in the 10 years we have occupied the country, and probably never will.
How does the Greek retirement system work and are those already drawing a pension affected by the mandated austerity rules to secure their latest bailouts.

Regarding Syria, what do you believe would be the ideal US Policy, UN Policy, and other Arab States Policies realistically? More importantly, what do you believe will actually occur in the next couple of months with Syria?
Fareed,
I simply wanted to express my appreciation for your thoughtful articles posted on the CNN website, they are always thoughtful, entertaining, and informational.
Best wishes for your future in journalism. (Although, it seems like you are doing just fine already!)

I watched your program on overhauling healthcare and came away with thinking that your opinion essentially was that the USA needs something more than a free market approach to healthcare, that "Obamacare" didn't go far enough and that panels of some sort would be needed to restrain rising costs. My brother watched the same program and came away thinking that you were no fan of "Obamacare" - period. Do you think Obamacare should be thrown out?
President Hollande failed to get the growth debate going. But down south in South Africa a formula enabling simulated growth analysis has been initiated. The problem is that it cannot be tested there and most likely need to interface with John Sterman at the Sloans Business School of MIT. Can you facilitate that because it shows real promise and the feeling is that American implementation will save Africa in that way, as well. CNN is not just about reporting and also about influencing. Please contact me for further info.
