The pressure is building on Iran, but there are no serious discussions of negotiated outcomes. Israel has been ever more explicit in saying it may launch an attack by summer. Obama has amped up his threats of military strikes too, limiting his room to maneuver. And Republican presidential candidates will instantly denounce any negotiated solution - no matter how comprehensive the inspections it requires - as a sellout....
Before we set out on a path to another Middle East war, let's remember some facts. First, Iran does not have nuclear weapons. And the evidence is ambiguous as to whether it has decided to make them....
What if Iran does manage to develop a couple of crude nukes in several years? Obama says a nuclear Iran would set off an arms race in the Middle East. But a nuclear North Korea has not led the two countries directly threatened by its weapons - South Korea and Japan - to go nuclear. Saudi Arabia and Egypt did not go nuclear in response to Israel's developing a large and robust arsenal of nuclear weapons....
Obama has explained that a nuclear Iran would be a problem like India and Pakistan with their nuclear weapons. But India and Pakistan went to war three times in 30 years before they had nuclear weapons. Since they went nuclear, they have been restrained and have not fought a war in 40 years. That case shows the stabilizing, not destabilizing, effects of deterrence. If Israel genuinely believes that deterrence doesn't work in the Middle East, why does it have a large nuclear arsenal if not to deter its enemies?
Iran's weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists, says the President. But would a country that has labored for decades to pursue a nuclear program and suffered huge sanctions and costs to do so then turn around and give the fruits of its efforts to a gang of militants?
This kind of reasoning is part of the view that the Iranians are mad, messianic people bent on committing mass suicide. When General Martin Dempsey explained on my CNN program last month that he viewed Iran as a "rational actor," he drew howls of protest.
Dempsey was making a good point. A rational actor is not necessarily a reasonable actor or one who has the same goals or values that you or I do. A rational actor is someone who is concerned about his survival....
In an essay in the Washington Monthly, former senior U.S. intelligence official Paul Pillar writes, "More than three decades of history demonstrate that the Islamic Republic's rulers, like most rulers elsewhere, are overwhelmingly concerned with preserving their regime and their power - in this life, not some future one."
In fact, the entire punitive strategy against Iran is premised on the notion that Iran is calculating the costs of these pressures and will change its policies as a result. The question right now is not whether Iran can be rational but whether the U.S. and Israel can carefully evaluate the consequences of a preventive war - inside Iran and beyond - and weigh them against its limited and temporary benefits.

Fareed, According to Janes Weekly, Israel has >300 active nuclear weapons with no international oversight such as IAEA. This has to make neighbors in the region more than a little uncomfortable. Wouldn't it help encourage middle east peace if they agreed, like the Ukraine for example, to give them up in exchange for long term peace?
appears that long term peace has never been considered by israel's neighbors who wont even recognize their right to exist! maybe we should start there and move to peace after that. eventually, maybe all nuclear weapons can be destroyed. isn't that the point of "non proliferation" rather than discussing spreading nuclear weapons around to countries not already possessing them as many of the posters on the various CNN articles suggest, because ...........ooooooo Israel already has them.
True, many see it unfair, that Israel has nuclear weapons while Netanyahu opposes someone else – in this case Iran – to acquire some. He defends his view by claiming that Iran poses a security threat to his country and plans to attack the Islamic Republic in order to disenable its enrichment process. Netanyahu has capitalised on this hypothesis of threat and driven the international community to the verge of fear and frenzy.

Looming World War III? Consider this: If Israel and the United States team up to jointly strike Iran, it would not be a military strike in a vacuum. We should consider who Iran's allies are. To what extent would China and Russia back up their proxy-ally Iran? Or, how far would China and Russia go to prevent a military strike besides using the UN security counsel to block a military strike? Would the United States even use the UN to achieve its goal of preventing Iran from having nuclear weapons? - The other actors that have interests in Iran include Syria and Hizbollah, not to mention a number of unknown actors who support Iran's anti-Western rhetoric. If the United States and Israel strike Iran, even if the strike only targets nuclear facilities, there is the more than likely probability that Iran will retaliate. And what will that be?
The terrorists could steal the nukes from India and give it to Iran anyways. Didn't someone just gun down some Israeli diplomats in India? Iran got blamed for it. Remember? This Iran hoopla is a big smokescreen to divert attention from somethin' else brewin ova dere. All tied in to Afghanistan pullout.

Look, I agree Fareed, but we are in a critical moment. I dont want Israel to start a new war with Iran, but look at Syria. The opposition is in tactical retreat and probably will be until there is external intervention. That intervention will lead to the Russians firing cruisers. Israel is not making this any easier with their saber rattling, and frankly it is almost as if they are taunting America as well as Iran, but that is what happens on the edge of all out war. Status quo is not acceptable for more and more.

I say, yes, yes…, Mr. Fareed. There are millions out there that prays every day to see the US and Israel on its knees liking its own dust and surely there are those who won’t hesitate to blow themselves up to achieve the goal. The complexities of human being are worst than Goya’s painting… let's not put that out the equation.
Another unnecessary war in the Middle East is what scares me to no end. The Iranians would be wise however, to make the same kind of deal with the U.N. that South Africa did some years ago. That is, to have nuclear energy for electric power but not to build nuclear weapons and let the U.N. inspectors check in every now and then to verify Iran's compliance.
If the US goes to war with Iran the winner will be China.
The current wars the US has been involved in during the past decade are going to cost the US between 5-7 trillion dollars. A war with Iran would cost that much again – sending the US bankrupt. The war would also focus the US on the Middle East for another decade and by then it will be totally forgotten about in the Asia Pacific. Fareed; No one can predict what Iran will do with a nuke. It is intelligent to assume the worst case situation, That would be a nuke used against the US or Israel. You can not say for sure that it could not happen, therefore, it is rational to contain the spread of nukes and too many countries already have them. The best situation would be a nuclear free world.
All 16 US intelliigence agencies agree that Iran is not seeking to obtain nuclear weapons. Iran even held an international conference some time ago making it clear it does not want any country in the Middle East to have nuclear weapons.

Comparison with India and Pakistan is incorrect. Yes, we have not fought a war for many years now. The last time we fought a war was in 1998. Pakistan lost miserably and have not even admitted to attacking India. They claim that it was armed militants and terrorists who attacked. Anyway, since that failed attempt Pakistan has realized that it cannot defeat India in a conventional war and hence has resorted to its proxies like Lashkar-e-Toiba which carries out terrorist attacks in India, most recently the 2008 attack in Mumbai. And the only reason why India did not respond was because Pakistan has nuclear weapons. India knows where terrorist training centers are located in Pakistan, but they cannot attack since they know that Pakistan will not hesitate to use its nuclear weapons. Imagine the Iran also gets nuclear weapons. A similar situation will arise in the middle east. Iran will conduct terrorist attacks within Israel through its proxies-Hamas and Hezbollah knowing fully well that Israel will not retaliate. Yes, Israel has nuclear weapons; but has it ever threatened to wipe off a nation from the face of the earth?
Thanks Moses. I have been itching to correct Fareed on the facts about Indo Pak war. Its sad that because of Pak's denial not many around the world know or recognize that there was a war fought between India and Pak in 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kargil_War). Many soldiers got killed on either side of the border and there was only side which accepted that they were real soldiers.

How Iran could save face:
The first step of the U.S. plan would apparently be for Iran to stop enriching uranium to 20 percent and to ship out of the country the 20 percent uranium it has enriched. Iran says this level of enrichment is needed to fuel a research reactor in Tehran that makes medical isotopes. The problem is that this is a move up from the 5 percent enrichment needed for power reactors, and closer to the more than 90 percent refinement needed for nuclear weapons.
In return for Iran's giving up 20 percent enrichment, there would be a freeze on further sanctions against the Islamic Republic, and Iran would get fuel for its research reactor. This is a modified form of a fuel-swap plan already proposed but rejected by Iran, and which is designed to build confidence by reducing Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, and so its ability to move ahead to make a bomb. Iran would be expected to increase confidence in its peaceful intentions also by shipping out of the country enough of the low-enriched uranium it has refined to about 3.5 percent in order not to have enough left to refine further into a bomb.
The fuel-swap proposal allows for Iran to keep on enriching uranium, however. It is the magic compromise in which Iran becomes less of a proliferation threat while at the same time getting, at least on a de facto level, the one thing it has sought from the beginning—to keep on enriching uranium. Further on, both the U.S. and Russian plans envisage some period, even a relatively short one, in which Iran would suspend enrichment. U.S. officials have made clear that Security Council resolutions do not call for Iran to give up enrichment definitively, only to do this for a while as a confidence-building measure.
America is too bankrupt to start another war. America's debt is making it look like a third world country. America's goal is to try and destroy Iran's economy by scaring off investors however I doubt it will succeed. China, India and Iran have been trading with each other for a couple of thousand years and are not likely to be put off doing this by a short term superpower.
If Iran is permitted to develop nuclear strike ability it would create an extraordinary danger to America. Suppose Israel had not destroyed Iraq’s nuclear reactor in 1981, and a nuclear-armed Saddam had invaded Kuwait and threatened Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. Would the United States have acted against him? It is doubtful. The majority of the world’s oil supply might very well have fallen under Saddam’s control, presenting an “existential threat” to America. Today the U. S. is discussing an intervention into Syria. If Israel had not destroyed Assad’s reactor, and he had nuclear weapons and nothing to lose by using them, would the U. S. consider intervening to aid the Syrian people? It is, again, doubtful. Despite the grave risks and costs involved in destroying Iran’s nuclear weapons program, the United States would be astoundingly foolish in not doing so.

The reason for writing the novel 'Twins in Arms' is because of an incidence of deja vu that frightened me. I informed officials at the American Embassy in Beirut on two separate occasions in August 1983 of a rumor regarding an imminent attack on U.S. Marines stationed at the Beirut Airport. Three months later, the Beirut Barracks bombing took place, killing 241 American servicemen.
I doubt if the CIA and the FBI would ever listen to me because they are overloaded with intelligent informations and don’t know what to do with them. I made sure the FBI know about the plot that will harm the U.S. for many generations to come. This is not a joke. I shortened my novel to 145 pages from 400 pages in order the common people could afford it. I humbly asking you to read it and be the judge if I’m fake or for real.

I agree. The only thing we have to be worried about is Iran giving a nuke to terrorists. But we don't have to worry about a suitcase bomb because that would do minimal if any damage and wouldn't even cause death. Bomb by ship, or maybe air, is the only way we are threatened. Air isn't likely so that leaves a boat. Looks like we need to bump up security and deal with it. Increasing security is a lot cheaper than invading and taking over a country. It will save a lot more lives too. We live with this nuclear threat everyday regardless is Iran has nukes.

What is relevant is that they deny the Nazi Holocaust of the Jewish people ever took place and they continously refer to israel as a cancer which will be removed, wiped off the map and seeking nuclear means to do just that. Israel on the other hand having survived the holocaust and countless wars of agression and of never ending threats of anhilation by muslims is mad, is messianic and is highly irrational and therefore won't give bombing Iran a second thought to fullfi the promise of NEVER AGAIN!

In the seventies, Professor Kistenmaker, the inventor of the uranium enrichment process, was on Dutch TV when the Dutch and German Governments were building a uranium enrichment facility in Almelo, Holland. It was the same time that first America, a few weeks later Russia, declared that they had developed the neutron bomb and the Professor was asked his opinion. Surprisingly he said that it was a hoax, as it was physically impossible. Then he added that people are technically so illiterate that they will believe anything they are told, provided it comes from a reliable source.
According to my information this centrifuge enrichment process solely separate Uranium-235 from Uranium -238 and that the weapon grade Plutonium-239 can only be produced in nuclear reactors. The present discussion among the nuclear scientists is to built either Uranium or Thorium reactors. Even tough Thorium reactors have many advantages, most countries specifically selected Uranium reactors, because they could produce weapon grade Plutonium-239, while Thorium reactors, also could create weapon grade Uranium- 237, but that is extremely difficult to handle (for terrorist) due to its very high Gamma radiation.
If this information is correct, why then is Israel and America so concerned with Iran enriching uranium with centrifuges? IF we are concerned with weapon grade plutonium, shouldn't we more focused on countries that already have nuclear reactors? OR was Professor Kistenmaker right when he said that people will believe anything, provided it comes from a reliable source and aren't we again be pulled into a war based on incorrect information?

Also a nuclear Iran could lead other middle east countries into going nuclear. Look at India and Pakistan. When India went nuclear, Pakistan said they will go nuclear even if their people have to eat grass in the process. And so they did go nuclear.
You say Iran is not going to share the fruits of its labor with militants. When Pakistan went nuclear, the Pakistani scientist sold their blueprint to North Korea and Iran. Why do you think Iran wont do the same? Iran could sell its technology to Venezuela and we will have a bigger headache down south.
We have Russia and China squarely on the side of Iran. Once Iran goes nuclear, that makes Russia, China, North Korea and Iran all four nuclear armed countries as enemies of USA. Even if we set aside the threat Iran poses to Israel, from USAs point of view, Iran going nuclear is the worst that can happen to US. For just a couple of planes hitting the world trade centers US went through so much loss and bloodshed including the vast expense of the war on terrorism. If Iran joins the nuclear club, the balance of power in the world will tip away from the west to the east. That in itself is a reason to bomb the Iranian nuclear facilities to smithereens.

a) Don’t get carried away by reading just one article
b) Read his sequence of articles to get a clear picture where he is leading you.
c) On Iran just 2 days ago he said that we are pressurizing Iran just too much, now he says they are a rational actor and points to other countries in the area which possessing Nukes, disregarding the fact that none of them have threatened Iran, next will be his call for nuke free zone in the ME asking Israel to come clean (knowing too well it’s a non-starter and a huge impediment to peace in the region), next he calls for solving the Israel-Palestine problem in line with Hamas demands (ultimately aimed at destroying the Jewish nation).
CNN has become a mouthpiece for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by employing Fareed Zakaria in its payroll. Either Fareed Zakaria is a twin brother of Ahmadinajad or they shared a bed in their past lives. One who thinks Iran is a rational actor needs to have their head examined. US has been dealing with Iran from the late 70s like a thorn in the butt. This is the time to pluck it off before the infection gets worse.
Just read all the headlines about the middle east that Fareed has written. It will make one think that his salary basically comes from the Iranian regime.
In his article "South Korea's derring-do", he starts off by asking "What do you get when you put 40 heads of state 30 miles away from a rogue nuclear nation?". He refers to North Korea as a "rogue nuclear nation". But when it comes to Iran and its nuclear ambition, he calls Iran a "rational actor". If only Kim Jong Il was an Islamist, he would have called North Korea a rational actor too.

Two things come to my mind in with this situation . 1/ Where have we heard the quote "They are building weapons of mass destruction" . (C.Powells , UN address on Iraq ). I think we need clearer evidence of nuclear weaponizing intent then the "cuz I said so " statements from the same storytellers.
2/ I think nothing would generate more sympathy in the area than a Israeli/ USA preemptive on Iran. I would be worried about who else would get involved , in an already volatile area of the world . OIl prices ? If war happens expect prices to skyrocket at the pump from what we pay now. I think we need more action diplomatically and indirect action behind the scenes. Begin with treating Iran as a legitimate government and increase respectful dialogue on all sides...including Israel.
