The three things your mother told you not to talk about at the dinner table: Sex, politics and religion. I have a great panel to talk about the intersection of all three in the 2012 presidential race.
Then, is space the final frontier of foreign policy? That's what astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson says. And he's warns us that the United States is losing the current battle.
Finally, is America "coming apart"? I'll talk to author Charles Murray who has a controversial book out about the current class struggle. It's subtitled "the state of white America, 1960-2010."
Be sure to tune in to CNN this Sunday at 10am or 1pm EST.

As much as I hate to admit it, this country is starting to fall apart. The main reason being is that the people keep voting the wrong politicians into office who are in turn employed by the all-powerful M.I.C in Washington. In the meantime, the middle class is slowly being programmed out of existance by special interest groups. The people need to read their history books is all I can say!!!
No you are not sorry and no it is not falling apart.
You are just spewing poison and try to sow dissent as per usual, as per your subscription to Jihadist Monthly.

Good grief Lionel, this country is slowly falling apart as much as you wish to deny it. The handwriting is on the wall. The same thing happened to the Romans 1600 years ago but many of of them also refused to acknowledge that! You need to learn more about the history of Rome and it's aftermath!!!
Good grief george err abdul, the spread of misinformation is disgusting.

If it is coming apart, it's because we are getting away from the values that helped build this country. No doubt middle-aged white males are targets of mass media hatred. No doubt the media is fanning the flames of resentment and hatred (perfect example was the liberal media labeling George Zimmerman a "white hispanic" down in Sanford WHAT?!) To top it off, we have a Socialist-dominated news network like CNN to push the message that success is OK as long as you share a majority of your assets with the government to be handed out to those who do nothing to deserve it. Fareed even believes that no one should be able to leave more than $150,000 to their heirs. Hell Fareed, why don't we just take it all? Proof that foreigners or children of foreigners bring their Socialist crap over here to destroy the only successful civilized country in world history (235 years and counting).
you have no cue what the word socialism means.
Southeast Chuck, Maybe the children of foreigners that you referred to are actually practising Christianity as was taught by Christ whilst all you do is profess to be a Christian but not live the values of "love God" and "love they neighbour as thyself". It ‘s true that initially, the media was reporting that George Zimmerman was white and that's because they didn't investigate his race and just seeing a white face referred to him as white, initially because he appeared so. That is a genuine mistake that can happen and did happen and was later corrected. Parents or relatives should feel free to leave any amount that they have made through honest and hardworking means to their off-springs or indeed anyone they wish to bequeath their wealth to. Should not be a problem. After all it is their wealth and they can do with it whatever they wish to. However, the Bible states that to whom much is given, much is expected. It’s not my quote. It’s the quote from the Bible which the Founding Fathers believed in and practised.
My life has been threatened too many times.

How deep rooted is democracy in USA ? What may be the percentage of population who will vote against Obama (or for republican candidate ) mainly due to racial motives ? What may be the other most important motives ( health, jobs, foreign intervension,..etc) ? Why are the " presidential electors" still a democratic election apparatus ? Since US presidents are effecting the well being of the world so much, would it not be a " democratic " way to permit votes by non US citizens to have of at least % 10 effect on the outcome ?
hehehe...
the lethal association between military and religion on the one hand and between "states" and religion on the other hand have offered humanity, since day 1, nothing but destruction and misery. When will we end this?
Not anytime soon mohamed, as long as the M.I.C. continues to run things in Washington D.C. and it will. Like George Patton already said above, the middle class is slowly being pushed into oblivion!
Our research of consumption and income patterns suggests that both the poor and middle classes, lifted by a rising economic tide, have actually made substantial gains in the past 30 years. And while the Great Recession has certainly taken a harsh toll in recent years, these long-term gains hold vital lessons for politicians to uphold pro-growth policies at a time when they’re hearing populist cries to remake the economic order.
Here goes another mouthpiece for the right-wing thugs in Washington above. Yes, the economy is slowly improving but the vast mojority of the poor will remain poor while others get ever poorer. No matter how you slice it, the middle class is shrinking while the bigwigs on Wall Street and in Washington D.C. get ever richer!
You are, obviously, a comedian.
You are very funny!
The thing Charles Murray forgets, along with everyone else, is the cuts in public education made by President Nixon in 1969-70 resulted in such a significant drop in public school funding that most schools ultimately had to eliminate vocational training. Tha result of this was a drop in skilled workers, which is hidden by housing market bubbles, because unskilled workers are finding work in "construction".
Mr. Murray hit on an important topic but I believe he missed the mark in his analysis of the problem. Decline in marriage rate isn't just a phenomenon of the working class but of the upper and upper middle class as well. As a physician with a completely female practice (gynecologist), I observe and discuss this observation almost daily. I find that even well educated women are opting to stay single because, as Mr. Murray put it, "why would I marry those losers?" Grossly generalizing, today's men are a sorry lot to pick from. They tend to be narcissistic and egotistical lacking insight into themselves and those close to them. I believe that as women have become more educated and self reliant, they now have jobs that can support their family. This self reliance has allowed them to opt out of an often abusive and subservient marriage and forge it alone. This single mom setting is not optimal, but given the other option, it seems a much healthier alternative for mom and children alike!
Thank you. I read this after my post. You put it much more articulately, calmly, and with better information. Again, thank you.
Well said, Julie. No woman should ever be in an abusive relationship either with a husband or a boyfriend. Abusive men should never marry unless they change. There is no excuse for domestic abuse!
Great job summing it up Julie. When Charles Murray stated his conclusion I wanted to say... "Wait a minute. Rewind the tape.... Did he just say what I think he did? Why would a women jepardize her family for some loser just to be "married". And where are the male counter parts in society that should be telling the young males to buck up and carry more responsibility???
I'm often amazed at how it seems to ruffle so many feathers whenever Christianity is brought into the public
discussion. Were our forefathers really the anti-Christians we are today being led to believe? This is our first
president's prayer for our nation.
The following was also printed in the Bibles that were given to the American troops in World War II.
George Washington's Prayer For The Nation:
Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in thy holy protection; that Thou
wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government and entertain
a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large.
And finally, that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy and to demean
ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author
of our blessed religion and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation.
Grant our supplications, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Kyra, none of our founding fathers were anti-Christian as the right-wing fanatics want us to believe today. However, some of them were Dietists. Dietists did and do believe in God in that God sat the universe in motion and everything evolved from then and there. Atheists, on the other hand, don't believe in God at all.
Re: Charles Murray –
I wish that someone - anyone – pointed out the obvious in Murray's thesis that the collapse of the middle class is due to their moral failings, and that the 1% should be imparting to them the virtues of industriousness, marriage. As Bertold Brecht wrote "First comes a full stomach, then comes ethics." Zakaria like every other so called journalist I have seen interview Murray on his book took merely cited that Murray was controversial, then let him go on with his talking points.
The past 40 years have seen a steady erosion of the middle class lifestyle. Two income families, wage stagnation, benefit cuts, overleveraging, ruin. Now is this because of the moral failings of the 99% as Murray would have it, a lack of industriousness on the part of everyone else? Do the poor not deserve medical treatment because they are lacking in character? Do young minorities deserve to be shot in cold blood if they stray too near some gated community because by definition they are immoral?
The real moral problem here is with plutocrats selling us out then blaming us for not being as good and hard working as they are. The War on Poverty has become a War on the Poor.
Charles (Thurston Howell III) Murray has a point. If the damned working class had just sent their kids to proper "day schools", then Chote, and finally to a proper ivy-league college they would extoll the "right" values too. Silly working class people!
LOL..... I couldn't have said it better myself...... Great summary rkwi27!!!!
BASHAR AL; ASAD KILL MORE THAN 14,000 PEOPLE ALL THANKS TO RUSSIA AND IRAN THOSE EVIL COUNTRIES SPONSERED TERRORISTS AND WE MUST ATTACK ALL IRANIANS AND RUSSIAN INTERESTS ANY WHERE
Interesting program today on incarceration, but the graphic displayed at the beginning was wrong. Californa spends $57Billion on education, not $5.7 ..... A decimal makes the nuMber more shocking when compared to prison costs, but not accurate. Come on CNN get it right.
James, can you send a link...ty
OK OK why isnt ther an atheist or humanist on the panel?
Now that's a good question, Danny. Why aren't there any? What gets me, on the other hand, are these right-wing Evangicals going around preaching hate and war in the name of Christianity. Can you imagine Jesus condoning the use of those godless drones hurling 500lb. bombs on people in both Afghanistan and Pakistan? I cannot!
Murray would do best to stop describing this as women having babies out of wedlock, but as men not taking part in their children's lives. I know of no low income woman that would turn away from a responsible husband and father for her children. The declining male accountability is more the issue than women. Men are equally as capable of using birth control. Why is it women are considered the grown up and holder of all responsibility? Do Americans want this to be the truth. Murray has added to this war on women who are becoming more efficient money earners and independent, not necessarily by choice, but by accepting the realities of the men they encounter.
A most eloquent description of the reasons for women finally breaking through the glass ceiling.
Absolutely spot on Jacqui. Women became emancipated and independent many years ago for the same reasons. So they could take care of themsleves and their children and not rely on irresponsible men who do not take their responsibilities in life seriously and by the way, we must also recognise the fact that not all men are irresponsible just as there are women who are irresponsible.
You hit the nail on the head. Superb statement Jacqui...I was wondering what Charles Murray had for breakfast... he was so off the mark!!!!!! Do you think he said that just to rile us up?????
hehehe...hehehe....hehehe...
Umm!
I love GPS but was sorely disappointed with the April 1st show. The interviews with Tyson and Murray were the weakest Fareed has presented. The simplest of challenges for Murray such as "how many marriages do the middle class average" "can the working class afford to get married" "how many jobs between husband and wife does it take to support a working class family" "do wages for the working class provide enough to support a family". The sanctimonious BS by Murray was left unchallenged. Simple question for Tyson "what do you recommend we cut in order to double the NASA budget". Hell it's just a half penny to a whole penny. Also in the round table discussion the unchallenged assertions that the Republican party reflects the views of the religious. They may reflect the views of the people who think all of morality is tied up in the reproductive tract but which party represents the people who think feeding and clothing the poor, caring for the sick, visiting the imprisoned et al are christian if not universal religious priorities. Fareed get with it.
I watch your show every Sunday and feel that it is the best that CNN has to offer. Usually objective and intelligent information, even though it is almost completely dominated by the male thinking model. At least it includes women and attempts to represent their viewpoints in an honest way.
However, today giving time to Charles Murray and his new book was outrageous and has angered me. I am not a single mother however I feel it is necessary to speak for them. Most woman are caring toward their children and understand that they need to support their children. It is sad that many men are not willing to take on this responsibility for a variety of reasons. however to let Mr. Murray say in a judgmental way that there is no room to discuss this problem in society and that is why he wrote his book, is unbelievably patronizing to women who are doing their best to care for their children. If he was on the side of these women he would be stating that he wants to support the single mothers of America and here is how he proposes he and his followers do this. What are his action steps?
I believe that the American culture will reinvent itself in order to support the growth of it's children. Let's consider a culture that needs to support single parent families, or extended families or community families who raise the children. He is traditional in his approach to the question and doesn't have the courage to hold men responsible for not doing their traditional part. Fareed, why didn't you speak up and hold his feet to the fire.
There is a new world coming and women understand that it is based on female values of nurturing, caring, honesty, good food, water, and education whether these values are found in a two parent family or some other family form. I always believed you understood the "Yin" as well as the "Yang". However, after letting Charles use you and your show to promote his divisive values, I am not so sure.
This is just like people telling women that they don't have the write to use contraceptives freely and to have abortions. Charles Murray's statements are his way of saying what he thinks is clever, supporting it with data from the past, creating more division in our society and making a lot of money while doing it.
In your interview with Charles Murray and his Coming Apart, it might be interesting for you to expand the scope of his analysis. In the UK, you don't dare impose your views on those of others (even though they impose their views). Cathedrals in Holland and Germany (and other countries) are being transfomed into shopping centers. These are small examples which apply to most European countries, and elsewhere. This ultimately influences the U.S. and vice-versa, thereby probably accelerating the process Charles Murray describes.
Sally Quinn makes the point that we are not becoming less secular because more and more people are "coming out" as atheists. They seem to be coming out because of their vocal and very forceful imposition of atheism. It seems to me that given the fervor at which some are pressing their anti-god stance, atheism is actually a religion, a godless religion. It is a stretch to say this militaristic brand of atheism we see to day is secular. I have no problem with atheists except they seem to think that because their religion has no god, the separation of church and state doesn't apply. I support separation of church and state and even though I regret many of the restrictions that have been imposed on us that we did not have previously. But I think in the long run, they protect us. I'm a Christian. I don't want to have the government force any religion on me, including atheism.
Postscript - Notice the ridicule of a young believer in the image that heads this post stream.

Your guest said that the church was forced to be part of the right. The catholic church at any rate, has been forced to be part of the right for a long time it was part of the right in general Francos time Franco was defendign the purity of Spain which is to say her through and through catholicness and in the times when tyrants ruled in south america, people such as Pinochet. They would rather remember the part of North america in supportin the coup of Pinochet than how the Vatican always supported the right how ever bloody, as the right also support the church. They always make films of a few token preists who suppport the people, these preists are the pits, they are the false face, that gives cofer to the ufair and tyranical part of the church which hides behind them they pretend to love the people and make it possible for the church to do for these people. All the faschist countries of the west have been catholic and yet the church managed to keep its hands clean. If you live in a cahtolic country you get to find out how the catholics think you should hold their veiws and are willing to harrass you forever if you dont and that makes you se that totalitarianism comes from them. They always say they will be there for you for ever, this lead me to drop any doubts i ever had that the churchc were the responsable for totalitarian faschist states. There were more nazis in catholic Bavaria than in other parts of germany. The last century was the great cresciendo of inquisitional violence, the holocaust and the violence against communists anarquists and even socialists in catholic countries. An in had learnt to get their ordinary populations to be the hang men through teaching them a great love of christ and then teahing tham that to allow infidels was to comite treason to christ or to allow a lot of people to go to hell. Of cousres they oculd h ave started anti abortion ampagns on the right they dont just try to gteach you to be against abortion they at the same time teach that educaction is bad and such they sort of approve of schools and do down science and literature. when all their ideas are clever ways of teaching tea party type ideas how an we believe that they would teach caqtholisim without a poliitical bias. they are not trying to make anti abortion groups on the left.
Sent the above by a mistake before i had finished correcting it, no bad thing as i was in a hurry.
Very great post. I simply stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really loved browsing your blog posts. After all I will be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again soon!
I think that is one of the most vital info for me. And i'm satisfied studying your article. But should statement on some basic things, The site taste is wonderful, the articles is really nice : D. Just right job, cheers
People complain about the pope calling people materialist or greedy when the church owns so much expensive tinsel itself. I can’t remember what remark from your team made me think of writing this but something they said did.
Glitter is something that the powers that be use to fob off women and people from less fortunate classes and distract them from what is truly expensive and fun, so that they never realize that what is really fun is protagonism not the possession of a diamond. If a large portion of the population thinks that owning diamonds is what means you have arrived, they will not be competing for the things that really matter like having fun developing your own projects with others, your missions and such, teaching others.
Where money probably truly leads the church astray, morally, is not in the glitter, at least its glitter is a lesser ill, it is in the money it manages for its many projects and it should be remembered that they are much more keen on missionary work than on saving people from the poverty so its projects are not as beneficial as they appear. Missionary actions alone, to many people will not seem such a good reason for the church to fill their pockets as reducing poverty is.
The money they have for projects can lead to complicated moral dilemmas, they must have a lot of money invested in the markets and this could lead them to prejudice people for the sake of their funds, it could lead them to hide the banks guilt when they understood what had happened perfectly well, they would want to deceive people about the role of the bank because if banks did not get their money back on the debt they had handed out, then that would prejudice the Vatican’s savings accounts and a few other things everyone considers worthy, like our pension funds that are tightly miced up with the banks.
The Greek governments and many others, the Spanish building contractors or American house owners, did not simply get into debt because they were on the lookout for cheap money and overreached themselves, as the public always is, it happened that the banks were desperate to get people to take out debt because they were make a lot of money on it. They were making so much money selling the benefits of being a debtors on the open market and so getting a quick return on their money that they wanted more debt to sell and started getting a lot of people into debt they could not afford. This new situation in which the person who made the loan was not the person who received the payments on that loan because that rights to interest on the loan has been sold on to another party, was a new situation and one that separated the risks of debt from the person who arranged the loan and so made the financiers stopped worrying about whether their clients were credit worthy or not, which meant that they started lending to people who weren’t credit worthy, so getting these clients into trouble and also they were selling on the debt of un-debtworthy clients, so getting this other group of clients the buyers of bonds into trouble, all of which was very morally wrong.
The banks were trying as hard as they could to persuade people to take out more debt because the banks and financiers were making so much money selling on peoples contracts to pay interest on the debt and to pay back the principle bit by bit, that every sort of debt was encouraged by them, such as student debt and credit card debt. Bonds which are the name given to this promise to pay back debt and to pay out the owner of the debt interest on the debt, a sort of rent on the money lent them, offered a better rate of interest to people who brought shares in it than normal shares did and had become very popular since a few men in wall street had found out a way to market it and as with other products if the product is selling well then those who sell it want more product and in this case the way to get more product was to get more people into debt. As it was the banks who wanted the debt so much and who should have known that they had allowed too many insolvent people to take out debt they should have been willing to shoulder some of the losses but they have not the French and german who lent money to Greece have wanted the Greeks to pay rather than the banks paying for what was so rentable to the banks till it became obvious that they had lent to un-creditworthy people and this debt they were selling was worthless.
They have wanted the poorest clients to shoulder the losses and the blame for taking out debt they could not afford and the church, who necessarily has a lot of financiers working for them must have understood all this, the pope says he was one of the first to understand what was happening, should have said that it was the banks fault not the peoples fault and helped the people to make the banks take on their share of the burden but doing so may have put into danger the churches funds and of course the churches funds go to help other poor people, a difficult moral forked stick for the church who did not explain to poor victims that they were not really the guilty ones in this game.
This same care for their funds may draw them into another morally questionable activity, it may make them make them favor rightist politics, so by enormously negatively affecting the poor of the west and the adoption of welfare states in other countries. Democracies have been the thing that is most likely to reduce poverty in other parts of the world as well as in the west so to do things to reduce the welfare state and democracy is wicked indeed and the money of the church may well lead them to ask for the vote of parties that most favor Wall street and so are most destructive to everything that helps the poor of countries.
Another moral problem for the church or it should be a problem, is that using money puts them into contact with people and allows them to put forward their world view, their culture, and psychologically that is an tremendous, people want to pass their heritage on to their own children and to everyone else’s and those of the church, who feel their culture is what people really ought to have, feel morally justified in teaching their culture not the parents culture to other people’s children. You do get ethnic cleansing as well as racial cleansing; taking over other peoples culture is a strong force for that moves people, not always in very edifying ways. Priests are taught in seminaries, a word that says so much about the psychological importance of pressing your agenda on others.
Money allows them to not only teach others but to menace them with cutting of the funds, at very least it makes it hard for people who need funding to keep out of their reach. In Spain, in Franco’s times the police arrived at your door if you did not go to church, which is proof that they don’t mind coercing people into being Catholics and I have experienced pretty extreme forms of coercion from them so I believe them capable of anything in the menacing others field. rose macaskie madrid.

I like this weblog very much, Its a rattling nice situation to read and find information. "What happens to the hole when the cheese is gone" by Bertolt Brecht.
