This past week, the Supreme Court deliberated over a controversial Arizona immigration law. It comes amidst a climate of hostility. Just look at what candidates said during the Republican primaries:
"Mitt Romney will complete construction of a high-tech fence," the candidate announced on his campaign website. Michele Bachmann promised to "build a double-walled fence." And Herman Cain said: "We're going to have a fence; it's going to be 20 feet high; it's going to have barbed wire on the top."
The fence in question guards a third of America's 2,000 mile-long border with Mexico. Supporters of harsher laws argue that 3 out of every 5 illegal immigrants are from Mexico. But just as American hostility is reaching a crescendo, the problem might be disappearing.
I was struck by a Pew report I saw this week. It says a historic pattern of migration has been reversed. Comparing two recent five-year blocks, the report finds that not only has the number of Mexicans immigrating to the U.S. declined by 50 percent (from 3 million to about 1.4 million), the number of Mexicans going the other way back home has doubled. Seven hundred thousand Mexicans in the U.S. moved back between 1995 and 2000. But that number increased to 1.4 million between 2005 and 2010.
The decline in illegal immigrants is no surprise. Even President Obama has spent more on immigration enforcement than his predecessor. What is surprising however, is the drop in net legal migration.
This has several explanations. The U.S. economy is weaker. On the other hand, Mexico's economy is strengthening. Its GDP per capita is 15,000 dollars - about a third that of America's.
Some of Mexico's competitiveness is due to NAFTA - the North American Free Trade Agreement. Because it avoids U.S. tariffs, its exports work out to be cheaper than China's. Last year, Mexico did 400 billion dollars worth of business with the U.S. That's more than Argentina and Brazil combined.
But whatever the set of reasons behind the Pew findings, immigration is always determined by both pull-and-push - the need to leave a place is as crucial as the lure of a new destination.
So, are we losing our allure?
If that's the case, that's not good news. The U.S. has always benefitted from being demographically dynamic. A major advantage we have over Japan, Europe, and even China is that our population will continue to expand. And it's been expanding with young people who are hard-working and full of drive and pay lots of taxes.
Look at the data: The median age in the U.S. was about 37 years in 2010. China's was lower at 34 years. But come 2050, that dynamic will be reversed, thanks to decades of Beijing's one-child policy and American immigration. The median age here will be 40 but in China it will hit nearly 49 years.
An aging country creates a deficit of workers and a surplus of retirees who spend. Our demographic advantage holds true against a number of countries. We're projected to be better off demographically than France, the UK, Korea, Spain, and, of course, Japan.
This demographic advantage is entirely due to immigration. The United States has a fertility rate not so different from European countries, so our population gains (and these are gains in young people) come entirely from immigration.
The Pew Study shows we've clamped down on illegal immigration. But it also shows that Mexicans don't want to come here as much legally as they did before. So it is actually a mixed picture.
In trying to one-up each other on building bigger and higher fences, demonizing illegals, and hoping that they self-deport, we seem to have forgotten that it is the spirit of acceptance and hospitality that has made America so attractive to legal immigrants for centuries. Let's hope we can stay that way.

Mitt Romney: You say you have created jobs. What is the average pay of these jobs? Is the average enough to make a mortgage payment in a nice middle-income area? Or have you created minimum wage jobs that keep Americans at poverty level? Don't just stand there and say you've created jobs, Mr. Romney. I want to know if your jobs can feed and house an average middle-class family of three. By the way, I have worked for a state government agency for over 15 years. I've received two promotions and consistently get Stellar evaluations. I make less than $32,000 a year dealing with irate people, collecting child support and seeing impoverished children all day long. Don't shoot off your mouth about making me work for less than the average tax payer. I DO A JOB NO ONE ELSE WANTS. And by the way, my benefit premiums continue to rise, year after year and WE, state of Florida workers, have not had a cost of living increase since 2006. Watch what you say from here on out. Please.

Are Americans really too lazy to want construction and factory jobs? Could it be that we are not willing to work 12 hours a day for minimum wage and no benefits. Are illegal Mexican immigrants better workers because they will put up with any kind of abuse by employers? Could it be because they are afraid of arrest and deportation if any issue arises.

If your job is so bad and pays so little why are you still there? Perhaps you want a job that requires little education yet pays what you think it deserves?
I'll say this again: Education is not always the path to a better future! Sometimes it can lead down a road of despair and long term debt. Unless you get a degree in a field that is in demand and someone WILL HIRE YOU, what good will it do? Look nice on a resume? I personally have a 4 year degree in BA, yet, 2 friends of mine do not. Guess who is making better money? Not because of WHAT they know, but WHO they know. They got into corporations with a high school degree and schmoozed their way up. I know several people who have been hired not on qualifications or education, but because of someone they know. It's been that way for ages, and will always be that way. Kids coming out of college nowadays better have more than just a degree, they need luck and a prayer.
@Devils advocate – Perhaps you haven't noticed unemployment numbers are still fairly high. If the actual percent of unemployed who are still out of work and no longer eligible to collect were reported the actual number would be closer to 18%.
With the state of our economy I know there are people who don't care for their current job but only stay because it's a paycheck and they might have some health benefits.
It's even been proven many businesses will NOT hire you if you are unemployed even if you do have the skills, others give less consideration to people over 45+\- years old.
Or perhaps you are one of those that the economy has no effect on and couldn't care less about those that have to work for a living.
@lisa – your argument is based on the assumption that education is something you pay for... Education of yourself should be a lifelong endeavor and requires no degree. The people you know are payed for their skills regardless of how they acquired those skills; regardless of your personal assumptions about those skills. Otherwise yes, a degree does not include any guarantees for your future. Good luck.

No, I doubt if Romney wants to create minimum wage jobs, because it would lead to a law enactment that guarantees minimum wage. On the other hand more employers would hire illegal immigrants as work force to avoid paying the illegally protected minimum wage.

government interference in the housing market has made prices rise so that the middle class can't afford them. When you make interest rates low, everyone can get a mortgage which increases demand while supply remains constant. That equals rising home prices. Thanks government interference.
I would have to agree with you, ot only on the "jobs" that Mitt claims to have created, However unlike you I work for a major International company specializing in "services" over the almsost 30 years I have worked here I have seen many of my coworkers\colleagues layed off or as they say "Resource Action". Those laid off have had their jobs mostly "redistributed" to places like Asia and South America. Along with this my pay has been relatively flat for the past 15 years. Others have had to take mandatory pay cuts and <1% increases or considered good. And although our jobs are shipped over seas they continue to take advantage of H1B and the like visa's to bring in workers because "US workers don't have the skills".
I have no problem with immigration as a number of my grand parents parents and relative immigrated here from Europe. How ever I do not agree with ILLEGAL immigration. illegal immigrants although may not pay State\Federal inconme tax do contribute in other day to day taxes ie sales tax etc. However what they take out of the system far outweighs what they put in. Illegal immigration puts a heavy strain on the US economy.

When my parents came to the United States, the first thing they did was to get out of their WET clothes. Secondly, they started looking for work of any kind so that they could eat.No food for three days until a WHITE American found them and gave them several sandwiches and enough money so that they could take a bus to an area that was hiring.All five of his children are anchor babies. My oldest sister did not go to college because she had to work to help support the family.One of the remaining four earned a bachelor's degree, one got a master's degree and the other two have doctorate degrees. None of us have ever collected unemployment or welfare benefits, have always paid our fair share of taxes and all are now comfortably retired. Our father worked for thirty five years and never earned as much as one hundred dollars a week,and until the day he died always said that this is the finest country in the world. If you can not make it here, you have no one to blame but yourself.

I agree with the posts that suggest we cut off all welfare programs and other handouts from our tax dollars. The food stamp program began as a 4 month "temporary" solution to help families that had a setback. It was supposed to encourage people to help themselves to a productive means, but clearly we now see it abused to the point of ridiculous. My taxes are now paying for free cell phones as a necessity? It's been put on a list of items that a household "cannot live without." Outrageous! Let's not forget the free rent, utilities, cable system services and daycare also paid for with taxes. We now make it desirable for people to continue with decades of receiving public assistance! ENOUGH!
Some of us are behind on child support (admittedly my fault, after losing a high income I didn't seek to have it reduced for over two years because I felt I would find another good job, just paid what I could) for the very reasons you mention. I make way less than you now and I feel blessed just to be above minimum wage. Worst thing is I'm not as involved as I could be due to finances. Guilt and hopelessness rule my world now.

At 32,000 per year you are working poor. That was the same wage I was paying journeyman construction workers 20 years ago. Inflation (theft by Congress) has eaten the purchasing power of those dollars to the point that you can not buy a car and a house on those wages.

I do not like Romney and will not vote for him. But I also do not like people complaining about there poor choices. It is a dog-eat-dog world and you need to look out for yourself. Go to school (college/tech) and get an education where there is a demand for it. If noone else will do your job its because it probably sucks but guess what, you chose to do it, and for 15 long years so shut up. Besides most government jobs are unnecassary anyway so enjoy the 32,000 your earning for doing a meaningless task.

Maybe illegal immigration has decreased, but there are a lot of them here in Florida. They work for places like Ameri-Pride, doing outside maintenance of office parks and such, and they're on the roofs of houses pulling off old roofs – doing the grunt work that use to pay an American man a decent wage. Of course the roofing company won't put a sign on the lawn while the roof is being torn off.... they wait until the illegals are gone.

We would fly the roofs and our boss had 2 Mexican crews to deck and dry them in. Not becouse he didn't want to give the work to Americans, But he had to hire Mexicans to speed things up. If you're slow, someone else will get the job. Yah, like contractors Check green card...lol. They would be cutting thier own throat.

Many of these construction jobs were done by our parents not to long ago. In those days construction jobs paid a good wage. However as kormallain notes, Mexicans will do the work for 40-50% less. Why do you REALLY think that is?
It's not an issue that "US" workers won't do the work it's an issue that employers don't want to pay a decent wage.
This wage war has been going on for several decades. US workers are making less today compared to years past based on the value of the dollar today vs 10,15, 20 years ago.
Employers across all industries have caused workers pay to stagnate and in many cases to decrease through forced pay cuts. Many employers only hire part time workers so they don't have to offer health benefits. Then there are those that hire illegal workers for what ever reason.
Thank goodness, a reduction in illegals? They speak English when they want something, no "Engla" if you want something. They do not make their kids mine, are completely disrectful. And, they know how to count their American dollars!

I reside in San Antonio, Texas, it is the most violent, uneducated, high pregnancy rate city in America, majority of them are Hispanics. The other half are African American's. Actually I've visited Mexico and lately they have done major improvements.
Mexico is a sh!thole because of the Spaniards and their class systems, and the (white) Mexican Elite who run it. They are responsible for the corruption and poor economic situation, not the people you see coming over to work. The people you see coming over to work are the poorest Mexicans who have absolutely no say in the way their country is run. Gas is about 3.50/gallon, give or take depending on the transfer rate, here in Puerto Vallarta.
The problem here in Mexico isn't whether or not we have oil, we have plenty and it's state owned so it should be low-priced. The problem is we have no refineries, they have to send it to the US or other countries and they sell us our own gas for whatever market price is.
@Omar – I have not done the research but assuming your statements are true then you need to ask your government why they have not built any refineries. Also, humans seem to love extremes and typically simplify, generalize, or exaggerate their arguments to add strength to their message / beliefs, etc.. This behavior does us all a disservice by painting a false picture of reality. For example: is it more likely that the Mexican government sells the crude resource at market or some other predefined price structure as opposed to simply sending it away? -Possibly writing off or capitalizing on the difference between crude export and refined import.

Actually, they can and do get tax refunds. There was a big story on it not to long ago on how they qualify for the earned income tax credit. Plus I know for a fact many (unless they have a job paying under the table) pay taxes and file taxes every year. They can get SS #s, some come here legally with a visa then stay over they have a SS# and can use it just like everyone else.

I have to disagree. First, the US isn't aborting babies, some of its citizens are. Why? perhaps like you said, maybe they can't afford another child. However, there are millions of unwanted children in the U.S. already, born to parents who can't afford them, U.S. citizen parents who, for one reason or the other, chose not to use birth control, knew they could not afford the child, showed up at a hospital and had the child, and who are now on Medicaid, welfare, food stamps, etc. to support the child, or children. Until policies change where, there is no more aid for any other children after the first child that you can not support, this trend will continue. Everyone old enough to engage in reproductive actions knows where a child comes from. Either use birth control, be able to afford the child and support it, care for, and love or abstain. the issue with immigration from Mexico and south of the border is:
-mostly unskilled, hence limited to low paying labor jobs
-little to no english skills, hence limited to.... low paying labor jobs
-no efforts to actually learn the language and adapt... huge latin subculture with tv stations, radio stations, supermarkets, etc.
-high birth rate which "breeds poverty" and ensures that their kids won't see any college either (maybe while working on the lawn on the campus, but not from inside)
-no assimilation, they see themselves as "mexicans" living in the U.S.... not "americans" living in the U.S.
-last but not last... illegals don't pay income taxes and social security taxes ... yet they flock to the ER, give birth to their babies for free and use other benefits the average tax payer has to fund.... hardly a "benefit" for society...

It sucks how I see my friends struggle to try and get an education just because they are immigrants. I actually witnessed my friend cry to a teacher because she is not allowed to get financial aid. But you know what, I also witnessed her parents tell her "We Will Get You Through College No Matter What." She is my best friend. Her parents are extremely hard working & they don't have all these benefits everyone seems to say they get. No foodstamps, welfare, none of that.

First of all, Mr. Zakaria you may want to check your facts. Illegal immigration is not just coming from Mexico. There illegals from other countries, and is not limited to only South America. And, second of all, an American is ANYONE that is born in this continent and it is not exclusive to the United States.
The United States is a mature and declining economy. Central and South America are providing cheap labor which is pushing their economies straight up. At this rate in another 20 years Mexico will be building that fence.
The only way to reverse this trend is to do what Teddy Roosevelt did. Eliminate the large corporations and re-localize all business. When the game is over someone has to hit the reset button.

While that is true, social security tax payments are paltry compared to the Earned Income Credit and Child Tax Credit that illegals collect from the government. I reply to you here because I am unable to do so above. Yeah! Many times I have thought about changing my name in order to distance myself from the Latino/Hispanic crowd. The US media, liberal media such as CNN in particular, use the label "Hispanic/Latino" as a codeword to refer to the huge crowd of illegal immigrants coming from Mexico. As I explained to somebody a while ago, I am no more "Hispanic" in that sense than WASP Americans are British or Nigerians (yep! Nigeria has English as official language). I am college educated and came to the US legally (L1B->H1B->Greencard->US citizenship). In all it took me 9 years of legally waiting in the line and paying a lot of money in filing/attorney fees to get my US citizenship that I cherish so much. During that time, I paid my taxes both to the IRS and to the state of California-they were generally in the top 10-15% of income earners.

Every day, I see hardworking immigrants from Mexico in the fields, in restaurant kitchens, in roofing, construction, auto mechanics, etc. I am proud to live in a place with honorable, hard-working neighbors such as these. We are a nation of immigrants and your ancestors and mine came from somewhere else, too.

Anyone who's spent a little time in Mexico, South America and even Europe falls in love with the culture and passion of those people. It is only when you've been fortunate to be in those places that you start to question the lifestyle in the U.S. Unfortunately for this country, not everyone has had to oportunity to travel, really get to know other cultures and open up their mind a bit... kinda sad.

Even with the declining Mexican birth rate and improving economy the flow is likely to turn positive again as the US recovers.

A couple of factual errors: US growth is not "entirely from immigration." US rate of natural increase is 0.9%. Of that, 0.6% comes from births while only 0.3% comes from immigration. Also, our growth rate of 0.9% is higher than that of most European countries, not "about the same." Some of them even have negative growth rates.
The primary reason why illegal immigration has fallen off so dramatically is economics and not what people think. Most of this is agricultural driven. The restrictive laws of AL, AZ, CO and other states have forced American agricultural firms to relocate into Mexico. If the needed labor cannot get to the farmers, the farmers will go to the labor. This has devastated the economies of these states and will continue to do so for a very long time to come. The American farmer leases/buys land in Mexico, buys farm equipment in Mexico, buys gas in Mexico, pays taxes in Mexico and so on. He then takes the product he grows and sells it in the USA. Don't believe me? Take a good look at the produce you buy and see where it is from. Very little of it comes from the USA.
I'm thrilled when those tax cheats leave. If every other business has to follow state laws and pay at least min wage why should these farmers get an advantage by having a slave wage force? Don't forget environmental protections they don't have to follow in Mexico, I always chuckle at these so called organic products from there.

I've been to Mexico a number of times, and not to the more popular touristy places either. It is not a bad place. American's "perception" of Mexico and Mexicans is mostly unfounded bias ( thanks to the media ), as they have never been there.
The real issue is opportunity. America ( USA as opposed to what is properly "America" ) is known as a place of opportunity. But in Mexico there are also opportunities. All you have to do, in either place, is simply be sensible and work hard. And those who do, in either place, succeed.

Being a tourist and living in the culture of Mexico are two different things entirely. The Mexicans living in the building next to mine are planning to return to Mexico. They don't like it here. The cost of living is too high.
The cost of living increases and budget cuts in CA also have to be a factor. Around 25% of illegals from Mexico live in California, where enforcement is non-existant but the cost of living is skyrocketing while services for the poor are being cut. Illegals might not have to pay taxes but they can't avoid sales tax which in LA county is almost 10%. Utility rates keep going up, LA added a trash tax, the list goes on and that just adds to the fact everything is getting more expensive. The price of gas here is $4.39 a gallon, groceries are going up- all the while services for the poor are being cut. Immigrants kids aren't going to the fantastic CA schools of the 60's their going to underfunded schools that are falling apart with metal detectors and gang problems. Two teachers in LAUSD schools serving Latino communties were arrested for well publicized abuse of students. Child care and after school programs are being cut to the bare minimum.
The legal immigrants cleaning ladies where I work often complain about how expensive everything is in LA. They couldn't use one of their trucks for a month because they didn't have the money to renew the registration (they drive around their non-legal employees). If their workers go back to Mexico it's not because there are more opportunities in Mexico or enforcement's to tough- it's just too darn expensive. Those immigrants only here to make money to spend back home aren't going to kill themselves scrubbing toilets when they have nothing left over at the end of the month to support their family back home.
Illegals who have American born kids can simply go back to Mexico and wait for their children to turn 21 when their children can sponsor them to come to the US legally. Then they can get the medical care, welfare benefits etc. If Amnesty is talked about before then, I'm sure there will be many flooding back over the border to claim their citizenship and the gov't will be hard pressed to prove most ever left.

Jerry Brown and the Democrats in CA might be doing a lot more to end illegal immigration with their tax and spend budgets and 'green' economy than the Republicans in Arizona. More regulations, more taxes and it's making no difference in the quality of life. WSJ had a good article about the California Exodus. Author (a democrat) estimates 4 million native born Americans have left California in the last decade, primarily young families.

We should simply march in and absorb Mexico. We would then have a relatively tiny border to protect down in Central America plus the waters on either side. We would mandate that English is required (heck, it only took a few generations for the Castillians to get almost all the Mexica (Axtecs), Totonecs, Maya, etc. speaking Spanish instead of Nahuatl, Mayan, etc.) as well as a minimum education. In the long run, that would likely limit the influx of Hispanics into the rest of the USA because there would be a higher standard of living and less population explosion in Mexico.
Since the government says they can't tell us how many illegal Mexicans live in the USA, they can't begin to tell us there are fewer, but if there were it would be due to Obama's economy not any enforcement by Washington. Solution to the problem is build lg 5 mile,10 mile city surrounded by a mote or in middle of everglades area or find deserted island in middle of ocean to send all hard core prisoners, lifers that they got concrete evidence against to a new home like escape from new yk! Money could be saved and jobs could be created from that to give legal law abiding citizens a job but also women need to control the no of babies they have unless they can afford to feed and take care of them! If drug lords set up permanent locations in your city, where all the drug users knew they could get what they wanted, would you think it was a good idea to focus your law enforcement efforts on rounding up the users every day and trying to figure out how to make them go home or stay home? There is a difference between legal and illegal immigrants! I do not know why that is so hard to understand for so many people. I get so sick of hearing people say that illegals are just "immigrants"! The difference is that people who go through the US immigration system legally actually have to put up with all the nonsense that goes with it, such as having to shell out thousands of dollars to the government, not to mention all the time that goes into the paperwork to be here legally. My wife came here legally, and it is sick to hear about the government granting amnesty to those who did not go through the same process she did. Here in Texas I also get tired of seeing so many illegals with social security benefits when they didnt pay anything into the system or are here illegally. I will not speak for everyone in the south but I think that most of us are fed up with the issue because we actually have to deal with its problems on a day to day basis, whereas others who maybe live in areas that do not currently have the problem I wish for you live with it every day. I can say this from first hand experience that the elementary school(s) here had focused their attention on Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) celebrations for months having all of the kids practicing the dances etc. so that all of the non-illegals could know all about Mexican Independence. Who cares!!! Why should we be celebrating Mexican Independence? When the principal was asked to take a poll of the students to see how many knew about the 4th of July and its significance, only a small number of them could actually respond with the correct answer. Pathetic. Maybe if the illegal problem is resolved, the jobs that are left empty "that nobody will do" will maybe get filled again if the employers have no other option but to pay more for the work to be done...legally. The system is screwed, and needs to be mended. We must deal with the illegal problem at hand, and swiftly end it.
I understand your frustration because I live in a state that is heavily impacted by illegal immigrants and I work for a school district. But I have a real problem with the way you refer to them. When you call them "illegals", not "illegal immigrants", but just "illegals" it's like saying that they are not human beings. It especially bothers me when you refer to children as "illegals". They had nothing to do with their parents decision to come here, and in elementary schools, I'm betting that most of the kids you refer to as "illegals" were actually born here and are American citizens. Whether or not you like it, they not here illegally. Their parents are, and I'll grant you that if the parents hadn't come here the kids wouldn't be here either. But let's please separate the acts of the parents from the total innocence of their children for any wrongdoing.
The simplest thing we could do is to require that every single business in the U.S. be required to use e-Verify. Let's talk about why illegal immigration has not been resolved. Illegal immigration does only one thing; it provided business with cheap labor while shifting the costs that business would typically have to pay (taxes, benefits, a decent wage) to the TAXPAYER. The only reason that illegal immigration has not been solved is that the TAXPAYER has been giving companies a free-ride on our backs. Arizona's law proves that illegals will self-deport once laws are passed that make it even somewhat inconvenient to be in this country. It would be nice to see a more accurate reporting of what is really going on. What are (all) of the immigrants coming to America busy doing? Good or Bad? Who is in a gang? Who is running a sophisticated mafia organization? Who is here spying for any America hater nations? Who is here milking the American system for every dime they can? Who is here just being a decent person? What irritates me is: 1) This is "always" about spanish people (latinos) as if no one else comes here and does the US good or harm. 2) We always have to hear the liberal or conservative arguments separately, instead of in a truly objective facts backed article. 3) The rhetoric coming from the stupid left and right is always too "polarized" the left seems to feel that immigrants can do no wrong and the right seems to spew forth with all they are doing wrong. They are doing right and wrong and, guess what? They are not all "latino" immigrants!!! I feel like this nation has been debating this without being able to see the whole picture for too many decades now. This should be a lot easier: If we've let too many in-we've got to stop that and apologize to no one. Focus on more than just the latinos, I've read up on who's in charge of what used to be italian mob territory (they ain't latinos!). Deport them! People coming here should not be able to milk the system and people who have always been here should not be milking the system either. I agree, immigration is good for our nation but, we should be able to come up with legal and fair solutions, foreign policy which extends past the inside of our politician's office doors, and something a lot better than the "right's" fence quick dumberer fix or the "left's" feel sorry for being to mean program.

Admits to maternity wards at public funded hospitals is right at 60 percent When that number goes down, I'll believe it. Mexico still sends its citizens to the USA for the free medical care. So much so that physicians in Mexico saw a 70 percent reduction in domestic patients between 2000 to 2008. That's because Mexico makes its resident pay a co-pay for medical services. In the USA there is no copay for medicare and medicaid.

Why is it hostile to not want illegal immigrants in this country. The US citizen(legal) can't help the fact that we are sitting next to Mexico, so of course most of the illegals are from there. I for one do not hate Mexicans, I just detest illegal immigrants. Come here legally and no problem. But here is where I will be considered a racist. Why do we need more Mexicans to become culturally diverse? There are plenty of nationalities here and we don't need to become another Mexico. I want people from all over, not just from down south.

Economic expansion via population explosion is NOT a good thing! There is a reason for the China one-child policy. We really shouldn't repeat that mistake here. It may be economically good for the generation that is growing, but, just like the deficit, you pay the price later through reduced quality of life. Real estate prices go through the roof, people are living on top of each other like lemmings, natural resources are used up, and the environment is destroyed. Just look at China today! Would you want to live like that?
Excellent point. The aging Chinese population is a phenomena by design. I absolute do not endorse some of the radical methods that the Chinese government used to enforce the one-child policy, but it was a wise and necessary policy for China to have a chance to dig themselves out of poverty. With projected population growth at the time, China would quickly run out farm land and food source if the it was not curbed immediately. Even with one-child policy, China is still the most populated country in the world dependent on food import to sustain itself. The good news is that it also developed a robust industry with a well educated and hardworking workforce. With productivity gain and a strong belief in savings for retirement, they will have no problem to support the aging population.
Yes, please give up on us and stay in Mexico with your 3rd-world culture.

There is a difference between legal and illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants have a high cost and little benefit to a nation, though many groups disingenuously state that they are not a financial drain. Just as lower income earners who already live here, they in general pay little or no taxes, yet still demand medical care, school, and many other services. We cannot simply "leave alone" illegal immigrants who have such a high cost and have cut in line in the immigration process.

The quality of immigrants is the key.
There is no sign that the United States is losing its allure with legal immigrants who are educated. There are still plenty of opportunities for them, but we need to make it easier for foreign college graduates to stay in the country. Those are the people who will only be an assett. As for those who come for the service market: so long. In the end they pay out less in taxes than the contribute. I do not consider this point a negative.
When you lazy office workers get those computers to cut your yard you won't need laborers. Until then the immigrants are what make America run today.

I generally strongly agree with Fareed on most issues. But I disagree with the argument that immigrants from south of the border would reduce the average age of the population and therefore is a good thing.
Average age does not imply the productivity of the population. You could have a population with a large senior group and a large youth group that make up a young average age. But the assumption that there are more people in productive age group is wrong. This may very well be the case as new immigrants from south of the border do tend to have more children per family. Secondly, more people in productive age does not mean overall higher productivity. Educated workers are far more productive than workers with only labor skills. If we just have a lot of poorly paid young immigrants labors without much education and with a large family to feed, they not only will not contribute to improve the economy, they may even become a burden.
I don't mean to stereotype immigrants from south of the border. But you can't ignore the statistical data to make your argument.

No, not all of us are immigrants. Some of us were native Americans, but we lived in the shadow. Many of those native Americans were forced to leave their land and adopt other names. The drop in illegal immigration is welcome news, but our Federal Government has its hands full with 11 million illegal aliens that already in the United States causing massive problems. We have many structural problems in the United States that need to be fixed in order to promote growth here. Yup, my dad recalls when the New York Times addressed the migration of Puerto Ricans (which were American citizens, by the way) into the city as the "Puerto Rican Problem" during the late 1940's. It was particularly offensive in light of the fact that Hitler had addressed the "Jewish Problem" in the press just a few years earlier, and the implications that it had. I am anglo. I was born in the midwest. I don't see much redeeming about living in the U.S. anymore. We have become to self centered and too selfish. I would love to leave but I only speak english. I was just discussing this with my circle... Not about Mexico, but about our attractiveness. Forget Jobs, Jobs are created by a need that needs to be resolved. (where there is a problem, there is opportunity) Because major industries are governed by the stock market which also in turn governs the government... which governs information..which we receive (Sadly) from ( mainly) the media... This is a good article to speculate on the southern illegal migration but the clear reality is that the large population of people immigrating from the south are not from mexico but from the central and south america.. Large bogeys filled with them enter mexico and then cross the border.These are the people who provide services in all kinds of sectors- plantation, gardening,servers,drivers to helpers. If ever legally they tried they would be brutally denied for their lack of paperwork or qualifications or monetary stability. But they work hard earn and also spend in the US. Only a part of the money as a whole goes back to their homeland as they get so engrossed in the US culture that they feel a part of it. The money revolves and comes back to the same country. Since the weaker US economy has already reduced the migration it makes no sense to spend more of its getting weak dollar amount on building fences at the border.The same people who are being thrown out fo the country would be the ones to work upon the fencing system.

The U.S. has had its Golden Age, life will get harder and the goods we enjoy will become more expensive. Has anyone considered the trickle down economics of the billions of dollars coming into Mexico because of the War on Drugs? I live in Mexico and where the roads used to be full of junkers I see new cars. I see more well dressed Mexicans than ever. I see the standard of living rising. I'm not saying that NAFTA hasn't contributed a lot, and I abhor the violence but I have been mulling over just how much the War on Drugs is contributing to the Mexican economy.

Fareed, you are wrong to concern yourself about the flow of legal immigrants slowing down due to a crack down on illegal immigration. My wife is a legal immigrant, now a citizen, and counts herself as one of those who want illegal immigration stopped. We are all taught that there is a right way and a wrong way to do certain things. Moral ambiguity and moral equivalency should not be defenses for those who knowingly cross our borders illegally.
I am white and I serve in the US Marine Corps with many Mexicans and they're all great guys willing to fight for this country just like I am. Racism is stupid. In fact, I've served with a Jamaican and a Filipino who weren't even US Citizens! And a Puerto Rican too! Another thing that helps Mexican exports is high oil prices. It means that it is alot more expansive to ship things from China. High oil prices favors factories being placed in Mexico rather than China.

Construction trades are high skilled jobs that Americans go to school to learn as apprentices. I am a journyman carpenter out of work because Obama gave all of our construction trade jobs to illegal mexican aliens. He also gave 22 million job work orders to illegal aliens, while 25 million Americans are out of work. Anchor babies are also illegal aliens. The hiring of illegal aliens does not do the economy one bit of good. It only puts Americans out of work. Obama seems to think, only mexicans can work construction. Illegal means illegal, and anyone who does not care about this countries laws, does not give a damn about this country. This country was at it's best before cheap slave labor came around. We will continue to be a failed economy as long as we have cheap labor, and why not, we can't buy anything with no money to make the wheels turn. We all lose.

I'm an American and I see that when it's in our backyard then we say or do something about it but when it's 1000 miles away from where we live then it isn't much of an issue. To deny anyone the right to eat and work and live because of status quo is the same as saying when it comes my turn to be poor and without everything then it's ok for people with a good life to deny my existence to survive. That is not ok and what people are doing to immigrants is just selfish and immoral to the extent of everyones right to live a free and happy life. We can blame Mexicans for drugs into the U.S.A. but the real trouble are the people in the United States that are buying these drugs. Mexicans are not the problem, it's the way society has become selfish and afraid because of all the lies and propaganda that media shoves down everyone's throat. We are all human no matter where we are born thats the truth and fact at which no media can take away because as soon as someone believes that getting rid of someone because of race is alright then it means it's ok to get rid of those that believe it to be true. If we are to get to a place in our lives that defines us as being human and superior at being that then we need to stop listening to scare tactics and start lending a helping hand to our friends to the south of the border because although there are some bad people in Mexico just like elsewhere in the world that does not mean we give a death sentence to every Mexican that is looking for a better life and a just one at that. Lets turn this all around and stop blaming and start helping our fellow human brothers and sisters by giving in to compassion and realize our true calling as part of the solution not to be the arm of hatred and lies and dispair. Stop the construction of another Berlin wall and start helping those that need our help to rise and help the whole world get back on track to become one again. If you want peace then we have to let go of hatred and fear. Stop listening to false reports and believing in our media as if they are the key to happiness because that boat sailed away a long time ago.
The US should just buy Mexico.
No country in the world can afford an unlimited influx of immigrants, the carrying capacity of the country will be reached and then it will affect a country's living standard negatively. On the other hand many people from poorer countries will immigrate to other countries if they can have a higher living standard.
So it looks like a clash of interests. Therefore I think the best solution to such a problem is a strong growing economy of the more poorer countries, then people of such countries are more likely to stay in their home country. The problem is to how to get their economies growing.
The news about Mexico's growing economy wil be good for the USA, this will be the most effective way of curbing a
huge influx of immigrants and law enforcement of secondary importance.

How about Mexicans striving to fix Mexico and staying there?Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with legal immigration by Mexicans that are interested in becoming Americans. But I am sick and tired of a group of people that are too lazy to learn to speak English overrunning our schools and spending all of our education money on ESOL and the like. The Spanish seem to be the only immigrant group that wants to bring their entire culture and language here and refuse to assimilate. Every other immigrant population strives to become American but the Spanish push to have us print in Spanish, provide translation, and Spanish language education for free, and then offer nothing to this Country. We don't want that type of immigrant. We want people that want to be American. Otherwise, they bring us down. Its the responsibility of those countries to deal with their populations. There is no way America can indefinitely have "Never Ending Open Borders".
