Fareed's Take: U.S. has made war on terror a war without end

By Fareed Zakaria, CNN

Whatever you thought of President Obama's recent speech on Afghanistan, it is now increasingly clear that the United States is winding down its massive military commitments to the two wars of the last decade.

We are out of Iraq and we will soon be largely out of Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden is dead, and al Qaeda is a shadow of its former self. Threats remain but these are being handled using special forces and intelligence. So, finally, after a decade, we seem to be right-sizing the threat from terrorist groups.

Or are we?

While we will leave the battlefields of the greater Middle East, we are firmly committed to the war on terror at home. What do I mean by that? Well, look at the expansion of federal bureaucracies to tackle this war.

Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. government has created or reconfigured at least 263 organizations to tackle some aspect of the war on terror. Thirty-three new building complexes have been built for the intelligence bureaucracies alone, occupying 17 million square feet – the equivalent of 22 U.S. Capitols or three Pentagons. The largest bureaucracy after the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs is now the Department of Homeland Security, which has a workforce of 230,000 people.

The rise of this national security state has entailed a vast expansion in the government's powers that now touch every aspect of American life, even when seemingly unrelated to terrorism. Some 30,000 people, for example, are now employed exclusively to listen in on phone conversations and other communications within the United States.

In the past, the U.S. government has built up for wars, assumed emergency authority and sometimes abused that power, yet always demobilized after the war. But this is, of course, a war without end.

So we continue to stand in absurd airport lines. We continue to turn down the visa applications of hundreds of thousands of tourists, businessmen, artists and performers who simply want to visit America and spend money here, and become ambassadors of good will for this country. We continue to treat even those visitors who arrive with visas as hostile aliens - checking, searching and deporting people at will. We continue to place new procedures and rules to monitor everything that comes in and out of the country, making doing business in America less attractive and more burdensome than in most Western countries.

We don't look like people who have won a war. We look like scared, fearful, losers.

Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) takes a long time to alleviate. Sometimes it never does as is in the case of Jews. No matter how strong a barricade is the unconscious fear of people will not be cured. USA was the first country to recognise and study PTSD on her war veterans. Off course measures must be globally taken against terrorists. But the sufferers must also be concidered. What I wander is if a globally accepted definition of terrorism has been set?

Arab immigrant women are vulnerable to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because of gender, higher probability of being exposed to war-related violence, traditional cultural values, and immigration stressors. A valid and reliable screen is needed to assess the incidence of PTSD in this population. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of an Arabic language version of the symptom items in the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) in a sample of Arab immigrant women (n = 453). Reliability was supported by Cronbach’s alpha values for the Arabic language version (0.93) and its subscales (0.77-0.91). Results of group comparisons supported validity: Among women who had lived in a refugee camp and had emigrated from Iraq – a country where exposure to war and torture is common - those who were exhibiting depressive symptoms (CES-D score above 16) or who reported moderate-to-severe impairment in functioning had significantly higher mean PDS total and symptom subscale scores than women who had not had these experiences or were not exhibiting depressive symptoms. Scores on the PDS and its subscales were also positively correlated with the Profile of Mood States (POMS) depression and anxiety subscales and negatively correlated with the POMS vigor subscale.

The first time this PTSD name was given was after the Vietnam war veterans were studied for the diagnostics.

The test result show that arab women are possibily in a culture where any stress will damage the individual psyche permanently. So, what you have is damaged or easily damaged individuals raising a larger than normal amount of children.
What has to be discovered is what part of their culture is creating the problem.

What no one seems to understand is that the government has a vested interest in maintaining the "Terrorism is a Threat" message. A population that lives in fear is a population that can be more easily controlled.

Well said...fear mongering is the best way to win lots of things....and imagine..with thousands of people working on harrasing their own....then the government is sure to run in debt or not..?? Nothing constructive here..to boost the economy..except for the few crook few industrialists ..Americans are sleeping and will ruin themselves with all the money gone and nothing to pay or build the country anymore...they will become the beggars of China / India and who knows what other countries. The same happened to USSR..' BANKRUPT !! The great Mr.Bush and Chenny and their friends are reaping the reward...and poor Obama has to deal with the curse.

rrock; Bin Laden had nothing to do with Clintons .com bubble bust or his fanni and freddi housing bubble that helped ruin the economy! The 2 most expensive congresses (11Oth and 111th) in US. history was totally controlled by the Democrats who spent us out of existence on social programs and Obama outspent eight years and 2 wars of GW. Bush's in the first 19 months of his presidency persueing a health care bill that nobody wants instead of trying to fix the economy! ...look it up at this .com site,"federalbudget"!

It's better to keep a "floating" definition of terrorism. That way we can spontaneously define it to cover whatever event or enemy pops up. It's much more "politically" useful.

This is the time I chose to answer you Patrick. Unlike the couregious Arab girl who risked death for education, I am a Turkish girl. Turks mostly have different genetic roots than Arabs. And Turkish women are not under the same conditions as some Middle East regions. Please refer to a world map to see the difference. To assist you: A map is a kind of picture showing that the world is actually round. However, I was probably brought up in a much better and protected society than you (assumed from your general conduct) and was actually educated in an American Collage called Robert College which was founded in 1863 and is generally accepted to be the rank 1 highschool in Turkey. The fact that I know what PTSD is because of GENERAL CALTURE which you may lack in your immediate surroundings. However, I guess my msg on PTSD still got through.

Re your May 6 blog post. Absolutely spot on, Fareed. Couldn't agree more.
The War on Terror has resulted in massive restrictions on our personal freedoms and, as you state, the creation of a massive bureaucracy to monitor and curtail our personal freedoms of movement and expression. I cannot believe the change in our country since 9-11. And we continue to elect the people who are doing this to us.

What makes you think there are only 2 parties? That's what they want you to think. Americans vote for who they think will win rather than for who they want to win. That's what keeps the Republicrats and Demoblicans in power: so-called "electability." It's not a game and it's not a gamble (at least it shouldn't be); it's an election and your life and freedom may depend on it.

Qaeda Plot to Attack Plane Foiled, U.S. Officials SayBy SCOTT SHANE and ERIC SCHMITT
        Published: May 7, 2012
WASHINGTON — The Central Intelligence Agency, working closely with foreign partners, thwarted a plot by the branch of Al Qaeda in Yemen to smuggle an experimental bomb aboard an airliner bound for the United States, intelligence officials said on Monday.
The intelligence services detected the scheme as it took shape in mid-April, officials said, and the explosive device was seized in the Middle East outside Yemen about a week ago before it could be deployed.
It appeared that Qaeda leaders had dispatched a suicide bomber from Yemen with instructions to board a flight to the United States with the device under his clothes, but that he had been stopped before reaching an airport.

Our political system is such that once an agency is created it takes on life of its own. The contractors have lobbyists and they can buy Congressmen and other officials. As long as that contiues the War on Terror will parallel the War on Drugs. We are prevented to tackle the root causes of a problem. Instead, FBI and other Homeland Security agencies keep producing 'terrorists' by encouraging disgruntled Muslim citizens to make statements that could be suspects. Mr. Zacharia is correct. War on Terrorism will continue to enlarge and survailance of our citizens will continue to grow. A side benefit of all this pleases NRA as more States are making laws favoring the gun sales. Why any foreigner would want to come here when in some states he or she could be shot by an eager neighborhood watch volunteer.

Me thinks perhaps you watch too much FOX News. The attacks of 911 could have been prevented by a reasonable amount of awareness and communication among the agencies that existed at the time. There is no need for Big Brother- the threat of terrorism is the excuse, not the reason.

Those who would give up their liberties for security deserve neither.

To SouthernCelt: I think you make a good point. To Amazed: most of us are as unwilling as you are to give up liberties in the name of security, but we recognize the value of security nonetheless. I don't see that walking through a metal detector before I get on an airliner involves the sacrifice of any liberties. Frankly, I'm delighted that someone is screening passengers, in an effort to prevent more armed hijackings. Could the screening process be better? Yes, it could be done better. But does the fact that it is not the best possible process mean it is of no value? No, it doesn't.

I have to go through the same security program when I walk in my county courthouse to get a printout of my property tax payments, or when I walk in the Federal building to apply for a passport. Loss of liberty? No, I don't think so.

Do you really believe there are airplanes crashing into buildings and people being otherwise blown up all the time in the entire world outside the US? Surely you don't. I am an American living in Europe, and I can tell you that I feel perfectly safe. The 4th Amendment, which ostensibly protects Americans from unreasonable searches and seizures, has been eviscerated by the federal government during their "war on terror." I find that pretty frightening.

For you, destroying the lives of Non-Jewish in Canada is a better motive and healthy economy. How about if you see it in reverse way? Ahhha, you will cry forever. Just the Jewish are living comfortably and watched other good Christian Ethiopian-Canadians being Culturally and Morally destroyed by Jewish Tugs, doesn't mean Canada's economy is better and it is a good place to live.

I seen Jewish people, attacking the Minority without realizing their past is their priority.
However, they NEVER ADMITTED and THEY ALWAYS DENIED what they did against Christian Ethiopian-Canadians. I believe, the way you see Nazie against Jewish, we see you as more Nazzies.

Fareed's take is right on. I live mostly in Colombia. Practically all whom I know that go to the embassy in Bogota are rejected. They just want to go to Disney or spend a couple of weeks touring. They have jobs and family here. There is no reason why they can't be allowed to go the legal route whilst others go the illegal way and gender a lot of sympathy for doing so. It is unfair and, frankly, arrogant of our government to be so high handed. So what, if a small percent of visitors oversatay their welcome?

Bravo! "War without end" and protection without sense or bounds will not stop until the American people accept some personal risk, pay the costs associated with war, and cease expecting government bureaucrats to completely guarantee their safety. Until some degree of risk and fear is accepted as normal in the new world we are the losers and the terrorists are the winners. The terrorists have succeeded in taking what we needed to protect the most–they changed the way we live in America. Time to turn it around.

Yes the core of the Al Qaeda is crippling but its affiliates are expanding.Today the world is not safer. The Taliban is still lurking round the corner in AfPak region. Only physical measures would not be enough to stop these acts. Religious feelings are so easy to play on. And there are still so many groups to play on these feelings. Maybe a global education on religions as well as a global tighter control on financial transactions can be a step forward.A control on not SOME countries but all of them. US is losing money because people who should have gone to the US and splurge go somewhere else because entering the US – the process – is never pleasant anymore. You will be greeted with the assumption that you are there to commit fraud, felony or terrorism unless you prove otherwise.

Many people don't like that idea.

I read in the FT a couple of years ago that the heightened security has a price tag of $1 Billion a day unrealized in the American economy. Over three years, that's over a trillion dollars. It's not hard to see that kind of drag is a contributor to the slowness of recovery from the Great Recession which officially ended midway 2009.

This so-called "War on Terrorism" is no more, no less that a war for Anglo-French-American expansionism into Central Asia and the Middle East and the reason that there is no end in sight is because too many people in these countries simply do not want Western rule!!! This goes to show just how greedy the right-wing thugs in Washington are!!!

"America has been hit by Allah at its most vulnerable point, destroying, thank God, its most prestigious buildings."
        - October 7, 2001, after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
"Acquiring weapons for the defense of Muslims is a religious duty... If I seek to acquire these weapons, I am carrying out a duty."
        - December 1998, when asked by an interviewer for Time magazine whether he had acquired chemical or nuclear weapons.
"The war is between us and the Jews. Any country that steps into the same trench as the Jews has only itself to blame."

The war on terror can never end until every last Islamofascist with dreams of killing Americans has been wiped off the face of the earth.

In Zakaria's home county, the Islamo crazies would saw his head off, dump his body in a ditch, and post the video on the Islamo Crazy You Tube Network.

If the process of killing an "Islamo-Fascist" involves collateral damage (ie dead civilians), and if collateral damage from American bombs causes anti-American anger, then I guess eventually we'll just have to kill everyone. But hey at least then we can be truly safe. One thing to think about is how you would react to a foreign power taking military action in America that results in civilian casualties, by remote control no less. Who would you sympathize with, the Americans who were saying that we had to rise up and defend our homeland from hostile outsiders, or the foreign power that was daily murdering your countrymen? My point is our war on terror is a gift to the true Islamo-fascists, because it makes their recruiting much easier.

        (2) Keeping silent:

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent.” (Reported by Imam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 1/329; see also Sahih al-Jaami‘, 693, 4027)

This is because in most cases, the angry person loses self control and could utter words of kufr (from which we seek refuge with Allah), or curses, or the word of divorce (talaaq) which would destroy his home, or words of slander which would bring him the enmity and hatred of others. So, in short, keeping silent is the solution which helps one to avoid all that.

It amazing. European and Asian nations think of America as paranoid and frightened adolescents who don't know what to do and invariably do the wrong thing. Why not spend billions in blood and money when you find out that some primitives overseas don't like you. The US has lost more soldiers since 9/11 than died on that day. The country is killing more of its people than the enemy is, not to mention turning its citizenry into potential enemies.

        (3) Not moving:
The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “If any of you becomes angry and he is standing, let him sit down, so his anger will go away; if it does not go away, let him lie down.”
The narrator of this hadeeth is Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), and there is a story connected to his telling of it: he was taking his camels to drink at a trough that he owned, when some other people came along and said (to one another), “Who can compete with Abu Dharr (in bringing animals to drink) and make his hair stand on end?” A man said, “I can,” so he brought his animals and competed with Abu Dharr, with the result that the trough was broken. (i.e., Abu Dharr was expecting help in watering his camels, but instead the man misbehaved and caused the trough to be broken). Abu Dharr was standing, so he sat down, then he laid down. Someone asked him, “O Abu Dharr, why did you sit down then lie down?” He said: “The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: . . .” and quoted the hadeeth. (The hadeeth and this story may be found in Musnad Ahmad, 5/152; see also Sahih al-Jaami‘, no. 694).
According to another report, Abu Dharr was watering his animals at the trough, when another man made him angry, so he sat down . . . (Fayd al-Qadeer, al-Manaawi, 1/408)

Probably the U.S needs a new agenda: stop with this imperialistical behavior and saving countries, because of interests and resources like crude oil. Probably the US should develop a kind of human rights list and spend energies and efforts not in wars and weapons, but in preventing and saving nature, people and places. There are so many things the world is in the need of: concepts, solutions and strategies. The war on terror polarized the world and augmented security all over the world. People are afraid. When G. Bush talked about 'evil" and ment Osama bin Laden and war on terrorists, he rose an icon: a devil in person! Probably it takes time, to get rid off such nonsens! (But with Tea party and many republicans the US will never do!)

Margaret, do not go apoplectic on us:
        Read what your allah says:
Among the benefits of this advice given by the Prophet (saws) is the fact that it prevents the angry person from going out of control, because he could strike out and injure someone, or even kill – as we will find out shortly – or he could destroy possessions and so on. Sitting down makes it less likely that he will become overexcited, and lying down makes it even less likely that he will do something crazy or harmful. Al-‘Allaamah al-Khattaabi, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his commentary on Aboo Daawood: “One who is standing is in a position to strike and destroy, while the one who is sitting is less likely to do that, and the one who is lying down can do neither. It is possible that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told the angry person to sit down or lie down so that he would not do something that he would later regret. And Allah knows best.”(Sunan Abee Daawood, with Ma‘aalim al-Sunan, 5/141)

Socialism refers to various theories of economic organization advocating public or direct worker ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources, and a society characterized by equal access to resources for all individuals with an egalitarian method of compensation. It is characterized by unequal distribution of wealth and compensation according to work done. Contrary to popular belief, socialism is not a political system; it is an economic system distinct from capitalism.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that a man said to the Prophet (saws), “Advise me.” He said, “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet (saws) told him, “Do not become angry.”(Reported by al-Bukhari, Fath al-Baaree, 10/456)
According to another report, the man said: “I thought about what the Prophet (saws) said, and I realized that anger combines all kinds of evil.”(Musnad Ahmad, 5/373)
        (5) Do not become angry and Paradise will be yours (a saheeh hadeeth, see Saheeh al-Jaam‘, 7374. Ibn Hajr attributed it to al-Tabaraanee, see al-Fath 4/465):
Remembering what Allah has promised to the righteous (muttaqeen) who keep away from the causes of anger and struggle within themselves to control it, is one of the most effective ways of extinguishing the flames of anger. One of the ahaadeeth that describe the great reward for doing this is: “Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allah will fill his heart with contentment on the Day of Resurrection.”(Reported by al-Tabaraanee, 12/453, see also Sahih al-Jaami‘, 6518)
Another great reward is described in the Prophet’s (saws) words: “Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allah will call him before all of mankind on the Day of Resurrection, and will let him choose of the Hoor al-‘Ayn whoever he wants.”(Reported by Aboo Daawood, 4777, and others. I believe that the threat has always been overstated. Most of the extra security we see today is not in response to an actual or even potential threat, it is done out of fear of having someting happen 'on my watch'. The silliness of hundreds of small towns and cities buying anti-terror HumVees and other expensive equipment is justs na example of hey, we don't need it but what the heck if we can have it, why not. Everytime someone leaves a shopping bag or a suitcase in an airport restroom the entier airport grinds to a halt. We need smart action not knee-jerk over-reaction.

You make it sound like they've built this new agency and increased government by 230,000 people. The vast majority of these people worked in the govt before DHS. The Coast Guard was under the Dept of Transportation before DHS. ICE and CBP were part of the Treasury Dept and Justice Dept. TSA was under the Dept of Transportation. The Secret Service was under the Treasury Dept. FEMA was its own agency. Other groups were under Agriculture, Energy, FBI, Defense, and GSA. DHS combined these groups in one Department to increase coordination and communication to try to prevent another 9/11.

        (6) Knowing the high status and advantages offered to those who control themselves:
The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “The strong man is not the one who can overpower others (in wrestling); rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.” (Reported by Ahmad, 2/236; the hadeeth is agreed upon) . The greater the anger, the higher the status of the one who controls himself. The Prophet (saws) said: “The strongest man is the one who, when he gets angry and his face reddens and his hackles rise, is able to defeat his anger.” (Reported by Imam Ahmad, 5/367, and classified as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 3859)
Anas reported that the Prophet (saws) passed by some people who were wrestling. He asked, “What is this?” They said: “So-and-so is the strongest, he can beat anybody.” The Prophet (saws) said, “Shall I not tell you who is even stronger then him? The man who, when he is mistreated by another, controls his anger, has defeated his own Shaytan and the Shaytan of the one who made him angry.”(Reported by al-Bazzaar, and Ibn Hajr said its isnaad is saheeh. Al-Fath, 10/519)
        (7) Following the Prophet’s (saws) example in the case of anger:
The Prophet (saws) is our leader and has set the highest example in this matter, as is recorded in a number of ahaadeeth. One of the most famous was reported by Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (saws), and he was wearing a Najraanee cloak with a rough collar. A Bedouin came and seized him roughly by the edge of his cloak, and I saw the marks left on his neck by the collar. Then the Bedouin ordered him to give him some of the wealth of Allaah that he had. The Prophet (saws) turned to him and smiled, then ordered that he should be given something.”(Agreed upon. Fath al-Baaree, 10/375)
Another way in which we can follow the example of the Prophet (saws) is by making our anger for the sake of Allah, when His rights are violated. This is the kind of anger which is praiseworthy. So the Prophet (saws) became angry when he was told about the imam who was putting people off the prayer by making it too long; when he saw a curtain with pictures of animate creatures in ‘Aa’ishah’s house; when Usaamah spoke to him about the Makhzoomee woman who had been convicted of theft, and he said “Do you seek to intervene concerning one of the punishments prescribed by Allah?”; when he was asked questions that he disliked, and so on. His anger was purely for the sake of Allah.

What a joke this article is. We needed to create this shield around the American people because of the threat coming to our shores. Kill or be killed. America had to adjust and we have. We are protecting our own. I don't mind standing in "aburd" lines at the airport, especially if it keeps me alive. I don't mind them denying VISA's if it makes it harder to slip in this country and kill. You miss the point and in doing so you put us all at greater risk!!! Thank goodness you are not in charge. Be careful with your words.

your cowardice is sickening. The world is dangerous and there will always be people with unreasonable vendettas, but the reaction of the US has bred far more terrorists than a thousand Bin Ladens could have. Ben Franklin said that a people who would sacrifice liberty for a little security deserve neither. I think he was right, but I suppose to you he would be a terrorist sympathiser who should be careful with his words. Pathetic.

You know, the attack on the USS Cole, the bombing of our embassies in Africa, the first bombing of the World Trade Center, not to mention the numerous plots that were in place before President Bush took the war to the terrorists. History has shown that appeasement never works, yet you seem to embrace the concept.

However much Mr. Fareed Zakaria may want to DELIBERATELY confuse US public opinion, the fact remains that:

    a) Firstly, NO SACRIFICE is too little to keep our nation safe.
    b) As the FBI, CIA have repeatedly stressed the fact that America has NOT seen any major attacks is NOT due to any reduction in resolve by Islamic terrorists BUT ONLY due to increased vigilance by the intelligence agencies. Can anyone imagine the consequences had the terrorists succeeded in their DIRTY BOMB plot, or the plot to SIMULTANEOUSLY bomb 8 trans-atlantic planes with liquid explosives!
    c) Check out this story "Intelligence agencies continue to keep America safe, stopping 51 terror plots since 9/11" on newsnet
    d) Sometime back Mr. Zakaria referred to European report which showed a significant reduction in Islamic terror acts, and said that the Europeans were UNNECESSARILY concerned about Islamic terror and suggested them to LOWER THIER GUARD. What Mr. Zakarai CONVENIENTLY FORGOT to mention was the number of attacks thwarted by the Europen intelligence agencies and the report itself cautioning Europeans NOT to take the eye off the ball from the threats from homegrown Islamic terror which reamied Europes #1 threat.

Mr. Zakaria's overt & covert effort to support his brethren continues!!!!!

The terrorists won on 9/11 because we allowed them to put the final nail in the coffin of our liberty. When we all - collectively - agreed to war without end, to the rise of the surveillance state, as a result of the attacks, the terrorists got what they most desired from us... terror. Permanent, expensive, draining, paralyzing terror.

The way to beat terror is not through spying and bombing and eternal war. The way to beat terror is to not be afraid. But I fear that America has lost the strength that would let us face terror with our humanity, compassion, and ideals intact.

The terrorists declared "war without end" on us. I guess you forgot about all the terrorist attacks prior to 9/11. Terrorism is their methodology, not their goal. Their goal is political change. When we give in to their demands is when we lose.

The way to beat the terrorists is to eliminate them before they strike. The way to beat the terrorists is to be so strong in our convictions that we will not give in to their demands that they realize their efforts are in vain. Like their fellow criminals, theirs is a crime of opportunity; they prey on those who are not vigilant.

The terrorists want us to feel exactly the way you do. They want us to let our guard down and feel compassion to their cause. THAT is how they achieve victory. Needless to say, that emboldens them to strike again for some other political cause. THAT is war without end: constantly capitulating to the terrorists.

        8) Knowing that resisting anger is one of the signs of righteousness (taqwaa):
The righteous (al-muttaqoon) are those praised by Allah in the Qur'an and by His Messenger (saws). Paradise as wide as heaven and earth has been prepared for them. One of their characteristics is that they (interpretation of the meaning) “spend (in Allah's Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, [they] repress anger, and [they] pardon men; verily, Allah loves al-muhsinoon (the good-doers).” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:134]
These are the ones whose good character and beautiful attributes and deeds Allaah has mentioned, and whom people admire and want to emulate. One of their characteristics is that (interpretation of the meaning) “. . . when they are angry, they forgive.” [al-Shooraa 42:47]
        (9) Listening to reminders:
Anger is a part of human nature, and people vary in their anger. It may be difficult for a man not to get angry, but sincere people will remember Allah when they are reminded, and they will not overstep the mark. Some examples follow:
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man sought permission to speak to 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him), then he said: “O son of al-Khattaab, you are not giving us much and you are not judging fairly between us.” ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was so angry that he was about to attack the man, but al-Hurr ibn Qays, who was one of those present, said: “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, Allah said to His Prophet (saws) (interpretation of the meaning): ‘Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish’ [al-A‘raaf 7:199]. This man is one of the foolish.” By Allah, ‘Umar could go no further after al-Hurr had recited this aayah to him, and he was a man who was careful to adhere to the Book of Allah.(Reported by al-Bukhari, al-Fath, 4/304).
This is how the Muslim should be. The evil munaafiq (hypocrite) was not like this when he was told the hadeeth of the Prophet (saws) and one of the Companions said to him, “Seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan.” He said to the one who reminded him, “Do you think I am crazy? Go away!”(Reported by al-Bukhari, al-Fath, 1/465). We seek refuge with Allah from failure.

        (10) Knowing the bad effects of anger:
The negative effects of anger are many; in short they cause damage to one’s own self and to others. The angry person may utter words of slander and obscenity, he may attack others (physically) in an uncontrolled manner, even to the point of killing. The following story contains a valuable lesson:
‘Ilqimah ibn Waa’il reported that his father (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: “I was sitting with the Prophet (saws) when a man came to him leading another man by a rope. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this man killed my brother.’ The Messenger of Allah (saws) asked him, ‘Did you kill him?’ He said, ‘Yes, I killed him.’ He asked, ‘How did you kill him?’ He said, ‘He and I were hitting a tree to make the leaves fall, for animal feed, and he slandered me, so I struck him on the side of the head with an axe, and killed him.’ . . .” (Reported by Muslim, 1307, edited by al-Baaqi).
Anger could lead to less than killing, such as wounding and breaking bones. If the one who caused the anger runs away, the angry person turns his anger in on himself, so he may tear his clothes, or strike his cheeks, or have a fit, or fall unconscious, or he may break dishes and plates, or break furniture.
In the worst cases, anger results in social disasters and the breaking of family ties, i.e., divorce. Ask many of those who divorced their wives, and they will tell you: it was in a moment of anger. This divorce results in misery for the children, regret and frustration, a hard and difficult life, all as a result of anger. If they had remembered Allah, come to their senses, restrained their anger and sought refuge with Allah, none of this would have happened. Going against the Shariah only results in loss.
The damage to health that results from anger can only be described by doctors, such as thrombosis, high blood pressure, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat) and hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breathing), which can lead to fatal heart attacks, diabetes, etc. We ask Allah for good health.

As statistics show while a vast majority of Muslims are indeed peaceful and law abiding, the FBI & CIA knowstoo well that this SILENT MAJORITY is also not helping in exposing the black sheep hiding amongst them, as it became abundantly clear during the Rep.Peter King's Congressional review on homegrown terror, and hence the need for enhanced vigilance!

Unfortunately this SILENT/SYMPATHETIC behaviour is NOT only limited to the common American Muslim, but also the much pampered, highly educated ones like Mr. Zakaria!

Wrong. Stupid Muslims started the war. They always start wars because they don't understand how to compromise with anyone else. They insist on everyone becoming Muslim. This, in spite of Muslim countries being the most backwards, uneducated and unbalanced societies. And it's easy to spot an ignorant Muslim since they try to equate Judaism, a monotheistic religion, with the mutli-diety religion of the Hindu's. There is no connection except in the mind of the ignorant hate-filled Muslims.

Thank George W. Bush for that. Anyone who's taken a Poli Sci 101 course knows that you NEVER create a new department like he did with DHS because it is impossible to get rid of them. Plus, there were 3 other Agencies already responsible for gathering the same information and doing the same work as DHS (FBI, CIA, and NSA). They were terrible at communication between themselves I agree (they still aren't that great now), but why not have a Joint Communications Board or something similar before you bring in another layer of bureaucracy.

Instead of freezing middle class federal workers pay and taking away benefits, how about our good fiscal conservatives take a look at getting rid of some of these layers of bureaucracy? DHS secretary makes 200K a year (then add in security costs, airline trips, etc.) so if we'd get rid of DHS, and a few other worthless departments that could have been easily reorganized into existing ones, we lose the Secretaries salaries, the deputies, the regional directors, etc. which is where the real waste of salaries is being spent.

But that won't happen cause our elected officials (both GOP and Dems) need a place to stick their friends when they get voted out. Why not give your friends a fat paying SES position with alittle power, right?

Bin Laden or one his leaders once said that they ,(the terrorists)broke America spiritually because they, the Americans thought they'd never be invaded by anyone on U.S. soil..They said after 9/11 ,we as a nation would never be the same and will always look over our shoulders because we're scared. They also mentioned hurting us economically because of the additional security that'll be needed for everyone's well being..They,the terrorists, played the phychological warfare card and its worked because of the added strain economicly on our already fragile system and our minds, thinking that we would never be violated because of our military might and was.But now here we are with Bushs security in place, just like a sci fi movie with no privacy and BIG BROTHER IS ALWAYS WATCHING OVER US.They won their part of the game didn't they, with a minimal stake in the game, and we'll pay for it for the rest of our lives because of our arrogence, that's just an agonizing part of war, there are no true winners....

What are the leaders of our country supposed to do? The first second someone dies because they relaxed a restriction has everyone freaking out and pointing fingers. The truth is, Americans are scared. We live in a society where the news media does a great job of scaring us about everything. People just want to live their lives and not live in terror. But for the most part, that's all we hear about.

People's paranoia has gone to 11 in this country, where everyone thinks there are conspiracies of power taking. Everyone is a afraid and feels powerless. Some stock up guns and food and prepare for unbelievable scenarios. While others shut themselves in and fear everything outside their door.

We're a scared nation. It's strange because it's one of the few times in history when we're not at war with another nation or involved in a Cold War that could spell Armageddon. The vast majority of Americans are safer than they ever have been in history. And yet I would argue that we're more afraid now than ever before.

The scanners and security aren't at the airport to protect you. They are there to make you feel safe so you'll be comfortable flying so the airline industry continues to operate. It's all being done to provide you with a feeling of safety.

This is exactly what Al-Qaeda wanted! They more or less have won, or at least by their own goals. This is their objectives as it is on Wikipedia, as Abdel Bari Atwan summarizes this strategy as comprising five stages:

    1. Provoke the United States into invading a Muslim country.
    2. Incite local resistance to occupying forces. (there was a news piece today showing the Taliban is growing)
    3. Expand the conflict to neighboring countries, and engage the U.S. in a long war of attrition.
    4. Convert al-Qaeda into an ideology and set of operating principles that can be loosely franchised in other countries without requiring direct command and control, and via these franchises incite attacks against countries allied with the U.S. until they withdraw from the conflict.
    5. The U.S. economy will finally collapse under the strain of multiple engagements in numerous places, making the worldwide economic system which is dependent on the U.S. also collapse leading to global political instability, which in turn leads to a global jihad led by al-Qaeda and a Wahhabi Caliphate will then be installed across the world. Atwan also noted, regarding the collapse of the U.S., "If this sounds far-fetched, it is sobering to consider that this virtually describes the downfall of the Soviet Union."

We've done most of the work yourself in bringing our down fall they have used our insecurities against us to their objectives. We've won the war, but we might lose the fight, I have hope for the future, but not very much as its seems to be now.

Indians need to stop hiding behind american skirts and face these elements face to face. And BTW the Indian double crossing Americans in Iran should cease immediately. After all the american taxpayers have done for Indians....the least they can do is say "how high" when the american masters say "jump".

Pakistan will thus span this region and provide the impetus for growth, prosperity and unity among these countries. These are new and exciting times for Pakistanis who should now look forward to their new leadership role aligned with Central Asia and Europe rather than the Subcontinent. We wish them much success as they have sacrificed the most during the past 30 + years creating a new world order.

US public opinion toward Pakistan is strongly negative — a February 2012 Gallup poll found that only 15% of Americans regard Pakistan positively (ONLY 2% very favorably!) even as 75% viewed India positively. (Israel favorable rating 71%, Palestinian Authority – 19%).

      • krm1007

@Amit-Atlanta-USA...So what? This comment was not about India so what is your point? Please don't insult the Pakistani's by comparing them to Indians. Also, India is no Israel...plllease! Now let me give you some statistics also..since you brought India into this discussion....
"In India, millions of girls are strangled, slowly starved or simply tossed in the trash. Moreover, in India, at least 1,370 girls are aborted every day. As a comparison, some 250 Indians die every day in road accidents. Terrorists killed about six people, on an average, every day in 2009. In the last two decades of economic progress, 10 million girls have died as such in India.
Indians have killed more human beings (girls particularly) than Al Qaeda and Talibans put together."
Now does this make India a bad country or Indians bad people...no....it is the sign of a society that is evolving and trying to improve itself. Now the Gallup Polls won't tell you this would it?

Lastly, the Americans should kiss the ground Pakistanis walk on. They won the Viet Nam war for Americans in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Hundreds of thousands of Pakistani soldiers and civilians have sacrificed their lives fighting this war on terror for the world. Moreover, they have spent Billions of dollars in doing so. The least the world including the Americans can do is say thank you , Pakistan. What has the Indian contribution been??? Double crossing Americans in Iran. Give me a brrreak.

        Advice On Dealing With Anger

Anger is one of the evil whispers of Shaytan, which leads to so many evils and tragedies, of which only Allah knows their full extent. For this reason Islam has a great deal to say about this bad characteristic, and the Prophet (saws) described cures for this “disease” and ways to limit its effects, among which are the following

"In the past, the U.S. government has built up for wars, assumed emergency authority and sometimes abused that power, yet always demobilized after the war. But this is, of course, a war without end."

Right, these were uniformed combatants from a sovereign nation. Just a little difference, wouldent you say? kind of kills your premise, but ill continue.

As long as there are Muslims who feel they need to kill people who dont believe the way they do and the moderates in the religion dont voice their displeasure, this will go on and on.

As someone who witnessed 9/11 live, was in the complex 2 hours before the events, and as someone who knows people that died that day, all of you cry babys are pathetic. YOur home, your car, your job, your possessions mean nothing if your dead.
While it is annoying and burdensome to get checked at an airport, im willing to do it to make sure that YOU dont have a bomb, i know i dont. If you really dont like it, dont fly, you have that right, just like the airlines have the right to check you for the safety of ALL of their passengers. Everyone has rights.

Violence by Arabs against the Jewish civilian population of Palestine was a periodic reality. During the Mandate period, whenever Arab dissatisfaction reached a peak, or when anti-Zionist, anti-Semitic Arab leaders needed to provoke the British authorities, rioting and Jewish casualties were created. Major rioting flared in Palestine during 1920-21, in 1929, and during the Arab Revolt of 1936-39. This was not so different from the experience of Jews all over Europe and was part of the motivation for creating a Jewish state where Jews could control their own security.

One of the recently beaten, tortured, and arrested Palestinian female journalists, Asma Al-Ghoul is a secular feminist and a journalist who has written brave articles about honor killings on the West Bank and in Gaza. Al-Ghoul has been harassed and arrested by Hamas before. Why? Ostensibly because she dared to laugh, wear jeans on the beach, and entered the sea, fully clothed, to swim. These were her crimes—plus the fact that she was a single woman (divorced, actually), out in public, not wearing hijab, and relaxing on the beach with—unbelievably—male friends.

        1) Seeking refuge with Allah from the Shaytan:

Sulayman ibn Sard said: “I was sitting with the Prophet (saws), and two men were slandering one another. One of them was red in the face, and the veins on his neck were standing out. The Prophet (saws) said, ‘I know a word which, if he were to say it, what he feels would go away. If he said “I seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan,” what he feels (i.e., his anger) would go away.’” (Reported by al-Bukhari, al-Fath, 6/337)

Gee Fareed, no military bias in THAT bit of reporting. No way. Foolhardy speculation like I just read is evidence that not everyone "gets it'. But some do. What does it take before the rabidly anti-military establishment is able to change channels and get past the idea that not everyone comes home from work, checks the market, grabs a Heiney, a paper, kicks in the control and kicks back for the evening. No, some folks, increasing in number, need bigger thrills to fuel their brand of relaxation, aka being fanatically irresolute about living to die killing folks like me and you. It's hard to grasp, but oh well. To avoid being out on this alone, here's what CIA director Panetta thinks about your speculation.

"I don't think there's any question that when you get the number one terrorist in the world, that we're a little safer today than we were when he was alive. But I also don't think we ought to kid ourselves that killing Usama Bin Ladin kills al-Qa'ida. Al-Qa'ida still remains a threat, they're still going to try to attack our country, and I think we have to continue to be vigilant and continue the effort to ultimately defeat these guys. We damaged them, but we still have to defeat them."

That's why the FBI, CIA, Mossad, MI-6, Indian RAW are fighting more battles INSIDE their own countries than outside!

The, War on terror – the War on drug – the War on poverty – the War on illiteracy – the War on cancer…
You cannot win over any thing you create a War on. We were terrorists on the British Empire, once upon a time.

The War on terror is terrorism on the life, economy, and principles of our planet.
The War on terror was & is a wind-fall for a handful of individuals, helping make more big government.

The Wars on terror; drugs, poverty, illiteracy & cancer will never find an end, because of special interests only interested in next years balance sheets.
Those interested in that War are not interested in “true” commerce, because they would not know it if faced with it – they want publicly funded unsustainable commerce for themselves.
The Wars on terror; drugs, poverty, illiteracy & cancer, have not been resolved because one cannot wage War on anything an expect to win; - change happens with enlightenment, wisdom & understanding.

The Wars on terror; drugs, poverty, illiteracy & cancer have been mismanaged by the politics of special interests.
Maybe we should have a; War on “irresponsible governance”, “politics” or “special interests”; but probably will not work either. But for certain; Fear is no way to manage a planet as connected as ours…

Whether you believe or don't believe that the multi trillion dollar MIC was defeated by OBL invading the most surveilled airspace on earth you know, statistically, that being killed on your bicycle by an errant automobile is far far far more likely to be the cause of your death than a terrorist attack.

Being a member of the profession at arms let me say first and foremost that I support the decisions and policies of the office of the President.

With regard to Afghanistan we as a military have been successful to accomplish removing the direct threats by conducting counterinsurgency operations such as the killing Osama bin Ladin and weakening the threat and the activity of Al Qaeda.

There will always be insurgent activity due to ideology providing an ever present threat to the US. But, we will remain vigilant as an Army as well as a superpower and protect our borders.

After two wars and two administrations the decision needed to be made to provide an "end date" to operations in an effort to refocus our efforts internally in the United States. Or economy is ready and will bounce back, jobs are slowly being created, and our military needs is going through a retrograde process. The future situation for both Iraq & Afghanistan is positive and optimistic because of U.S. involvement We are resilient and nation-builders. Our challenges are our strengths and we triumph over adversity every time.

The President did declare the mission in Iraq a success. The administration highlighted all of the tangible successes in this war. Of course, there are many hybrid threats to this conflict making the solution much more complex than past wars.

So, to answer Fareed's question the answer is yes. The war is going to soon be over and troops withdraw. There will be a remaining U.S. presence which is the same in any other country, post conflict. But, the role of the remaining troops on the ground will serve in other capacities for security and humanitarian needs.
This was and still remains a complex problem and will take a complex solution to fix.
Therefore, it is time to move forward with new strategy.

The war on terror becomes a war without end for couple reasons. Number one reason is the way continents portrait each other and the unthinkable spray of poverty in under-developed nations. Secondly is corruption, and corruption becomes the under-developed nation’s way of life and lastly is the lust for power.

This is sad but true america has lauched their own war as a torrist state to kill innocent people as Afghanistan has nothing to do with Osama as he was a CIA agent.
This is history a illegal and infidel country always starts with lies and ends with lies.
There is only one truth americans have killed over three million muslims only on charges which are not prooved even 9/11 is biggest lies of the 21th century. There is not a single logic in it and all the parameters shows that bombs were laid on every floor.
America is a lossed country with very bad future. Politicians have destroyed a wonderful land of dream through their wars and every american president is a war president not peace.
Defence industry is strong and they force the administration to wage a war and sell their ammunitions.

War on terror can never end because new terrorists are recruited everyday.
The US should come with a better strategy to regain the love lost on US.
Its very strange that some diplomats have to go through such trouble whereas they can visit China and India with their diplomatic passports without a need for visa.

There is a need of coming up with a better strategy otherwise the US will lose its love and attraction.

While I don't always agree with an ever increasing bureaucracy, the threat against the United States is real. I for one would rather continue to fight that threat overseas and protect our homeland than see bombings and terror attacks in the U.S. become common place. We must continue our diplomatic efforts to reduce the threat from terrorists all over the world but ignoring those threats will have deadly consequences.

End of this War will be destruction of USA, fulfilling all requirements of its destruction. The definition totally stands to crusade war. Ask definition from a Muslim, every one in Muslim Countries even children knows its definition, but you don't know. You will know its definition when history will come back to get you on charge, doesn't matter how long. But revenge always takes place. People in Muslim countries never never can forget killings of 3 million Muslims without justification in the hands of crusaders. Just wait….

Fareed, you don't understand....the Government looks for any excuse to spend the people's money...this is what drives a lot of businesses in the US. Wars- make the defense contractors wealthy, a home war on terrror gives a lot of people spying jobs, just like the war on drugs. Why? These businesses are looking for a sure thing- government spending. Own a prison, that's money in the bank as long as it's filled with criminals. Is anyone really going to argue that Homeland Security isn't keeping us safe? How can you put a price on that?

Well US will have to wage this war against Islamic terrorism and any other as long as Wahabi form of intolerant Islam exists and the brainwashing and spreading of intolerance and hatred through an army of Imams funded by Saudi and other rich nations continue. I don't see the source ending for the next 100 years unless Arabs and other muslim countries modernize and become moderate muslim countries like Turkey and some Central Asian countries. Complacency kills. Unfortunately, we will have to get complacent some day because living in fear is too taxing on our energy levels and our economy. The Middle East is complacent with their terrorists, which is why people get blown up all the time in markets, etc. They slowly realized they can't live in fear and must live their life normally, because if they cower in their house all day they will never get anything done. That will be America, getting blown up randomly in the streets unless we continue to attack them within their countries. We must continue the fight on these terrorists. Occupy Afghanistan!

But what do we do? Terrorism is a new kind of war, It is one where a single well trained individual can kill and maim thousands, it is unconventional because it utilizes technology that has become common place and accessible and because it requires one slip for an attack to hit a country. I'm no fan of a big bureaucracy but the department of homeland security should be prepared for a big downsize if things stabilize in the middle east. I believe it best to leave up to the professionals who can better analyze this than I can.

Trauma therapy is a new field in medication and drug therapy yet.. It is kind of said that human future is built up on generations of neglected and injured people. That seems like a dead end street to me. Each infected generation brings about another one. You just cannot control parental upbringing and directing. And of course MIS- teachings.
That is where alternative people come about. To plant a seed in Culdesac streets. To offer to crack up the waste that built up in the controvertial circulation.
But trauma therapy is similar. You learn to deal even if you can not beat it.
