Fareed's Take: U.S. has made war on terror a war without end

By Fareed Zakaria, CNN

Whatever you thought of President Obama's recent speech on Afghanistan, it is now increasingly clear that the United States is winding down its massive military commitments to the two wars of the last decade.

We are out of Iraq and we will soon be largely out of Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden is dead, and al Qaeda is a shadow of its former self. Threats remain but these are being handled using special forces and intelligence. So, finally, after a decade, we seem to be right-sizing the threat from terrorist groups.

Or are we?

While we will leave the battlefields of the greater Middle East, we are firmly committed to the war on terror at home. What do I mean by that? Well, look at the expansion of federal bureaucracies to tackle this war.

Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. government has created or reconfigured at least 263 organizations to tackle some aspect of the war on terror. Thirty-three new building complexes have been built for the intelligence bureaucracies alone, occupying 17 million square feet – the equivalent of 22 U.S. Capitols or three Pentagons. The largest bureaucracy after the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs is now the Department of Homeland Security, which has a workforce of 230,000 people.

The rise of this national security state has entailed a vast expansion in the government's powers that now touch every aspect of American life, even when seemingly unrelated to terrorism. Some 30,000 people, for example, are now employed exclusively to listen in on phone conversations and other communications within the United States.

In the past, the U.S. government has built up for wars, assumed emergency authority and sometimes abused that power, yet always demobilized after the war. But this is, of course, a war without end.

So we continue to stand in absurd airport lines. We continue to turn down the visa applications of hundreds of thousands of tourists, businessmen, artists and performers who simply want to visit America and spend money here, and become ambassadors of good will for this country. We continue to treat even those visitors who arrive with visas as hostile aliens - checking, searching and deporting people at will. We continue to place new procedures and rules to monitor everything that comes in and out of the country, making doing business in America less attractive and more burdensome than in most Western countries.

We don't look like people who have won a war. We look like scared, fearful, losers.

The U.S. Needs to continue to develop its oil and gas resources, build the Keystone XL pipeline to develop strategic energy independence, while we ward off the Islamo-Fascists within.

We also have to adopt VP Joe Biden's plan of raining down missles on terrorists from afar. As Biden said, there is no collateral damage when when you take out a village of Islamic fundamentalists.

Joe Biden is smarter than he thinks.

The U.S. Needs to reduce its gluttony for Oil and Gas and invest in Alternative Energy before it is too late. As for Joe Biden, the man is a moron, that's why he's the VP.

This was the real theme of the book 1984. Unending war designed to keep the power brokers in power. Most people only remember "Big Brother is watching", but that was secondary.

Year 1984 and The Brave New World are books that dwelt on what might happen in socialism if it is taken to the extreme. Thanks God Computer age came before humanity went to those limits.

Socialism refers to various theories of economic organization advocating public or direct worker ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources, and a society characterized by equal access to resources for all individuals with an egalitarian method of compensation. It is characterized by unequal distribution of wealth and compensation according to work done. Contrary to popular belief, socialism is not a political system; it is an economic system distinct from capitalism.

        (4) Following the advice of the Prophet (saws):
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that a man said to the Prophet (saws), “Advise me.” He said, “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet (saws) told him, “Do not become angry.”(Reported by al-Bukhari, Fath al-Baaree, 10/456)
According to another report, the man said: “I thought about what the Prophet (saws) said, and I realized that anger combines all kinds of evil.”(Musnad Ahmad, 5/373)
        (5) Do not become angry and Paradise will be yours (a saheeh hadeeth, see Saheeh al-Jaam‘, 7374. Ibn Hajr attributed it to al-Tabaraanee, see al-Fath 4/465):
Remembering what Allah has promised to the righteous (muttaqeen) who keep away from the causes of anger and struggle within themselves to control it, is one of the most effective ways of extinguishing the flames of anger. One of the ahaadeeth that describe the great reward for doing this is: “Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allah will fill his heart with contentment on the Day of Resurrection.”(Reported by al-Tabaraanee, 12/453, see also Sahih al-Jaami‘, 6518)
Another great reward is described in the Prophet’s (saws) words: “Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allah will call him before all of mankind on the Day of Resurrection, and will let him choose of the Hoor al-‘Ayn whoever he wants.”(Reported by Aboo Daawood, 4777, and others. It is classified as hasan in Sahih al-Jaami‘, 6518).

The GOP solution: Start a war with Iran (totally unfunded of course). Then send all the poor people to fight/die in the war while giving the rich people "no bid contracts". Thus killing two GOP birds with one stone!!! Then use Iran's oil to pay for the war. And when the war is over, Iran will sell us cheap oil!! Just like in Iraq!!!!!!!..................oh wait....never mind.

I believe that the threat has always been overstated. Most of the extra security we see today is not in response to an actual or even potential threat, it is done out of fear of having someting happen 'on my watch'. The silliness of hundreds of small towns and cities buying anti-terror HumVees and other expensive equipment is justs na example of hey, we don't need it but what the heck if we can have it, why not. Everytime someone leaves a shopping bag or a suitcase in an airport restroom the entier airport grinds to a halt. We need smart action not knee-jerk over-reaction.

"The largest bureaucracy after the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs is now the Department of Homeland Security, which has a workforce of 230,000 people."
You make it sound like they've built this new agency and increased government by 230,000 people. The vast majority of these people worked in the govt before DHS. The Coast Guard was under the Dept of Transportation before DHS. ICE and CBP were part of the Treasury Dept and Justice Dept. TSA was under the Dept of Transportation. The Secret Service was under the Treasury Dept. FEMA was its own agency. Other groups were under Agriculture, Energy, FBI, Defense, and GSA. DHS combined these groups in one Department to increase coordination and communication to try to prevent another 9/11.

        (6) Knowing the high status and advantages offered to those who control themselves:
The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “The strong man is not the one who can overpower others (in wrestling); rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.” (Reported by Ahmad, 2/236; the hadeeth is agreed upon) . The greater the anger, the higher the status of the one who controls himself. The Prophet (saws) said: “The strongest man is the one who, when he gets angry and his face reddens and his hackles rise, is able to defeat his anger.” (Reported by Imam Ahmad, 5/367, and classified as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 3859)
Anas reported that the Prophet (saws) passed by some people who were wrestling. He asked, “What is this?” They said: “So-and-so is the strongest, he can beat anybody.” The Prophet (saws) said, “Shall I not tell you who is even stronger then him? The man who, when he is mistreated by another, controls his anger, has defeated his own Shaytan and the Shaytan of the one who made him angry.”(Reported by al-Bazzaar, and Ibn Hajr said its isnaad is saheeh. Al-Fath, 10/519)
        (7) Following the Prophet’s (saws) example in the case of anger:
The Prophet (saws) is our leader and has set the highest example in this matter, as is recorded in a number of ahaadeeth. One of the most famous was reported by Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (saws), and he was wearing a Najraanee cloak with a rough collar. A Bedouin came and seized him roughly by the edge of his cloak, and I saw the marks left on his neck by the collar. Then the Bedouin ordered him to give him some of the wealth of Allaah that he had. The Prophet (saws) turned to him and smiled, then ordered that he should be given something.”(Agreed upon. Fath al-Baaree, 10/375)
Another way in which we can follow the example of the Prophet (saws) is by making our anger for the sake of Allah, when His rights are violated. This is the kind of anger which is praiseworthy. So the Prophet (saws) became angry when he was told about the imam who was putting people off the prayer by making it too long; when he saw a curtain with pictures of animate creatures in ‘Aa’ishah’s house; when Usaamah spoke to him about the Makhzoomee woman who had been convicted of theft, and he said “Do you seek to intervene concerning one of the punishments prescribed by Allah?”; when he was asked questions that he disliked, and so on. His anger was purely for the sake of Allah.

What a joke this article is. We needed to create this shield around the American people because of the threat coming to our shores. Kill or be killed. America had to adjust and we have. We are protecting our own. I don't mind standing in "aburd" lines at the airport, especially if it keeps me alive. I don't mind them denying VISA's if it makes it harder to slip in this country and kill. You miss the point and in doing so you put us all at greater risk!!! Thank goodness you are not in charge. your cowardice is sickening. The world is dangerous and there will always be people with unreasonable vendettas, but the reaction of the US has bred far more terrorists than a thousand Bin Ladens could have. Ben Franklin said that a people who would sacrifice liberty for a little security deserve neither. I think he was right, but I suppose to you he would be a terrorist sympathiser who should be careful with his words. Pathetic.

However much Mr. Fareed Zakaria may want to DELIBERATELY confuse US public opinion, the fact remains that:

    a) Firstly, NO SACRIFICE is too little to keep our nation safe.
    b) As the FBI, CIA have repeatedly stressed the fact that America has NOT seen any major attacks is NOT due to any reduction in resolve by Islamic terrorists BUT ONLY due to increased vigilance by the intelligence agencies. Can anyone imagine the consequences had the terrorists succeeded in their DIRTY BOMB plot, or the plot to SIMULTANEOUSLY bomb 8 trans-atlantic planes with liquid explosives!
    c) Check out this story "Intelligence agencies continue to keep America safe, stopping 51 terror plots since 9/11" on newsnet
    d) Sometime back Mr. Zakaria referred to European report which showed a significant reduction in Islamic terror acts, and said that the Europeans were UNNECESSARILY concerned about Islamic terror and suggested them to LOWER THIER GUARD. What Mr. Zakarai CONVENIENTLY FORGOT to mention was the number of attacks thwarted by the Europen intelligence agencies and the report itself cautioning Europeans NOT to take the eye off the ball from the threats from homegrown Islamic terror which reamied Europes #1 threat.

Mr. Zakaria's overt & covert effort to support his brethren continues!!!!!

The terrorists won on 9/11 because we allowed them to put the final nail in the coffin of our liberty. When we all - collectively - agreed to war without end, to the rise of the surveillance state, as a result of the attacks, the terrorists got what they most desired from us... terror. Permanent, expensive, draining, paralyzing terror.

The way to beat terror is not through spying and bombing and eternal war. The way to beat terror is to not be afraid. But I fear that America has lost the strength that would let us face terror with our humanity, compassion, and ideals intact.

The terrorists declared "war without end" on us. I guess you forgot about all the terrorist attacks prior to 9/11. Terrorism is their methodology, not their goal. Their goal is political change. When we give in to their demands is when we lose.

The way to beat the terrorists is to eliminate them before they strike. The way to beat the terrorists is to be so strong in our convictions that we will not give in to their demands that they realize their efforts are in vain. Like their fellow criminals, theirs is a crime of opportunity; they prey on those who are not vigilant.

The terrorists want us to feel exactly the way you do. They want us to let our guard down and feel compassion to their cause. THAT is how they achieve victory. Needless to say, that emboldens them to strike again for some other political cause. THAT is war without end: constantly capitulating to the terrorists.

        8) Knowing that resisting anger is one of the signs of righteousness (taqwaa):
The righteous (al-muttaqoon) are those praised by Allah in the Qur'an and by His Messenger (saws). Paradise as wide as heaven and earth has been prepared for them. One of their characteristics is that they (interpretation of the meaning) “spend (in Allah's Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, [they] repress anger, and [they] pardon men; verily, Allah loves al-muhsinoon (the good-doers).” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:134]
These are the ones whose good character and beautiful attributes and deeds Allaah has mentioned, and whom people admire and want to emulate. One of their characteristics is that (interpretation of the meaning) “. . . when they are angry, they forgive.” [al-Shooraa 42:47]
        (9) Listening to reminders:
Anger is a part of human nature, and people vary in their anger. It may be difficult for a man not to get angry, but sincere people will remember Allah when they are reminded, and they will not overstep the mark. Some examples follow:
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man sought permission to speak to 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him), then he said: “O son of al-Khattaab, you are not giving us much and you are not judging fairly between us.” ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was so angry that he was about to attack the man, but al-Hurr ibn Qays, who was one of those present, said: “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, Allah said to His Prophet (saws) (interpretation of the meaning): ‘Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish’ [al-A‘raaf 7:199]. This man is one of the foolish.” By Allah, ‘Umar could go no further after al-Hurr had recited this aayah to him, and he was a man who was careful to adhere to the Book of Allah.(Reported by al-Bukhari, al-Fath, 4/304).
This is how the Muslim should be. The evil munaafiq (hypocrite) was not like this when he was told the hadeeth of the Prophet (saws) and one of the Companions said to him, “Seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan.” He said to the one who reminded him, “Do you think I am crazy? Go away!”(Reported by al-Bukhari, al-Fath, 1/465). We seek refuge with Allah from failure.

The negative effects of anger are many; in short they cause damage to one’s own self and to others. The angry person may utter words of slander and obscenity, he may attack others (physically) in an uncontrolled manner, even to the point of killing. The following story contains a valuable lesson:
‘Ilqimah ibn Waa’il reported that his father (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: “I was sitting with the Prophet (saws) when a man came to him leading another man by a rope. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this man killed my brother.’ The Messenger of Allah (saws) asked him, ‘Did you kill him?’ He said, ‘Yes, I killed him.’ He asked, ‘How did you kill him?’ He said, ‘He and I were hitting a tree to make the leaves fall, for animal feed, and he slandered me, so I struck him on the side of the head with an axe, and killed him.’ . . .” (Reported by Muslim, 1307, edited by al-Baaqi).
Anger could lead to less than killing, such as wounding and breaking bones. If the one who caused the anger runs away, the angry person turns his anger in on himself, so he may tear his clothes, or strike his cheeks, or have a fit, or fall unconscious, or he may break dishes and plates, or break furniture.
In the worst cases, anger results in social disasters and the breaking of family ties, i.e., divorce. Ask many of those who divorced their wives, and they will tell you: it was in a moment of anger. This divorce results in misery for the children, regret and frustration, a hard and difficult life, all as a result of anger. If they had remembered Allah, come to their senses, restrained their anger and sought refuge with Allah, none of this would have happened. Going against the Shariah only results in loss.
The damage to health that results from anger can only be described by doctors, such as thrombosis, high blood pressure, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat) and hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breathing), which can lead to fatal heart attacks, diabetes, etc. We ask Allah for good health.

As statistics show while a vast majority of Muslims are indeed peaceful and law abiding, the FBI & CIA knowstoo well that this SILENT MAJORITY is also not helping in exposing the black sheep hiding amongst them, as it became abundantly clear during the Rep.Peter King's Congressional review on homegrown terror, and hence the need for enhanced vigilance!

Unfortunately this SILENT/SYMPATHETIC behaviour is NOT only limited to the common American Muslim, but also the much pampered, highly educated ones like Mr. Zakaria!

Just read ANY of his articles on terror!

we have mega-mega military, no other country even comes close to our military spending, we have massive defense infrastructure and are truly superior military might and Americans still believe a guy hiding in caves orchestrated 911?
i think what we lack is intelligence to see that 911 was cooked up by Mossad+Likud+ Israel-Firsters and our own to get a free license to kill and attack any Arab/Muslim country in name of self-defense. Why? So that nobody dares speak up against Israel/US hegemony.

Dear Fareed, tell our Jewish Israeli friends to stop this nonsense of scaring Americans blaming every thing on terrorism. It is the Israeli Jewish Americans who want US to fight endless wars for their Eratz Israel. Nothing else.

Some 30,000 people, for example, are now employed exclusively to listen in on phone conversations and other communications within the United States.

Nor Hitler's Germany, neither Stalin's USSR had that many people employed in this capacity, just in America.....21st century...

Fareed I think war on terror should never cease, because that's what the terrorists want so that they can strike again in any part of the world, war on terror should be permanent because the muslim fundamentalists, jihads, are never going to change as long as the earth exists.

Wrong. Stupid Muslims started the war. They always start wars because they don't understand how to compromise with anyone else. They insist on everyone becoming Muslim. This, in spite of Muslim countries being the most backwards, uneducated and unbalanced societies. And it's easy to spot an ignorant Muslim since they try to equate Judaism, a monotheistic religion, with the mutli-diety religion of the Hindu's. There is no connection except in the mind of the ignorant hate-filled Muslims.

Before the days of easy International Aviation the U.S. was insulated by our distance from the goings on in Europe and Asia where terrorists live next door, Machine Gun armed Special Forces troops openly patrol the airport, and civil liberties (by our definition) are almost non-existent. Now the Old World's ills have followed us to the New World so naturally other protections are necessary and people who were so free before whine about the new restrictions to keep them safe. Grow Up, its a dangerous World.

War on Terror is fabrication by the war industry for an ongoing profits for future thousands of years. We have always fought the terrorists even before the war on terror. There was always terror in the world and we have always fought it. This is a term created by the war profiteers.
