Same-sex marriage around the world

President Barack Obama's announcement that he now supports same-sex marriage has set off a new round of debate in the U.S. over the issue. His support comes on the heels of North Carolina voting to implement a state constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

But where around the world is same-sex marriage legal, where is legislation likely to happen next and and where is it criminalized?

The first same-sex couples walked down the aisle in the Netherlands in 2001. Since then, almost a dozen countries have followed in passing laws allowing same-sex marriages and domestic partnerships, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, Belgium and Spain. Nearly 20 other countries offer some rights to same-sex couples but stop short of marriage – including France, Germany and the UK.

After becoming the first country to legalize same-sex unions in 1989, Denmark is close to doing the same for same-sex marriages. And Nepal, a country that only legalized same sex unions in 2008, has appointed a committee to develop laws on same-sex marriages.

More: Campaigners push for marriage equality worldwide

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said he supports their legalization in the UK, where authorities are currently consulting on the issue, having permitted civil partnerships since 2005.

Australia is one of many countries around the world where same-sex couples are not permitted to legally marry. A bill that calls for the legalization of gay marriage was submitted to parliament but is not getting much support, especially from the country's leader. Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who has long opposed gay marriage, made it clear Thursday that her mind hadn't changed in light of Obama's announcement and she would not support the bill.

And in a number of places, homosexuality – let alone same-sex marriage – is considered illegal.

According to a report released in May 2011 by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, same-sex relations are still criminalized in 76 countries, and in five of those countries the death penalty can be applied (Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Mauritania and Sudan).

Here's the full list of where same-sex marriage is legal (and year the law passed):
Argentina – 2010
Belgium – 2003
Brazil – 2011
Canada – 2005
Iceland – 2010
Netherlands – 2001
Norway – 2008
Portugal – 2010
South Africa – 2006
Spain – 2005
Sweden – 2009

What's your take? How is the U.S. debate on the issue different or the same as other parts of the world? Submit an iReport or share your comments below.

I am against marriage to start from. Marriage is only good for governmant proceedures and legislations concerning rights and finance and off course the status of the children. I personally only got married with my boyfrient of many years only because he wished to live in another country and marriage was the only way for me to get a visa to join him in the country he lived in. I do not think a legal process is necessary for two life-time mates to seal their promise or prove their love. Gender of the spouses should not make any difference in such commitment; both mentally and legally.

You're right. All marriage and cohabitation do is screw up a perfectly good relationship.

Unions must be legitimized by the government because it is the responsibility of the government to determine (through the courts) the disposition of property in the (increasingly inevitable) breakup.

The OP siad NOTHING about UNIIONS. You are on a DIFFERENT subject. Marriage is NOT a civil union. Marriage is a religious union between man, woman and God. A civil union is a between human, human, and Government. They are seperate.

Hey David, When my wife and I got married it was between me, my wife and the Judge who performed the ceremony. Last I checked the Judge did not take her orders from the Pope or some other religions person. When I went to the courthouse to get my pieces of paper to make it legal, it was called a 'Marriage Certificate' not a 'Union Certificate'.

When you will you bigots crawl in to the 21st century and realize marriage is ceremony of love and partnership between two PEOPLE, non exclusive to how that person is.

        Hey David,
You should have told me earlier. God was not at my marriage ... I did not invite him. I hope the poor bast..d did not feel left out. My marriage was strictly between my wife and I ... with the judge playing facilitator and referee. Perhaps God could have come in and played host for the reception ... that fuc..r should pay for something if he wants to be invited.
Bottom line: I don't want YOUR GOD telling me what to do with my marriage. I have my own God and my mother telling me that already, thank you. Actually, my God does not give a damn which gender I marry ... so long as I live by true, core values of faith – aka humanitarian values – of honesty, integrity, justice, caring, equality, generosity, commitment to others in need, love for others, ... may be a couple more.
Please feel free to invite your god to YOUR marriage ... he does not have to crash mine on your invitation.

Its all a ploy by the Diamond industry. 2 months salary? Screw that. If that is before taxes its even more rediculous.

Considering that buying...or having...or wearing a diamond is *not* a requirement for getting married, I'd suggest that it's actually just the whole "diamond engagement ring" thing that's the ploy by the diamond industry, not marriage itself. (And, if course, if you can't afford to buy a diamond, then don't buy a diamond! You're a grownup, aren't you???)

The government should stay out of families and matters of faith. Period. With all the laws we have passed and money that has been used to bring about the change, everything is now far worse than it ever has been before. We got more brats, drug abuse, and criminals out there than ever before. Most marriages end in divorce, most families are single parents. Faith and family should never be decided by public agreement.

Faith should stay out of other peoples lives too. It is absurd for one faith to be so adamently against marriage. It is none of their business.

I agree the government has no place in the bedroom or in maters of relationship. There is an argument that unions lead to more productivity and a reduced burden on the state with respect to support.

gnp, you are incorrect in understanding of Lev. 25:44. For one, you are not an Israelite that came out of bondage from Egypt. This was a law given only to those that were. 2. It was only intended to those nations that surrounded the Israelite that were enemies of God and His nation and that were the Israelites were not to take bondsman among their own. 3. Slave/bondsman, in this context, does not have the same meaning as we understand it from early American history, this was to those that were bonded under by either debt or crimes that they committed.

The Bible was NOT written by God. It was written by man, and is full of contridictions. It has been debated and rewritten/translated more than any other peice of writing ever produced. So excuse me if I do not believe and follow everything it says. It is outdated and Human-kind deserves a better model.

        May 14, 2012 at 3:34 am |
      • Bethany

The bible bans touching or eating pork. Leviticus 11:8
The bible bans divorce Mark 10:8 & 10:9
If you do divorce it is considered adultery. Mark 10:11-12
The bible bans shellfish. Leviticus 11:10
The bible bans polyester or fabric blends from being worn. Leviticus 19:19

The bible states that women should not have nice haircuts or wear pearls and gold. Timothy 2:9
A man who has had his testicles crushed or removed in any way (including disease) shall never join the assembly of the lord. Deuteronomy 23:1

So whenever you throw a book in someone’s face and ask them to live by it and do as it says...read it and do it yourself first.

. It is our government's job to see that all of the citizen's of our nation have EQUAL rights. If that means that people in love want to be married. It is their right and our government's job to protect this right.

        DY 4:39

Uuh, problem. Leviticus is also where the "man shall not lie with man" stuff is located. Are you trying to make the point that indeed this only applied to the Israelites? If so then, Christianity should have no problem with a person being gay unless he is an Israelite freed from bondage from Egypt, correct? If this is not correct, then you can't make this same case for slavery. No picking and choosing!

Also, it appears that you would have no problem with us, today, making slaves/bondsman out of indigent people? In other words grabbing the guy with the cardboard sign and making him work as a slave to pay off any debts he incurred during his decent into indigence? Morally speaking, if it's not OK today then it wasn't OK then either. Making someone a slave because they cannot pay debts is just plain wrong, then and today. The bible also says it's OK to sell your daughter into slavery to pay debts. Is this OK with you also since this was 'nice' slavery? All you are doing is trying to cover the evil deeds depicted in your 'good' book.

I just heard from God last night. He tells me your god is out of date. He has not written anything in 2000 years ... so he's in hiding in a cave. So God asked to write in the "Book of Tom" ... please see chap.1 verse 1: "Marry whoever the heck you want. For those that do wish to restrict marriage, let them impose it upon themselves and those who willing agree with them."
So, I am inclined to listen to my God rather than your god (case used this way on purpose – to show I do not care about what you believe – just as I would not force you to believe as I believe).

Marriage is important especially for immigration reasons. If you have to change countries of residence (because of a job, for example), and you're not married to your life-partner, that makes things veeery difficult. Because that `special someone' does play a special role in reality in your life, that `specialness' will have to be reflected in law in certain very important situations in order to be just. That's why its so great that gay marriage is gaining more and more acceptance - they are finally getting the rights that every human being deserves.

Civil marriage has nothing to do with love and never did. It is about legal rights and the distribution of resources. In that light, for the government to discriminate against one group or another is wrong in every way and should be illegal.
This has no effect on, nor should be the concern of religions, as they can assign whatever value or significance (in a spiritual sense) to marriage that they want, and can discriminate against whomever they want, as a religious marriage is not legal without the civil component anyway.

France lost a larger percentage of their population in World war 2 than the US did and a larger percentage than the UK did. Canada lost a larger percentage of their population than the US did. France and the UK each had more people die in World war 2 than America did. The US has never faced what any of the European countries faced in world war 1 or world war 2 In both wars were came in late and lost relatively few people.
When the US faces some of the same dangers and privations they have reason to ralk big, till then I suspect you have no idea what you are talking about.

Hold on. Don't hate on the US for WW2. The Europeans started the whole thing, and then begged us for help. And we helped; food, fuel, weapons, clothes, and then, our sons and brothers. And when it was over, we loaned you BILLIONS of dollars so you could rebuild your countries. Then, dismissed the loans; you didn't have to repay a single dime. I agree JFK57 is a d-bag, imposing his values on others, but do not say the USA didn't do enough during WW2.

And as far as gay marriage is concerned, it's akin to the sufferage debate. Remember, women being allowed to vote in elections. The bible says that there is a man's world and there is a woman's world. Men stay in their world and women stay in theirs; they do not cross. That is God's law, in the bible. To allow women to vote would destroy the foundation of the country, ruin everything. WELL, almost 100 years later, has it? Has giving women voting rights destroyed the country? Oops, guess not. Today, no one really understands why people had an issue with women voting; what was the big deal? Gay marriage=same thing. It will become law, eventually, and 100 years from now my grandchildren's children will ask thir parents "what was everyone so concerned about?" and they will say, "I don't know. I don't get it either."
Sorry JFK and Tony T, you guys are simply on the wrong side of history. But we forgive you; that's what open-minded people do; what good-hearted people do; what god-fearing CHRISTIANS do. ;~)

In the infamous words of Monty Python "you're just making it up as you go along".

Do yourself a favor.. get off this board and go read a real history book.

The US wouldn't even be a country without the support of the French during our revolution, which later led the French people to revolt due to the economic crisis that was caused partly by France funding our war.

Study your history before you make ugly American comments like that.

Gay marriage is something only good can come out of. The only oppositions are bigotry and religion. The religion argument is bogus as one person's religion does not apply to other people.

JFK, but the "God " of the Bible didn't ordain one man and one woman. He ordained polygamy as well. There is no mention of people of the same gender being forbidden the right to marry. On the other hand it is forbidden to wear clothing made of two different fabrics, to eat shellfish, and to urinate against the wall. IT is perfectly acceptable to not only own slaves but break up their family units and sell your daughters into slavery. When wearing cotton undewear and a wool shirt are an abomination just like being gay is or eating pork, I don't take abominations very seriously. How do you guys pick anad choose which abominations you keep and which ones you ignore?

I am for gay marriage. However, I hope you will be as vocal once gay marriage is the law of the land and some gay activists with an ax to grind sue churches for discrimination when they will not perform them. And if you do not think that will happen in an effort to bankrupt churches for once having had the gaul to opppose this based on faith, you have not been watching.

        May 13, 2012 at 7:41 am |
      • Chris

Ben, Although I do believe that gay marriage should be legalized, I do not believe that the government has the power to force a church to take on a practice they do not believe in. If gays want to be married in a church, then they need to do what King James did when he wanted a divorce. Make a new one...
Churches should not force their opinion on others. Likewise, others should not force their opinion on churches.

That' because unlike Canada, we have many fanantical religious factions which I like to call "the christian taliban" that wants to impose their religious dogmas on all of society. It's about power, control, and forcing others to adopt the same life of fear of their mythological heaven and hell. They are so far removed from the teachings of Christ that the word "Christian" has become a term for someone who is ignorant, ill-informed, and prejudice. If they could just love God and love their neighbor as thyself, they'd probably have an epiphany about how ludicrious their stance on the Gay issue really is. It's said to realize they know nothing about how their bible was put together centuries after Jesus' cruxificion, where the writings in it came from. and the historical context of the times when the stories were put together, inserted, omitted and plagerized.

      • Angela Birch

Voice of truth you are wrong it made perfect sense. If you believe what is written in the Bible there is the great commandment Love the lord thy god with all thy heart, soul and mind and love thy neighbor as thyself. All other is commentary. That means if you are a Chritian you must love every person as much as you love yourself, doesn't matter their religion, their race, their gender or their orientation. The commandment is that you must love your neighbor ever bit as much as you love yourself, with no exceptions. Since that is the rule that God stated was the important one. It seems I have never met a Christian who lives up to God commandment, so I don't see that any Chritian that is not living up to God's commandment has any reason to whine about someone else not living up to God's commandment. Remember what Jesus said you have to do if you want to get into heaven. The first is believe ( which is relatively easy) the second is sell ALL you have and give the money to the poor and follow him. Don't see much of that either. I know a lot of supposed Christians who own homes, bank accounts cars and have no intention of selling them and giving the money to the poor. You just can't take Christian rules seriously if the Christians don't bother.

      Louise,
It won't have any detrimental effects on our society either. Unfortunately, while many Americans are decent individuals, we'll always have bully's. Puritans came to this country for religious freedom...and then pushed their beliefs and fears onto everyone they could. We've had our share of it in other forms...Nazism, McCarthyism, KKK...and so on. We have a great deal of fanatics, with power, pushing their own agendas and finding enough weak minds to do the dirty work. Prejudice and fear are never clear sighted and we have a great deal of it here in the US. This country was founded on some amazing ideals...and none of them were based on religion. Without the religious argument, there is simply NO argument to prevent marriages between gay couples. I live within 100 miles from the US/Canadian border...I've seen first hand that your country welcomes with open arms people of diverse backgrounds and diverse beliefs and that there is a great deal more acceptance and tolerance and equality than in the US. I love my own country dearly (which is why I haven't left and followed my Canadian husband to BC) however I think what Canadians value is more in line with what Thomas Jefferson believed our country was capable of.

When any group throws it weight on others, it is nothing more than a cult like Mafia. If your against it, then don't have a gay marriage. Common Sense needs to be Preached to the Sheep, not politics. Every dictionary I've been able to find defines it as a "union of one man and woman for life. Maybe you should read one. Before governments tried to make money off of it, it has been a religious service for thousands of years. If gay partners want the same legal rights that should be no problem or issue. Co-opting a religious service is bound to create animosity.

My wife and I got married, not because we felt we had to (legally or culturally), but as a celebration of our love for each other. Of course, it does make it easier in the many countries we have lived in and visited – but that's only the legal part. In our opinion marriage should always be a private choice between two individuals, that ONLY concerns those two individuals. Others (in legislation or otherwise) who feel they need to outlaw or bind people (straight or gay) to their rules on how they wish to celebrate their relationship are no better than people who discriminate (and legislate) based on race, religion, nationality or any other arbitrary characteristic.

Marriage had hardly ever been about love, religion, or values for most of history until around the time of the Industrial Revolution. Procreation and love were achieved mostly out of wedlock, and marriages were almost exclusively out of economic or political motivations. Yes, you're right, why break that century-old tradition now and start marrying for love?

It would be interesting to see a program on marriage from a worldwide historical perspective. Many of the comments I've heard recently lean toward not changing the way it has always been, but we have so little information about "always".

In any event much of the legal/political argument against broadening the definition of marriage seems to be about the loss of tax revenue from the change in single filers to married-filing jointly. There are surely other financial considerations that would touch all of us.

RZ marriage is a legal contract with rights and obligations for both parties This the only beings that can enter into it are adult human beings that can intellectually form an intent to enter into the contract, understand the obligations of the contract. That lets out geography, pets and plants. IT does allow polygamy, and bigamy as well as single gender marriages. If all parties are adultss and fully informed who cares.

@ Angela; Yes ! And herein lies the crux of the problem. Marriage was carried over from church/bible/religion, or what hav you. And it's a mess. Family law and it's far reaching tentacles...still needs a lot of work too, especially depending on your country. Marriage contract ? No problem, if you want a contract, WHO CARES ? Drawone up and sign the darn thing just like any others. But my point is that existing laws and government benefits related to marriage need to be eliminated. We need to be able to say "Who gives a rat's butt if you marry a chipmunk to a turtle ? So what ?!? It does not affect me as a citizen or a tax payer, and it does not break any other laws or cause a problem. Sign a contract with a goddess on Venus for all we care ! Just keep the rest of us out of it !"

On the US coins, it says: " In God We Trust." How this be true when the marital arrangement that God established between a man and a woman is no longer considered as the only marriage arrangement ? At Genesis 2:24, after Adam was enthralled by Eve, God then said: "That is why a man will leave his father and his mother and he must stick to his wife and they must become one flesh."

Some 4000 years later, Jesus reaffirmed this marital arrangement, quoting from Genesis 2:24 and telling the Pharisees: "Did you not read that he who created them from [the] beginning made them male and female and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and will stick to his wife, and the two will be one flesh’? So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has yoked together let no man put apart.”(Matt 19:4-6)

Hence, is the US trusting in God by turning it's back on the Bible and the marital arrangement that our Creator, Jehovah God established in the Garden of Eden ? Could it still consider itself as "Christian", since Jesus himself spoke of only one marital union, between a male and a female ?

This is no different than Jews in Jeremiah's day saying: "We are wise, and the law of Jehovah is with us” (Jer 8:8) despite the people "is unfaithful with an enduring unfaithfulness...have taken hold of trickiness...refusing to turn back".(Jer 8:5) As a result, Jeremiah says that "they have rejected the very word of Jehovah and what wisdom do they have ? "(Jer 8:9) Many who profess Christianity are rejecting the Bible in favor of a more liberal view.

I believe marriage was created by a big, invisible man who lives up in the sky. I believe he knows EVERYthing and that he loves me so much that he will make me burn for eternity if I look at my neighbor's boobs, which he created. I know these things are true because people have been telling me so ever since I was a little kid.

Funny that the "polls" say that this is such a "close" issue. However, ho.mose.xual "marriage" has failed 31 out of 31 times when the voice of We The People is heard in the voting booth. Only when a rogue judiciary legislates from the bench or a socialist state government silences the voice of democracy do we see this ultimate travesty of The G.ay Agenda.

The only role for government is establishing the rules of property and inheritance, and that should be done 100% via civil union, including hetero unions. If you are non-religious, that's all you need. If you want to have your civil union done in a church or by a minister and call it a marriage, fine. The union would be civil, and the marriage would meet the rules of the respective church. If your church doesn't allow gay unions, then find another church, or become atheist.

Marrage is based on religion. Its one thing for politicians to remove God from government (and look how that is working out). But government should not try to re-define Gods word. "Everything is OK now, everyone can do whatever they want and be responsible for nothing". lets all be politically correct............ Gods plan has not changed. God gave us all the freedom to choose. Please spend more time thinking about whats in your heart instead of what feels good today.

Tony T, Marriage might be based on religion for you, but it is not for many others. Commitment does not have to have a religious or government component. It is between 2 people. However, today marriage is also about legal rights and equity in benefits and assets. Also, even in the good ole USA you don't have to look back very far to see arranged marriages and young women sold by their families, so the history of marriage is full of blight anyway.

I suspect many of the anti-gay marriage people, especially the females, who quote the bible would be the first to protest if all of the Old and New Testament mandates were enforced on them. You all go ahead and enjoy being stoned to death for minute issues.
Also all this marriage beginning in the bible...no. There are much older non-Judeo Christian religions that had marriage ceremonies. It didn't all start at the bible.

And if you raise your kids away from God anything can happen to them. There are consequences to the choices each of us make. Yes, real consequences that can affect us and our kids. It is interesting and sad to witness the total lack of historical facts when it comes to marriage, the evolution of social customs, the change in cultural thoughts that have occurred in the last and current centuries. The Bible can be a source of comfort for those in spiritual need. However, unless these good Christians want to become Amish or Hasidic, they will never follow all of the laws of the Bible. The latter has been used to support slavery, the supression of women, child abuse, and wars. Until people learn to love, unconditionally, everyone with all their heart, they will never understand the Divine or the true meaning of Jesus' teachings. When "rules" prevent us from being loving, we cease to be in touch with the Divine, God, Lord; however, you do or not do not envision the spirit that I believe is in all of us.

Not much of a Christian are you? Thinking your God needs you direction to do something, pretty flimsey God there if he needs one of his creations to direct him. God demands that every Christian loves their neighbor every bit as much as they love themselves. Sure doesn't sound like you much love your neighbor, but that is OK that was God telling you what to do. You don't seem to go there. Your God is standing around waiting for you to direct his actions. What is your God, some sort of wind up toy? You wind him up and send him to smite people?

        Romans 1:18-32
        King James Version (KJV)
        18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

        28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Why can't people just be free to choose and if they burn in hell then they burn in hell? What is so STUPID about all the people that furiously and tiredlessly want to ban gay marriage and unions is that they are Christians. I was raised a Christian and I was always taught you make your own choices and then, in the "Judgement Day" you will either be rewarded or punished for what you did on this earth. Why are people trying to FORCE others to not make a choice? You are taking free will away from the population. SO WHAT IF THEY ARE GAY? If what you say of god going to punish the gays is true, let them pay for it in the afterife. JUST DON'T TAKE THEIR FREEDOM TO CHOOSE HOW THEY WANT TO LIFE THEIR LIFE IN THIS WORLD!

Very true and well said, yet this battle is worth fighting because of the moral and cultural implications that this brings, we have already seen the deterioation of freedom of speech, whereas folks who speak their beliefs against gay marriage are losing status, position, and reputation. This is just one of the problems. Onthe level of answering for your own decisions, yah, they have the right to choose their own path, and accept the consequences for that. But I would want to fight for a morally upright and free society for my children to live in.

Marlot, society isn't free if they are not free to make choices. IT is not a free society if they are free to do as you tell them. Your children will grow up and make their own decisions. They might not agree with your opinion they can make decisions that differ from youea because they are free. You have the right to your opinion because you are free. Freedom is not spread by denying it to others.

I'm not against GLBT people from marrying. They should be afforded the same social and economic benefits that
supposedly "straight" or non-gay people derive from "marriage". My question is what's to prevent two straight people
of the same gender from marrying (a marriage of convenience) in order to scam the "system" (tax dodges, testimony
in criminal prosecutions, inheritance and estate manipulations, etc.)? Seems it could produce a mind boggling bag of
    legalistic worms...

The Bible provides a framework for clean living that if followed will without any doubt will lead to a more satisfying and peaceful life than if one ignored or never had the chance to read it. If you believe in the Trinity and that the Bible is the inspired word of God and truly live by its' recommendations, you cannot lose. Even if we Christians are dead wrong about our beliefs when we get to the end of the road, we have lived a good life. If we are right then, well..... The real problem is that many Christians are hypocrites. You cannot breed hatred and really be a Christian, It is an oxy-moron. I love other people regardless of political or spiritual beliefs, If I try to get you to think differently than you do it is because I want you to be able to experience the same benefits I have since I became Christian. And if you say "no thank you" I would still love you as a fellow human created by God. NO body is perfect and God does not expect that from us. But you having nothing to lose by thinking outside the box. What if we are right?

Please define "good life". As a Catholic, I believe in God. As an American, I believe that all of us have the right to live in a world where religion is not shoved in our faces. What works for you and your personal belief system does not work for everyone. This country was founded on the basis of religious freedom. Whatever happened to the Declaration of Independence, which clearly states, that "ALL men are created equal." This does not just apply to right winged judgmental God fearing folk. This applies to all men (and women), gay or straight, black or white, etc. You cannot pick and choose what you want America to be. We're a free country where everyone's values are valid. I'm am so sick of people telling me what God to believe in. It's your choice if you want to believe in the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man as your personal savior. Get over yourself!

The Christian concern is not gay marriage. It's about God being removed from day to day life and the fact the government is now trying to re-define his word. The men who established our country put God into everything (look at your money, pledge of allegence, how every branch of government swears into office, "God and country", when you take the witness stand, ect). But they did separate church and state so no church organization, like the Catholic Church would rule over us. Look at the affect of removing God: Education in the US sucks, huge government debt, unemployment, and look at gas prices because the American dollar is loosing value. All the feel good / do what you want choices government and companies are making have consequences. Christians feel we have strayed far enough from God. We need to head back in the other direction.

The people who established our country did not put God on the money or in the pledge. Both those things had God added in the 1950s when were were busy being hysterical about communism. We had national debt and unemployment long before prayer was removed from the schools.Gas prices have nothing to do with the loss of value of the American dollar. Gas prices are higher in other countries where the dollar isn't a factor. The prices of oil and thus gasoline are based on many factors from speculation to the increasing scarsity of oil and the difficulty and expense of obtaining it, I am afraid you have no sense of either history or economics, were you home schooled??

        Matthew 19:3-6
        King James Version (KJV)
3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Now that marriage has become irrelevant as a culturally recognized set of behavior norms in the United States, why not mandate individual power of attorney choices for each U.S. citizen? The main reason why non-religious people want to be "married" is because it provides legal protection of their "spouse" to make end of life choices as well as receive beneficiary rights. This includes divorce and legally protected separation rights as well. Once each citizen declares their own P.O.A. decisions, it won't matter if you are married, blood related, or just friends.

Argentina just passed a law that allows people to 'self-identify' as to their gender.

And all this time I thought it was biological. Gender change procedures no longer needed. All you have to do is to say that you're a girl or a boy and, 'bam.' In the eyes of Argentinian civil law, you are.

President Obama has caused me to rethink the issue of gay marriage. The foundation of marriage is really a strong mutual commtment by two people based on deep and abiding love. If that foundation exists then the matter of gender choice really becomes a non-issue, be it a choice of soemone of the same gender or a choice of someone of the opposie gender. By focussing on gender as the foundational issue we have been putting the cart before the horse...

To all those who endeavor to control the hearts, minds, bodies and souls of others – your reign is coming to an end. All your spasmodic attempts recently to put legislation in place that denies or prohibits anything not in line with your dogma is just the death throes of a belief system that knows it's losing its influence on people. Well, power is an illusion and people are waking up such that individual sovereignty and self-empowerment will soon be the norm. You can gracefully make the transition as a citizen of the world or throw a tantrum like a child whose toy has been taken from them. The choice is yours.

I think it's pretty obvious that being gay is perfectly natural, for a segment of our population. This is something normal for our species. Also natural seems to be the alarm and hatred displayed by some hetero people – it disguises by way of religion and other arguments that this is "against nature" (again, it clearly is not, just look around). Many bad things like this hatred of others come somewhat naturally also – it is through evolution of our culture and becoming less the neanderthal (forgive me, neanderthals) and more the evolved, peaceful people who will get past this visceral reaction to something that is simply different but perfectly natural for some. It is so obvious when you take a step back. Clearly these people who argue it is against nature, or the bible, or GOD (as if you know what God is for or against when it comes to other people, come on) who are the real problems we have to evolve our way out of. With time we will. It just takes some effort to shed those who are holding the rest of our society back. We just have to be patient with these "children" and help them grow as best as we can.

I liked the following comment thread:

    - JFK57 (previously said that God says marriage is only between a man and a woman)
I know what God says about marriage. Tell me where He endorses owning male and female slaves........
    - gnp
    Leviticus 25:44

After that, all anyone heard were crickets... ROFL. Plus, JFK57 was also inaccurate in their statement, the Bible contains many examples of Marriage being between one man and one woman, and her sister, or several other women. I'm not claiming that people should not believe the Bible if they choose to... Im simply saying that not even Christians can agree on what exactly the Bible says, if they could, we wouldn't have denominations... everyone would believe exactly the same thing. Our laws cannot be based on one groups interpretation of a religious text, that is what the Taliban did, and look where it got their society...

Noon: lunch, usually subway or pasta. 1 to 3 is usually rehearsals or instrumental lessons with professors, and by 5 I am done for the day. Go home to boyfriend and dog, watch Netflix with dinner, and talk about my day. 9 either walk the dog or workout, then shower and relax. Well, boyfriend and I do sleep n the same bed – so that's perverse, just like how any other two people sharing a bed is perverse. So you got me there I'm a raging pervert waiting to destroy society. Well, my dog sleeps next to me at night, but I am guessing you are using a slippery slope, gay>Pedophile/beastiality. Two consenting, like-minded adults having a relationship is not the same as victimizing a child, or associating with creatures that do no have the ability to even be like-minded in the first place. There is great variation within human societies what are 'acceptable' relationships some of which would be unacceptable to us in the USA. The point is, there is no slippery slope, and men and women are what it takes to procreate, but human relationships and bonds are about much more than that. We need to keep in mind that we are more complex than baby makers and sperm donors.

If we allow all civil unions for all who want a contractual agreement, remove the marriage tax benefit from the tax rates (no govt support for marrage) and let churches marry those who want and believe in Gods blessing – just like getting baptized, then what would we argue about? Our higher taxes? Now that is worth a good discussion on who should pay more in these days of bank bailouts with no accountability. Leave God, and his marrage out of what is a government problem.

      18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

      28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Brain damaged people should not be allowed to wreck marriage. There is a reason why we have been doing it this way for the last 6,000 years. A reason that apparently, some do not understand and others, do not want to understand.

There is clearly a hidden agenda in all of this.

It is not about fairness at all. In a free country such as the USA, you can do whatever you wish in your own bedroom.

Over the last 6000 years marriage has changed a lot... There used to be lots of multiple marriage partners. Ask Mitt, his ancestors practiced polygamy. Marriage used to be arranged in most situations, without any thought of love. Most of us wouldn't stand for that today. So don't tell me "we've been doing it this way for 6000 years because we haven't!

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

    21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Why is the right wing, ordinarily a strong supporter of individual liberty, so intent on squashing the liberty of gay men and lesbian women to marry their partners. It's shamefully hypocritical.

It is obvious that you are an uneducated, 50 something year old male, probably living in a rural part of the country who is very out of touch with reality considering that your reasoning has absolutely zero foundation backing your claim.

What Civil Rights? I don't think getting married is a civil right when you have Civil Unions already. They are basically the same thing with different names. One indicates a relationship based on tradition, logic, and religion (marriage) and one represents a group of people fighting against nature and sanity (gay civil unions). Still same thing legally though.

Usually, I do not ever get involved in posts such as these.Honestly I read them, get towards the middle and get so frustrated I 'x' out of cnn.com. Also, I am one of those 'horrible gay people that is ruining family customs and America'. Well I would just like to say a few things. First, I grew up in a 'traditional' family full of love and 'family customs' that are considered normal to most of you. My parents are both a man and a woman so it was never in their plans or intentions to have a gay child. And I'll be honest, it was not easy for myself to accept. I am a Christian and have been since I was a small child. I believe in my Father and consider myself a Soldier of Christ. But when I came out, I really struggled with my faith. How in the world could my Father LET me be gay. I prayed and prayed for him to take it away, I dated 'normally' and I tried to ignore my feelings. But in the end, I learned after many yrs of searching, God does NOT care. The message He gives us is that he loves us, no matter what. And if being gay is a sin, as many of you have pointed out by your interpretation, then let us not forget God has stated that he loves you regardless. There is no sin too big to make him stop loving you. You could reject Him your entire life and accept him in the last day of your life and He will forgive you. Thats how it works. And people, I know I will receive several passages in response and thats totally fine, but I will say that now that I have accepted who God MADE me, I have never felt his love envelope me more. I could throw passages out there about all the things the bible states about other things you shouldnt do but we somehow ignore and actually do. But I feel that most people in America make a special acceptance for the Gay rules. Second, I do not believe being Gay is a choice. Absolutely no way. Why in the world would I choose a lifestyle that treats me like a second-class citizen? Why would I spend most of my career as a soldier in the military having to hide my partner in the shadows. Forget about being able to kiss your partner good-bye before you get on a plane before a 15 month long deployment before the repeal of DADT. Forget about all those simple things a 'normal' marriage takes for granted. Why in the world would I CHOOSE that?? Thirdly, As a Soldier who defends America I feel I deserve the right to get married. Lets get real, the repeal of DADT was AMAZING. And it seems like it improved immensely. And many thought it would break down the barriers of discipline within days of its repeal. Well guess what, the military is still a fighting force that is doing its job well over in Afghanistan. But why can't I have same rights as 'normal' couples when I have raised my right hand in a time of war and vowed to protect it. I love this country-thats why I run into terror with its flag on my right shoulder. What makes our country great is that its truly the land of the free. And provides rights many around the world dream of. Let's not make those who live here, dream of a right that even our founding fathers understood.
When people ask my opinion on gay marriage, Its sometimes hard to articulate my views. Its hard to make someone see and agree on your side of things, thats just how debates work. But I struggle with putting up such a big fight over something that is not a big deal in my eyes. There are so many other issues we could focus efforts on.
And for those of you who dont agree with gay marriage, put yourself in the 'gay, horrible peoples' shoes. Think about how you would not be married to the love of your life that you have prolly been with for 10-20 yrs. Of course to you, you want to marry your partner as a celebration of love, but for some reason, you and 'your kind' dont get to. Its like being told as a kid that you aren't tall enough to ride the 'big kid' ride with your friends bc you're just a lil shorter than the average. How those beautiful children you have, though a gift, would be yet another fight of a right. Can you believe that? A fight to have kids bt you and your love when you know you can provide them a great life. Think about a simple act of holding hands in the mall while shopping will get you the most evil look from others around you. Its a look that will make you feel like the most unwanted human on this world.
Have we really taken this many steps back? Or have we just been to scared to take those steps foward?

Come to Canada. We'll treat you like a first-class citizen that you can be proud of and still retain your pride and loyalty to America. Canada is very loyal to the US just as the US is great to Canada. How dare do these people's opinions hijack their religion and put words in God and Jesus's mouth. Republicans only care about oil and don't mind destroying this planet, which looks to be the greatest creation for millions of lightyears. Do you think he did this so you can all pretend you are God and you can destroy one of his greatest creations. Did he do that so you can make people like D10 feel bad. Keep your opinions to yourself. D10, have faith that these people who are forcing their judgement on you will be punished at the gates for putting words in God's and Jesus's mouth. Jesus himself was against the church. It is all a croc. Forget these people and know that if you act in good with your heart that is all he could have ever asked.

gay attraction is not the way God made you, it is a desire you have, i may have a strong desire to sleep with another woman, but i cannot because i am married, desires do not need to be acted upon.

I do have some attraction to men, but am also married, love my wife and never would consider breaking my vows and have no interest in pursuing that route ever. My desire to do the right thing and live well far outweigh any selfish desire, religion aside. I believe many people turn to a gay liefstyle out of despair and lack of hope and discipline in their lives. I know this is true because I am very content with my life and at peace with the road I have taken even though I could easily have chosen to go the other way. We DO make choices in our lives every day. Mine is to end up with Jesus in heaven. Having said that I hate no one who made the choice to live a gay existence. I do feel sorry for them though... God loves all his children, but eternal happiness awaits those who follow his example.

Matt, you spoke well until you said, eternal happiness awaits those who follow his example. i hope you did not mean that. Eternal happiness awaits those who do not trust their own works, but trust that their sins have been paid wholly by the blood of Jesus who died on the cross in our place, and rose again that we might rise again with him. Jesus is not an example, but is the payment. If we do not recognise sin as being sinful then we make a mockery of God's plan of salvation. Gay attraction is sinful.

I think that people has the RIGHT TO BE FREE.

Freedom means the liberty to choose:

    1) your religion
    2) your opinion
    3) the person who you decided to love
    4) your job

If you believe that GOD hates everybody that isn´t of your church, that´s ok. But don´t force others that don´t believe in it to suffer because of your prejudices and belief.
