Will Israel's 'king' seek peace deal?

By Fareed Zakaria, CNN

While incumbent politicians around the world are struggling to hold on, one is thriving so much so that he's been called a king.

I'm talking about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who last week struck a deal to bring one of his main rivals, the Kadima party, into his government. Netanyahu's coalition now commands more than three-quarters of the Knesset — the largest parliamentary majority in Israeli history.

Netanyahu faces no plausible rival as prime minister. So he has an unusual, and perhaps unique, opportunity to use his new power to secure Israel's future.

When pushed on the Palestinian issue, Netanyahu has often cited the constraints of his coalition to explain why he had not taken bolder steps toward resolution. In the past, he seemed to like being restrained: He refused to form a national unity government in 1996 with Shimon Peres, and he refused again in 2009 with Tzipi Livni.

But now he has enough broad support — a big enough base with many moderates — that he could move toward a peace settlement without endangering his hold on power.

What should Netanyahu do next? Read Fareed’s Washington Post column to see what he thinks.

Am a regular admiring and appreciative viewer of GPS. However, the report on Israel and book recommendation only told part of the story, thus were not completely accurate . I have not seen anything in the Israeli online press calling Netanyahu 'king of Israel' – that seems an exaggeration. No one wants peace more than myself (dual Israel-US citizen) or majority Israelis. However, contrary to GPS view, with regular rocket attacks across neighboring borders targeting civilians and constant threat of much worse necessitating reinforced rooms being built in private homes across the country, main candidates in Egyptian elections talking about Israel as their enemy and negating their Israel peace treaty, Iran proxy and Israeli hating Hizbollah powerful in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza still dedicated to Israel's destruction and Iran repeatedly supporting that in talk and financing the latter two, Israel is still under existential threat. Fareed mentioned the weakness of the Palestinian Authority, which in light of all above is a very serious factor in whether any peace agreement would be able to hold, and even more that same authority's government school textbooks have maps showing a single Palestine with no Israel, they have named streets and squares after terrorists who have killed many Israeli citizens and their government supported television often vilifies Israel and glorifies martyrdom by attacking Israel. None of this was mentioned in this report, nor was the controversy raging regarding Peter Beinart's book, which represents an important point of view but is not the whole story either. Since Israel is in actual danger, my request is to be more careful about the realistic implications of your reporting on it. People without all the information could easily think Israel is secure and simply doesn't want peace, rather than understanding the complexities of the situation and Israeli fears. I only hope that in spite of the difficulties peace can and will come, but please do not jeopardize Israel in your reporting. Thank you.

    • Existential threats,

much like the threat Palestine has endured, are what Israelis have sown in the Middle East. It's sad that Israelis have had to build safe rooms to protect themselves from those they've practically dispossessed, imprisoned, and dehumanized.

I'm a Lebanese born American citizen, and I want peace for the region; but it's truly sad how Israelis have deceived themselves into believing they are victims, and, as such, pseudo-victims, can never be trusted to understand what existential threats mean. Israelis are victims of their own fear and power-politics. It's true to the laws of nature that the Middle East body has rejected a foreign and toxic transplant.

The Lebanese man who commented. I wonder who tried to overthrow Syria, Jordan and your country? The PLO. Israel has been attacked by Arabs simply for being Jewish, no other reason, and the Israelis treat arabs as good or better than any arab country. Admit it, Israel is a peace seeking country for which they have no partner for peace. The Arabs lose every war they fight with Israel, because Israel is right, by devine intervention, they are the chosen people, and the Arabs are barbarians who seek to destroy Israel simply for being a Jewish state. It's time for arabs to take responsibility for their own loses, and make peace. We in the west are sick of your excuses. Israel is our great ally; you are not!

Israel does not have to start any wars. Israel has over 200 nuclear weapons to destroy the whole of middle east. They have the US military might given to them for free. They are just killing Palestinians and their women and children in scores and keeping them in dire needs and disgraced as animals. They are treated as third class citizens to serve the upper class(Jews). That is worse then a war. Degrading, humiliating and slowly wiping the Palestinian population and a race. Jews know this but will never admit their cruelty and in humane treatment. That is worst then Apartheid.

The problem with Arabs is that they claim what's theirs is theirs. and what's others' is also theirs. If Jews are a transplant in their only ancestral home ever, what are you doing in the US?

Thinker23 is an Israeli state-paid propagandist, he spends the entire day on CNN forums to attack those that post the truth and rightfully criticize Israel. There are a bunch of them, they post the same lies, canned responses, badmouth, namecall, threaten.. usual Israeli methods to silence everyone that doesn't serve to their interests. They want to fool as many people as possible and continue the status-quo. United States can't help USPS but sends billions of US taxpayers' money every year to these warmongers in addition to military and other aid. Americans had nothing to do with middle east but got involved in wars because of Israel, to eliminate their enemies at no charge to them. In this process, Americans lost enormous amount of money, thousands of soldiers.. gained enemies.. lost credibility throughout the world.. Why? Because Israelis bully the US politicians in an ongoing basis through their lobbies and threaten them with their votes. They pump lies and propaganda into the US public in a daily basis. The US economy is going down thanks t Israel. With an ally like them, US needs no enemies, but it gains enemies as well thanks to Israel. Israel is not your friend, they don't care about the welfare of Americans. Your true enemy is not Arabs, it's Israelis. Wake up America!

In East Asia, the Chinese and Koreans had also had their holocausts under the NIPPONS, but they put the past behind them, look forward and focus on their countries' development, instead of holding Tokyo to account. Today the three nations hardly speak about their troubled past. Of course Israel is in a different context – geopolitically.

What the Israelis have sown in the Middle East is prosperity, something that the Arab States fear most, because the nature of the societies cannot provide their people. Culturally, it is a misogynist desert, void of tolerance, honesty, intellectual discourse and civility. The delusional thinking. Is that suicide bombers deserve anything more than universal condemnation will keep Palestinians in poverty and misery for their entire lives. That is what they count on to keep the hate alive. If they ever succeed in destroying Israel, they will have themselves to blame for their lives, and that will be a sad, overwhelming reality. Their movement is devoid of logic.

Thinker23 Israel started the 1967 war period. There is sufficient evidence that the Israel civilian politicians recognized the bluster of Egypt and the other countries as simply that: bluster. The Israeli military however was so intent on war and the securing of more land that they essentially controlled the politics in Israel and certainly had more real power than the civllians so they simply used that bluster as an excuse for invasion. There are many books, some written by Israelis' that bear this out.

Jews have had a continual presence in the holy land for almost 6000 years. It was the Arab Nations that fought a war in 1948 seeking to destroy the Jewish population. They lost. Now if you could answer me this question, what about all the Arab Jews that were kicked out of their countries, lost their land and all their material possessions? What has gone on in the Middle East has been a war. And with war there are always bad guys on every side.

Stealing is in the eye of the beholder. Most Jews believe Arabs stole the land of the Jews, and turned it into a desert; Thinking in these terms doesn't advance a solution, either way. If the Palestinians who weren't even a people before the 1960s now want to have a state of their own, let them have. But only if that doesn't make Israel more vulnerable to attacks on its population and threats to its edxistence.

Vivian Deutsch 's comment is in place. While Fareed Zakaria is correct in pointing out Netanyahu's strength and ability to move more boldly toward a Peace agreement he somewhat underplays the difficulties from the other side. The other side is weak and divided, with the Hamas part totally and openly calling for the destruction of Israel. Abbas and the Palestinian Authority speak in one way to the world and in another way to their own people. They also have set impossible preconditions for talks. Logically and rationally the Palestinians should move toward Peace now, but this is given their internal divisions and the fact that Extremism always rules in their midst very unlikely to do so.

How much can you trust Netanyahu, Fareed? Is he as sincere as he wants to portray himself? Some world leaders hadn't had a high opinion of him. Netanyahu had apparently complained in the past he couldn't take "bolder steps toward resolution", due to "the constraints of his coalition" in the peace settlement. It might just have been an excuse. Why was he so outspoken and brazen when it came to other issues? He has no guts to go against the grain and avoids to defy his supporters, as he depends on their votes to stay in power.

Well, now that he has a broader coalition he can try ...but he'll almost certainly fail, because this conflict IS NOT really about territory. Muslims haven't yet accepted self determination for the Jewish people, especially in land that was once ruled by Islam.

Fapmaster-Zionism has little to do with religion. It's mostly a secular movement. Most Jews, who are secular, believe that the land belongs to the Jewish people as a matter of history, not because Yahwe says so.

WHAT in the world Fareed?? reallly the guy Netanyahu is a war criminal, and u are saying that Israel has a lot to be threaten from the Palestinians ??? The Israel has the worlds most powerful weapons it does not give them the right to cage in millions of Palestinians in a jailed wall thousands of Palestinians go through check points to go to work and the r harmless they have NO weapons, why don't u ever say the death total from both sides and will see the real threat to our world. Come on, over 8,000 Palestinians are in jail for no reason, children and women, homes and trees r destructed every day by the IDF. Please, I watch CNN because I thought it is a two sided media, and now ur glorifying a war criminal, I can't trust any media source, u a network for to show what is going on with humans around the world, show more about the middle east educate the world what is the "indigenous" Arab/Islam people what r they like?? I really want to thank u for ur effort CNN, and understand even though there is freedom of speech u still decide to go with to report on things u think will get ratings instead that is sad, it's no wonder why Al-jazeera is illegal in the US to be on cable?. Peace, and thank u for all the reporters who work so hard to bring the truth. The 90's was ur era CNN u had great reporting. I sound very repeatable but, I really hope for world peace and I wish we all see our similarities and not our differences, I know we all agree : )

I think it was too bad you had to sarcastically refer to Bibi as a King, simply because he is overwhelming popular in the only democracy in the middle east. He is a terrific leader and respected by a huge majority. He is also willing to engage the the Palestinians on the peace process, although they still do not recognize Israel or her right to exist.
As usual , they choose to only air their unending grievances rather than use the opportunity to engage in constructive debate.
the fact that they still do not mention Israel in their textbooks , and continue to teach their children hatred of Israel will continue to hold them down for generations. Enough already! Accept a small Jewish state in the midst of scores of arab states and get on with the business of modernizing your countries and helping your people.
A little of this emmis (truth in Hebrew) would do a great service to your readers and the Palestinian people
You are educated and articulate and have a forum in TIME- use it to allow the truth to shine through. Israelis are far from perfect, but Israeli arabs have better lives than most arabs in their own countries.

If the Palestinians WANTED to make peace with Israel they would ASK FOR PEACE NEGOTIATIONS long ago. On the other hand, as long as the Palestinians are willing the war to continue instead neither Netanyahu nor any other Israeli leader will be able to make peace with them for the simple reason the ONLY way to make peace UNILATERALLY is to beat the enemy hard enough until the enemy will ask (or rather BEG) for peace.

The only question any Israeli PM should ask himself is, will 'Peace' with Palestinians enhance Israel's security or decrease it? all the rest is details. Most Israelis are willing to give away the territories for enhanced security. The problem is that as long as the Iranian threat grows with Iran most probably getting the Bomb soon, any peace agreement with Palestinians may likely work against Israel's security, by allowing Iran to get it's missiles into the Wst Bank.

Reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians would be an extremely positive development for Israel because it would eliminate the most "convincing" anti-Israeli argument from its enemies. Today Arab and Iranian leaders tell their people that Israel is "oppressing" poor stateless Palestinians and "steals" their land. What would they say in case Palestinians would make peace with Israel? On the other hand there is no Palestinian leader or leaders ABLE AND WILLING to make peace with Israel on ANY conditions. Therefore, there is no "maybe" here. There will be no peace no matter what Israel will do until the majority of the Palestinians will realize that peace is better than war (or, alternatively, that war is worse than peace) and will demand their leaders to make peace with Israel.

Naive. Iran's rulers are vehemently anti Israeli because of their Jihadist, apocalyptic religious beliefs. Palestinians are just a pretext, peace or no peace.

      • Thinker23

A-Jad... Iranians rulers will not remain leaders too long in case the PEOPLE of Iran would not support them... and I doubt that they will be able to find a "pretext" convincing enough to send millions of Iranians to their death at war with Israel in case there will be peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

        May 14, 2012 at 7:24 pm |
      • A-Jad

Thinker, nobody in Iran cares much about Palestinians. Certainly not enough to get killed for them. But they will follow their Shi'a apocalyptic jihadist beliefs to death. The reason they seek to destroy Israel is almost purely their extremist version of Shi'a Islam. FYI it requires the death of many or all Jews for their version of Messiah (12th Imam) to 'return'. You can't underestimate the power of religious madness just because you may fall into the trap of some commentators presenting tham as 'rational.' They're only 'rational' within their apocalyptic madness.

Further, "Illegal" means "IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW" and as long as THERE IS NO LAW forbidding the Jews to live in the West Bank but allowing the Arabs to live there Jewish settlements will remain NO LESS LEGAL than Arab villages.

The simple fact is the Palestinians already have a higher standard of living than most Arabs in non oil producing countries. Even the Gazans live better than ordinary Egyptians. Hopefully peace between Israel and them will materialize sometime. It's a secondary issue for Israel, not of the existential kind, like the Iran problem.

Right now the opposite is true. If Obama hadn't been holding Israel because if his reelection considerations, Israel could blow Iran off the map. Matters will be different in 1-2 tears , after Iran gets the Bomb and probably drops it on Tel Aviv, causing its own total destruction in response. Sad. These countries shouldn't logically have any beef between them. But Islamists do not follow western logic.

He has killed innocent children several times with intent to kill and wipe out the Palestinians race. UN has resolutions against this criminals actions but US always protects his back end. He is no different then Bin laden. He is a bully and a war monger. He will never accept peace because his ultimate goal is to destroy and kill all the Palestinians.

God damm Israel and bad luck if they start another war. Israelis are responsible for the polarization of the world population and religious clash. They created it all to benefit from it, which is how they make Americans eliminate their enemies at no cost to them and get billions of dollars of US taxpayers' money as aid on top of the other military and other assistance every year. Americans always lose in this friendship, which means that Israel is not an ally. Israelis pumped so much lies and propaganda into US public on a daily basis, Americans are all brainwashed and think that their enemy is Arabs. It's only natural that when you unfairly and unconditionally support the violent state of the middle east, their enemies become your enemies. US should dump Israel as an ally and become neutral in the middle east affairs as soon as possible to recover, Americans lost enough money, soldiers, credibility, and gained enough enemies because of their so-called ally but actual enemy Israel. Wake up people!

Truth may hurt but it needs to be voiced. US public is subject to lies and propaganda by Israeli controlled politicians and media in an ongoing basis. They make Americans think that Arabs are their enemies and Israel is their ally, because it's their filthy method, they create polarization among world population and use religious clash to benefit from it. They make Americans eliminate the enemies they created, at no expense to them. Americans suffers the consequences in various ways, deeply. They they receive sympathy and billions of US taxpayers' money as aid every year on top, in addition to military and other aid and investments they force. They threaten US politicians in an ongoing basis through their lobbies and with their votes. Israel is the most violent nation that continuously violates international law, murders innocent people including children, bullies and threatens every nation and person that rightfully criticizes them. Any non-Israeli brainwashed individual that falls for the lies and propaganda needs to go through renovation and think clearly, it's hard but it needs to be done for the world to stop feeding the parasite/leech so that they come to terms with UN and the world. The entire world condemns the actions of Israel but the US because of the unethical politicians, which made US lose credibility in the world enormously since the 1990s. Wake up!

Israel is the most violent state in the entire world, they continually violate international law and bully other nations when they are rightfully criticizes. United States can't help USPS but sends billions of US taxpayers' money every year to the warmonger Israelis in addition to military and other aid. If the current status ends, the money and aid pouring from US will stop, so they do not want a solution to their artificial (self-created and fueled) problems. The US economy is going down thanks t Israel. With an ally like them, US needs no enemies, but it gains enemies as well thanks to Israel. Israel is not your friend, they don't care about the welfare of Americans. Your true enemy is not Arabs, it's Israelis. Wake up America!

95 percent of terrorism activity in the world. Of these twenty (Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Yemen, Iran, Uganda, Libya, Egypt, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Colombia, Algeria, Thailand, Philippines, Russia, Sudan, Iran, Burundi, India, Nigeria, and Israel) all but four of them (Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Colombia, and Burundi) involve Islamic terrorism. In terms of terrorism fatalities the top four nations (Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Somalia) accounted for 75 percent of the world total of terrorism related deaths. All of these were the result of Islamic radicalism, often directed at other Moslems and not just non-Moslems (“infidels”).

How many have the drones killed so far, any idea? What the terrorists kill is a drop in the ocean compared to the toll from hell-fire missiles and nuclear weapons.

There is a prophecy about it... Everybody knows about it... All Christians know what it means... Prophecy says that we dont know place and time, but when Israel appoints or calls somebody a king, thats the time when he will start the Final World War, Armagedon... I cannot believe it... And if we take into account the aggressiveness of zionizm and threats of war from everywhere everything seems possible... it doesnt look like a fary tales any more... I am scared that I live in this time... God save the earth and humans from such horrible future... I hope that we live in peaceful time and not at that time about which talks the prophecy....

Balfour sponsored the Aliens Act 1905 to restrict Jewish immigration into Britain. The aim of the 1917Balfour Declaration was to get the Jews to leave Britain and Europe and move to Palestine. His motives were anti-Jews rather than any sypmapthy for the Jews, and the only Jewish Member of the British Cabinet, at the time, Edwin Samuel Montagu wrote a Memo describing the Zionist idea as a "mischievous, evil idea", adding that Jews from Europe and Russia had nothing in common with the Jews of Palestine, other than sharing a religion. The whole memo can be read on the Jewish Virtual Library website.
How right he was and the proof is there before us. Sixty plus years of occupation, oppression and the degradation and dehumanization of the Palestinian people, Jews, Christians and Muslims.

The Israel-Palestine conflict can be summed up so simply it is remarkable that the media cannot (or will not) pick up on it:

The Palestinians and their governments do not accept the existence of Israel. Period. End of story.

Until this changes there will never be peace and any talks are entirely pointless.

Which country can you name would accept their lands being occupied and taken over by a people from all corners of Europe and Russia? Today, a Palestinian in the occupied territories cannot get his brother to return, whereas a Jew living in Vancouver can just pack his bags and go anytime. Injustice and open-air prisons will never bring peace. Your centuries of sufferings in Europe were no fault of the Palestinian people.

Who has the "right" of it is irrelevant to my point. Israel is willing to accept a Palestinian state, the Palestinians are not willing to accept Israel. As the path to peace calls for a two state solution, obviously the party that will not accept two states is the primary and overwhelming impediment to peace. The media likes to pretend otherwise, but we both know there is nothing Israel can do that will stop the conflict short of a mass exodus (which is not even remotely feasible or moral).

Rights are only irrelevant in an apartheid state, not one which claims to be a democracy. The whole world knows how much "rights" the Palestinians have. The Palestinians should only accept a one-state solution with equal rights for all, with no special status for Europe's and Russia's Jews.

Netanyahu I believe is himself a child of Polish immigrants. There are no Hitlers and no holocausts and Jews have wonderful, prosperous lives whether it be Palm Beach or Wall Street or Hollywood or Paris. Does it make sense to live in the middle east where the odd rocket kills a Jew and a hundred Palestinians are butchered by hell-fire missiles. And there is no end in sight.

Reading this gibberish really entertains me. First, if you disagree with Israel you seem to be an anti-Semite. Why is that? Why are you barred from disagreeing with how Israel conducts itself under the penalty of be called anti-semitic? Israel started the 1967 war and claimed it was due to a build up of Egyptian forces on it's borders. CLAIMED! BUT, it is still STARTING a war. Seems like they are using the same excuse now with Iran. All you Israel supporters still haven't justified why Israel expands settlements. Are the Palestinians just supposed to sit idly and watch? I wouldn't and I'm Italian. I'm not running to Italy to defend her neither did my parents during WWII. Jews, are you American or Israeli? You are destroying America by standing by Israel. They need to return the land taken in 1967 and stop all this warmongering. Remove your settlements and stop building concentration camps for Africans. You of all people should be against ethic cleansing. You want Israel to be free of African culture but didn't Germany want to be free of Jewish culture? You are wrong. Most of you are turning a blind eye to the truth just because you are Jewish.

The fact is that it as Egypt (and NOT Israel) who started the 1967 war by blocking the Tiran Strait. According to UN Resolution 3314 blockage of sea ports of another country is a bona fide act of aggression justifying the attacked state to use force in self defense. Further, in 1967 about 95% of Israeli oil came through the blocked port of Eilat meaning that Israel DID NOT HAVE A CHOICE but to remove the blockade. Still further, the fact that most of Egyptian molitary was concentrated along Israeli border preparing for a crashing offensive made it relatively easy for the Israelis to beat them. An army preparing for an offensive usually is not well prepared for a defensive and this is exactly what happened in 1867.

Robert, are you sure that Israel should RETURN all the land taken in 1867? You should realize that if it will happen the Palestinians will get NOTHING because these lads were taken from Jordan, Egypt and Syria. NOT from the Palestinians. Further, if you believe that there should be no Jewish settlements in the West Bank what about ARAB villages there? What (if not racism) makes you believe that the Arabs should have MORE rights than Jews? Finally, every 4th Israeli is an Arab but the number of Jews living in the Palestinian-controlled areas of the West Bank and Gaza is EXACTLY ZERO. Who is guilty of "ethnic cleansing", in your opinion?

I have to agree that your moniker describes you perfectly, "You Lie". I've stated that the number of Jews living in the PALESTINIAN-CONTROLLED AREAS OF WEST BANK AND GAZA WAS EXACTLY ZERO. There are no Jews in the PALESTINIAN-CONTROLLED AREAS. All Jewish settlements are located in the regions CONTROLLED BY ISRAEL.

        May 15, 2012 at 6:00 pm |
      • Robert

Again, Israel controlled is the key word here. Why are they "controlling" Palistinian land? AND, they are expanding the settlements. Please tell me you know this? Please tell me you read about the UN and their take on settlement expansion? Why do Jews deny they are doing wrong? So, Baruch Goldstein was right for what he did? Killing praying moslems? I understand Israel needs security but at what expense? Continue to harm innocent Palistinians? Israel will never have international support as long as the media prints what it see.

        May 15, 2012 at 6:20 pm |
      • Thinker23

Robert... Can you NAME the state Palestinian land belongs to? If you CAN NOT it means that Israel has at least as much right to control this land as anyone else. Further, it is PERFECTLY LEGAL for a state to control enemy territory DURING A WAR. Still further, THERE IS NO LAW forbidding Jews to live in the West Bank but allowing Arabs to live there. Finally ,can you NAME at least one UN Resolution that was violated by Israel but complied with by the Arabs? Thank you.

        May 15, 2012 at 6:50 pm |
      • Thinker23

Robert... Baruch Goldstein was A TERRORIST and a mass murderer and this is how he is being remembered in Israel. On the other hand, a terrorist and a mass murderer Yasser Arafat became the first Palestinian President. The terrorist organization Hamas received the majority of Palestinian votes. Something to think about, don't you agree?

        May 15, 2012 at 6:55 pm |
      • Robert

I can't name just one; Israel has ove 80 UN resolutions. Israel's settlements are illegal. They need to et out of Palestine and stay in Israel. Why can the Jewish terrorist, Netanyahu, expel hundreds of thousands of Africans on the premise of culture dilution? Can't he US do the same? Can Germany? France? Admit it, Israel is all about itself and what it can take from everyone else.

        May 16, 2012 at 6:41 am |
      • Thinker23

Robert... You can not name EVEN ONE UN Resolution that was violated by Israel but COMPLIED WITH by the Arabs. You see, if one side in a deal refuses to comply with its terms the other side is under no obligation to comply with it, either. Further, "illegal" means "IN VIOLATION OF A LAW". As long as THERE IS NO LAW forbidding Jews to live in the West Bank but allowing Arabs to live there Jewish settlements will be no less legal than Arab villages. Still further, ANY country can and should expel illegal immigrants. The US, for example, expels hundreds of thousands of them every year. Are you calling President Obama A TERRORIST because of that? and YES, so does Germany, France and most every other civilized state.

The only leader called King of Israel in modern history was Ariel Sharon. That's because he was a winner in war and a doer in peace. Netanyahu has much to prove in both fields. He must first bring the downfall of the Mullahs in Iran, then peace with Palestinians will be achievable. The pther way around won't work for Israel.

No one denies the holocaust. Finkelstein's 'Holocaust Industry' says it all. Uganda and Argentina and some place in Canada were all considered as a refuge for the Jews. Balfour who came up with the idea of a Jewish homeland on land which didn't belong to him was an ouright anti-Jew. He did it not out of any sympathy but to get rid of them. And the most vocal opponent of this Zionist plan was the only Jewish Member of the British Cabinet, Edwin Samuel Motagu, whose Memo can be read in detail on the Jewish Virtual Library website. I have copy of a letter he wrote to Lord Rothschild for the Bankers support in getting the Jews to agree to a place in Palestine, a British Mandate territory. The colonial bas**rd's legacy is what we see today and the thieving goes on at the hands of the 6 million escapees.
While crying over anti-Jews ( won't use the word semitic, because, Arabs and Palestinians are semitic, the Western Jews are not; they are white/caucasian ), you have no problem in using derogatory words for those whose lands you steal.

You use lies, which are worst than anything in a debate. E;g. Ashkenazi Jews "aren't semitic" is a red herring. DNA tests prove that Ashkenzi Jews are mostly of Israelite descent, with some infusion from Europe an, Slav and Khazar host populations. Sephardic and Eastern Jews are also mostly of Israelite descent some host population influences. If anyone doesn't historically belong in the subject country, it's "Palestinians" who are Arabs originating basically in Arabia. Most Israelis would nevertheless have no problem with "Palestinians" having their country in the West Bank, if that's what they want, provided that doesn't impair Israelis' security.

Well, genius, if you agree that Palestine was A BRITISH MANDATE TERRITORY why do you think that the land of Palestine belongs to the Arabs and not to the Brits, for example? Or to the Turks because it were the Ottoman Turks who ruled Palestine for 600 years prior to the Brits?

        May 15, 2012 at 6:07 pm |
      • Thinker23

Salmon... According to every dictionary, "Anti-Semitism" means "Hatred of Jews". Since you disagree with all of them can you explain WHO ARE PALESTINIANS? You may start from your statement about "Arabs AND Palestinians" implying that Palestinians are NOT Arabs. If so WHO ARE PALESTINIANS, in your opinion? By the way, if you're interested to know how a Semitic Jew who lived in Judea 2000 years ago looked like you may visit your local church. They'll gladly show you pictures of a Jew who was born in Bethlehem and spent his entire life in Nazareth, Jerusalem and other places in the area. Good luck!

My re ply is being censored. Sorry, the Jews of Palestine share their ethnicity with the Christian and Muslim Palestinians. The western Jews are white/caucasian, NOT middle eastern. The Icelandic Jew and the Palestinian Jew are not related to each other or to Ibrahim of Iraq ( Mesopotamia, ). It is absurd and dishonest to suggest that the Palestinian does not belong there, but the Russian Jew does. Your own Professor of History at Tel Aviv University, Shlomo Sand in his book "The Invention of the Jewish People" disproves everything you say. Is he too a self-hating Jew? All Christians do not belong to Nazareth; neither do all Muslims belong to Arabia or Jews belong to the middle East.

Salmon, you may or may not be educated about your own people, but you obviously know nothing about Jews. Read my post on DNA below. Jews were expelled from the subject land by the Romans in 135 AD. Maybe a few remained, which explains some small traces of Jewish DNA in Palestinians. In any event, all that is old history that shouldn't be a determining factor in today's resolution efforts. All Jews who've emigrated to the land from Europe certainly had infinitely more rights and moral reasons to do so (to save their lives) than Arabs and other Muslims have a right to emigrate to Western Europe (to improve their lives.) But with you, it's always the same. What's your is yours, and what's others' is also yours. You Arabs should have 10% of the land surface of planet Earth and still be allowed to immigrate to Europe and the US, while the Jews who had nothing on Earth, no country at all , shouldn't be allowed to immigrate to that little piece of land that you've turned into a desert and practically abandoned. Talk about hypocrisy and warped logic.

Salmon, Shlomo Sand and yourself are refuted by scientific data. Almost all Jews in the world are related and have a common origin, in the subject land. The DNA evidence is overwhelming on this, but of course Arabs aren't much interested in real evidence. They tell themselves these imaginary tales and end up believing their own imaginary inventions. Palestinian DNA is mostly Arab, originating from the Arabian Peninsula. It does show some traces of Israelite origin. Much less than Jews. But, hey, if the Palestinians claim to originate from the Land of Israel, they should simply revert to their Jewish ancestry, complete with Hebrew language and Jewish religion. Problem solved.

All Jews in the world are related by DNA, does that go for the Christians, Muslims and Buddhists too? What an intricate web we weave, when the intention is to decieve. So your own Israeli Jewish Professor of History is wrong and you are right. Now if on humanitarian grounds you say the Jews should have a place where they feel safe; it may sound reasonable, after centuries of western anti-Jewishness. But then you don't move to another part of the world and start slaughtering the locals. You have failed to live in peace. And, in fact Jews are much safer in Europe and North America than they are in Israel. Ironically Jews are safer in Iran, than they are in Israel.

DNA is defined as a nucleic acid that carries the genetic information in the cell and is capable of self-replication and synthesis of RNA. DNA consists of two long chains of nucleotides twisted into a double helix and joined by hydrogen bonds between the complementary bases adenine and thymine or cytosine and guanine. The sequence of nucleotides determines individual hereditary characteristics.

What does Monatgu have to do with the (non) issue you've started, of whether European Jews are really Jews? here's a conclusion of an expert from the US National Academy of Science "Despite their long-term residence in different countries and isolation from one another, most Jewish populations were not significantly different from one another at the genetic level." The reasons for that are in Jewish culture of inter marriage. (As to Ethiopian Jews, they're indeed an excetpion that proves the rule. As to them being 'racially abused' that funny coming from a Muslim, an Iron age religion that calls Christians and Jews 'apes and swine' and kills other non-believers.

The Arab/Muslim world had a very substantial part in the holocaust, as it supported it in words and action (Google Mufti of Jerusalem) and practically forced the British to close Palestine to Jewish immigration- a crime against humanity that doomed millions of European Jews to death. This behavior toward the Jews was in line with the barbaric treatment of Jews in the lands of Islam, throughout the sorry relations that began with Muhammad's massacre of Jews in Medina and their total ethnic cleansing from Arabia.

And we mustn't forget the Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie who thought Hitler was like 'Joan of Arc' and of course Mr Blair,Canadian Director of Immgration who when asked how many Jews should be allowed to immigrate into Canada, said "None is too many" and of course the Americans and Canadians who refused entry to ships carrying fleeing Jews. They were all inspired by the Mufti as were the French, the Italians and other Europeans.

You are a bunch of fools. Thinker telling me that his dictionary ( published by "successful" jews ) says antisemitism means hatred of Jews. Really??? As if I didn't know that. The point I was making is that the word's ethnic connotation has been hijacked as western Jews are not of semitic race, but white/caucasians.
How more dishonest can you guys be, to transfer the blame for almost a millenium of hatred of Jews in the West with major pogroms, inquisitions, holocausts on to the Arabs/Muslims, knowing fully well that that history was not replicated in the Muslim world. And that says it all, when you have blinkers on.
The reason I wanted you to refer to Montagu's memo was to make the point that much of what I say is supported by Jews, including Israeli Jews ( who you cannot accuse of being anti-semitic ). I have a letter with me from an Israeli Jew, a Professor at a British University confirming that Balfour's declaration for a Jewish homeland was based more on his desire to get the Jews out of Europe rather than any sympathy for them. Anti-semitism was deeply rooted throughout the West for hundreds of years. I know of Jews who weren't allowed to stay in hotels because they were Jews.
When you forget your own history, you are not going to learn any lessons from it.
It is total intellectual dishonesty to claim that all Jews are one ethnic group, unless of course the aim is to justify occupying the lands in the middle east, based on some mythology.
And as for Madoff. Be honest, how many of your people are or were involved in the world's financial crisis; so the greed is not confined to one lone guy.
One final point re culture, it is possible that I know far more about Shakespeare and Beethoven and Michaelangelo and the classics than you guys. And I wear jeans, have a big Mac etc. etc. So what's your point? Muslim immigrants to the West don't demolish people's houses and occupy their lands. They work hard and live peaceful, law abiding lives. You guys started your invasion of the middle east on a fabricated lie, a biblical myth and then introduced terrorism thru' the Stern and Irgun terrorists. Sure there were Jews living in Palestine for thousands of years but I can assure they were no relation of yours, the Russian Jew or the Chinese Jew. They were all local population.

Salmon... If you're curious how a Semitic Jew living in Judea 2000 years ago looked like visit your local chirch. They'll gladly show you pictures of a Jew who was boen in Bethlehem 2012 years ago and lived in Nazareth, Jerusalem and other places in the area. You'll be amazed to discover that HE DID NOT LOOK LIKE AN ARAB AT ALL.
Further, I have not seen anyone blaming Arabs/Muslims for hundreds of years of anti-Semitism. This is, apparently, your own original invention, Salmon.
Still further, the common definition of an ethnic group is "a group of people having common culture, language, history and smoetimes religion". Being an ethnic group DOES NOT justify "occupying the lands in the Middle East" or anywhere else. This being said, however, Palestinians ARE NOT an ethnic group and neither you nor anyone else have shown anything proving that the land of Palestine belongs to them.
Regarding Madoff... Be honest, how many of YOUR people are involved in terrorism? Are you willing to accept the responsibility for it? If not then don't blame the Jews for Madoff.
Regarding "invasion to the Middle East... Can you NAME AN EXISTING STATE the land of Palestine belongs to? IN return I'll name the states in the West Muslims are immigrating into. Deal?

One other point, the young Palestinian kids that you kill everyday had nothing to do with your torturous history in Europe. It is very likely that their ancestors were Jews or Christians before they converted to Islam. They are the real semites. But too much concentration of these in a minority does raise questions. I think anyone would ask that question. Doesn't mean you are anti-anyone really.
It also begs the question why people who are a) very smart and b) been the target of victimisation throughout history, be so callous to the suffering of others and recognise that there can be no peace without justice for all.

Netanyahu didn't refuse to join a coalition with Tzipi Livni's Kadima. It was Livni who refused to join Likud, while Netanyahu was practically begging her to join so he wouldn't be so beholden to the smaller parties. She left him no choice. Very similar to how the Palestininans have refused to talk peace with Israel, despite Israel practially begging them to sit and talk. If they weren't so intransigent, the Palestinians would get much of what they wanted.

Good thing you were hiding under that bi t h Ann Frank's bed while the Gestapo were pumping away. Too traumatized for any rational discussion. Don't forget to visit the holocaust memorial before shooting at some semite Palestinian kids speaking that funny semitic language.

Yeah you bet. That's what happens when you totally ignore the points made and start the usual Islam bashing knowing full well tha t there is no way I am going to attack the Torah or the Bible which Muslims regard as holy books and revere all the prophets of the Bible. Although I can assure you there is a thousand times more violence in the Bible ( Deutronomy ) than there is in the Quran.
And you even show total disrespect for a Auschwitz survivor or what he had to say.
Unfortunately you guys are so power drunk now what with America's backing and hundreds of nuclear warheads that racism, occupation, war, nothing matters. To hell with world opoinion.
As for Thinker he is really a child; going by the pictures he see in church. Maybe he should go to churches in Ethiopia where Jesus ( or whatever his real name was ) is depicted as brown. The guy and his Mom are shown as Scandinavian looking in the West, because the day they show him and his Mom as middle eastern looking, the Christian world will go back to paganism. He spoke the language Aramaic, still spoken in parts of Syria and he was born what 15 kilometres from the Gaza strip? So go on dreaming Thinker ( who doesn't think )

You can attack the Torah to your heart's content. We don't restrict criticism of anything, including religious texts. I honestly believe that Islam is the source of all troubles in the wworld, starting with those who practice it. Most other non Muslims in the world believe that. If you need to styfle free speech, stay in the Lands of Islam. I ask you for the 5th time, why do you swamp Western Countries, when you have all these lands from Persia to the Atlantic to yourselves?

That's what Hitler, the Europeans and most Americans and Canadians said about the Jews, for a thousand years that "they were a source of all trouble". Honestly. You can do the research. In fact I believe Blair, the Immigration boss in Canada in the 30's had this to say:In a letter to a supporter of his anti-Jewish immigration policies, Blair wrote, “I suggested recently to three Jewish gentlemen with whom I am well acquainted, but it might be a very good thing if they would call a conference and have a day of humiliation and prayer, which might profitably be extended for a week or more, where they would honestly try to answer the question of why they are so unpopular almost everywhere...I often think that instead of persecution it would be far better if we more often told them frankly why many of them are unpopular. If they would divest themselves of certain of their habits I am sure they could be just as popular in Canada as our Scandinavian friends are"

Salmon... The oldest known pictures of Jesus were made by Romans and Bizantines during the 3rd and 4th Century AD. There were many thousands of Jews from Judea there at the time for the creators of those pictures to make the Jew named Jesus to look like a Jew and NOT like an Arab, an African or a European. I would suggest you to GET A CLUE of what you're talking about in the future so you will not make a fool of yourself at every opportunity.

Crucifixion was the preferred method for middle eastern terrorists in those days. Now he would have been killed by a hell-fire missile by the Americans/Israelis. No one would then have known what Thinker's Scandinavian looking, English speaking Jesus would have looked like. First they killed him then 3 centuries later they started worshipping him and of course painted pictures of him and his middle eastern mother to look like Northern Italians.

The sorry relations of Jews with Islam started with Muhammad decapitating all post puberty Jews of the Jewish tribe of Banu Qoraise, in the Suk of Medina, May 627. After that he forced the Jews of Khaibar into a status of dhimmis, between Muslim women and dogs. He promised them they could stay in Arabia but his second successor Omar nevertheless chased them all out of Arabia. Talk about ethnic cleansing. This is the historical fact. Your myths about the wonderful life of Jews in Islam, is just that. Myth. They lived sometime better and sometimes worse than the Jews of Christianity. The difference was like the difference between Cholera and Black Death. Jews needed a land of their own. They returned to their homeland. You can't accept it because you want to take everything and give nothing. You are barbarians. But there's still hope for you, because it's only in your religion, not your biology. One day you'll evolve to a higher level and out of the iron age. In the meantime, we'll defend ourselves from you rabid fanaticism.

Deep Salmon. Very deep thoughts. Summing you up, you hate blond and blue eyed people. You can swamp their lands but nobody , blond. dark or purple, can ever live in any land you've ever touched. As I said, you belong in the Iron Age. So be it, but leave the Jews alone, or stop whining when you lose genocidal wars you start against them.

tiny extract of Montagu's memo to the British Cabinet in Aug. 1917:
1.I assert that there is not a Jewish nation. The members of my family, for instance, who have been in this country for generations, have no sort or kind of community of view or of desire with any Jewish family in any other country beyond the fact that they profess to a greater or less degree the same religion. It is no more true to say that a Jewish Englishman and a Jewish Moor are of the same nation than it is to say that a Christian Englishman and a Christian Frenchman are of the same nation: of the same race, perhaps, traced back through the centuries – through centuries of the history of a peculiarly adaptable race.
2.When the Jews are told that Palestine is their national home, every country will immediately desire to get rid of its Jewish citizens.
3.3.I deny that Palestine is to-day associated with the Jews or properly to be regarded as a fit place for them to live in. .
4.I feel that the Government are asked to be the instrument for carrying out the wishes of a Zionist organisation largely run, as my information goes, at any rate in the past, by men of enemy descent or birth.

As far as you are concerned Shlomo Sand is wrong, Dr Hajo Meyer a Auschwitz survivor is wrong, all non-Zionist Jews are wrong and you are right. So end of discussion. There is no way I am going to convince you and I disagree with almost everything you say. So good luck to you. Sixty plus years have not brought any peace, all because it's the Palestinians fault.

Injustice didn't work in South Africa; didn't work in the colonies; doesn't work in dictatorships; doesn't work in states which use state terror.

I don't say the non peace situation is entirely the fault of Palestinians. But if they wanted a state, they could have it in 1948, in 2001 and in 2007. They always reject that because what they want is a second state for themselves in the West Bank (after Jordan.) And another state half theirs, which is today Israel. The Jews should have nothing. They should be content with the status of dhimmis , denoting restricted individual rights, and no collective rights. You call that justice. That's because you have a Hotentot notion of justice (injustice is when my neighbor steals from me, and justice is when I steal from him.)

You don't understand what being Jewish is all about. To most Jews it's about belonging to the same ancient people, originating from the same ancient land, with a distinct religion. Forcing Jews to give up their collective right of Jewish nationality was something the French did after their revolution. This mickey mouse of Montagu person is just a cowardly reflection of that flagrant injustice inflicted on Jews in some countries, denying their collective rights as a condition for giving them personal rights. Jews are and were a people before Arabs. Get over it.

I think you've made it very clear that I don't understand, and neither do the Shlomo Sand's, the Dr Hajo Meyer's, the Montagu's and other non-Zionists, who you are scornful of.
Nothing in the world will convince you. And I see where you are coming from. I've seen it in the eyes of those gun-toting settlers from northern Europe, proclaiming that the Lord gave them the land.
The power of mythology continues to wreak havoc, from Hagee's Cornerstone church in Texas to the middle east to Pakistan. Abraham of Iraq, where are you?

To most Jews It has little to do with the Lord, but with historical facts. History has this land as the only land that Jews called their own, for at least 1100 years. )To religious Jews it's indeed the Lord's command , as stated in the Torah. (And also in the Quran. Check e.g. Sura 5:21.) In any event, Jews claim only this little piece of land, while Muslims claim the entire world.

Ok nothing to do with the Lord, but stated in the Torah ( for the religious Jews ).
All I say ( I know it's rubbish to you, so you don't have to tell me ) is that of course there were Jews in the middle east before Christians and Muslims; it's older than both, but no religious grouping in the world can claim to be one race or one ethnicity or point to one single piece of land as the origin of every single one of it's followers/adherents.
The predominant position on the origins of man are in the Rift Valley, I am not sure if that would be sufficient for me to have any claim on the valley in east Africa.
In the present climate of another push for war, I was pleasantly surprised to read in a book byDirector of the British Museum, Neil Macgregor " A history of the world in 100 objects, Page169, where he says the Persian Emperor Cyrus's most famous beneficiaries, after the conquest of Babylon, were the Jews and in the Hebrew scriptures he is hailed as a "divinely inspired benefactor and hero"

Unlike Islam Judaism allows criticism and diversity of opinion. Sand and his band have their views, that are the views of a very small minority. There were always anti Jewish Jews among Jews, and they're modern refection of that sorry phenomenon. Most Jews regard them as traitors to their own people. In any event, they don't carry much water and even less weight. The fact itself that the worst enemies of the Jewish people gleefully cite them is proof of their irrelevance to their own people. If they were Muslims saying similar things about Islam, you'd have decapitated them. We just nod in pity and shame.
