On GPS Sunday: Syria’s opposition leader, a top economics panel and talking Higgs boson.

Coming up on GPS Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET, Fareed will host an all-star panel including Larry Kudlow, Zanny Minton Beddoes, Chrystia Freeland and Zachary Karabell to discuss the U.S. economy and November’s U.S. presidential election.

Fareed will also be speaking with Syrian opposition leader Abdul Basit Sieda about a reported massacre in Hama province, the recent discussions with Russian officials in Moscow and the opposition’s claims that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remaining in power is a threat to regional stability.

Finally, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has some fascinating insights into what exactly the “Higgs boson” is, what it could mean for science and why it matters that the so-called God particle looks likely to have been discovered in Europe and not the United States.

There's absolutely no excuse for Assad's atrocities. Yet his armed forces are suffering from burnout and fatigue. Over the past 18 months hey have been deployed from one hotspot to another and are constantly under stress. They just wipe out anything that comes in their way. The rebels have an advantage. They outnumber the armed forces and are widespread. They will prevail one day as the morale of Assad's thugs is collapsing..

Fareed, I'm a huge fan of your show and look forward to watching it every week. One of my favorite things about the show is that you have objective guests talk about real issues. That is why I was so disappointed to see Larry Kudlow on your otherwise excellent panel parroting the anti-Obama Fox News narrative. Please avoid the CROSSFIRE-like political shills in the future. Please!

I agree with Vaporware Blog totally. Kudlow highjacked the discussion and cut-off an interesting discussion. He doesn't belong on a serious panel.

So far as Bakkan and Keystone XL go, 1) it's not US oil, it's open market oil and 2) are we going to just forever ignore climate change - including its profound economic and political cost?

I agree. I love the show and was surprised there was little rebuttal of points of Kudlow and the other conservative. When they raved about how there was now plenty of fossil fuel and the environmentalists were so disappointed, some one should have mentioned that it is not just about supply of fossil fuels....what about the potential harms of fracing and what about the consequences of accelerating global warming in continuing to burn gas like there is no tomorrow??? I know it was a discussion with an economic focus, but the economic ramifications of cleaning up fracing and dealing with global warming are going to be HUGE.

I hate to say that "Sieda" sounded like a paid puppet. He needs to learn all the negative things from Iraq & Libya, and not to ignore some of the positive things from Egypt. Honestly speaking, this man has no clue that United States doesn't care in that region anything other than Israel. Yes, of course, the USA sees these countries as a beneficiary of Israel, in that sense, the USA wants to see stability in that region. So, what are the messages are for that region; educate your people, provide freedom of rights, give equal rights, don’t just teach them to be an Islamic Fanatics, focus them with Math & Science & ETC.

I am with Karabell. I, too, do not buy the argument that businesses in the U.S. are not investing because there is a lack of certainty in our tax structures, regulations, etc. Since when have businesses REQUIRED certainty to seek profit? Isn't risk inherent in the very nature of business? I think the "uncertainty" argument is a copout for corporations–who are sitting on about a trillion dollars of reserves–to hold back on investing in America, whatever their actual reasons may be.

@Fatima They have had business owners say they are growing or hiring because of the uncertainty so it doesn't matter if you "buy their argument" they are saying it and you answered your own question by the way..risk is inherent and they feel that the environment is risky because of the uncertainty hence they don't expand. Also don't confuse multi-nationals with small-medium size businesses..small business is what drives job growth

I was appalled that Chrystia Freeland could say "oil and natural gas are pretty great sources of energy" without so much as mentioning global warming. We are suffering weather disasters all across this country which scientists tell us were made more probable by climate change caused by human actions, chiefly the burning of fossil fuels, but the Right has made the very mention of global warming taboo, and this seems to result in discussion of the merits of fossil fuels by 'pundits' like Freeland as if there were not a tremendous long-term problem facing us, and all we had to worry about is dollars in our pockets. Shame! Future generations will not and should not forgive us.

    Fareed,

As someone who often felt your show was far more informative, relative to what dominates broadcast journalism and news in the US these days, I must say that today's show about very important issues was extremely disapointing for the following reasons: 1. Great that you noted the McKinley study on the jobless nature of the current post crisis period. However, in your analysis about what is different today about the economy in comparison to previous "crisis" you mentioned "globalization-access to cheaper labor" and information technology but failed to mentioned the most fundamental difference in today's economy, THE DOMINANT ROLE THAT BANKING AND FINANCIAL MARKETS NOW PLAY IN DICTATING BOTH DEVELOPMENTS IN THE REAL ECONOMY (JOBS) AND GOVERNMENT ECONOMIC POLICIES. 2. One of your guests said that US economy was in the midst of an evolution, away from being dominated by consumption, and sighted a stat that people were saving more, taking on less debt, and paying down old debt (de-leveraging). Thats odd, because just last week it was reported that consumer credit (credit card debt) jumped up to 17.1 billion, the highest in 5 years. Please Fareed, don't let your otherwise excellent show become another source of dumbing down America!!

Housing will not bottom out till the next generation coming out of college find jobs that are decent enough to make them afford to pay for a home. If not, the next generation would just move from their apartments back to a fully paid home that their parents bequeathed. How will this result in a housing boom? I would say let the government give a property tax holiday and a green card for anyone in EU who is willing to buy a house above a million dollars with 20% down payment and at least employ 10 people in their businesses. Let's open the doors for "Job Creators" from EU for a change....

Let's follow the example of Germany. Let the government directly subsidize the companies for the employees they are planning to lay off than sending unemployment checks to individuals. This would prevent erosion of skill set and also help restore self esteem and consumer confidence.

Why doesn't anyone talk about improving our ports? Compare how long it takes to load and unload a container in Singapore and Amsterdam vs. any port here in the US. How about the time it takes to move products from an inland factory to the nearest port? Are we really equipped to export? What is America's answer to special export processing zones like Schenzhen in China?

You would like to see the US hire from Pakistan for their ports; work these guys like slave labor, pay them pennies and make them live 24 for each crappy apartment ?

How about a legislation that requires public companies and private companies that raise capital in USA to disclose how many people they employ here vs. employee strength abroad? This will provide better visibility into where the employment creation is actually happening and pin point areas where the American work force is really at a disadvantage...

We are big fans of your show. The panel discussion with Larry Kudlow, Zanny Minton Beddoes, Chrystia Freeland and Zachary Karabell this Sunday was not helpful since much of the time several people talked which made it impossible to follow the discussion. The one with the loudest voice often won out so we heard a lot from Larry Kudlow but less from the others. These panel discussions can be good, but they need to be more controlled. You might not invite people back if they try to out-talk or out-shout others. Keep up your excellent programs.

Higgs Boson / "God Particle" announcement from 2012 – is actually a150+ year old discovery
    Steve Meyer -

This definition of New Thought / The New Thought Movement represents an excellenet summary from Wikipedia, and I agree wtih 98% of it. The other 2% – I believe that sickness can start in the mind and/or the body; not just the mind, and that "God" is a religous manufactured term and description of what is actually Infinite Intelligence, and therefore should be removed from the definition….
"New Thought promotes the ideas that "Infinite Intelligence" or "God" is ubiquitous, spirit is the totality of real things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, sickness originates in the mind, and "right thinking" has a healing effect.
Although New Thought is neither monolithic nor doctrinaire, in general modern day adherents of New Thought believe that "God" or "Infinite Intelligence" is "supreme, universal, and everlasting", that divinity dwells within each person, that all people are spiritual beings, that "the highest spiritual principle [is] loving one another unconditionally … and teaching and healing one another", and that "our mental states are carried forward into manifestation and become our experience in daily living".
The New Thought movement is a spiritually-focused or philosophical interpretation of New Thought beliefs. Started in the early 19th century, today the movement consists of a loosely allied group of religious denominations, secular membership organizations,[citation needed] authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of beliefs concerning metaphysics, positive thinking, the law of attraction, healing, life force, creative visualization, and personal power.[3] The three major religious denominations within the New Thought movement are Religious Science, Unity Church and the Church of Divine Science. There are many other smaller churches within the New Thought movement, as well as schools and umbrella organizations."
