Pressure valve off in al-Assad's Syria

By Fareed Zakaria

Over the past sixteen months of bloody conflict in Syria, observers have been waiting for one key development: top-level defections from within President Bashar al-Assad's inner circle. Suddenly, it seems a pressure valve has gone off. Pilots, ambassadors, and even one general have defected. What does it mean?

The general is Manaf Tlas, a childhood friend of Assad, and an officer in the elite Republican Guard.

Tlas’s father was chief of staff and then minister of defense, for 30 years, under Bashar’s father Hafez al-Assad. This is as close to the top of the Syrian regime as you might get. That’s why Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took special note of Tlas.

“If people like him, and like the generals and colonels and others who have recently defected to Turkey are any indication, regime insiders and the military establishment are starting to vote with their feet,” she said.

But there are some crucial caveats. Tlas hadn’t been a member of al-Assad’s inner circle for a while – he had actually been under house arrest for more than a year.

Also, he was high ranking, but he wasn’t an Alawite. While Alawites make up only 12% of Syria’s population, they hold more than 80% of the positions in the powerful Republican Guard. They are the inner circle. According to some reports, when Sunnis are put on guard duty, there’s always an Alawite soldier assigned to monitor the Sunni soldiers.

Related: Reports of new massacre

But if the increasing number of top-level defections is a signal that the Sunni elite, which is comprised of generals, businessmen, bureaucrats and which has so far stuck with al-Assad, is now moving away from him, that’s a huge shift – and one that will ultimately bring down the regime.

There’s mounting evidence that the Sunnis are weakening in their support for the al-Assad regime. We’ve spoken with a former U.S. Marine Austin Tice. He’s now a law student and spending the summer reporting from Syria. On a recent embed with a rebel group, he said he found that the government’s helicopters flew so high that they couldn’t really aim their  missiles; he also said he saw first-hand how hostile fire from al-Assad’s tanks and troops were poorly aimed and seemingly random. The suspicion among many rebels at the time, Tice says, was that the predominantly Sunni pilots and soldiers were deliberately missing their targets.

Related: A deluded elite in Syria?

Another telling indicator of dissent is the number of silent objectors in the army. According to the New York Times, a growing number of Syrian soldiers – many of whom lack the means to flee – are staying home. But to ensure their continued silence and neutrality, these officers continue to draw salaries and pensions.

Money is the main reason to believe that al-Assad's regime cannot last. Inflation is said to be as high as 30%. According to some reports, al-Assad and his cronies are freely printing money; the Syrian pound has depreciated against the dollar by more than half on the black market. Meanwhile, the regime is running out of cash. Ninety percent of Syria’s oil used to go to the European Union, but sanctions have put a stop to that. Tourism and trade have of course plummeted. And monetary support from Iran cannot be counted on indefinitely – Tehran itself is buckling under unprecedented sanctions.

And there was a report last week that Iran is weakening in its support for al-Assad. An Iranian ambassador gave an interview in a Tehran paper criticizing his government’s support for the Syrian regime and saying that al-Assad’s days were obviously numbered.

But there's one more piece to the puzzle – the growing strength of Syria’s opposition. The Free Syria Army is getting stronger. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are now openly arming the rebels, channeling through routes from Turkey, Lebanon, and now even Iraq. Rebel attacks have become more focused, running deeper into the two main cities Damascus and Aleppo. The various opposition groups are coming together to plan for a post-Assad Syria.

The question then is, what would such a Syria look like?

Right now he's doing a lot better than just hanging on. Even if he is deposed there will be no peace because there will be too many different groups trying to claim power.

This guy isn't going to come out easily, but he has to. Back when this was just peaceful protesting, he ordered the mass murders of protestors. He's gotta go. For Syria's sake and for the world's sake.

It's just a matter of time. The longer he stays, the more people die so his karmic debt goes way up. Instead of gracefully leaving ( last year ) , he has managed to hold on and likely will until all of his close friends desert him. He will then have no place to go. I easily see that guy putting a gun to his head instead of leaving. He will be found in a designer suit on a silk covered couch. Fate of his family ? unknown.

I don't think so. Have you noticed that the rebels are now willing to negotiate with Assad, whereas they weren't before. The rebels are no match for Assad ... all they can hope for is that NATO gets involved. However, a decision has been made that nothing will happen before election day in the U.S. - too risky politically. So, Assad has a reprieve at least until then. BTW, everything to me sounds like Austin TIce is a member of the Special Activities Division of the CIA ... so you can't really believe anything he says.

They did have it and now they don't. That is the truth. The only reason that Libya had to fall was because American oil and natural gas complexes were horizontally digging underneath the Libyan border from a neighboring country to steal those resources. Qaddafi was PO'd about this and sought to put a stop to it. He failed and was toppled. Talisman Energy was the biggest player in this drama and it is rumored but not confirmed that they actually armed rebels to protect corporate interest.

Actually Bashar was trained as an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) in the UK after getting a medical degree in Syria. As an MD and the President, I think he could get more powerful pain killers than novacaine. Given what will happen to him if he doesn't make it out of the country, I'd stock up now.

my guess is he has. Bullets are even quicker but it takes guts to blow your head off.....best not to make a mistake and blow half your head off instead of the whole head. Takes longer to die that way. He could do like some Nazis did when Hitler capitulated. They poisoned everybody ; wives, kids, dogs. I think Hitler shot his dog before he shot himself. Easy way out.

Syria is basically occupied by Alawite backing ASSAD regime. Basically this little Hitler with his schizophrenic back ground is attacking unarmed civilian in towns and villiges at random by tanks, morter shells and helicopters. This idiot Assad thinks with his little brain that he can burn syria into ashes. The whole civilized world watching and doing nothing to save innocent people. Especially president Obama the first impotent black president. He is no better than Condi Rice, Colin Powel, Opra Winfrey ..All are clawns dressed to do their ammusement. Stupid Alawites had lost their crediability and respect in syria forever. Iran and Hezbullah also lost the arab world support Israel basically like Assad regime but unfortunately they back on murderors and Dictators to do the bad job. The biggest loser from all this game is Israel. They have not learn their lessons yet...you cannot built your security in that region by resorting to bad guys.

The father ;Hafiz Al Assad of this stupid little Hitler of syria came to rule syria by a covert coup after he betrayed the individuals who braught him back to the army 1963 after he was expelled from the syrian air forces. Hafez has caused a fighter jets to explode by not following orders. His father betrayed his best friends and individuals who trusted him. He was supported behind the closed doors by USA,Israel and UK. Hafez Assad handed the most immune syrian front to Israel in 1967 on a silver plate. Basically Al Assad family are proxy to Israel. The whole western world is giving Assad time after time to survive but unfortunately the USA/Israel do not read the history...which you cannot suppress the will of the oppressed people. Syrian people are not against jews or israeli if they want to live in peace together. The history of the region never showed a big scale holocast to christians and arab jews. Millions of christians live in the middle east and many ancient jewish minorities lived in a very prosperous condition before the establishment of Israel in 1948.

US wants to avoid direct involvement into the conflict and just to keep both sides struggling and weakening each other: because obviously neither could be considered US friend. So it will do anything to make it to continue without any side winning: including switching the sides it supports: helping the weaker side to stay in the battle. So I believe that Assad side is losing when I see CNN denouncing rebels as terrorists and talking every day how they are linked to al-Qaeda and how they kill Syrian people! No signs of that so far....

    • alumette

I have never seen anywhere in CNN reports that rebels are terrorists. They have sent reporters to cover the situation and have been very respectful towards the opposition. It is obvious these people want their freedom and restore the peace. It is heartbreaking to see innocent people die because they cannot go to hospitals. They are getting slaughtered simply because they are there. No one was ever blamed but the current regime of Assad. He still gives the orders. Terrorists ? Al Qaeda ? rumors from Assad regime and not reporters. Maybe the rebels are fighting terrorists. That is possible, mercenaries as such paid by Assad.

The question is begged: after all these 'dictators' are deposed, how really free will the mideast be when it's governed by the Muslim Brotherhood and Shari'a Law? World peace ... yeah.

Norm, I agree! I say let nations choose their sides: support enemies of the US, embrace Western reforms, pick their religion, etc. That way you've got an ACTUAL TARGET instead of 'terrorists' hiding among a population. Then when the US is forced to react to actions of these nations we can roll in there and TAKE their damm country and KEEP it!

We are supposed to move on, progress as the human race. Seems like we have not learned from our past. We keep on repeating it, in one form or another. We kill each other, destroy the earth ....have peace for a while then fight again. We are a very volatile race. Lot of learning to do.

I have not see a key Alawite figure abandon al-Assad to this point, and I do not see it happening at least anytime in the near future. The Alawites have much to lose if al-Assad is removed from power, and make up the majority of the security fources that surround the president. To this point, there does not appear to be much defection from key members. His biggest problem is the fact that money is beginning to run out, and the ability to put forces over the long term on the street may become difficult. I do see al-Assad holding on for a very long time if nothing really changes.

Alawites are but 10-12% of the total population. If Assad loses this one, the Alawites fear for their lives. Sunni will surely take revenge. It`s their way. The Sunnis will massacre the alawites and all of the Assad regime. They will completely miss the opportunity to build a country together. The killing spree will begin as soon as Assad loses power. For Alawites to defect is totally crazy.

You are100% correct. The big mistake made by the naive West and the rebels is that they put the Al-Assad regime between a rock and a hard place. Since they offered him no exit strategy, the Al-Assad regime including the well-armed 12% (Alawites) plus the armed-to-the-teeth Hizballah will kill to the last man woman and child to stay alive. They know it will be their death by slaughter if Al-Assad falls. My prediction is that he will prevail and be a thorn in the side of Hillary Clinton till her last day.

Unfortunately, arab political cultures is what is it today and has been and may not change much in the future. These people on the most part tend to pledge loyalty to their clan or religious afiliation. So country as a whole matter only when they are attacked as a country. But after, they al go back to their clan base mentality. There are plenty of dictotor, mullahs, sheiks , kings and all types of dictators that govern. Most have done terrible things to stay in power. Assad is one. But Assad was always not a puppet of others. He tried to be independent. But the other worse dictotors in the neighborhood have plenty of cash from oil and play nice with western powers. So they don't get bash when they kill their own or violate the most basic civil rights. So they get say with the blessings of other capitals. After Assad, there will be make uo parliament and elections but the real guy will another thug with nice suit and that speak good french or english. He will be the darling. So it matters little because I the end of the day, Arabs will always be Arabs. They will always look for that strong man or clan or sheik or colonel or general or a technocrat or whatever to rule....blessed by a "fair" elction. And this guy will stay if he play his card right with his backers...it. is the unfortunate reality of the world...

That is NOT typical Muslim behavior. It is the behavior of distinct Islamic sects. Like Xtianity, it has hundreds of sects. Those groups are the equivalent of the Xtian conservative evilangelican groups of heretics we see in the US. Both groups practice hate, twist the writings of their holy books, and think of themselves as special friends of their deities. This has historically led to the slaughter of millions of people in the name of their god by both groups..

Well stated Les Too, it is the extremists of any group that are the problem. In the good USA, the so-called "Christian" abortion clinic bombers are disgusting vile terrorists who (like other terrorists) believe the the end justifies the means.

        July 13, 2012 at 4:43 pm |
  40. Les Too

Politics should have no place in the Iran controversy. The only discussion should focus on their ongoing slaughter of innocents. The US, Russia and China need to respond swiftly and with precision to take this murderer and his "friends" out. Democratic or not, a government has no right to attack and kill its own citizens especially their women, elderly and children, The rest of the world is just as guilty so long as they stand by and do nothing to prevent these heinous crimes against humanity. Groups like the Shia are the equivalent to the Xtian evilangelicans in the US. Both groups need to outlawed for spreading hate and fear..

  41. TopView20

Let´s look at the big picture. While the UN balks and woobles, hundred and hundreds of innocents are slaughtered. The UN is nothing but a "delay of action" to any necessary activity to prevent ongoing civilian murders. Strip this killing beaurocracy from the world, and put aggressive military rescue units where they need to be. Does the world really believe we need to wonder about Russia´s motives before we save innocent lives? Rescue, then wonder. But do not languish first! The United Nations is a shamelful excuse for ongoing slaughters.

You are most likely a non Muslim islamophobic moron who wants to yell non sense and pretend to be a Muslim to give bad name to Muslims. If you really are a Muslim you should stop using your time spreading "Wisdom" on CNN blogs and read a thing or 2 written in Quran.

“whoever kills an innocent soul, who has not taken a life or brought destruction to society, is as if has killed the entire humanity; and whoever saves an innocent soul is as if he has saved the entire humanity.” (Al-Ma'idah 5: 32).

      The Quran:

Quran (2:191-193) – "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]... but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah." The historical context of this passage is not defensive warfare, since Muhammad and his Muslims had just relocated to Medina and were not under attack by their Meccan adversaries. In fact, the verses urge offensive warfare, in that Muslims are to drive Meccans out of their own city (which they later did). The use of the word "persecution" by some Muslim translators is thus disingenuous (the actual Muslim words for persecution – "idtihad" – and oppression – a variation of "z-l-m" – do not appear in the verse). The actual Arabic comes from "fitna" which can mean disbelief, or the disorder that results from unbelief or temptation. Taken as a whole, the context makes clear that violence is being authorized until "religion is for Allah" – ie. unbelievers desist in their unbelief.

Quran (2:244) – "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things."

Quran (2:216) – "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not." Not only does this verse establish that violence can be virtuous, but it also contradicts the myth that fighting is intended only in self-defense, since the audience was obviously not under attack at the time. From the Hadith, we know that this verse was narrated at a time that Muhammad was actually trying to motivate his people into raiding merchant caravans for loot.

Quran (3:56) – "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."

Quran (3:151) – "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". This speaks directly of polytheists, yet it also includes Christians, since they believe in the Trinity (ie. what Muhammad incorrectly believed to be 'joining companions to Allah').

Quran (4:74) – "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." The martyrs of Islam are unlike the early Christians, led meekly to the slaughter. These Muslims are killed in battle, as they attempt to inflict death and destruction for the cause of Allah. Here is the theological basis for today's suicide bombers.

Quran (4:76) – "Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah…"

Quran (4:89) – "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks."

Quran (4:95) – "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward,-" This passage criticizes "peaceful" Muslims who do not join in the violence, letting them know that they are less worthy in Allah's eyes. It also demolishes the modern myth that "Jihad" doesn't mean holy war in the Quran, but rather a spiritual struggle. Not only is the Arabic word used in this passage, but it is clearly not referring to anything spiritual, since the physically disabled are given exemption. (The Hadith reveals the context of the passage to be in response to a blind man's protest that he is unable to engage in Jihad and this is reflected in other translations of the verse).

        @ what you wrote below------–
"The historical context of this passage is not defensive warfare, since Muhammad and his Muslims had just relocated to Medina and were not under attack by their Meccan adversaries. In fact, the verses urge offensive warfare, in that Muslims are to drive Meccans out of their own city (which they later did)"----- You are partially correct and there is alot of inaccurate content in it. For one thing Muhammad (PBUH) and "his Muslims" were also Meccans. Muhammad (PBUH) was him self Meccan. Abu baker, Usman, Ali and huge number of Muslims were from Mecca. If you look at the Quranic text it says "drive those out who drove you out of your home". Muslims were freeing their own homeland at the first place. Also its really diengenous of you to quote Quran half way in the story. Why didnt you quote one verse before the one you started quoting? That verse says that non Muslim minority has 4 months to leave the holly city and even after this time if someone wants to visit holly city for getting educated about message of Islam they can do so in safety and protection that must be provided to them by Muslims and escorted back out of holly city to make sure no harm comes to non Muslims while they are in holy city. I guess that part of story is very important to quote else if you tell half story it really makes Muslims look super crazy.

Also why you are putting things in brackets which are not part of Quran?

        -----------------------------–
All the verses are talking about what happened in the battle of OHAD. It is not talking about Christians or Jewish people. Quran uses the phrase "AHLE KITAB" i.e. people of the book for Christians and Jews. Please don't impose your opinions on Quran. You are correct that we the Muslims believe that Christian people imposed divinity incorrectly on Jesus Peace be Upon Him who was a messenger a sin less MAN and a great great Messenger of God and Son of Marry with no father.

Quran (4:104) – "And be not weak hearted in pursuit of the enemy; if you suffer pain, then surely they (too) suffer pain as you suffer pain..." Is pursuing an injured and retreating enemy really an act of self-defense?

Quran (5:33) – "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"

Quran (8:12) – "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them" No reasonable person would interpret this to mean a spiritual struggle.

Quran (8:15) – "O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them. (16)Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless maneuvering for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end."

Quran (8:39) – "And fight with them until there is no more fitna (disorder, unbelief) and religion should be only for Allah" Some translations interpret "fitna" as "persecution", but the traditional understanding of this word is not supported by the historical context (See notes for 2:293, also). The Meccans were simply refusing Muhammad access to their city during Haj. Other Muslims were allowed to travel there – just not as an armed group, since Muhammad had declared war on Mecca prior to his eviction. The Meccans were also acting in defense of their religion, since it was Muhammad's intention to destroy their idols and establish Islam by force (which he later did). Hence the critical part of this verse is to fight until "religion is only for Allah", meaning that the true justification of violence was the unbelief of the opposition. According to the Sira (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 324) Muhammad further explains that "Allah must have no rivals."

It does not matter how long Assad hangs on. Syria is his country! It is his government! None of this is ours! We have no business intruding. For no reason should we concern ourselves with the problems of another country UNLESS it borders our country and the problem could spill over to us. We have enough domestic problems ourselves without spending our time, money, our military resources nor our "supposed" leaders. We need to solve America's problems and to let Assad solve Syria's problems. Those of us who continually yell "human rights" should look at the condition of our own backyard and stop imposing on others in the name of a political slogan!

Well done, Fareed! I like you bringing facts, sources, and your narrative in light of the data.

I returned from Damascus over a month ago and arrived there three hours after an explosion went off.

I think that Assad will hang on for as long as he is not convinced that his survival and the Alawites' are in jeopardy. He is holding on knowing full well that he and the Alawites will be shredded into pieces.

I talked with rebels, a cleric, and one regime supporter formerly with the intelligence services.

The rebels told me, "We don't want money. We want weapons." They erupted into loud rhetoric about how they will kill Assad and the Alawites. The description is too graphic to put here. Additionally, they have no understanding of the word democracy. Regrettably and on the contrary, their tears of mourning are dried by the thoughts of an escalated revenge. They, too, are committing acts of inhumanity against each other and others. The rate of crime had escalated, but no one is counting. Gone were those days when a lady could walk at 2 am alone. People are getting robbed, mugged, and assaulted daily. The country came undone in other ways as well. Syria, once a model for interfaith harmonic living, now resembles Jerusalem, the most sanctified city in the world in the sense that people migrated not only into sectarian, but also denominational clusters. They are seeking shelter in numbers and developed fear and prejudice toward others. The Jews in Damascus fled.

I can go on. For more, please check my one paragraph note and picture on http://osamawazan.blogspot.com/

Vlasov's defection didn't save the Germans, the Cordon Sanitaire didn't destroy the Soviet Union, bankruptcy and oil embargos didn't topple Saddam Hussein. The Syrian opposition might topple Assad they might not. The facts are though, that if they were as popular as everyone seems to want to pretend they would have toppled Assad by now, and they certainly wouldn't be sitting around complaining about the West not doing their fighting for them. Likewise, if Assad killed everyone opposed to him there would be a lot more dead than even the opposition claims; there are some pretty obvious reasons that Tienanmen Square didn't last 16 months.

Quran (9:29) – "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." "People of the Book" refers to Christians and Jews. This was one of the final "revelations" from Allah and it set in motion the tenacious military expansion, in which Muhammad's companions managed to conquer two-thirds of the Christian world in the next 100 years. Islam is intended to dominate all other people and faiths.
Quran (9:30) – "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!"
Quran (9:38-39) – "O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter. Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place." This is a warning to those who refuse to fight, that they will be punished with Hell.

Quran (9:41) – "Go forth, light-armed and heavy-armed, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah! That is best for you if ye but knew." See also the verse that follows (9:42) – "If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them" This contradicts the myth that Muslims are to fight only in self-defense, since the wording implies that battle will be waged a long distance from home (in another country and on Christian soil, in this case, according to the historians).
Quran (9:73) – "O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination." Dehumanizing those who reject Islam, by reminding Muslims that they are merely firewood for Hell, makes it easier to justify slaughter. It also explains why today's devout Muslims have little regard for those outside the faith.
Quran (9:88) – "But the Messenger, and those who believe with him, strive and fight with their wealth and their persons: for them are (all) good things: and it is they who will prosper."
Quran (9:111) – "Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Quran: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme."

Quran (21:44) – "We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them; See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will win?"
Quran (25:52) – "Therefore listen not to the Unbelievers, but strive against them with the utmost strenuousness..." "Strive against" is Jihad – obviously not in the personal context. It's also significant to point out that this is a Meccan verse.
Quran (33:60-62) – "If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and the alarmists in the city do not cease, We verily shall urge thee on against them, then they will be your neighbors in it but a little while. Accursed, they will be seized wherever found and slain with a (fierce) slaughter." This passage sanctions the slaughter (rendered "merciless" and "horrible murder" in other translations) against three groups: Hypocrites (Muslims who refuse to "fight in the way of Allah" (3:167) and hence don't act as Muslims should), those with "diseased hearts" (which include Jews and Christians 5:51-52), and "alarmists" or "agitators who include those who merely speak out against Islam, according to Muhammad's biographers. It is worth noting that the victims are to be sought out by Muslims, which is what today's terrorists do. If this passage is meant merely to apply to the city of Medina, then it is unclear why it is included in Allah's eternal word to Muslim generations.

Quran (47:3-4) – "Those who reject Allah follow vanities, while those who believe follow the truth from their lord. Thus does Allah set forth form men their lessons by similitude. Therefore when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners," Those who reject Allah are to be subdued in battle. The verse goes on to say the only reason Allah doesn't do the dirty work himself is in order to to test the faithfulness of Muslims. Those who kill pass the test. "But if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost."
Quran (47:35) – "Be not weary and faint-hearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost (Shakir: "have the upper hand") for Allah is with you,"
Quran (48:17) – "There is no blame for the blind, nor is there blame for the lame, nor is there blame for the sick (that they go not forth to war). And whoso obeyeth Allah and His messenger, He will make him enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow; and whoso turneth back, him will He punish with a painful doom." Contemporary apologists sometimes claim that Jihad means 'spiritual struggle.' Is so, then why are the blind, lame and sick exempted? This verse also says that those who do not fight will suffer torment in hell

Bukhari (52:220) – Allah's Apostle said... 'I have been made victorious with terror'
Quran (48:29) – "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard (ruthless) against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves" Islam is not about treating everyone equally. There are two very distinct standards that are applied based on religious status. Also the word used for 'hard' or 'ruthless' in this verse shares the same root as the word translated as 'painful' or severe' in verse 16.
Quran (61:4) – "Surely Allah loves those who fight in His way" Religion of Peace, indeed! This is followed by (61:9): "He it is who has sent His Messenger (Mohammed) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam) to make it victorious over all religions even though the infidels may resist."
Quran (61:10-12) – "O ye who believe! Shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from a grievous Penalty?- That ye believe in Allah and His Messenger, and that ye strive (your utmost) in the Cause of Allah, with your property and your persons: That will be best for you, if ye but knew! He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, and to beautiful mansions in Gardens of Eternity." This verse was given in battle. It uses the Arabic word, Jihad.
Quran (66:9) – "O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Hell will be their home, a hapless journey's end." The root word of "Jihad" is used again here. The context is clearly holy war, and the scope of violence is broadened to include "hypocrites" – those who call themselves Muslims but do not act as such.

Other than the fact that Muslims haven't killed every non-Muslim under their domain, there is very little else that they can point to as proof that theirs is a peaceful, tolerant religion. Where Islam is dominant (as in the Middle East and Pakistan) religious minorities suffer brutal persecution with little resistance. Where Islam is in the minority (as in Thailand, the Philippines and Europe) there is the threat of violence if Muslim demands are not met. Either situation seems to provide a justification for religious terrorism, which is persistent and endemic to Islamic fundamentalism.

The reasons are obvious and begin with the Quran. Few verses of Islam's most sacred text can be construed to fit the contemporary virtues of religious tolerance and universal brotherhood. Those that do are earlier "Meccan" verses which are obviously abrogated by later ones. This is why Muslim apologists speak of the "risks" of trying to interpret the Quran without their "assistance" – even while claiming that it is a perfect book.

        July 14, 2012 at 2:13 pm |
      • Katie

Far from being mere history or theological construct, the violent verses of the Quran have played a key role in very real massacre and genocide. This includes the brutal slaughter of tens of millions of Hindus for five centuries beginning around 1000 AD with Mahmud of Ghazni's bloody conquest. Both he and the later Tamerlane (Islam's Genghis Khan) slaughtered an untold number merely for defending their temples from destruction. Buddhism was very nearly wiped off the Indian subcontinent. Judaism and Christianity met the same fate (albeit more slowly) in areas conquered by Muslim armies, including the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Europe, including today's Turkey. Zoroastrianism, the ancient religion of a proud Persian people is despised by Muslims and barely survives in modern Iran.
So ingrained is violence in the religion that Islam has never really stopped being at war, either with other religions or with itself.

Muhammad's failure to leave a clear line of succession resulted in perpetual internal war following his death. Those who knew him best first fought to keep remote tribes from leaving Islam and reverting to their preferred religion (the Ridda or 'Apostasy wars'). Then, within the closer community, early Meccan converts battled later ones. Hostility developed between those immigrants who had traveled with Muhammad to Mecca and the Ansar at Medina who had helped them settle in. Finally there was a violent struggle within Muhammad's own family between his favorite wife and favorite daughter – a jagged schism that has left Shias and Sunnis at each others' throats to this day.

  100. one of obama's closest advisors in samantha power, who fashioned the "right2 protect" doctrine

so? where is THE RIGHT2 PROTECT now? they felt the need to prevent a massacre in libya(oil), and yet, when a real massacre is taking place dqay after day after day after day after month after month after month...obama and power and hillary are NOWEHRE to be found. Leading from behind in libya was the easy thing to do as france and the UK CHOSE to lead from the front....so obama's marketing team came up with the "lead from behind" bs....but now that one has to lead from the front, in a really tough situation, no one is around to do it because leading from behind became so coool......

yep, thats obama for you...cooool, detached, weak, feckless, totally lacking cohones to lead from the front and be a true statesman in the mold of past american leaders.

People in power are killing civilians to stay in power... and yes this is happening in a Muslim country on this instance thus muslim killing muslims. It has happened before else where too like in UK vs Ireland. Christians killing Christians. In Ammerican civil war.. Christian killing Christains. All of European history is filled with Christians killing Christians.. I am not surprised.

The strangest and most untrue thing that can be said about Islam is that it is a Religion of Peace. If every standard by which the West is judged and condemned (slavery, imperialism, intolerance, misogyny, s repression, warfare...) were applied equally to Islam, the verdict would be devastating. Islam never gives up what it conquers, be it religion, culture, language or life. Neither does it make apologies or any real effort at moral progress. It is the least open to dialogue and the most self-absorbed. It is convinced of its own perfection, yet brutally shuns self-examination and represses criticism.
This is what makes the Quran's verses of violence so dangerous. They are given the weight of divine command. While Muslim terrorists take them as literally as anything else in their holy book, and understand that Islam is incomplete without Jihad, moderates offer little to contradict them – outside of opinion. Indeed, what do they have? Speaking of peace and love may win over the ignorant, but when every twelfth verse of Islam's holiest book either speaks to Allah's hatred for non-Muslims or calls for their death, forced conversion, or subjugation, it's little wonder that sympathy for terrorism runs as deeply as it does in the broader community – even if most Muslims personally prefer not to interpret their religion in this way.

How long can Assad hang on? Well, a very long time, evidently. It's been over a year, right? The U.S. and Britain were very quick to intervene in Egypt where the army purchases billions of $ of American and British arms, but in the case of Syria, we seem content to sit on the sidelines and let the slaughter continue. I am not saying we should be in Syria, but I would like some consistent, meaningful goals in our foreign policy, please.

        Muhammad
Tabari 7:97 The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, "Kill any Jew who falls under your power." Ashraf was a poet, killed by Muhammad's men because he insulted Islam. Here, Muhammad widens the scope of his orders to kill. An innocent Jewish businessman was then slain by his Muslim partner, merely for being non-Muslim.
Tabari 9:69 "Killing Unbelievers is a small matter to us" The words of Muhammad, prophet of Islam.
Tabari 17:187 "'By God, our religion (din) from which we have departed is better and more correct than that which these people follow. Their religion does not stop them from shedding blood, terrifying the roads, and seizing properties.' And they returned to their former religion." The words of a group of Christians who had converted to Islam, but realized their error after being shocked by the violence and looting committed in the name of Allah. The price of their decision to return to a religion of peace was that the men were beheaded and the woman and children enslaved by the caliph Ali.
Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 327: – “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’”

Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 990: – Lest anyone think that cutting off someone's head while screaming 'Allah Akbar!' is a modern creation, here is an account of that very practice under Muhammad, who seems to approve.

Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 992: – "Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah." Muhammad's instructions to his men prior to a military raid.

Muslim (20:4645) – "...He (the Messenger of Allah) did that and said: There is another act which elevates the position of a man in Paradise to a grade one hundred (higher), and the elevation between one grade and the other is equal to the height of the heaven from the earth. He (Abu Sa'id) said: What is that act? He replied: Jihad in the way of Allah! Jihad in the way of Allah!"

Muslim (20:4696) – "the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: 'One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihid died the death of a hypocrite.'"

Muslim (19:4321-4323) – Three separate hadith in which Muhammad shrugs over the news that innocent children were killed in a raid by his men against unbelievers. His response: "They are of them (meaning the enemy)."

Muslim (19:4294) – "When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) appointed anyone as leader of an army or detachment he would especially exhort him... He would say: Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war... When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them... If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them.

The Syrian people are fed up with Assad and at this point, his fall is inevitable. Even Russia is starting to restrict arms shipments (This may be because of pressure. Even if some other country steps in and keeps the regime together, there will never be peace in Syria. The people are not going to give up now and the regime will eventually go down. After the atrocities that the government has committed, they will never be trusted. Assad's fortress is crumbing around him and he is selfishly prolonging his peoples' suffering. If he and his accomplices are not before the ICC by the end of the year, then something will need to be done. I do not like war and conflict, but Assad needs to be overthrown. He and the other Syrian officials have no regard for human rights. They are not just enemies of their own people, but of humanity. When will the rest of the world see this?

Yup, lets take him out like we did Daffy in Libya and Saddam in Iraq, that worked out really well. In Libya we openly suppoered Muslim Brotherhood and Al Quada terrorists in a coup and now they are sending weapons and fighters to Syria. Libyan weapons have also turned up in Mali, Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen.
This is civil war and let the government and the rebels fight it out. Both sides are torturing and murdering men, women, and children so it is nor right to choose sides when both are equally evil.

I have a feeling that he's doing what has to be done to run his country. If you know the story, you know that there are militants instigating the Syrian military against the protestors and the civilians are being killed in the crossfire. A man shouldn't be villianized just because he decides that a daily interview isn't a priority. But he should make a meeting with the protestors for the sake of ending the fighting.

that is a common tactic that murdering dictators use when they become desperate; blame an external source for their problems, deflect attention somewhere else. In this case, use the old favorite Syriian scape-goats: America, Israel, Turkey, and let's throw Saudi Arabia in there as well. Every Muslim dictator does this when things go sour. Gadoofy tried it too. So did Amadoodyjob when people started rioting. ALWAYS tell the people that some foriegn enemy is to blame for their problems. Works every time. That's why these Muslim dictators dont really want to get rid of Israel. They are too convenient to blame everything on. Without them, they would have to find a new scapegoat.

I work with a man from Syria. His take on this is that the Syrian government is butchering more Syrians than the Israelis ever did. The Israelis got into a fight on that boat of "relief" supplies headed for Gaza, some were killed, and the entire Arab and Muslim world was enraged. Yet this mass murderer is slaughtering people by the thousands, and the Arab world stands by, mute. It's hypocrisy. That's his view of it.

It doesn't take a degree in political science nor an on-site observer status to deduce that Assad's days are finally numbered. I have friends in Syria and Lebanon who dread what's coming after this butcher. They are mostly Christians. I keep on telling them that the Christians – to a large part – are co-responsible for the regime in the first place. Christians thought they'd be safe under the tutelage of the unelected Alawite dictator. The ones who really will have a heavy price to pay are the Alawites, not all of which support the regime.

As for those who speak up in support of the regime, all I can say is: How stupid do you think the world is to believe this garbage about "terrorists" and "al-Qaeda"? I am certainly not. The fall of the Assad regime will have wider repercussions in the Middle East. Iran's isolation will increase. Hezbollah in Lebanon will have some explaining to do. Hamas in Gaza will be further isolated. Israel is gaining from the demise of the Assad regime and that's just fine with me.

Once there were rebels in Northern Ireland, they were shooting, planting bombs like those rebels in Libya nad now Syria. Yet, we (I mean CNN and wealthy and powerful standing behind) support them and hail them heros. What a hyporcisy, wake up people in the world, the wealthy and greedy people are draging the world into disaster. Every country in history that invaded other country did it in name of saving peace and self defence – they created chaos first so they could restore peace – on their own terms. History is repeating. All rebels in Syria have been planted there from abroad to create chaos and massacres that is used as propaganda by media (eg CNN). Once Assad is gone and a new puppet regime is installed in Syria (this may or may not happen, depends how Russia and China will react – Assad is just a pawn on the chessbord) Syria wil be used as a spring board to invade Iran. And the same chaos will rule as now in Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan ...

Americans have big hearts but people with big hearts are also easy to deceive. They believed Bush and the gov. and they invaded Iraq to find weapons of mass destruction. They never found them so they proclaimed they came to help people to get rid of the tytant. They destryed the country, killed nearly million people and after 10 years they are still fighting – with Iraqi people. They destryed Afghanistan, Libya – all in the name of their people and their protection. And the history is repeating again – now in Syria. And people believe what they hear and read from their media. The media serve them what they want to hear to get their attention.
In 1939 Germany nation was completly brainwashed, their soldiers were murdering people in occupoed countries, the gas chambers were killing masses and the people were still blind. After war they say – I did not know. I wonder what people responsible for all these attrocities say once it's over and justice will take place. It seems impossible now, but I came from a country where justice seemed to be impossible once – and it changed almost overnight.

80% of that 80% would rather have Assad then Salafist theocracy. Right now, rebels are busy killing every Sunni who dares to support regime, and refusing theocracy is considered "supporting regime". Think about: if Syria becomes democratic, Assad might be gone, but rebels paymasters in Saudi Arabia would be next.

How long will Assad last? It's somewhat complicated eqution. Politically, it depends on what snaps first: the American patience, or the Russian hubris. In terms of physics, it will depedn on two things also, what snaps first, the neck of the rope! This is why it is paramount to stop the nightmare immediately! At issue are too many lives ... including Assad's! Assad musi być usunięty natychmiast. To on wzniecił ten pożar niemądrym rządzeniem! Życie jego i jego rodziny winno być zagwarantowane przez Rosję, która go broniła. Radzę zaaresztowanie go i umieszczenie na jednym z rosyjskich okrętów, wraz z rodziną i najbliższym okręgiem współpracowników. To oznacza usunięcie Assada!

Your suggestion makes sense except that I doubt Assad would be willing to move permanently (i.e. exiled) to Russia. Even though some Arabs (like Assad) like and trust the Russians, they dread the Russian climate and the Russian culture. It would be a good thing if it happens because it will pause the conflict , but I seriously doubt it. By the way, I say "pause" because when that happens it will be a short pause after which the conflict will start again, this time between different factions in the fight. If there is one good thing to be said about the Assads (father and son) it is that they created a relatively stable period in Syria's history through an iron fist rule (which is the only way Arabs understand).

I now believe Assad when he says of his security forces, "They are not my forces." He and Asma are effectively hostages of a pathocracy—an organized anarchy of some seriously sick f***s, who call themselves Shabiha, or Cbihh.
They say, "Assad [stays], or the country burns." They mean it. They will destroy Syria, before they loose their hold on power. When the rightful leaders of Free Syria win, and they will, we won't need prison cells for Cbihh, we'll need padded cells.

Syria would sooner break then become Salafist and rebels are dominated by Salafist. Opposition broke on two groups: one accepting Assad's program of democratization and other siding with rebels who insist on regime change (and purge of government supporters). So far, regime is winning on battlefield... Unless some political (election first) solution is found, don't count on quick regime removal without Western military intervention.

Its so easy to just go with the flow whatever the western media states must be the truth, NOT! I am currently living in Syria all is not as seems a majority of the Syrian people are behind this president. But unfortunately the west does not want the world to know this. The truth is 3 of i believe 13 states in Syria are home to a majority of the so called resistance. The rest of the states including Damascus and Allepo (who's population combined is more than half of the Syrian population) are supporters of this government. Now the fundamental principals of a democracy is majority rules if a majority of Syrians want this president who in the west has the right to ask him to resign? To make this simple if New York, California and New Hampshire do not want President Obama as president and ask him to resign should he? If he refuses should they take up arms against the government and start terrorist campaigns in the United States? If they did wouldn't the US use its armed forces to impose law and order back to its streets? Of course they would and for you out there who doubt this remember the LA riots? I believe do remember seeing US soldiers on the streets of LA .

This may be news to you LILO but we are fully aware that Muslims lie-it is in their Qu’ran and therefore second nature to them. I do not even believe that you live in Syria, never mind anything else you may have to say. You and your people do not know the meaning of “truth”.
Regardless of this, even if only three states out of 13 disagree with the current government, do you not think that something could and should be done to appease them? These people should be brought into the fold instead of murdering and butchering them and their children. Assad's methods are barbaric.

The sheer ignorance displayed in these comments here is almost overwhelming. Its unfortunate that in 2012 there are still those that are content justifying death with religious doctrine. I don't care who you are; Christian, Muslim, Jewish, whatever, YOUR PERSONAL BELIEFS TO NOT JUSTIFY KILLING OTHER PEOPLE! Nevertheless you will all find truth in the end, and that truth is such that the most simple explanation is probably correct... there is nothing after this life but a return to the earth, so all your religious "struggles" will have been in vain.

There is so much in this life, on this earth, in the hearts of the human race to be thankful for. Yet you squander this wonderful opportunity at consciousnesses, on anger and hatred. Consider that is little more than your insecurity and lack of understanding of the world around you. If you want to be truly happy, just live for yourself and stop trying to convince the world that you are more important than you truly are. Your ego's will be your downfall.

Assad needs to understand that his days of ruling Syria are over. The earlier he goes the better are his chances of people giving him some positive (only some) in their memory, history treating him a wee bit positively and he being able to remain alive (he is currently just about 50 or so). The more he delays the more he is making sure that his name goes down in history as a despot and that he dies a hunted person.

for many men, bent on self-destruction, the addiction to power, in my opinion, is a daddy complex that will never be satiated. the obsession with " power", i believe, is an attempt to get the approval and love that daddy never gave and will never give. these men have to face the hard fact that they didn't get what they wanted as little boys, and they never will find that love and support that they seek from daddy as grown men. they need to grow up and learn to figure out a way to build their inner self esteem and love themselves. bashar al-assad's life will likely end as did hussein's and quadafi's and hitler's. it is a shame that they all didn't use their political influence to relieve pain and suffering and instead created so much pain and suffering.

This is sad. I won't deface anyone's opinion, but this is hardly a conversation but rather a mass of people blindly agreeing with propaganda. I mean no offence to anyone, but as that you do some research other than what CNN and Fox and other media outlets show you. All hard evidence has shown the Rebels to be the ones killing innocents, and if you think otherwise, stop and do a bit of logic. Do you people really think Assad is telling his army to go out and kill innocent people? Jesus...
The Rebels have been proven to be backed by CIA and other Western powers from the start before dialogue was even discussed. China and Russia are stopping action because they know NATO is one step closer to their front doors, and want Syria for its strategic use against Iran. Please people....I'm begging you....stop listening to propaganda and start thinking this out....if Nato was really being used for good, why did we not stop darfur and other massacres from happening? Take a peak at a map of the middle east and notice how the USA has been slowly taking over each region....its called imperialism.

I don't want to see another Iraq, where many more U.S. troops would die, as well as more innocent Syrians. The U.S. military are not world police, they are killers, it is what they were trained to do and do a damn fine job of that. Protests in Saudi Arabia...Silence in the US

Anti-regime demonstrators gather in the Qatif region of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, July 8, 2012.
Saudi Arabians are continuing to stage anti-government demonstrations, despite a violent crackdown by the security forces.

There have a number of demonstrations in several towns over the past few days, Press TV reported on Sunday.

Demonstrators have condemned the brutal police crackdown and are demanding the release of Shia cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr, who was attacked, injured and arrested on July 8.

On July 13, Saudi security forces in the town of Awamiyah killed an 18-year-old protester during a demonstration held near a police station in support of Sheikh Nemr.

Meanwhile, 10 female protesters were arrested in the city of Buraydah, about 380 kilometers northwest of the capital Riyadh, over the past couple of days.

Since February 2011, protesters have held numerous demonstrations in Saudi Arabia, mainly in the Qatif region and Awamiyah in the Eastern Province, calling for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to widespread discrimination.

However, the demonstrations have turned into protests against the House of Saud, especially since November 2011, when Saudi security forces killed five protesters and injured many others in Eastern Province.

Similar demonstrations have also been held in Riyadh and the holy city of Medina over the past few weeks.

The Saudi Interior Ministry issued a statement on March 5, 2011, prohibiting “all forms of demonstrations, marches or protests, and calls for them.”

According to Human Rights Watch, the Saudi regime “routinely represses expression critical of the government.”

Anytime I read a post about the conflict on CNN it seems like the simple solution is for the Alawites to be wiped out and for Sunnis to take over. It must be fun being a brutal totalitarian muslim dictator: your actions have no consequences. because no matter what happens in your state thats bad, even if you directly caused it, its not your faulty: its the Jews!

-Brutally opressing your own people and running torture camps against political opponents? Its the fault of the Jews!
-Treating your own women like subhuman slaves woerth less than cattle? Its the fault of the Jews!
-Massacring peaceful protesters for the crime of seeking reforms? Its the fault of the Jews!
-Citizenry slaughtering each other in interfaith muslim sectarian violence? Its the fault of the Jews!

According to some people here, brutal totalitarian muslim dictators can never do anything wrong, because if anyone points out ANY aspect of their repulsive behavior, racist and opressive societies, mysogenist policies, or brutal police states, they can just blame it all on the jews!

( Reports of "silent objectors" in the army)
Reported by whom? CNN's Think tanks? the activists like a guy living in London reporting all this with a cell phone ?

    ( A shortage of cash)
    Activist claims on twitter.

(– the growing strength of Syria’s opposition.

The question then is, what would such a Syria look like?)

I guess since Zakaria admits it i am sure Zakaria wont mind an alliance of Sryia and the two undemocratically countries of Qatar and Saudi Arabia then.

Assad will hang on just as long as he can and will probably remove all opposition. No outsiders are able to do anything it seems at this point including the UN and the Arab League. Russia and China are not going to openly oppose him because this is a civil war and they have vested interests to wait util it is all over.

The problem is that Russia and China are feeling that they are loosing all influence in the region and that is why they are not supporting going after Al-Assad. They have seen the chaotic management of Iraq and Afganistan. And quite frankly, I understand that they do not see a military action against the Al-Assad regime with good eyes, because they feel that if it is bad now, with the US being in there, it will not be much better, i.e. Iraq, with the difference that they will have no control what so ever anymore. They only solution is to put a viable roadmap on the table, where all parties will have equal rights, first of all the Syrian people. So far I have not heard anything from the US in that direction. If Russia would have invaded, under false pretext (weapons of mass destruction), Mexico, then the US would be very far from supporting an other military action on there doorsteps from Russia, even if doorstep country would be Chavez's Venezuela. Politics are politics, if you like it or not. If the US wants Russia and China on their side I would let them take the initiative and support them, but is something what the US would not agree either. Unfortunately people come last, otherwise the US would have to invade most African countries.

Iobna, I do not thing that what I have stated is simple, in actual fact it is very complicated that the US and Russia/China will pull from the same side of the roap. But Russia/China are not intrested in Al-Assad, they are only intrested in not loosing influence. They are already at a point where they are disacoating to Al-Assad:

Im glad to know that Saudi Arabia and Qatar are stepping up to help the Syrian people with arms so they can take their country back . Enough innocent civilians have been killed that prove Al-Assad needs to be driven from power since he bungled any chance to reform his government running Syria. Peaceful negotiation would have been preferable but when he decided to continue cracking down and killing civilians: men , women and children, he squandered the chance . Shame on Russia and China for backing this murderer to the hilt. It's not surprising though considering how they like to handle dissent in their own country: usually the same means, mass arrest and detention, and killing people who are part of the opposition or they THINK is part of the opposition. I shall rejoice for the Syrian people when I see that Al Assad is driven out of power.

Mr. Al Assad has no options. If he faces his country's radicals, they will hang him. If he faces the ICC, they will imprison him for life. If he continues to fight, to the death, he will die with honor and be considered a hero by his supporters. When I served in Vietnam, we were brain washed by something called "The domino theory". The theory is still alive and well except it is directed at the Middle East. NGO's staffed by western radicals and CIA operatives are driving a democratic take over of the area. Russia seems to be the only Country that has wised up.

Defections mean nothing. CNN reporting is much better indication: when they start showing the opposition as the terrorists they are – that will be the sign! Today I saw first disturbing signs: CNN has shown some photos of popular support for Assad and of victims of suicide bombings...US will maneuver around to keep the fight going: because it has no friends there. If opposition wins though US will have another future war in ME on its hands: it will be matter of few years for the situation to become intolerable.

      You said: "Defections mean nothing".
PHNOM PENH — The United States says military and diplomatic defections in Syria show a continuing "momentum building" against President Bashar al-Assad. The White House said Thursday that desperation is growing within Assad's government. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is calling for tougher U.N. action against Damascus.

  257. Enough of this

Enough of this religion bull… Quit listening to other people that do NOT use any critical thinking at all. Stop listening to CNN and having other people do your thinking for you. Do you really think that this at all has to do with religion? Iraq had been an enemy that had repeatedly showed they would use force against us, Afghanistan was a strategic position that helps us to surround Iran and be close enough to Pakistan to use them as a highway for equipment, and Afghanistan is also one of the fastest growing populations in the region. Their government was being occupied by multiple organizations that left the stability of the country in jeopardy in terms of the regions security and welfare. They were training organizations that were radical and were directly threating western allies and the US. Regards to the other countries such as Egypt and Libya, this can be acknowledged by the term American’s known as “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” American’s know that if repressed people have an opportunity to rise up to regimes that for generations have harmed their welfare they would. In the name of democracy these people would want to be happy and live without fear. We as American’s continue to under look and not appreciate what we have here? What are we really complaining about? Basically it is we are not as rich or as well off as are parents or their parents, yet we live so well compared to what others have. As for Syria, this is just another example of if the people think the west will help they will rise up, Russia and China continue to veto the UN resolutions because they fear the fact that the days of their youth wanting freedom is coming and they do NOT want the inevitable protests to carry over to their countries. We will continue the propaganda in an effort to show everyone else that if you want freedom we will do what we can to help the efforts, but military is not the only help we can or will provide. But as the Chinese people become educated and wealthier, they are going to see that the western ideas are dreams come true, they are going to want big families and all the freedoms we have, IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME. The Chinese people are brilliant and beautiful people that will be rise up after their country stalls in growth. Their youth are becoming more and more western and when they take over will turn away from their old ideals.

I have to agree that the lies are pretty obvious. We are told that a movement that has the support of the entire populace is being held in check by a conscript military composed of themselves. We are being told that although polls from Syria's enemies (Qatar) as late as March of this year (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jan/17/syrians-support-assad-western-propaganda) year say the majority of Syrians want Assad to stay, we are being told that the democratic elements are those who want minority rule or better yet rule by other countries who hold conferences on what the government of Syria should be with no input from really any Syrians (I guess the Berlin conference was democratic too). I know why the likes of CNN and Fareed Zakaria lie about such things: corporate cronyism, more profitable narratives, and an allegiance to the failing "Western Liberal Ideology" that can no longer be supported by facts but only lies and violence. What I don't know is why anyone would believe them.

history is in my estimation an excellent indicator of how long this man and his cadre will stay in power. examples, cambodia under Pol Pot, serbia under Slobodan Milosevic, rwanda when the Hutu massacred 1,000,000 plus, chile and Pinochet, Robert Mugabe, Omar Al-Bashir, Kim Jong-il, Than Shwe and the list goes on and on and on. all brutal dictators who killed thousands upon thousands of their people while all the world sat around talked a lot but did little else. when the u.s. has no economic, political or military interest we do not get involved to a degree that matters. sad, very much so but that is the reality of the world we live in. maybe someone can find some oil in syria and maybe just maybe big oil will then put sufficient pressure on this administration to do something for the sake of all the innocents. that is something i really doubt will happen and was more sarcasm than anything. truth be told i doubt anything will change there for a long time and not until other arab states are willing to put themselves and their military resources on the line. if that happens then i think the u.s. will play a supportive role at least and finally do something that actually makes a difference.

Saeed, given your tone I would guess you are currently residing in Iran or Pakistan. Though the name is common and likely a pseudonym. The opposition is Syria's own creation much like the revolutions in Egypt and elsewhere. It reflects long neglected ideals of the populace in general, and while Assad has shown some consolation it is (like so many other totalitarian minority governments) going to be too little too late. Time does not favor him or people with your view. Good Luck (Saeed) adapting to a changing world.

Does anyone realize that the Alawites are the bridge in the Middle East between Christianity and Islam? They fought on the side of the Crusaders in the First Crusade. They celebrate Christmas and Easter. They drink wine in church ceremony similar to the wine at confession in Christian churches. They also incorporate Zorastrianism in their faith and that Persian religion predates Jewish, Islamic and Christian religions. They are brutal and horrible. I give that, but what do you think will happen when the Muslim Brotherhood, the Taliban, the Wahabis and Alqueda take over? What of all the Shiites then? Has anyone considered the "Day After" Assad is killed? Think about it.

When do we start to realize that Assad is NOT Saddam Housain or Ghadaffi? He did not blow up commerical airplanes like Ghadaffi did with PanAM. He did not poison his own people like Housain did. Actually, Syria supprted the first Gulf War and was an ally of the United States, Jordan (our current ally) did NOT. Assad never wanted to be in power, he wanted to be an eye doctor. The only reason he came to power was because his brother died.

It is time we start denying the anti Syrian media in the U.S. What is the proof that the massacres were done by Assad's regime and not the opposition?? There is none. The media in the U.S, Anderson Cooperson first is just blind and reports what people like to hear without any proof. Who says that Assad is in control of his own country? Maybe his military is.

What would we do if people storm our nations capital? Sit idle? Of course not, we would fight back as Assad is doing. And honestly, Mrs Clinton? You should be ashamed of yourself. The only reason you don;t like Assad is because they are an enemy of Israel. Your own husband went to visit Assad's father in 1996 to thank him for his support in the Middle East. Assad is not an enemy of Israel, he withdrew from Libanon and the Syrian/Israeli conflict is a lot easier to resolve than the Israeli/Palestianian conflict because it only regards the Golan hights.

I hope Assad will survive and that there will be peace in Syria.

The top most fact is that genocide cannot be accepted by any means. This is atrocious: please consider any genocide beyond race, beyond religion. People of Syria are suffering, dying and starving: even women & children are among those victims. I do not care about dirty politics; I do not feel sympathy for blind religious notion.

Why UN is dawdling much valuable time for taking fruitful initiative, I do not know. Every minute, there is a probability that someone is dying brutally. We, all are human, let’s live as one. Where is the ethics of Western world!!! Please do some needful immediately. We do not want to hear about political intricacy nor so called diplomacy. Please save those innocent souls from this predicament.

Hey, pseudo-Muslims, I am telling you: you all are cowards, stupid & seduced from your religion. A brutal tyrant (Assad) is committing mass murder and most of you are just supporting him. What is the role of Arab league here: placid leaders of Arab league are so tacit on this genocide. Do not be blind, do not be a chauvinist to support mass murder. At least raise your voice to stop genocide. At least express your hatred to those beasts like Assad.

My deepest hatred is for Assad & all his mercenaries. Protest it & at least raise your voice for humanity. People like you, like me, like our children, like our kith & kin are dying, suffering, starving & screaming in agony. This is heart breaking, this is unacceptable and this is brutal.

This regime has servived 25 years of killings to their neighbor the Lebanese state under the supervision of the international powers and states, helping the International terrorism to florish in the region with the help of Iranian regime, Syrian and the Zionist regime, putting the region on the mouth of a volcano. The reality is that the Syrian regime through out the history maintained the killing policy against Sunnis and Christians, also enjoyed the Support of the Zionist and Iran as well for maintaining a calm borders and trade agreements. This politics is in the region for while since the killings of Queen Jezebel by the Zionist without a fair trial, and the Maronite brothers in Damascus, creating anti-Lebanese vision in the media and politics for centuries.

Nothing he said was on-topic and it's not clear what he's for besides killing innocents. This article is about Syria, where an uprising occurred without any assistance or prodding from anyone else. A country that is now killing its own citizens, a country where high-ranking soldiers are refusing orders to shoot at civilians and are defecting. A country where Iran is helping the regime be brutal towards it's people, showing their Shia values! Still Saeed manages to blame it all on Britain and the USA, a perfect example of a Muslim idiot!

The whole issue is how long can Assad hang on to power? The cross-sectarian alliances of regime sees cracks after defections of high-profile members.Towards the end it's just the Alawites left who will fight to the bitter end.
Another problem is there's dissent in the negotiation for a political endgame. The opposition wants Assad's immediate departure. Russia – an influential player – has vowed not to send more arms to Syria and could envision a "Yemen option". Assad's vice-president, Farouk al-Sharaa touted as a potential transitional leader, is a Sunni and the interior minister and the head of the General Security Directorate could play a role by reaching out to their Sunni brothers in the opposition and getting them on board. Then there might be a peaceful transition of power.

I am shocked how naive we have become. The proof is in the pudding. If the Syrian regime has been so innocent, fighting terrorists, why so many army commanders and soldiers have defected????? if that was the case, no one would defect. They would all be fighting for their country. However, they are defecting since they cannot stand the innocent massacres any longer. Additionally, all that is happening in Syria is not new. The whole middle east region is very familiar with the Assad massacres that have been going on for years. It is a Saddam Hussein deja vue (the same Baath system).

reply to guest re Saeed, you have no right to call anyone stupid. Remember Forest Gump's saying!
The light in which Saeed sees this situation is very different to USA and or British persons point of view.
UN has had no impact on the slaughtering of the Syrian people.
Russia and China don't care thus the UN fails as they are in it for oil and selling arms.
How would you solve the problem in Syria dear guest?
Calling someone stupid does not help.

Yes he is an idiot, but hey, so are a lot of people. The whole situation in Syria is a mess in my opinion. We have Russia and China blocking any major UN action against the regime, the US and Britain don't want direct involvement and the defections, while increasing, are not coming from the inner circle but from the oppressed majority. What we are seeing though is that finally other powers in the region are stepping up to take down a dictator. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are standing up to Assad and the rebels are becoming more and more organized. Soldiers are staying home and bleeding the already financially hemoraging government further. If Iran stops sending money, Assad is finished. If China or Russia finally decides to get off the sidelines, Assad is done. The question now is how much more damage will be done before he leaves and how can the world help to minimize the destruction Assad will leave in his wake?

I think another thing being left out here is what regime will come into power. Look at Libya and Egypt, the new powers there hate western thought more than anyone. They are all extremest muslims( look it up i dont have time or just go to bestgore.com). Before you hippies jump on the "kill asaad" band wagon remember why the innocent died in the first place. Al asaad did kill innocent people but he does not have the individual ideals we as Americans have(and rightfully so). He has the hive mentality and quite frankly its a rational way of thought(cut and dry). He is fighting terrorist look up the party that is trying to over throw him. They aren't down with kardashians or sports. Mock (if you please) my words if he gets over thrown it will become another Libya Egypt ordeal where innocent non muslims will die. Americans also killed innocent people no one is trying to over throw the government here.

Through it all, as painful as it was, your Jihadist mentality is evident. You see no problem in people being killed because of the alternatives—which you do not mention. Way to post intelligently!

The massacre of Christians at Our Lady of Salvation Cathedral in Baghdad on October 31 2010 gained extensive world-wide media attention. This Assyrian Catholic church was taken over by jihadis, and during the course of the several hours during which they controlled the church, the insurgents killed many of the worshippers, until the Iraqi army forces finally stormed the building.
I have been viewing reports from survivors of the massacre, posted on YouTube (here, here and here). From these, and earlier published reports (e.g. here), a picture emerges of the jihadis as religiously motivated people who engaged their victims in theological conversations about Islam, and justified their actions based on the Islamic sharia.
It is good to note well the testimony of these survivors, because there is a view, widespread among the secular professional terrorism analysts of Western nations, that contemporary terrorism is not essentially religious in nature, but is a political movement which exploits the religion of Islam to serve what are in reality political goals.
One of the dangers of this rhetoric is that it causes the Western media to overlook or 'filter out' incidents of terrorists attacking indigenous Christians (and other religious minorities), because these attacks cannot be accommodated in the category of 'political violence'.
However there was no political advantage to be gained by killing unarmed Christian worshippers in Baghdad. It was a purely religious act. Thus, according to the survivors, their attackers:
1.Cried out Allahu Akbar 'Allah is greater' each time they shot Christians.
    2.Called the Christians kafir 'infidel'.
3.Witnessed to the Christians that Allah is one.
4.Said it was halal (religiously permitted in Islam) to kill them, because they were Christians.
5.Rebuked their victims for 'worshipping' the cross and Christ and told them not to do so, e.g. they said, 'Don't worship the cross'.
6.Selectively targeted young men for killing: one of the attackers said 'Don't leave a young man alive.' This is in accordance with the laws of jihad, which stipulate that male captives can be killed. Authentic hadiths (traditions) of Muhammad report that when he eliminated the Jews from Medina, he had the men executed. (A Jewish boy called Atiyyah later reported that when an examination revealed he had not yet begun to grow pubic hair, he was allowed to live).
7.Declared that they themselves would go to paradise but their Christian victims would go to hell. They seemed to presume that they would be killed as an outcome of the seizure.
8.Refused to put a wounded victim out of her misery, by ending her life, although she was begging for this, on the grounds that it was fitting for her to suffer in this life because she was on her way to hell anyway.
9.Deliberately targeted Christian symbols for destruction, e.g. destroying crosses and a statue of Christ. (It was a tradition reported by Waqidi that Muhammad would destroy anything he saw which had a cross on it: W. Muir, The life of Muhammad. Volume 3, p.61, note 47.)

When can someone be called stupid, ignorant, witless, foolish, clueless, oblivious… that is the conundrum? Let’s take Saeed or his alter ego JAL. At what point can he be declared stupid, an idiot, a bigot, an hebete, a balourd, a sot? Do we go back to his birth and try to find out if he was dropped on his head at birth? Do we blame his parents, his grandparents, his great-grandparents and the whole tribe of Abraham? If his dog is stupid, untrainable, is it its fault or is it that it did not get proper training from a witless, stupid, ignorant, clueless, heartless, uneducated moron. What about his sheep—oh forget it. To apply descriptivism to a situation or not is a difficult decision.
