On GPS Sunday: Mitt Romney’s foreign policy, the crisis in Syria and Iran’s future

Coming up on Fareed Zakaria GPS on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET: My take on Mitt Romney and U.S. foreign policy; the Syrian crisis; Iran’s future; guns and America and a look at the U.S. economy.

Guests on the show this week include: Paul Wolfowitz, Tom Friedman, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Richard Haass, Paul Krugman and Ken Rogoff.

In our roundtable discussion on foreign policy issues, former U.S. deputy secretary of defense under President George W. Bush, Paul Wolfowitz, explains why he believes U.S. action over Syria would look very different from that in Iraq.

And New York Times columnist Paul Krugman discusses what he believes the U.S. Federal Reserve could be doing to boost the U.S. economy.

I’ll also be looking at the numbers and asking whether it’s time for the United States to rethink its gun laws.

His foreign policy is typical of Republican. The party promotes conflicts based on the economic interest of party members. There is nothing new he would say that has not been said from the time of President Ronald Reagan

Do you have any examples based on facts to back your comment?
Then, and only then, could we have a debate.

Promoting US interest in the region. Seeing those who do not follow US interest as a threat. Sees Russia as a threat or Russian interest as a threat. Has said that the Chinese are a threat in terms of US national security. Descrbing almost the same types of policies Reagan did during his fight against communism. Never is accepting the end of the cold war.

Add to that said that he is an admirer of the Bush foreign policy when this president is following the Bush foriegn policy. Honestly his foreign policy is no different than what the current president is doing.

        Jonathan
"Promoting US interest in the region". You have not said anything worrisome.
        However, the following needs work:
"Seeing those who do not follow US interest as a threat."
"Sees Russia as a threat or Russian interest as a threat."
" Has said that the Chinese are a threat in terms of US national security."
" Descrbing almost the same types of policies Reagan did during his fight against communism. Never is accepting the end of the cold war."
It is very difficult to understand all these accusations without any proof.
Your explanation should be something like this:
When Russia refused to help the Syrians by vetoeing the UN resolution, the Americans questioned their true purpose.

Fareed, i am disappointed to the point of tuning out when you have idiots like Friedman on a panel. He doesn't add anything to the conversaton. His "centrist" positions are mostly about self aggrandizement. Please don't help him in this pursuit. His presence reflects on you in a negative way. He's basically a hack who takes up more valuable conversation space.

After his central role in the murderous Bush administration, why is a deluded clown like Wolwofitz still invited by mainstream media to misinform the public? What does it take for a dangerous fool to be appropriately ignored? A class one felony conviction?

What Diane said about Friedman too. Say "Tom, suck on this".

JMJ! Why is Paul Wolfowitz included on your panel this morning! This damn neo-con, participant in the Project for a New American Century, should be hiding in shame for his promotion of the war in Iraq, not be given a forum for his hawkish opinion!

Wolfowitz crawled out from under his rock and for reasons that cannot be justified Fareed allowed him to be on the show – a pox on that coward traitor & shame on Fareed – who – 99.9% of the time, is the most brilliant man in media.

I find it interesting how members of the panel say with a straight face that choosing the leaders and governments of other nations is ethical. Imagine if other nations chose our government for us, seeking to fulfill their own interests - not the interests of American citizens.

Freedom makes us inherently vulnerable, especially when some seek to obtain money and power at all costs via means that are not aboveboard, and guns facilitate individual security since law enforcement cant be everywhere at once. Criminals will obtain guns and other destructive weapons regardless of laws and that puts the innocent at a disadvantage. I respect your facts, but they do not tell the underlying story. Even if it hurts our statistics, I would meet deadly attacks against me with force because I have the right to exist as much as every other human walking this earth.

Fareed – I am an avid and faithful viewer of GPS – and I read almost everything you write. My one bone to pick is having Paul Wolfowitz – or any other neocon like Cheney, Rumsfeld, Abrams, Perle, Kristol, and Bernard Lewis – on as a panelist! After what they did to this country, they do not deserve to contribute to the dialog on diagnosing its ills – they have no credibility.

It really disturbs me that CNN would allow Fareed Zakaria on his show Global Public Square to continually display maps of the Middle East that do not include Israel. It misinforms our children, disrespectful to an entire country and discredits the value of opinions stated on your station. Whatever your opinion is, it is just plain wrong! The owners and management of CNN and Fareed Zakaria should be ashamed of themselves and should apologize to your viewers.

Unfortunately, what you are viewing is a sympathizer of the grandest proportions who clearly does not present a show that is unbiased. Sad, but that might be the reason that CNN's president resigned, poor ratings due to its clear leaning to the left of center. Today was my last viewing of GPS because there is no reason to watch rhetoric.

Why is CNN hiding the protests and the killing of protesters in Bahrain. Across Bahrain they are in the streets daily. I am reminded of CNN's lack of coverage in Dec 2008 when Israel's IDF killed 1400 Palestinians in about 4 weeks.suffering only 10 of their own killed. Perhaps it is CNN's occasional blind eye that leads to mistrust, that leads to viewers choosing other news sources.

I don't understand why Paul Wolfowitz or Thomas Friedman would ever be consulted about foreign policy. Wolfowitz was the architect of the most disastrous American war since Vietnam, and Friedman was the mouthpiece used to drum up support for that war. They continue to think that it is the role of the United States to become militarily involved in the affairs of Middle Eastern countries and reshape them in America's image. It is proven not to work, and it does nothing but create sentiments of resentment around the globe.

I agree as Wolfowitz goes .After listening to him it is clear he has no insight into what goes on in the Middle East. Action in Syria will have the same disastrous results as the Iraq War. We do not really know who the insurgents are and they are likely Islamists. We should not be supporting Islamist anywhere like we are in Egypt

I am sorry to see certain of your recurring guests on GPS - individuals who have been discredited or all but indicted ....
I am referring specifically to your discussion segments about the Middle East, which often are people by neo-cons and Zionists whose hawkish views in support of a Greater Israel were discredited as an unfortunate manipulation of US foreign policy. Surely you can do better than Wolfowitz, Eliot Abrams, Kagan, Richard Perle, and other mouthpieces for Tel Aviv. At the least, should you have an equal number of academics or reporters representing the non-Israeli Middle East?

  22. Rogoff error: Gas Prices in Europe not 5 times USA

Ken Roggoff, said emphatically that Europe is five times the cost of the U.S. Not so, according to several searches I made. Of course it depends on States in the US and Countries in Europe, but none is over four times, and most of Europe seems to be about twice the price of California.

I wonder whether others picked up on this, as I've found more and more that Americans accept most any number that is spoken by an authoritative figure.

also, what they say about Friedman is true!! People in the government and the likes of him are leading the US towards a financial and economic abyss. the national debt is unbearable, this is the real issue, and what the democrats are going to do about it.

Why does Fareed give voice to an official who perpetrated a war fraud on the America public? Fraud is the knowing misrepresentation of a material fact with the intention of inducing reliance, and does induce detrimental reliance. Clearly, Wolfowitz was a leader in the group that took charge of defense policy, knowingly misrepresented the situation in Iraq with an intention of inducing Congress and the American public to support an aggressive war against Iraq. And we are still living with the costly result. Simply stated, it is War Fraud. As Justice Jackson asserted at Nuremberg (and for which Nazi officials were convicted and executed), deliberately initiating an aggressive war on false pretenses is a war crime. Fareed should have the courage to address the issue head on with this criminal.

You give credibility to Wolfowitz by putting him on your show. Did you really mean to do that and, if so, WHY?

Wolfowitz' neocon beliefs are not based in reality; he is a dreamer. How else could one expect to win "hearts and minds" and be showered with roses after invading and the populace of a foreign country? And then he was given control of post invasion Iraq; this power led him to dismantle whatever remained of the old Iraqi order without, however, the ability or wisdom to reestablish a new order.

There are centuries of Western imperialism in the Middle East but Wolfowitz was a a major player behind one of the stupidest, costliest and most destructive military campaigns there. Why shouldn't the people we wage war against hate us? I totally understand how this hatred leads to invading embassies. Just remember what we did in retaliation for 9/11. We don't like that either.

Sorry, but having this discredited person on your show reflects badly on the show and I, for one, have nothing to gain by having Wolfowitz and his ilk back in public discourse.

    SHAME ON YOU, F.Z.

Thanks for the suggestions shared on your own blog. One more thing I would like to convey is that weight loss is not information about going on a fad diet and trying to lose as much weight as you can in a couple of days. The most effective way to lose weight naturally is by taking it slowly and using some basic suggestions which can make it easier to make the most out of your attempt to shed weight. You may be aware and be following many of these tips, but reinforcing expertise never does any damage.
