Former U.S. President George W. Bush left many problems for Barack Obama, including a traumatized economy and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he also left behind a sense of uncertainty over the future of the Middle East and what might be in store for one of the United States’ key allies – Israel.
As Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney visits Israel, it’s fair to say that he does so during a period when the U.S.-Israel relationship has been swinging between ups and downs.
Soon after President Obama was elected, he started to exert pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to promote and endorse the two states for two people solution with the Palestinians, pressing the Israeli leadership to enter serious negotiations. Obama’s tenacity surprised the Israeli government – and many Israelis generally – as it ran contrary to President Bush’s policy of seemingly unlimited and largely unquestioning support for Israel’s policies with regards to the Palestinians and the peace process.
Yet, despite Israeli frustration, Obama persisted in the view that Israel should halt settlement activity in the West Bank in order to facilitate the negotiation process. Such demands were in line with President Obama’s stated belief that settlement building is an impediment to the creation of much needed trust needed between Israel and the Palestinians, the kind of trust necessary to lay the groundwork for peace between the two peoples. Unfortunately, the Netanyahu government only agreed to freeze construction for 10 months, creating further strains in the Israel-U.S. relationship – and between the two leaders.
The discord was compounded last year, when Obama made a foreign policy speech during which he called for peace based on a return to the pre-1967 Israeli borders with mutually agreed land swaps. The reaction of the Israeli government was to build more settlements, suggesting Netanyahu rejected this call.
There have been some ups as well as downs in the eyes of the Israeli public. A notable example was in 2009, when, according to a Newsweek investigation, the Obama administration armed Israel with bunker buster bombs, giving this country the capability to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities in the future. In addition, the Obama administration has regularly backed Israel at the United Nations, as well as helping fund the Iron Dome anti-missile system.
So, on balance, how have Israelis viewed ties between the two countries during Obama’s first few years in office?
Israeli public opinion has been split over the Obama presidency. Many argue that President Obama’s foreign policy generally, and his unrealistic vision and lack of understanding of the political dynamics of the Middle East specifically, mean ties have suffered significantly. Others, though, believe that despite the differences over the peace process, that the United States remains firmly in Israel’s corner.
Regardless, Obama clearly hasn’t achieved his big goals of securing peace in the Middle East while getting closer to the Muslim world, mainly because his policy goals and dreams weren’t in step with the desires and motivations of Israelis and Palestinians.
In my opinion, the hallmark of Obama’s first term as president and his relations with Israel has been his incessant efforts to bring about the message that to achieve peace, both parties need to make scarifies.
It’s unclear whether a Romney presidency would be any different for U.S.-Israel ties, and he will undoubtedly be distracted by daunting domestic economic considerations, including high unemployment and a soaring deficit. The question is whether the former Massachusetts governor has the charisma to transcend these challenges and shape an effective foreign policy.
To me, the Romney rhetoric and focus on tax cuts has echoes of the Bush era, and it’s hard not to worry that a Romney presidency would see the United States getting sucked into more of the sorts of dramas that Obama’s predecessor got drawn into.
Put simply, I don't think Romney is what Americans really need right now. Yes, from a purely Israeli point of view, Romney-Netanyahu relations might very well be warmer. But that does not and should not affect the way Americans cast their votes.
As U.S. voters head to the polls in November, their main focus will undoubtedly be on the economy. But for those interested in foreign policy, Barack Obama also has a genuine vision of peace for the Middle East. He should be given one more term to try to realize it.

The Arabs were deceived by the Balfour Declaration and the Jews exploited it. Jews are native to that part of the Middle East, and more Arabs immigrated into Palestine than Jews did, attracted by the economy that the Jews developed.
The Palestinian Arabs launched an ethnic war against the Palestinian Jews in 1920. Well before Hitler was even elected. A nation was forming there already... well before, the Holocaust.
What mandates the land of Israel to the Jews is that they formed it where they were the majority. They fought off all Arab armies which tried to destroy it. They were recognized as a country by the rest of the world. And, they've made something out of it. It's where they live.

Gone are the days when Christians had to watch out only for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) and its youth wing, Bajrang Dal, which are closely linked with the most influential Hindu extremist umbrella organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). With voter support faltering for the RSS’s political wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), moderate and extremist sections within the Hindu nationalist movement are blaming each other, and militant splinter groups have emerged.
Claiming to be breakaway factions of the RSS, new groups with even more extreme ideology are surfacing. The Abhinav Bharat (Pride of India), the Rashtriya Jagran Manch (National Revival Forum), the Sri Ram Sene (Army of god Rama), the Hindu Dharam Sena (Army for Hindu Religion) and the Sanatan Sanstha (Eternal Organization) have launched numerous violent attacks on Christian and Muslim minorities.
We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts.It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. India needs to be carved up into smaller independent states to be a viable economically and geo politically.
Similalry, Americans need to look at the relatonship with Israel from a business perspective. That is, what is the return on American Investment given the global politics have changed. Nothing personal, just a capitalistapproach. American taxpayers are suffering and US Debt is sky high. Americans cannot afford handouts anymore. The next elections will be exactly that. Those American politicians who have squandered American wealth and internatonal status away will be voted out of office.

I personally believe it would take a superpower to settle the dispute and bring about peace between Israel and Palestine. Unfortunately that superpower won't be the United States. The US has too much veted interest in Israel and with its unwavering pledge to support, defend and protect Israel's existence to any extent and by all means necessary, there seems to be no indication that the US will ever force Israel into a peaceful settlemet with Palestine. First of all Hamas and other opposition groups in the region would have to denounce violence against Israel and at the same time, recognize Israel's right to exist. Or the Palestine would have to defuse Hamas if it refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist. On the other hand, if Hamas is no longer in the picture, would a new Palestine leadership come to a settlement with Israel if Israel refuses to return East jerusalem and other disputed terrorities? And will Palestine negotiate with Israel if Israel continues to build on disputed land? This conflict is very complicated and that is why it would take a superpower other than the US to take the leadership role. The only superpower I could think of is Russia! But the way Russia has behaved in regards to the Syrian conflict, I doubt it would ever try to play a role in this conflict. However, I believe that unless this conflict is resolved, travel worldwide would continue to be risky and global terrorism would most likely continue for decades to come. Or perhaps it would take a courageous and progressive new Israeli leader to change the face of history by making historic concessions with Palestine and bringing this connflict to an end.

I personally believe the UN and the United States have failed the people of Israel and Palestine miserably. The UN and the United States need to be more forceful, deliberate and determine to bring this conflict to a hault and unless they do, don't expect Israel and Palestine to make progress. Peace and harmony is all good and dandy, but it seems markedly like willful blindness to believe that the very people who's stated goal is the utter destruction of Israel, if not America, will be willing to come to peace talks with the Israelis and come to "mutually agreed" land-swaps. Even if the President has a genuine vision for the middle east, if that vision is delusional, should we support it? Israel is a big purchaser of America weapons, it is an important intelligence ally, and it is a vital potential military staging point for any flashpoints in the middle east. Should we be willing to trade that away so that muslims who currently have all their hatred focused on Israel will stop hating us for Israel and turn their wrath and ire onto hating America and the infidels specifically? To presume that extremists will stop hating us because we support them against Israel is a rather tenuous belief at best.
I would like to take a moment in silence to respect the memory of all those who have perished in this terror war. May they rest in peace and god give them eternal abode in the kingdom of heaven. Amen/Ameen/Ah-Mayn. This has been the longest war in mankind’s history. There will be no conclusive end to this struggle. The causes of this war must be identified and isolated and addressed. While the settlement freeze was active, this show of good faith did not result in the Palestinians agreeing to talks with Israel. Only as the settlement freeze was ending did Abbas agree to talks, but only if the settlement freeze was extended. An understandably angry Israel refused to do so, and thus what was intended as a show of good faith further deteriorated trust between the two sides.

It is not my intent to hate. With the Palestinians in the wrong on many accounts, I cannot say it is easy to not hate, but that is what I strive for. In the end both Israelis and Palestinians deserve better – to live peacefully in their own states. But I am not afraid to call it like it is. I have criticisms of Israel, but they pale in comparison to the campaign of hate and violence that has been waged by the Palestinians.
Now let me address a few points you have made:
Terrorism – in this conflict I would be lying if I said Israel has conducted itself properly at all times. But it is the Palestinians that have made terrorism (which is to say deliberate attacks on civilians) their policy, not the Israelis.
Ethnic cleansing – Israel has a substantial Arab minority that enjoys full rights under law, seats in the Knesset, and members on the supreme court. While under Jordanian rule the West Bank's Jews were expelled (including from the Old City, where they had resided for thousands of years), and more recently a Fatah official indicated that a future Palestinian state will likewise be Judenrein. It is also punishable by death to sell land in the Palestinian territories to an Israeli or an agent representing one, which is interpreted to include all Jews.
Right of return – finding a solution to the Palestinian refugees will be one of the toughest challenges. Options include allowing return (at least to some), financial compensation, settlement in a future Palestinian state, or integration into their current host nations. The Palestinian refugees are deserving of sympathy, having been sorely mistreated by the other Arab states. The UN also has a separate agency for Palestinian refugees; unlike the one for all other refugees it exists to perpetuate the crisis. However, it should be noted that there were many more Jewish refugees from the Middle East than Palestinian ones and these have all been resettled without compensation, mostly in Israel.

The fundamentals here pertain to the theft of a country. Look at the Jewish population changes in Palestine over the last 100 years. The proof is in the pudding. How can an ethnicity grow from less than 10% of the total population to over 60% (Israel and the occupied territories) through foreign migration and not be guilty of ethnic cleansing? That, to me, represents a fundamental issue, from the Palestinian point of view. Everything else (terrorism, ethnic cleansing, right of return) is a consequence of that fact.
Palestinians, in turn, cannot turn the clock back and wish all Israelis be gone, even though more than half are born outside Israel.
As for Jewish refugees from Arab countries, it is true that there have been persecutions of Jews in some Arab countries; but, there has been persecution of all ethnicities in Arab countries during the 20th centuries. The difference is that only the Jews could take Aliyah to Israel after 1948. So, the moral equivalence made between Jewish and Palestinian refugees is false and a dead-starter. Besides, Jewish refugees still have the option to return to their homes in Arab countries. Palestinians do not have such an option.
In the end, Israel has painted itself in a corner, and nothing short of a democratic single-state, encompassing Israel and the occupied territories can be an accomodation that protects everyone's rights. Israel has effectively taken over the entire West Bank. There isn't an equitable division that can create another viable state for Palestinians. However, unless Jewish supremacy ends, no peace will have a chance to make a democratic nation from the peoples now occupying that land.

Why should Israel return to the pre-1967 ceasefire lines? Those lines only existed for 19 years, Jordan held the West Bank and E. Jerusalem (it doesn't want those back), and Egypt held Gaza and doesn't want it back. While those territories were held for only 19 years, Egypt and Jordan kicked every single Jew out of those lands. They were only gone for 19 years. That's it. They came back and developed their lands. Why are Arab communities allowed to grow, but not Jewish ones? East Jerusalem was even a majority Jewish and had been for over 100 years when it was captured and cleansed by Jordan. So, why are the '67 lines so great?

It appears to me that Muslims are the fastest growing segment of world society today. As others are withering away the Muslims seem to be rising again with their contributions as was the case historically when they ruled India and Europe and left behind a legacy of science, art, architecture, culinary et al. One only needs to go to Spain and India to witness this. As immigrants, it is a good thing to be aware of your glorious heritage and be connected with it. The Italian immigrants do it as do the Germans, Polish, Jewish, Hispanic and many other cultures. What really pleasantly surprised me was what I witnessed in the Middle East. A tolerant society that has come so far in a few years. Most importantly providing job and economic opportunities to all, Hindus/Indians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Europeans, Americans, Africans, South Americans, Chinese, and Russians etc. Never have I witnessed such openness and equal opportunities unless you go back to the times of Muslim rule in India and Spain.
