The military uncertainties of an attack on Iran

By Michael O’Hanlon, Special to CNN

Michael O’Hanlon is senior fellow at Brookings and author of The Wounded Giant: America’s Armed Forces in an Age of Austerity. The views expressed are his own.

Military strikes against the uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz and Qom, together with other possible targets related to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, could last for a single day and single sortie – or they could last for several days or even weeks. The latter possibility of course implies American participation too, and probably requires the use of air bases in one or more Gulf states as well, given the likely U.S. interest in using stealthy planes that at present don’t fly from aircraft carriers (though B-2 bombers could fly from Diego Garcia, for example).

So what is the likely effectiveness, and what are the likely risks, of each possible approach? I’d argue that there is there is significant unpredictability about how well an air campaign by Israel in particular would work – not least in terms of how much of the existing Iranian nuclear infrastructure it would destroy, and how long it might take Iran to recover (and that’s even leaving aside the huge issue of how Iran might retaliate).

First, though, it’s worth reviewing some basic information on previous, somewhat analogous, air campaigns, as well as the nature and locations of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In Operation Desert Fox, in 1998, the United States and Britain used 650 aircraft sorties and 415 cruise missile strikes, against 97 targets (11 WMD facilities, 18 command and control, 8 Republican Guard barracks, six airfields, 19 key regime sites such as Special Republican Guard barracks). They were reasonably effective. But of course we had been monitoring Iraq closely for nearly a decade by this point, on the ground and in the air, and Saddam Hussein had already abandoned his nuclear aspirations, we now know.

Or consider the Kosovo campaign of the spring of 1999. In the first month of the campaign, daily strikes averaged 5 against air defenses, 2.5 against lines of communication, and 4 against command and control (for the rest of the campaign, the respective figures were 3, 5, and nearly 7). Total sorties per day averaged 250 in the first week, and close to 500 in April. This campaign had a much different purpose, but underscored the difficulty of achieving major goals with a limited number of air strikes.  Initial forecasts of a quick Milosevic capitulation, in Washington and elsewhere, were badly off.

All this suggests that a single-day air campaign against a large nuclear infrastructure would be quite unusual in the annals of modern air warfare. To be sure, the United States sometimes uses more assets than perhaps required simply because it can. But typical attacks last several days and involve hundreds of sorties. Often, those attacks that were originally expected to take just a few days take weeks, as well. Nuclear facilities, meanwhile, are typically quite large, meaning that a planeload or two of ordnance will quite often be far short of what’s required.

Recent improvements in precision strike technology and GPS guidance make it quite possible that we could successfully drop numerous munitions into the same hole, digging deeper and deeper, even in bad weather and even if dust and other debris would make laser guidance challenging. In addition, it appears likely that we have tested this methodology fairly carefully, and it appears likely the Israelis could carry it out too.  Even in a single-sortie attack, successive planes reaching a target could perhaps therefore execute such a mission.

However, air defenses could be quite problematic for non-stealthy planes and perhaps even for stealthy planes, since the locations of attack can be anticipated extremely well.  This challenge would place a greater premium on a larger attack force, to allow attacks against radars and command centers and SAM launchers, and argues against the single-sortie mission. Recent precedents suggest that dozens of bombs could be needed to deal with an air defense system, especially since Iran’s enrichment facilities aren’t near its borders.

In addition, bomb damage assessment could be challenging. We may be able to dig deep with bombs, but we may not know if we were successful right away. Protracted examination of the site after initial strikes might be needed to confirm if any activity continued at those locations, meaning that the need for follow-on strikes might not be immediately apparent. This is especially true at the second uranium enrichment site near Qom. Again, this would be a downside of the single-sortie option.

All that said, we need to remain cognizant of the risks of even the prolonged attack scenario as well – going well beyond the well-known risks of Iranian retaliation, even greater internal Iranian consensus on the desirability of going nuclear after the attack, and the likely weakening of international sanctions after the attack as well. There could be a third enrichment site that we fail to attack simply because we don’t know it currently exists. The Iranians may bring in a group of civilians to “inspect” the site of the first attack, making follow-on waves difficult with the use of such human shields. (This would be risky but much less dangerous than how the regime used its own young soldiers in the Iran-Iraq war.) Air defenses could be repaired and/or relocated as well, while any attack involving hundreds of sorties or more would very likely involve the loss of one or more airplanes due to Iranian defensive action or simple aircraft malfunction.

We frequently talk pseudo-scientifically about the likelihood of a one to two year delay in Iran’s program after such a strike. I believe the range is more like 6 months to 3 or 4 years, given how hard it would be to predict the damage to Qom, as well as other uncertainties such as the possible existence of other enrichment sites.

All this means that there’s greater uncertainty in the outcome of an Israeli or U.S. air campaign against Iran’s nuclear facilities than frequently appreciated, whether it is carried out quickly or over a period of days or even weeks.

    Shut-up!
You will nowhere to be found, if war started.

The Afghan war-initiated by Jewish are still killing US.

The Iran war-much initiated and convinced by many Jewish around the World, will cost US many lives and will last much longer than the Afghan war.

Imagine, in Afghan, we the US have allies within Afghan tribes. But, in Iran we the US don't have One.

The Afghan war was started by Al-Qaeda, who were based in Afghanistan, when they attacked the WTC.

Actually the roots of this war trace back to the 1980s when we were giving them arms to fight off Soviet forces via "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" policy.

America cannot win a war and never won after WWII. Even in WWII, America was waiting antil 1944 for German and USSR killing each other to get weak. However, in 1944 Sovet army was in Poland already beating Nazis. America decided to ingage in Europe war theater as it was obvious that Soviet army could occupy entire Europe. America has incometent military and political establishment and afraids Iran.

We win the wars easily enough. Its the Nation Building at the end that we can't seem to get right. But that's not our fault – we're trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Next war, I suggest skipping the Nation Building altogether. Instead, I want to see caravans of loot being carried out of any county that messes with us. The present strategy of rebuilding defeated nations if pure fail. I'm always reminded of 'The Mouse That Roared': countries start wars with us simply so that they can surrender and get new infrastructure, foreign aid money, free healthcare and have our troops die trying to keep the Peace.

Stalin had purged his army of anybody that would be a threat to his regime.
When Nazi Germany attacked USSR, Stalin was not prepared.
The Nazi's walk right up to Moscow, and other large cities (St Petersburg)
It was the Americans and The British who supplied USSR that kept
from being overrun by The Nazi's.

No "One" country had won this war alone.
It took the Britsh, The Americans and The Russians to do it,
        along with other alied nations.

If Moscow had fallen, The Germans could have sent most of thier troops
to the Western front, maybe D day would never have happened
and all of Europe would be a Nazi concentration camp.

        Dont like America ?

is it not evident that roughly, more than a billion people around this world, having already experienced Islam/Allah/Muhammad, fought against it and discarded it for a good reason? hate jews just boycott jews made stuff

would include most computers, since Israel helped to develop the Intel Pentium chip, Windows MP, XP and Vista as well as Microsoft Office.

They’d have to boycott Google and cell phones developed in Israel by Motorola,

as well as voice mail and camera phones.

Thousands of products that were developed through technological innovations in Israel, in agriculture, aerospace, energy, pharmaceuticals, and bio-medicine would also be off limits. But naturally, the self-righteous boycotters and their legions of supporters aren’t interested in such banalities.

  2. Divest From War -- No War on Iran

    This is an interesting quote:

"They were reasonably effective. But of course we had been monitoring Iraq closely for nearly a decade by this point, on the ground and in the air, and Saddam Hussein had already abandoned his nuclear aspirations, we now know."

So they were "reasonably effective" against a non-existing WMD program? What kind of logic is this??

The same "logic" that got us into the mess of Iraq, and will get us into the mess that will be Iran, at least if the Israeli government has anything to say about it.

Israel's strategy has always been: drag the US military into fighting their wars, and get US taxpayers to pay for their bloated military so they can continue bullying the region.

And with Congre$$, bless their little hearts, in their back pocket, this works great.

On this one, though, they may have gone too far. And we the people (such a quaint concept) CAN stop this madness, if we can increase the cost to Israel of a preemptive military strike on Iran. This can be done nonviolently through a pledge to BOYCOTT ISRAEL IF IT ATTACKS IRAN:

    http://www.divestfromwar.org

Please sign the pledge, and spread the word.

Let's PREVENT the next war, instead of merely protesting it after the fact.

The people of the Middle East thank you in advance.

The question that you don't answer, of course, is the simple one. If you allow a bully (IRAN in this case) to continue to taunt neighbors and get stronger, will you have the fight the war when THEY are ready, instead of when WE are?

Is war with an islamic regime led by crazy men inevitable? Are they a threat to the US – either because they threaten Israel, because they threaten the region, or because someday they could threaten us directly if allowed to continue?
Is it ethical to continue sanctions that hurt the Iranian people in order to do little more than slow down the regime?

Something tells me divestfromwar.org doesn't answer these questions.

I think its better to stay the course with sanctions until Iran feels the pinch which it eventually will. Unfortunate innocent Iranians would have to suffer. War should always be the last resort and it would be outrageous to rush to war until all possible alternatives to resolve the conflict is tried. Let's face it, in order for Iran to build a nuclear bomb, they would have to test it and if the do, then the world community would unite and call for military intervention. There is still enough time to give peace a chance.

We have been doing sanctios for years. I wonder, Blah, when you think the time would be right. Perhaps when a nuclear weapon detonates in the US or its ally then it might be appropriate? We probably should have waited longer to attack Afghanistan, maybe more buildings should have blown up?

It makes no sense for anyone to attack Iran until absolutely necessary. The only thing they should be doing at this point is planning and preparing in case it becomes necessary. No one wants to shut off the oil flow from the gulf as the entire world is dependent on it as are their economies.

It would be much better for the world if the sanctions would work, the people of Iran throw out their government and bring in a new one that stops pursuing a nuclear program in exchange for a removal of sanctions. then they could start selling oil and make money!

Divest from war . . . This may seem strange to you, but Israel is an allie of the United States- and a good one at that. Israel has served American needs in the middle east since its inception. Israel has always been an active arm of US foreign policy and has allowed the US to insure its interests in that region. Please don't feed anyone the b.s. line of "Israel being a bully in the region. " Israel is no more a bully than any other country, and in act less so. Israel has the right to self defense and that is exactly what it does on a daily basis. It just so happens that Israel has been surrounded by enemies looking to create its destruction.

In the world right now, there is no more dangerous or rogue regime than Iran. The world is currently held hostage by the psychopaths in north korea and we allowed that to happen when we looked the other way on their nuclear journey. We cannot let history repeat itself here. We have tried going the road of the UN and negotiations. You can only negotiate for so long before action is required. War is never ideal and should always be averted whenever neccessary. Unfortunately, it does not seem like we will be able to do that here. TO TAKE NO ACTION WOULD BE IRRESPONSIBLE AND DETRIMENTAL TO BOH THE US AND IT'S FUTURE! THIS IS NOT THE COLD WAR W

Yes, Israel has been our ally for some time now but Israel need to do more to promote peace in the Middle East. First of all, the Israeli government need to stop building new settlements on dispute land and secondly, Israel needs to have open dialogue with those in Palestine that they consider their enemy, even if that enemy is Hamas. let's open dialogue and hear what Hamas has to say about resolving this conflict. I believe the world is very curious to hear both sides in a neutral place. I also believe the world will want to hear from Hamas if it will recognize Israel's right to exist. If they say yes, then that would be the first real progress in 35 years. I'm calling on the Israeli government to take the fisrt iniatiative and schedule a meeting with Hamas. The world will be listening and watching.

Paul, I respectfully beg to differ. Good allies do not wage war because big brother is near. Face it Israel was created for what purpose? To act as an arm of the American Military. American is in the decline as Europe is also, the meek shall friggin inherit the Earth. Time is coming to an end. There should be no war in Iran. G.W. lost our credibility, but imagine further if we did go, and Iran had already abandoned their nuclear ambitions as well. Saddam never said he gave up because he did not want to appear weak, what if that is happening again? However, you have your answer to your first question. The list included targets (Republican Guard Bunkers, SAM sites, Radar installations) that were hit by guided weapon systems.

Also, if we do strike and delay them for 6 months to 3-4 years, what happens when they rebuild? Are we just going to keep bombing them every so often, indefinitely? I'm reading the Powell Doctrine right now, going down the list, and I guess I'm just wondering what the endgame is. If we start down this path, how's it going to end?

That is a very good question, and the answer is simple: A country with damaged infrastructure needs time to repair that infrastructure, and Iran is relatively modern and dependent on electricity. They could just damage their nuclear program, but if they still have their facilities intact it won't take that long to rebuild. But if you take out some power plants and Railways and Highways and communications facilities, Iran would need years to recover and the destruction would likely cause a regime change.

Iran's nuclear program doesn't pose much of a threat. It's the unpredictability of its leaders that worries many. The Iranian people themselves are proud of going nuclear and pursue peaceful purposes. Israel and the US have to find a diplomatic solution to deal with Iran. Military actions wouldn't do.

Military actions will only make matters worse. The Iranian people do not engage in terrorism and even its government only finances proxies who then choose to carry out terrorist attacks. A military attack on Iran would most likely push these people over their ethical boundaries and force them to use unconvetional methods against an enemy that is far more superior in terms of firepower. THIS is how terrorism comes to be. What you see here, is terrorism in the making and it has happened before in basically EVERY country the US has invaded in these past 6 decades. You invade their countries, you easily defeat their militaries and then you complain about how they use terrorism to further their goals. If Iran gets attacked, I encourage Americans to stay away from the new twin towers because it is BOUND to happen again.

        Sorry Brother,

But the Iranian people actually tried that a few years back... We (the U.S. and the rest of the world) sat back and hoped that change would come of the people's actions and clamor for reform. The Revolutionary Guard and other Iranian paramilitary forces brutally suppressed the protests, keeping any would-be activists silent, for fear of another reprisal. The only way to get the Iranians out is to impoverish and weaken their government to the point that they can no longer control the Iranian people. Only then will democratic changes come.

It's not about killing or taking out those that oppress us. Dont you see? Iranians don't want any blood to be shed. They want to do this peacefully and on their own pace, not on US terms. If they wanted, they could have had a revolution back in 2009, but would that have solved anything? No. We have no leaders and even no goals, so the best thing for now is gradual change, not sudden and bloody revolution. We are sick of Western countries telling us to throw our lives away so that Western countries can benefit from it.

Members of hizbullah outside Iran are not Iranians but Palestinian (among others) arabs. Yes Iran supports this organization but it does not mean that Iran gives them the order to suddenly blow up 300 people. THe US has also supported COUNTLESS terrorist organizations, more than Iran could ever dream of. In fact, YOU were the creators of AL Qaeda and the Taliban, so don't come here branding us as terrorists while your hands are in deeper sh !t than ours.

shahin, we did not create al qaeda and the taliban, granted, we weaponized and trained the mujaheddin, who were later formed into al qaeda, but not by the US, but by bin laden, all because of his own personal vendetta with the US bc of the 1st gulf war, bc he was a saudi prince and instead of kuwait going to his country, they went to the americans for help. bc he wasnt able to capitalize on the war, he was angry! and about the formation, he basically brainwashed his recruits after there was no cause for the mujaheddin and told them that all of the middle easts problems were bc of the US. all this came to a climax when he ordered the terrorist attacks during 9/11. so, if YOU have read this, now YOU know the actual truth. instead of preach and insult by falsifying or twisting something up, tell the whole story.

Terrorists can only function if you can't find them and hit them back. Iran can't become a terrorist state without becoming utterly destroyed. The rest of the world does not want to attack Iran, including Israel. They would love for the Iranian people to take better control over their politicians so you have the time to develop your country the at your own pace. It's only the nuclear threat that makes war a possibility. You should understand that if it's a choice between a few Shia terrorists and a county with nuclear weapons and missiles, we'd rather face terrorists.

The GOP solution: Start a war with Iran (totally unfunded of course). Then get the poor people to fight/die in the war while giving the rich people "no bid contracts". Thus killing two GOP birds with one stone. Then use Iran's oil to pay for the war. And when the war is over, Iran will sell us cheap oil!! Just like in Iraq!!!!! Oh wait.....never mind.

The stress these outlandish beliefs have on you will only benefit the GOP. It's clear you are rabidly partisan, believing that those who don't agree with you have no empathy and are willing to kill people to satiate their greed.
However, the stress and angst that is yours will not only shorten your life and weaken your body but probably also affect your sp erm thereby reducing the chances of your ability to procreate. GOP members, however, knowing how crazy people like you are, will sleep fine and live long with large families. Thus ensuring their victory over your idealogy.

What he is saying is not far from the truth. When Iraq war started, government insiders and lobbyists were fast to start companies that took advantage of the war. Example: Diligence, LLC created by Carlyle Group founders, Barbour Griffith Rogers lobbying firm. Its board members are ex-high positioned government officers

        http://femvestor.blogspot.com/2012/01/glimpse-into-companies-social-network.html

And lets not forget New Bridge Strategy, a defunct company,

        http://web.archive.org/web/20040605092346/http://newbridgestrategy.com/

Whose purpose as stated in the website:

New Bridge Strategies, LLC is a unique company that was created specifically with the aim of assisting clients to evaluate and take advantage of business opportunities in the Middle East following the conclusion of the U.S.-led war in Iraq. Its activities will seek to expedite the creation of free and fair markets and new economic growth in Iraq, consistent with the policies of the United States Government. The opportunities evolving in Iraq today are of such an unprecedented nature and scope that companies seeking to work in that environment must have the very best advice and guidance available. The New Bridge Strategies team has been carefully constructed to fill that need.

The author notes examples of American air attacks but neglects to mention the two 100% successful Israeli single sortie attacks against Iraq and Syria. Both stopped nuclear programs cold and prevented dictators from acquiring the most dangerous weapons in the world. Saddam would likely be sitting in Kuwait and possibly Saudi Arabia right now if he had the nukes that ISRAEL saved the world from him having acquired. How would Assad's regime be affected right now if it had nukes. At a minimum, how much more dangerous would the civil unrest be if we had to worry about loose Jihadists acquiring them? Thank you Israel for stopping these scenarios in the past. Also, for all the morons who say that Israel guided America into Iraq and Afghanistan – you should actually look at historical records. The Israelis were not concerned about Saddam during either the first or second Gulf Wars. Those were Bush family feuds. All Israel got out of the first Gulf War was missiles raining down on its cities – and the second Gulf War brought a stronger Iran. Israel has been laser focused on Iran (and its proxies, Hizbollah and Hamas( for the last two decades – primarily because Iran has been sponsoring people who go and try to kill Israelis (and Americans). Iran and our dear friends in Saudi Arabia have been the main funders and sponsors of global jihadist terrorism and instability over the past forty years. This is factually accurate and needs to be processed by smart Americans in a manner that is not sensitive to their political prejudices or other personal opinions or prejudices.

      First gulf war.

When Saddam started tossing scud missiles at Israel,
George H Bush was scared of his coalition falling apart
he talked Israel "OUT" of retaliating by giving Israel
Patriot Missles, rocket launchers and trained crews.

Bush was affraid that if Israel got involved, the war may have ended
sooner, but would have been a disaster for all involved.

By the way, for anybody complaining about the Existence of Israel,
Kuwai had been a part of Mesopotamia/Iraq for thousands of years.
The British carved up the area and made Kuwait a nation/state because
thats where all the oil ships from.

The only Israelis that are focussed on Iran are the Prime Minister Natanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud. Military and intelligence leaders are warning against such an action. We are at the same place wher we were 10 years ago when Natanyahu was the Prime Minister. He is obssessed with Iran the same way Bush was preparing to attack Iraq since the day he took office notwithstanding 9/11. Afghanistan was a detour to Iraq.
Wars are easy to start but the outcome is never predictable. Wars are the main objective of the military/industrial complex. We are prepared to take away the safety net of our citizens in order to keep feeding the so called defence.
But the war threats by Israel and their proxies in the US are there to influence our elections.

No articles ever mention things like the extreme a nd permanent terrorism the U.S. and Israel would be facing at home and abroad after such a strike. No articles ever mention how such an attack is actually illegal, and how there would be repercutions with the rest of the world, possibly militarily. Or how other countries such as Russia or China may even assist Iran to defend herself from such an illegal attack.

Election are in November but a new president does not take office till January. Israel can defend them self for a month or so. I don't necessarily agree that Obama would be willing to lose his presidency than go to war, but whoever is president this next term will have his hands full. I think Israel would rather have Romney as president than Obama and if possible might time their attack in a way that might help Romney's chances of being elected. An Israeli- Iranian war will, to the best of anyone's efforts, end up dragging America into it, Iran will try to close the straits of hormuz. There is no way that this coming war could end quickly if maintained conventional, which I hope it will be. Once the war starts Iran will unleash its dogs of terror on Israel and the United States and the attacks will not only be in the US and Israel but also anywhere in the world an opportunity exists to attack. For Iran the greater and bloodier these attacks the better for them, they will want to show that even thought you can attack Iran and cause damage they have a capability to strike back and make it hurt. The world needs
to be ready if this war comes, it will not pleasant.

Ron if the Iranians unleash terroist attacks on American soil and kill innocent civilians, we will bomb Terhan and Iran's 3 largest cities to rubble. Without nuclear weapons. They would have nothing left. It would be terrible. Let's hope it never comes to that.

Have you ever heard of Operation: Linebacker and Linebacker II? Those were strategic bombing campaigns during the Vietnam War. Although they were not allowed to bomb cities, the Air Force dropped more bombs in those two operations than the entirety of WWII and Korea. As said above, if Iran tries to use terror against us, we will see a surge of patriotism not unlike the one that directly followed 9/11. Iran would become a footnote in history.

The problem with wars is that no one can predict what will happen. The author is right. I think that Iranians have the bomb ( they are not stupid) easily gotten from North Korea. If Israel becomes too arrogant they just may sign their own death warrant. What people seem to overlook is that China and Russia would benefit greatly by Israel's destruction , oil flow interruption which would knock the US right out of the imperial game. Looks like a good scenario for a nuclear war that will kill millions. All the warmongering and the proxy war in Syria is leading in that direction. Are our leaders sane ? Personally, I think they lost touch with reality.Soon ,the financial bust will elevate the stakes. Scary.

The real question is how do we provoke Iran to strike first. I hope that my relatives in Jerusalem can figure that one out. Should Israel strike first the world would condemn them and make us Jews out as the bad guys. Israel needs to support the sanctions and find a way to make Iran and maybe with the situation in Syria and with Hezbolah will force an attack on Israel which will give Israel cause to bomb Iran and Syria. Technically Israel and Syria are still at war as no peace treaty has ever been signed and a cease-fire is all that is in place at this time. Israel will loose in the court of public opion should they attack first.

biggest threat to USA is Islam ,

Jew hatred in Islam is an essential foundation to the Islamic belief system that Muslims cannot seem to be able to rid themselves of. Jew-hatred masks an existential problem in Islam. Islam is terrified of the Jews, and the number-one enemy of Islam is the truth, which must be constantly covered at any cost. It does not matter how many Muslim men, women, and children die in the process of saving Islam’s reputation

muslims in america cannot be trusted ..do not employ muslims , there will be another 9/11 type attack by muslims on the USA again.. do not wait round them up and put them in ww2 style camps , Islam is vile

Not exactly...Christianity was originally started by Jews for Jews. It grew organically from Judaism and was based largely on the "modern" Jewish teachings of that era. Islam was started by a pagan who spent time with Jews but turned on them when they wouldn't follow him as a Messiah. Islam takes parts from many other religions, including Judaism, but claims true Judaism and Christianity are really early Islam.

The Quran demands Muslims to kill non-Muslims “wherever you find them”. “Smite non-Muslims’ neck and fingers before killing them” (just for being non-believers of Islam, irrespective of race, language, creed, colour, and weather man, woman or child), “deceive and plot against non-Muslims”, “slay infidels (kill non-Muslims)”, “do not take orders from non-Muslims”,

“Muslims are not to be friends of non-Muslims”; the list is long and could be found in the Article, “Is Islam Practical?”

The Quran cannot possibly be from a ‘Real True God’ to any rationally thinking person; but surely a doctrine inspired by Satan?

INDIA: On a Goat and a Stick:

The problem with India is that is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. You can only take it so far based on symbolisms of a goat and a stick with a skinny little man aka gandhi banging boys at night and spinning wheels during daytime.

Iran on the other hand has a rich culture and a legacy that will make India look like dark ages.

It is not unknown for them to name their children Shiva Lingam (God Shiva's s@xual organ) or Rama Lingam (God Rama's s@xual organ). You do realize that this is Iran we're talking about, right? The same Iran that's promised death to all Jews since 1979. The same Iran that refuses to talk about where they are going with their nuclear plans. The same Iran that continues to finance, train, and supply terrorist organizations all across the world. Iran is not some innocent country, its leaders are evil, evil men. And they must be stopped. I would prefer to avoid a war, but if one must come, I overwhelmingly support a policy of extreme overkill. If we go to war, the U.S. military should use every non-nuclear/radiological/biological/chemical weapon we have, and make sure there is no possibility of a counter-attack.

      Just my two cents.

Iran has the largest jewish population in the entire Middle-East, apart from Israel. 20,000 jews call Iran their home and they live in complete peace and tranquility. Khomeini himself issued a fatwa that prohibited muslims from harming jews and called them a holy people that needed to be protected.

"Israel's existence is an "insult to all humanity," Iran's president said Friday in one of his sharpest attacks yet against the Jewish state, as Israel openly debates whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program."
"Today, confronting the existence of the fabricated Zionist regime is in fact protecting the rights and dignity of all human beings," said Ahmadinejad, with a black and white scarf many Palestinians wear around his neck.

Palestinians are the newest of all the peoples on the face of the Earth, and began to exist in a single day by a kind of supernatural phenomenon that is unique in the whole history of mankind, as it is witnessed by Walid Shoebat, a former PLO terrorist that acknowledged the lie he was fighting for and the truth he was fighting against:

“Why is it that on June 4th 1967 I was a Jordanian and overnight I became a Palestinian?”
“We did not particularly mind Jordanian rule. The teaching of the destruction of Israel was a definite part of the curriculum, but we considered ourselves Jordanian until the Jews returned to Jerusalem. Then all of the sudden we were Palestinians – they removed the star from the Jordanian flag and all at once we had a Palestinian flag”.
“When I finally realized the lies and myths I was taught, it is my duty as a righteous person to speak out”.

One would have to be blind not to see that Israel is behind this type of war drum rolling. None of us were born yesterday. It is time for us to face the possibility that Israeli spies may have infiltrated our government from top to bottom. Until we face this very real possibility, we are sitting ducks. The great majority of these spies are Ivy League educated and easily blend in. They look like us. They dress like us. They talk like us. It would be an easy feat for them to gather information (a/k/a/ “dirt”) on high ranking officials and other key people and then use that information to control them – for the interests of Israel and against the interests of American citizens. If anyone, especially anyone in the media, dares to examine this danger, they are immediately muzzled, labeled “anti-semite” and professionally neutered. Israel is a miniscule nation halfway across the world and consisting of only 8 million people. One has to ask how can it dictate so much of our foreign policy and garner so much power over our elected leaders? As citizens, we must begin to ask these questions and not stop until we are given proper answers.

Don’t forget that Israeli spies have also successfully convinced fundamentalist Christians that they are so special that the end-of-times could very well happen during their lifetimes. And of course for that to happen, there must be war and mayhem in that region. Little do they know that the Israelis are laughing at them behind their backs, calling them the fools they are for freely giving away their blood and treasures for this religious fantasy.

If US understand the difference between 21st century and 1960s WWII, they will stop sanctions and increase their influence in Iran by money and business rather than old carrot and stick military based policy since the time for this policy is expired and the more the West continue this way the more their economy goes bankrupt and the more they will loose their global influence. US needs to learn from China, India, and even Russia on how to control Iran regime.

Iran would be hurt by a joint operation by Israel and the USA....however....Iran has the capability of protecting itself and of inflicting damage as well as itself being damaged. It would not be a pleasant operation for either side. It would be a dumb move on the part of Israel and the USA. Scars would be left for a long time but Iran would recuperate and I would not give you a single dime for the future preservation of Israel itself When you play with FIRE....you eventually get BURNED!

If I may, why must we use airstrikes? Why not use our massive stockpile of Tomahawk missiles? The Iranians can't block them, and they are extremely effective and accurate against targets. Just look at how they were against Libya! We could take out their air-defences and command structures before sending in the planes to mop up the rest, ultimately sparing lives and making this conflict a heck of a lot easier!

Wow...you make it sound so easy. Just like that. This is not a video game. This is real life. There are painful repercussions (for us and for Iran) that will follow any type of aggression. Just as we are a sovereign nation, so are other nations, including Iran. Any person, system, or nation that engages in double standards, hypocrisy and selective leniency automatically discredits itself. I am a proud American, and I would like to remain proud of being an American.

why Iran would just up and decide to fling a nuke at Israel, knowing full well that it would be signing the death warrants for it's population for ZERO gain.

Ahmadinejad and the Leadership Of Iran belive in suicide and would risk their country for the 12th Imam
    and the Islamic Prophecy.

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been cited by various news sources as not only believing in the eventual return of the Mahdi, but that the return is near and that it is the responsibility of the Iranian government to prepare the country for his return.

A strike does not have to destroy the facilities, just bury them by bombing the entrances and air shafts. Inside the technicians without food or air or water will eventually run out before they can be dug out, and the potential for fall-out might make the Iranians fearful of trying to dig them out.

Iran does not have a large education infrastructure and it doesn't have that many people able to operate a reactor. Seeing bombs coming into their country could have a supreme effect on the people. As long as there were no physical consequences Iran is able to posture and talk tough. Once there are a few well-placed holes in the ground where facilities once were, Iranians might feel very differently about their governments foreign policy decisions!

We continue to be of the opinion that India is a zero sum event in history and that a break up of sorts is the optimum way to maximize its potential for the people. The current events in India reinforce our belief that the inevitable implosion of India has begun and the beginning of the end state is upon us. Whether that will be nirvana that most of us believe it will, is yet to be seen. But this we will say. This defragmentation of India will unleash boundless opportunities and uber economic demand that will be beneficial to US and Europe and help pull them out of current recessionary malaise. We pray for the events to unfold peacefully and in a harmonious manner for the people of India and its neighbors.

Face it, Iran's leaders have been bent on the eradication of the Jewish state of Israel, if you are any kind of intelligent human being, and are up on current, and past events, Iran DOES want Israel to go away. And its because they feel like the region was stolen from the Palestinians, not to mention for religious reasons also.
I agree Israel is aggressive and overstepping here, but Iran DOES pose a real and very viable threat to the humans who live in Israel. Remember, in Israel, there are Jews, Muslims, Americans, Indians, Chinese Russians, ect. ect....no matter what happens, if this war does happen ( and I believe its just around the corner) there will be more innocent people die from the war, then the politicians who decided to start it, so in the end, the people who NEED to die, will remain alive to continue to beat the drums of war in the future.
The animal world is at more peace than humans, and we call ourselves the superior species??? In actuality, humans are more of a threat to one another than anything else on the planet. We are destined to kill ourselves off, sooner or later. Why do we need nukes?? Thats an easy answer, to kill one another, like guns, they are no good for anything but destruction, and as a race we continue to build them. What kind of intelligence is that? To me, that just proves that the human race is doomed, sooner or later, one day, the nuclear holocaust WILL happen. Its inevitable as long as the weapons of destruction are available to humans.
I might be stupid and dumb, but I know that we are in over our heads with this war obsession we have to annihilate each other, and its not getting any better. Mark my words, before the end of the year, 100s of thousands of innocent people will be murdered by the rich arrogant politicians with their fingers on the doomsday button. It's coming, its just when exactly. If anyone thinks its not going to happen, your more stupid than me. The world leader WANT this war, its just that none of them want to be blamed for starting it. In the end it wont matter, because the elites will be in their bunkers under a mountain somewhere, and us expendable humans will be vaporized in the reign of nuclear warheads raining down all over the world. Its coming soon to a city near you!! 2012 the year the world ends??? Very possibly!!!!!!!

I think Obama is never going to get involved, he is not going to help Israel now due to elections, or even after elections. Israel has every right to defend their nation. Being a small nation and having to be surrounded by enemies while the U.S. can't talk because their across the Atlantic. One nuke is bad for a small nation like Israel, the casualities. Ouch.
But, you see they have an enemy who hates Israel and is soon to have nukes, and nobody thinks they don't want to wipe them off the face of the earth. Inspite of deceiving Americans by people like CNN's Mr. Fareed Zakaria saying that:

    a) Iran is a rational actor

    b) A Nuclear armed Iran can add to the stability of the region by acting as a counter balance to Israeli nukes, and even Indian & Pakistani nukes MISLEADINGLY portraying friendly India & Pakistan as adversaries to Iran!

    c) By being the VERY FIRST journalist of repute(?) to MISLEADINGLY claim that an US & Israeli attack on Iran will be seen as YET ANOTHER front of the US war on Islam, something NOT even radical Muslim countries have claimed. On the contrary, the Saudis have been urging US to attack Iran, by saying that we need to "chop the head of the snake".

The only possible motive of Mr. Zakaria’s MISCHIEVOUS assertion…..is thwart any potential attack on Iran by COVERTLY influencing “naïve” American public opinion, and if an attack did indeed take place stir up greater problems for America all over the world incl. amongst the millions of Muslim Diaspora right here in the west.

A notable reference to such an eventuality can be seen from the ASTOUNDING statement by a senior Pakistani diplomat (NOT just another Pakistani!) Pakistani High Commissioner to the UK Walid Shamsul Hassan who warned of Terror on the streets of London if the US drone attacks continued on his nation. He said “ There are over 1 million Pakistani Diaspora in the UK and they can make the roads of London less safe” (ref: Sunday Times Sept 8th 2008), and in eye opening 4 part BBC interview (ref: You Tube Oct 10th 2008).

So, even as a danger from nuclear armed radical Iran, and self declared Islam bomb possessing Pakistan (which in the words of Richard Clarke is adding to 100+ nuke stockpile like SAUSAGES!!!) remains, the REAL GREATEST DANGER is US complacency.........of doing nothing at all........and this is fed by internal elements such as Mr. Zakaria an active mouth piece for Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iranians, the Pakistanis and ofcourse the Muslim Brotherhood.

With credible reports that President Obama is considering Mr. Zakaria for the position of US Sec.of State in his second term, Americans can only pray for our country's safety!

India is playing a double game with Americans in Iran as well as Afghanistan. We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country and minorities marginalised. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts. It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population.

Inspite of deceiving Americans by people like India's Mr. Manmohan Singh saying that:

    a) India is a rational actor

    b) A Nuclear armed India can add to the stability of the region by acting as a counter balance to Israeli nukes.

    c) By being the VERY FIRST country of illrepute(?) to MISLEADINGLY claim that an US & Israeli attack on China will be seen as YET ANOTHER front of the US war by saying that we need to "chop the head of the snake".

The only possible motive of Mr. Singh's MISCHIEVOUS assertion…..is thwart any potential attack on China by COVERTLY influencing “naïve” American public opinion, and if an attack did indeed take place stir up greater problems for America all over the world incl. amongst the millions of Chinese Diaspora right here in the west.

A notable reference to such an eventuality can be seen from the ASTOUNDING statement by a senior Chinese diplomat (NOT just another Chinesei!) who said “ There are over 1 million Chinese Diaspora in the USA and they can make the roads of New York City less safe”

So, even as a danger from nuclear armed radical China, and self declared Buddhist bomb possessing China (which in the words of Richard Clarke is adding to 100+ nuke stockpile like SAUSAGES!!!) remains, the REAL GREATEST DANGER is US complacency.........of doing nothing at all........and this is fed by internal elements such as Mr. Singh an active mouth piece for Shiv Sena and RSS..

With credible reports that President Obama is considering Mr. Manmohan Singh for the position of Butler in Chief of Harriman House, Americans can only pray for our country's safety

An attack on Iran would be total folly. The US could not handle Iraq with almost 30 million people. Imagine A WAR WITH A COUNTRY OF 80 MILLION AND GROWING. There is no proof that Iran has or is trying to get nuclear weapons. Iran has a right to nuclear energy like any country.Always remember weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Yeah where were they.

Population does not mean anything when it comes to the military might of each country. Both Israel & the US have much more advanced weapons systems, etc.. than Iran does and it would be a short war just as it was with Saddam.

If the Israelis go it alone, the Iranians will retaliate against both Israel & all of the US military installations in the Middle East so the US should be involved right from the start and add their military might to that of Israel and make this attack on the nuclear installations a very powerful one, so as to not start a prolonged war. I am quite sure the Israeli's have been working out a plan of attack with the US against Iran for quite a while now and have drawn up many possible scenarios. If Israel waits much longer it will be exactly like North Korea all over again. Iran is merely stalling.

It was only last week that Iran, once again, threatened the very existence of Israel. It's like "here we are, come and bomb us because we know you won't". The time is very near.

It is sad how countries with the ability to promote peace seem to be always at each others throats. Sometimes i wish you people could see the tragedy that befalls so called third world countries as a result of the actions of your leaders. I pray for the day when people around the world will realise we are not smart and cannot save ourselves, and change our livestyles before it is too late. LOVE, PEACE, JOY IN THE HEART are wonderful, definitely much better than creating bullets to massacre/lynch each other. Finally i would like to advise yhose who hate based on colour, race to desist from it. LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR. Who is your neighbour? it is your fellow mankind whom you need to show love

Very true, peace, Islam is in human "HIS DESIRE" reach, but dependent on choice, only thing human own in life, of human, a gift of our Lord, Allah, Al , the La, limit H, most high or Absolute 360* and made human "HIS" assistant on earth. Cause of disunity and mayhem is hinduism, denial of truth absolute by divide of truth absolute in to two or more by hindu's ignorant s to manipulate and control rest of the humanity by hook or crook, justified not but truth but hindu Judaism, criminal secularism, borne not of spirit but of hindu soul, filthy desire. It is good to wish love, submission to truth absolute and care for each other but, truth absolute and hinduism, denial of truth absolute do not mix, like oil and water, It is nothing but a wish to have peace, Islam among humanity in presence of hinduism, denial of truth absolute.

    Well the outcome ...Could be....
Total war in the Middle East....If Israel were in ANY of these operations..that would be it for the Middle East..Every Muslim \Arab nation in the Middle east would declare war on Israel...and America as well...
Worse still would be if Russia became involved because they are supporters of Iran and Syria...What would have been a mission to End Irans Nuclear Bid..Could turn into ...World War Three....and that would end very very very badly for every one...The World over......In our Mad rush to rid one nation of Atomic weapons and safeguard Israel..We set in motion events that...I think St. John wrote about on the Island of Patmos....
No easy solution to Iran..exsept perhaps Black OPS....Make it look like an accident..you know a Nuclear Accident....It could be better than ....Every American And Russian City blown off the face of Earth and the Middle east a smoldering heap....The only ones left perhaps if they did not party on that fatefull day would be China..But they would be left with No-One to trade with and radiation spreading across the globe....
Yep....I would say concentrating on Iraq for the last ten eleven years...was a HUGE MISTAKE...HUGE...But America has got to do what America has got to do....Most times it makes no sense whats so ever..But is sure makes Americans feel good about America........and that ..Is realy what 6 Billion human lives on the PLANET EARTH IS ALL ABOUT...RIGHT ????

or is it the Hoki Poki...after all

let's find a way to break up the iran/russia/china/ alliance quick or this might get ugly fast! do any of you realize what this team up is gonna do to us? once they hash out some of the regional disputes who do you think they will look at next? they all have enough chutzpah to make a first move if they are feeling confident enough. our defences wont quite collapse over night with proper warning, BUT they won't hold forever either. the combined might of those powers should make us a little nervous.

Israel has to attack Iran's nuclear facilities very, very soon. It is highly likely that Israel & the USA have already worked out the various scenarios already as the Iranians will retaliate against both Israel & all of the US military facilities in the Middle East. The US could help Israel make this attack an extremely powerful one and it would be quick as opposed to a long, drawn out war. If Iran was to tell you that your country should be wiped off the face of the Earth, over & over, you would attack Iran with a pre-emptive strike. Once Iran has nukes they will completely destabilize the entire Middle East. WE do not need a nuclear war.

our weakness is our lack of followthru. this will never be over because we do not take and HOLD what we conquer. if we step in they whine because we hold the leash tight, if we leave them alone they whine because we don't step in so we are pretty much stuck with losing either way. we might as well gain something for ourselves and leave them alone and work on making ourselves a better and more advanced (technologicaly/and culturaly) society so when the smoke clears the survivors want be with us willing instead of being conquered.

This analysis amounts to no more than totally idle speculation. Israel only needs to damage the sites sufficiently to make them inoperable, they don't have to destroy the entire complex and the leaking radiation will keep the Iranians away. Underground facilities could be made dysfunctional simply by bombing the entrances. The real question is, is Israel capable of such an attack without any major losses. And can it stop Iranian retaliation with further attacks.

Pride and nationalism in Iran would be smashed by an attack by Israel, this along with the poor economy and Iran's relative isolation, could very well topple the regime, as the reality of foreign bombs falling would strike at the Iranian people's sense of safety.

If we are going to launch a military attack on Iran, I would like to see the President go to Congress and request a declaration of war. Is that so unreasonable?
