Does world want Romney or Obama?

By Bruce Stokes, Special to CNN

Editor’s note: Bruce Stokes is the director of Global Economic Attitudes at the Pew Research Center. Full survey results are available here. The views expressed are his own.

At the Republican National Convention scheduled to take place this week and the Democratic National Convention beginning September 3, Americans will notionally be choosing their candidates for president of the United States. Effectively they will be deciding who will be the leader of the world for the next four years.

The world’s citizens get no say in this choice. Nevertheless, people outside the United States have definite opinions about Obama and some of the key issues in the campaign: about the state of the economy and what to do about it, climate change and how they think Washington should treat them.

Neither the GOP nor the Democratic nominee is likely to shape his electoral message to the American people to please foreigners. In fact, if he did, it would probably hurt his chances of winning.

But either challenger Mitt Romney or incumbent President Barack Obama is going to be the next U.S. president. And experience shows that the success or failure of his foreign policy may depend, in part, on how it is perceived abroad. So what people around the world think going into the final two months of the U.S. presidential campaign does matter, if not on November 6, then for the next four years.

Europeans have had a four-year love affair with Barack Obama: 87 percent of Germans, 86 percent of French and 80 percent of the British have confidence in Obama, according to a 2012 poll by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes project. In each case this is higher than public confidence in their own national leader. And 92 percent of the French, 89 percent of the Germans and 73 percent of the British want Obama reelected.

In the long run, if Romney wins, none of this may matter, as Europeans get to know him. But, in the short run, it could matter. A 2005 Pew Research Center survey found that in Britain, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands, strong majorities said the 2004 re-election of George W. Bush led them to have a less favorable opinion of the United States. A newly-elected Romney administration may have to contend with a similar European reaction if the popular Obama is defeated in what will come to a surprise to many of them.

But an Obama defeat may not play as poorly in the Middle East – in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia – where a median of only 29 percent approve of Obama and a median of just 25 percent want him reelected.

Elsewhere, foreign reaction to an Obama defeat could be mixed. In Asia, 74 percent of Japanese have a favorable view of the current U.S. president and 66 percent want him reelected. But Obama’s popularity is only 38 percent in China and only 31 percent there want him to get another term.

Similarly, in Latin America, while 68 percent of Brazilians like Obama and 72 percent want him reelected, only 42 percent of Mexicans are well disposed toward the current U.S. president and just 35 percent hope he has a second term.

Foreign expectations of the next American leader can, in part, be discerned from their current policy preferences and their judgment of the Obama foreign policy.

At a time of global economic turmoil, people outside the United States look to the U.S. president for strong economic leadership. Those who like Obama and want him reelected tend to approve of his handling of global economic problems. Those who dislike him disapprove. How they would feel about Romney’s custodianship of the U.S. economy, and by extension that of the global economy, is unknown.

Romney has charged that America has lost stature abroad during Obama’s presidency. And some foreign perceptions tend to bear out that observation. In 2008, across 14 countries surveyed by the Pew Center, a median of 44 percent named the United States as the world’s leading economic power, while just 22 percent chose China. Today, only 36 percent cite America, while 41 percent believe China is in the top position.

But the GOP candidate has also espoused fiscal austerity at home, while criticizing fiscal profligacy abroad. This runs counter to majorities in seven of the eight European nations the Pew Research Center surveyed this spring who oppose further belt tightening in their home countries. Notably, only in Poland did people support more austerity. Interestingly enough, it was Poland that Romney chose to visit in late July.

On foreign policy issues, foreigners have long complained about American unilateralism. They think Obama has acted unilaterally, much as they criticized his predecessor George W. Bush for such actions. That criticism has softened a bit in Europe and China during the Obama tenure, but it has worsened in parts of the Middle East. And it is largely unchanged in Japan.

It remains to be seen how foreigners will react to Romney’s promise of even stronger U.S. leadership abroad, in which Washington will no longer “lead from behind.”

On specific international issues, a median of 56 percent in 20 countries surveyed outside the United States in spring 2012 think Obama has not been fair in dealing with the Israelis and Palestinians. During the campaign, Romney has openly sided with the Israelis, a policy stance that is not likely to be perceived any better than Obama’s actions.

On climate change a median plurality of 48 percent believe Obama has not taken significant steps to deal with global warming. Romney says he doesn’t know the extent to which climate change is even occurring or whether it is caused by human activity, a view that is not likely to lead to the additional “significant measures” seemingly desired by global publics.

Over the next two weeks at their national political conventions Republicans and Democrats will hone their electoral messages aimed at domestic voters in the November presidential election. That is to be expected. But they need to keep in mind that the policy positions they stake out in the heat of an election campaign resonate abroad. And, whoever is the next U.S. president, the success or failure of his foreign policy will, in part, depend on what foreigners think.

If you feel that way, then by all means please don't vote. The rest of us, however, believe in the democratic process and it's ability to affect change. And, in my view, not believing in democracy is rather unpatriotic. If you really want to try a place where elections don't matter move to Somalia or Russia. They might suit your mindset.

Jake is partially right at least. If you are naive enough to believe that democrats care about people and republicans don't then you are a fool.

If you look at both parties they behave in a way that I would not tolerate of my friends and family. Why should I trust either one?

Who to blame? Not our politicians....it's your neighbors and their friends. THe country has become so polarized it is now common to say things like:

Rpublicans don't care about people, democrats do!
Obama wasn't born in this country!
        Coservatives are selfish and greedy!
Libtards are stupid and just don't get it!
Keynsian economics are the ONLY way to help the economy!
        Obama is buying votes!

How do we expect our politicians to behave if we each only see one possible solution?

Republicans are the party of the rich, democrates are the party of the poor.

Therefore, the republicans want to make as many people as possible rich, by supporting buisnesses that employ the middle class and bring wealth to the rich. They want you to have a job and be successuful, because if you do, you are more likely to keep them in power.

The democrates want as many people as possible to be poor, because they are rich and want to stay in power, and the fewer people who work, are successful, and make money, the more people there will be living on the government's generosity and voting to keep them in power.

So, which millionare will you vote for this year? The one who would love to make you a millionare as well so that you support his regieme, or the millionare who wants to keep you as poor as possible so that you continue to support his regieme?

It isn't about who loves the poor or who loves the rich, but who would love to help you be rich or who would love for you to be poor.

If they were dentists, the republicans would be handing out toothbrushes while the democrates handed out candy. One makes you better – even if it is less fun, while one makes you happy for the moment, but a long term paitent in the long run.

So, if you are poor and happy or super rich and want power over the masses enslaved to your largesse – then be a democrate.

If you are rich and proud of your success, or middle class and hoping someday to be rich and successful – or at least finnancially secure, then be a republican.

I can not get any assistance or medical care, or food stamps because my child gets a few dollars for support. The differences between Democrats & Republicans exist because they have been well orchestrated. The "owned" media has convinced us that these differences are relevant. The people that hire our candidates are the people that matter. Their goal is to fleece the world & enrich themselves. Pick whichever poison you must be know in the end both parties work for those behind the curtains.

So what does that make the Democratic Party? You know, the one that passed the President's Universal Health Care Law? The same law that prioritizes people based on how sick they may be? Globs of cells that they pretend to care about.

My Country has universal health-care. it's amazing, privatizing it would be just like paying car insurance. you get scammed. I think your insurance companies are already scamming you guys. You hardly even know your paying for it, it just comes out of taxes. But, I can see where republicans dont like it. You need a Real Government to run it for it to be effective. Your government is lacking, mainly because of the republicans trying to stonewall everything. and your elections and the fight for power is ridiculous. YOu guys have been covering election stuff for over a year now, and your elections arnt untill november?! the time passed should've been spent on the economy, not bickering and power struggle.

      • John

Lewis summarizes, but he's basically right. There is more demand for health services than there is supply. That means that some will get it, and some won't. There are only a few ways to decide who gets those services. One is money- the price rises until the amount that can afford it equals the amount of service available. One is time- if you lock in artifically low prices, then people wait in line. It was true in the 1970's when gas prices in the US were fixed, and it's true in socialized medicine systems where people wait months or years for treatment. Personally, I'd rather have the first one, because I can work harder and make more money... but I can't make cancer wait longer if I'm standing in line waiting my turn for surgery or chemo. Caring about people would mean trying to increase the amount of services available- but Obamacare has led mroe doctors than ever to decide to stop practicing, or reduce their services. It sounds great in a soundbite, but it actually hurts, rather than helps.

I WISH universal health care was passed in our country!! You need to get informed , you must be watching FOX propeganda. We do not have universal health care in this country. The politicians would not allow it because it would be a hit to the insurance companies. We simply have a few more protections from being royally screwed by insurance companies along with expanded coverage for low income and the formation of insurance pools to hold down cost and a host of other things. However since the Supreme court ruled that states don't have to participate in the pools or the medicaid expansion if you live in a republican state you won't reap all the benefits because your govenor will be pouting and withholding those services from you to prove a point.... the point? Uh I will let you fill in the blank. I don't cuss on forums or blogs.

yeah slick, there is a better way. Its called a single payer system, but unfortunately thats too "commy-like" to get passed. Stigma about goverment run anything. So unfortuantely we have to settle for second best, which does involve making health insurance mandatory.. or there is no possible way to cover pre-exsiting conditions or lower rates.

      • JP

@John: Do you really think you can save up the hundreds of thousands of dollars cancer treatment costs? And do you think you can get the second job while suffering from cancer?

Why shouldn't treatment be prioritized by how sick you are? Seems like a more humane way than prioritizing by how rich you are. And the supply of doctors has been limited by medical school admission policies and cost. It would be a simple matter to train more doctors, and if demand goes up enough, that will happen. Any lack of supply in this case is artificial.

Healthcare should not be a commodity traded on Wall Street. The chemo drug that I have to inject WEEKLY costs me $1000.00/week even with insurance. I can't afford it so am no longer taking it. I have to spend my salary on other stupid stuff like my mortgage, other medication, food, gas to get to work... The same drug, if purchased in Canada, would cost me approximately 25% of what it sells for here. That is just one example of how the free market 'regulates' itself. LIFE, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness...

A recent "Investor's Business Daily" article provided very
interesting statistics from a survey by the United Nations International
        Health Organization.

Percentage of men and women who survived a cancer five years
        after diagnosis:

        U.S. 65%

        England 46%

        Canada 42%

Percentage of patients diagnosed with diabetes who received
        treatment within six months:

        U.S. 93%

        England 15%

        Canada 43%

Percentage of seniors needing hip replacement who received it
        within six months:

        U.S. 90%

        England 15%

        Canada 43%

Republicans favor businesses. It has been this way for a long time. Democrats favor government. It has been this way for a long time. Both are being invaded by Progressives who favor absolute power. Most notable self-proclaimed progressives? George Bush, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama. Progressives hate the free market. If they don't want a FREE Market, what do they want? If by definition, the market is the people – what happens to the people if there is no FREE Market? Romney is not the best candidate, but with him, we can buy time while we build up a better one next time. With Obama who has directly spoken out against the free market and hammered it economically in the last four years, we may be on a road we may not recover from. You will know a Progressive when they are serious and say "you'll have to wait until we pass the bill before you can see what is in it." – Nancy Pelosi.

        Never.

The man wants every man, woman and child to be dependent on the federal government for every single need - from cradle to grave. And that's exactly what Obama's followers want as well - to sit on their fat rears and accept EVERYTHING from the government.

when capitalism is unharnessed and unchecked and everything is driven by the most production for the least money.. and is unchecked it breeds the destruction that captilism has come to. Really? Think about it, you can only increase profits and productivity for so long then it burns out. We are at the burn out point. Republicans want unchecked unmonitored run free capitalism and at this point that means poor ppl go die, soon to be poor work 2 jobs for $2 an hour. The Republican party cares only about $ and nothing about ppl who are not elite and in their club. NOt saying democrats are much better at this point but at least they still seem to stand on some moral value. If we elect a war hungry candidate who doesn't in practice invest in his own country or create jobs in his own country then aren't we voting for exactly what has gotten us to this dire situation for the average working person?

By the way – on that Word Association – that is spot on for Progressives like Bush and Obama. Anyone who wants government control like they do is using anyone and everyone to get their power. I don't think voters – the majority of Republican and Democratic voters agree with Obama. I think most of those who vote for Obama want to deny that what he says is what he means. And then when he makes promises that are impossible to keep because of what it will cost, his voters believe he will overcome the impossibility in the numbers. If you understand what he is doing, you aren't voting for Obama unless you think you get a seat at the elite table.

Well yes, I vote for Obama because better him than the other choice. That is what our elections have come to. No real choices. Having researched an listened to many progressives who point out the wrongs with our country I have to say that they agree on one thing, they don't like everything Obama is doing but it is important to any hope for our future that he is president given the choice presented.

There is no way you're putting Bush on my team. btw, saying things on the internet doesn't make them true. Ask Bush if he considers himself a Progressive. You will get an unambiguous no. Ask people who like him if he's a progressive. Same answer. Ask people who call themselves Progressives if Bush is a Progressive. Same answer.

This sounds like Glenn Beck's view of the world, which seems to be constructed from word association.

Democrats don't abort babies. How silly. Individuals make that decision and whether you agree with abortion or not it is right a woman has over her own body to make that decision. I don't agree with abortion, but I do agree that no man has the right to rule a woman's body or health. Republicans like to talk about civil liberties yet that is just another they would like to take away. And how unbalanced ? How do you reject ones right to have an abortion but then be anxious to hand down the death penalty? Isn't it all a bit contridictary on both sides. However one is directly held in womans body and her health while the other does not impose on the rights of common citizens unless they are wrongly convicted and executed which has happened many times.

I gave up certain rights for most of my life to for a lot of filth in America so they could enjoy the best this country had to offer, unfortunatly, in less than 4 years this country has lost a lot of what it had to offer and another Obama term will see me leave this country, not just threaten to like the Hollywood talking heads.

Let's ask France. And Italy. And Spain.

All those countries (and their socialist friends) that are in such terrible economic shape.

Because they're obviously so very, very WISE.

The only thing the other party did was watch a lot of jobs go overseas and fat cats cash in on homes that no one could afford after they got their rediculous loans approved. The Eurozone is finally collapsing because they were trying to mimick the failing policies of former administrations prior to Obama.

And todays Idiot of the Week award goes to.....

Seriously, if any party has a claim to scare tactics, it goes whole heartedly hands down to the GOP/RNC.
        "Obama wasn't born here!"
        "Obama is a communist!"
"Obama is going to turn your kids gay!"
"Obama wants to turn Catholics Muslim!"
(that last one was more of a joke on my part)
Since 2008, the republican party has done nothing but run a smear campaign and has stalled democracy at every turn in the hopes of scaring Americans into voting for their failure of a candidate that, on any other election year, wouldn't have a prayer of winning. (Remember when he ran against McCain?) It isn't like he hasn't been saying the same crap since 2007/08 when he tried the first time to get the Republican nom.

As a Marine Corp veteran, i could not force myself to vote for a man with no military history in his family. As a matter of fact, are there not 5 grown, healthy sons in the Romney family that are certainly wealthy on their own. But none have stepped forward in the last decade as so many of our fathers and sons have to fight and die for this country. No sacrifices for this family or do the POOR continue to battle so the rich can stay rich? Just an observation

Your current health care plan (if you have one) does the exact same thing, and has been doing so since it's inception...what's more is that you PAY THEM TO DO IT. Get off the "I hate Obamacare" bandwagon and try exercising your mind for once. The correct course of action is to just make health care free for everyone...or create a single payer system. No exchanges, no shopping around for the best insurance company. Of course, organizations like the Tea Party will likely resort to mass murder if that ever happened, so we just have to wait for them to all die of natural causes before we can actually fix this country.

Now that is a humane, ethical, affordable, and rational option to declining health. Much more so than saddling the single grandkid with the bill for keeping two or three grandparents on eternal life support. Sadly nothing is free- a bit of reality often missing in health care discussions.

The World becomes the dangerous place in different aspects:

    Water war,
    Border war,
    Economical war (Rich vs Poor),
    Leadership war and
    Safeguarding/self-interest war.

Although, America's leadership election process is much better than any other Countries, still there are many questions remained unanswered. One example is buying votes by Money, which will have some consequence. We also witnessed, without the full participations/votes of each American Soldiers in battle zones, someone got appointed by President/Commander-in-chief.

CNN keeps giving that angle: like anybody in the world really cares! The thing is: as long as American international policy goes, there is a lot of talk but very little difference between two parties. So why should people of the world give a s-t! They are not so much exposed to US propaganda and probably do not see the difference because it is not there!
All these percentages only show how people see current US standing. Change the name of the President: the numbers will hardly even move.

It is not a Ring Fight, Not a Show of Muscles, ...Yep all of those might be done in the meanwhile. And well later on. But if a democracy has natural mechanisms in place, they can not go over the board. It starts with aware people off course. The society who are freely informed who heve access to information.. Who have been brought up to think clearly. Say Evolution rather than devolution.

Well therein lies the problem with globalization. Personally, Europe's opinion at this point means zip to me. They need to worry about why they've only had the Euro in circulation for less than 15 years and are in such a dilemma. Didn't follow their own EU guidelines so they can just keep quiet if they would. How we handle the US and our Nationalism and stregnth is all that should be important to our President. If he surrounds himself with wise and qualified advisors and agency heads, the right momentum will occur. Personally, the idea of either of them presiding does nothing for my enthusiasm. Romney is way to military industrial complex gung ho for me. And Obama is just an immature ego maniac with no true wisdom or clarity and lets the federal agencies just take advtantage of the fact that he's such a fool. The day we actually are able to allow a moderate utilitarian to rise up the ranks is the day I will be happy. Till then, I'll just keep blocking out all the noise and miserable screamers out there. Peace and tranquility are things that I value.

One of the most serious problems in the US at the moment is the blatant attempt by the Republicans to steal the election through voter suppression nation-wise, with the most outragous being in Ohio. This poses a huge danger to the concept of a free America and affects all of America. I suggest a nation-wide movement of demonstrations [peaceful] to protest these attempts at voter suppressions as quickly as possible. Perhaps starting on Sunday (Sept 2, 2012), Lets see if there are any real Americans left. Please pass this message on to every internet activity you can. I think that President Obama is doing a good job right now. No president can solve all the problems that the US has in four years, that's why re-electing him for the next term is possibly the best move. After eight years under Democratic leadership if there is no positive progress within the States as far as healthcare and the economy then you can look at change. As being a non American I realize it is not my choice but you can be guaranteed Obama has got the respect of the rest of the world, Something ex-president Bush never had.

And will this "respect" pay for the trillions of dollars in debt Obama has piled on us? Will it replace the millions of jobs he's cost us? Will it pay for the massive spike in health insurance costs he's given us? The man has been a complete disaster for the American people.

Do people in the rest of the world base their votes on what the American people want? Of course not. Why should we base ours on their desires? They don't like Obama because they think he'll be good for the American people.. they like Obama because they think he'll give them what THEY want for themselves.

Because you don't realize that America is a modern day empire, and world police? do you not belive that he who has the power and the money calls the shots or at least has a huge influence on world policy? History just repeats itself. for example, when you guy's re-elected Bush, we all face-palmed ourselves, we knew before you did that you guys were duped. his second term sealed the deal. the stock markets crashed, and my economy suffered because of the rift of your economic power house collapse. ohhh, and your war with Iraq and destabilization of the ME drove up our gas prices.

We are in dire straights for sure, but there is little or nothing a lower middle class woman can do to change what has been set into motion. Bush may have raised a debt in his two terms while fighting a war on terrorist. Obama more than tripled that debt during his one term! Obama boasts about transparency and his administration passed an unaffordable healthcare bill behind closed doors, the speaker of the house Pelosi said "We must pass the bill to find out what is in it" Have you read what is in it???? OMG! Money was taken from Social Security and shifted to Obamacare. This administration reckless spending is hurting this country. Ask the majority of Americans who are sitting with no job in sight, High prices at the store and gas pumps. This spending is on Obama's watch not Bush. It has been for years and I have not seen Obamas promise of Hope and Change. The fact is it is not working.

Bluerain – the money you are referring to came from Medicare not Social Security and he moved it – not took it. Lord – I'm Canadian and I understand! A great deal of your debt added by Pres. Obama was to place two UNFUNDED wars on to the books – the Bush administration had not put the war costs on to the national accounts. How can American citizens not understand this stuff. I don't even live there and I get it. Whether you agree with someone's politics or not, please grasp the things they do and don't lie about them.

People outside the US have long favored Democratic presidents over Repubs. That said, Bush43 hurt himself by not consulting any foreign leaders before he started invading other countries in 2001 and 2002. Romney also shows a distinct lack of sensitivity to others' POV outside the US and has unnecessarily started conflict with China and Russia before even being elected.

You get others to help you by first recognizing the value of their POV and contribution. People in this country need to realize we live in a connected world – we need others and what we say and do here gets out.

NOT saying it was necessary or right, it's just hard to say you would have made a different call. Obama isn't exactly buddy buddy with China or Russia either as they are opposed on the issues of Syria and Iran. Saying that the rest of the world favors one party over another is some what foolish considering the majority of the Presidents since the end of WWII have been Republican.

Europeans are really mystified by Mormon beliefs, they would think the Americans were stupid to elect someone so closely tied to the LDS Church.
Do we care? Probably not, but it actually matters. The US is an economic global giant, American products are sold world wide in spite of the export deficit! If other countries see us as dopes for electing some one whose religion is bizarre, then can they trust our products?

I was always told that success breeds contempt. Now while the world is struggling including the US, the world has to live with that in just 236 years the US become the economic and military world power. No matter how bad it may seem (even 4 years ago at the beginning of the recession), we still were better off than most of the world. Americans are not grateful for anything. The poorest of the poor are doing well compared to many countries, yet the poor still envy the rich. If everyone in America earned a 6 figure income, we would still have people complaining that they were not millionaires. It is all about envy and jealousy which is perpetuated by this liberal myth that everyone gets a fair shot. Who said when we were born that life is fair? Some are lucky, some are blessed with talent, some are born into money, and some have no clue how to manage their finances. Bottom line is that American exceptionalism comes from within. IT IS NOT CREATED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH.

Actually, it is pretty clear. If the world wants the US to be the world cop and try to stop mass killings and nuclear war, Romney is the answer. If the world wants the US to let terrorist states torture and kill their people and get control of WMDs, they will support Obama. It is quite simple. The Peace Prize winner in the White House has allowed more senseless murder than any US leader in history. The US President is also an assassin, killing an American citizen without trial to make political headlines. So Obama assassinates a couple people and brags while watching tens of thousands be tortured and murdered. That is the Obama Way. It is clear. Obama is different from Romney. Obama would kill your baby as it came out of your womb, if you asked him to. Romney would not. So if you want a killer of innocent people, you vote Obama. If you respect human life and want a leader to protect human life you vote Romney. The decision is really based on uncivilized behavior versus civilized behavior. In the past, the respect for life was nil. Torture and killing for no legitimate reason was the norm. As civilization progressed, torture and killing was considered inhuman. Obama supports the killing of innocents. Romney does not. Heck, Obama could call for your assassination without judicial involvement (a trial). He has done so. That should bother most civilized human beings. It won't matter to people who have no respect for human life – Islamic terrorists, Liberal abortionists, and Communist followers. The difference is quite clear. Romney respects human life; Obama has no respect for human life. Romney is civilized; Obama is a barbarian, maybe inhuman!

Obama is really Muslim, not Christian. America suppose to be a Christian country, that is run by Christian people. Ever since we move are industries to other countries, that's when are National debt was made, and now its fixing to be 16 trillion dollars now. If we make cars on water,( which was already invented), that means we don't have to use gas again, and it will save us a couple of 1000's of dollars. Now WE will be really joyful, but the oil companies will get mad for the people not buying their oil, and they are not making their millions,or billions of dollars. Right now what are the oil companies doing with their billions of dollars, keeping it, FOR WHAT??!!!!! If their making more money, then half the people around the world, why can they reduce their gas to 50 cents a gallon, and if its because of Iraq, no, its really are people are not drilling oil all in and around America. Lets drill in America, places where people can find oil. Anyways here my last saying.... Long ago lots people use to work on farms, now they work in cities, to me if we have lots of farmers making their own food, learning other things that people suppose to do on a farm, but maybe we need to learn other things besides farm things, that means we can make a better economy, but its little bit to late now. By the way don't use charcoal in a grill, or any other type to cook hamburgers, or any other sort, because if you eat one hamburger, that's like smoking 600 cigars, and it can even give you cancer. bye

I left CNN a long time back when I clearly saw what the main stream media as well as CNN is feeding the American people. This is an injustice to the American people. I could not clear my head as to what was really happening among the two parties until I started tuning in to both sides. It was a real eye opener for this Independent. This author is far left leaning and I wonder if his sources of info is a reliable source? Do your country a favor and tune in to both sides and delve into reliable sources.

Let's be honest, most of Europe is liberal leaning...and we all see how their economies are doing. What is sad is they all want America out of the world affairs...that is until a threat breaks out. Pfft, voting Democrat is a vote for poor foreign policy, bad economics, a healthcare plan that is going to ruin much of the country, and bad for jobs...I don't understand why so many people can't see this.

Strange, our economy was fine before George W, that fine upstanding republican who thought America had 49 states. The USS Missouri had it's 15 mins, John Wayne had his, and now if you keep going down the republican route your country will either burn out be extinguished by someone else ("Oh, no, but we're #1!" he huffs), your military gets weaker by the day while Russia rearms, Europe unites and China rises.

Vote democrat and have your country gradually build a position for itself in the remainder of the 21st century (it wasn't gonna happen in 4 years...) or stick with the GOP and fade out of sight, without dignity, like a tired old man from a different generation.

      Peace from the UK, GObama!

Why should the U.S. give a R-A about the world. When it is all said and done U. S. need to take care of Americans. We have long learned that the "world" likes the U. S. only for what it can get–usually money. Money from the pockets of the American Tax payer, which is only about 50%. IMO the other no-tax-paying 50% of Americans can are no better than "the world" they too have their hands in the pockets of the American tax payer-99.9% of the time vote for only what they can get free.

Well Al Qaeda wants Romney because they know the Republicans are ineffective in hunting them down. Many of the dictatorships will probably want him as well, because he's wanting to deny the rights of Americans and send the US back into the stone age with their line of thought and the denial of rights for women and society as a whole.

The civilized world will go for Obama, because he's at least trying to get the US caught up to the rest of the world in terms of government. He realizes we have fallen very far behind (think useless wars like Iraq) because of stupid decision makings, rather than focusing on Americans and American soil. When the US catches up to all the other 1st world nations, it will make the world a much better place...

I would honestly say based on what i seen is that neither candidate deserves to be president. Obama when he got elected made all these promises about how everything was going to get better and end economic hardship etc etc. The reality is that Obama has added 5 trillion to the national debt, the job market is weak and there are not many Jobs around and worse of all the economy itself is not expanding we are shrinking due to a lack of manufacturing as the vast majority of jobs today are shipped to China or India. Companies are hiring more over seas than here in the United States. Mitt Romney is a total fake, he states that he is in favor of one thing then says another thing. Romney is a typical politician, and will say anything to get elected. Obama does not deserve to be re-elected based on his performance and Mitt Romney does not have the integrity nor does he care about the Average American. It worries me that the Republicans are interested in cutting programs such as medicare and continue to protect corporate interests for the rich, while the poor will continue to get poorer. Ron Paul who is out of the GOP running, should run as a independent, he is the best candidate for president of the USA. They can force people to choose between Obama and Mitt Romney, but it does not mean that neither one of them is good. It is becoming a point to where we are choosing not who is better, but who is the least worse candidate. America should really reconsider voting for a third party candidate and stop the monopoly the Democrats and Republicans have on the government. The truth is both of these parties have failed the American people, and i personally lost respect for them given one claims they will make things better while the other makes things worse. I vote for Ron Paul, and i vote for a vote of no confidence in Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

You can't blame Obama for everything its was boring to listen a Obama bashing event. To be honest Ron Paul seems more intelligent and level headed as a candidate. Finally, I don't see the logic why they would have Clint Eastwod at a conference? What did really have to say, he did not make my day!! What a joke!! All Mitt Romney is concerned about is getting into the White House he has no concerns for the ordinary folks he is looking out for himself..

The comments here illustrate a basic problem in America today – extreme polarization. Both parties have become enslaved to ideology whether it be far right or far left. It makes no sense to say that one party or the other has a greater interest in peace and prosperity, and to say that one party "cares" more than the other is just silly. Everyone wants success and security for America. The difference is how to achieve it. The Republicans have become too beholdin' to the far right and Tea Party, some of whose ideas are good and some appalling. The Democrats must pander to the far left who also have some reasonable and some atrocious ideas. Neither party is willing to compromise, or even conduct rational dialogue. Voters are to blame. It is time for the more moderate majorities of both parties, and independents to take control and get government back to pragmatic politics. Well considered compromise is the only way to start moving the country, and as a result, the world in the right direction. Let's have a rational, fact based approach to solving our problems by putting ideology and emotion aside for a time.

"Let's have a rational, fact based approach to solving our problems by putting ideology and emotion aside for a time." Thank you for making this comment DJG, you highlight my sentiments on the issue almost exactly.

Right now all I hear is clouded and scattered thoughts seemingly fueled by headlines or biased sources. We need to not sit blinded by out passions and emotions regarding this issue and take the time to develop a well-informed opinion on the issue.

Let's not cheapen a potentially intelligent and productive argument with statements like "put the crack pipe down", "you sound like a dropout" and my personal favorite "complete nincompoop". What's right is subjective, everyone believes something different, clings to those who agrees with them and exiles those who don't or laughs and brushes their comments off as inferior or unintelligent. Let's take some time to listen, truly listen to the arguments coming from all sides, there's something of value coming from either end.

Can't you just see Karl Rove and Rumsfeld back in power? (Those were the day) How far back depends on how many TEA and Right Wing Christians get into office. Enough of those and it could be back to the mid 1770's, searching out those evildoers. Fox News and Rush radio will once again rally the voices of the people.

And if BO is relected, those right wingers screaming about Obamacare ruining the country can always leave. Oops, most of the top tier countries you'd want to live in have socialized medicine. Darn.

To dismiss what the world thinks is arrogant. As long as the U.S. is involved with the rest of the world the rest of the world will be interested in what goes on in the U.S. Your last president was a disaster, responsible for an illegal war, illegal torture and a near total collapse of the world economy. He truly was a hated and despised president. Obama may be the lesser of two evils ( you really need a 3 party system ) but at least he has some sort of vision for your country. That is what the world likes about him rightly or wrongly. For the life of me and just about every non-American in the west at least can not understand how someone can vote for a candiate that has lied in the past ( Romney lied about his residency when running for governor ) won't release the needed tax returns, has no interest in helping the middle-class or poor. Obama at least is trying to bring the U.S. into the 21st century socially. The anti-woman anti-gay rhetoric is astounding for 2012. Obama may not be the best, but he's really all you've got. If their goal was to public service and they were simply that, public servents, how did they get so rich? Is it greed that allowed Al Gore to make $100 million or was it his patetnt on the internet he invented? How did the Clinton's make $50 million? Was it their public service salaries or the exorbitant fees Slick Willy charges for speaking? How about the Kennedy's? Wothr billions and have trusts set up for them in off shore accounts, but no one dares question them, not even when one kills a woman while driving drunk. John Kerry....now there's a fine man......let's see he married a Mellon and then a heinz...hmmm..sounds like he is a money chaser oh and tax cheat.....worth over a billion and he parks his boat in anothe rstate to avoid taxes....then there is the emperor himself, Obama who made up stories in his two books which made him millions. He could have given it to charity, but it is nicer to just keep it- estimated worth? 10-12 million. Not bad for a community organizer. You see folks, the media elite and hollywood fakes all talk the talk but live very....VERY extravegant lifestyles, lifestyles that they live yet criticize Republican's for doing. It's called hypocrisy and the media has pulled the wool right over your head folks. Republicans, they dont preach to the poor and yet live wealthy lives. They want to raise the living standards of the lower class and make no excuses for their wealth. It's called hard work. Are there abuses? Yep, but the blatant hypocrisy of the Democrats is astounding. No one questioned Kerry's wealth or the Kennedy's, but if a succesful Republican comes in, like Romney, it is the focus of all the media and the liberals. Wake up people, hard work buy some makes them rich, but also provides jobs to the vast majority of people. All their money? Where do you think it goes? Under their mattress? No, you see they invest it in stocks which allow companies to raise capital to expand their business which is the driving force for jobs in our nation. Government cannot pay people. The U.S. tax payers pay the government bills. Any social program is not free, it has to be paid for and by whom? You and I. Well, 40 some odd percent of Americans pay no taxes while the top 10 % of wealthy Americans pay 70% of the nations bills. And our President wants more. It not fair, it's stealing. The government should decide how much of YOUR money you get to keep, that is not it's role. yet now it seems to have become it's driving force for everything it wants to "give" the people. That is why Europe is dying financially and the U.S is following in it's footsteps. All empires must fade and it is bad decisions by leaders that do it. romeny may not be great, but he is vastly superior to Obama who had no experience leading anything, yet we elected him to lead the most powerful nation on earth. Fool you once, shame on you for voting for Obama, fool you twice shame on the U.S. for losing it's way.

Obama and the Democrats have destroyed our economy. Bush called for financial reform 13 different times starting in 2003 because he knew our housing market was oveurheating. Everytime Bush called for financial reform Democrats Barney Frank and Chris Dodd said that Bush was crazy for trying to slow down the housing market. Democrats can run anything into the ground just look at what they have done the last 4 years. Trillions of taxpayer money wasted and misspent with hugh tax increases starting next year.

I SUPPORT RON PAUL AS A WRITE IN, THEY CAN FORCE PEOPLE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN TWO CORPORATIONS PUPPETS BUT I WILL NEVER SUPPORT EITHER OF THEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE FLAWED. I feel pretty confident saying that what the rest of the world would most appreciate is if Americans would stop being so extreme, and return to getting along. We are very important to the world economy and, unlike Europe, China or India, we have a political and economic system that is neither unstable nor rife with corruption. America could be a bright spot in the world were it not for the increasingly crazy rhetoric from the right to the effect that some kind of civil unrest is likely if we don't all vote for Romney. It is enough to cause uncertainty abroad about the U.S. (and even among some Americans).

Democratic men really don't like women–if they did they would be willing to wear cond oms instead of making the women take unnatural hormones, with terrible-side effects or undergo the emotional and physical trama associated abortion! They think with their tes t icles and think that the only thing women should consider when they vote is–the state of their v aginas. They need to wake up to the fact that women care about their positions in the board room more than laying on their backs in the bed room.Women care about owning a home–having a job–the poor state of public education far more than they do about being able to sleep around without worrying about preg nancy. We have evolved –too bad the men that support Democrats haven't. I would gladly support government resources used to provide free condoms as birth control–if men used them they could erase most STD's from the world, prevent preg nancy, no need for guardacile, abortions–but if slu ts want take a dangerous drug to prevent pregnancy–let them pay for it !!

Why has Obama spent millions of $$$ hiding his college transcripts? Obama likes to talk about transparency and criticize Romney over taxes but Obama has spent millions of $$$ trying to keep the American public from seeing his college records. Why? What is Obama hiding? Did he join radical muslim groups in college or receive funding from Islamic groups to pay for college? Did he get money from the Black Panthers which he protected during the last election? Not very transparent.

Leading from behind, I don’t know who decided to use that kind of language to describe President Obama’s leadership because it is not true. The president has led tactically. We had a president George Bush who “led from in front” and he led us into two wars of which we are still fighting after a decade. It has gone on for so long that many Americans have forgotten that we are still at war, and so far I haven’t heard any speech given by the GOP convention speakers as to how we are going to bring this national expense to an end.

Re elect Pres Obama, lt him complete the job without any hindrance from Republican Congress..

After listening to Rep Ryan speak, I am absolutely convinced this VP candidate is completely out of touch with the real world. He and Romney are a pair of shockingly outdated Grand Old Politicians running for the presidency.

Why is China always in Romney's political agenda in many of his speches ?

In this era of close connectivity among nations, by using China as a punch bag in election rally suggest recklessness and living too long inside a cavey.

China is now an influential country, economically and militarily even. I doubt China ever want to have anything to do with such hawkish American leaders.

Is Romney unwaware that it will not help America's national debt by being unfriendly to China? Because America cannot solve its monster debt problem alone. The global economics has changed. Uptodate we have yet heard the details on how these two Grand Old Politicians intend to pull America out of its deep financial quagmire

Its surprising to me that Romney and Ryan deliberately pick China as a rallying call in order to win American votes,

Even before he becomes a president, Asia is starting to be wary of Romney's political ideology. China has got more friends in the rest of the world than America. Should Romney ramp up his dislike for China, he will make it difficult for Asia to take sides without causing any divide among themselves.

I can only think of one other reason why Romney dislikes Chinese Government – the Mormon church is unable to proselyte freely in China, to convert Chinese to Mormonism. This is dashing the Mormon church's hope of increasing their declining general membership.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were neither necessary nor urgent and it cost the Americans dearly in trillions plus loss of life and humiliation of defeat. Pakistan was harboring Bin Laden and supporting Talibans and we giving them billions in aid to an untrusting country that was abetting and training on their soil. We couldn’t have been more foolish. Not forgetting that America was experiencing a decade long recession with millions without jobs and foreclosures at all time high during this period.
President Bush pursued polices that brought America to the brink of bankruptcy, dollar devalued against most currencies; gold prices rose 6 times, while most manufacturing jobs shifted abroad. Whatever IT jobs were left in the US was mostly grabbed by Asians on temporary visas that were easily given out while the unemployment figures were rising.
We need to cut down property taxes, wages of government employees, control government expenditure on frivolous spending, bring jobs back to the American citizens and Mitt Romney is unlikely to follow these policies of frugality. Mere campaigning on TV is not going to fix America. I will give President Obama another 4 years to sort out the mess the rich Republicans have created for all of us who seem to be so out of touch.

Hidden behind all of his wonderful rousing convention speeches are other unspoken agendas.

"America will show the world we are strong" which literally means US will go to war again, and soon after the election!

The defence contractors are jumping for joy, finally another warmonger coming to the White House.

Obama is soft, Romney will be tough – he will not hesitate to order an invasion of Iran,

"Let's bomb the hell out of them" .... "The more bombs the USAF dropped the better to create jobs back home. Its good for business"

Romney afterall is a businessman, and a shrewd one who did not hesitate to fire his workers in order to make higher profits.

It's simple folks. The world will want someone in the presidency who will be more willing to do things that benefit them (the world) over Americans. Someone who will take their interests and concerns into any decision, even if it mean it harms the U.S. Someone who won't wield the power the US has economically and militarily. And to that end, the world LOVES Obama.

So if you a President who will lead the US to better times, a stronger economy, and will take actions that benefit Americans above all else, just look at what the world wants (a weak president) and who they support, and go the opposite way.

If Barack Obama is respected in Europe and elsewhere, it is in part because he knows that at most, the POTUS has the ability to demonstrate leadership globally. Or, the POTUS can be a parochial cowboy like George W. Bush was for 8 years. Europe just wants to see the US avoid putting another idiot in the White House.

HINDU KALI – GODDESS OF VIOLENCE/TERRORISM

A recent report by United Press trust of India (UPI) stated that during the past three years more than 2,500 young boys and girls were sacrificed to goddess Kali in India. Another of AFP's recent reports say: hundreds of young boys and virgin girls are sacrificed every month for the deity Kali. In one case Rama Sewak hacked his eight year old son to death in broad daylight in Delhi because goddess Kali had told him he would come back to life and bring him good fortune. Bloodthirsty Kali is worshipped openly the length and breadth of India. Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. She is also known as Durga, Devi, Shaktima, Uma and Parvathi in other manifestations. The priest of Delhi, Kali Bari, says that a child sacrificed to Kali ensures a man the birth of a son. Human sacrifices are also made to these gods or goddesses, either to appease them or to ask favours of them.

The worldview of President Obama is very positive because it’s not laced with any racial bias, e.g. "a Kenyan with colonialist revenge, not one of us or has robbed Americans of their birthright or else his birthing." The world view him as human, a black man from mixed racial background and versioned to do his best for United States and the world. He is not perfect and was not received by some as not one of them. Despised by some, rejected and alienated and yet is still the president voted by majority of Americans.

I have nothing personal against President Obama, but it's time the United States move away from Presidents who watch the National debt rise beyond what we can possibly pay back and at least try someone else. He isn't working out. He'll be alright though, unlike the poor people of the United Sates.I cannot find steady employment and have had to sell everything I own and I'm down to the truck my dad left me when he died. I have always worked and I have never had such a bleak and pessimistic outlook for the future. Whatever they have to do to get the U.S. back on track, it needs to get done. It doesn't involve re-electing Obama I'm afraid, but we have shown superior resiliency in picking presidents who aren't effective and are quite okay with running the United Sates into the ground.

Grand Old Politician Ryan is blowing alot of hot air, he is telling everyone like he can resolve Americans National Debt with a wave of his magic wand.

Ryan is a dreamer, he dreams about money fallling from the sky, and that America's US$16 trillion debt (a legacy of GOP Bush Jr) will disappear if he steps into the White House.

    Dream on Ryan,

because it's guaranteed not to decrease the National Debt, by a GOP Presidency. In fact there is an even stronger possibility a GOP Presidency will increase America's fiscal debts because both men are just not bred to tackle such a big problem. Especially when its been said Ryan and Mitt are already disagreeing, or having different opinions, on certain issues .

No heavily indebted Government will be able to create jobs – by reducing taxes. Without jobs there will be less spending by people. The economy shrinks. Resulting in higher unemployment.

I am beginning to believe that Ryan and Romney are misleading Americans, and the world, that they can solve America's woes. Based on what have been said by them, there is nothing substantial to support their wishful thinking about the National Debt.

America's National Debt is going to hang around for the next decade or more. No one, repeat nobody, is able to dissolve this monster debt in 5 years or even 10 years. It will take time and prudence to see this debt completely demolished.

The careless damage to America's national wealth , by the Republicans, will not go away just because Ryan says so.

    I didn't catch the convention.

Did Mitt say anything about hiding his money in off-shore bank accounts, about his tax returns for the last several years, or about what happened to the workers and businesses that experienced the services of Bain Capital?

What I want to know is how is Mitt going to fix the mess that was initiated by the Republicans?

Didn’t Regan repeal the Glass-Steagall Act, which permitted the banks to merge with the investment firms on Wall Street? And wasn’t that what largely contributed to the economic destruction we’re currently experiencing?

Does Mitt intend to reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act, which incidentally was implemented after the stock market crash in 1929, to prevent another Great Depression—or in our case, Great Recession.

Are we not suffering the consequences of poor physical policies, irresponsible management, and corrupt political processes?

Is Mitt going to correct these errors, or give us more of the same?

      Oops.

Of course I meant fiscal policies.

Of course it was the irresponsible fiscal policies and mismagement of the past twenty to thirty years, which resulted in disasterous physical conditions we're now suffering.

      Freudian slip!

We shouldn’t be so hard on Mitt. I’m sure he’s doing his best, given that he’s trying to put a good face on a bad situation and a flawed party.

Isn’t the country suffering because of the past twenty to thirty years of irresponsible and bad fiscal policies, mismanagement and a corrupt political system (vis-à-vis lobbyists)?

Wouldn’t mean that George Bush is responsible for much of the trouble we’re having now. Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan also share responsibility for this, of course.

Wasn’t it Ronald Regan who repealed the Glass-Steagall Act, which permitted the banks to merge with the investment firms on Wall Street? And wasn’t that what largely contributed to the economic destruction we’re currently experiencing?

    Give the guy a break.

Does Mitt intend to reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act, which incidentally was implemented after the stock market crash in 1929, to prevent another Great Depression—or in our case, Great Recession.

Does Mitt intend to prosecute the Wall Street and bank CEOs?

Does he intend to prosecute any accounting firm, which aided and abetted the fraud and perjury that was committed?
Are we not suffering the consequences of poor physical policies, irresponsible management, and corrupt political processes?

Is Mitt going to correct these errors, or give us more of the same?

Before I go out and vote during the presidential elections I just ask myself and my whole family one question. Who is the lesser evil? After a short consensus we all go out and vote for the lesser evil.

the Anti Islamic Video that Romeny thought will help him back fired, because the information got leaked by press TV,

    September 16:

A prominent political analyst says that several groups including American Mormons in the CIA and Zionists are behind the controversial recent anti-Islam film made in the US, Press TV reports.

“I would identify two or perhaps three components, the first is a Mormon mafia inside the CIA, the group of Mormon high officials of the CIA who want Romney to become president and they think that by having the kinds of events that we are seeing, they can make Obama look bad in front of the American public,” Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley told Press TV during an interview on Saturday.

According to Tarpley, the group follows Brent Scowcroft, who used to be “the right hand man of Henry Kissinger”.

The analyst said that the second component consists of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Likud party and "a group of neocons who have attached themselves to the Romney campaign”.

“I would add probably the Saudis, probably the Saudi religious and monarchy, hierarchy,” he added.

He further pointed to ties between “Sam Bacil or Nakula Basseley Nakula”, the man claiming responsibility for the blasphemous movie and Media for Christ's Joseph Nasrallah, a Coptic Christian from Egypt.

Dr. Tarpley also mentioned a series of figures including anti-Islam movie promoter Steve Klein, "Terry Jones, the infamous Qur'an burner", Pamela Geller, and Daniel Pipes, accusing them of promoting Islamophobia and unrest in the world by supporting such films.

"Pamela Geller, I think may be the key to this entire thing; she is a professional Islamophobe very close to the Israelis and probably somewhere in the background we might have somebody like Daniel Pipes, a professor who basically has made a career out of harassing four Palestinian professors at American universities."

What about South American and Latin American opinions on this? I'm annoyed that once again, they are left out of the discussion.

Oh, cool, you studied a lot of countries outside the U.S., but what about Canada? Have you even started to wonder how much people here in Canada, especially in the East, hate Romney's guts just because we were told he acts partly due to his faith in "God"?

Dimziggy – I saw your stats about survival ratings for health related problems comparing the USA, England, and Canada. They may be true, but many go bankrupt while getting treated. Seriously, what's the use of surviving if you got no money? Might as well just legalize euthanasia!... And btw, millions of Americans DO go abroad too – in the millions – to get medical treatment just to be able to afford it! In short your post is nonsense and full of Repug propaganda designed to help the rich get richer!
