We're still in August, but it feels like we're entering the election season for real as the conventions begin and people start really paying attention, Fareed Zakaria says. But journalists following the election day by day can get wrapped up in the minutia of the moment and lose sight of broader trends. So what are the bigger forces that will determine this election? Here's Fareed's take on why this year it could be a battle between the head and the heart.
Fareed Zakaria GPS is broadcast Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET.

WHY "SOME" VOTE "CONSERVATIVE" – STILL?
In the "olden times", we had Kings, and Queens, and Noblemen, and Noblewomen, and Other "Rich" Persons that did "Count" – BUT, NO VOTERS EVER VOTED FOR ANYTHING!
In the "olden times", the others were only Servants, and Serfs, and Other "Poor" Persons that did not "Count" – AND, NO VOTERS EVER VOTED FOR ANYTHING!
Now, in "present times", we have Powerful Persons, that "Count" – AND,TRY TO GET "OTHERS" TO VOTE, THE WAY "POWERFUL PERSONS" WANT, FOR THEIR "OWN PURPOSES"!
Now, in "present times", the others are Low, and Middle level Persons that "Can Count" – IF THEY WANT, SOMETIMES FOR THEIR OWN THOUGHTFUL THINKING; OR BECAUSE THEY THINK SOMEONE ELSE WANTS TO, FOR THEIR "OWN PURPOSES"!
A thoughtful, thinking "Conservative" will balance their progressive vs. conservative thinking, when going to "VOTE TIME", weighing their thinking carefully, before "VOTING" – WITH THEIR OWN "MIND", NOBODY ELSE'S, TO CLUTTER UP WITH IN THEIR "BOOTH"!
-The Old Goat-
Hey papafoote, you got it spot on! You are a wise person!
The seniors will need to commit suicide when their health care dollars run out. The GOP way.
WORD = GOP Association
Old People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Sick People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Poor People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Female People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Non-white People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Non-christian People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Unemployed People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Gay People = Glob of cells that we don't care about. Let them die.
Glob of cells in a womb = Something we PRETEND to care about just to get votes.
you sick liar –
In Democracy , Heart is always used , not Brain . Am I correct Mr Fareed ?
In American style of demo-of-crazy, they let Curious George to steal the presidency.
You mean a MONKEY? Tell me what you really think.
Welcome back, Fareed!
As for Head vs Heart, I know people are disappointed that "Change you can believe in" inside Washington didn't happen, but "You can believe there will be Change" ...to the detriment of everyone who isn't white, male and wealthy that the Republican party is championing should influence enough Heads of that 80% back in 2008 who voted with their Hearts to carry Obama into a second term.
"..June 22, 1897....It was the Sixtieth Anniversaries of Queen Victoria's ascension to the British Throne. The Diamond Jubilee stretched over Five Days on land and sea, ....
...from 1845 to 1870...Britain was producing more than 30 percent of global GDP. Its energy conception was Five times that of the United States and Prussia and 155 times that of Russia. It accounted for one-fifth of the World's trade and two-fifths of its manufacturing trade. And all this with just 2 percent of the World's population!". ( By Fareed Zakaria: 'The Post American World', pages 184 & 191).
So, where are those British Heads Hearts, that inspired Worldwide?
Can the current America practice the good methods of past Great Britain techniques to stay as Superpower?
I don't know if you realize this but Great Britain didn't stay a superpower.
Clearly, neither is the US.
Voting has become an emotional issue that people can act irrationally. If they have made a mistake, big deal, vote for somebody else next time.
Next time, post a transcript please. I'm lazy and don't want to listen all the way through
.
J. Von: What is a rational vote? What is an emotional vote? People just vote largely on guess or instincts.
Do they later have buyer's remorse? Some do, some don't.
GOP Word Association: My version of reality is neither party is confronting the truth. The country has,and will not possess, the funds to extend Medicare and domestic spending– as is– for much longer. We can't tax our way out and maintain sustained economic growth.
An emotional vote is when you erect for a president, not elect for a president during the presidential erection. Who are you going to erect for when the presidential erection comes?
This sounds familiar, wait.....
Nice to see you back, Fareed. You are a breath of fresh air.
We now need to focus on India. The American invasion of Afghanistan brought to the forefront the irrelevance of India as a nation. With a population of over 1.2 billion people there was no value that this nation could bring to the table. Their soldiers (ragtag) 1.2 million continue hiding in the trenches scared from Talibans. A few teenage Talibans invaded the country and held it hostage for days on end showing how useless India is. It was embarrasing for the world to observe this humiliation of a nation that was being touted as a regional power.
Now, all is not lost. There are solutions avalable. It is interesting to note that Taj Mahal (purely by connotation, not size) ) reminds one of the saying of our dear architect friend Mies Van Der Rohe that “Less is More” and its application to India geo-politically. The recent economic bubble burst and minority backlash in India point to the necessity of imploding India in a controlled manner to make it more manageable administratively, before it ruptures chaotically. The Moghals may have left behind a legacy of regality in India but it was Mies that has given Indians a political concept that may give Indian Hindus a chance at survival albeit in a fragmented form
It is absolutely a no-brainer. You either want more failed policies, more welfare, and more of the same, like high unemployment, or you are willing to take a different approach, in the hope that things can and will improve, under different leadership.
It isn't about political parties, it is about common sense. You don't go with what ISN'T working!
We ALREADY know that going back to what Bush did DIDN'T WORK!!!
Rick, if the GOP had a cohesive rational and consistent policy that was being ported by Mr. Flip-Flop, you might have a point. Unfortunately the GOP has assumed the mantel of irrational extremism. Obama has had to contend with these morons for four years and as such has not been nearly as effective as we had hoped. You're right, it is a no brainer, get the Congress under Democrat control and at least we can move forward!
Hey, Mr. Mc Daniel, what you describe is the often displayed 'knee-jerk' reaction common to Ameican politics. GW messed up the US for two embarassing terms, and FACT, spent more $$$$ in that time than any democrat that ever sat in white house.Look it up Sir, it i true! So, how do Republicans claim to be the party of smaller govt. Easily, by LYING to get elected. Ronald Reagan RAISED TAXES son, look it up! Unfortunately, nobody can read anything more than two sentences long. If everybody did 2 hrs. research one night on a computer, you will definitely vote OBAMA unless u r a racist idiot that is!
Thank God that you're back Fareed! And may I suggest a small team at Time, in charge of filtering these small blunders.
rationality and logic have no place in politics. they should bit voters being normal humans go with their emoyions instead. always have always will.
I am glad Fareed you back!
You are the one of American best with Rachell Maddow!
Fareed! You are still working after getting caught for plagarism? I understand you lost your chance to be an Obama confident in the White House. You should be in jail!
