As war talk spikes again in Israel, U.S. officials are searching for ways to convince the Israelis to hold off on military action. It could be that the heightened debate in Israel over military options and war preparations in the country aim mainly to elicit even tougher international and American actions against Iran.
But there are leaders in Israel – including, it would seem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak – who view the Iranian threat as severe enough to follow through on their threats, particularly now that they have staked their domestic and international reputations on doing so.
In order to stave off such an attack, a number of prominent former Israeli officials are calling for more explicit U.S. threats to use force against Iran. White House officials are reportedly debating whether to publicly announce red lines that might provoke American military action against Iran. The Obama administration can only expect more political pressure during an election year to make more explicit declarations supporting military force as diplomatic efforts and sanctions do not yet appear to be stopping Iran’s nuclear progress.
However, promising force or support for it are the wrong ways to prevent a unilateral Israeli strike and resolve the Iranian nuclear challenge. There are good reasons why the majority of Israel’s own security establishment opposes a unilateral military attack against Iran; these reasons do not suddenly become moot because it would be the United States conducting such action and not Israel. To be sure, a U.S. attack would likely be more effective, given greater American capabilities; and even those Israelis opposed to a unilateral attack may nonetheless favor military action if the United States is in the lead.
Yet there are other considerations and risks raised in the Israeli debate that are just as pertinent to American military action. The most critical of these are only in part about the operational issues surrounding the strike itself or the immediate retaliation it might provoke against Israel, Iran’s Gulf neighbors, U.S. forces in the region or its impact on global oil markets. They are about the dangerous longer-term strategic consequences of such an action.
Would a military attack, even if launched with superior U.S. military capabilities, actually do more than just delay Iran’s program? Might it accelerate rather than slow Iran’s seeming drive to weaponize its nuclear program? Would international pressure on Iran dissipate after a military attack? And if so, would it thus become easier for Iran to reconstitute its program after an attack?
Why would the president of the United States write a blank check for military action now without the resolution of such critical strategic questions? What if threatening “credible” military action publicly does not lead Iran to back down, as advocates of this option believe? The United States would then face the unfortunate predicament of pressure to act on its threats and engage in a war with Iran that it was trying to avoid.
Rather than public posturing aimed at encouraging the United States to make such firm declaratory policies – creating a sense of mistrust and tension in U.S.-Israeli relations that can only benefit Iran – Israeli officials should work with their American counterparts to quietly seek common strategic understandings on what type of Iranian endgame is acceptable and what conditions would need to be in place for force to be contemplated.
At the same time, the United States can continue the wide array of “assurance” policies already underway to ease Israeli concerns over Iran and bolster its military capabilities. With all the apparent doubts among Israel’s political elite that they can’t count on the United States, it is easy to overlook the unprecedented levels of military assistance and cooperation between the two countries.
U.S. military aid to Israel has reached record levels, providing Israel with the most advanced American weapon systems. President Obama and other senior administration officials have also made a number of public statements suggesting that U.S. policy is not to contain Iran but to prevent a nuclear weapons program. In the backdrop of such statements is a steady U.S. military buildup in the Gulf region, including the bolstering of naval vessels and fighter aircraft that could reach targets throughout Iran.
All these measures have yet to convince the Israeli leadership that the U.S. is serious. Perhaps an in-person appearance by President Obama in the Israeli Knesset reiterating these American positions and reminding the Israeli public of tangible American military commitments to Israeli security could change opinions, although a presidential visit to Israel before the election is unlikely.
Instead of committing the United States to take military action against Iran, a better option would be convincing more Israeli leaders and people that a military attack is still a bad idea if the goal is to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. If and when President Obama goes to Jerusalem, that should be his message, not promises of U.S. military force.

I'm in the US and I am extremely tired of the warmongering of Israel. It is disgusting to say the least that we violated the tripartide agreements initially and gave Israel all kinds of weapons and weapons technologies besides what Israel stole, but this has gotten way out of hand in the middle east. For decades now Israel has plundered the middle east and I cannot help but recognize the implications that this plundering has caused the expected result of terrorism. I know I certainly do not want this Iranian Regime to get a nuclear weapon but this regime would not be in power if Israel hadn't demolished tons of people of all other faiths and ethnicities in the middle east since 1967. The types of wars the United States have been involved in aren't "wars", they are what I call police action with " military" personnel. I think the reason that Iran has not already capitulated to the Israeli demands is that Iran believes (and I agree with any such belief) that Israel would be the loser should it attack Iran. By that, I means that the harm inflicted on Israel would exceed the harm that Israel might inflict on Iran. This is why, I think, that Israel would much prefer not to proceed unilaterally.
For America's part, an attack on Iran – either a unilateral attack by Israel or the two countries operating together – would result in yet another humiliation in the Middle East. This time the "enemy" has the ability and apparently the will to use its firepower and less dramatic (and perhaps more effective) weapons against the U.S. in the region and perhaps beyond.
Finally, I think Israel's too smart to proceed unilaterally because of the risks outlined above. But if I'm wrong, it will be for history to judge whether the Israelis chose a truly stupid option.

Israel will not use force against Iran unless as a last resort in case there will be no other way to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Considering that Israel does not have aircraft carriers, strategic bombers and millions of troops this means that the options Israel has to tacke Iran are rather limited and that (if Iran is allowed to obtain nuclear weapons) there is a pretty good possibility that the largest oil fields on the planet will be turned into a radioactive desert. Iran is about as complex of a foreign policy issue as they come. It boils down to a fundamental question; Does the world, and more importantly the United States, think it's essential to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons? If the answer is yes, then only military conflict will force them to abandon their efforts. Or we can collapse their economy via the world bank. Don't let them trade currency which will most likely lead to military confrontation. So in the end it's war. If we Americans don't have the stomach for that, then we need to be prepared for the fallout (no pun intended) of a nuclear armed Iran. They are not detered by mutual assured destruction. Their religious beliefs fuel the lack of fear in that regard. We're not talking about the Soviets here.

It is a mistake to think that Iranians are qualitatively different from citizens of other countries; the zealotry highlighted in the Western press is more for propaganda than for informative purposes. In short, Iran always has and will continue to act rationally. Believing that they have the right to develop nuclear energy, it is rational for them to pursue it.
It is by no means a fact that Iran intends to develop nuclear weapons; Iran denies this and cites religious grounds. We should not be so sure that a country has or wants "weapons of mass destruction" without verifiable proof. Did we learn nothing from Iraq?
Finally, even if Iran does indeed intend to develop nuclear weapons, I'm comfortable with that so long as a hostile neighbor already has them. The solution would be for Israel to commit to de-nuclearization (is there such a word?) on a verifiable basis. If that were to occur, I think this whole controversy might go away.

I can gaurentee the Israilis have a bunker buster system that can support nuclear warheads. They alreay have the bomb and have since the 70s and the required technology to optimize for earth penetration is not great. Most likely a similar, if not improved, version of the B61-11 bomb.
Even the Iranian underground facilities would be vulnerable to such an attack. Unfortunatly bumker buster nukes will most likely not penetrate deeply enough to have the explosion contained – and simulations show that the nature of th explosion will throw a large amount of highly radiative material in the air. Local casualities (Iran and to a lesser extent Afghanistan and Pakistan) would be relativly high as a result of radiation posioning from fallout.

The goal should be to show some neutrality, not get sucked into a joint Israeli-Saudi agenda of cotainment of the Shias, who have harboured a persecution complex for hundreds of years. The liberation of Iraq signalled that the US took seriously the concerns of the Shias. This has now been dented with the new tilt in US foreign policy towards the Saudi group. It's a fairly easy fix.
Ask Iran to accept Isreal's soverinity, and recognize it as a nation. In exchange, sell them nuclear materials, and assistance in developing safe Nuclear power and a strong nuclear weapons program that provides accurate and fail safed capabilities (don't want them falling into a terrorist organization's hands wthout a way to disarm them). If we have managed to live with a nuclear armed Pakistan, I think we can handle a nuclear armed Iran. Then lift our sanctions on Iran.

The answer is simple. Unless the United States truly desires to occupy Iran with infantry on the ground, they should stay out of the conflict. Any attack on Iran would just strengthen their belief that they need a nuclear weapon to defend themselves from their enemies. Israel isn't worth the cost of occupying Iran for many years in terms of American lives and dollars. An invasion will unite Iranians against their common enemy and get us caught up in another guerrilla war. Look at the lessons that history has taught us. We tried these tactics before in Vietnam and Iraq and they didn't work. They are incredibly expensive wars and too many Americans die. Simply put, we cannot afford to occupy Iran without further harming our own economy.

One thing that the world should know is that Iran has been under occupation of dark forces since 1979 so called Islamic revolution. The root of the problem is with the regime and its history of terrorism, oppression and so on inside and outside of Iran, and unless the free world recognizes and supports the opposition groups we will soon see a bigger disaster in the region. The Iranian regime has no local support, the majority of Iranians are opposed to its existence, but I'm afraid if US or Israel actually strike, this will make it harder for the resistance.

Their motivation is to have nuclear weapons, that much is clear. What's our motivation, or Israel's, or Pakistan's? We have the nukes, so we get to choose who gets to have them, right? The risk in attacking Iran has nothing to do with the attack itself. Obama understands that sanctions are unlikely to move the current regime to the bargaining table. The tighter sanctions against Iran are designed to impair, degrade and slow their ability to repair their physical infrastructure post attack.
The longer the sanctions are in place, the more degraded and weakened Iran will be on the day of the attack. A substantially weakened infrastructure is central to degrading Iran’s ability to project retaliation against their gulf neighbors in the weeks and months that follow.

taskmaster – You need to understand the nature of Nuclear Weapons. First of all one bomb cannot wipe out an entire country. The most powerful nuke ever detonated was done so by the Soviets in 1961 , the Tsar Bomba. It was a 50mega-ton yield and only destroyed everything within a 34 mile radius and damaged buildings up to a 150 mile radius. Iran is a bit larger than that. When people say Israel will strike Iran everyone just assumes one or two planes and an overnight raid. This will not be the case, first they will have to disable their ground radar and air defenses, then and only then can they safely send in the bombers, or F-15 Strike Eagles which is pretty much what Israel has for bombing missions, to put some bunker busters into the Iranian Nuclear facilities. This would take several weeks of sustained sorties and there will be Israeli casualties. God help them if they survive to be captured. Oil will skyrocket which means the price of everything will skyrocket. If this happens it's going to be painful for the entire world and since of course Russia is backing Iran what will they say? Iran has already said they would attack US Military bases in the Middle East if Israel attacks, that means we WILL retaliate and it will be alot more painful for Iran than what Israel can throw down and then what will happen. Things could quickly spiral out of control and we'd have WWIII on our hands, let's hope that calmer heads prevail. Iran doesn't really have much offensive capabilities and loves to rattle their sabre, what are they going to attack an Aegis Destroyer or Nimitz Class Carrier with a gunboat and a 50cal. I am an Iranian American and wish more than anyone that there was a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear issue. In my opinion sanctions will not work as they haven't in the past 3 decades. I truly beleive that anyone that thinks that only sanctions will make the Iranian regime stop their nuclear program is miscalculating for followig reasons:
1. Sanctions hit the people of Iran the hardest not the officials. In a western country that would have been a disaster for the government but in Iran officials don't care what will happen to people. Some Iranians actually believe that officials thinks the more people are busy earning their humble livings, the less likelihood that they will revolt.
2. Iran's regime is more and more isolated internationally and has been isolated internally for years if not decades. The regime doesnt see any option other than obtaining nuclear weapons in order to deter external and for sure internal attacks aming and its change. I don't have any doubt in my mind that this regime will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if its existese is threatened for "holy causes". It would not matter if threats from inside or outside. They will attack armless people if needes for sure even much more ruthlessly that Syrian regime is doing now. Rememeber Asad's regime is not claiming to be "god sent".
Don't believe for one second that the U.S. is immune from Iran's threats. They will cripple us before they make an attack on Israel. They will block the strait of Hormuz to disrupt our oil supply. Russia, China, Syria will make a move before Israel does. They need to keep their plans hush-hush and not be setting dates between Sept. 25 & Oct. 25. If we don't stop Iran, who will? You want a solution? Saudi Arabia and Iraq increase oil production enough to make up for the loss of Iran's. Then the US blockades Iran's oil-shipment points. A few well-placed strikes removes pipeline distribution and refineries. Iran will lash out with its military, which will last a few days. All they will have left is human-wave attacks against Iraq, which won't work. Iran collapses, the nuclear program is dismantled, and despot takes over can cozy up to China. There will be a new generation of terrorists to come out of it, but that's a minor issue compared to an ayatollah with a nuke.
I can understand Israel's concern, but would the United States really let Israel burn? Any direct attack on Israel by Iran would be an excuse for the United States to attack. If someone wants something bad enough they will figure out a way to get it - whether it is running an airplane into a building to kill thousands of people or obtaining the ability to make a nuclear weapon.

Certainly an attack on Iran is the worst solution. But, the author provides no solution how to deal with nuclear Iran rather than convince Israelis that the war is not a good option. Iranian leader already have adjusted to the idea that war would not happen because it is not good for US and Israel.
Iran has every right to have a peaceful nuclear program and enrich its own Uranium for peaceful purposes. The problem is the Iranian regime which has no solution how to manage its economy and systematically abuses its own citizens' human rights and has an anti-democratic system of government which suppress the people right to choose and elect their representatives. Such a regime could only sustain itself with creation of anti-western, anti-Israeli haltered and the support of various terrorist organizations who share such hatred. A democratic Iran will keep its peaceful nuclear program under close IAEA's supervision but will not make nuclear bomb. There will be new uprisings and this time the world fate will depend on their success. The sanctions need to freeze all assets of Iranian leadership stolen from Iranian people and put them in a trust for use of Iranian democratic movements and eventually to be transferred to Iran's new democratic government.

This issue is how to stop the Iranian regime. The idea is to do it in as non-invasive a way as possible. The US is not up for nation building, and it isn't our problem, it's the Iranian peoples. So far sanctions haven't worked, but it is reasonable to assume the Iranian people aren't happy about their economy. The question is, are the Iranian people upset enough to demand new leaders. IF the sanctions aren't working and Iran is continuing with it's nuclear program, there is no other choice but to attack and live with the consequences. It may be that an attack would cause Iran's political regime to collapse and this wold stop the program dead in it's tracks. It may be that a limited attack on their nuclear sites would start a more conventional war, but Iran can't attack the US, only US assets nearby. It is more likely that these US assets would be used to eliminate the Iranian conventional threat.
So far nothing has been done, but the US naval presence in the reason indicates the US is ready in case military action becomes necessary. Ostensibly they are their to protect Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAR and Saudi Arabia, but the only real threat is from the other side of the Gulf.
What is your basis for assuming that even a US attack would seriously damage their nuclear program. What makes you so sure it will result in toppling the regime. and what makes you think that the Russians will just stand by and let US change the region anyway they want. The world simply doesn't trust us anymore about invading countries and bringing in democracy, because right now the Iranians are mopping up the mess we made in Iraq and as soon as we leave they will start cleaning up in Afghanistan, too.What makes you think that the same or worse isn't going to happen to us in Iran? The assumption should be that they are trying to develop it as fast as possible. They certainly have a number of facilities and underground sites for a country that isn't trying!
The sanctions are working against the Iranian people, but the government appears to be the same, unwilling to change. It may be that they are backed into a corner. After all of the suffering of their people, enduring the sanctions, backing down now would appear to make them weak to their supporters.
An attack could have terrible outcomes for the entire world, but this depends on Iran. An attack on all of Iran's nuclear sites is something the Government couldn't hide. The Iranian people fearful for this lives might demand political change and insist on surrender before their infrastructure is destroyed in a full-scale war.
The US and it's allies, the Gulf nations and the entire world are all under threat from a fanatical regime. Normal people would already have changed policy in Iran to deal with the crippling sanctions. It's almost impossible to know how insane people would respond to an attack, but it's not impossible to know that sane people would overthrow leaders rather than follow them to the death.
