Rushdie: Unrest a product of the outrage machine

By Ashley Fantz, CNN

Watch Fareed Zakaria’s full interview with author Salman Rushdie on GPS, Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET

Manufactured outrage such as that seen in recent protests in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere is “much more prevalent and much more widespread” than it was when The Satanic Verses was published, the book’s author, Salman Rushdie, has told Fareed Zakaria.

Rushdie sparked controversy, and enraged Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in 1989 with his novel The Satanic Verses, a book widely praised by critics but condemned as blasphemous by Khomeini.

Back then, a fatwa was issued, and on Monday, Imam Hojatoleslam Hassan Sanei raised his little-known organization's original bounty on Rushdie by half a million dollars, to $3.3 million, according to Iran's Mehr news agency. Sanei’s organization, the 15th of Khordad Foundation, made news when it first offered its bounty, but it had in recent years largely faded from public view.

“The death sentence issued against Salman (Rushdie) was meant to dry the roots of anti-Islamic plots, and now by carrying out that sentence the sequence of these anti-Islamic plots could be uprooted and these days are the best time to do that,” Mehr quoted the imam as saying.

Rushdie's new book, Joseph Anton: A Memoir, is an account of the firestorm surrounding The Satanic Verses. But Rushdie suggests that as with the protests over The Satanic Verses, the recent unrest surrounding a controversial video that was posted on YouTube has been managed. “At the time of the attack on The Satanic Verses, what we saw was not so much a spontaneous outpouring of rage as a very carefully manufactured outpouring,” Rushdie told Zakaria.

“There was no doubt that it was highly controlled. You know, there were missives sent out from mosques to all sorts of people and they were all identical to make sure everybody was singing from the same song sheet...making the same attacks on the book in the same words.”

“Looking back at it, you can see that that was one of the early moments at which this project of manufacturing outrage began,” he said. “And that’s, of course, become much more prevalent and much more widespread.”

“And I think certainly, if we look at what’s happening now, this is very much a product of the outrage machine," Rushdie said. “Yes, there’s this stupid film...and the correct response to a stupid film on YouTube is to say it’s a stupid film on YouTube, and you get on with the rest of your life.

“So to take that and to deliberately use it to inflame your troops, you know, is a political act,” Rushdie added. “That’s not about religion, that’s about power.”

They have seen too many bad things. Now, they just need a solid, steady paycheck from long-term growth, so they can move on and build new lives with and for each other.

        Your remark is offensive!
You've failed to understand that there are many highly educated Muslims, who embrace science and technology. Unfortunately there's a gap in many Middle East countries, there we have a huge majority of popuation that lacks the opportunity to educate themselves and fall victims to demagogic machinations.

        j. von hettlingen,

How typical a German response. The Nazis collaborated with these guys in WW2. In fact the Mufti of Jerusalem was feeding them ideas how to do the holocaust. After the war, German industry helped arm first Egypt and then Iran.

Where are these educated people when their people commit crimes against other religions? They only come out when the world retaliates to their violence. Don't peddle WW2 nonsense here.

Even in the US, fundamentalists distrust education. Luckily, our government pushes education. What we will see in Egypt, :ibia, Iraq, etc. is that all of the educated, reasonable people will immigrate and the religious zealots will be left like a residue
in a poorly filtered cup of coffee. Then the west will learn the lesson, "better the devil that you know".

Despite all its problems, the public school system is what helped make America a world power. Free public education was a radical idea at the time. In lots of third-world countries, schools are run by the church. The cure for cancer, or the next iPhone won't be coming from there.

If only we could JAL, if only we could. 11 years ago 20 madmen fed by some disgusting Imam were led to beleive that they were holy warriors getting ready to take on the "Great Satan" as we have been referred to, and gthey went on to murder over 3000 Americans that fateful day. The Israelis have been telling the world for decades now about this problem, but did we listen? No, and September 11th is what we got. Jews have a saying that was coined after the death machine called Nazisim was destroyed.

Nuke Mecca and Medina and this problem will be over. They will be upset for several weeks, then they'll just fizzle out. It will be clear to the entire world by then that allah, his dog mohammed, and the clumsy Mahdi, are NEVER coming back. Just park a thermonuclear truck bomb with several miles of the dirty city, set a timer, and.....BOOM. Problems solved. That slimy meteorite they kiss will be gone too. And they can forget about that pilgrimage for the next 300-400 years. It would end their faith in one week. How long will a fool pray to a smoking hole in the ground 5 times daily. Not long. Either their god COULDN'T stop this or he WOULDN'T stop this. Either way Islam will be completely finished. Then once it has happened simply never take credit. Maybe it was the Mossad, or the CIA, or Russia. Perhaps other muslems (they like blowing each other up), could be the EU, NATO, India, or a rogue General with a nuke. Just let it rest in history as a warning and mystery. I'm not joking. Nuke Mecca and Medina now and save Western lives.

Islam is my religion..and I am proudly a Muslim.
It is the guide that tells me as a individual how behave positively, be a good parent, be a good individual in society and to love mankind..
it teaches that all people of all nations are equal....
and that we must all respect each other as a nation on Earth....
that black people and white people stand as one..no one lower in status than the other..all equal in front of Allah ( God Almighty)...
that we should learn the good of each other's nations...
That we should looks after our health, our well-being and not harm our bodies or minds with negative influences of alcohol, drugs or anything that harms one's well being and state of mind...
that we love our family, our neighbours and our friends... what goodness we want for us, we should want for them..
that we give of what we can to charity to help the poor, the homeless and the sick and remember the orphans.....
that we learn about the Earth and the Universe and all that is between them..
that we speak well of people and respect each other...
That we give thanks to God ( our Creator) every day or every time of prayer, at dawn, early afternoon, late afternoon, dusk and night fall..
That we give thanks for the blessings of food on the table, for our little children, for our brothers and sisters and our parents...
That we give thanks for every breathe we take...

Islam is peace like the touch of a single petal of the beauty of a rose..but it critics only find it thorns..open your hearts just a little..find what it is that the millions of people who are Muslims from all around the world find in their hearts.

There is gross misconceptions about Islam, but I say " You have your religion and I have mine".

        Amir,

Muslims kill anyone who wont convert. If someone converts to another religion FROM Islam, they are killed.

Why is Islam so scared of other religions to the point that they have to force people to convert on pain of death and kill those who want to move away from Islam?

Muslims fight with Hindus, Muslims fight with Jews, Muslims fight with Christians and Muslims fight with other Muslims. Muslims cant even get along with each other!!

Seems to me that all Islam teaches and preaches is fighting and killing.

I have yet to be proven wrong. Sadly.

It's really simple: If it's offensive, don't turn your modem on, don't turn your computer on, don't click your mouse a dozen times to get to YouTube, don't click "play". See, easy! If, it was my call, the so-called Muslim world would rot by itself with itself! In the end, there is no place in the world for two religions like Christianity and Islam! Sooner or later, one will have to be victor. The best anyone could hope for, is for people to grow disenchanted in all religion. Good luck, with that one! For now though, it's all a sham for those interested in keeping their power.

        Amir,
Since when does holding so called "Religious values" justify butchering ambassadors of sovereign nations in cold blood – for no fault of their own? The US Ambassador to Libya was a good man, who actually adored the Libyan people and was sincerely trying to help them, instead he got the proverbial "stab in the back", that is truly disgusting and not acceptable in any civilized society. Also like the saying goes, all it takes for Evil to Happen is for Good People to do nothing. I just don't see the so called "good" Muslims condemning the riots and the killings over this dumb movie. All you folks have to do is not click on it and ignore it, it'll die a natural death. But the Islamic wordd chooses to behave like a petulant child, creating a self perpetuating cycle of violence and creating even more hatred in the eyes of the West. Please grow up!!

Our religious values don't include acting like rabid animals and going on a murderous rampage every time we perceive an "insult" to our religion. Our God provides us with protection, he doesn't need us to protect him. He's not that weak.

        Amir,
I don't like to comment much on news, but I can see that those who are responding to you are irrational. They are psychologically full of cognitive biases. The make the rule out of the example and over-gerenalize from small sample. Looking at a small part of the picture doesn't tell you which the whole picture does look like. They look at the judge the doctrine from a small number of its followers but they don't look into the doctrine its self; rather, they keep replying what they hear from the others. After reading their comments I find that the irrational people who carried out the riots are no different than the irrational people commenting about islam. Both are tantamount in mentality, but different in tongue and faces.

I have never seen a moderate muslim they say they are, but they are not. Anger, violence and radicalism. If it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, It is a duck. Power over poor and uneducated people is all the muslim clergy is after. Amazing how many truly great ideas have come from the middle east during the dark ages and now with all of the technology available they value mud huts and a religion that is far from logical.

The people there have the same view of your people as you do of them and that's the problem. They cannot forget Horshema, Nagasaki, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and many more. They only look at the violence movies and so on and so on. I lived in the US and Canada and I know that people in NA are different than what they think of; I lived also in Egypt and I know that the people there are different than what you think of. You just derive theorems from the news and they do the same. So who's the one not using the logic?

      • CMAN

        TamOra,
You are right in that the protests and killings were done by a minority of muslims. I believe that (hopefuly) most muslims do not condone the behavior of the few. However, a judgement must be drawn when it concerns the lives of other human beings. It is not just news that the ambasador was killed in rioting as a result to extremist outrage against a youtube video, it is fact. I believe the main fundamental difference between U.S. ideaology and Middle Eastern ideaology is freedom of religion and speech. We as Americans are so ingrained with the idea of saying, writing, and videoing what we desire to communicate that we fail to understand the concept of killing because of an insult to our religious or personal beliefs. Even if it is done by any minority. And neither do we want to understand the fundmentalism behind killing with those that have insulted us. It is detestable no matter what religion it comes from. Yes, we definitely have serious misconceptions about each others culture. No, those differences do NOT justify murder.

I think the best anyone could hope for is for these [all] people to learn there are 300+million US Citizens, we do not have just one voice. There are Americans that truly wish they could support your cause, but when the violence and killing starts. We have no choice but to our backs, please understand this is not personal, its just, we have learned through out our protest history. Nothing gets accomplished when your protest turns violent, you have lost your support base when that takes place. If I wanted to worship a apple tree, it should be of no concerns to anyone, but, if I get upset because someone makes fun of me or my apple tree. This can only happen if I am insecure and question my beliefs, there can be no other truth, that would cause anyone to become violent and state killing others.

It is amazing how many Muslins appear to be slaves to their religion. Come on! Get a clue! Stop being so fanatical about religion, get some education, develop critical thinking, become a part of the World. Develop a little sophistication. The most important thing in life is continuing education to uplift yourselves, not this ridiculous pandering to the pedagoguery of a a 6th century religion (much less, a 1st century religion, i.e, Christianity). The sooner people realize that religion is really not particualrly important, the better the whole world will be. That includes ALL religions.

Come on! Think about it. Do you believe in ghosts, UFO's, Jin? Think Rushdie made the most intelligent and correct response possible:
Rushdie said.

Are you kidding, this very website uses it every day. It is not just the tea party either. CNN and the other outlets all do their best to work everyone into a lather about "women's health", "Wall St. v. Main St.", and "Global Warming".

While doing so you see no coverage of the fact that in places where abortion is widely accepted, it is already widely available, or that there are still plenty of people traveling around the country, going to Disneyland, and buying big TV's even though the middle class has supposedly disappeared, or that things like mismanagement of national forests has largely contributed to the insane fire seasons we have, even though global warming is often cited as the primary contributor.

The media machine, like muslim extremists, have an ax to grind. If a story is close to the narrative it is massaged so it fits the message, and if they are too far outside the narrative, they are ignored completely.

It's true that everyone wants to and likes to have something to get mad about. (It's the result of cultures that teach people that they CAN'T get mad and that they have to be calm; when there is an outlet for anger it pours out.) When anger transforms into unbridled violence, however, is when the line is crossed. Sacking our embassies is NOT the way to show displeasure. Luckily we as Americans wouldn't resort to sacking their embassies in retaliation; the embers would be fanned into a global wildfire if we were to keep going quid pro quo.

Isn't Islam wonderful, let's be more specific, because if your going to blame ALL religion regardless of core belief, then that means what a person believes doesn't matter, and we know that's not true. You can't lump ALL religions together because the all have different world views. And BTW Secular Humanism IS a world View and a Religious Belief despite people's insistence it's not a religion, you don't need a deity to qualify as a religion.

      September 21, 2012 at 2:00 am | Reply
      • basho1644

No, that is not correct. You can't just label any world view as "religion". Religion, as commonly understood, involves in an essential way a fairytale-type belief in a deity for which there is not a single shred of evidence. This cannot be said of either science or secular humanism. If a view does not involve some literal notion of a "God", then it is perhaps a philosophy, but it is not a "religion". Hijacking the term "religion" and applying it to other, much more sensible and defensible outlooks is a typical stratagem of the religious to try to legitimize themselves - they have no legitimacy of their own, and they know it, so they attempt to usurp it by equating themselves with legitimate views by application of the word "religion" to everything. I repeat, in no sense can secular humanism be considered a religion. I've even seen similar attempts to characterize atheism as a religion! We can't stand for this sort of BS obfuscation of the meanings of words!

        September 21, 2012 at 5:36 am |
      • Jonesyman

@Basho – Quite incorrect. There are many recognized sects of Buddhism and Hinduism (to name a few) that are strict materialists yet these are both clearly religious systems. So your notion that religions can only be those organizations that express belief in a deity is clearly flawed. Yes, your definition is useful for mundane daily use about certain topics and regions but it lacks the technical specificity that is necessary to deal with kaleidoscopic of religious views that have been held throughout world history, unless of course you consider the world to be limited to the shores of Europe over the last few thousand years.

        September 21, 2012 at 10:46 am |
      • basho1644

@jonesyman: I don't have time for a lengthy reply. I'm well aware of how the term "religion" has been used to describe philosophical systems such as Buddhism - in which there is no deity, so I submit that such uses of the word simply lead to confusion. The kinds of religion that are at the root of so many problems in the world today (as well as historically) are the theistic ones - which would clearly exclude secular humanism (the point of my original objection) and atheism as well as Buddhism. Anyway, let's use a word with greater "technical specificity" instead: theism. Theism is what we're really talking about, in the context of this article and its discussion, as a groundless and pernicious worldview.

        September 21, 2012 at 1:39 pm |

Let's just ignore those pesky Crusades, Inquisition, Salem witch trials, etc., etc., etc....

The reality is that education is the only thing that will free the people. As Christian nations underwent technological advancements, this, in turn, created industry and therefore jobs. Skilled labor requires education, and suddenly the masses had greater access to schooling, etc. Better education means better critical thinking. But this was much easier for Christian nations that already had widespread education – albeit poor – and access to large amounts of wealth.

As the Arab Spring has demonstrated, there is a base from which a similar transition can occur across the Middle East. But these educated individuals have largely lacked centralized leadership and a common message. It seems to me that the "manufactured outrage" – the deliberate ignition of human ordnance – is an effort to subdue those who threaten the status quo. It is an effort to make large poor and uneducated Muslim populations incapable of hearing the message of the Arab Spring by filling their ears with hate.

You need to educate yourself on Hitler a bit more. Religion was a key motivator for him. I don't think anyone is inferring that an atheist is incapable of committing atrocious acts, but when tallying up those acts over the course of history, far more were at the hands of those purporting to be guided by a higher power–and it is generally those that went on for a considerable length of time because the populace bought it hook line and sinker, because "how could God possibly lead us astray?"

No matter how bad it may sound, we need to put a stop to the immigration of all citizens of the Mideastern countries until they get their own house under control. Any MIdeastern students that apply to our universities should be stopped from enrollment and entry into the USA. We should cut off all Foreign Aid to these countries, pull our national interests out including all Military actions, bases (after we distroy them so others cannot just have a turn key operation.) and have a POTUS that has a set and can live up to his promises. We need to get the attention of the Mideastern contries that we will no longer tollerate their sponsored terrorism. If indeed they continue then we are at war and we should target those that plot against us, like the religeous leaders. Teams can set up a mile away and pop them with a single bullet. If they know they will die they will stop this nonsince. In the mean time let their "outrage machine" burn their own home down until they have nothing. All western countries should do the same thing. If China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea want to support them, I say let them. They cannot afford it either. If we have another strike on the USA let it be known that the Kabala will be history, and that will stop most of them in their tracks. Then outfit C-130's with spray booms and spray a line of pig grease along the borders of each troubling country just for good measure.

The Satanic verses? What do you know about the unseen that Islam reveals? The angels and demons that exist in the heavens and earth. Satan and his followers live in a different dimension apart from humans, and whisper evil into the conscience of humans. Angels circulate in the atmosphere to praise God and are able to aid humans when commanded by Him. The Satanic verses he claims? There are clear examples of the ongoing horrors that these demons commit onto people around the world. Mostly against the wicked who are lost or refuse to believe and practice the truth. The devils are triumphant when they get people to preach evil verses. There is no doubt in His book.

They multiply with multiple wives and have many children, and there is nothing wrong with that but they do not adjust to thier host country. Instead they form them own commuites and keep their own laws. They grow at staggering rates and are now taking over countries like Denmark, France, Belgum, and others. Their goal is world domination and the elimination of the nonbeliver or infidels. Either we stop them now or we are doomed.

One of the BIGGEST reasons the protests (outrages) were managed back in Rushdie's days was because Muslims/Arabs were under more authoritarian and mostly Communist-leaning governments.
Another reason to be skeptical about the so called Arab/Muslim Spring or any form of "freedom" for them. They're less of a threat to others when they're under a strong thumb.

Time for the Western World to walk away and let these suckers get on with it. We've got too much to live for. If they want to torch themselves and their societies, let them get along with it. No sense in wasting any more Western lives on their garbage.

Hey Glueball. You are really wrong about that. It is actually the opposite. It is the lack of respect for God and the creation that He has made that has brought us to the point we are at. Just because someone does something stupid and violent in the name of God doesn't mean that His laws and ways are bad. Most of the kingdoms of this world that have thived and been prosperous have adherd to the principals and laws set forth in the Holy Bible. Looking at the source of the begining of the writing of this book, Moses, you will see a rich and power figure that has stood the test of time for millinums. It is when he is absent society falls.

Smokey, that justification only works if one elects to believe in your biblical fairy tales. Some of us choose to work with empirical evidence rather than base our beliefs out of some fear that an invisible man in the sky is keeping a scorecard of our good and bad deeds.

The film makers have done nothing wrong at all.

IT only depicts a story of what was written in the q'uran.

Mankind makes films based on books and stories more so now than ever, but in the old days in theaters.

So mindless reaction to a intelligent fact and truth telling film based on a book is lunacy to be blunt.

No mindless reaction is sanctioned by any movies otherwise, it proves a whole group and society has rational, logical thought missing. Again proven to be correct.

Facts and the Truth is something that seems to be elusive in the middle east.

I am all for freedom of the press. I understand its purpose, most of its history and its impact on humanity.
Now having said that, isn't there also some RESPONSIBILITY to be taken for what is written ? The movie in question is alike to a small boy about to whack a hornet's nest with a baseball bat ! Just in general, no one really benefits by such an act, cause it makes the hornets really mad ! Do you agree ?
Even if the criticism of that religion is 100% accurate, what good comes from making people mad ? It seems to me to lack of common sense.

If we Americans can't see the difference, or allow others to convince us that these are the same, then we don't deserve the democracy and freedom we enjoy.

Pathetic that we allow bounties to be out there against our citizens. No matter what he did, a bounty is not justified, nor is acceptable. It also proves how crazy the group is and how weak their faith is – that they feel a need to kill anyone who disagrees with them instead of using words to protect/voice/back their views.

Yes, I know that Rushdie didn't kill anyone, but to these wingnuts writing a book that could be misconstrued as insulting is worse than killing someone.

Of course it's a manufactured distraction. This is an organized effort by North Korea, China, Russia and anti-American elements in the Middle East influenced by Al-Qaeda to take the spotlight off Syria.

Don't people realize that if Syria falls and there are no extremist elements to control the rebels then Iran is in Jeopardy? If the Syrian regime demise brings about the end of Iran, where will Chinese, North Korean and Russian influence and weapons markets wind up? Iran is the key to ending this conflict. A very poor cheap movie about hatred, indeed insulting to Muslims, but regardless, the expressions of one sick man. Imagine the power and attention the Muslim response has given to this producer of trash.
For me, it is difficult to respect a religion whose leaders take advantage of something like this to provoke the ignorant of their adherents to murder.

When for example people say insulting thing about Jesus, most Christians are able to see that the words have no meaning, just hatred. Real spiritual leaders fight hate with love.

I think many muslims do not believe in the violence they see very single day on the news. I find it quite disturbing in some ways, but actually not a surprise in many others. If there is to be peace in this world, we do need to learn to get along. I do not agree with the actions of some in any religion, but preaching hate wins no friends. Jews are no the problem in this world. It is evil, it is Satan. It is not Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Taoists, anyone. The ills of this world are found in the father of lies, Satan. Not only that, Jews have been targets for thousands of years. Christians are as well. Muslims have been as well. Every single religion has been targeted at one time or another, but if you are calling for the annihilation of million of people, then you are not human.

Muslims have been pretty well controlled since their defeat of the muslim empire of Turkey which was the Ottoman. They were a cruel bunch who treated all their other muslims like dirt for the most part and christians and jews basically as walking dead. But in the last 40 years with technology the rise of the radical warriors is tangible in nations like afgan, lebanon, and pakistan. Still they are a small minority but remember 1% radicals overthrew the Shah and the 99% have suffered ever since under Islam. Small percentages in Europe are have major influence on law and culture. In New Zealand all 100% of meat is prepared to not offend the 1% muslim. In the US and around the world most people including muslim and christian only care about family, food, love, work, etc. As Americans have been dumbed down on principles of freedom, bill of rights, natural law, etc we are now subject to being overtaken by secular humanism or nationalism or even islamic influence eventually.

The outrage machine is alive and well in the US also. The Christian outrage machine created this movie, it motivates the intense hatred of Obama, the birther "issue", it motivates Nancy Grace, Fox News, the "education" debates, the immigration debates, the evolution and climate change debates.

To look at the outrage machine in Islamic countries is to look at ourselves in the mirror, and not recognize that they are us.

    So, let's briefly analyse this...

"Imam Hojatoleslam Hassan Sanei raised his little-known organization's original bounty on Rushdie by half a million dollars, to $3.3 million...The death sentence issued against Salman (Rushdie) was meant to dry the roots of anti-Islamic plots, and now by carrying out that sentence the sequence of these anti-Islamic plots could be uprooted and these days are the best time to do that,” Mehr quoted the imam as saying."

So, we have another Islamic religious leader, not just some street thug, ordering a hit on a person. The Islamic religious leader has just increased the payment for that hit. And the reason for the hit is that he and many other Muslims do not like what Rushdie had to say about Islam.

So, as long as you go along with Muslims, as long as you cowtow to them and their MANY demands, they make great neighbors. But, if you do not like something about Islam, or it's teachings, or beliefs – watch out – you might become a target.

And all over the world, weenies are giving in to these people. Proof that terror works.

Islam is what it is – a terrorist organization cloaked behind a curtain of warped religious beliefs. It is not a religion of peace and tolerance. And there will never be peace where Islam is the major belief system because Muslims cannot even get along in their own countries.

Because every thinking being has a right to an opinion. And if any group or individual tries to abrogate that right through violence or censorship, that group needs to be disbanded, that individual stopped, so that civilized human beings can continue to argue, discuss and seek truth through peaceful means.

I respect Rushdie and what he says, but he makes it sound like the outrage isn't real, and if you cut the head off, it will go away. Like Glenn Beck rallies, like Occupy Wall Street, it is very real, but it is being directed. It is the result of 22+ years of the US bombing and killing hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Iraq, of supporting a Zionist government forcibly transferring Muslims out of Israel and Palestine, of CIA involvement in almost every Muslim country, of giving weapons to dictators like Saddam, the Shah of Iran, Mubarak, and in Saudi Arabia. This rage is real, and it may wax and wane in focus, but it is only going to get worse. It is not going away because we take out a few al-Qaeda planners.

Freedom of speech is what helps societies sort out what is true among different competing ideas.Perhaps the Muslims will grow accustomed to hear and seeing critical views of their religion as they become part of the whole world.Blaming the making of a video that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad as a excuse to do this harm is ridiculous by civil standards. This is an example of irrational religious ideology. Many people in the radical Islamic countries reside in something like European Dark Ages and need to be enlightened with access to outside sources of information. Such ignorance can be easily exploited by Al Qaeda extremism. As Thomas Friedman has repeatedly said Islam needs modernity. Growing up in the strict Islamic countries has much community pressure forcing people not question the religious leaders and leads to inhumane actions such as this. Outspoken critics are silenced by threats of violence. Some are then ripe for extremists to incite them to violence and in this case Al Qaeda may be in that role. Ayaan Hirsi Ali writes about this from the point of view of growing up in Somali, escaping an arranged marriage, becoming a member of Danish parliament and then arriving in the U.S. She describes her history of each location in her books "Infidel" and "Nomad". The strict Islamic societies heavily employ the threat of a painful eternity if people don't conform to what the interpreters of the Quran tell them. Even her mother said she hoped she would be punished in hell for escaping from an arranged marriage. The threat of eternal hell after one is dead is the greatest and longest living hoax in history.

This isn't really even about America. When it boils down to it, this is about the Muslim people and their society. They have one side that wants to roll back the clocks and another side that realizes that even if they can get their financial and social issues 'on course' they will still be a century behind most of the developed world. There is to much economic tension and strife, and it will only get worse, it doesn't matter who is in charge here. But we need a President that realizes that and not one that wants to 'cowboy up' because that solves nothing, it just drags us down.

Rushdie is exactly right. If you look closely at some of the many video shots, much of what the media is reporting on are small groups of individuals made to look larger by the camera angle. Pull back and there's a crowd watching them, but not actively participating. The "muslim rage" and wave of uprisings is being managed and orchestrated, not only by the political leaders of radical Islam and their media outlets, but by OUR OWN western media. At best, our reporters and their parent companies are willing dupes in this process.

At worst, we too are manufacturing outrage. Just read all the political tripe that's aimed at making things look like they are out orf control, aaaaaaand the President's fault. There's GOP mileage in getting people riled up to believe that. So, "muslim rage" gets used as a talking point. There are advertisement slots to be sold and eyeballs to control, and so the big business of media reporting wants to take these incidents and paint a big, dramatic, scary picture. Then everybody's watching. Heck, if they could they'd find a way to work in a clip of the Challenger shuttle exploding for good, juicy, gut-wrenching measure.

Sadly, controlling the media to make something serve your purpose or to sell (or both) has poisoned the news industry as much as any other industry. Used to be that we could trust what was reported on as "news". Now much of it is infotainment, bloviating, tripe. What used to be "investigative reporting" has been replaced with "instigative reporting" – why bother finding out the facts when you can lie or distort to suit the story, fan the flames, and watch the ratings spike?

So, yes this outrage "wave" is being coordinated. But so is the response on our side. Neither is helping.

We are using symmetric warfare against asymmetric warfare. It's not like a football game, where the teams wear different colors and we know who's who. What makes the situation in the middle east so unique, is the terrorists have a ready-made army. They don't have to spend money outfitting it. When they need it, they just push the right buttons.

Rushdie is 100% correct. In fact, start asking these protestors specifics about the trailer or film to see if they have actually watched any of it. Of course they haven't. These protests are not about a film or religion. If they were, the outrage would have been long, long ago because this is not the first video to poke fun at Mohammed. YouTube has an impressive library of video slamming or making fun of Mohammed and Islam. In fact, there are even videos making fun of Jesus and other religious figures.

Too much blood shed on all sides for this to get fixed in the next 50 years. Arab Spring allowed freedom but no direction.
Arab Muslims only know how to protect their religion with violence and not by intellectualism. One way street for Islam.

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

All of the manufactured outrage is the best publicity the film could hope for. Had the protests not occurred I feel sure the majority of Americans would never have heard of the film. The same goes for other nations as well. Why do they wish to draw attention to something so very obviously ignorant?

Jesus is a fabrication of the 1st and 2nd centuries to grab power by convincing ignorant masses that their religion was the right one because of their claim of a "real" flesh god. Of course not one single contemporary historian, roman record, contemporary work of art, contemporary writer, exists to substantiate the jesus myth.

Any thinking person has always known what islam is – it is organized political units whose aim is to subdue the world and kill everyone who stand sin their way. why is this so hard to understand or believe in the face of decades of their terrorist murderous tactics that rage stronger today than they ever did. What would we say if the Pope decided to kill someone , or the Presbyterians or the Baptists? Not just some lone wacko out to kill abortion doctors No . But the head of the church – to kill as policy. What so many do not realize is that islam has no head – all the imams are little popes in their own right with the power of life and death. We better watch out – these lunatics are hell bent on domination at all costs.

Actually there were 2 fatwa's issue by Khomeni, one on Salman Rushdie and the other on Dr. Rashad Khalifa who discovered the Quran's divine mathematical code based on 19. Dr. Khalifa was assassinated in Tucson Jan 31, 1990 for his translation of the Quran – and for quoting verses that those who claimed adherence to that scripture were its worst enemies and would be disowned by Muhammad.

Rushdie suffered the physical threat from a radical Islamic cleric for what he wrote. This is the type of action that allow myths to be presented as fact rather than subject to analysis.

Every thinking being has a right to an opinion. And if any group or individual tries to abrogate that right through violence or censorship, that group needs to be disbanded, that individual stopped, so that civilized human beings can continue to argue, discuss and seek truth through peaceful means.

But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and like a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knows, and you know not." [Another translation reads:] "Warfare is ordained for you."
Qur'an:4:95 "Not equal are those believers who sit at home and receive no injurious hurt, and those who strive hard, fighting Jihad in Allah's Cause with their wealth and lives. Allah has granted a rank higher to those who strive hard, fighting Jihad with their wealth and bodies to those who sit (at home). Unto each has Allah promised good, but He prefers Jihadists who strive hard and fight above those who sit home. He has distinguished his fighters with a huge reward."
Bukhari:V4B52N44 "A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, 'Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad in reward.' He replied, 'I do not find such a deed.'"
Bukhari:V1B2N25 "Allah's Apostle was asked, 'What is the best deed?' He replied, 'To believe in Allah and His Apostle Muhammad.' The questioner then asked, 'What is the next best in goodness?' He replied, 'To participate in Jihad, religious fighting in Allah's Cause.'"

The major reason why we even listen to these " Arab / muslim " " rage" is just plainly because we are all afraid of them. Afraid that they won't give us oil. And afraig that they are willing to die for their foolishness as much as we want to stay alife

Long term solution against Islamic violence & irrationality is a MASSIVE CONVERSION OF MUSLIMS TO CHRISTIANITY, preferably to any Middle Eastern Christian Church which share the same language, culture and traditions as Muslims but NOT their SATANIC Islamic faith.

news flash!your religion bro seems more SATANIC by far–as it allows you to practice violence--insult others to provoke rage for no reason, pick a fight--i mean you are okay with christian maniacs killing kids in your schools/malls and you don't blame the whole religion–but when a muslim miscreant kills one you try to defame all !you even think it right to go and kill innocent men.women & children thousands of miles away, destroy their homes rob their oil & wealth and THAT'S NOT TERRORISM ! WE DON'T CALL YOU "CHRISTIAN TERRORIST/EXTREMISTS"!

The Islamists can gain some pointers from the Mormons, as they do not tolerate any criticism from within their church. What surprises me more about the LDS is that they don't cut off hands, or shoot their daughters.
They need some catching up, as both religions do.

For example .. people criticize islam but dont understand that all religion basically teach same modesty , even hindu religion teaches women to cover their heads .. its been our world culture for hundreds of years that women covered their heads ... Bible clearly says that women who dont cover their heads , their hair should be shaved off , so you know , islam infact is more lighter among the older religions , like thier waqs no limit to a women a man can marry , but islam put a limit 1400 years ago when poeple had many many wives , The only religious book to have these words " Marry Only One " is Muslim Quran .

How can covering a woman's head be considered "modesty"?
If an islamist saw my elderly mother's ankle, would that turn him on?

Rushdie suffered the physical threat from a radical Islamic cleric for what he wrote. This is the type of action that allow myths to be presented as fact rather than subject to analysis. The reaction of the some in Islamic societies is orchestrated by the leaders as Rushdie said. They wish to hold the people back from modern life.

Even her mother said she hoped she would be punished in hell for escaping from an arranged marriage and a husband she didn't know. The threat of eternal hell after one is dead is the greatest and longest living hoax in history.

    muslims on tolerance:
Qur'an 9:71 "O Prophet, strive hard [fighting] against the unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be harsh with them. Their abode is Hell, an evil refuge indeed."
Qur'an 8:59 "The infidels should not think that they can get away from us. Prepare against them whatever arms and weaponry you can muster so that you may terrorize them."
Qur'an 4:168 "Those who reject [Islamic] Faith, Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to any path except the way to Hell, to dwell therein forever. And this to Allah is easy."
Qur'an 4:114 "He who disobeys the Apostle after guidance has been revealed will burn in Hell."
Ishaq:344 "We smote them and they scattered. The impious met death. They became fuel for Hell. All who aren't Muslims must go there. It will consume them while the Stoker [Allah] increases the heat. They had called Allah's Apostle a liar. They claimed, 'You are nothing but a sorcerer.' So Allah destroyed them."
Qur'an 33:60 "Truly, if the Hypocrites stir up sedition, if the agitators in the City do not desist, We shall urge you to go against them and set you over them. They shall have a curse on them. Whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain without mercy – a fierce slaughter – murdered, a horrible murdering."

HINDU KALI – GODDESS OF VIOLENCE/TERRORISM

A recent report by United Press trust of India (UPI) stated that during the past three years more than 2,500 young boys and girls were sacrificed to goddess Kali in India. Another of AFP's recent reports say: hundreds of young boys and virgin girls are sacrificed every month for the deity Kali. In one case Rama Sewak hacked his eight year old son to death in broad daylight in Delhi because goddess Kali had told him he would come back to life and bring him good fortune. Bloodthirsty Kali is worshipped openly the length and breadth of India. Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. She is also known as Durga, Devi, Shaktima, Uma and Parvathi in other manifestations. The priest of Delhi, Kali Bari, says that a child sacrificed to Kali ensures a man the birth of a son. Human sacrifices are also made to these gods or goddesses, either to appease them or to ask favours of them.

We continue to monitor the economic, political and cultural bubble burst/malaise in India and are very concerned with the continued state of deterioration. At this point, we restate our view that India is in a precarious situation and that a geo-political implosion is imminent (if not already in process) and the need of the hour. As you will recall, India has an unmanageable large population mired in poverty and we are spinning our wheels trying to prop it up. Additionally, it is also too big of a geographical unit to govern. Americans now need to focus on its own people and cannot afford to handout more financial and technological aid to India.

We believe that this defragmentation of India will unleash boundless opportunities and uber economic demand that will be beneficial to US and Europe and help pull them out of current recessionary trends. We pray for the events to unfold peacefully and in a harmonious manner for the people of India and its neighbors.

Tragically, in India people are dying of hunger. Why are low caste poor Hindus prohibited from eating beef? People stop their cars, and sit for hours waiting for a cow to clear the roadway, thinking it to be sacred. In India cow meat is cheaper than other available meats. Instead of these Brahmins taking care of the low caste peoples of India, they are doing their best to save their "holy" cows instead. This is evil. According to Valmith's Ramayana, God Rama "ATE" meat. So then "why" have these Brahmins given up beef-eating? It's hypocrisy within their own religion.

Rushdie was one of the input sources for the project of manufacturing a product of outrage machine. When he found that there are now many sources which are deterrant to his business, he started finding fault in other sources. A day is not far off when he would admit that he was wrong most of the time, and that there should not be a Total Freedom.

Until the western societies can get to know that Islam and the Muslim word is a society that ignorance dominants people perception, Arabs and Muslims are the worst man kind on earth. Unless Americans start to deal with these folks the way they have to be dealt with ....we shall continue to have in security in our societies, civilization and beliefs. if one depicts Prophet Mohammed it's an insult. Why, and if one is civilized enough why do you have to be insulted and go wild like an animal to kill innocent people about the depiction of Mohammed.

We remain extremely appalled and highly concerned about the continued medieval cultural and barbaric social practices prevalent in the name of Hinduism in India. Much to our chagrin, the human rights organizations are either turning a blind eye towards these injustices or are being paid off to look the other way. We are particularly aware of the victims of such practices, namely, young children and women especially those women who are pregnant and are bearing a female embryo.

They are being mistreated or simply sacrificed in the name of their deities. To the civilized world such atrocious behavior is repulsive and is condemned in the strongest words. We urge the Indian Hindus to immediately cease and desist from such unacceptable norms. To them we say the world is watching and will see to it that justice prevails.
