Clinton: It's all about the turnout

Fareed Zakaria speaks with former U.S. President Bill Clinton about Barack Obama’s chances of winning the presidential election in November. To watch the full interview, tune into GPS this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET.

If you look at the numbers, Obama is now leading in pretty much all of the swing states.  And if you've seen these polls that are reasonably accurate, it could translate into an electoral landslide. Do you think that's possible?

It’s possible. But we still don't know who's going to vote. You know, he won an enormous victory among people under 30. But they are disproportionately likely now to be unemployed or stuck in part-time jobs, to be frustrated.

I think for all kinds of reasons, they’re unlikely to vote in large numbers for Governor Romney, but will they vote?

How much will the vote be lessened or reduced by the fact that in Florida, except for four counties, the pre-election voting, the advanced voting, has been cut down to eight days and doesn’t include the Sunday before the election, which is an arrow aimed straight at the heart of the African-American churches, who pull up the church buses on the Sunday before the election and take elderly people who have no cars or people who are disabled to the polls so they can vote?

How much is all that going to affect the turnout?

I've never, in my lifetime, nobody has ever done anything quite this blatant. So I still think you have to assume it's going to be a close race, assume it's a hard fight and then fight through it. But I think the president has the advantage now. We did have a very good convention. He got a good boost out of it.

I think people kind of get that we were so damaged that we couldn’t be back to full health in four years. So the real question is, who’s got the better plan for the future?

I think he’ll win that argument.

There is just one president who did not get the second time around. Look at the statistics. By the way, I believe Clinton was the best President ever in my lifetime.

Clinton was in office for 8 years and left office with a surplus and a positive reaction from the public. Had Gore used him in the campaign- he would have been President.
He currently enjoys the highest ratign of any recent ex- proesident – alive or dead, including Kennedy.
I'd say he is doing OK

Clinton had the highest approval ratings in US history when he left office, narrowly beating Reagan. Polls showed during the impeachment trial most people in the country didn't care he committed adultery and lied about it. They didn't even want the impeachment trial to happen. He had nothing of himself to save. It's just a running gag now like JFK's affairs with Marilyn Monroe.

Gore lost because he's an arrogant pompous ass. People tend to base their vote off of likability. Romney has that problem, but his problems run much deeper than just the fact he's an out-of-touch richtard who's attempting to purchase an election. He's spent the majority of his campaign being dishonest about himself. Now, after that hidden camera incident he's finally having to be honest about who he is. So, now every single time he opens his mouth to say something it benefits Obama's re-election because it's something so mind-bogglingly moronic and backward fueled by his sheltered privileged life away from the hardships of his electorate. In an attempt to be more honest he's released another year's worth of tax returns which show in really nice detail what we knew already to be true where he stashes his fortune in safe havens across the world to avoid having to pay taxes. The general public doesn't like that kind of thing, especially when he's to be elected to try and solve budget problems. Last but not least he's a Republican to whom much of the country (according to heavy polling) find to be obstructionist and the primary cause of the prolonging of economic troubles. He's got to literally be one of the worst nominees for President in US history.

Deniz...Clinton enjoyed a growth oriented economy based on the false baseline support of the Internet explosion...which now Bush and Obama have faced in its fiscal reality. But, better to be lucky than good.

Actually, Johnson was re-elected once and declined to run for the third term. However, he was only elected once – as he assumed office the first term.

Ford was never elected the first time. He was VP when Nixon resigned and took office. Ford didn't win when the next election came.

There has been more than one President that has not won the second term. Bush Sr. Jimmy Carter, Taft, Hoover, Ford, Harrison, Cleveland, Van Buren and probably some more that I can't think of right now.

Once again, the Republicans want to steal the election. They now have new pre-election voting rules aimed at African-American voters in Fla.. They created redistricting and voter ID laws that seek to restrict minorities voters who tend to vote Democratic. Republicans are disgusting and show how they will attempt anything to get one of their own in office.

The TGOP MUST be defeated. Get out and VOTE a straight Democractic ticket. The cheaters and stonewallers MUST be thrown out by the people.

Yes, vote for Romney, the tax evasion specialist who won't show his taxes, the rich guy who will put us back on the same course Bush had started, the guy who's written off 1/2 of the country as people he doesn't care about, the guy who loves firing people, the anti patriot who hides and invests money offshore, the venture capitalist who buys companies so he can suck their pensions dry and load the company with debt that he pockets and finally buries the company and its workers...

Yes, he's PERFECT for the job!!!

We must get rid of the guy who has turned around the financial collapse, saved GM, made health care available for more Americans than ever in history, a reasonable guy, a man who had to work his way up from humble beginnings.

After all, there's nothing wrong in this country that can't be fixed with a few more hearty tax cuts for the wealthy paid for by us "little people" along with a ton of high-dollar defense contracts! Go Mitt!

Not a smart answer because Romney will devastate everything you will need in the future. Healthcare, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security. Romney also made his money by investing in companies and stocks. He's basically a Wall St. guy who didn't care what he had to do to turn a profit. I have a degree in administration, and believe me, what he did doesn't mean he could run the country.

Russ, Your degree in Administration does NOT qualify you to make those statements. My degree in Human Resources is much better qualified to adequately sum up what Romney can and cannot bring to the table than yours does....so get off your soap box and stick to the facts. Romney has money and that bugs the hell out of you. GET OVER IT. I don't care one iota whether we are Reps or Dems, I just don't want America to become a third world country and that is exactly where we are headed under Obama's Administration. We need Romney and Paul Ryan more than ever before.

Sadee you don't know what Mitt plans to do either, no Repub does. Far as Romney goes, he has flip flopped on every single thing he says. And if you think less regulation for Wall Street is what's needed to save America, it's pitiful. Even Greenspan admitted he was wrong and never to do it again, and that was W's guy. Facts are healhcare costs have to be reeled in, and the gop pushing something like medicare d thru again (which is seriously bankrupting this country with the no bid handouts to the drug companies) is suicide for this country. The GOP won't bring out W because he's toxic, yet all of Romney's economic plans are the same nonsense that got us in this mess to start with.

Problem with that is, we all know the network that doesn't give any facts and pretend they do. They have half the country convinced there is a conspiracy to bar the truth. Now we have these people trying to bar Obama from being on ticket, barring the independant running from being on the ticket, supressing voters rights. Things have gotten this bad in this country for that very reason and as a country it's getting time to address it.

What the Regressives hate is that a Progressive holds the White House. It was true under Clinton and now under Obama. Political positions play no part in the hatred, just that they aren't the party with The Power. They blocked Clinton at every turn and now Obama. When states go red it is an indication that state's IQ has been diluted by inbreeding among its residents. They have lost the ability of critical thought.

Since the DNC and all the democrats are supporting Obama without question, then I have to assume that democrats agree and condone the shameless treatment of Netanyahu and Israel. By extension, democrats can be assumed to be uniformly against Israel and its safety. I think the republicans should point that out to everyone in those battleground states and let's see what the polls show.
obama has the time to be on the View and attend JayZ and Beyonce concerts but absolutely no time to meet with the leader of one of our most important allies...and staunchest allies in the Middle East. That's a very clear message being sent by the democrats to Israel and to the American Jewish Community.
Obama is willing to play games with Iran and its acquisition of nuclear weapons on the back of the safety or most importantly the very existence of Israel. The DNC and the democrats condone those actions...Well...I think the republicans should make that very clear to the American Jewish Community across the country and in the swing states.

Voting for obama is voting against the very survival of Israel. Any American Jew who votes for obama is voting for someone who doesn't care whether Israel is wiped off the face of the earth or not...This American Jew will not be voting for any democrat and definitely NOT obama.

Mr Clinton was lucky to be the president when high tech boom happened, once in many generations has such a boom been seen. It is said that the previous boom of such magnitude happened when automobile was invented and people were buying them. Mr Clinton still managed to acquire more debt, can you imagine that. He accomplished nothing major really policy wise. When he left the stock market was a huge bubble and people lost retirements, and in order to contain the blow the housing bubble had to be inflated, and Bush got all the blame for that. They are all the same, you see, all the same, that is why I am independent and I am staying home this November.
