Editor’s note: Michael O'Hanlon, senior fellow at Brookings (where he was a colleague of Rice’s for several years), teaches at Princeton and Columbia and Johns Hopkins and is a member of the CIA External Advisory Board. The views expressed are his own.
Beyond the issue of Benghazi, where as I wrote earlier this week I hope that tempers begin to cool and the September 11 tragedy begins to be placed in more reasonable perspective, I have two major concerns that can be posed in the form of a probing question to each candidate before Monday’s final presidential debate.
Time for Afghanistan clarity
For President Obama, having heard the vice presidential debate and Mr. Biden’s repeated statements that U.S. forces will be out of Afghanistan by 2014, is it not true that this is in fact contrary to administration policy?
You traveled to Kabul on May 1 and signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with President Hamid Karzai that envisions – crucially and correctly – a U.S. commitment to Afghanistan beyond 2014. Although we do not yet have a status of forces agreement that would facilitate an American troop presence beyond that date, the clear hope and expectation is that we will negotiate one in time to make possible a follow-on force. To be sure, the current NATO mission as presently construed will end in 2014, but isn’t it true that you are expecting American forces in more modest numbers will still be needed after that date? And isn’t it important that Afghans hear this message from us loud and clear, to reduce their phobias and paranoia that they will soon be left entirely to their own devices (as happened after the Soviets withdrew in 1989)? After all, in the minds of many Afghanistan watchers, such fears tend to heighten the risk of state collapse and civil warfare along ethnic lines, because Afghans tend to revert to ethnic and militia loyalties when they are unsure of the future of the national government.
Defense – how will you pay for it?
For Governor Romney, your defense spending plan is confusing. On the one hand, you promise to reverse President Obama’s planned cuts of some $487 billion over 10 years, relative to earlier plans, as codified in the 2011 Budget Control Act. (You and the president both oppose possible sequestration cuts that could kick in starting January 1, so that is not really the issue here.) There were also cuts of some $100 billion (over five years) announced earlier by then Secretary of Defense Gates that you would presumably overturn as well, for a total difference with the president of some $600 billion over a decade. But your website also talks about the goal of keeping defense spending at least at 4 percent of GDP apparently indefinitely into the future. This would make your plan somewhere between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion greater over that period than President Obama’s.
Is this latter target for defense spending an aspirational goal or a serious plan? If the latter, how can you possibly pay for it while also reducing tax rates, protecting most entitlement spending, and constraining the deficit?

MItt doesn't have time to talk important issues. He will be more concerned to stress about Libya attack so that people could think Obama is bad. But I bet he will not achieve anything."This is the only weapon Rep have"
do not underestimate romney, my friend - his people read the CNN website and CNN knows it (wink)
True, REDFIRLESTORM, one should never underestimate anybody at all. What strikes me is that Romney, like a chameleon which is able to change its colour, changes his stance on some issues on several occasions.
Michael O'Hanlon, Biden meant the US – combat – troops will be out of Afghanistan by 2014. What comes afterwards is at the discretion of – unfortunately – Karzai's government. He steps down in 2014, but he wants to have himself replaced by one of his stooges, who would secure his political comeback in a few years.
As long as Karzai and his cronies still have a grip on Afghanistan, there's no way to combat rampant graft. Of course he and his successor welcome the US and others to stay on after 2014. They could then lay their hands on the billions pouring in, which are for maintaining the Afghan forces.
Jvonhettling....You mean like Obama did on gay marraige?
The topic of the last debate is foreign policy, so why wouldn't he talk about Libya?
R&R are trying to reflect reality. Bin Laden is dead-so let's talk about Libya and something the President had nothing to do with, but Obama won't blame Congressional GOPs for cutting the budget because he takes responsibility. PERIOD. Even though the GOPs pledged allegiance to Norquist instead of our flag. Look what happened. Who should really take some responsiblity here?
I feel you on that subject cause if u really pay attention you are actually right your two comments made my whole day and if people actually think about that it's very tru
Good Reply
Mr.Kennedy2016
I have to laugh at all you liberals. Wow, so the President makes one excuse after another about Libya and you give him the nod. Sure not a problem. The economy is in the toilet. Do you even have a clue as to how many of our men and women have died in Afghanistan? Thousands under Obama and you hear nothing from CNN or the other liberal networks. Not surprised considering he's their manchurian candidate. Keep giving our money to all the other countries (that hate us) and let this country fall apart.
Military deaths in Afghanistan hit 2,000 in August - 2,000 FOR THE WHOLE WAR. Less than half the total in Iraq. You want to pin that on President Obama? After Bush sent our military to Iraq on a lie?
You do know that the GAO would not certify the U.S. government's audit for FY 2007, 2008 and 2009 (all Bush budgets) because the DoD could not account for its spending. We have four times the military of any other country on Earth, yet Rmoney wants to give them more. President Obama took out Bin Laden with a dozen guys, Ghadafi with air strikes AND NOT A SINGLE CASUALTY. Face FACTS. The GOP increases deficits and starts war. The Democrats end up cleaning up the mess.
Facts don't lie. Obama, our non-leader shows again, that he is not on top of things. Why no military strength at this embassy? Why lies have been told to all for days and weeks about what really happened!! Why he can't own up to errors in judgement. Why Obama doesn't meet with the press so the press can fire questions at him like other Presidents?
The non-leader has no answers!! He talks a good game but comes in second. Not only is Iran laughing at him, now the whole middle east laughs when they see his name or hears his "and . . . . and . . . . and . . . .and . . . "
It's not the only weapon he has because Obama has a horrible track record to use against him. However, Romney should use Libya because it shows the liar and coniver Obama is. Obama also made a deal with Putin that tha cameras caught also.
I would think a good question for OBAMA is how could you go to sleep after the US Embassy in Cairo was breached. How could you remain asleep during the FIVE HOUR attack on the US Consulate in Libya.
For FIVE HOURS brave men fought and brave men died.
For FIVE HOURS they hoped without hope that their President would send Marines off shore to their aid.
For FIVE HOURS they fought the fight as a President Slept
and one by one
they did fall
and one by one
they did die
as President OBAMA slept.
Please spare us your faux indignation. It's nauseating. You weren't there and you think that miraculously any president can just conjure Marines and get them anywhere in the world at any time! Even when we ASKED for additional Marines for the embassy in Libya AFTER the attacks, the Libyan government said NO! You people are complete fidiots... you have no clue how diplomatic missions (embassies, consulates, etc) work!
Oh by the way, where was your indignation over the 33 lives lost in embassy attacks during the last administration, eh? Nothing but crickets chirping back then... sickening.
romney knows people like him nore now - he will be cool and presidential –obama is nervous as hell right now - axelrod is spinning his butt off - "and here's to you, mrs. robinson - jesus loves you more than you will know -woah woah woah..." heaven holds a place for those who pray - hey hey hey...
You are silly to think the President is not to blame for thi killings in Lybia. With the anniversary of 9/11 approaching and the Ambasaador asking for more security in advance – and was refused – then Obama said the happening in Lybia and the deaths of those 4 was "optimal" (look up that word) – then he went to Vegas instead pf gomg bacl to Washington to stay close to that area. He should have brought those people home months ago or at least beef up security there.. His business was to the families of the victims and NOT campaigning, gaming, and going on TV shows that week. Shame on you B. Obama for 'acting' like a President of this great country!
If we do not have the capability to send or get help to one of our embassies under siege before 5 hours, then we have a problem. When a country such as Libya refused to allow the FBI on "our" property to investigate the murders of fellow Americans for over2 weeks, we have a problem.
Actually Victoria, he said the incident was NOT optimal after Jon Stewart asked him a question about how it was handled. Funny how you can leave out such an important word.
So Victoria – you must also think George Bush was responsible for 9/11
The Libya thing is simple distraction by Liberals they know that when the call came in at 3am Obama was hot and heavy on what matters to him the most...his campaign. How dare Stevens being sodomized and murdered interfere with that! This President has continuously funded terrorist regimes with our tax dollars. Now we have the eleventh hour "I have entered into negotiations with Iran! Am I not the best?!?!" Irans President has endorsed Obama for President gee what could be the motivation here Hmmmmm. Ten out of ten terrorists agree Barack Obama is the best President the United States has ever had, President Bush the worst. When I vote on November 6th it will be on the side of America for Mitt Romney and not for who terrorist puppet regimes endorse.
How do you know that this person did not show indignation over the 33 lives lost in embassy attacks during the last administration? OMG, libs are now mind readers and psychics!!!
you're dismissing the reports because "you weren't there"? ridiculous.
you're such a blind liberal. lmao@ you
None of you know how embassy security works so please go on and lecture us about your experience in intelligence and national security.
@Kay, @ Victoria.
I just wanted to correct a little misinformation for both of you. First off the attack did not happen at a full U.S. embassy, it occured at a consulate which is much smaller location with significantly less staffing and protection. Any requests for additional protection would have mostly focused on the main Embassy in Tripoli... not the consulate in Benghazi. Additionally, as evidinced by the fall back of the reinforcements at the location, a "normal" amount of added security would not have been enough to totally ward off the attacks by terrorists at the site. 66 additional troops (libyan and US response team) were unable to hold the site and had to fall back. There could have been less deaths with added personnel, or less because the frank reality is that mortars and explosives were used and would be dangerous for anybody on site, including those inside buildings if the explosives strike the wrong place.
Secondly, requests for additional security are pretty common even in areas far less war torn than Libya. My Father works for USAID in Liberia, and the state department in this area has had multiple requests for additional security in the time he has been there. From his explanations it is my understanding that these types of requests typically make it to a regional director level... quite a few steps down from the President of the United States. Prior to an investigation there is no way of really knowing if the White House had any prior knowledge of a security request, although it is possible. Just not very responsible of anyone to jump the gun and automatically assume that the President has direct knowledge of the whereabouts and security details of every single US government employee overseas at any one time.
Ten Libyans were killed while trying to defend the embassy as well.
Here's my foreign policy question for the POTUS, Monseiur Darque..."When in Russia, you were caught on a 'hot mic' stating to the russians that you'd be more 'flexible' after your re-election. Please be specific with us about those areas of flexibility: if you are willing to tell the russians surely you are willing to tell the american people."
Cue rioting in Darque's neighborhood.....
Wake up fool!! You sound just like Axelrod!! BS artist, clammering to change the subject and talk about a different topic.
Truth is my friend, your Pied Piper doesn't have a clue how to address issues around the globe, nor issues at home.
He's one term. So all your crying isn't going to make any difference!
Better go back to school and earn that degree!!!
Uh, couldn't that be said for any President that presided over any conflict throughout our history? Unfortunately, these things happen, and are part of the job. While their handling of clarifying the end result leaves much to be desired, I would not see this as a major hit on any sitting President as long as they are taking the necessary steps to ensure this does not happen again. Republicans are blowing the administration's handling of this situation way out of proportion, which is the same thing Democrats would be doing if the tables were turned. As a voter, and an American, you should be more disgusted with how these types of situations get politicized for the benefit of a political party. Could you imagine being a family member of one of the fallen, not being able to turn on the television because this charade is playing out and making headlines? I know that we need to get to the bottom of this, but let the investigations take place and figure it out from there. The administration's handling of this is not something that would, or at least should, make the difference in the election. There are plenty of policy differences that will make the choice clear without playing the blame game over something that added security would not have been able to handle anyways.
HOW DO YOU KNOW PRESIDENT OBAMA SLEPT? I PERSONALLY HAVE STAYED AWAKE UP TO 48 HOURS WORRYING ABOUT WHETHER MY CHILD WOULD LIVE THROUGH SURGERY AND CHEMO. BECAUSE A PERSON GOES TO BED DOES NOT MEAN HE OR SHE SLEEPS – OUR BRAIN IS STILL FUNCTIONING OVER OUR WORRIES.
well granny,...i believe obama or michelle would have told us about their terrible plight if that had been the case...
I surprise that everyone is blaming Obama about Libya that where were he when the embassy was attacked?
But nobody was asking Bush where were he when New York was attacked ? Its a stupid question, Bush a Republican was here , the attack was inside USA's soil, nobody is questioning that attack .
Check your calendar. This is 2012. Bush has been gone for almost 4 years. Maybe if we elect a President that wants to move us forward instead of living in the past it will also encourage our citizens to do the same.
Every time I hear the word "Bush" I think the person on the other side is trying to say that it's only because Obama is black that people are up set. So I see a black person saying it.
The truth is this 1/2 Black presididnt, that just so happens to be 1/2 white has been handled with kid gloves long enough. Time for a little responsibility and accountability. Tommorow night....may the best man win.
Personally I have my money on Mitt Romney since he seems to be winning and also seems to want it more. Have a good night America!
you are wrong – the dems bashed bush because he was reading a book to a bunch of children and he didn't respond quickly enough for them – so they did bash him. He, however, didn't order a reduction in security 2 weeks earlier and then try to cover it up as a retaliation to some stupid movie the way our white house just did. Obama isn't a bad man, just a bad leader. Too weak.
History gives the present context. One should not deny history or change history, why do republicans try so hard to forget Bush? It is important to understand what Bush did as president and disingenuous to try and keep people from comparing the current president to the one that proceeded him.
I agree...and he went to campaign in Vegas next day...it is all a lie.
I slept too and read about it in the morning. People sleep when it gets dark.
Don't give up your day job.
3000 died while George Bush stood by. And he knew it was coming. His response was to start two wars that have killed as many as died on 9/11.
The death of these folks is tragic although we have no indication Mr. Stevens "stood and fought". I suspect he smartly ran like hell to the safe house. Whether this was a failure of the administration, a consequence of Republicans reducing the funds allocated for security, or just a bad incident – it doesn't compare to the harm that Romney has in store for this country.
But he was wide awake while directing the special forces that took out Osama Bin Laden (while you and most of our country slept). I didn't see the Bush administration achieve that in seven years of trying; they only bogged us down in an unnecessary war in Iraq that has actually reduced national security and further destabilized an already volatile region. And now Mitt Romney, whose only overseas mission experience so far has been to bring his religion to the people of France, wants to saber rattle and repeat the mistakes of the Bush neocons in Syria and Iran. Personally, I prefer a president who thinks and asks questions first before he shoots, rather jumping the gun.
Obama and Minions–"it's the video, it's the video, please terrorists it's the video". I'd say Obama JUMPED THE GUN, Romney was right on this one.
You're kind of an uninformed, self-righteous turd, aren't you?
I agree. As an independent voter who tends to lean democrat, romney has sealed my vote this time. Obama is complacent to the point of almost appearing uninterested.
If you're writing a country western song, you lose. Country folks pledge alligence to our country, not to some guy name Norquist and make it our number one job to make sure the President doesn't get a second term–at any and all costs. We love this country and respect our men & women who serve on our behalf, including our Commander in Chief.
I'm honestly fed up with this nonsense.
Congress, led by the Republicans cut funding to embassy security, explicitly to this embassy. The attack was done with rocket launchers by a militia, something that couldn't have been protected against in the first place.
But of course, it must be Obama's fault. There's some conspiracy to hide that it's Obama's fault, but it clearly is because it happened on his watch.
When you say the same thing about Bush and the original 9/11 attack, then your point will be valid. But you won't because we both know that that attack wasn't Bush's fault even if it was on Bush's watch.
OK, so you hate liberals. You hate Obama. Maybe you hate that the President is black; I don't know. But until you stop being a lying hypocrite, no one cares but people who are lying hypocrites of the same denomination.
I do no hate him because he is black. I'm sure some do but I'm sure many more voted for him because he was. That is why I wish we had a strong black republican running against Obama. Then people would vote the issues! And yes I am so mad that Powell changed sides. He would've mad a great candidate.
Obama and his minions blew this one. Have you heard the interview with the general on the ground? I guess Obama can't move a few dollars around? Maybe cut back On Tokyo security and comgress did NOT specifically target Libya for security cutbacks that is a boldfaced lie.
agreed.
I doubt after the attack began anything could really have been done – the question for Obama is why were the security teams pulled out about 2 weaks earlier against the request of the embassador? That question was asked of Obama in teh second debate – he didn't answer it. I also have to laugh at all the liberal posts complaining that the repubs only bash Obama – not very objective – the only strategy dems have had is to pain Mitt as a bad guy – I think they are both bad b/c they are both want this job. However, Obama has no record to run on – I'd like to hear one democrat defend their guy rather than bash the other guy – then you'll hear cickets.
The question isn't what he was doing during the attack. The question is why didn't he send security when requested, by Ambassador Stevens months before the attack when terrorists were gaining strength around him. If Obama would have listened then, he might have avoided all of these deaths.
If presidents were not allowed to sleep because of a crisis they would eventually become fatigued and unable to make clear decisions.
If presidents were not allowed to sleep because of a crisis they would eventually become fatigued and unable to make clear decisions
The events in Libya pale in comparison to the events of 9-11-01 and yet I do not remember Bush having any answers or accountability. He did manage to attack the wrong country.
Worst could be said about George W. Bush's response to 9/11 and Katrina. I don't think Romney would be any different either. The only reason why I will vote Obama, is because he is not an ultra conservative and I believe his policies will benefit all Americans. We've had conservative rule too long and it is what caused us to go into this recession.
Just to play Devils Advocate with your comment @Independentvoter
Somebody shoulda asked another prez that same topic 11years ago
But instead of sleeping he was reading a book i'm jus sayin not making no excuse
for anybody just saying but the only diffrence between the two is years and knowing in advance time.
My question for Mitt is this: Kofi Annan said today that a military solution will likely make the situation worse in Syria and that a political solution must be found. In light of this statement, how would you handle the Syrian situation?
that's a great question. Hopefully it isn't to back the rise of the muslim brotherhood they way Obama has done in Egypt. Maybe he'll have them over for dinner at the white house again. I hope my tax money goes to buy them a wonderful meal.
Without starting another debate about something we are very likely to never agree upon, can we at least agree that for the time being Kofi Anan and the United Nations do NOT control U.S. foreign policy or the U.S. military? Can we also agree that Kofi Anan is about as far from a military strategist as a bureacrat can get and that the United Nations has no military force of its own? (Just one that gets cobbled together on an ad-hoc basis by very fickle member states that are all too pleased to let the U.S. handle the lion's share of virtually every conflict.)
I cannot recall either candidate in any way suggest that putting U.S. troops on the ground is Syria is the solution to that nation's problems. I do, however, recall Romney repeatedly point out that sitting around waiting for U.N. resolution after resolution has proven ineffective in stopping Syrian violence. Resolutions do not protect everyday Syrians and do not prevent Assad from murdering his own citizens. I don't care what party you're from, don't claim victory in Syria or even attempt to hold it up as an example of United Nations cooperation until the bloodshed stops and the guilty are held accountable. Otherwise, what is there to celebrate? Obama refers to Syria as a victory of diplomacy. Try selling that to the parents whose kids are killed by the Syrian government.
I would ask Romney, Would you support the Syrian people struggle for freedom from the criminal dictatorship of Assad and his gangs and send the weapons they need to defend themselves from the daily genocide of the brave people of Syrian knowing that the weapons will be completely paid off by the Arab league and specially the Gulf states
How about Obama's drone war ? 1000's killed hostile or innocent. Citizen or foreign national.
One citizen who joined Al Qaeda – boo hoo. As to the civilians over there, are these the same people clowns like you want to nuke all the time?
What about Mexico's growing influence over America's internal affairs? Will that be an issue?
Obama's immigration stance is to give Mexico a large permanent voting block in the U.S. by giving "amnesty" to millions of illegal invaders from that country. Just in case there weren't enough people voting in America who's primary loyalty is to another country, there will instantly be millions more who will vote for Mexico’s interests over America’s. Americans aren’t allowed to influence Mexican elections but Mexico will gladly take advantage of a Mexican voting block inside the U.S. to press for the policies it wants. You can be sure that this will mean even more immigration from Mexico and even more benefits for Mexicans at U.S. taxpayer expense. The Mexican consulates (spy nests) across America will be mobilizing to get their people to the polls to vote for Obama. Let’s hope that enough Americans mobilize to vote Obama out while there still is an America to protect as opposed to just another Latin hell-hole.
Immigration isn't foreign policy numnuts. And the President has deported more illegals than previous administrations.
CNN, does that sound familiar to you? While campaigning in 2007, obama promised to pull out troops from Irag the first thing while in office - during 2009. what happened? he made a promise he knew he could not keep. just ask henry kissinger and bob woodward. america believed him - should america believe obama about 2014 now also? NO!
can we "take that to the bank'?
Have you seen the list of things Romney said he would do on "day one"? Of course after he finds out where the bath room is, gets the ICBM codes, choses a cabinet etc etc a week will have gone by. Then, of course he has to become apprised of the real foreign policy positions, not the headlines. And meet the CIA, NSA, and all the other three letter directors as well as Defence. Then he has to deal with press releases, planning in many areas, doing all the mundane things a President must do. That should take him to a month or so. And then, maybe, he can sit down and figure out how he will pass a bunch of legislation that has not even been outlined, never mind drafted, with a senate and/or house that will not follow his every command because this is not Bain. Good luck with day one Mr. President.
The Libyan debacle has to be addressed and the President has to answer questions about this tragedy. It is not something that can be set aside.
President Obama will simply say he wants to wait until the investigation is over. (or until the election is over)
I think it'll be the election – nobody will care about the investigation until after that – it's been 6 weeks – they know what happened – it probalby wasn't Obama himself who did it, but somebody under him – and he won't want that out before the election – that's why he dodged the question in the second debate – the liberal media won't ask him again either.
How many questions about 9/11 did Bush refuse to answer? And do we know even today what happened? Yet that was OK by you I am sure. Of course Obama cleaned up the mess and killed the ring leader.
If this is the only serious foreign policy failure in 3 1/ years then the Repubs have a problem. And yes, Obama will clean up this mess too.
The terrorists in Libya probably thought that they could again dupe us into over reacting and getting into yet another war we don't want and cant afford. After 911, the Republicans over reacted and attacked two countries – one simply where Osama chose to set up set up his desert training camp, and the other country was totally not involved ! This time Obama kept a cool head and didn't run in with guns blazing. In time he will get the bad guys without starting another Mideast war.
rb- I agree – We are strong enough and if we use patience we can settle our differences without war. Obama is trying to do this without sending more troops to war. He has been trying to finish the ones started by GW Bush, which were already in place when he went into office and has been trying not to start anymore unnecessary ones – just trying to put a lid on the ones that keep cropping up.
The withdrawl from Iraq was already agreed upon with the Iragi Government before Obama became President. Obama simply honored the agreement. He ind of forgets to mention that, being the modest man he is.
Oh yes. The President really had to honor some agreement with Iraq. Or what??
Is there any way to keep Romney from lying??
romney people read CNN website - does obama? LMFAO
Pat in IL – Nope it's Romney's second nature – in fact the second nature of all republicans!
All politicians lie, go to any fact check website and you will see mostly "half true" on both candidates answers. Its the congress that has the power to change things, and they twiddle their thumbs.....
I take exception to your remark madam...
and Obama doesn't – you people have 0 credibility – it's funny.
foreign policy debate.. as simon and garfunkle sing "sound of silence"
kudos to CNN for leveling the foreign policy playing field
Ask Obama to name one country in which relations have improved under Obama (and Venezuela doesn't count).
Libya for starters. Most people there are grateful for U.S. assistance in removing Qaddafi. The attack was by a few extremists, not the people.
Spain, Malaysia, Singapore... foreigners HATED Bush. My international friends were so happy to have Obama represent the US (and me). Me too, Obama has done much to help our image in the world. You have NO idea!
all the muslim brotherhood controlled middle east countries now – and they love us and don't want to kill us.
a growing number of people like romney as simon and garfunkle sing "mrs. robinson" to michelle and "sound of silence" to the blinded obama believers
I prefer Myth's theme song:
"Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused"
– "An American Tune" Paul Simon.
Hope Romney can present his hindsight suggestion as to what we should do when a mob attacks a foreign embassy. Maybe we should station a couple of dozen Marines at each of the nearly 300 embassy or conciliate offices. Do we shoot over the fence into and kill foreign people on their land. Bet that would really calm any situation down.
These clowns don't want a few marines they want a battalion. Say 300 men to each of the 300 embassies and consulates. About 90,000 men. I am sure the marines have nothing better to do.
I say its time he go back to teaching in college. He can even take his teleprompter!
Who is angry?
Angry? He is one of the best composed, quick-witted representatives the USA has ever had. I'm proud he is our CEO and Commander in Chief. I don't want my country run like a corporate out-sourcing organization that created arrogant billionnaires like Bain Capital did.
And, btw, are there teleprompters on the View of David Letterman? He's very quick and intelligent, something white-male GOP'rs refuse to recognize. you'll never hear "binder full of women" out of his mouth. lol.
I am getting surprised that everyone is blaming Obama about Libya that where was he when the embassy was attacked?
But nobody was asking Bush where was he when New York was attacked on Set 11, 2001? Its a stupid question, Bush a Republican was here , the attack was inside USA's soil, nobody is questioning that attack .Can someone answer that question in relation to Libya? Open your eyes Americans!
Joel – lots of us believe GW Bush and his gang of warmongering cronies were involved in 9/11 – he needed that excuse to go after Saddam even though he didn't have any marbles in that game. Osama bin Laden was from Saudi Arabia the Bushes buddies. One does remember that we had members of the bin Laden family living in Texas when 9/11 happened and they were flown out of the US in nothing flat – when the rest of us were told not to fly anyplace – I often wonder if our then president Bush sent them out of the US on military planes! I have a very insatiable curiosity about things.
I do remember that, AND that they flew IN TO THE USE a bunch of Saudi's. No one questioned Bush about that either.
people did talk about it for a long time. the 9/11 commission had all sorts of testimonies and evidence hearings that went on for years after the event. the difference in the immediate reactions is really based on timing and location. the 9/11 attacks happened here and were therefore MUCH more noticeable to the people here, it wasn't during an election year so no one had any reason to use it against bush, and agree or disagree with his response, but he made a decision and acted on it quickly to shift the conversation instead of making up something to blame then sit around as his story falls to bits
how 'bout asking some questions about the big white elephant? it is called hydraulic fracturing (fracking). i would like to ask mr. romney how he plans to protect and compensate the innocent citizens from the onslaught of quakes that are presently and will continue to exponentially occur once he unleashes, without restraint, the natural gas fracking monster. i would like to ask him how it makes any sense, while glaciers are melting (our fresh water resources) at a pace even surprising to scientists, to permanently render millions and millions, perhaps billions of gallons of water unusable for public human and wildlife consumption for thousands of years. i would like to ask mr. r. if he would, at least make public, after he is elected, all the fracking waste water injection site LOCATIONS (perhaps poison waste water is trucked to distant states that don't even frack), so that we may be better prepared with earthquake insurance and survivor essentials. will we be compensated if our house spontaneously explodes because of a gas line break due to injection well generated earth tremors? in general, i would like to know what safeguards will be put in place before utter irreversible havoc is uleashed upon our wildlife and urban environments. i would like to ask what federal emergency agency will be created to address possible catastrophic consequences of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and will those numerous newly hired natural gas and keystone pipeline project employees have to go through the same rigamarole that those vets suffering from agent orange exposure had to go through. that's it. just a few minor concerns about the earth's future ability to support the biodiversity of life, ie therefore, human life.
This election will be "fixed" by the electorial college system like the Bush II and Al Gore election.
Greetings from Canada. I think there is only on e question that needs to be asked to President obama: "Why is it that you have felt your top priorities have been acting like a Hollywood personality and fundraising"? But if that isn't enough, how about asking Obama if the Democratic Party is bothered to have the media showing so much bias in their favor that many independents have chosen to vote Republican because they're turned off by the behavior?
I would rather have Hollywood backing me than the Saudis. Apparently Bush's best friends are also paying ads for Rommy. Case you forgot almost all of the 9-11 attackers were either Saudis or were based there.
Go home Canada and take care of your own problems. Obama has to raise money where he can because he is fighting a very rich and powerful enemy and I don't mean China or Russia. And the Canadian press is one of the most biased media in the world. The Thompsons, the Irvings, the Rogers – not exactly small town news outlets. Good luck on giving America advise.
"advice"
Hello Canada–How's fracking coming along? Last I heard, it was halted due to polluting the water supplies and lawsuits against Shell were abundant. Take Romney will ya. He and his fracking policy will be good for you apparently.
Tell the truth...or tell nothing...but don't tell us it was a movie!
Question for Obama. When talking about programs you want, you keep saying that you can pay for these programs from the money saved from the two wars ending The money for the wars was borrowed. How can you spend money that really isn't there?
By stopping the bleeding. The net effect is a positive one. How is Romney going to give the military $2.3 trillion (While M1A tanks sit unused in huge numbers) and still reduce the deficit/debt?
Romney and Ryan are just another Bush and Cheney. They will "pay" for the wars they want and the tax cuts they want and the grand army they want the same way as their Republican precessors: by destroying the American economy, making the USA a third world country, and literally enslaving the citizens they are knowingly selling out.
i would never claim that President Obama is without shortcoming but at least i have not seen him washing already clean pots and pans to proclaim his concern for citizens or swear alleigance to only the rich behind closed doors and then claim to be for everyman at the public podium. Governor Romney is nothing more than a two-faced bussiness man ready to stab any and all in the back and his running mate consistently proves himself little more than a self-serving liar.
Why hasn't anyone held Romney down to a Yes or No ONLY to both Leadbetter and Planned Parenthood defunding?
etcha-sketch. Yes. No. No. Yes. Yes. No.... he's a master at it. LOL
One more question: will Obama's school records, finally, be unsealed?
LOL. Sure, right after you reveal yours! (And explain the significance of it all....geez.)
Now that is a question of national importance – to trolls maybe.
No one knows who will get elected, and no one knows what he will do once elected. Everybody likes to spout off like they have some kind on inside track, but they just repeating stuff they heard on TV and the internet. I detect no original thought or research in any of these comments. I already voted. Even if my guy is elected, I won't know if I made the right decision for months, possibly years, and neither do any of you.
We do know that Obama will be responsible and care for the people, whether in healthcare, education, reduced military ventures, and a host of other things. We know his wife will not be an embarrassment and will support veterans and education and healthy eating for students and a host of other things. And we know that our country will gain respect in the world by being a citizen instead of a bully. Romney? Not so much.
Sure, Michelle will take care of people by taking her friends and relatives on long vacation trips to foreign countries at taxpayers' expense.
I am not a repuglican, but I agree with them the polls are a sham! I DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! THE MEDIA IS DOING EVERYTHING TO MAKE THIS ELECTION CLOSE OR A TIE, SO THE SUPREME COURT WILL BE THE DECIDER! IT'S AN EXPERIMENT ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THROUGH PRPAGANDA! HOW ELSE WOULD PRETENDERS ROBME AND LYIN RYAN EVEN BE VIABLE! THE TRUTH TOLD BY THEM HAS TO BE WHAT IS TAPED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, THEY SAY ONE THING WHEN CAMPAIGNING AND ANOTHER BEHIND CLOSED DOOR! THAS THE RICH REPUGLICAN WAY OF THE WORLD! I DO NOT TRUST THEM! AMERICA GET READY FORWORLD WAR III, IF YOU THINK THE LAST REPUGLICAN PRESIDENT WAS A WAR MONGER, UOU HAVE NOT SEEN NOTHING YET! THE FACT THE ECONOMY IS GETTING BETTER IS NOT A FACTOR IN THIS ELECTION RACE, ITS MOVING FORWARD FROM A ECONOMIC PIT OF FINANCIAL RUIN IN 2008, BUT WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF INSTANT EVERYTHING! SO, THIS RECOVERY WHERE THE STOCK MARKET HAS BEEN RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD HAS BEEN RELABELED BY REPUGLICANS AS SOMETHING NOT GOOD ENOUGH! AMERICANS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SATISFIED, IF WE WERE STILL LOSING 800,000 JOBS PER MONTH, AD WOULD HAVE BEEN JUSTIFIED IN WANTING A CHANGE. tHE TRUTH IS WE ARE GAINING ALMOST 100, 000 JOBS PER MONTH FOR 33 STRAIGHT MONTHS! NOW, THAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!
Never underestimate the stupidity of the American voters.....or at least the conservative ones.
CAPS are hard to read, btw. Just in case you expect someone to read what you write...
How about one that has bothered me for several years...."WHY IS BUSH AND CHENEY NOT IN PRISON FOR WAR CRIMES, TREASON AND MURDER?"
George W. Bush inherited a strong economy, a budget surplus, and a nation at peace.
Eight years later, he left Obama with a shattered economy, a trillion dollar deficit, and two useless wars.
Obama saved the country from another Great Depression, rebuilt GM, reformed healthcare, reformed Wall Street, doubled the stock market, created 12 straight quarters of GDP growth, created 32 straight months of private sector job growth, got Bin Laden, got Gaddafi, and got us out of Iraq.
And now with the automatic spending cuts and the expiration of the Bush tax cuts in 2012, Obama has solved the deficit problem as well.
Obama has done a very good job.
If you just look at both candidates during the campaign without regards to political affiliation, Obama is the better choice. Romney doesn't just lie about Obama and his record or policies, Romney lies about his own policies and what he plans to do. Romney says he will produce more jobs and crack down on China. My only response for that is Sensata Corporation in Freeport, Illinois. Mitt Romney has an opportunity to save 200 jobs in this town and won't because it will increase the Swiss bank Acct that he tried to hide earlier in the campaign. If you are posting a comment in support of Romney and you dont know about Sensata then I encourage you to look into it before you comment
Uh. In case you did not notice, Romney is the white guy running here. The other dude is, well, black.
Revolting peasant, your ignorance just shows why Obama should be re-elected president. People like you who focus so much on color of an individual can't see how valuable an individual like Barack Obama can be to this nation. If you cut the eye holes in your sheets a lil bigger, you would notice that Obama has made huge strides in bettering this nation over theist 4 years.
The Libya thing scares me. The reason why is that it shows how the political parties (in particular the GOP) is able to manipulate the press into making an issue out of something just because all of the political talkers are reading the daily talking points memo. I believe that the Repubican party puts its message and loyalty to the party ABOVE loylaty to the local consituency. It is for this reason that I'm voting Democrat in November. I feel that someone has to hit the reset button on the GOP in order for politics to get back to a system of give and take.
We need to ask Mitt Romney about his record as Governor of MA and why MA does not support him or his party in this election.
TAKE A LOOK AT MITT ROMNEY'S RECORD AS GOVERNOR OF MA
1. Romney’s initial emergency budget proposal for fiscal year 2003 called for $343 million in immediate funding cuts, necessitating layoffs of state employees and cuts in aid to cities and towns for public safety and education.
2. He proposed cuts in state expenditures for Medicaid, The cuts included caps in payments to medical providers (one example being through limiting payments for hospital stays to 20 days, no matter how sick the patient), increased stringency of the criteria for Medicaid eligibility, and rationing of access to higher-priced medications for Medicaid patients. Some 36,000 Massachusetts residents lost their Medicaid eligibility.
3. The 2003 emergency budget revision proposal also included funding cuts affecting public colleges and universities, treatment for schizophrenic and other mentally ill patients, and various other social services.
4. In 2004 even more substantial cuts in state funding for cities and towns. The final budget passed by the legislature (after overriding Romney’s attempt to make still further cuts), cut funding for local aid to many communities by as much as 20%. Already struggling to absorb funding cuts from the prior year’s budget, communities across the state were forced to cut services and hike fees, while laying off teachers, police officers, and other municipal workers.
5. To compensate for lost revenue from the state government, communities raised local property tax rates, helping drive up the average residential property tax bill by 22 percent over the course of Romney’s tenure.
6. In response to complaints about the high residential property taxes, Romney supported and signed into law legislation that allowed communities to shift some of the burden of rising property taxes from residential property owners onto BUSINESS OWNERS.
7. Medicaid restrictions on patients' access to prescription drugs and eligibility for nursing homes admission, he proposed that the low-income patients be charged monthly fees for participation in the program, along with co-payments for visits to doctors' offices.
8. The 2004 budget also incorporated further cuts in funding for higher education. Public colleges and universities responded to funding cuts during Romney's tenure by raising tuition fees 63%.
9. The state of Massachusetts raised $500 million in new revenue during Romney’s first year in office from fees, more than any other state, with increases in 57 existing fees, resulting in higher costs for birth certificates, new car purchases, driver’s learning permits, firearms permits, professional licenses, and billboards advertising, as well as for many state services. Critics, including some conservatives, complained that Romney was using these fees increases as a tax increase in disguise after having promised he would not raise taxes.
10. He sought additional revenue by pursuing changes in the business tax code. Romney's fee increases generated an estimated $350–375 million per year in additional revenue for the state, and the SMALL BUSINESS TAX "loophole closures" brought in another $350–375 million per year.
11, He also increased a state gasoline fee by an additional 2 cents per gallon.
12. Romney's approval rating stood at 34 percent in November 2006, ranking 48th of the 50 U.S. governors.
After learning about Mitt's record it became very clear that Mitt will say whatever it takes to win, even lie to 100% of us, not just the 47% he doesn't care less about.
Do we want this kind of leadership to become part of the fabric of our society? Do we want our ELECTED leader to act as if he is on a reality show and he is simply trying to entertain us with #$%$? That shouldn't be the America we want for our children or for WE THE PEOPLE.
Ask yourself honestly do you believe Mitt Romney and his new found liberal ideals?
The next question I would like to ask Mitt Romney about is about the many terrorist attacks that were launched against many American embassies and other American targets abroad. Here are the verifiable facts.

I think the question about how Mitt Romney would pay for defense spending is spot on. And be sure to follow up by asking if he thinks that spending on the military pays for itself like tax cuts for the wealthy.
A related and important question is if Mitt would raise taxes to pay for a war. George Bush didn't raise taxes for the Iraq war (or the the prescription drug benefit). Most economists believe those two items added to the debt. Let's just imagine that the US and Israel lauch a preemptive attack and begin a war with Iran (similar to Iraq). Would either Romney or Obama ask for congress to raise taxes to pay for the war?
It is Mitt's mission to inform us how Obama has "FAILED", rather than tell us how he would do things differently. If Barack looks bad enough, then Mitt's a shoe-in, right?
Is this the Wizard of Oz where the carpetbagger from Massachusetts flies us home in his WeinerMobile balloon?
Obama supporters need the amBush years to support the poor performance of O. That is why I voted for O.
My vote has been cast this election and O did't get it.
LOL, you guys have got to stop bringing Bush up, it's gotten to the point where it is just background noise.
Fact is Obama has had his 4 years and things have not gone well. Question is do we give him 4 more years or try something different?
IMO Obama has shown himself to be to too young and inexperienced and frankly unable to handle the position. He needs to spend the next 8 years learning how to be a better politician and then come back to the ring. And that is why I will not be voting him back in to office.
I do think it's a bit scary and sad that Obama is spending so much time campaigning when he should be running the country. That said, I think the situation will only get worse and ANY President running for a second term is going to be stuck in perpetual reelection mode. It'll never happen but let's change the job to a single six-year term. Just a thought.
" I hope that tempers begin to cool and the September 11 tragedy begins to be placed in more reasonable perspective"...spoken like a true "progressive reporter"...let's ignore the obvious failings of this administration and the contracdicory messages about how the administration handled recent events in Libya and turn to Democrat talking points...Gee Wiz kids... CNN just wants to insulate O and his regime from any criticism....
This is simply an effort to try to shift the public discourse. We are not done with Libya yet as the issue has not been clearly laidd out before the American people. Candy Crowley was biased as a moderator in her attempt to dismiss the argument that the President was deceiving the American people as to the real state of affirs. The two topics that the writer proposed we focus on are not the two most important. We need to discuss far more about our foreign policy.
I completely agree. Well said
The benghazi attack and the administration's response are significant and should be discussed, but the more important question for a presidential candidate is how they would use military force. Will they use the military for defense or will they use the military to launch pre-emptive or preventive strikes? Will war be the act of last resort, after all diplomatic and economic options have failed? As voters and citizens we have a right to hear how the weapons and soldiers we support will be directed. It is not onlyl our right, it is the responsibility of the the candidates, the press and the voters to have a reasoned discussion about the use of our military.
Its all about the money, unrestricted hidden billions poured into political campaigns, thanks to the Supreme Court Citizens United decision that now allows the rich and powerful to have the best government that thier money can buy via ads of mass distruction twisting the truth and confusing the public. Why are the candidates not talking about that in the debates? Is this what passes for Democracy?
Look at all the illegal foreign money Obama has.
The single most important question is how Mitt plans to pay for his invasion of Syria and Iran. Tax cuts for the wealthy is not an answer America wants to hear.
Same way Obama is going to pay silly.
the familys of the 4 that die in Libya need too know the truth about what heppen in Libya and Obama should have told the news that we will make a tell the people what happen after we check in to it not sand people out saying it was a video what the people was not going to find out month before this happen they ask for help was turn down it was wrong someone should be fired at the 2 debate Obama said we was on the phone that night so what did we real know n when
do not worry kool aid drikers the press has your back the ABC CBS NBC CNN will roast romney even if he wins.
ABC CBS NBC CNN will announce prior to 9PM that Obama has won just like they did in 2000 for Gore and 2004 for Karry.
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.
This Michael O'Hanlon, CNN doesn’t ask a question he writes a book.
MEDIA BIAS AT THJE OPTIMUM:
He wants to ask Romney. Defense – how will you pay for it?
Did he ask Obama how will you pay for it when he spent OVER 6 TRILLION DOLLARS in additional debt over the last FOUR YEARS? Nope. Not a whisper!!!
He wants to ask Obama. Time for Afghanistan clarity? Why not ask why the President after telling the enemy and the world when we will leave Afghanistan he has watched passively as American Troops have been murdered the last couple of years? Obama is the worst “Commander In Chief” we have ever seen. When you announce to the world we’re leaving it is AFTER you have told the Field Commanders to remove the troops from harm’s way. Really dumb Foreign Policy.
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.
Many want to know why Obama has deceived and lied to the world about Libya. Most already know why. (politics) Then he tried to say that future President Romney (has a ring to it) is politicizing it when all Romney wants is what the rest of America wanted – the truth. We are getting the truth about many things. Al-Qaeda is alive and well, the POTUS and his staff haven't a clue but they think the American public is stupid. And just how dumb is that? They ALL need to be fired because every single one is in over their head. Romney/Ryan 2012
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.
Obama and his Administration did more advertising for the “film” than anyone could have supplied. NO one, including the protestors had ever heard of that “film” until the Administration tried to use it to cover up the Libya fiasco. Our Embassies were attacked because of Obama. There were protests but they turned into attacks by advertising a “film” no one had heard of. Our gov’t also spent $70,000 advertising it in Pakistan. Real bright but only if what you are trying to do is format unrest.
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.
This Michael O'Hanlon, CNN says. “issue of Benghazi, where as I wrote earlier this week I hope that tempers begin to cool and the September 11 tragedy begins to be placed in more reasonable perspective.
Dude. 4 Americans including our Ambassador are dead. It was blamed on a “film” that no one ever heard of until advertised by the Obama Administration and the film maker is in an “American jail. The Administration has been circling the wagons to fight the truth and we need a “more reasonable perspective.
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.
Maybe you don't realize Mitt Romney is the other presidential candidate. His campaign is based on a lie.
RIGHT!!!!
Maybe you don't realize Obama is the other presidential candidate. His entire career is based on a lie. There's videos all over You Tube to prove it. Google it. Amazing how stupid Democrats are!!!! Your comment was real deep????? You forget he now has a record.
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.

FILTERED CNN. Isn't it interesting that all stories on CNN about the polls have the comments turned off.
Democrats have to lie. If they tell the truth they can’t get elected.
To by CNN's Dana Davidsen
"Poll: Race for White House all tied up”
Gallop 10/14-10/20 Romney 52, Obama 45, Romney plus 7
And this is with a 6 point pack of additional Democrats to Republicans
Last President to win with a 6 point margin. Obama nope, Bush nope, Clinton nope, Bush the elder nope, Reagan nope the first time maybe the second, Carter nope. Get the point?????
I was watching a program this morning which had the general who was on the ground there and Obama's minions messed up badly. Obama CANNOT be defended on this issue.
CNN sucks
CNN sucks. Wheres my comment to setnommarih
FILTERED CNN.
What is the issue of what Obama was doing durning this attach? Some seem to think that he knew it was going to happen so he went to bed. Are we also in the same time zone ? This is crazy, where do people get their information, you should all work for CNN, you seem to have all the answers.
What is your civil rights platform for 2012-2014?
Will you reform Head Start programs?
Will Iran been another Vietnam in your eyes?
Ana on Cnn please just stop. I gasp each time you open your big mouth.
Explain why US always takes Isreal as the gospel truth on issues in Middle East. So what was Halliburton and contracted security doing in Libya? What is wrong with that picture?
Why does Chaney have so many contracts in the Middle East?
Show us your taxes Willard!!!!!!! You are a criminal for not disclosing income from you off-shore accounts on your taxes.
India has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts.
I just have a few questions for the tea party folks. Did you people blame Reagan in 1982 when 299 people including 240 Marines were killed with the terrorist attack? What about the 1983 Embassy bombing in Beirut, only a year later, resulting in 63 dead? How about the 9/11 attack in spite of all the warnings by CIA and all the ignoring of the Bush administrations which resulted on the biggest terrorist attack on our soil? Did you blame Bush for the incompetency of his administration then?
You people are so much inside your bubble and are so blinded with your convictions and prejudice that have lost all sense of realty and facts and sadly are not willing to educate yourself.
Fareed is so biased! In the USA the president always takes the responsibility for a bad economy. Whether your a republican or a democratic president after four years you can't continue to blame the previous administration. As Jimmy Carter, ask George Herbert Bush and now it's president Obama's turn....Obama said he would be a one term president and he should have put all his strength into fixing economy NOT on healthcare!!! 70 percent didn't want it anyway! Now we must try someone else! Anyone else will do besides Obama! "It's the economy stupid!
naturally like your web-site however you need to check the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling issues and I to find it very troublesome to inform the reality then again I will definitely come again again.
