Pakistan on the cusp of change?

By CNN Global Public Square

For more “What in the World,” watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS" on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET

Earlier this month, the Pakistani Taliban opened fire on a school bus. Two girls were shot. At first, it seemed a familiar story. The Taliban, after all, has bombed hundreds of schools, especially those for girls.

But here's what's new: Mass protests ensued against the Taliban, and in favor of women. That's startling and refreshing in Pakistan.

This past week, thousands of demonstrators thronged to the streets to protest the Taliban's brutality towards women. They're rallying around one person, 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai. Malala was one of the girls who was shot on that school bus. She was not an accidental target. The Taliban directly sought her out and shot her in the head. They wanted to kill not only Malala, but what she stood for. Here's why:

"I will show them the Koran, what Koran says. Koran didn't say that girls are not allowed to go to school"

Malala exposed the lie of Islamic extremists – and they were willing to kill her for it.

But she survived, and so has her argument. Her courage in taking on the Taliban has inspired moderate Pakistanis.

We've been waiting for this kind of moment for a while. What will it take for moderate Pakistanis to unite against extremism? For years now, fundamentalist groups have tried to turn Pakistan into a theocracy. They've scared girls into forgoing school, they've repressed women, they've pushed for draconian interpretations of Pakistan's blasphemy law. But where was the pushback? Just last year, when a state governor, Salman Taseer, spoke out against the misuse of the blasphemy law, he was gunned down. Outside the court, his killer was greeted with rose petals. Where was the public outcry?

Perhaps the last time we saw sustained public anger against the Taliban was three years ago, when a video of a woman being flogged circulated on the internet and on Pakistani TV. That moment led to mass support for military action against the Taliban.

So perhaps the tide is turning once again. Pakistanis often blame the West for their problems, protesting against America, against drone strikes, or even against YouTube. But the real enemy lies within. And it took a 14-year-old girl to bring that to people's attention.

Pakistan's youth literacy rate is only 71 percent; take South Asia as a whole and that number rises to 80 percent; it rises to 90 percent when you take the whole world into account. Girls fare especially badly in Pakistan. There are only 79 Pakistani schoolgirls for every 100 schoolboys. In South Asia that number is 95, and in the whole world it’s 97.

But you don't need a World Bank database to spot these trends. Just ask any schoolgirl in Pakistan.

Women are often seen as the stealth reformers of Islam. As they press for their rights, it will force a more liberal and flexible interpretation of the religion. And while politicians have been cowardly and hesitant, a 14-year-old girl has led the charge. Here's wishing her a complete recovery, so she can get back in the fight for her country and her religion.

You are surely NOT off the mark.

But there are a HANDFUL of Pakistani Muslim gems that I know of....and they say the same thing too!

They are all columnists for Pakistan's #1 newspaper dawn.

They are Irfan Husain, I A Rehman, Nadeem Paracha, Kamran Shafi, Late Murtaza Razvi, Mahir Ali, Pervez Hoodbhoy, Faiza Mirza.

Check out any of their articles on Pakistan, Islam, the west, India. Every word these Muslims say is worth its weight in gold.

Wish our own Indian-American covert radical supporter Fareed Zakaria takes a cue from these Pakistanis!!!!!

I could not disagree with you more. You are looking at India's problems through the wrong prism. That of Indian government which is on life support system blaming Pakistan for all the ills in Indian society. Let's face it, India is a decadent culture and economy on the verge of collapse. India has become a dinosaur. A Smithsonian specimen. Like humpty dumpty even USA, NATO and the entire free world are having a tough time holding it together. Living in the shadows of Pakistan, defined by China, haunted by Kashmir and punctuated by Terror Organizations such as Shiv Sena, India is struggling to find a meaning for its existence (besides a call center) and a place in the new world order. Here is my take on the ongoing civil war in India and its imminent disintegration.

India has everything to do with this article. Here is why......

With such "Dark Age" culture still in existence in India how can the world be healthy and the neighbors prosperous. India poses a grave danger to the world and its deities and leaders set a bad example. Mahatma Gandhi, a pedophile, needs to be exposed and tried posthumously for his child molestation crimes just like the Penn State crowd Sandusky et al. Gandhi's statutes need to be knocked down everywhere they have been put in USA. The hindu deities need to be shattered and trashed. Disgusting figurines of ugly and scary looking characters with demonic personalities. How can hindu children grow up mentally stable looking at such atrocious representations of evil in its most heinous form.

In any religion, culture, or society women play an invaluable and integral role. Mr. Zakaria, I take offense to your statement, " women are often seen as stealth reformers of Islam." First of all, Islam does NOT need any reforming. When Islam is practiced correctly, women have been given many, many rights, such a right to be educated, work, establish businesses, participate in government. What needs reforming are these extremists that persecuting women in the name of religion. What needs reforming are the media establishments that should also report on the positive actions toward Muslim women. I salute Malala and her family for standing up for her right to an education. There are many Malala's in Pakistan and elsewhere. It is the ignorant men that need serious reforming, no matter their religion or culture. And they exist in every religion and culture!!! I am a proud Muslim-Pakistani-American. I know of and have seen and heard of many Pakistani women and men that are trying to reform the ignorant mindset towards women's rights to obtain an education and work. May I remind you, that is was not too long ago that some western societies denied women the right to vote, join the military, etc. I do not recall the history books referring to these restrictions as Christian based. These are the winds of change. Please be a positive force of change, by stating the facts and not perpetuating the same mindset that Islam discriminates towards women. IT DOES NOT. I am a living example.

I am getting bad vibes reading about Hindus and Indians and their culture. I have read up on them as well and don't like what I see. How can our government be supporting India, a culture so brutal and anti women, children and minorities. I have put in a call to our congressional delegation and emailed them as well opposing any further financial aid/support of any kind to India. We Americans cannot condone such archaic cultures. I urge all Americans to contact their congress people and voice their concerns regarding India.

Pakistan may not be a perfect country but against all odds it is striving to improve. What also needs reformation are the neighbors around it with barbaric cultures and value systems that continue to partake in financing of terror in the region, western countries that have created problems that continue to linger on like Kashmir/Palestine, an antiquated UN system that should be dismantled and replaced with a more democratic setupy, trigger happy world leaders that keep on invading countries and massacring millions of people and on and on. Pakistan is just a microcosm of what is happening in the world around it and the inability of its leaders and people who can't cope and manage these phenomenon. But as someone commented on this forum and I quote.....

"PAKISTAN.....The New Gateway to Central Asia and Europe.
With a population of over 180 million most of whom are well educated, English speaking, entrepreneurial and a cultural and social fit with Central Asians...Pakistan has now become the new face and gateway to Central Asia and Europe. Pakistan will thus span this region and provide the impetus for growth, prosperity and unity among these countries. These are new and exciting times for Pakistanis who should now look forward to their new leadership role aligned with Central Asia and Europe rather than the Subcontinent. We wish them much success as they have sacrificed the most during the past 30 + years creating a new world order."

We wish Pakistan and Pakistanis God Speed.
Let us not pull the rug from under them.

Why hasn't Obama done anything to support Islamic girls? The same reason he hasn't done anything to support Black kids in Chicago. He doesn't care and the media won't tell on him because they are as bad as he is. The US news media is worse than China's. The truth is always covered up to protect the corrupt politicians.

We continue to be of the opinion that India is a zero sum event in history and that a break up of sorts is the optimum way to maximize its potential for the people. The current events in India reinforce our belief that the inevitable implosion of India has begun and the beginning of the end state is upon us. Whether that will be nirvana that most of us believe it will, is yet to be seen. But this we will say. This defragmentation of India will unleash boundless opportunities and uber economic demand that will be beneficial to US and Europe and help pull them out of current recessionary malaise. We pray for the events to unfold peacefully and in a harmonious manner for the people of India and its neighbors.

INDIA: Between two Deities: KALI & PANCHALI

The problem with India is that is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. Now just take a look at these two Hindu goddesses and the destruction and lack of morality they represent.

Goddess Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. Disgusting, to say the least. Would you want your kids growing up with such inspiration?

Meanwhile, goddess Panchali was married to five brothers. Which one would become the legitimate father of his child should she have one? Dr Charles (renowned author and an authority on India) says that instances of incest are common in Hindu scriptures. Decadent ! Immoral !

Talk about being between a b!tch and a tramp!!

Now you are writing posing as me. There is always a hope that people change and work for the betterment of the society. But you guys don't seem to learn anything and continue to pour hatred towards other countries and other religions. This is what you call tolerance practiced by your religion. No wonder people like you make you think that your religion is one of the fastest growing religions, but forget the fact that you are also making them the most hated religion. Keep continuing hating every other person who does not belong to your religion and prove it that your religion does not have the tolerance.

The problem with India is that is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. You can only take it so far based on symbolisms of a goat and a stick with a skinny little man aka gandhi banging boys at night and spinning wheels during daytime.

Everything is relative. Here is one reason why. Hope this helps you.

HINDU KALI – GODDESS OF VIOLENCE/TERRORISM

A recent report by United Press trust of India (UPI) stated that during the past three years more than 2,500 young boys and girls were sacrificed to goddess Kali in India. Another of AFP's recent reports say: hundreds of young boys and virgin girls are sacrificed every month for the deity Kali. In one case Rama Sewak hacked his eight year old son to death in broad daylight in Delhi because goddess Kali had told him he would come back to life and bring him good fortune. Bloodthirsty Kali is worshipped openly the length and breadth of India. Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. She is also known as Durga, Devi, Shaktima, Uma and Parvathi in other manifestations. The priest of Delhi, Kali Bari, says that a child sacrificed to Kali ensures a man the birth of a son. Human sacrifices are also made to these gods or goddesses, either to appease them or to ask favours of them.

For the same reason that US armed forces ran away from Afghanistan in the 1980s and let the talibans fight the Soviets and defeat them. For the same reason 1.2 million Indian army is hiding in trenches scared of talibans. Hope that puts in perspective the scenario for you.

If the Hindu man's wife dies, he is free to go and find another woman when he wants. But if the Hindu woman's husband dies, not only is she prohibited to remarry but she should be cremated along with her dead husband ("Sati").
When His "Holiness" Puri Shankaracharya was asked about the fate of the widow's children, he replied – "it is fate! Let the children suffer or die without a mother. But SATI has to be performed according to Hinduism".

THE AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORT ON "MEERUT" MASSACRE OF MUSLIMS IN INDIA
      Reuters:
"Amnesty International has concluded that there is strong evidence that members of India’s Provincial Armed Constabulary were responsible for the Muslim massacre (hundreds of thousands) and the deliberate killing of unarmed civilians during the riots and following days."
The report added that witnesses had charged PAC officers (all Brahmins and High caste Hindus) of herding Muslims into trucks and later shooting them dead (raping the Muslim ladies, in most cases). Their bodies were then tossed into canals and rivers.

Fareed, I watch GPS every Sunday and find the programmes very enlightening. keep up the good work. On Pakistan, I have frequently heard you express hope that sanity will prevail and extremism will be rejected. The problem with this conclusion is that the majority of Pakistanis, who are not extremists, do not have the courage to speak up for Malala. Additionally, the State uses extremism for its own use as an inexpensive way to export terror. Therefore, it is impossible to, on the one hand feeding extremists and at the same time, biting them! The solution is a whole sale transformation of the society by someone like Erdogan!

Sorry....We now need to focus on India. The American invasion of Afghanistan brought to the forefront the irrelevance of India as a nation. With a population of over 1.2 billion people there was no value that this nation could bring to the table. Their soldiers (ragtag) 1.2 million continue hiding in the trenches scared from Talibans. A few teenage Talibans invaded the country and held it hostage for days on end showing how useless India is. It was embarrasing for the world to observe this humiliation of a nation that was being touted as a regional power.

I continue to read with interest the thesis presented on CNN that "less is more" in a political context as applied to India. Although Mies Van Der Rohe adopted this in an architectural context, its economic and political connotations are indeed powerful. Empowering subjugated minorities in India by splitting it into smaller states would trigger uber economic demand for western nations who have given so much financial and technology aid to India with no return to show for the investment. I concur with this approach and find the premise to be on solid footing. Central Asian States (CAS) are a case in point on this successful approach. We need to understand that India has an unmanageable large population mired in poverty and we are spinning our wheels trying to feed it. It is also too big of a geographical unit to govern. Again, we saw how a few teenage talibans were able to invade it with a few BB guns. And that says a lot... in a negative way not only for a large unmanageable country like India but also for USA which is trying to prop it up against China. Besides, Americans cannot afford to look like losers in the midst of a terror war which has lasted for over ten years now.

The Pakistani and American people and congress recognize the symbolism and good will that Malala has created and desire to recognize her with a medal besides all the support they can garner. Malala's legacy has just begun. It is singular people like Malala who stand up to and bring down terrorism, hate and malice and bring changes to the world for the good. To our Indian brethren we say seize the opportunity and learn from it and change for the better. It is never too late. Shed your fabric of hate and negativity and medievalism and inculcate in yourselves the very essence of Islam and other religions of god that Malala stands for. Is it obsession, or is it jealousy or is it pure boredom resulting from economic doom/poverty/bubble burst/joblessness prevalent in India? It probably is a combination of all of above.Needless to say that Indians, among others, should learn from the inspiration that Malala has generated and try to emulate her bravery, intelligence, innocence in standing up to overwhelming odds and speaking her mind up. Fareed Zakaria ""The Danger comes from us (the US) and NOT them (Al-Qaeda & Muslim radicals). Ref: Reflections on 9/11 and its Aftermath” CNN-GPS Sept 9th, 2011

Erdogan "The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers".

On Pakistan's "so-called" moderates here's a quote from a Pakistani radio host Fasi Zaka "The silent majority does not want to take out a gun and shoot anyone, but at the same time they're not appalled by it when somebody else does……..The majority are enablers."!!!

Do a google check on my name "Amit-Atlanta-USA" and I have tons of responses where I have logically stated why I am opposed. In fact I have not been able to get across all my comments due to strict censorship even when there was no foul language of any sort....apart from just being critical and with all the right references on why I feel so.

Check it out when you have some time, and if you feel like.

Also check out my resp. above posted Oct 25th 10:02 pm where I have talked about my huge appreciation for Pakistan's leading Muslim journalists.

Beware of my imposter @krm007 who posts all over pretending to be me (Amit-Atlanta-USA.) note: the period after the USA!!!

Spare us your rubbish. India is a bully and a trouble maker in that region. It has kept the neighbors behind due constant bickerings. India has always lived in the shadow of Pakistan and has been forever defined by Pakistan. Unfortunately, India had a chance at leadership and blew it. Pakistan has now taken over the reins and is running with it. Much to the chagrin of Indians. So be it. Destiny has dealt its hands and India is about to fold

We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts. It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. India needs to be carved up into smaller independent states to be a viable economically and geo politically.

To address India's problems, one has to start with the basic premise that "small is beautiful: and that India has become unmanageable in size. At times, the sum of parts is greater than the whole. And that is precisely where India needs to head. A controlled breakup of sorts.

Living in the shadows of Pakistan, defined by China, haunted by Kashmir and punctuated by Terror Organizations such as Shiv Sena, India is struggling to find a meaning for its existence and a place in the new world order. Here is my take on the ongoing civil war in India and its imminent disintergration.

India GDP is more than 9 times the GDP of Pakistan. India gross income is 7 times of Pakistan. India has 6 Olympic medals 2012 and Pakistan is zero. India has more cricket world cups than Pakistan. India is a democratic country, Pakistan is a failed country (12 th in the rankings). Pakistan is heaven for terrorists. India is a secular country, where as Pakistan is a Islamic republic, which has strong blasphemy laws. Pakistan is more or less a military dictatorship rule all the time, where as a India is the world's largest democracy. Pakistan is dependent on financial aid from USA, Saudi Arabia, China, India donates money to Afghanistan. Indian are always responsible and mix well with wherever you go. The list can go on and on ... India is way ahead of Pakistan and much more prosperous. In a way it is insult for India to be compared to Pakistan

    • NO INDIA HINDUS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD PLEASE

The obsession with Pakistan by Indian hindus is hilarious !!!!On the average an Indian hindu has ONE B@LL !!!! Now let's look at the reality about Indian not cooked up zombie numbers that is nothing but cacophony.

INDIA:::: Some Alarming Statistics: (Source: UNDP)

      • 1/3rd world’s poor is in India. It also has a higher proportion of its population living on less than $ 2 per day than even sub-Saharan Africa.

      • 828 million people or 75.6% of the Indian population is living below $2 a day. 42% of the population is living below the new international poverty line.

      • 33% of the global poor are Indians. Sub-Saharan Africa considered the world’s poorest region is better than India.

      • 41.8% of the rural population survive with monthly per capita consumption expenditure of Rs447 ($7)on essential necessities like food, fuel, light and clothing.

Now, the problem with India is that it is built on a system of cultural and societal values based on Hinduism which is a cult. Nations built on a cult seldom survive in the long run. You can only take it so far based on symbolisms of a goat and a stick with a skinny little man aka gandhi banging boys at night and spinning wheels during daytime.

India has always lived in the shadow of Pakistan and has been forever defined by Pakistan.

India is pretty much done. The bubble has burst. India is sliding downhill at supersonic speed. GDP growth has disappeared...the only growth left is the hair between their legs. Inflation is in the clouds and India has asked Pakistan to help out. Pakistan has opened up Wagah Border to help Indians with food/goods etc. The Indian Rupee has collapsed against US $. US owns India financially now. As of last week the Indian bourse also collapsed.

LIPSTICK ON A PIG: The Story of India
There is only so much one can do to make a pig look pretty
Slapping some lipstick is the epitomy.
India is mired in sewage and poverty.
      GDP growth GDP growth
Has done nothing but made the people loathe.
Lipstick on a Pig is the Indian way
Either nukes will soon blow it away.
Or an implosion can perhaps ease the sway.

Until the new day dawns, the uneducated can learn at home from online courses and TV lectures. First-rate colleges like Drexel and Harvard have online curricula as do many of the state schools like the University of Maryland, which has been operating classes overseas for our military sine 1947.

Perhaps millions of Muslims are sympathizers of Malala but NO ONE tries to change or eliminate Muslim (Sharia) laws in ANY Islamic nation. The root of the problem is the "Satanic Verses"...of the Koran...!

The root of the problem are person's like you who don't understand that sharia laws form the basis of all English Laws and Post American Revolution American laws. It is this inspiration from Islam that formed the basis of the development of western thought and philosophy and system of jurisprudence that is in existent today albeit using different semantics.

I have reached the conclusion that we must apply the “Minimalist Approach” to solve India’s malaise and problems. Essentially that entails imploding India into more economically, politically and socially viable states that are independent. From the ashes shall rise the salvation.
