What the Israel/Gaza violence means

By International Crisis Group

The International Crisis Group’s Robert Blecher, director of ICG’s Israel/Palestine Project, discusses the latest outbreak of violence between Israel and Gaza, and what it means for the region. The views expressed are Blecher’s own, and are based on a video interview conducted today.

Why is the violence we’re seeing today so much worse than in recent years?

The violence today between Israel and Gaza is the worst that there’s been since Operation Cast Lead four years ago. Israel right now is in an election season and the government is running on a platform of security and stability. It makes them look completely impotent if they can’t stop hundreds of rockets from raining down on their citizenry. The citizenry has a real demand for safety and security.

Also, from the perspective of the Israeli government, they want to change the rules of the game. They want to reestablish deterrence with Hamas – the kind of deterrence that has not existed in a number of years now. So they want to force Hamas to do things differently.

And I think on the Palestinian side, it’s the same, it’s the adverse calculation: that Hamas wants to show that despite the fact that it gets hit hard by Israel, it can continue to send rockets and they will not bow to the pressure being exerted on them from the other side.

What are the implications of all of this, both regional and local?

If this goes on and Israel gets pulled into a ground invasion into Gaza, that can really change the political dynamic completely. What will Israel do if it does end up incurring into and potentially re-occupying parts of the strip? That’s a very important question. That’s an especially important question within the changing regional framework. We’re in a new Middle East, with new actors, and we have both Israel and the Palestinians and Hamas trying to calculate what this violence will mean for each of them vis-à-vis their relationship with Egypt. They have to calculate what this might mean in terms of consequences in the West Bank for a weakened Palestinian Authority that now has a people watching Israel repress Palestinians in Gaza – even as the authorities in the West Bank are shutting down demonstrations in solidarity with Gaza.

More from CNN: Rockets rain down on Gaza

You have questions about Jordan. There are protests happening as we speak in Jordan, which mainly are economic so far. But, it looks horribly unseemly for a Jordanian government to be repressing a citizenry of which 50 or more, 60 percent is Palestinian, at the same time as Israel is going after Palestinians in Gaza.

And then you have the question of Hezbollah, with its back up against the wall in Lebanon because of pressures from the Syrian uprising. And what does Hezbollah do? Does Hezbollah get involved? Does it not want to get involved from Lebanon, so it chooses to maybe try to get involved from Sinai? What does that then mean in terms of Israeli action in Sinai? And the potential reaction of Egyptian public opinion to the Israeli involvement on Egyptian soil? These are incredibly complex questions with regional consequences, as a result of the changes within the Middle East region.

How does this current round of violence end?

This ends most sustainably by a regional agreement to respond to the regional challenges that I was just talking about. What we’ve seen over the past couple years is a succession of bilateral agreements, or indirect bilateral agreements, between Israel and Hamas that obviously have not gotten to the root causes.

In order to get to the root causes you’re going to have to normalize life in Gaza, both on the border with Egypt as well as the border with Israel. That should go along with a normalization of Hamas’s political position. It has done so to an extent regionally, but that’s going to have to be broader if we want to sustainably end this violence.

More from CNN: Will Twitter war become the new norm?

There needs to be real cessation of rocket attacks and violence for Israel, because hundreds of rockets landing on Israeli territory and terrorizing Israeli citizens is obviously not acceptable either for the Israeli public or for its government.

Finally, there needs to be a resolution or an agreement for what role the Ramallah-based PA in the West Bank plays in this Gaza equation. If we were to have a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there needs to be a Palestinian entity to implement that agreement. Until all of these pieces are included, the situation is Gaza, the violence for Israel, the West Bank piece, and the regional piece, how these three actors are going to interact with their regional neighbors and partners, you’re not going to have a sustainable resolution. What we’ve learned is that until there is a regional solution, the bilateral violence cannot stop.

right, Jason, it is so simple. KIlling a highly elusive terrorist in your own sweet time for an election is the dumbest idea ever. THey saw the opportunity and they took the chance and got their man. I am sure it has a little bit to do with election but at the same time, you seem to be forgetting 100;s of rockets that have been constantly being fired into Israel that weren't responded to. As soon as Israel responded, then the whole world had an opinion. I guess it is ok to throw rockets into your neighboring countries but not ok to respond in kind.

This problem will not end until Hamas is wiped out. That won't happen until the Gaza Strip is annexed to Israel so they can clean the swamp of the Hamas insects. Harsh but reality.

What makes it even more interesting is the Hamas terror group put those rockets in civilian locations such as schools, housing districts and other civilian location. Then, they blame the jews when return fire comes back at the same location that their rockets were fired from.

HAMAS knows what they are doing, and then will do anything to make the Jews look bad. This is a prime example.

I guess they didn't learn their lesson 4 years ago. DONT POKE THE BEAR!

sending missles on civilians just to kill someone is good?
Israel kills a terrorist and destroy the missles they send to kill civilians. any country would have done it.

Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin, wanted peace and compromise. He championed the Oslo accords recognising the PLO and giving partial control of the Gaza strip to the PNA.For his troubles, in 1995, a right wing Orthodox jew, gunned him down .This is the same right wing of Netanyahu. Enough said.

Jason, Netanyahu was going to be easily re-elected before zapping Hamas this week. Now, if something goes wrong, he could be in trouble. He is taking a risk by retaliating strongly. Try reading and thinking before talking. Usually helps.

It all depends on what you call a terrorist, and who is the terrorist. In my opinion the Palestinian Israeli issue is so simple to understand.

        1. Jews claim that they were there thousands of years ago in that territory and are descendants of David
        2. However during these thousand years Jews gradually lost this territory, right?
        3. Jews can't come back all of the sudden and create their own state under the belief that this territory belonged to them thousands of years ago, if that territory belonged to them then fine come and live there as Jews but you have no right to create a country named Israel there, by killing thousands of innocent people. And you cannot artificially create a country at some other country's expense.
        4. Jews killed and massacred innocent Palestinians and somehow they expect to live in peace, really? how is that possible? this is like someone comes in your home kills 2 or 3 family members and the next morning says good morning and let's go back to peace. Also in this process they occupied your house and they give you a bedroom to live in, and when you ask for more (because initially the entire house belonged to you) they beat you, wound you, kill more family members to make you afraid so that you can't ask for more. But do you think you can really live there in peace with them ever? Really?????
        5. One thing is certain, you can occupy a land, kill its people for hundreds or thousand years but that land will never be yours because for as long as these Palestianins continue to live and breathe they will fight for their land. And who knows maybe in 10 years, 50 or 100 years world powers may change and Palestinians become stronger then what will happen to the Jews? will they be wiped out? Maybe, maybe not but they should seriously change their politics because their politics are awful. Also you can't leave this legacy for next generations because man this is seriously wrong.
        6. Also they call Palestinians terrorists, really? their acts and their methods are of terrorist' ones however one should ask the question, why do they blow themselves up? really who wants to do that, no matter how religious you are it is hard to go through that? Nobody blows themselves up, unless you really pushed them against the wall. How would you feel not being able to leave your town to go anywhere? how would you feel if you lived in a jewish dominant state (because someone decided to occupy your country) and your kids have no future, they can't go to college etc? These are the questions that you should ask before you take any sides. Here in US a blackout happens and people have no electricity for 5 days and they get edgy and start acting crazy.

This is all so sad, but history tells us that you can't occupy one's land forever because everything has an ending. Also didn't Jews learn that force cannot bend nobody down? what did the Nazis do to them and couldn't bend the jews down? I think those who have more power should be more vigilant and should promote peace, democracy, racial equality , gender equality, because war doesn't bring nothing good, it just messes up people for life and and leaves a bad legacy for younger generations.

(New Yorker)- Short, concise background, but you leave out the part where the Jewish folks won a war...or two... So they exercised a form of hostile takeover, like the fundamentalists did in Iran right? So it's not like they "stole" land, or came into someone's house. Would the US Government ignore Native American rocket attacks on Washington? Israel has been recognized as a legitimate state by all the western governments. Remember, the Palestinians had a lot of public opinion support before they started blowing themselves up. Ghandi didn't light himself on fire, Mandella didn't order rocket attacks. The Palestinians could have chosen to live in Israel and elect officials or protest the right way and they'd be better off now, instead of horrifying the world with suicide bombings and rocket attacks on schools....

        November 19, 2012 at 11:15 am |
      • new yorker

(PerryHair) Right, but the war they won was against who? and it would be a take over for example if the people go against the government and win and take majority of the government. However by taking over it doesn't grant you the right to create/form a country at the expense of another country? or does it? if you won the revolution/war then form a government but do not expel millions of people to other countries and form a country. And the fundamentalists in Iran didn't create a country within Iran, a country? that is the difference.

And do not compare Israel and Palestine to US and Native Americans. America was a new found land detached from the rest of the world, Palestine wasn't, and Palestine had thousands of years of history it is a sacred land. And as far as I know Native Americans have a lot more rights in US than Palestinians do in Israel and they even don't have to pay taxes. Their children do not get killed and they do not live in an enclave like Palestinians in Gaza. Furthermore they are not controlled by the police on the bounds of the territories.

And let me tell you something, I guarantee that if you had to live in a city blocked completely from the outside world with no future and prosperity for you, your family or your kids you would have 3 options: 1. escape the city, 2. commit suicide, 3. blow yourself up or do anything crazy.

You're saying "The Palestinians could have chosen to live in Israel and elect officials or protest the right way and they'd be better off now, instead of horrifying the world with suicide bombings and rocket attacks on schools...." and my response to you on that is:

The Jews could have chosen to live in Palestine/Jordan and elect officials or protest the right way and they'd be better off now, instead of starting campaigns of mass murder killings of men and children, women and elderly so that they could wipe out the entire ethnic population of Palestine in order to create the state of Israel, so that then, they can offer Palestinians the peace and the right to elect their officials in a democratic way. And what Israel is doing right now is exactly what you said horrifying the world with killing innocent children and innocent people.

Jason.... Hamas backed by Iran are the ones who started this! Why is it that Israel gets the blame...for years the attacks are always directed at Israel, not the other way around! The main stream media is blinding you just as much as Obama is...Satan is everywhere! and I demand that the main stream media stop posting pics of Palestinians being attacked by Israelis, when the pics are NOT accurate...photoshopped or they are from a different place and time!!! If the main stream media wants to depict Hamas as the innocent ones, then they can all Get Out of the USA and live with them and be reporters for the Terrorists of the world! and take Obama with you!

jews came and took a land form palestinians/arabs, and pushed them out of their land, really? and theres no future for the kids. wow , so israel does not pay for arabs living in israel and for their education?. there was nothing ther, you people live in the dummp and thats what Gaza is now, where ever jews live land prospers, and there is future, the only reason arabs do not like jews is for its existance, it s kinda pathetic and sad, i understand, that a mother sends her child to die so that he kills some jews with him, pretty sad, i would be violant as well if my mother didnt love me. arab countries have no future and no education. sad sad sad, no smart pple to lead them, only brainwashed fanatics who have no opinion. you people are controlled, and have no free will.

(New Yorker) Sorry, just saw your reply. I do understand your points, however, the Jews argue that the Arabs took it from them to begin with and so on into infinity. What I meant was that, though we frown upon it now to say the least, when a foreign power takes control of another country, it becomes a struggle for recognition. Israel is, for better or worse, part of the world now. So the Palestinians can either take it back by force, or take it back through political means. Whether you call them "freedom fighters" or "terrorists" depends on your perspective. But if it's a war they're fighting, then they have to be prepared to face the consequences instead of fighting, then calling on the world to help them after they throw a punch. It's a horrible situation to be sure, but if they can't take it back, and they can't stand to live there (and I don't blame them as you say), then you're faced with an internal conflict....have to leave. I wish there was a "humane" solution, but 60 years says this isn't going to sort itself out

Historical facts. The land of Israel has never been occupied by people called palestinians. This term was coined recently in 1900. For 2000 years the area was ruled by succession of European invaders and Moslem invaders whose descendants now call themselves "Palestinians". Historically the land belongs to Jews and was rightly given back to remants of Jews in 1948 whose populations was boosted up by arrival of European Jews and other jews from Arab countries were they were scattered. Hence for palestinians to claim the whole land as theirs is historically inaccurate. Thats why all archeological digs have found jewish artifacts and no palestinian artifacts because they were recent comers to the land and can not claim what is not historically theirs.

There are no winners, just losers. Israel might march into Gaza and eventually march back out. The game will start all over again in due time. In my opinion there is no solution, Palestinians want the entire land back and that objective will remain for ever. Israel will never have peace, as I said no winners just losers.

If pushed hard enough and far enough Israel has the power to end the palestinian problem once and for all and to shock the rest of the arab world back to reality. I expect the arabs will continuie to push until this becomes a reality. Remember Israel has the weapons to nearly exterminate the entire arab population. In their death throws I am sure they will resort to using those weapons and taking as many with them as possible.

There's no such thing as the "Palestinians want the land back"...it was never theirs to begin with just as there were never any Palestinians...they're mostly Jordanians and that's where they should go back...Israel belongs to Jews and will remain in Jewish hands for eternity! get used to it!

UN has become the puppet organization for those countries holding veto power and always bias and use the organization for their own political interest and never get thing done. It's now a useless organization.

Palestinian people in Gaza have suffered for many years under extreme blockage which also killed hundreds of children and many other people through out the strip. Palestinian wants to live in peace just like everyone else but Israel is not even allowing basic items to enter Gaza strip, so imagine you are in a large prison without clean water, no medicine, no food, no money and for sure no place to go,, it is not easy.... Unemployment is rock sky and many people tried to enter Gaza from the sea but again Israel attacked every ship gets close ,,, ex the Turkish ship,,, 9 turkish civilians died from that attack.... if Israel goes to a war with Palestinian,, many many many children will die ,,, it will make the problem even worse and worse, my opinion is simply give them the right to live,, give them the chance to get involve with the outside world and educate them .. and for the person who claims no such thing called Palestine, I highly advise you to read more about the history of Palestine.

You are so ignorant, you make me want to cry. What history of Palestine ?
There is no such thing!!! The name was given to the region by the Roman Empire, Before Arabs even existed! And the people that lived there. what do you know... They were Jews!!!!!!!! Read a book idiot! Archaeological findings confirmed Jewish settlements all over Israel. The land was called Eretz Israel, before it was changed to Palestine by... The Romans! So where did these so called Palestinians come from? Jordan. That is still about 60% of it's population are Palestinians. Please learn history before you make up a new one, or buy into the biggest lie since the catholic church decreed that the world is flat!
As for the horrible treatment of Palestinians, Read amnesty reports, there conditions are considered better than most Arab countries in the world. The only thing holding them back is Hamas and the stupid people they choose in their so-called democratic elections. The truth is billions of dollars from all over the world streams to the Palestinians, but the population doesn't get a cent of it... wanna know why, Hamas. before that Arafat, who's widow is leaving a life of riches beyond your imagination from money originally destined to be given to the population.
As always Arabs are each others worse enemy, Look at Syria. .

Right, so here i am responding to yet another idiotic remarks!
Listen carefully, Israel doesn't just take from America, it gives back ten folds!
Half of your technology today is courtesy of Israel, Your weapons, your medical devices, your agriculture, your everything!!!!!
Your goverment knows that. hell the silicon vally knows that. why else do you think there are so many innovation centers, and centers of excellence of major global companies all over the world in Israel? Because you all want part of the pie, and believe it or not, Israel is it!
We are not just called the Start Up nation, that's who we are! We built our country in less than 100 years into the blooming Eden that it is now. It was a wasteland before, don't take my word for it, Mark Twain wrote about his journey to the land of Israel in 1867. He called it a swampland.
The relationship between US and Israel are very good, not just because they are financially beneficial to both parties, like it or not, but because we also share the same values and Israel is the only democracy in the middle east, the only one! If you talk about abandoning the only state that stood by the US through thick and thin, then you are no different than the same people that stood and watched while 6 millions Jews, and over millions of others crippled, gay, gypsies, Russians, and other nationalities were murdered by the Nazis in WW2.

And the Dome is active for over 2 years now, because Israel is bombarded by rockets in the south for over 13 years!
7 years ago Israel cleared out of the west bank, leaving it in the control of the Palestinians. Instead of doing something useful with it, they put up rocket launchers which means that in the past 7 years they have been able to target about 25% of Israel's land, I.e civilians!
I wish for once i'd actually run into knowledgeable people instead of idiots like you, really it's getting tiresome and ridicules, if you can't read or won't even try, then shut up.

The israel – Gaza violence means? is that the israelis to use the Palestinians as a target to test/caliper the Iron Dome before it goes to war with Iran. Unfortunately, this is the tragedy of the Palestinians.

wanted Gaza to be independance, but they do not want it, they want the land of Israel to be their. Well, here is the problem, they will keep live in dirt and war until they will change. It is all a matter of education. think about it: When the Israeli army kill an arab citizen, child or woman, no one happy in Israel about it. When they kill an Israeli citizen, they dance and give sweets for free on the streets, by the way, they did the same on 09/11. Good luck to the western world.

Palestine wants the Holy Temple which in turn is suicidal and will bring about armaggeddon. Neither will recieve aid from me. I could care less about the burning babies bodies in the street.

Not only have human lives been lost and hatred bred for years, but think of the economic loss to both the Palestinians and the Isralies over the past thrity or so years...aqre both that stupid that they cannot live in peace and prosper? If Arabs really cared, they would give the entire Sinai to the Palestinians, but that will never happen.

Before the Benghazi attacks, there were calls to move business infrastructure to Libya after the fall of Gadafi.
This would move the country closer to economic stability, and this benefits the global economy.
Then the attack occured. Only an enemy of the Arab world would supress the economic future of Libya and at the exact same time, only an enemy of the US would attack our consulate. Now, if we move this line of thought to the current events in Israel/Pal. taken with the timing, we all need to ask ourselves, if we are being duped.

Of COURSE we're being duped! Not by governments and media, though as much as by ourselves; we've eagerly chosen to believe Islam is peaceful and tolerant, so when it behaves naturally, we think our governments and media are trying to dupe us somehow. It is the Muslims who are duping us, and it is WE, who snarf up their pablum of lies, who are their very willing victims.

Politically, most governments in the free world have to try to give their public what they want. With our public, throughout the free world, thinking of Islam as benign, our leaders have to follow suit.

If we, as the public, ever DO study Islam and refuse to deny the horrific realities of it, our leaders will follow suit there, too.

So YOU are among the willing and eager duped.

As a scholar of Islam since 1994, I can say this flatly:

Islam is the worst threat humanity has ever faced.

Now will you crack a book, so you can confirm/deny what I just said? Or will you just keep on grousing about being duped by media and government? How about a bit of "fact checking" on your own? The real truth of Islam is easily available. Muslims know that most people won't be bothered to study it. Those who DO study it thoroughly will learn about the hoax of "peace and tolerance" in Islam. Those who do NOT study Islam never do learn this.

So in due time, we will ALL learn these hard truths and realities – the hard way – when the jihadis are on our own doorsteps. If you think that can't happen, that they wouldn't DARE, it shows how thoroughly duped you are.

Muslims are the most thoroughly-practiced conquerors the world has ever known. To them, jihad and conquest is LIFE ITSELF.

You might read my other posting, and crack a book or two (Quran and Hadith), so maybe YOU won't remain duped. You won't, though, will you?

Which is precisely how the Muslims want you to be – duped and vulnerable to them.

doabitofhomework: if you have done any homework which you have not, you would not come up with hateful, propoganda, and lying comments. Further how can you be a scholar on Islam when you know nothing of Islam? You are obviously jewish pretending you to be somthing else, and your rhetoric and false statements should be made in the Israeli paper the Haeeretz which contains anti-islamic messages along with hate messages that lead to violence, its people like you that just want to watch the world burn, you're the terrorist

      • truthordare7

Jason, maybe you are the one who is duped too. Do a little research and find it our for yourself. Islam is a hateful religion. Sure, most religions do have some sort of hateful elements to it, especially Abrahamic ones, but today, in this century, Islam is the one which is responsible for 2/3 of the world conflicts. Each and every one of these Jhihadis quote from Quran and admit they do it in the name of their God and Mohammed. You go back and study it and it is there, in plain black and white. Islam is the greatest threat to humanity in our age, with its backward looking imbeciles trying to dictate the morality of the world and who refuses to tolerate plurality of voices and perspectives. Look at the 57 or so muslim majority countries and you will notice not one of them have signed the United Nations human rights declaration and instead came up with their own in 1996 or somewhere where Islam is above all. They come into civilized countries and use the secular laws to further their own ends. These people must be rooted out and thrown back into the decaying embers of middle east purgatory and left there.

So, you are finally starting to see the role of Iran in all the trouble springing up in the mkiddle east. Most people can't put 2 and 2 together. Iran sends arms to gaza through the tunnels from Siani, they send missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon through syria, they are involved in the Syrian civil war, they are threatening the US and most of the gulf states and they had a hand in killing our ambassador in Libya. They are building nuclear weapons and we seem unwilling to stop them. Get ready, something is going to have to happen soon.

truthtodare, you are obviously not as educated as you think in these affairs of the middle east. Islam is not the problem here, people using Islam are the problem.(And when I say 'people' I am referring to both Muslims and non-Muslims) The root of most of the conflicts we see today is driven by Power, Control, Greed, the enormous gap between the rich and the poor, the economic control of super powers on poorer nations and might I add the unbelievable greed of the leaders of these poorer nations. The world is going to continue to witness these conflicts till the end of time and religion is going to be used when either side feel it benefits their cause.

Israel has consistently said that it will trade land and accept a new Palestinian state IF the Palestinians and their Arab brothers stop killing Israelis and live in peace with their neighbors. But the Palestinians consistently reject this. They reject it with words at the negotiating table and they reject it with suicide bombers, rocket and mortars aimed at civilian targets. Why does the media only pay attention when Israel finally responds to the hundreds of rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli civilians over the past few months? Why does the media never seem to notice months and months of Arab attacks on Israeli civilians? Why do they only notice when Israel finally retaliates by attacking a militant leader, a legitimate military target who hides behind women and children?

      • doabitofhomework

You're probably essentially correct, but you are overly focused on the details, rather than on the real problem.

There is no outcome in Syria that could be thought of as an improvement by the free world. Whichever way it goes, it'll be BAD NEWS.

If Assad is victorious, Iran will retain its foothold there, and I don't need to tell you how undesirable that would be. Also Assad's atrocities would continue. Even so, though, the government would remain secular.

But if any group of rebels succeeds, Syria will promptly become yet another Islamic State. At the very least, Assad has maintained a secular government, and THAT is what all rebel groups are seeking to put an end to. Look at the lovely little "bouquet" of new Islamic States which have come into being in only the last two years. Syria is going to become another one.

Our government is now trying to find a rebel group who truly DO want democracy and rights. They won't find even one, but what they're likely to find are the best liars. We've GOT to realize that expecting Muslims to EVER react the way most people in the world WOULD react is always a mistake. Their ways and thoughts and beliefs are wildly different from those anywhere else. They are not merely different, but are entirely aside from, "other-than", anything on the planet.

You will please note that when rebels overthrew their governments, the leaders of those governments had maintained a secular state. This is probably the main reason the U.S. had historically supported them at all: to keep those nations from becoming precisely what they HAVE become: new Islamic States. And the worst is now yet to come.

        Syria is next.

I'd be in anguish for the people being killed there, except for one thing: they're all Muslims, doing what Muslims do best: killing and conquering. They're doing what they WANT to do. I still ache for the innocent children and those who are not Muslims, but how can I ache for the Muslim adults, who are merely doing what Muslims DO? How can I ache for people who revere violence, atrocity and slaughtering?

The real problem, of course, is Islam. Islam rubs off compassion, the ability to compromise, and all reverence for human life. In their place, it injects bottomless hate, love of slaughter, and a single-track minded hunger for conquest. We ignore Islam and its effects, very much to our own peril. How can I feel compassion for people whose god tells them I deserve to be slaughtered? Silly me.

Time and again the Arabs have spoken through bombs, suicide-terrorist attacks, and missiles raining down indiscriminately about the peace they desire. As long as their pardigm is to allow the most brutal element based in fundamental religious ideology control their lives and dictate their foreign policy, then this is what they will get. Have they not learned this yet? Why is it taking so long for them to figure this out? If you keep getting beat up for provoking someone, you stop provoking them and try to find a way to get what you are trying to get without getting beat up. But this problem is not only isolated to Israel and Gaza, it is throughout the Arab world.

Israel has tried and tried again to negotiate with the palestinians and just when it seems they will reach agreement some palestinian faction will bomb a bus or a cafe opr send a bunch of rockets into Israel or they will make new and unrteasonable demands. Israel has been trying for 40 years to solve their problems with the Arabs but the Arabs will have no part of it. If the palestinians truly wanted a coun try free of the Israeli's they could have had it years ago but it would have settled nothing. Israel pulled out of Gaza 3 or 4 years ago and turned everything over to the Palestinians. The very next day the Palestinians started firing rockets into southern Israel and have continued to do it ever since. How many on this blog are aware that Israel has provided jobs in Israel to the palestinians and they used this access into Israel to detonate bombs. How many are aware that Isrtael has provided humanitarian aid to Gaza free of charge food, water, medicine and other goods and allows the free flow of goods and materials into Gaza through Israel only preventing shipments of materials that could be used for military purposes.

        Hakim,

During the six-day-war, Israel was attacked by Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Algeria and others also contributed troops and arms to the Arab forces. The Arabs literally bet the farm in 1967... And lost.

Israel stopped the attacks, repelled the invaders and captured the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) from Jordan, Golan Heights from Syria, Sinai and Gaza from Egypt.

Now, please name ANY Arab country that has given back territory gained by military action.

Any Arab living in Gaza should thank God that Israel does not play by Arab rules.
Think about what would have happened to the Jews in Israel, if the Arabs had won.

If you need something else to compare the situation to...
I'm sure that Mexico would like to have Texas and California back. What do you think their chances are?

The Israelis evacuated every Israeli from Gaza in 2005. No one prevented the Gazans from turning their little strip into a Mediterranean resort destination. Except the Gazans and Hamas, whose determination to wipe out Israel is their only goal, and who will howl in protest about return fire when they spend every penny of their economy and every ounce of their international agenda on attacking Israel.

To be honest, few really want another war in the region, in which civilians would undoubtedly suffer as much as the militants. It's election soon in Israel, a war in the Gaza Strip might not benefit Netanyahu. The region had just recovered from the short war 4 years ago and Palestinians want to focus on their economy. Egypt has its own problems to tackle at home.

That election you mentioned was called early the PM. He is looking for a mandate from the people in turbulent times. Israel's democracy must hold elections more often and on-demand as regional issues demand it. Pls, understand just how different it is from America.

Just a general question: (This is actually part of my homework for a Middle Eastern Studies class I am taking at university)
I'd like to hear some people's opinions on how/when they expect the overall violence and ongoing civil wars throughout the middle east to end? Speculating of course that eventually it will quell. Obviously this is a very complicated and difficult question to attempt to answer, but I'm focusing mostly on the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Does anyone think it will just take time for a new younger generation to come of age and to change the cultural dynamic of the 2 nations? or is this an vicious cycle of violence and history that has no forseeable end?

There is a poem by Mamoud Darwish that depicts an israeli and a palestinian stuck in a deep well, so it begs the question of, who will be the one out first, or who will come to help them escape-?

The answer will come from Europe when the Moslem will be a threat. We can see today that the popularity of the extreme right wings is increased rapidly. The history repet itself and there willl be a battle between the West and the Moslems.
I predict that it will start in 2039.

The hope is that with social media the powers that lead the middle east will lose control and no longer be able to brainwash the public. Unfortunately, Egypt showed us that even though the masses have access to social media they were not able to mobilize in time to prevent the radical Muslim Brotherhood from taking power. Majority does not rule, the organized, radicalized are the one's taking over. Slow moderate transitions (like the one Mubarak proposed and Clinton/Obama rejected) was the only avenue that would have prevented what we have now. A radicalized Muslim Brotherhood controlling Egypt. No good new in the short term, my prayers are with the people of Israel and hope they are able to survive the next century. With only 5 million jews in Israel, surrounded by 1 billion muslims in various countries, none of them recognizing the right of Israel's existence, it is difficult to imagine their fate it a peaceful one until the muslim world begins to tolerate other religions.

there is no end because new generations of palestinians are taught to hate immediately. no end because moslem powers in the area keep on funding militants for there own gains.

the only thing that will end it is a war on the scale of WWII. After WWII, Europe was so relieved to be at peace, that it held until today and created a new reality of cooperation. It took loss on that scale to create change that dramatic in one or two generations. How much loss will it take in the middle east to make them unanimously cry for peace? we all watch helplessly as the middle east gears up for war. there are multiple countries in the middle east that want a greater say in what happens... and they are all willing to challenge the traditional powers. stay tuned!

There is no end in sight. The Arabs teach hatred in their schools, so no younger generation will see things differently. In fact, it is hatred that holds the Palestinians together. They can't decide on a leader and don't even trust their own families. A better "when" question is when will the world say enough to Muslim Terrorism and squash it once and for all..

Oh please... can you stop with your hasbara nonsense. Its easy for a country, the only nuclear power in the ME, with the latest weapons to pummel a small piece of land whenever it feels like it – murdering and maiming innocent women and children. Did you know that before the Israelis assassinated Ahmed Jabrail he was about to sign a long term truce with Israel which was brokered by the Egyptians. Israelis don't want peace, they never have, all they want is land.

Why is Israel the one to blame here? this conflict is very black and white, and you clearly do not know about picking "The lesser of two evils" is it a coincidence that the only Jewish and True democratic state in the ME has Egypt, Syria, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, most of the Arab countries ticked at them. in a fued that's been going on for thousands of years. Can you tell me which of these countries are for inclusion, and a better quality of life, and which ones have called for Israels destruction and the destruction of the jews. which countries align themselves and their values to Iran and their line of thinking that echoes that of Nazi Germany. and those are the ones you feel are oppressed? You must not be from the west, or are an Arab opportunist in the west, very-ill informed, or a racist.

I watch the news from all different countries, and a great number of influential Arab leaders have called for Israel's and the Jews destruction. If Canada and Britain and Australia said that about America, would that still be a one-sided arguement? Mahmoud Amedimajad has said the Islam will "Wipe Israel off the face of the map" and you're on their side? If Russia said that about your people, how would you sleep at night? well, I guess you probably wouldn't know as you never had to practice "Duck in Cover" drills before. I agree that Israel has done wrong things, but with the opposition against them, this is the best alternative. all other options are not enough. Arabs have alll that land, yet you believe they're in the right because this small little piece of sand should be theirs too?

these are not philosophical issues, human lives are involved.
i can only speak for myself , but seeing as I'm an Israeli who has been bombarded for the last 8 years i feel that my opinion caries a little more weight than most of yours. Sadly, i don't think that the two factions (Israeli government & Hamas) have any desire to cease hostilities. If you don't understand why then you are just naive, the crux of the matter is that when one country in this Godforsaken region becomes a little more extreme, all the other ones follow suite.
U asked when this conflict will be resolved, truthfully, WE don't know, i think that most of us have given up hope,

I cant live in a nation propped up by radical Islam. I reject all it stands for, but feel they should be included in the process of democracy (like they are when they are a citizen of Israel) . I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard Israel's enemies spout out things in Sharia law. It is obvious it hinders the world's progression. and they complain when they're not in control. If you live in peace with Israel, you will be left alone, raise a hand and you will be taken care of. Jews have been in Israel since biblical times, they were exiled 2000 years ago. any archaeological will tell you the evidence proves that fact! The palestinians decided to put their lot in with the arab nations attacking Israel. THEY LOST. You are now an enemy. If you chose to live well, be peaceful.

  19. Hate Wins

Israel would most likely not be a topic if Hitler had been stopped. Also most important if as a group the Palestinians and their supporters had won the war in 1948.
They out numbered and out gunned the Israelis.
But their was very little cross border trust in the Arab world in 1948 and still that way today.
They need to learn to trust each other and maybe then they can make peace with Israel and children will stop dying.
Their current leader(s) don't want peace because it reduces their power and influence.
The Arab fighter is as good fighter as any in the world. But have never shown the ability to unit across tribal boundaries thier fragmented efforts will never achieve their goals.
WHY You have too many little Napoleons.
The Israelis on the other hand fight with their backs against the wall and train accordingly as a united team no matter what their political leaning are.
Make peace and share the land or your hate will continue this life of death and destruction.

what do you mean unprovoked, they just assassinated one of their elected leaders, the illegally occupy other people for over 50 years, they treat them worse than we treat our pets here, the hold funds, water and have built road blocks all over the towns where they live, they build on their lands illegally, I can go on for hours about these thugs that control the Israeli government. Maybe you should move over there in these conditions and see how long you would last.

Perverting everything that is good to bad. Why do you think some people in this world HATE jews? Because Jesus being a jew silenced the devil at the cross. Hitler, killed millions of jews, why, because he was being deceived by the spirit of anti christ, the devil. Now tell this day some people on this erath are being run by a spirit of anti christ because of what JESUS CHRIST did over 2000 years ago on the cross. No surprise whats going on in the middle east. Where does the US fit into this? We've quickly lost most of our leverage in the area, with Israel and Saudi Arabia (as well as a few other smaller states) being our only real friends (and is SA a real friend? or a friend of convenience). In some ways it's a bit easier with fewer friends – you don't have to worry as much about offending your enemies as you do your friends. But of course we worry about offending everyone. It's obvious that the majority of the Arab world would like to see the destruction of Israel, and that is not likely to change.

The solution is very simple, stop the occupation and confiscation of Palestinian land, allow them to live in dignity and peace , then they have no excuse any longer. Israel has no intention of doing so by their actions of building settlements in the heart of the West Bank and Jerusalem and the Arab and the rest of the world knows that. So at every opportunity, Israel cries foul and keeps playing the same game while displacing the Palestinians and expanding their empire

If I had a charter that calls for the destruction and war with a Israel, i would invest in ways to keep my people safe, not invest in ways to kill as many israelis as possible. 30,000 syrian civilian deaths....that is what it looks like dealing with arabs. approx 50 deaths is what it looks like when dealing with Israel....YOU do the math.

Their comfort zone is the terrorism business, they could care less about a "Palestinian state". As for the people of Gaza revolting against them, probably not a good idea, they would get slaughtered. I don't see anyone here revolting against the Mafia, same thing.

King56, I'm not even going to bother arguing with you. I have seen enough around the world. Bin Laden, Assad, Khomeini, Ghaddafi, Hussein, Ahmedinijad, and Hamas. All lumped into the same category. Anything they stand for, the civilized world stands against. If you choose to support them, enough said. Gaza is a hell hole because instead of investing in schools, hospitals, businesses, Hamas chose to turn it into a weapons manufacturing and storage center, hiding ammunition amongst civilians, and doing everything they can to kill Jews. But of course, it is the "zionists" fault. What a load of garbage. You are a disgrace to humanity.

      How interesting !

      Israeli soldiers occupy Palestine.
They treat all Palestinians as prisoners in their own land.
They make people wait at checkpoints for hours, then refuse to let them through.
Israeli guns are trained on Palestinians on a daily basis.
They have complete control over who enters or leaves Palestine.

      And nothing is said.

Then the Palestinians take action and it's the big news that the poor Israelis are being attacked.

How would it be if Canada occupied the US and we sent a couple of rockets into Montreal? IT WOULD BE JUSTIFIED.

Why are they occupied? Because they can't act like civilized people. Instead of peace, they want war. Instead of using their billions of $$ in charity they get, they buy rockets from Iran. Israel left Gaza hoping that it would bring peace....you know what happened there. Time to look in the mirror. Accept Israel, denounce Hamas and terrorism, use the money to build rather than destroy, and then live in peace.

Both Palestinian ( Arabs ) and Israeli ( Jews ) have the same right to leave in this land, same as their ancestors for millennia.
So to claim and fight that this is the land of either side is a fight with no hope to end.
The Palestinian have to accept this fact and accept to live in peace beside the Israeli. But now if they want a nation they have to demonstrate this with facts and not only words. Facts by stopping the killings, the rockets and the threats of annihilation. Show to the world that they really want to leave in peace and prosper beside an already prosperous nation.
Then I am 100% sure that all nations in this world ( I say all ) will help them to build their nation, build houses for their refugees, build and industry with sound investments for sound economy and last but not least, convince Israel to move out settlers form their assigned territories.
I worked with Palestinian in several ME countries, and I can say they are excellent business men and traders, they are as good as the Lebanese and the Israeli, so there is no reason why Palestine cannot become a prosperous and wealthy nation, like Israel and Lebanon.
The tough part is to convince the extremist fringes of the Palestinian that this is the only way to go if they want to give a secure nation and future to their children.

What this violence means is that the people running this world are crazy, immoral to allow such a scale of human misery of the Palestinians. The UN is just like the League Of Nations before it, prior to WW II -it served the international bankers and were responsible for orchestrating WW II in which many of my relatives died. So it is today. There is starvation amids plenty, endless wars to enrich a few because the UN is the servant of the international bankers. In my view the Globalist Agenda and the useless UN needs to be abolished along with IMF. All they do is create wars, indebt nations-create misery , huge unemployment. We need some sane people to lead the world in a different direction.

Their people will suffer for it. The rest of the world should see this as a pilot for an independent Palestinian state. Why would the UN want a new state that is solely bent on attacking another recognized state. Crazy.

Why is the violence we’re seeing today so much worse than in recent years? To this you reply...

"The (Israeli) citizenry has a real demand for safety and security."

Those Israelis and their desire to live without the fear of being murdered by an illegitimate terrorist-lead "state." The mere fact that we as U.S. citizens can discuss this topic is reason enough to support Israel. Reason and Democracy must be protected at all costs. Hamas has no intention of recognizing Israel as a legitimate state regardless of Israeli concessions. Hamas advocates archaic, 5th century values of squashing women's rights, fidelity at the cost of life and a racist, male-dominated society that has no place in the modern world.

"That should go along with a normalization of Hamas’s political position." What does this mean? It sounds like utter nonsense. Does it mean Hamas should decide to be "normal" or does it mean their position on the destruction of Judaism in the Holy Land should be accepted as "normal". Hamas considers its position normal already – as does large majorities of Islamic nations. On the other hand, except for neo-Nazis in the West, Hamas' position is considered barbaric.

Is that all you can come up with Massoud? It was actually 34 people, but what's another 5 when we are spreading lies and propaganda, right? Israel also publicly apologized, it was investigated and found by all sides to have been a mistake. Then Israel payed something like 40 million dollars to the victims families. Please, let's keep the discussion relevant and honest. Oh, yeah, you are grasping at straws here since your side clearly does not have the moral high ground.

If you want to support Israel over America that is your choice but I am tired of us giving foreign aid and having to fight their wars let Israel stand on its own Americans are tired of Israel sending our troops and money to die and get injured for them.

The answer for the Palestinian conflict and world violence is a MASSIVE CONVERSION OF MUSLIMS TO CHRISTIANITY.
CHRISTIAN ARAB churches should unite in order to convert millions of brainless Muslims. It is a fact that if Palestinians were Christians no Muslim country or radical Muslims would have supported their cause.

This article is written completely from the perspective of Israel. "If this goes on and Israel gets pulled into a ground invasion into Gaza". Seriously, this is written, like Israel has no choice, but to launch a ground invasion. Really? That would be amazing...

The comments about Jordan are high level and lead the reader to be bad conclusions. I've been to Jordan three times in the last 1.5 years. I've been 100% safe every time as a blond, white woman – sometimes even traveling alone. This article makes it sound like Jordan is on the brink of civil war. The country has been going through political reforms, yes, they are slow, but no slower than our own US Congress. The protests right now are because the government is running out of money and the subsidy previously provided for gasoline and propane has been removed. In a country with a lot of the population on sustenance living this is a big deal, but not a civil war.

This reporting, like much of what I see being reported from the Middle East is irresponsible. It leads the western world to view the Middle East as something it's not. And all the while Israel looks like a victim. Way to go! Great objective reporting!!!!

It's going to come down to an invasion of Gaza in order to get rid of Hamas. That's true weather Israel invades now or not. As long as Hamas keeps firing rockets into Israel there can be no peace. Seems like the international community is determined to drag this out even longer with "peace talks" but that's only delaying the inevitable. If Hamas is gone than maybe there can be peace between Palestine and Israel.

There is only one real way for there to be peace in the region and to end the violence and wars which has spanned more than 60 years. People have to know the truth as Hamas and all radical Islamic terrorist groups must be destroyed. Israel mistakes is that being it is a strong military has been using weak approaches to protect its international reputation. The problem by pushing a publicity campaign in PR the cancer has been left over. The pro-Palestinian movements are also criminals in my mind as because of people like them people in Israel have been killed and as a result the war escalates forming deaths on both sides. I consider pro-Palestinian movements hypocritical as they always have been. Most people should listen to Geert Wilders criticism, Richard Dawkins, Pat Condel, Wafa Sultan, Brigitte Gabriel for ACT 4 America, Robert Spencer, Salmun Rushdie regarding why this violence never seems to end. Now what angers me is that if the Palestinians in Gaza are supporting rocket attacks which kill Israeli citizens they deserve to be punished along with Hamas, especially considering what they are promoting is founded on pure hypocrisy. Israel has a right to exist and always will, and nothing they will do as they have lost all the wars in the last 60 years will ever change that, nor will it change the fact that this has been a Jewish homeland for more than 3,800 years. Israel i am proud of you, and i am glad those poor losers are angry they are losing the war as they always have been. Israel do what should be done to protect its citizens and act in self defense and arrest all criminal activists and those who cause trouble for Israel.

The pro-Palestinian cause are the worlds biggest hypocrites. They claim Israel is a terrorist state but they are the ones who act like Nazis, promote Hitlers ideas among the hateful death for Jews ideals promoted by radical Islamic Jihadist extremists. Palestinians activists are the world's biggest hypocrites as the people who fire rockets kill Israelis, they plant bombs on women and children and use citizens as human shields. Is the world not smart enough to see the high level of hypocrisy promoted by groups of Hamas, which was supported by people like Osama Bin Laden? Al-Qaida, Taliban and Hezbollah along with all Jihad movements. Israel has done everything in its power to warn and stop citizens from getting killed in the crossfires to warning people to leave the areas targeted by Israel. Hamas are cowards who use citizens and houses to hide their arms and rockets and use any victims of war for political propaganda. Israel has a right to exist as a nation, the poor losers will be the people of Gaza and the terrorists who will lose badly by getting thrashed by Israel powerful military. Israel gave Gaza to the Palestinians for peace, the Sinai peninsula with oil to Egypt for peace? What did Israel gain in return? More rocket attacks and violence from the organized crime network Jihadists. They act like satanic spawns. The reason Israel has a wall is because people have been coming in the past as suicide bombers and attacking Israel by any means necessary, this includes rocket attacks. When the terrorists are gone from the region and Israel takes them all out of power at last there will be real peace. Israel should show no mercy to its enemies and do what is necessary to gain power and control the regions resources. Israel as hard it has been to build as a nation, its flaw is that it has been soft and way too kind to its enemies because they were seeking peace in the process. You can't deal with evil criminals in this manner, especially the ruthless ones and its hypocritical supporters who happen to be terrorist sympathizers and pawns in the Hamas social political ideology. Radical Islamic Jihadists are a cancer to this world, and they have been for many years. Obama if he has the courage he has to condemn Hamas harshly and put sanctions against the Palestinians for promoting war mongering rocket fire power to the region. The people who claim Israel does not have a right to exist and promote a resistance movement, are as much to blame as Hamas and all radical Islamic extremists groups for the escalating wars. Benjamin Nentanyahu has done the right thing by standing up for Israel and having its military take strong actions to take out the criminal elements in Gaza and all parts of Israel. This is a conflict which should have ended a long time ago, but it is continued because Palestinians support a criminal resistance movement promoting war and violence.

Add to this the fact that Muslims are religiously bound to hate to the point of killing most of the human race, including Muslims who aren't Muslim enough and any Jew anywhere, but especially in Israel, and you have an essentially hopeless situation. Good luck! Why anyone would want to live in a dead end dump like Gaza run by lunatic murders, gangsters, fanatics, and Iranian stooges like Hamas is beyond imagining. Any person so unfortunate as to be stuck in Gaza should build a raft and float away to somewhere better.

All the west has done is to delay the inevitable.

Both sides have no interest in peace. Peace can only be reached when both sides are sick of death and war. Let them fight it out until both side are knee deep in their own blood and are sick of it than peace can be reached.

All we the USA have done is delayed this process for the last thirty years. All we have done is allowed the terrorist like Hamas to continue to exist until technology has advanced so much that they can eventually get their hands on weapons that kill thousands.

Again, let them fight it out until they get sick of losing their children, wives, husbands and are tired of death then there will be peace.

It's so sad. There is no proper solution, we have three ancient cultures the were cradled and raised in such a small area, we have no right to tell any to leave. The only civilisation that handled it well was the Ottoman Empire, and that was disrupted when millions of Jews fled Europe to escape being killed by hitler and Mussolini.

Between year 70 A.D. and WW2 the Jewish population in Palestine was negligible. So, what is the legal base for the creation of Israel? Land has been stolen by force, and simply justified by winning wars. When a similar situation happened in Europe (Germany 1939-1945), it was evident who was at fault. Why isn't it the same now? I feel sorry for the Palestinian because of their religion: apparently, if you are Muslim, you are stripped of any right to defend your belongings.

    Israel’s war crime in Gaza

To date, the Israeli government has induced hundreds of thousands of its own citizens to illegally settle in the Occupied West Bank and in East Jerusalem where it has forced the eviction of many hundreds of Arab residents – in violation of international law and of the authority of the United Nations. These illegal settlements plus the six year blockade of Gaza are the reasons for the continuing conflict and the horrific massacre now being perpetrated among the 1.7 million in Gaza in an illegal attempt to effect a forced regime change by the assassination of its political leaders.

The US, who has supplied Israel with its war planes and bombs that are now killing and wounding civilians, including children, and even journalists, must bear responsibility for allowing this atrocity, the escalating violence and the dire threat of mounting conflict that could soon become a regional firestorm. Palestinian and European lives are of infinitely more importance than Mr Netanyahu’s re-election prospects.

Jews have been in Israel since biblical times. They were exiled 2000 years ago. Any archaeological will tell you the evidence proves this fact. The palestinians decided to put their lot in with the nations attacking Israel...THEY LOST. they are now the enemy. If the palestinians want to live well they need to be peaceful. Raise your hand against the lives of Jews/Israelis and you will be taken care of on the Israeli's terms. AKA "occupation" It's their decision.

I CAN STOP THE ROCKETS AND AVOID THE WAR – WILL YOU LISTEN

By Email and by Fax to Premier Netanyahu and POTUS

RE: A Solution for Israel that has never been heard – A short window of opportunity to win an Israeli-Palistinian peace settlement now exists and to avoid a new Gaza Hamas War. I CAN STOP THE ROCKETS AND AVOID THE WAR – WILL YOU LISTEN

To: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and CC TO POTUS
    and Defense Minister Ehud Barack
    Dear Prime Minister Netanyahu,

I personally am not known to you, however your brother was my kid brother Jonathan Abrahams's commander in the Golani Brigade. He now lives in northern Israel within 2 miles of the Lebanese border. He works for the Israeli government. He has a wife and four sons and has spent most of his adult life living in Israel. My parents, Abraham Judah Abrahams and Evelyn H. Abrahams lived in Israel for many years until they passed away in the 1990s in the US. They were good friends with Yitzak Shandar when he was with El Al. They lived in Kfar Vitkin.

I have an unusual different proposal to change the current status of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, that if successful will turn the Hamas and possibly Hezbollah, away from Iran. Even better it will stop the rockets and senseless attacks on civilians and it can change the face of the Middle East..

In light of the recent powerful developments from the“Arab Spring” in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and Syria, the current escalating Middle-East conflict in Gaza , there is a short window opening for a new and different approach to resolve this Middle-East Conflict. Since 1948 when Israel gained its independence, since the 1956 war, the 1967 war, the Yom Kippur war of 1973, the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict of 2006, and since the Israeli-Hamas conflict in Gaza in 2008 the world has only seen two ideologies in conflict with a perpetuation by the Palestinians of murder, suicide bombings, and senseless rocket attacks. Israel to preserve its security and safeguard its citizens has at times been forced to take targeted counter measures and to drastically restrict the movement of Palestinians by using numerous checkpoints within the State of Israel and the occupied territories. The settlements in the occupied territories are part of Israel’s security system, but are also a constant sore point for any peaceful settlement. Israel is the only nation that to defend itself must always go into the conflicts with two hands tied behind its back when it unleashes its military power with surgical precision.

The peace process is the fictional imagination of leaders on both sides of the conflict, because until the people’s hearts and minds (on both sides of the conflict) support the practice of peace (not a peace process) , there will never be a successful peace. When Palestinian children are taught in madrasas that it is their divine destiny to be suicide bombers, there can be no successful peace.

It is time to think outside the usual box and find a new approach to bring peace to this region. I propose using the world's most powerful, but most underutilized weapon system, that has decisively defeated terrorists and insurgents every time it has been used in Iraq. It is part and parcel of the “Arab Spring”. This weapon system is more powerful than a B2 bomber loaded with nuclear weapons. It is how this weapon system is used may determine its success. The use of this weapons system to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian ageless conflict will take heroics, expertise, and diplomatic finesse. It can be the missing diplomatic and political key to resolving this conflict. Part of the difference here will be the practice of peace on a trial basis by the people of both sides, rather than a peace process run by their leaders. The key is how to make this happen. A bonus will be the detachment of Hamas and possibly Hezbollah from the influence of Iran and how to convince them of this and to be a part of this new plan.

It will take powerful and eloquent world leaders who are willing to change world politics to successfully resolve this conflict. The timing is right if properly prepared and planned. President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton personally have experienced the power of this weapon system, and with their and your expertise, experience and world connections it can be successful.

I have previously written you, POTUS, President Bush, Congress and the media about this weapon system that can decisively defeat terrorists and insurgents. It is how this weapon system would now be used to change this conflict that will determine its success. Because of the delicate nature of this idea for the specific and intricate use of this weapons system in the Middle East, I will only speak of the details of it personally to preferably you or one of delegated personal representatives and to POTUS. I am approaching my 75th birthday and it my dream that in my lifetime that I leave this world when the time comes with having been instrumental in helping to accomplish the task to bring a possible peace to the State of Israel.

I believe that you, President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton can successfully guide the use of this weapons system to achieve what Presidents and Premiers before you aspired to. This can be your legacy, which will be far superior as a statesperson to any you might have ever achieved as Premier.

I sincerely hope that you will listen to this new and unique approach to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. All you have to lose is a little time to hear the unique use of this weapons system and see a vision of a peaceful and secure Middle East.

I leave you with one other thought from “WE THE PEOPLE”. Politicians, Governments, Presidents (and Presidents to be), Prime Ministers, Secretaries of State and Defense, Foreign Ministers, Defense Ministers, Parliaments, and Congresses make, declare and run Wars. However, it is always WE THE PEOPLE (and rarely, but not never, any of the above) who have to fight, be wounded or maimed, and die in the wars. True statesmen and stateswomen will only use war as a last method of dealing with terrorists and dictators of radical, totalitarian governments that use or support terror. Just as the pen is mightier than the sword, the "VOTE WEAPON" is more powerful than our mightiest military weapon. It is time to unleash its power to bring the practice of peace uniquely to the Middle-East.

My firm desire is “Next Year in Jerusalem”

    MRCANDU10 (Cousin of MR.Get-It Done)

Well Mr. Prime Minister. perhaps you and POTUS will listen and maybe our dream of a true peace can be achieved.

    Thank you
MRCANDU10 (Cousin of Mr. Get It Done)

I think untill Palestine is recognized as a country & Israel stops taking land from Palestine with no impunity the conflict will never end. I feel the U.S. created Israel and they should be thankful that they have land keep what they have and divide these two nations so that both nations can live at peace than if this does not work and Israel is attacked by all means defend yourself. But you can't bring peace when Israel also insights the otherside. There both in the wrong but Israel always has the backing of the U.S. and is funded by our government.

The land belongs to Israel since biblical times, and expelled only 2000 years ago. Archaeology evidence proves this beyond any doubt. They will not give their own land to a bunch of occupiers, the palestinians. Israel won 3 wars to keep what was theirs. If you want to live well, live peacefully with Israel. Seek war, and you forfeit the right to be treated as friend. It's the palestinian's choice.

What a shame to begin the article by implying that it was the upcoming Israeli elections that led to the crisis! No! It was the Morsi's difficulties in Egypt that he wanted to deflect and commanded Hamas to intensify the missle firing into Israel.

It will take multiple generations to bring peace between these two countries/peoples – and only if both of their schools teach children that all people are created equal and deserving of respect.

McCain suggests Bill Clinton as Middle East peace negotiator....

The man is an idiot...you never do what an idiot suggest and second the war in Gaza means nothing...it will end soon as Hamas runs out of rockets.....it will begin again in about 3 years when they finally collect another supply of rockets to do this again...NEGOTIATIONS DON'T WORK....Israel will have to conquer Gaza and exterminate Hamas there...that will be the only way to end the problem with Gaza.

What this conflict means is one more confirmation that voting for Obama was a big mistake. As Romney complained during the debates, Obama went on an apology tour throughout the Muslim countries and purposely avoided contacts with Israel, including during official events. That sent a clear message to terrorists that USA for the first time in history would not stand behind Israel any longer in the event of an attack. And only two weeks after the elections we are witnessing the results of a weakened American image overseas at the edge of an international war in the Middle East that could have been prevented had Obama acted as a real leader in foreign matters. "Good job" democrats.

The key issue is this: Hamas is trying to kill civilians on purpose (intentionally targeting civilians) and Israel is not. Second: while Israel tries to avoid civilian casualties, Hamas is using their own people as human shields, causing additional Palestinian casualties. Third, Israel wants peace but Hamas sees all of Israel as occupied territory and is committed to the destruction of Israel. No comparison, no symmetry, no equivalence. The world can either continue pressuring Israel to show restraint in its self defense - which will never bring peace. Or the world can pressure the Palestinians to get rid of Hamas, accept Israel, and choose peace. Only the latter can bring peace, prosperity and nationhood for the Palestinians.

    Erin Burnett;
Maen Rashid Areikat was a guest on you show this evening. He cited the the 104 dead and 850 injured in Gaza was equivalent to 19,500 dead and 160,000 injured. Where does the conceded schmuck get off equating 104 to 19,500 dead Americans and 850 injured to 160,000 injured Americans. The (every filthy word you know) PLO and Areikat can kiss my (%$#@ ass. There is no Arab walking around with his two seater camel dragging with a string of goats or Arab in a suit, in what world, could possibly hope to be equal to an American, ever! Arabs are one step away from nomads wandering in a desert. Areikat should go back to his cave.

Gaza is losing and no arab country has the ball the stand against israel. by the end of the day Hamas is the biggest loser. Ahmadinenijad , Nasralli and assad are scam bags their end is coming very soon. israel can launch a war against all the arabs and occupy them combined from Tanga (marocco) to the residence of AYATU ALLLA and nijad. What brave men to thow bombs among women and children. Cowards I say. Men should go to the streets alone (Hamas to fight Israli men alone leaving the women and children out of harms way. The only thing that will change this is is that every man throws down his weapan ( despite great human loss ) to say I will kill no more for a few hundred feet of soil. Yea there is nothing worth keeping on the killing. A truce to save the children instead of a pep rally to go and kill some more. Some more of what, another child. No one in the world say "Great is he who killed a 5 year old. One thousand years killing is enough. Stop now. Simply say no, we beg you who watch this 2012 field of killing.

does anyone really think that Hamas is doing this on its own

this is a divergent orchestrated by Iran to keep Israel from going after their nuclear development

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. the IAEA says Iran is building a nuclear weapon you know the IAEA the same "independent' organization that said Iraq had weapons of Mass Destruction, that got us the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars that killed many civilians and injured and killed many American soldiers. Cost us Trillions of Dollars and created more enemies around the world. Iraq and Afghanistan are worse of since our invasion and wars and so is America. We need to stop policing the world because it has clearly done us more harm than good.

So many of us support a world view simply because it seems to be the closest to their own hearts, when we forget or never really know the reasons behind it; it's so often been buried in years of politics, false stories, or even war. But at some point near the very beginning of all conflict, you'll find a man who lacked in morals, a man who wanted more power than one man should have over another. Maybe he felt smarter, or stronger, or somehow more worthy. Who knows? But he felt righteous, and so he claimed more than his share. And so it began. Don't all problems stem from this, really? Someone exerting will over another? What will happen unless we all accept that we all should have equal access to the things we most desire as human beings? Failure to embrace that mankind has to possess certain moral qualities to co-exist is our enormous achilles heel. The people without the morals required to co-exist are the weak link to our entire race. Many would agree with me that those fighting so hard against Democracy are less enlightened, that the basic morals seem to have been bred out of them. They threaten mankind. What a huge realization, so huge maybe we don't see it? But they do. And there will never be peace as long as there is idealism such as this. I have no solution, no comfort, just this simple observation that comes at a bad time and my own need to voice it.
