India rape protests

Is this the start of India's 'Arab Spring'?

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS" Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

From Global Public Square staff

The recent school shooting in Connecticut looked like a tipping point in U.S. public consciousness.

Americans have been asking themselves some tough questions: why does this happen so often and so much more in America than in other countries? What does gun violence say about us as Americans and what measures can we put in place to stop it?

A similar bout of public soul-searching was on display in India recently. Across the country, tens of thousands of people took to the streets to express outrage over the rape and death of one unnamed woman.

The latest on the case

The national attention over her death is shedding light on how unsafe Indian women actually are. According to the national crime records bureau, there were more than 24,000 registered rapes in 2011. That's one rape every 22 minutes in India. And those are just the ones we know about. By some accounts, only a tenth of all such crimes in India actually get reported.

Why such a shockingly high rate of violent crime? Indians are debating the reasons.

The reality is this: This is one more example of a government that simply does not deliver. India has a broken public safety system, little to no public surveillance and CCTV systems, and a corrupt police force.

According to the U.N.'s Office on Drugs and Crime, South Asia has one of the lowest ratios of police officers to civilians in the world. It also has among the fewest prosecutors as a percentage of the population.

There could be other factors. India has a demographic crisis. According to its 2011 census, there are only 9 women for every 10 men in urban India. That's one of the worst sex ratios, and that doesn't happen naturally. It happens because tens of thousands of Indians opt for abortions if they know they're having a daughter.

But these conditions are not unique. Some of them exist elsewhere, too. Perhaps, most of all, rape happens so often in India simply because it is allowed to happen. There is a culture of impunity. After 600 rape cases reported in Delhi last year, only one has led to a conviction.

That's why the current set of sustained protests are something of a silver lining.

People are genuinely upset. The rise of India's middle class has activated a powerful civil society. One that is now demanding better government. It did so a year ago regarding corruption.

Now it's asking for basic rights for women. In a way, this is India's Arab Spring. But it needs to sustain itself and to lead to real reform and change. This Indian spring will only work out better than the Arab Spring if its national leaders recognize the need for radical and thorough change in their country.

It never qualifies to be called as INDIAN ARAB SPRING because, this incident is an isolated one committed by the heinous uncultured ones. India has started to take drastic steps to prevent these incidents in the days to come. Having said that,I would also we have a long way to go and politicians' mindset must changed or they should be thrown out of their positions gradually. All the Arab countries which has had/have protests have one reason in common – Authoritarian regimes which was killing it's own people. In India's case.it's different.

I agree, there is no democracy in India. Some demagogues and the top 0.1% of elite smartly using the word "democracy" to avoid out-side interference. There is no law in the country. People are being exploited thoroughtly. Probably taking the current political layer out may slightly remove some dirt and clear the air !

Indeed women in India do the right thing by demanding better law enforcement and protection. Safety shouldn't be something affordable only to rich daughters and wives, who surround themselves with minders etc. As more and more women in India work and contribute to the economic growth, the state should provide for their safety and respect their integrity.

Sorry Lea, you seem to be ignorant about India. It IS the largest democracy in the world. Unfortunately, there are violent elements everywhere in the world.
Corruption happens everywhere too... if you had any money invested in the markets, the scandal(s) of 2008 would have hurt your portfolio. If not, just to refresh your memory-this was the wall street scandals/housing crash orchestrated by the topp brass of wall street and the banking/insurance industry....

So please dont make ignorant comments... read up and be wise

Mr / Ms Randhawa or what ever you name may be , please do learn to spell right prior to putting up a post on reputed websites,or are you one of those who land directly from Indian Punjab into North American , like thousands of your fellow Hindu / Sikh Punjabi's who do not care to learn a word of English as a token of respect to the vibrant community and economy whose part you seek to be , instead import turban wearing culture wherein it is not sought to spread awareness of same while crying foul at the slightest mistake of the generous host country who allowed you to set foot in North America in quest of economic prosperity ,reminds me of a place called "South hall" in London , UK. I am sorry if i may have offended religious sensibilities.

Come on, don't show your ignorance here. India is a multi-faceted country with great freedom and diversity of cultures co-existing peacefully for decades. The only problem is the muslim of course but then they are a problem all over the world and is nothing new. India has its problems just like other countries and it needs to up its responsibility in many spheres but it is in no way comparable to the muslim dominated countries which are the dustbins of world.

I don't understand how the entire country of India, and all the Indians living in India and abroad are collectively assigned the label of whatever crimes some lunatic(s) have perpetrated. By that standard, there is not a single nation on this planet where there is no evil, and thus, not a single human being, including Americans, Norwegians, and all the folks from the western democratic countries that are not criminals. People, before you lump everyone together in one bucket for the crime of others, just think clearly, and reason it out, whether it makes sense to call every Indian and the entire nation of India, all the bad words.

And finally, to those of you who are here to point out grammatical mistakes made by an Indian writing in English, you all seriously need to get a life. Unless you know everything about everything (there is no such thing btw), you have no right to tell others, especially on a forum like this, to point out mistakes of others.

        JUST CHILL PEOPLE!!!

We Indians rather have a corrupt democracy than an honest dictator. India has always been a democractic, tolerant and non-violent culture. This led to the country being the birthplace o the largest number of faiths than any other spot inthe world and also the most diverse cultural spot too. A little corruption does not really matter to us. We have freedom of speech and religion and that is what matters. I bet many arab countries would give their life and soul to have a piece of our government. But that does not mean that corruption and lack of law is something we can tolerate. Our nation is still young, overpopulated and poor. We need time but the people will change the country.

Most of you don't understand what democracy is, including some people here who think India has been a democracy for 70 years.....sorry to tell you India invented democracy with it's panchayat raj thousands of years ago.

Secondly, I have seen and participated in multiple democracies – Indian and American and chaotic is how democracy is suppsed to be. If you want perfect order visit China or Syria where the government forces you to behave as they want. Democracy is always going to be chaotic but that's the beauty of it – there is value in the chaos as the best (most effective) idea wins. There are bad people -corrupt, rapists, theives, looters everywhere and that is not a problem created by democracy. It's a society issue – once the mindset of people in this culture change things will change – don;t blame democracy or the Indian version of democacy. There is no perfect way to rule unless you want to be ruled by Saddam or Gaddafi.

India is a demography bomb whose roots originate from their cast system. This problem is not the same as 'gun violence' we are witnessing in America, cast system is based on religion. Anything based on religion is difficult to change because religion is based on Dogma.
The artificial ratio between males vs females in India will result into more males' primitive behavior in the society. India's judicial system also being dis-functional does not help to solve the abuse of women its in a way making the problem even worse. To me unless Hinduism undergoes an evolutionary process as it happened to Christianity the problem can be reduced by making India's political parties much more circular than what they are right now.

Personally, I can see ignorance rolling off the words of a lot of the people who have commented on this post. I'd like to point out a few things and hope you are open-minded enough to take a few minutes to consider what I'm writing.
I don't remember who said it, but there is a quote that says "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others." Broken down, it means that a perfect government is impossible and a democracy is in no way perfect but it's the best we can come up with presently. However, this does not mean that people should not try to reform every aspect of their lives, including government.
India in particular has many problems that could contribute to the current situation, including its culture (I don't mean that the Indian culture is a bad culture, but the fact that their traditions cause them to avoid giving birth to girls because of financial issues is a problem), overpopulation, and government. You can't point the finger to only the government or only the people or any other singular factor.
What really caught my eye was the racism towards Arabs and Muslims. This really shows a lot of ignorance. I'd like to point out that most of the Arab's problems are caused by foreign interference. Not all Arabs are Muslims, and Muslims are very much misrepresented in the media.

India still have the Caste system, generations comes and goes working as servants. yes there are improvements but very slow and only a small % of populations benefits from the recent economice boom. I wouldn't call it a Huge Democracy. go ask a regular kashmiri under occupation about how Indian democracy is working for them. Poor Kashmiris are executed, imprisoned. It India was a democratic country, then they will allow kashmiris to hold a referendum for self determination.

this might kick a bit of mud... but hell, Indians can abuse , degrade among themselves. Hierarchy is very deeply routed. There is a Hierarchy where ever there are 2 or more people/groups. Indians managed to divide and subdivide people into as many number of groups as possible.

Then came western culture and questioned the hierarchical system. The people who have enjoyed this age old system are not willing to give up and that is where the root of the problem is. Sadly it is easy to abuse the weak. Indians are masters in showing power on weak, it is a sad truth many do not want to accept. Now many Indians rather than accepting the problems and try fixing them will say Western news papers are exploiting India and showing bad news... See the Hippocratic nature there.. They are willing to mask the problems and deny existence of problems than fixing it. Fixing problem starts with accepting the problem... Sadly most of them are happy pointing fingers. .

India is NOT a democracy, they have not allowed Kashmiris to decide their future besides promising to respect UN decisions, the UN has declared there be a plebiscite in Kashmir, but India refuses.

India is ruled by a majority violent gang of Brahmin thugs, it is a democracy in name only.

Disregarding the posters semantics, he does have a valid point however. Whilst India's civil society seems to be awakening to the injustices that abound them, our society seems to be in a deep somnolence. I am willing to bet that despite our recent spate of horrific mass shooting of kids and invalids, high unemployment rate and fiscal bankruptcy, nothing will really change in our nations legal & political framework. Look at what the Canadians, Europeans, Australians et all have to say about us – we are in serious denial & it's not pretty.

There is no dictator or establishment that can withstand the mighty power of a free floating zeros and ones!!! Don't fool yourself into thinking that ANY modern government (including our own) can't "pull the plug" in a heartbeat at any given moment. The so-called "progressives" in this country have been quietly setting up that scenario for a decade now in the silly transparent guise of "internet equality". The right wing is doing the same through silly transparent guise of "increasing security". Representatives of both extremes are (of course) completely full of s$%t, but that doesn't change the fact that they're winning.

Arab spring quickly turned into Arab radicalism and theocratic rulers instead of dictatorships. It is just being replaced by even more oppressive regime, with even less allowance for minorities, gays, women rights. Until Islam is fixed and neutred, muslim countries are going to go through dictatorship or theocratic cycles. While you are correct about the caste system, on the other hand, the government has taken measures for a while in the form of "affirmative action" for the historically "lower caste" people in areas such as academic opportunity. The situation on the ground varies depending on which part of India you are talking about. Not a problem among middle to upper class, educated Indians. However, I stopped accusing developing countries with high rates of illiteracy and abject poverty "backwards" when I found out that here in our "first world" good ole' USA, about half of the population still thinks a god created the world in 7 days, and many consider global climate change and evolution and science in general are all a hoax.

India now is too free democratic that the Islamic militants can bomb religious places, lower caste people can join Govt and politics without any qualification and can rule, vote bank politicians can occupy public offices, morality and bad karma roaming on streets. Hindu culture is hiding in woods but democracy is corrupt to core.

Yes, we have lots of problems in India including corrupt and ineffective police force, corrupt government and so on. But it is we the people who let it happen because we tolerate these things. Unfortunately we Indians try to break or find a way around every single law in our day-to-day life. Unless we the people improve our behavior, start respecting and obeying laws regardless of what others do, this situation will only continue. When we change, our government, our police force and our society will change for the better.

That means the comparison is not supposed to be taken literally.. just like the Arab spring was a turning point in national politics fueled at the grass-root level by people who had had enough, this we hope is a turning point where civilians demand and get better government, dependable police forces, and safety for women. This is exactly the analogy I would have used, so I think Fareed is right on the money. Look at the bigger point he is making!

The author of this article is addressing other problems in India. It is misleading. Women india legally have equal rights. Men in authority in India still have the mentality that men are superior in the society. This is due lack of understanding of women's biology over the centuries. Unfortunately, some of the abilities of women for example being able to give birth, the processes women's body goes through in preparation of that are viewed as a weaknesses rather than strengths. The youth are trying to communicate issues via protests expressing their anger.

To Kashyap,,,, I think you are only trying to defend India's corrupt democracy rather than be honest about the harsh realities the average indians are living daily. You missed the point of the article. The reference to "Arab Spring" here is only symbolic and not necessarily to draw similarties. The idea behind "Arab Spring" is that it brought a change and therefore it should be applied to what's happening in India. Indian culture treats women terribly. This is never highlighted enough in American and Western media; they only show the untrue face of India so called "Democracy". India is neither Democratic nor Free. When women are treated harshly and unfairly in a society, this society is neither free or democratic. Democracy is supposed to bring prosperity to the people. In India most of the population is poor and suffering... Society is divided into classes. When a society is composed of classes, there is no democracy.

I'm a fan of Zakaria, but I think we should resist making the term "Arab spring" too malleable. The actions associated with that moment were revolutions, not in a symbolic sense, but in fact. The Arab spring involved arms, death and overthrow. India is a stable democracy, where such is unlikely. A social revolution is not the same thing. Zakaria, a native, knows this but mustn't assume that most Americans do. They will come away with the wrong idea of what is happening there. Similarly, the U.S., like India, has a "broken" government. Sweeping social change may happen to correct that - but it wouldn't be an "Arab spring."

Well said, this is the most sensible comment here. India is going through something akin to the Civil rights movement of the 60s & 70s. I must point out however, that there are many urban Indian families that value and respect women, I wouldn't make very sweeping generalizations in a country of 1.2B people. Of course rural India still has ways to go in terms of gender equality, looks like the ball has been set rolling.

Krishna, I'm an Indian immigrant inventor in US and I find your comment disgusting. What has America given the world? Electricity, airplanes, IPhones, silicon, just to name a few basic things. A vast majority of these groundbreaking inventions were not made by immigrants. And you gotta give America credit that is the only country in the world that has the vision and guts to let foreign inventors in and advance their economy.

Dave, read up. It doesn't take much to find truth now a days, e.g. google.

Here are some, the decimal number system you learned was cooked up in India, many of the mathematical theories were invented in india (Europeans and Arabs copied many of them and stamped their names)

Yes, I agree with you on one thing that after the 1000 years of slavery under Muslims and Christian Colonists, India did lose it's immense wisdom. But as the 1000 year slavery didn't eliminate their values, I am pretty sure they would bounce back sooner or later.

Zakaria is completely off his game on this one. Arab Spring is a genuine, POLITICAL upheaval long overdue in the Arab world to overthrow their puppet dictators. Glad it happened.
To confuse that with an outrage and protest by rising middle-class Indians over the delay and lethargy to deliver switft justice by the Indian government bureacracy (due to an over-burdened Indian court systems with 12 million civil and criminal cases pending in all its courts), is to trivialize and belittle the Arab Spring. Sure it pays well to fill in the 24/7 news on CNN because you were born in India. But in the spirit of journalistic integrity, falls way short.

How about a few.....Math – The decimal number system, Medicine – Surgery, Ayurveda and Siddha, Well-being – Yoga, Advances in Astronomy, City planning – Harappa and Mohenjadaro etc..
Your entire 'western world' is standing on the shoulders of those early achievements that was passed on to the west via the middle-east.
India, an inherently secular culture due to Hinduism and it had gladly welcomed and allowed all other religions (including your Middle-Eastern desert cults) to prosper unlike any other country over millenniums. In turn what it got in return? It was taken advantage of and came under foreign occupation by the 11th century first to the Muslims and then to the British in the 16th century as a colony who looted and r -aped the country for its resources and made its society to undergo devastating social, political and economic degradation which it still suffers from and mocked at.

If you have the courage to burst out of the massive bubble created by the vicious Christian missionary activities and the power of British government propaganda since 1857 (first Indian soldiers mutiny against British rule) which forms the bedrock of all western false notions towards India, who knows you might finally 'learn' some 'truth'.

Being that Fareed Zakriah was born in India and educated at Harvard, I'm assuming he's well aware that Indians and Arabs are not the same people. Referring to an Arab spring is the pretext that a sensational personal tragedy caught major media attention and led to massive protests and demonstrations against a social injustice. In India's case, it's against a legal system and aspects of the culture that allow these types of attacks to take place. It's not the same case as in Tunisia or Egypt, but one can draw a comparison.

Author is failed to recognize that INDIAN protest are not Arab spring. In Arab spring, they are fighting for freedom, IN INDIA people have DEMOCRACY(TOO MUCH OF IT..) and it is not accountable. The main reason is 30 to 40% voters never vote(almost all of them are highly educated) and other 60 % votes(mostly uneducated people, vote for good talk or one million negative reasons like caste, religion, group or flat out sell their vote for money ) has been split by at least 5 parties. So if anybody manages to get 30% votes, they are getting elected to rule the state. Politicians are clearly driven by these numbers, that’s why they are always divide people on emotional issues and try to get mileage then real governance. It will be changing but it may take at least one generation from now..

I am not surprised about female infanticide. Why should any sane family decide tobring a daughter into a society that treats their women so badly. What confidence do they have their offspring will be treated worser than a pet dog? We need to improve security for women and give them their due place in society on equal par with men. Only then can we fight female infanticide.

India has never been under dictators like Hosni Mubarak or Muammer Qaddafi, except for a short 3 year period under Indira Gandhi's emergency rule – but even then, it was not comparable to what has been the history of Arab World. To compare a Democracy like India with Arab dictators is stupid at best and outrageous at worst, and I am a fan of the guy.
Indian Govt and Police are corrupt, yes, but what is happening in India is what happens in a democracy. People are protesting to force the govt. into action on a specific issue. They are not rioting to gain political freedom Mr Zakaria. There is huge difference between Arab spring (remains to be seen how far it goes and what is the end result). Indian Govt. is not firing live ammunition on its citizens. Not yet anyway, so please save the comparison for a little bit longer.

Fareed Zakaria is a Muslim first and foremost..... May be at the 100th position a former Indian.
Any chance he can get to try and equate the sorry state of the Muslim/Arab world and the degraded treatment of its women to other cultures, he will jump at the chance regardless of its relevance.
Without any shame or understanding of Indian society or social status and with one sweeping comment he claims that ALL Indian women are servants (just now on TV). May be in his Muslim household his mother was treated as such. That could be the reason he fled to the US.
If only my mother or grandmother or any women in our household heard of his comments they would cut his nuts off.
These are times where you can see the true color of people in full display on where their allegiance lies. These are true snakes in disguise.

The problem isn't the right wing as any right wing system would have severly brought the hammer down on this kind of crime, but rather the Shiria system where crimes by men and women are judged unequally and crimes by men against women are not judged at all. America doesn't have a right wing punishment system as it takes can take years to prosecute someone and then they are placed in an insitution of free housing and food.

Well .. Fareed is totally off with the topic this time. India is the best showcase of democracy in the world. Hosts more Muslims that Pakistan (maybe .. not sure), states of India are so varied that I myself sometimes feel alien. Still it holds extremely well as a single country and elect leaders by elections bottoms up. With only ~60 yrs of independence what I think India is going through is a "social evolution". Guess it will take few more decades to settle down ....

The difference between this and the "arab springs" has to do with the fact that Indians do not need to force out their government, just vote them out. This would take a much higher level of political awareness and discontent.

Fareed -You being a Muslim can only think about sharia, terrorism and arab spring and paint india in those terms. Shame on you. Can you show me at least 3% Hindu Indians of more than 80% Hindus of india want to subvert democracy and bring in another system? Except muslims, all (Hindus, Christians, sikhs etc) are for secular democratic India. What we are fighting for in India is not arab spring, it is for reforms in police, judiciary, anti-corruption law, election reforms, governance reforms also political reforms. This is obvious and natural demand as people expectations are high. This is natural evolution as India progresses as rise of middle class and educated class rise.

Ben: Define democracy. What India has are corrupt politicians and Bureaucrats. Do you know what percent of indian members of parliament (MPs) have murder, assaults and corrution charges against them? Their cases will never be heard in courts and if they are, they will be acquitted. No justice will ever be done to their victims. Their children will grow up to take their fathers place in politics and the cycle will continue. Is this your definition of democracy?

Anybody ever seen Fareed in a debate match in front of an audience? You can see him in CSPAN's archives filed under Iran Nuclear Bomb. Fareed is insolent, interrupting his opponents not just repeatedly but running on continuously, even though they are polite to him and afford him time to talk. I didn't agree with either side in the debate. But all Fareed's got is talking over his adversaries. He's got nothing else. He brought no tested research to the debate. He's a charlatan. To talk about "India's Arab Spring" in today's article is a slap to Arabs, Muslims, India (A DEMOCRACY FOR OVER 60 YEARS), and the very concept of civil electoral process which was dearly purchased by India's citizens at its founding. Maybe he insults the season of Spring too, he puts forth such an insipid idea. Yes, India has a lot of problems with violence and so does the U.S. But both countries have the electoral structure to make concrete and lasting changes.

India IS a democracy. But India does need a social revolution to irradicate all aspects of social injustice and corruption at all levels of governments. The current political system simply ignores the poor and the downtrodden and stomps on them. Majority of the well off and the yuppis, are quite happy with their lavish lives and have learnt to live with the corruption. It is not an Arab Spring, but a healthy sign that a social movement/uprising is coming.

Fareed, I often watch your excellent programs on CNN and respect your opinions, but do not agree with you about India's "Arab Spring". Only about 25 to 30 percent, if at all, of the Indian population lives in urban areas and the rest of the people reside in rural areas. The last time when any big change came to India was when Mahatma Gandhi mobilized the entire population (urban and rural) to drive out the British. I migrated to India around 1966 and often heard about the corrupt politicians, government officers, bad infra structure and so on. It is 2013, after almost 50 years, I still hear the same complaints. To bring change in India one has to mobilize more than 70 percent or so of the population, but I think people who would like to do so end up struggling because everyone has his or her own axe to grind. Besides, communication is still an issue in India – less than 15 percent of the total population has access to the internet, Facebook or Twitter and those who do understand the use of this form of communication live in urban areas. In general, people in India are too tolerant. I can go on, but do I need to say any more?

I really don't understand CNN's fascination with labeling this a "India's Arab Spring", the Arab spring was meant to overthrow authoritative regimes. These are peaceful protests demanding better rights and protection for women, fight against corruption etc. Being a very open democratic country, Indians have always held the right to protest on any particular incident if they feel it was handled wrongly. Go look up any Indian media site, they are projecting this current protest as one that will finally wake up the Government regarding women issues in the country and all protests have largely been peaceful. The term "Arab Spring" is really inappropriate in this situation.

May i note that usually public outbursts in form of continuous protests usually are "aided" by funding from Organizations which are fronts for political parties , because the common man has a job to go to every day or a lecture at the university , and if scores of people turn up continuously – that is uncommon . I am apolitical however unfortunately the opposition party BJP and its fascist allies who dupe people in name of communal agenda are the only one with money and muscle power to "morally aid and abet" such "socially enlightened" protests. No doubt the crime in question was indeed horrific however the response was not commensurate. I am sorry if i may have toed a line which may have hurt peoples political or religious sentiments but in an Emerging economy with a social structure like India – no one leaves his job or lecture to head out day after day on the streets – The public bonding isnt that strong – as the populace is strongly divided on lines of relegion , caste , gotra , social status etc , so next time you see mass protests you may be right to imagine a fertile source of funding via non social actors.

Yes, India is a big country and yes they have democracy. But to what extent?

    1) India has democracy but they created this cast system... Untoucheble class – they are discriminated every single day... – is this demorcracy?
    2) Rich are the poor people left right center – is this demorcracy?
    3) Women are burned to live by her in-laws because of the dowry – is this democracy?
    4) Girl baby get killed even before she comes to this world – because she is a girl – is this demorcracy?

I must say that most of the items that you have listed are true. India being a huge society, does suffer from pressing social issues. But again they are SOCIAL issues, not political issues. Democracy is a political system, not a social system!!

"No basic toilet system for over 60% of indians but they are sending to Mars." Do you really think India should not developing space program till rest of social, political and infrastructure issues are resolved? Indian being a $1.8 trillion economy only spends only $1.2 Billion on space program

I CAN NOT EXPLAIN the smell – and CAN NOT EXPLAIN the view – People are toiletting all over the place – along the train ride – people do not care you are in the train – They are just squatting... and do their things...

You see, does not matter how much money you bring by exports – If you can not support your own people with basic necessities, it does not make sense.

Space can wait – but people dying of malnutrition and bad water can not...

People are absolutely free to point out all the problems in India ... of course we need change and people need to improve .. but the term ARAB SPRING undoubtedly refers to change from dictatorship to democracy .. Hence, use of this term is completely inappropriate in the context of recent rallies in India ..

I would categorize the recent violent events in India more of an “Indian Implosion” rather than anything else. This repulsive practice of bashing up women is deeply ingrained in Hindu psyche/culture and has been ongoing for centuries. The sad part is that they have been getting away with it. Why the human rights organizations kept quiet for so long and why the women’s organizations looked the other way is incomprehensible and atrocious at the same time!! Needless to say, it became difficult to keep the genie bottled up any longer. The reason that the media decided to air this out at this time is, in my opinion, tied to the shifting sands in Washington as to the future direction of American foreign policy post Afghanistan. And that does not bode well for India as the outstretched begging bowl dries up, if you will. The future lies in USA and China moving together as partners thus reducing global tension, achieving economies of scale and intellect.

At best, India is a bully and a trouble maker in that region. It has kept the neighbors behind due constant bickering. India has always lived in the shadow of Pakistan and has been forever defined by Pakistan. Blaming Pakistan for all the ills in Indian society. Let's face it; India is a decadent culture and economy on the verge of collapse. India has become a dinosaur. A specimen best displayed in the Tower of London. The victims lay by the side of the road for nearly half an hour and many vehicles and people passed by and saw them but none stopped to help. These are the same people that later went and protested and lit candles and did prayer vigils and got into violent confrontations with the police. Let a couple of years pass and put these same people in the exact same situation where they see a couple of victims naked and bloodied and laying by the side of the road and guess what, they will just pass on by. Something very, very fundamental needs to change. Or else it is back to the same.

For God's sake, India doesn't need a "Arab Spring". What has Arab Spring achieved for Women of those parts?? Even the state's very own existence has become fragile there and medievel ideologies are taking root.

Atleast Indian state has done plenty of things for women in past (atleast on the paper) despite pressure from conservative parts of the country – equal rights, 50% reservation in local bodies, anti dowry legislations and so on for example. One must face the facts- In a poor traditional society, executing social reforms is extremely difficult and lengthy process. What we need is peaceful social revolution at the grassroots, in our villages/small towns/slums/poor illiterate neighborhood/conservative parts of middle class and not do anything to wreck the very state in one of the most volatile parts of the world. Life could become far worse for the women and men. So let's just stop playing this revolution-revolution thing and get back to honestly executing what's already there on the paper.

India isn't really a democracy. Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Canada, Finland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Austria, Germany, Malta, Czech Republic, Uruguay, the UK. Those are all of the countries that have a higher Democracy Index value (a measure of civil liberties, effectiveness of government and political participation) higher than that of the US. To name the countries that scored higher than India, I would have to list some 20 other countries, including the US, Israel, Botswana, Estonia, Costa Rica and South Africa.

There may be a facade of democracy there, but they have a long way to go, and to call them the world's best / biggest democracy is just plain wrong.

Democracy: A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. In India elections are held every year and the people vote for representatives in order to carry out what they want. It is certainly not the best democracy, but there is no denying it is the biggest.

But in the spirit of journalistic integrity, falls way short of target.

This r- ape case is a very rare vicious assault on a woman by a group of illiterate slum dwellers (migrants from State of Bihar) on a late-night binge-drinking spree in a deserted area inside a private chartered bus (the western media never mentions this once) committed that heinous crime.
How many Indians can truly recall a r -ape followed by such a gruesome, life-threatening attack in their lifetimes in India? My best educated guess is there was some verbal altercation that would have taken place between the woman and the drunken low-lifes which quickly escalated to a life-threatening assault with a weapon in the drunken mental state that those men were in. Again those reasons and context will never be investigated. Good for the media filled these days by female journalists who will jump and typecast a billion people no matter the context.

The Indian people who are protesting took this opportunity to highlight the delays and lethargy in the over-burdened Indian court system (12 million civil and criminal cases pending) for speedy justice.
The western media is having a field day as usual to blow it out of proportion due to the magnitude of the protest which in reality is mainly targeted towards the enormous slow-moving Indian government bureaucracy in this chaotic worlds largest democracy.

I dont think it is a question of a lack of democracy or lack of laws as such. India, on paper has enough laws, however they are outdated and need to be updated in keeping with what is happening in the nation. However, the bigger problem that needs to be addressed is the cultural thinking. The statements given by politicians, religious leaders (well, one for now) makes one wonder whether there is an inherent thought process that women are subservient to men. The whole thought process that women should dress in a particular manner to 'avoid' unnecessary advances by men, should not be out after a certain time to avoid being 'labeled' as one without morals, etc is nothing but an example of how men think in India.

And it is not just men, it is women as well who share the thinking. It shows that no matter what, the thinking that boys will be boys and girls/women need to be the one who should lower the gaze and stay away from places is the one that is also promoted by women of the house , be it a mother, a grand mother etc. Every household has possibly a mother, a daughter/sister, a wife/aunt, a grand mother – then how come we are condoning the acts and not just condoning take pride in showcasing the progress done by a male child and suppressing the girl child.

Unless the cultural thinking shifts, there is little to no chance of a substantial change or an 'uprising' happening in India. The insensitivity of those who left the victim and her friend bleeding and pleading for help is something to be questioned as well.

It is said that a 'auto-rickshaw' driver refused to ply the victim (before the incident). That is another story altogether – the high handed behavior of auto-rickshaw drivers and taxi drivers across the country mostly who decide if they will take the passenger or not. I am sure the auto-rickshaw driver will have to live the rest of his life thinking what if.

We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. Terrorism is rampant in the region in part financed by Indians. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts. It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population.

Why not? Arab invaders to India travelled with African slaves in ancient times. Hindus are an offshoot of the illegitimate children born out of these african slaves. The dark skin and body odor of Indians today are indicative of the DNA of these slaves. Nothing personal...it is all science.

We remain extremely appalled and highly concerned about the continued medieval cultural and barbaric social practices prevalent in the name of Hinduism in India. Much to our chagrin, the human rights organizations are either turning a blind eye towards these injustices or are being paid off to look the other way. We are particularly aware of the victims of such practices, namely, young children and women especially those women who are pregnant and are bearing a female embryo. They are being mistreated or simply sacrificed in the name of their deities. To the civilized world such atrocious behavior is repulsive and is condemned in the strongest words. We urge the Indian Hindus to immediately cease and desist from such unacceptable norms. To them we say the world is watching and will see to it that justice prevails.

The arguing over the term 'democratic' here is ridiculous. There is a mix up – India is indeed a democratic country with all the attributes. Corruption there is on the line with corruption in the most of Asian developing countries. However, the Indian society is NOT democratic. India is a very old civilization that had most of its history very un-democratic and/or tradition-based rule, especially on a local level. Ask any Indian coming from a small village. This lack of inner democracy, self-respect and respect to women in people and in society is the reason of what has happened.

In 2013 we will need to focus on India and its irrelevance as a nation. With a population of over 1.5 billion people there is no value that this nation brings to the table and has become a burden on world conscience and resources. India has lost its bearing and its soul. From brutal gang r-apes, genocide in Kashmir, ethnic cleansing of Sikhs to financing and sponsoring terrorists it is far too big to succeed. It is too huge to govern. It is too bloated to be fixed and is on life support systems in Singapore. Some may sense it now and some may have to look in the rear view mirror to figure it out. India needs to be taken out of its pain and there is only one way.....subdivide it into independent nations that are economically viable and along ethnic lines. In the words of Mies Van Der Rohe, “LESS IS MORE”. How so true!!

Nirbhaya, the daughter of India has become the symbol of years and years of victimization of women in India. I don’t think Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and countless other freedom fighters fought for this state of Bharat MA.
Women are being victimized at every stage of their life. Everyone is well aware of abortion of female fetus. Even though there is ban against sonogram since there is no basic for the law and the thought of the girl as a burden on the family the abortions are still widespread. They are being victimized at later stages of their lives by withholding their education, inheritances and even health. The Indian women sometimes are not even given decent end of life options. The female soul deserves equal love, equal respect and equal rights in health, inheritance and education. It should be tracked and reported.
In my humble opinion there are two faces to the problem. On one side she has next to no support at home to thrive (maybe some families do but it Is next to nothing in a population of a billion) and on the other side when she steps out of the home the law is not held up to support her rights.
Our country’s leadership has become an item number. They are a shame. We need to revamp law and order. We need to throw every so called leader into jail who has even been suspected of broken the law of any kind.
    We need a revolution.
We need a revolution in every woman, man and child of Indian origin to bring back Mahaan Bharat by bringing back the respect for Bharat MA.
    Call for a revolution on 26th January 2013 – 30th January 2013

L, Fareed is briliant isn't he. I made friends with a large extended Indian family-sect here in the US. They still practice arranged marriage via a "match maker". But the folks were not forced to do so (it was up to them). Also the women were not sublect to discrimatory deviation from the men (as far as I saw). In fact the "leader" of this family was a matriarch and was a Registered Nurse that supervised an entire small hopital. East Indian people are the most gentle folks and culture I have met here in the US.

It's not an Arab Spring for several reasons:
    1. NOT SPRING!
    2. NOT ARAB!
    3. Not the overthrow of a totalitarian regime

What is happening in India is a call for social and gender equality and a cultural change in how women are viewed and treated.

Its as obnoxious as every kinda scandal getting "gate" added to the end.

What right does India, a country of 1.5 "BILLION" people, have to exist when it cant even treat its injured in local hospitals? Is this the civilization that has existed for thousands of years? Is this the same country that was touted as superpower just a few weeks ago? Is this the economic powerhouse that was the panacea to all the problems in the world. Well, I am afraid that right now this country is nothing more than a hair across a donkeys @ss. Its people the butt of jokes across the world. Its culture a medieval and primitive manifestation of cult like rituals inherited from African tribes. India is like a tubeless tyre with a flat that cannot be repaired. A deflated prune.

It's about time that India has done something like this in regards to protests. But citizens of India have got to get the politicians out to make India a better place to live. Not until then will India ever be a great country that it could be. Remove you corrupt politicians and India could flourish!

Highest abortion of female babies is due to the Social security system in India.

First born son is an asset, the 401k account. Educate him and he will take care of you.(At least they believe ).
Even the royal blood of England is based on the first born son theory till today.

Girls are viewed as liability . you have to provide security and keep her safe. Whatever investment like education will not be helpful for the parents when they grow old.On top of it, dowry issue..

When Govt implements Social Security and creates infrastructure for old people live on their own and speeds up the judiciary system, women will be safer in India. I see that happening in year AD 3013

I love how people are complaining that Fareed Zakaria is being too harsh. If this were a Muslim majority country (it has the world's second highest Muslim population, but not majority) or an Arab country, Zakaria would've been lauded for saying what he did. However, the reality is that India is one of the top 5 worst countries to be a woman.

It was no Spring. More like a regression or winter. The countries have switched to more repressive regimes more intolerant of minorities and more backward then ever before.

There are no Arabs in India, nothing there has anything to do with the Newton school shooting, Americans are not soul-searching about women's rights in India because it's none of our business! Geez. I think the Arab Spring analogy just refers to the rising political/social awareness amongst the masses, that up until the last decade was completely disengaged from the political process. The analogy does not equate the amount of political freedom in India to that in the Middle East. For those of you claiming that Fareed Zakaria is anti-India (since he is a Muslim or otherwise), Zakaria is one of the most pro-India international journalists. If you do not believe me go check out the video him interviewing (and sometimes heckling) Pervez Musharraf.

I agree. Mr Zakaria takes great pride of his Indian heritage. But it is not that Mr. Zakaria is a pro-india journalist, he is a true hard core journalist and asks the right questions. In my opinion just because someone is speaking out against the Govt. of India or asking tough questions of it, would not make him anti-India just as if someone is not asking hard questions of the Govt. where it should be asked, would not make him pro-India. I think all Govts. are answerable to its people no matter where they are. If Mr. Zakaria were to ask tough questions of Indian Govt. will certainly not mean that he does not pride in his Indian heritage, which most definitely does.

In the end us women will be forced to wear burqas like Muslims. We are not better than the middle Easters. How can our country praise women in Hinduism, yet hurt them so much.

Definitely not an indian arab spring. We are not fighting for freedom or liberty both of which we have had for millennia (except briefly when we were ruled by the british). Our democracy (inspite of all its corruption and nepotism) is still better than many so called democracies that the US has helped develop in the middle east and in Pakistan(if you can call that a democracy). Hence not an Arab Spring.. but perhaps an awakening of the soul and rewriting our moral codes on which our society needs to develop further on. So in that respect, we can call it a Male awakening.

Who are we kidding! India is no democracy. All these years after independence, we are still ruled by the one family. With over a billion citizens, dont we have a single capable person other than Rahul Gandhi who can lead our country out of corruption and poverty in the new century?
We are better than a lot of countries , true! But do we want to compare ourselves to the likes of Pakistan? I think not. I look forward to the day we become a true and mature democracy. I look forward to a day when Manmohan Singh can do his job without being a hand puppet of Sonia Gandhi!
