Argo picked up the Best Picture Oscar last night, but did the operation to rescue six Americans trapped in Iran go just like it did in the movie? Fareed spoke with the mastermind behind the plan, former CIA officer Antonio Mendez, just before the movie was released.
Watch the video for Mendez’s take on what happened.
Antonio Mendez... What a phoney! He was in Tehran for a day and a half. The only heros here were the Canadian Diplomatic staff and especially Ken Taylor.
You are wrong! Mr. Mendez was risking his life every minute he was in Iran and had to make the infiltration when all aspects of his plan were cleared and ready to go. If the Iranians learned of his plan he would have been shot or hung on site. It takes courage to pull off something as dangerous as this and Mr. Mendez deserves all the praise he is getting. Yes it was a team effort and they could not have done it without the help of the Canadians, especially Mr. Ken Taylor who housed the hostages and risked his own life and those on his staff but to say Mr. Mendez is a PHONY is insulting and downright mean spirited.
Team effort? Based on this particular movie, could have fooled me. Seems Mendez and the Americans were the only heroes, which is equally wrong. Read up on what the actual hostages have had to say as well as then President Jimmy Carter. This movie did NOT do justice to the courage and heroics of the Canadians that did far more to risk their lives as well as intelligently bringing the plan to free the hostages into fruition... that should have been more of the focal point... but it's an American film geared to a US audience, so it is what it is.... The irony is that it premiered in Toronto.
talking argo, talking propaganda and deception
talking zero dark 30, talking propaganda and deception
talking lincoln, talking propaganda and deception
talking hollywood and tv, talking propaganda and deception
Mendez might have fallen into oblivion, had it not been this film "Argo". How many Iranians today still remember the Islamic Revolution?
tpotallu hyped movie . its good but not great . Silver linings Playbook much better!
Here goes Hollywood trying to glorify the cursed C.I.A. and bash the Iranians at the same time. Is Hollywood really crawling that much with right-wing fanatics or is it under the pay of the neocons in Washington D.C.? Probably both!
I'm surprised Fareed dismisses the Canadian roll so readily in this show. Canada hid the Americans, provided them with Canadian passports and background names and stories, were the ones who contacted the US about what was going on and worked with the Americans throughout the whole crisis to facilitate a positive outcome all while putting their consulate members at risk. Ask the 6 Americans and president Carter about Canada's roll! Valid though the CIA operative's role was it was just one cog in the wheel that made this happen not the only story. PBS Detroit aired a program this weekend that showed the 'whole story' about what happened. The whole event and everyone involved in it should be commended. It is regretful that perhaps the most essential component appears to have been dismissed both in the movie, by the CIA agent and Fareed.
Right on !
When one is sick, the whole lot is hard. From eating to sleeping, the illness actually affects the overall perform of the person. However since these two, particularly sleeping is a must, one ought to consider methods to get higher sleep even if he or she is sick. mac repairs http://mac-win.co.uk
Loved the movie
The NZ Politicians Peters, Keys and past and present MFAT staff think they been rather unfairly situated as the Chileans say in the opening sequence to the film. In reality the NZ foreign affairs department puts trade first and its support for the US has been largely rheoric since the 1960's. NZ sent 500 men to Vietnam and the proposals to send the Canberra's (Martin) and RNZN frigates to support the US were blocked in a tense divided Cabinet. Many in the opposition thought the Kirk Govt MFATs adviser Frank Corner was committing tretchery in 1972 in his indepedent initiatives and opposition to Linebacker. Corner thought military support for the US didn't deliver trade dividends. MFAT has relationships with NZs Law, Politics and History schools the major requirement is to master the NZ Policy of even handness on the Israel-Palestine question. I had contempt for the Palestinian cause and that is factor in the 2/2 in Politics and 3rd class in History I recieved. In 1984 as now my position was opposition to nuclear power but recognition tactical and strategic nuclear weapons, MFAT incompetence on the issue was the main source of the trouble- they would not accept that all US and UK warships were nuclear capable and that all classes of frigates and destroyers sometines carried nuclear weapons. Warships of the type used by the RNZN at the time old Rothesays and Leanders were only useful to the RN because they were nuclear capable as an indivisible part of the West's nuclear deterrent.
