Iran's U.N. envoy: We welcome direct talks with U.S.

Watch the full interview on "Fareed Zakaria GPS," this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

Fareed sits down for a rare and exclusive interview with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammad Khazaee, who discusses whether Tehran is open to direct discussions over its nuclear program.

"The clear message of Iran is that if we see that the United States is serious and is honest about its proposal for negotiations, cooperation, direct talks with the Iranians, Iranians will accept it and we will welcome it, definitely.

"There is no doubt about that. I can confirm it here with you and also for your distinguished audience, that Iran welcomes the negotiation and direct talks with the United States, provided that we make sure that the U.S. is serious and does not act differently."

If at all America is afraid of a country, either to talk or even attack, it is none other then Iran. That is the reason why every word emanating from Iran gets hard burnt into the minds of the Americans. America clearly knows it sees its downfall and disintegration if it engages into confrontation with the country. Very similar to what the Romans got from the Parthians in history.

The Jewish state has ICBM nukes and openly threatens Iran, actually campaigns for war against Iran. Israel, not Iran, is the warmonger. Resolution lies with lifting all sanctions and compensating Iran for damages from the $$$ billions we will no longer be giving the Jewish state. An Iran with nukes would disrupt the Jewish state's brutish pursuit of invulnerability, territorial conquest and apartheid empire. Mutually assured destruction might actually make Mideast peace possible.

To be fair, Israel has still conquered a much smaller area then America, the Muslims, China or anyone else. I don't think the rest of the planet has the right to tell a very small country they can't conquer something when everyone else did worse.

The most prudent act for the Middle East would be to accept withdraw all US trips. Impose a UN weapons embargo on the whole area. Have an agreement with the Russians and Chinese that no one interferes over there.

Then just let nature run its course. If Iran is actually foolish enough to try and corner Isreal the Middle East will get nuked. But ya know what? It's the Arabs/Muslims choice and mistake.

The United States shouldn't have to spend trillions and fight decade long wars in some naive quest to bring Em all Democracy. It won't work, because what Arabs want is much different than what America wants.

Iran's ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khazaee spoke on behalf of his government. The leadership in Tehran still dwells on the foregone revolution of 1979. Yes, religious leaders hated the US, that supported the Shah and hate the US for – together with Israel – opposing strongly to Iran's ambition of going nuclear. Somehow the US and Iran know that they have to find a way to come to give belligerent rhetoric without losing face.

    'Eyes wide open'
I hope the U.S. and Iran can avoid the coming War.
The U.S. should take Iran at it's word, which is that they are not developing nuclear weapons
    or weapons of mass destruction.
And following this, all sanction related to this matter should be lifted. And the pain
to the average Iranian should be erased.
And in conjunction, it should be made extremely clear that if Iran does break it's word and develop
such weapons, then that act will be an act of War against the U.S.
Very simple! No ambiguity! There is nothing to negotiate! What else have we been
talking about for years, but that!
And that is where the Congress of the U.S. can play a role, by passing a law that
states that position with the utmost clarity.
Once the law is in place, then both sides will know where the red-line actually is.
If the two sides are going to end up in a War at least both sides will go in to it with eyes wide open.

Fareed is one of the few people who understands that diplomacy starts with talking to people. I enjoyed the interview and it made me hopeful. I agree with what the Iranian representative said about Joe Biden. Let's not let the Republicans make us think that we always have to be threatening other nations. We don't need another war with anyone. "Give peace a chance."

    March 3, 2013 at 11:37 am | Reply
    • David W. Johnson

I agree 100% with your feeling about this matter. First about Fareed (one of the very best thinkers) and second
about peace, but it is does change the reality that Iran is a terrorist nation,
and has made it very clear that given an opportunity it would attack Israel
and the 'great Satan'. (that would be us, with implied nuclear weapons that will come to exist!)
What happens then? Millions of people in both countries would die.
Millions dying for for what ? For nothing really! Iranian ego.
As things are going, the very real prospect of a War with Iran is coming.
Is it not better to make it clear what our terms are and in the mean time not punish
the Iranian people with sanctions, that have no effect on the government of Iran anyway.
And if we must go to War, I want the Congress of the U.S. to make that decision,
and not the President. And if as a nation, we are not prepared to follow up with our threat, then
we should not be making it in the first place. 'Do not aim a gun, if you are not prepared to use it'.
      Why? Because accidents do happen!
Finally, we ought to trust the Iranians that they are not building a nuclear weapon, and
until they do build such a weapon leave them alone, as long as it is clear what the stakes are.

Mr. Zakaria, Why not ask the Ambassador about the direct threat to wipe another country - Israel - off the face of the earth? This threat includes a desire to kill every Jew in the world too, by the way. The fact the world stood by when this threat was made at the U.N, is at the heart of the matter, not the 1979 kidnapping despite the Oscar winning movie - good or bad as it may be.

Iran should make its abandonment of nuclear weapons development contingent on Israel's nuclear disarmament. After all, it was Israel, aided by the US, that began the nuclear arms race in the Middle East. The US' continuing to support Israel against Iran is hypocritical, irrational, immoral, and counter to our national interest. It is only Jewish parasitism of the US government (specifically the State Department) that explains our foreign policy there.

Most recognized terrorist regime in the world? Are you talking about Iran or what? Are you saying this because you heard so or you have a couple of examples of them terrorizing? If you do please let me know since I don't know of any Iranian terrorists. Just for your information, none of the members of AlQaeda were Iranian nor was Iran their supporter. In fact AlQaeda is one of the greatest enemies of Iran too.

I'm not sure why you care about the middle east so much. If you're from US, don't worry, US will be in peace. All of these issues are going on in the middle east. Let the poor middle easterns take care of their own business.

FYI, don't worry about Iran invading another country as they haven't done so in the last 200 years. Can you say so about Israel or US?

Would if you could man. What am I supposed to make of those flag burnings everyday? Or good old, "Death to America/Israel?" Or the famous wipe Israel off the face of the earth statement?

Somehow I don't believe all these tensions in the last decade were over a mistranslation of your presidents speech either. Heard that one before as well.

No to war. Iran can be contained. Iran has a population of 80 million people. America was defeated in Iraq, a country of 29 million people. We need many governments to change. Never forget Saudi Arabia is a theocracy, Indonesia is a dictatorship and Sudan is a dictatorship and we have full relations with them. War is only death, destruction, disease, horror, hunger, and misery. Let all politicians pledge their children to fight in all future wars.

Iran's ambassador says that Iran is willing to engage in direct talks with the U.S., providing the U.S. is up front – presumably not acting as a surrogate for Israel or with some other hidden agenda. Dennis Rodman says that while he was in North Korea their head of state Kim told Rodman to ask Obama to phone him. Assuming that these overtures are accurate, will the U.S. act positively on them? Or will it engage in the apparent Senator John McCain mode of attempting to bomb countries which refuse to accept the U.S.'s agenda into submission?

Its impossible for one country to remove another without using force, so Iran's claims that they only want to remove Israel and not kill Jews a pathetic argument. They're developing nuclear weapons, we know that. Every competent intelligence agency says so, so lets stop beating that dead horse already, shall we? Finally, the real threat isn't Iran directly engaging the US or Israel with nuclear weapons, since they know the end result would be a desert turned to glass courtesy of a few Israeli sub launched missiles. The real threat is Iran giving one or two of those things to a terrorist group, so we have no idea where they are and winding up in the middle of NYC or London. That's the reason for preventing Iran from going nuclear at all costs. No civilized nation would ever use them again. Iran is not civilized.

BTW, the sentence about wiping Israel off the earth is translated in a wrong way. The best way to describe the sentence is that Israel will be diminished (not by killing or invading, but by themselves). They said the same thing about the Soviet Union years before their turmoil in 1991.

Obfuscation. The "wiped off the map" translation came from the Iranians themselves.
Changing it to some other metaphor doesn't change the intention.

Why Iran needs nuke bomb? To hit Israel? They are not stupid, they understand Iran will be destroyed in a few hours.
They need that to control all f. Oil. To bend over all the Muslims around and be the king of middle east. They do not care about Israel, actually I think they use to be very good to Israel in the past. This all about the oil. That why Iran has to be stopped.

While US is sinking quickly financially, our new Secr of Defense has soothed poor dear Israel's concerns about the money continuing to flow to them (reported in Haaretz newspaper). Why?!! I'm sure Israel leadership whinged about prospects of not receiving their billions for this year, It is amazing, seeing their BEST ALLY having financial troubles and they continue to ask for their handout. Sick, greedy, racist, mammonist-worshiping society.
