Harlem shaking the Arab world?

For more Last Look, watch GPS, Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

In America, "Harlem Shake" may be the top pop single. In Egypt and Tunisia, there's some serious Harlem shaking going on. And it's causing leaders to tremble as it becomes a potent symbol of protest, revolt and defiance.

Take the kids in the video at a school in Tunisia. They danced en masse to the song and posted their exploits on YouTube. That prompted a quarter of a million hits and reports of an investigation by the country's minister of education and that prompted a backlash. Video after video after video of Tunisians proudly doing the Harlem shake in defiance.

More from CNN: What the Shake has to do with Harlem

And then there's Egypt, where the authorities went further and the backlash was worse. Four pharmaceutical students were arrested for doing this Harlem shake in front of the pyramids, and that set off a big reaction. Late in the week in Cairo, there was a mass shake in front of the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters to protest.

Now, who says America's popular culture exports have no value?

Let's make this very plain and simple: You have the freedom of expression. You are free to express your feelings about anything in the world. However, you're not the only person who gets this right! I, too, have the freedom of expression. So, if you say that you don't like gay people, and I respond by calling you an ignorant bigot, we are both exercising our rights :) . You have the right to express yourself; not the right to be free of criticism.

you can express that, it'll just make you look like a butt hurt loser. something you're hidin'? shake shake shake

You just expressed it. And though you may look like an azs for doing so, nobody is going to arrest you for it.

      • mrhapiguy

Just because you are free to express your prejudices does not mean it is smart to do so. Others are just as free to respond. I suggest you keep your hateful views to yourself if you can not handle the criticism.

Gays are gross, immoral, unnatural and in every possible way bad for society and a bad for children to be around. 95% of people feel this same way, gay is a mental health disorder and should be fixed – not encouraged!!! Society is falling apart and some people think it's OK and we should just embrace this people like there's nothing wrong with them.

Please keep your hate speech in church where it is protected.

You have the right. I am gay and don't care, it doesn't bother me, maybe I am just a strong willed person and don't feel the need to point out displeasure at everything other people say, which usually makes others look like their whining or makes them feel like they are righteous individuals in their own mind.

        Stay strong my friends.

You have the freedom to express whatever thoughts you have HOWEVER, everyone else ALSO has the freedom to express their displeasure at your bigoted thoiughts.

Based on the fact that you just expressed what you said you cannot express, you are either very stupid, or a liar, or both.

      • The wise owl

Retwqaas, you can say you don’t like gays just as we can say that we don’t like your opinion. Freedom of expression goes both ways dummy.
Eric, can you back up any of that hate speech? You say that they are gross, to you, that is fine, but it doesn’t make them bad for society or for children to be around. Can you provide anything that backs up that statement? The vast majority of child abusers identify themselves has being straight. The American Medical Association and the American Mental Health Association would disagree with you calling it a mental disorder. In fact the one and only study that said that it might be able to be cured has since recanted it and apologized for all of the damage that has been done to people who subjected to praying the gay away and other mock therapies. Tell me how society is falling apart and show me how the gays are responsible for it. I double dog dare you!

Sorry, point is the government can't tell you that you can't say something. Other people (i.e., non-bigots) are not constrained in what they say, they can point out that you're a neaderthal all day. (remember, freedom of speech doesn't just apply to you).

@ all of you dog piling this "sub human" – why are you not dog piling Keep it Real on this issue as well. I am deeply offended by the assumption the "sub human" goes to church (i.e. Christian) – remember bigotry goes both ways.

Save us from your self righteousness and stop all hatred. by the way, sorry to offend and "sub humans" that may have read this on a blog mistaken for ligitimate news.

        March 6, 2013 at 6:31 pm |
      • ANOTHER GAY CHRISTIAN

I am glad that Christian is deeply offended. Now he can see how we gays feel when some people come in the name of Christ saying we are less than and deserving less rights, etc. We have been deeply offended as a community for decades. I have been called names even before I knew I got aware I was gay (I was however attracted since childhood just not aware). So this name calling and sensitivities go both ways.

Stop worrying so much about your dog and your picket fences and worry more about your neighbors, friends and fellows. I don't know what God wants but I am sure what God does not want and that is HATE. Peace to you all.

As long as they good law abiding citizens who do not infringe upon my rights, let people be the people they are. We are not all made in one mold. That's what makes our world interesting and diverse.

Your angry responses to the guy who mentioned freedom to say he hates gays explains why Arabs would respond angrily to whatever the stupid harlem shake is. Some American leaders (controlled by Israeli zioist masters) will keep you busy doing and glorifying the most stupid and vain things. It's freedom of speech if it hurts someone else. It's hate speech if it doesn't agree with you – how convenient!

i think this is overblown. CNN wants to make this a big deal, like how every other story has to be about gays (Anderson cooper, etc.). They stick something so much into your face that it becomes the talk of the town and then you're not as bothered by it.

This will go away on its own if they stop covering it, like the emo girls, against which CNN claimed Iraq was taking action. It's just a bunch of kids playing. They'll stop as soon as the beer intoxication loses its effect. Relax everyone!

I say to you, go to YouTube and watch "Rock the Casbah." Our music and culture are a direct assault on the restrictions of Muslim culture. They use the authority of Allah Himself to preach against Western music, and guess what? Honey badger don't care. We make it, and they see it, and they make a choice about whether it's good or not. Sharia don't like it? Rock the Casbah.

Once again the reporter was wrong. The kids were arrested because they were in their UNDERWEAR in front of the pyramids. NOT because they were shaking. If he had been accurate (and not trying to simply add drama) he would have stated that all over CAIRO they are doing this and even the police and military have videos on YOUTUBE. Americans are the ones who are backwards – they stick their things into the back sides to enjoy contact with someone elses excrement. People who do that are cool and are glorified. How free is speech criticizing such backward and disgusting activity? How free is reading and preaching the bible, such verses that are against such backwardness. What you DONT know it, it does go on amongst them, just behind closed doors, because they will be arrested or hanged(Iran) if someone finds out just as incest happens there. People here do not marry they own relatives as what goes on there because of the chance of problems with their children if they do so. Gays were born that way(not that some of it would choose it either). They are no different than a child born without an arm, or mentally challenged, or conjoined twins. Something happens in utero at conception, it happens in animals too. We help children with other afflictions they are born with. ----------------------------------–

I must disagree. The internet is nothing more than a tool – a powerful tool but a tool nonetheless – and to which I think you give it far more credit than it merits. It is the idea being communicated, not the means by which it was communicated – does it invalidate how powerful it is or that it is pivotal in reaching out to so many? No, that is true. But first you must have an idea that people believe in. The right to express ourselves, as your namesake implies, is so fundamentally simple we understand it intuitively – but I think you have to give the people that push that envelope more credit than the technology.

disagree..it is far far more important than a tool of protests. The internet allows curious minds to learn about other ideas..this instills curiosity, opens minds and fights brainwashing, and nationalistic upbringing. It is this exposure to information and ideas that changes cultures and empowers people to think independently... this is what caused the Arab spring..this is what is causing these protests and this is what will empower previously ignorant populations to understand just how oppressed they really are.

Mark, an idea will go nowhere with out a means to communicate it. The Internet is a huge media tool that covers the world and spreads ideas instantaneously.

The means to communicate the idea has been around forever. albeit slowly and in more or less a one to one relationship between communicators.
The internet IS the tool that is making all of this possible because it brings multiplicity and speed to the communication of a message. It eliminates the barriers of time, distance and language. it is instantaneous .. and this allows for it to be used to organize and coordinate the message. This is new.
You have a very simplistic grasp on what is happening, I suggest you THINK about it a bit more before you speak.

Without the Internet, this "shake" will likely not have been seen/heard/learned in North Africa and thereabouts....nor would the rest of the world be seeing North Africans dance to it....nor would North African govts care. Like "Gangnam Style"....no youtube video, no fame....just ordinary song that wouldn't have gotten airplay beyond Seoul (and a month or two at that).

Religious knuckleheads just don't get that the rest of us don't give a flying $%^& about their stupid rules and regulations. The only reason any of the oppression based religions are still here is due to thier willingness to use violence to coerce the non-believers into falling into lock step line – nothing at all to do with "truth". Believe or die – Christ's motto? Sure was for the enforcers of his church for the last 2000 years. I prey that every single person who has ever killed another in the name of God/Jesus/Allah etc is, or will be, swimming in the lake of fire for all of eternity. Every single one!

This is just more evidence that the power of religion is declining. After thousands of years of religious oppression, the spread of knowledge and enlightenment is reducing religion's vice grip on humanity, leading the world towards a better, more free, and more tolerant future. To all the priests, imams, rabbis, religious bigots, and theocratic dictators: we are no longer your monkeys. With the advent of the Internet, you can no longer keep the human spirit chained or knowledge restrained; everyone now has access to the most profound, inspirational, and humbling discoveries of mankind. For the sake of both religious fanatics and the people they oppress, I hope religion continues its slow death.

Fundamentalists of all religions fear anything that has not been done for a thousand or so years. The pope resigns, and people wring their hands over the color of his shoes and what to call him. People wiggle their hips and their leaders tremble with fear and arrest people. Girls wear clothing that does not cover them from head to foot and they are beaten. And in this country, if you don't say that everything good that happens is gods work, you are an outcast in many places. They are all the same, and sad.

Money is the only truly free speech in this country anymore. It buys politicians and elections, it floods the media with its messages while blocking out the ability of the common individual to be heard, it buys entry into the meetings and halls of power, it rents or purchases venues for meetings and air time while citizens without it are shunted to fenced in "free speech zones" that are out of sight and out of mind. It magnifies the voice of corporate CEOs over that of their workers and that of individual voters. It buys "experts" that agree with its views and slants their research and the reporting of their findings. It perverts the justice system by buying teams of lawyers and dragging on lawsuits until the opposition folds due to lack of funds and exhaustion. On those rare occasions when it loses a suit, it delays implementation of sentences and penalties through endless appeals. Its influence is pervasive and silences the majority.

The Harlem Shake is nothing but simulated copulation and panders to the lowest common denominator. It is inimical to civilized society, lacks both originality and taste and is morally reprehensible. Islam, on the other hand, is far superior both intellectually and morally to the other two of the so called great monotheistic religions.

Dear Mr. Zakaria, first of all, credit goes to the first Harlem Shake youtube video uploaded by Australians. You are/were always accurate, and so we request that you acknowledge that the trend was started by the ozzies and not americans. Second of all, Mr. Zakaria, It is not always about America. if anything, none of the american values exported contributed to the Arab spring which as a matter of fact was only to a certain extent successful in the repression Arab regimes and not in Arab bribery regimes (where any protest was not even entertained). The arab spring was spurred by the will of people to live freely (not only an american value by the way) only to be shut down a bit later (oh where was America in that?) – where are American values in what's happening today in Syria. You bring zero value in trying to give credit in the first place to American values (with all our due respect).

People used to look up to America for their defiance in the face of injustice: now America poisons the world with a culture that prompts stupidity and moral decline. I wish if a couple of the groups that have preformed this shake maybe could have taken 30 minutes of their time to protest the government not coming up with a budget and a 13% cut in social and educational programs No that would be to lame, extreme and just being a stick in the mud.

This is the reason why we keep seeing such unrest in the countries where the Arab Spring occurred.
The problem is the population in these countries knows this is what they fought for, but since so little has actually changed they are still restless. Compared to the changes that occurred in Eastern Europe these changes are going to be monumental. They are going to change Muslim society to the point where you will not be able to tell apart a picture of the youth in a Muslim city from the youth in American one. No longer will the populace believe their leader when they tell them that their reason for their hardship is due soley to the oppression of the Palestinians in some far off land.

      Occupy?
      So what were they protesting?
Was their message clear and consice as to what their demands were?
If these things were not clear then this is where the Occupy movement fell apart. You can blame the authorities for taking a hard handed approach as much as you want, but American's know this lack of a central message is where the Occupy message fell apart. The movement was not lost at the hands of clubs or pepper spray, but instead a lack of interest by everyone, which eventually included the protesters.
As we notice in your comment, all you even mention is the term "Occupy": Once "Occupy Wall Street" became the "Occupy Movement" – (per Wikipedia – The Occupy movement is an international protest movement against social and economic inequality). All we noticed were a bunch of lazy people who were hoping to get something for nothing.

This isn't freedom of expression this is just simply acting stupid and childish. There are other ways to protest your feelings than embarrassing yourself. In the past there were many respectable reformers and speakers and honorable people. Things were done with maturity and seriousness, but the world has really grown immature and out of control. You can barely find a traditional society anymore with simple values, the world is eroding. I feel sorry for the generations of kids that must grow up in this kind of world. No class. Do you want to act like people or animals? I think we know the answer already. God help us.

I see your point, but you have to remember that in the Arab world there society is so repressive from any form of expression: dancing, western music and modest clothing, that these spontaneous outbursts might be fairly effective in terms of a protest against the repressive and backward idealogies of Islam.

I do see your point. But you have to remember that in the Arab world their society is so repressive that any form of expression: dancing, western music and dressing provocatively, would be considered a protest. Since the Harlem Shake incorporates all of these elements, even these isolated spontaneous outbursts might be fairly effective in terms of a protest against the repressive and backward idealogies where these people live.

Yeah, and The Mighty Wurlitzer plays on. These people are pawns of the CIA.

HBar your CIA comment is ludacris, but I believe there must be something that you really fear in these protests, otherwise you would not lash out with another inane conspiracy theory such as this. Is it possible that modernity is begining to effect the Arab world? Where women will be allowed to have the same rights as men: education, driving, working and not having to cover their faces in public. This is just the beginning: the winds of change are going to start whipping through the Arab World and no one is going to be able to stop that train from finally reaching Mecca.

None of these people are doing the Harlem Shake. They are merely duplicating a mocking of the Harlem Shake and insulting the culture of Harlem.
