Who do Americans like – and dislike?

American media spills a lot of ink on polls that tell us which nations hate America, which ones tolerate America and which ones really like us. But much less is known about how Americans feel about our brothers and sisters abroad when we even deign to think about them. Gallup has a new poll that does just that, with some surprising results.

So, without further ado, America's most hated nations:  Number five, the Palestinian Authority. Number four, Syria. Number three, Pakistan. Number two, North Korea. And the nation Americans feel least favorable about is Iran. So, who do we love? In fifth place, France. Then Japan, then Germany. Those last two show that Americans can really get over the past. Great Britain gets second place, and we don't have the luxury to travel very far to find our bosom buddy.

Canada is number one. It looks like we have entirely gotten over the War of 1812. Does anybody even remember what it was about? Hint: if it had gone the other way, there would be no Canada today.

It's quite funny actually how we have bought into hating exactly the same countries our goverment wants us to hate.

People in America would never like to be told by the government whom to like. However, it is hard for an American to like a country which harbors terrorists and shoots girls going to school.

Our governments have more sophisticated way of influencing our opinion towards things! So don't believe everything you hear from politicians and media.

not so true. our media and congress (though our media) tell us every second who are our enemies and who should we love or hate! How would you know good or bad if you didn't hear from media or never went to those countries you love and hate. And yeah, don't bother to tell me that every american have seen
/visited every country on the planet earth. Somebody has to tell us so its our media brain-washed who receive billions of dollars from their sonsors, i.e., big corporations, lobbyists and interest groups. These same groups pay to your congress and tell them to tell us their likes and dislikes. So its not as simple as you think!!!

Agreed. You summrized it well Ekram. May I add, American media does the propanda work to further American Govt future policy/cause/goals (10, 20 even 50 years from now), be it military intervention, sanctions, or political pressure on other countries. This is a brain-wash, plain and simple.

because our politicians have pretty sophisticated way of brain-washing american publics mind! lobbysts/AIPAC, media bankroll these politicians/policy makers to tell you who should you like or dislike? And you think that its your own brain letting you decide!!! We believe what media/politicians tell us and we don't have any other way to find out ourselves. We think and believe that these politicians/media always tell us truth but far from it........just think about invasion of you remember what these politicians told us about iraq having WMD? There were none and they all knew it was not true butthey fool us!

Hitting yourself with the book doesn't count as reading it.

"the 1953 CIA coup in Iran,"

Yes we other threw a communist on request from the british after made a move to steal their property, installed a "dictator" who's "regime" had the best record of protecting women's rights in the muslim world, communist and islamists provocateurs were the only ones having a tantrum, if they could do so in public, the average iranian would tell you las vegas of the middle east was better day than the current failed state run by greasy mullah morons.

the US sponsoring of a right-wing dictatorship in South Korea," Hahahah, are you serious? I don't even know where to begin, so let me ask you this: which korea is an economic powerhouse with human rights that currently up to par if not better than whats found in most western nations, and which korea is insular, starving live action role play or Orwell's 1984? Hows that for some validation of US foireng policy, need I go on

" US support for apartheid in Palestine, etc."

Who will set the Muslim to rule over the Jew? Allah... Until the Jew hides behind the rock and the tree. But the rock and tree will say: 'Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, a Jew hides behind me, come and kill him.' Except for the Gharqad tree, which is the tree of the Jews. We believe in this Hadith. We are convinced also that this Hadith heralds the spread of Islam and its rule over all the land... Oh Allah, accept our martyrs in the highest heavens... Oh Allah, show the Jews a black day... Oh Allah, annihilate the Jews and their supporters... Oh Allah, raise the flag of Jihad across the land... Oh Allah, forgive our sins

    "And for Pakistan, drone attacks."

a nation which provided sanctuary and assistance to the taliban, and as matter of fact largely invented the taliban, LONG before the first drone took to the skies. Excuse me if I cannot summon any tears for them.

"And as I said, apart from hostage-taking, Iran, North-Korea, Syria, and Pakistan have never done anything to America itself."

So your objectively wrong and won't admit it.

Did Canada participate in WWII....oh ya I remember they chose to storm the empty beach at Normandy ( Canada couldn't control Panama City Beach Fl during spring break) so threatening not to participate during the next world war will not keep many of us up at night. Keep riding the coat tails of the US, we are used to it. Your do however produce dam good syrup. Good night Canada!

I'm Canadian. So it's nice to be # 1 in anything. But I don't know where Australia is in this list. I would have thought it would be in the top three at least, maybe even # 1.

Canada is a great friend and neighbor for America. They certainly give the US less to worry about than our southern neighbor.

Canada also defended the entire Atlantic coast and shipping lines to Britian for a large part of WWII while the America fleet was busy in the pacific. They protected the entire Eastern coast of Canada and the US from German U boat attacks.

They have bled and died beisde American soldiers, in many wars. Including WWII, the Korean War, and Afghanistan.
They also contibute great numbers of soldiers to UN peacekeeping missions around the world.

They have given America a remarkable number of great Actors, Comedians, and Musicians, to enjoy, considering their population is much smaller.

Canadians are a people any American can be proud to call friend, Eh!

The right question is: which are US-friendly nations, and which not. USA cannot afford to ask, "who do Americans like and dislike", because wrong, non-productive South Korea collaboration, brough USA big failures, not only in international markets, but also in USA.

Products or services sold in US soil coming from socialist and communist monopolies. Are they really better and cheaper in USA? Is it happening the same in the IT businesses?
In Mexico food and medicine do not pay VAT, and because it is produce in Mexico, it would not cost more in USA, but the surprise it is that the prices in USA surpass several times the most expensive price for the same product in a VIP store located in Mexico, and the quality is not even better that the worse store in Mexico. Some of the Mexican brands are not even located in the States; they are not selling directly they are using small intermediaries for their product distribution in the States, most of them located in San Antonio, TX. It is time to produce in the States the Mexican food we use to import because it is so expensive and it is not the same quality and price that you can find in any market in Mexico.
In IT, it seems that we live in India instead of USA. The Indian origin monopolies have closed almost all the doors for Americans, they control the IT industry, we import consultant hours On Site or Offshore, also there is a great need to have more American working hours in IT. We use to surpass in productivity any country in the world and today there is no need to compete because the IT agreements are done at the level of the owners or shareholders instead of expertise IT directors or managers. Also the prices are not lower; they are charging American IT prices per consultant but with long term projects. The true is that USA should apply Made in America is this economic sector as a national strategy.

Americans know little about other countries. They simply make their choices, based on what the media publishes, which is not a very intelligent way to make those choices.

My choices would be based on personal experiences, more than on news coverage, from having been there, for likes, and how dangerous they are to visit, for dislikes. There are only a limited number of countries, I would consider safe to travel in, these days.

Canada is number one!? Who gives a sh!t about Canada? Canadian's are morons. The country has nothing to offer but Mountie's and penny pinching tubs of lard. I'm not even sure why Canada has a military. Who would want to invade that desolate wasteland? And France at number 5 is really pushing it. The French are coward's and their entire culture screams, "I'm gay." American's are extremely obese, lazy, arrogant, selfish @ssholes that think they're better than everyone else. I love and respect the USA military but the US populous I could do without. Who would want to be apart of a culture that believes getting fat off fast food and drinking beer is how to live life? Try a freaking salad or God forbid you try a piece of fruit! I know I'll get a lot of hate from this comment but before you reply just know that I can't really care less. Any comment from someone I don't know is worth to me about as much as a bag of dog sh!t so do with that what you will.

From a residence of Canada, the peaceful neighbor that get drag into your country's sh!t too MUCH!

America is a great country and its people, on average, are loving and caring.....American way of life and culture is loved and followed throughout the world. But unfortunately, American politics is very dirty and biased towards certain nations for very little or no good reason. American politics is heavily influenced by big corporations who lobby and donate millions of dollars to individuals and two political parties. Also, groups like AIPAC and neoconservative think tanks have too much influence on American domestic and foreign policies, especially in the Middle-Eastern affairs. As long groups like these have imbalanced/biased influence in the American politics, there will be very little love for America in many parts of the world (if we care about their love and affection!).
