How Muslims should respond to terror

"Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

By Fareed Zakaria

The sheer barbarism of the attack on a British soldier in Woolwich is really beyond comprehension – the alleged murderers are said to have hacked the victim to death, waited for the police to arrive, and seemed to encourage people to videotape their brutality.

And yet, we have to search for some way to think about what appears to be our future.

Terrorism used to be about something big and dramatic. But perhaps because groups like al Qaeda are on the run, their people hunted, their money tracked, their hideouts bombed, Woolwich and Boston have become the new faces of terror – a few people, disturbed or fanatical, radicalized by things they have read or watched, decide to commit evil.

How do you detect this kind of danger? It seems impossible.

This was the first terrorist killing on British soil since the London bus and subway bombings in 2005. In fact, since the Madrid and London bombings, there have been just three times that Islamic terrorists have killed people in Western Europe – Woolwich, the equally gruesome 2012 murders in France that killed French soldiers and children and a Rabbi, and the killing of U.S. soldiers in Frankfurt.

More from GPS: Here we go again

Europe's governments have been doing a good job with police and counter-terrorism work – and that might explain the relative calm of recent years. They have also done a much better job than in the past at reaching out and helping to integrate their Muslim communities. And the communities have been responding much more strongly against these isolated acts committed by murderers in the name of Islam.

The Muslim Council of Britain issued an unequivocal statement condemning the latest killing, supporting British soldiers, and urging the police to do whatever it needed to, unhindered and unhampered. That is precisely the kind of statement all leaders of Muslim communities need to make whenever one of these kinds of attacks takes place.

I understand the feeling that some have that they should not be held responsible for the actions of a few perverted madmen. But the trouble is that these madmen claim that they are killing in the name of Islam and someone has to refute their claims – as often as they make them.

Now...the alleged murderer in Woolwich claimed that he was retaliating against British soldiers killing Muslims in Afghanistan.

I wish Muslim leaders would make the point that British – and American and other allied soldiers – are in Afghanistan at the invitation of the democratically elected government of that country. They are defending that government and Muslims every day from terrorist attacks and insurgent warfare. If these people want to protest the killing of Muslims, they should direct their wrath at the Taliban and al Qaeda and other jihadi groups because they are the ones who are killing Muslims and many others.

We need to hear this message more often and more loudly.

You wrote "I wish Muslim leaders would make the point that British – and American and other allied soldiers – are in Afghanistan at the invitation of the democratically elected government of that country." Get your facts straight about Afghanistan Mr. Zakaria. Which democratically elected government of Afghanistan was in existence? And when exactly did they meaning the democratically elected government of Afghanistan invite the US, UK.. to invade Afghanistan? Mr. Zakaria you represent Muslims and Islam, please get your facts straight.

I agree, the Americans and the British were not invited into Afghanistan, they inhumanely invaded a sovereign country.

The Coalition Force was invited into Afghanistan exactly the way the Allies were invited to attack the Nazis in Europe: by attacks against the West by terrorist (in this case, Nazi) forces. The Taliban government of Afghanistan was not elected: it shot and terrorized its way to power. It was a terrorist government. The Taliban are still terrorist, but they are out of power, and they are being hunted by the Afghan army. The Taliban is responsible for 85& of all terrorist attacks world wide, but all their attacks are against other Muslims, mostly Shia; and nearly all their cowardly attacks are in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I do not mean to say the Coalition Forces did not occasionally commit unwarranted killings, but that was NOT government policy, unlike Taliban policy which IS to kill civilians and other innocents.

The western world was introduced to Islam by means of terrorism 30 or so years ago. Sadly, Islamists who did not support terrorism said nothing:therefore, the terms "Islam" and "terrorism" became intertwined in the minds of westerners. It is the duty of the vast majority of peace-lving Muslims to stand up against the few who have so maligned their religion. Why do the majority remain silent?

Normally, I would agree. If things were the other way around, and let's say some fanatical Christian preacher galvanized his flock into killing Muslims going about their business through suicide bombs and random acts of terror, then the media declared them "Christian Terrorists" my normal reaction would be to do nothing and think "those guys are whack jobs." If it continued, I would be offended my religion was associated with a bunch of nutters and would speak out. I thiink Muslims as a whole are offended, but not consistently saying "those guys are nothing like me" because of the reinforced "us vs them" mentality of the media.

As long as it's easy to accuse anyone (especially Muslims or people living in Muslim dominated/non-dominated countries) of blasphemy with no proof–they aren't going to say anything–even if innocent people are killed. Silence seems to be their way and nobody is going to change it.

I think that if every Muslim were to follow the example of the beloved Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, and display Islam through righteous character, we wouldn't have Islamophobes. In fact if Muslims were more accepting of each other, we wouldn't be sidelining our youth into terrorism. We can blame the West for their wars, for disgustingly carving out the Middle East to their liking with no intelligence or forethought. But blaming isn't getting us anywhere. God tells us in the quran that He wont change a people until they change themselves. So wake up, Muslims, and start practicing your religion. Muslims are in a coma and it's about time we wake up to show the beauty of our religion. Imagine if every Muslim acted kindly toward their neighbors? We wouldn't have this problem. Please check out whyislam.org to find out more about islam, and to ask questions. It hurts to see people writing such horrible lies about an ancient and beautiful religion, it really does.

What are you going to do with sura 5:51 take not the Jews and Christians for friends... Besides, you write Mohamed, peace be blah blah blah, isn't the truthful translation in arabic "god's prayers upon him.... who is your god praying to ...he must pray to someone above him (think about that) What example did Mohamed (who didn't have a prophesy) set when he married at age 54 a 9 year old child Aisha, or when he forced his adopted son to divorce his wife in order that he can marry her (said it was his god) what god doesn't hear a prayer except in arabic (an ignorant one obviously) and what god makes mere mortals fight for him and punishes by cutting of limbs. Truly wake up and see that you've been worshiping the devil himself who's making you circle around a stone, kiss a stone, stone a ? total idol worshiping.

@Christian fundamentalist. Most of the violence in the bible is god telling Joseph or someone to exterminate a certain city, at a certain point in time. That is why we don't have as many Christian terrorists, we have some but not nearly as much as we have Muslim terrorists. yes in the bible there are some horrible parts but its different to Islam in Islam its an open ended call to jihad and to kill the enemy's of Islam whenever and however. Terrorist groups like Al-Shabab, Al-Qaeda and the Taliban actually are following the Qua' ran

The sura you are referring to only meant not to take Jews and Christians as your allies because both these two religions were conspiring to eliminate Islam on this earth, which by this process they are still trying to destroy Islam till this present day.

I think what you say to other Muslims is true, show a better light of your faith. But many are leaving the faith but cant tell you that, because they will be called an apostate and be subjected to problems and even death from your political, fundamentalist Islamists. They are leaving because they want to embrace more peaceful, spiritual feelings. Muslims youth need to be more free thinking, and learn about others, not be forced to go along with something just because their parents or religious cleric tell them so, because SOME of them use it to control their hearts and minds. The part many of you dont want to admit to is that some of those wars were a result of these same Islamic fundamentalists (Osama being only one), who incite hatred and proclaim their is a war on Muslims when there never was. They tell you that so you will die for THEM. because a peaceful creator would never approve of killing anyone in the name of religion. You are forgetting that US retaliated because of Osama, and they were NEVER against Afghans or Muslims. These radicals are your enemies too, they are trying to impose their agendas on Muslims first using Islamic sharia law, then they will try to have another Caliphate, which is not a good thing. A Caliphate represents control, violence, force and NOT God. Control your extremists and there wont be retaliations.Good Muslims need to work more closely with non Muslims to remove these terrorists who are invading your protests, elections, through wars they start to unite you. Think about it. We are with you good Muslims, not against you.

Christianity has been involved in mass killings since its inception as an organized religion. Let's have a snap shot of the so called peaceful religion of Christianity, starting by the Spanish Inquisition, crusades, conquests of distant lands and allow mass murders of local natives, Hitler's Christian murderers, Christian Americas' Hiroshima & Nagasaki Atomic bombing, Iraq killings, Afghanistan murders...... The list goes on an on, and now the Christians are planing to go after Iran. By all these accounts one would wonder if Christianity is really a peaceful religion!

Keep on with the message, you have to know that most Christians haven't read their bible to the fullest. They only rely on their priests to quote the Bible to them and in the process they avoid the controversial verses of the bible in fear of losing their church members, well it is a fact they can't allow to lose their customers since the church is a business organization.

Story of Muslim in India. Muslims came to India 1000 years ago. Then Mohmad Ali Zinnah declared that Muslim are separate nation and they can not live with Hindu in India. Basis of Pakistan. This Mohmad Zinnah's grand father was a Hindu merchant who fell on hard time. .Agha Khan ( Muslim sect leader who lives in Spain) helped him financially on condition that he convert to Islam. So after another 1000 (930 to be exact) years this story will repeat in US.

Fareed please read the Koran to find out why Muslims kill who they believe are non-Muslims. The Koran advocates death to anyone deemed to be at war with Islam. It is just that simple. Madmen are found in every society and culture on earth. Madmen that follow the Koran have justification to kill. Simple, True and something Every Muslim will never admit because it verifies that Islam is an Ideology dressed up as a religion invented by a 7th century Warlord who wanted to take over a city.

There was complaint against the war. but you have to remember, Saddam put that info out there that he had WMD, he told many people that so Iran would here it, as a deterrent to Iran. Those he told, told US and other intelligent agencies in the region and in Europe. Saddam had been a menace to US for years, he had been firing on their planes, attacking Kuwait, killing Kurds and Shia and killing the families of many Iraqi Americans and others. Had Iran and other foreign insurgents not interfered by coming in and making it a sectarian war, they would have got out after arresting Saddam9his people couldnt do it, Ba'athists ruled). US stayed because of the violence, which also included trying to protect the Iraqi people when they could..You dont hear about the stories where US soldiers risked or gave their lives to save an Iraqi enough, but it happened a lot. Arab culture needs to change. They need to control their emotions, quit over reacting, and they need to use more dialogue. Its not just some interpretations of Islam its also the culture. There is more death from other Muslims than from Americans. Muslims blamed it on oil, then said US was there to occupy, then said it was a war on Muslims, all of it a lie. So perhaps American government need to be more loud and clear about their intentions, because many Afghans were in remote areas and thought it was another Russian occupation because theyd never heard of Osama or AQ. I know they tried in varying ways but because of terrain and such it was difficult to reach all of the people. At any rate its all in the past and we ALL need to move forward. We dont need to hate each other, that will always work against us and prevent dialogue. Peace should always be the goal if possible.Muslims need to have a voice against these extremist Islamics. We need to support their voices with our own thats true, and they need to voice louder their rejection of fundamentalist, political Islamists who are hurting Muslims more then non Muslims. Once they win over them, they will continue. Supporting good Muslims is imperative for the world.

Ok......."al Qaeda are on the run, their people hunted, their money tracked, their hideouts bombed..." Since when exactly?, last time I looked they were hiring them to fight in Syria against that country's army and arming them to do it. This in spite of the video evidence that they fully intend to kill anyone and everyone who doesn't worship their satanic deity. There is a little book that's been around for a few years now that describes these people to a prophetic "T". The book outlines their rise to power on a platform of peace, describes their beheading of Christian's and displays three symbols to warn the believer of this foe. The symbols are written in Arabic and describe a badge worn by the foe that says " In the name of Allah". Written long before Islam was even formed this Truth was prophesied and we now see its fulfillment throughout the world.

It is always easy to blame others. Let's take some responsibility. At the time of the Russian occupation of Afghanistan the US, the Brits and Saudis poured in millions of dollars to defeat the USSR. It was obvious to everyone that the bulk of those millions went to Pakistan's ISI. Today it is more than clear to everyone that the ISI has been, and continues to be, the main source of support, supply and planning for all the troop plots that killed, and are still killing poor Afghan and Americans. Top US officials know these facts, yet they still pay the Pakistani government millions of dollars annually, as we have done for the last 30 years, and that can be easily be called extortion money. That money comes from the American tax payer. That makes us, the tax payers, complicit in this humiliating scenario. How long will we continue to contribute to this duplicitous and tragic foreign policy before we, the people, demand this pathetic charade ends? If we do not, we will need to answer to the future children of both our countries for our failure.

A few friends I met here in Philadelphia who were here to take a class at the University of Pennsylvania told me of the frustration they had with fellow Pakistanis . They told me that almost everyone they know is illiterate and get their news and information solely from word of mouth . Everthing they know is from the rumor mill , while some of what they hear may be true , most of what they "know" is false . Condoms kill , AIDS is an American creation , etc. If you think that you can dictate how to react to terrorism to people that rely on word of mouth you are out of your mind .

So Mr. Fareed, What is your opinion about stopping bloodshed in Syria. Why say no to American agencies to stop supporting and arming anti govt. warriors Just to topple Government. Can't they see thousands of innocent people dying due to it. Mr. CIA paid employee don't try to expose dark side of other society. Have you ever programmed Good cultural values of Islam or Muslim Society. Why most of the people in world hate Americans? Because they directly interfere the political system of the country no matter how many people die due to that and than after it they run away.

Muslim people are just like anybody else, the problem is their mental religion which means no mater what they never will see the world as it is.

We Muslims do condemn such attacks that happen in the name of Islam, but we expect the western world to condemn when Israelis kill innocent Muslims in Palestine, or buddest kill Muslims in Burma.
