Analyst: Pakistan knows where al-Zawahiri is

Fareed speaks with Carlotta Gall, ‘New York Times’ reporter and author of ‘The Wrong Enemy:  America in Afghanistan, 2001-2014’, about the future of Afghanistan.Watch the full interview this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

What do you think Pakistan's role will be once we start pulling out? They're going to try to fill that vacuum, probably.

I think it's already clear that they're determined to see a resurgence of the Taliban. They're supporting them. They're encouraging them.  There's been a spate of attacks. Just now, I was just in Kabul two days ago. We had a suicide bombing almost every day that I was there in the last week. And that's all coming from Pakistan.  The madrassas have closed, you know, and they're all going in.

And that's clearly what needs to be looked at very strongly, because the Pakistanis have not finished their war. And what they want is, through a proxy force, to dominate affairs in Afghanistan.  And they're still going to continue...

And that proxy force is the Taliban, for the Pakistanis?

The Taliban, yes, and actually al Qaeda has shown there they were protecting and hiding bin Laden. And al-Zawahiri, who's taken over from bin Laden, is head of al Qaeda, he's in Pakistan. And I have a passage in the book which shows that they certainly, in 2005, they were hiding him, the Pakistani government.

Do you think the Pakistani government knows where Zawahiri, the head of al Qaeda, is?

Yes. Absolutely.

Where she was been from last 14 years, was waiting for right time to unveil or this is another plot to disintegrate another Country, while failing from IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN and SYRIA. Why all USA's claims for these countries were not on truth, as was disclosed by their own Writers, Journalists and program hosts? And why it is claimed that 9/11 was orchestrated by CIA or USA itself, as Larry Silverstein of Silverstein Properties bought the lease of 99 years just few days back, and earned a sum of more than $4.55 billion as he inducted terrorist act into WTC insurance. Why the hell he knew their will be any act of terrorism before it happened. and also how come we believe that they found Bin laden in Pakistan, while none of his credentials, proof has been produced.
So what is happening today is what they have planned yesterday. and she is one of their asset, as she is Playing with Marketing gimmicks for her new book.

@darling shais. When you said this: ....and also how come we believe that they found Bin laden in Pakistan, while none of his credentials, proof has been produced. You immediately told us that you are uninformed, you talking garbage, and have no proof. So fortunately you did not waste any paper, just wasted some space on this webpage.

Chrissy that is all theatrics by the family to take attention away from the what they were actually charged for and media has hyped that by an umpteen percentage! what really happened was the police went in to investigate stealing of electricity and natural gas from this family on request of the utility company ..and they were met with harassment and stones. At this point police registered a case against the entire family note "registered" a case against the family and "no one was ever arrested"!! the baby was not singled out so to speak..

Of course Pakistan is hiding Zawahiri, just like they were hiding Bin Laden. Pakistan is home to Al Qaeda, so where else would the Al Qaeda leaders hide? Muslim terrorists are always treated like celebrities and heroes in Pakistan.

The Earth is immense. To change its orbital velocity by even one measly meter per second would require an energy input of about 3×10^24 Joules, or 713 million Megatons of TNT. That's more than 7 million of the largest nuclear weapons ever designed. It just isn't going to happen.

Carlotta Gall has the gall to call a spade a spade! She is a courageous lady. On the other hand she needs to watch out for her safety because speaking the truth about a terrorist country like Pakistan can potentially endanger her life. The Pakistani Muslims are fanatics who would love to kill anybody who speaks the truth in the name of their Allah and Islam.

I wished it was that easy as sending a hellfire missile! Why do you think President Karzay is not signing the agreement with us? His biggest beef with president Obama has been exactly the findings of Carlotta Gall. Pakistan has always been and still is the main funding source behind Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden (may he burn in hell). 99% of suicide bombers including the recent attacks on Kabul hotel are all orchestrated by ISI (Pakistani Intelligence). So Karzai demanded that Obama faces Pakistan and deal with the real issue and only then he will sign the security agreement with U.S. but we know that isn't going to happen as US deems Pakistan as necessary evil. Until and unless we stop Pakistan, the problems in Afghanistan and perhaps the world will not go away.

Any CIA trained fugitives like Bin Laden or Zawahiri to fight their cold war against Russians and when they abandoned them after winning cold war trophy and they turned against their trainers is no liability of Pakistan.

Fareed Zakaria is a MUSLIM, just like you are, my dear ignoramus. He is a Harvard graduate, very smart, very well read, and his GPS show is so highly rated that it is off the charts! He has written 8 books and often ends up being the chief interviewer at many world conferences such as: World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. When you get invited to give the Commencement Address at Harvard, like Fareed was, then and only then can you stand up to this "giant" in terms of education and brain power. Until then, keep being an ignorant muslim, lost, hating the West, and talking rubbish on blogs.......... Pakistan has been a mess for 6 decades, and yes, your Politicians and your ISI are truly a SITCOM situation...... just like you were referring to.......... :)

No doubt FZ is a Harvard Graduate but when you are part of an agenda-driven organisation your smartness and your high level of education become just the tools in the hands of those organisations. CNN always accepted uncritically the narratives leading America to wars and hence acted as front to propagate the interests of those who profit from wars. Unfortunately American people's memory is so short lived they forget very recent history how their country has destroyed prosperous and functioning countries on false pretences. Similar case is being built against Pakistan. Pakistan's crime? It's the only Islamic country with atomic power.

My dear Masud Awan, of course CNN is going to be a loudspeaker for USA! Do you expect it to be a loudspeaker for Pakistan??? What Planet are you living on??? What is really sad is that you Muslims were the world leaders from 1100 – 1600 AD. Your Islamic world has sunk so low since then. Do you realize that it is only through education that you guys can be lifted up again??? Fareed Zakaria (a Muslim brother) should be the beacon that you guys aspire to. Instead, you guys follow your ignorant Mullahs, who teach you things from 1000 years ago, such as Jihad, which causes you guys to sink even lower, and more into chaos and poverty! So don't blame all your problems on the West. That's way too easy! Look at yourselves in the mirror first, and try harder to see just how ugly your Muslim world has become! Wake up, and smell your own stink.......... us Americans are trying to do the same......... this is a very hard thing to do, but hopefully this will make the world a better place for all of us.......... :)

        April 10, 2014 at 7:55 pm |
      • Masud Awan

My dear brother(how else can I address you if you don't have a name!) what CNN could do was to be a loudspeaker neither for America nor for Pakistan but a LOUDSPEAKER for truth and peace. But unfortunately that is not what CNN is for. If Zakaria were a smart guy he could at least have asked a few tough question about the evidence and sources of writers claims. But he seams to be coluding with her instead and giving words to her mouth. And did you not see the body language of the writer herself? She dose not seem confident at all when she lays those allegations. And how can she be absolutely sure regarding Alzawahiri's presence in Pakistan unless she personally saw him there. These, and a lot more other questions should have been asked because the implications and consequences of what she is claiming, and asking the American authorities for as a reaction, are dire for both countries. And mind you the authorities who run the afairs of Pakistan including the affairs of its atomic programm are not idiots. They are the same people who helped America and the West in defeating the 2nd supper power that was USSR and thus winning the Cold War for them. Now these are the facts CNN and other main stream media outlets will never tell American public. Now that it has been clearly proved that America has been invading and destroying other countries over packs of lies why should anyone trust the 'information' the writer is attempting to advance?

My dear Masud Awan, does Pakistan have even one radio or TV station that represents the truth and peace??? You see, my friend, we live in a biased world. Each nation wants to speak only their own viewpoint. We Americans know that Carlotta Gall is just trying to sell her silly book. But we also have over 1000 paid Pakistani citizens, on CIA payroll, that are watching, listening, and reporting to us, the situation on the ground, in Pakistan. So if even one of them can verify the location of Al Zawahiri, he is going to find out what a hellfire missile feels like, as he goes to Allah.

You see, my dear Masud Awan, Pakistan was hiding Osama Bin Laden for over three years, in Abbotabad, Pakistan. Very high-level officials, in Pakistan, knew that he was there. No doubt about it. These same high-level officials were receiving huge sums of money, at the same time, from USA, in military aid. That is the problem. It made Pakistan look like a snake. Cheaters. Double-faced. Not to be trusted. Nothing Pakistan can do now, can change our view. You will forever be treated like you deserve to be. Double-faced cheaters always get ground into the dust, eventually. Pakistan is going to find out, very painfully, what happens to snakes..........

      • Masud Awan

Dear brother, last paragraph of your post clearly shows what propaganda does to human mind – it poisons your mind, you refuse to consider other side's view point.
Comparing Pakistani news media with US media is like comparing mouse with elephant. Pakistani media neither claims to be the beacon of light nor has a global influence.
At least you are convinced Ms Gall's attempt is a cheap stunt to sell her book. As regards the case of 1000 CIA informants providing intelligence, there were more than thousand in Iraq, and the kind of intelligence they were providing and consequently what happened there everybody knows at this stage, and I am sure you are also aware of that. And that is precisely my point in this discussion.
Finding Osama from Abbottabad I am not so sure as I have not aware of any evidence so far revealed to the public. If you are aware of any evidence please enlighten me. If you remember there were claims made after 9/11 attacks that they found a Highjacker's passport in the rubble of twin towers. So they have habit of finding odd things at odd places! And I am sure they will find Alzawahiri in Pakistan as "where there is a will there is a way".
If you think some of the high officials in Pakistan were double-crossing the Americans why should you label each and every Pakistani as snakes . We as ordinary Pakistanies have nothing to do with the bribes you were advancing to your clients.
        So to sum up:
Propaganda is bad as it leads to wars.
Wars are bad because they cause destruction, misery and loss of innocent life.
Life is precious and every human being has responsibility to help to preserve life
All religions preach to preserve life, it is us the followers who misinterpret and fail to follow the commands. God help us all.
        Have a good day.

It is sad that Pakistanies put their heads in sand knowingly or unknowingly. This is going to harm their country.
You name a global terrorist organisation it is based in Pakistan, from Al Qaeda to Afghan Taliban to LeT, to East Turkistan Movement, to Jundila, to LeM etc etc.
What more proof of smooking guns do you need when OBL is captured in Islamabad, when Sheikh Khalid is captured in Islamabad (by ISI because they needed money at the time). Pakistan Army is a state within a state, it is a treat to the global peace and the sooner the world realises it the better. ISI is a criminal Syndicate and it is time to dismantle it, it has the support of the Wahabies and drug money from the Opiums in poor Afghanistan. Pakistan wants to keep the flames of fire flaming in Afghanistan for its benefits. Should Taliban come back to power in Afghanistan there would be more 26/11s in India and there is a prospect of war with India, so the sooner the Obama Administration do something about it the better the world would be.

      Just a point to ponder:

How many American soldiers were killed in Iraq? Around 4500.
Who sent them there to be killed, and for what?
People who can send their soldiers to die uselessly in an illegal war, how much, do you think, they care for the life of their own people? (I am not counting Iraqi loss of life)
If you are convinced that they don't care much then is it not possible that they might have killed another few thousands on 9/11?

Masud, welcome to your reality: Being a policeman is a ridiculous job in Pakistan. Police officers have for long been scorned by the society, viewed as part of an inefficient, ineffective and corrupt system. Some police officers have also been known to aid warring gangs in major metropolitan cities like Karachi and do more harm than good. It is not the most lucrative job to assume either. Police officers earn meager salaries but are expected to honestly perform their duties without accepting any bribes or adopting other unfair means of income. However, recent killings and acts of violence have swung public sympathies in favor of the police force. Pakistan’s policemen battling terrorism are faced with an unprecedented threat. Largely untrained in counterterrorism operations, Pakistan police is up against Taleban and other local militant groups.
The enemy is determined and often resorts to suicide missions to cause civilian deaths, spread panic or expose claims by security agencies of ensuring foolproof security arrangements. While no region remains safe for the police officers on duty, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province remains the most dangerous. Last year, more than 24 policemen in the province lost their lives in line of duty. Recently, local militants scored a major victory by assassinating Pakistan’s chief of counterterrorism operations in Karachi. The death of Chaudhry Aslam, one of Pakistan’s most decorated officers, has sown fear among ordinary citizens who are concerned about the hapless response by police after such violent attacks. The martyred officer had played a lead role in foiling several terror attacks and nabbed key members of terrorist networks in Karachi. While the government continues to applaud police for thwarting terrorist attacks across the country, it needs to make a sincere effort in ensuring that sacrifices of these brave men do not go in vain. The authorities must chalk out an anti-terrorism strategy and take a firm stance on whether peace negotiations will be pursued with the militants. A well-defined national security policy must clearly state the role to be played by police and then equip them with the necessary skills and resources to diligently perform their duties. To be fair, the police should only be responsible for supporting the military in counterinsurgency operations. The main responsibility of police lies in protecting civilian lives and property by maintaining law and order in the country.
The government also needs to strongly follow up on the cases of slain policemen by bringing the militants and criminals to justice. A weak response by the government has dampened morale of the police force, which often finds itself ill-equipped or heavily outnumbered in the face of threats. A demoralized police force would lack the will to put its life in danger to protect ordinary citizens. Political intervention in the working of police department is known to have hampered its performance. By removing the political clout and recruiting honest officers, the government can improve law and order situation in the country. It would also help in abolishing certain “no-go areas” within large metropolitan cities and restore the confidence of civilians in security agencies of Pakistan.

I cannot disagree with a single word that you said above. But the story of our bleak and pathetic situation is long and more complex and convoluted than apparently seems. It is the story of betrayal by our so called leaders – military and civilian – and external forced who appointed and supported those leaders to advance their geopolitical agenda. But you are right, ultimately we are responsible as nation whatever ills we suffer from. But believe me as a nation we have no love for any terrorist organisation or its activities, and as you rightly pointed out we are ourselves victims of terrorism, internal as well as external.
Eliminating us all, you think world would be a better place? Go on then.

Masud, have you watched "The hunt for Bin Laden"? It is a superb show, done by PBS. I learned a lot from that awesome program. Bin Laden was identified by a Pakistani and located in Abbottabad. This was reported to the CIA, who then video taped his compound for months, before the US sent stealth helicopters in, that finally killed him. It is just a matter of time before Zawahiri meets the same fate. Maybe his compound id being video taped at this very moment....... :)

Of course thier goverment Knows wherew he is. Many people idalize him. As I would if I had his faith.... I agree that the muslim theory is 1000's years old.... Hence the reason to appr. it even more..... Yes as it is with any "goverment" or nation they rise and fall....... But as a hole Muslims have grown....... Whats wrong with a nation that want to protect thier values of old...... The jewish community does hear in America.. The mormons have cherished thier views of old for centuries on in......... Why cant the Muslims... Probally cause they are opposed to American views....... Either way they deserve respect.......

US and NATO hasn't failed in Afghanistan. recent presidential election witnesses the success for peace and stability.
i agree to Gall about Pakistan.
for last few decades Pakistan is acting as a paid terrorist, Pakistan is using religious beliefs as weapon. whatever terrorist activity is happening in Afghanistan against the ISAF and Afghan Governemtn is planned and executed by Pakistan.
Unfortunately the International community including US and NATO is ignoring Pakistan's such hostility. the International community should impose economic sanctions against Pakistan, so that Pakistan doesn't remain a threat to International peace.
