How U.S. is lagging on quality of life

Fareed speaks with Michael Porter, a professor at the Harvard Business School, about a groundbreaking new Social Progress Index – and how the United States is lagging on many indicators. Watch the video for the full interview or on GPS this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

You were shocked at what you learned about America.

Yes, I think this wasn’t the picture of America that I think many of us Americans have – that we are a leader, a social leader, that we've advanced the ball in terms of opportunity and the needs of our citizens. And it shows anything but that.

So if you look at the Social Progress Index, on the whole, what's striking is the top countries are New Zealand, Switzerland, Iceland, these small countries. But basically then a lot of European countries and Canada beat the United States.

Correct.

The United States is 16, Ireland is ahead of it, Japan is ahead of it, Britain is ahead of it, Germany is ahead of it.

Yes.

What does that tell us? What does that measure?

So this effort tries to really, for the first time ever, take let's call it the social or community or quality of life dimensions of a society, and capture those in a rigorous measurement framework – using the best data available in the world. That's the best and objective measures of these various multiple things. But of course, social progress is a broad concept.

Right. And that's where you break it down into these subcategories. Health and wellness, Japan is number one, Italy is number two, Switzerland is number three. You have to go all the way to 70 to get to the United States.

It's an area where the U.S. – if you actually look objectively, we're just not delivering. We actually spend the most money on this of any country in the world, probably in all of recorded history, in terms of our health care budget every year. But in terms of the actual outcomes – and by the way, the Social Progress Index measures the outcomes you achieve, not how much you spend, not how much you care, not whether you have a big heart…

If you really want to know what's wrong in this country, the discussion thread of any article like this on CNN.com tells the story. BOTH parties are held hostage by their extremists, who take delight in nothing so much as belittling one another's intelligence whilst claiming that everyone else's inability to see the one true path, as defined by their party, is what is leading us to ruin. In short, if, when asked about the nation's problems, your reaction is to point your finger across the isle, you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. And the rest of us would be better off without you.

What has really hurt America is the simple and sad fact, that over the last 30 years, approx 7000 American CEO's gave away approx 50 million jobs to Asia, on a silver platter, with out even a fight, and nobody did anything about it. This is what has caused the rise of Asia and the fall of America. The GOP solution was to pass an 800 billion dollar jobs bill, but what the heck has it done? nothing! They put CEO traitors like Jeffrey Immelt at the head of this jobs team. yeah right. He is the key person that has given GE jobs to Asia in the 10's of thousands! You put the fox in charge of the chicken coop? again! What we really needed was to invite 50 CEO's who were most responsible for giving our jobs away to Asia, onto a stage in a huge auditorium, and have very smart Americans, who have recently lost their jobs to Asia, to pepper these guys with questions, with TV cameras running, so that all of us could watch, and learn. We need to find real solutions to the jobs situation. 800 billion dollar bills that do nothing only adds to our national debt, as if that was not high enough already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can anyone post something without making it political? Can anyone use their own personal opinion? Can anyone look at the facts and make a judgement based on whats best for the country and not their political interest?

Your all a bunch of political fools! More than likely you were brought up in your family to support a certain political party and not having the choice of your own. Guess what? Your a big boy / big girl now and you can make your choice.

Every two and four years I vote for the best Man / Women for the position. I looks at the facts, what has been accomplished, and what the runners have to say. I will never go in and vote straight accross one party

Its funny that we complain about our country. No country in the history of civilization has cured more disease, allowed more freedom of religion, had more peaceful turnovers of power, and educated more of its masses, in such a relatively short period of existence. As a dedicated teacher, I can tell you that the answer does not lie in more of anything. Until people start to truly take advantage of what they already have, there is no point in spending more. its is really ironic that we are spending more and more on special education than we are the best and brightest students. Money is constantly being dumped into programs to fight "autism" (look up the state definition), which is essentially a very large babysitting program, while the students with the most potential to succeed are left to fight over the dregs. The teachers unions do everything they can to support this system by requiring the lowest teacher/student ratios in the lowest performing classes, with students that give little or no return. Our classrooms are full of students that refuse to recognize the importance of the education that is already being offered. This is constantly being re-enforced at home. I see everyday, students on welfare, carrying high tech equipment and wearing expensive clothing, while still receiving free lunch. I also see hundreds of students per year pushed into unrealistic debt, to go to "college" only to drop out because they no idea why they are there in the first place. As a first generation Caucasian American I took advantage of every opportunity offered, without expecting any free lunch; free public education, military service w/GI bill, and working my ass off. I now live a fairly comfortable life, that was created without the use of any special benefits or programs. Why can I not expect the same of everyone around me? How is it that my 18 year old daughter cannot get any help to go to college, or than student loans, while her classmates of special status will be getting a free education by skin color?

Very good comment. America has become a nation of spoiled brats. period. This explains the out-of-control behavior among our student population and it even explains the bizarre behavior among our politicians. The 5 D's: divorce, drugs, debt, decadence, deception have seriously infected us. Think about it. As if alcohol and nicotine were not bad enough, in terms of how they negatively impact our health. Now it is becoming popular to make marijuana legal for recreation. excuse me! This can only increase our slide downhill. No child left behind was an 80-20 solution for a 20-80 problem. Meaning that only 20% of the problem was kids with autism and ADHD issues, but 80% of available resources were thrown at it. Huge mistake! This was at the expense of our superior kids. So the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs were left to fend for themselves, out in the cold. Sad. This can only hurt America in the long term. On some issues about race & skin color, I do not agree with you. I am a first generation Iraqi American. My parent's country was bombed to smithereens by America, for trumped-up reasons! The cradle of civilization was destroyed by American bombs! I am also a student of history. Since 1492 AD, people of European descent have sailed to every non-white nation, and murdered and thieved from them, ruled over them, berated them, cheated them, spat on them, destroyed them, controlled them. Aren't you ashamed of the behavior of your ancestors? The civil rights legislation, equal rights amendment, was a small attempt to right some very serious wrongs. Read up on history before you "cry" about how badly white people are being treated. It was primarily white CEO's that have given away 50 million American jobs to Asia, so that they could get richer. Greed is not good, no matter what Michael Douglas said..........

Mustafa, you are stereotyping. I'm caucasian, yet it wasn't "I" who bombed anyone. I didn't do anything, so how is it that minorities of TODAY get all of these financial benefits, yet caucasians are left to their own devices when it comes to education. I bet you didn't realize the amount of caucasians that do not get a job, even if they are more qualified, because the company was required to fill a minority slot. It has happened to me, and the recruiter told me everything because she was furious. I can understand the way you justify your thoughts, but you should be able to see things from the other side also.

I have relatives that live in Birmingham, UK. Let me enlighten you about the June 2012 riots in Birmingham, just to give you an idea about how crazy the world has become. In June 2012, over 1500 white British kids (ages 15-25) had to be arrested by primarily white British cops (because, just like America, 90% of the police departments and fire departments have white employees.......... hmmmmmmmmm, I wonder why?) for vandalism, looting, larceny and hooliganism, as they ran yelling through the streets of Birmingham, breaking the glass on storefronts and burning shops, primarily owned by non-whites, who were primarily very very good and hard-working people. My uncle owned one such store. When asked why they did it, most of those white British kids, who had been watching too much (Fox News equivalent TV) racist British TV channels, said it was because they felt that 'those damn foreigners" had too much and were too successful.......... whereas they were uneducated and unemployed.......... it brings new meaning to the phrase "white trash", don't you think?????? So please pardon my for having the opinions that I believe in..........

Sure, we're truly wonderful in a lot of ways. But this study is accurate – if you travel at all and know the world. Just sit at home and listen to Fox and hateradio, you probably won't consider the possibility that we're off track.

And the quality of life will get worse when the Rs take over completely, as is likely in this upcoming election cycle. They actively work for a Survival of the Fittest – the Law of the Jungle ethos for America. The road to perdition. Or to a jungle.

Just look at what those cretins in Georgia did with guns yesterday. Guns allowed in bars! In schools! On that subject ALONE, there's a pretty good indicator of the accuracy of the study cited in the article. Good grief.

Fox news and hateradio, as you call them, have been teaching the uneducated white people to hate the non-white people of America, for over 10 years now.......... NOBODY is strongly objecting to it............. sickening............ 😦 And on the issue of GUNS............ you have absolutely nailed it, yet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! America is awash with guns, and the gun lobby hides behind the second amendment, while bullets kill innocent kindergartners............. and nobody really does anything about it............... beyond sickening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you live in a country where both halves the population spend 80% of their intellectual, spiritual, and financial energy trying to one-up or just flat out destroy the "other side" how can you expect anything different? While all countries have conservative/liberal leanings... Among world leaders, the US makes divisiveness it's own art form.

I think the problem is that many Americans forgot where they came from. The fact the U.S. became such a global leader was because it took the best things of Europe and created a melting pot out of all these (mostly) European cultures.I could be wrong but I think the USA has more people of Swedish ancestry then actual Swedes live in Sweden , so how can the U.S. not take the lessons from these societies and cultures and make them their own? You dont have to reinvent the wheel. You lost much of your traditional ties to Europe lost the abi.ity of speaking multiple languages. The USA used to be the most multilingual countries in the world because of all tbese European immigrants.

It is probably a human failing to look about another group of people or a nation in a stereotypical manner. A good example is how Americans seem to view Muslims. After 9/11, there were millions of phone calls made to FBI from Americans who just happened to have a Muslim living next door to themselves and they thought that they were terrorists! The US government had to actually put out a memo to all Americans, telling them not to be so "stereotypical" in their judgement of all Muslims, and that 99% of them were totally harmless, benign, nice, folk! Similarly, many people have observed America's behavior, since WWII, and have come to some stereotypical conclusions. The Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the financing of (and CIA involvement in) covert wars in Nicaragua, the Balkans War, the Afghanistan War, the Iraq War........... my God, that is quite a long list of Wars, in which America has a hand that is dripping with blood....... so please forgive the billions of people (including myself) who look upon America as trying so desperately to come across as nice guys who like to vacation and smoke a little pot.......... but who also have this ugly side of being involved in too many wars.......... and meddling in way too many internal affairs in way too many nations............ America's hard earned stereotype...........

Thanks Ms chrissy. Here is a thought. Instead of America being the world leader in the largest number of wars that any nation on earth has been involved in, over the last 100 years, how about America move towards the world leader in the largest number of peace & love & sharing & caring movements that any nation on earth has been involved in, over the NEXT 100 years........ now there's a beautiful way to forgive and heal........... but to make that reality, we have to dis-empower 30% of the US economy ie: the MIC = military industrial complex, aka: America's killing machine.......... and therein lies the rub........ 😦

One way to get America to back down on its huge military spending and war mongering presence on this planet, is to prove that its so-called arch enemies really aren't as "arch" as we think they are. Look at me!!! I am a muslim. I live in California. I am not the enemy. I love America. I have kids that are growing up American too. I want America to succeed too. Its just the war mongering thing that bothers me about America. Most muslims think like me. America can help muslims like me to educate the extremist nutcase muslims to back down also. That's the MUCH more intelligent way to do it, yes??????? So if we can get past Putin, as all his crap, America really has no "arch" enemies.......... so then they can wind down all the MIC crap that they don't have the money for anyway, yes????????

America's response to the 9/11 attacks was an 80-20 solution to a 20-80 problem. Management guru Peter Drucker will surely agree with me. What do I mean by that? Over the last 20 years, "king" America has been assailed by 2 so-called enemies. Muslim extremists were just 20% of the problem. Superb high-paying American jobs going to Asia, was 80% of the problem. With 80% of our politicians possessing either a law degree or a political science degree, they had absolutely no clue how to solve either problem. So when 9/11 happened, ignorance and lethargy was replaced by a "call to arms"....... and so 80% of our resources got allocated towards fighting the "war on terror".......... Big Mistake......... because now 80% of available resources were being spent on 20% of the problem. And with Halliburton Director, Dick Cheney, as Secretary of Defense, the fox was indeed watching the hen house, and so instead of 500 billion dollars getting spent on the Iraq War, 3 trillion dollars got wasted on it! Just ask Joe Stiglitz, he even wrote a superb book about it! Meanwhile, the incompetents in charge had no clue how to stop the exodus of our jobs to Asia. As so we have a rather forlorn "king" today, with no money in the kitty, confused, lost and still incompetent, but sitting on over 5000 rusting nuclear weapons. Not a good situation..............

Very interesting points Mustafa. I am a white American who loves his country. However, I see many problems and you highlighted a few. I agree we have spent far too much $ in the war against terrorism. Although I am completely onboard with going after these extremists, too much $ has been wasted. Particularly in Iraq. That comment is in no way meant to disrespect the men and women who serve in our military. My heart aches every time we lose a soldier overseas. I cant help but think of all the things we could have done with that $ to better our country.

Thanks Randy Spear. I am an Iraqi American who loves America also, because it was forcibly made into my newly adopted country because America bombed the crap out of my parent's country........ 🙂 What has always amazed all the people on planet earth, other than Americans, is the fact that 17 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi Nationals, but just because America buys so much oil from Saudi, and Saudi buys so much military hardware from America, the relationship was just too cozy to upset in any way........ so Iraq had to pay the price for this??????????

        April 23, 2014 at 6:56 pm |
      • Mustafa ZulfuqurAli

Here is another thought, Randy Spear. Every time America bombs the crap out of a country, millions of people (the ones that were lucky enough to not be hit by a bomb!) from that country are forced to flee............. weeeeeelllllllll........... guess where more than half of them flee to????????? A possible "real" solution? Has anybody noticed how Germany has been "bucking" the negativity in Europe? Well, her name is Angela Merkel. She has a PhD in Physics. Can we Americans get a clue? Politicians with law degrees and political science degrees and hollywood backgrounds, have had enough decades to screw things up for America, don't you think? How about we figure out how to find a few human beings of the quality and caliber of an Angela Merkel. Honest, simple, smart as hell, does not put up with crap, get's things done. period. If we have to go to Lawrence Livermore Lab to hire a PhD in Physics, to be our President, then let's do it, without further delay, and before it's too late! Depending on Hillary Clinton or Bobby Jindal to pull our tractor out of this quicksand, at this precarious point in our history, would be another humongous mistake indeed............... 😦

Here is an even better idea.......... is there a way we can figure out, how to boot every single one of the obviously incompetent nutcases in the Senate and Congress (at the State and Federal levels) that have those "oh so awesome" law degrees and political science degrees, and replace every single one of them with super-smart Americans, of all races and religions, that have degrees such as: PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, MD........... that would put 750 folk of the caliber of Angela Merkel in charge of America............. wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that would make a HUGE difference.............. and we, the American people, would never ever regret it........... 🙂 It has been my observation, that the guys and gals with the REAL matsi, the REAL muscles between their ears, end up getting such an aforementioned education............ in history, brains have always triumphed over brawn.......... so let's think BRAINS, when we elect our next round of leaders............. 🙂 Silicon Valley California is brimming over with such super-smart people.............. what a paradigm shift for America............ if we could let the super-smart lead us, instead of letting the super-rich deceive us................

@ Mustafa, if our POTUS or king as you call him is "incompetent" its simply because he has not been affordee the "team" that ALL other presidents have had! Meaning that useless group of high end welfare recipients known by many as Congress! Perhaps they could all be charged with treason, as they do NOT act in the best interest of THIS country or the citizens. If it were up to me i would say...get em on that one way flight to Mars!!!!
