Who lost Iraq? The Iraqis did, with an assist from George W. Bush

By Fareed Zakaria

The turmoil in the Middle East is often called a sectarian war. But really it is better described as “the Sunni revolt.” Across the region, from Iraq to Syria, one sees armed Sunni gangs that have decided to take on the non-Sunni forces that, in their view, oppress them. The Bush administration often justified its actions by pointing out that the Shiites are the majority in Iraq and so they had to rule. But the truth is that the borders of these lands are porous, and while the Shiites are numerous in Iraq — Maliki’s party actually won a plurality, not a majority — they are a tiny minority in the Middle East as a whole. It is outside support — from places as varied as Saudi Arabia and Turkey — that sustains the Sunni revolt.

If the Bush administration deserves a fair share of blame for “losing Iraq,” what about the Obama administration and its decision to withdraw American forces from the country by the end of 2011? I would have preferred to see a small American force in Iraq to try to prevent the country’s collapse. But let’s remember why this force is not there.

I disagree, chrissy. Although I hate his using that filthy Tea Party lingo, I, too, totally agree with sandstorm as he tells it like it is.

Are you admitting to being as big of a racist bigot as sandstorm?
        Interesting.

If you are looking for WMD, try following the trail out of Iraq to Syria. War is an extension of politics through other means. (Quotable dead Prussian). This is an ultra complex environment. The continual push to lay down blame is killing us as a nation. While the world is burning, we are busy pointing fingers at each other, instead of uniting as is our name sake: the United States of America. Things have obviously changed for the worse. It is more important to be politically correct than it is to understand we are in a fight for the survival of our nation. What happened to taking responsibility for your actions? It's so easy to blame, it's much more difficult to take appropriate action to make a difference. The true measure of a person or a nation is how you pick yourself up from a fall. We have lost our way and it may be too late to make a
    difference.

Wrong, retired Military. We as a nation haven't been in a fight for survival since 1815 when the British threatened us with foreign rule. The closest we came to that was in WW2.

It's ironic that your post was at 9:11. That should help you figure things out.

I am pretty sure forums like this are intended for intellectual discussion and debate, not personal attacks. Those who cannot hold a legitimate discussion should go back to mindless entertainment like most network TV programming.

Thank you, Retired Military. I fully agree. CNN needs to ban this name thief from this website, too. Like you said, this joker has nothing intelligent to say!

@retired military. So true. You have these clowns like banasy, George Patton, and Joseph McCarthy slandering and attacking other bloggers who disagree with them.
These clowns have got to go.

Thank you, stuart. I'm sick and tired of this idiot who posts his senseless, right-wing posts under other peoples' names, especially mine in order to be funny on this web page. This individual tries to make a joke out of everything that comes up, especially war where people get killed and maimed! Evidently, nothing can be done about it.
