Brzezinski: Netanyahu 'making a very serious mistake'

Watch"Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

Fareed speaks with former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski about Israel's military operation in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on CNN told Wolf Blitzer that the invasion of Gaza was a strategy to demilitarize Gaza, explaining the use of force. But it has been quite a robust use of force…Do you think that it is going to succeed, the Israeli strategy?

No, I think he is making a very serious mistake. When Hamas in effect accepted the notion of participation in the Palestinian leadership, it in effect acknowledged the determination of that leadership to seek a peaceful solution with Israel. That was a real option. They should have persisted in that.

Instead Netanyahu launched the campaign of defamation against Hamas, seized on the killing of three innocent Israeli kids to immediately charge Hamas with having done it without any evidence, and has used that to stir up public opinion in Israel in order to justify this attack on Gaza, which is so lethal.

I think he is isolating Israel. He's endangering its longer-range future. And I think we ought to make it very clear that this is a course of action which we thoroughly disapprove and which we do not support and which may compel us and the rest of the international community to take some steps of legitimizing Palestinian aspirations perhaps in the U.N.

Brezinski is a Jimmy Carter Crackpot , as far as Netanyahu , he's the right man for the right time , he simply KNOWS , what anyone who can read knows , Hamas has only ONE GOAL , and that is to destroy Israel and kill Jews -PERIOD. It is written clearly in the covenant The Hamas Charter as well as The Palestinian National Charter . The only disagreement between Fatah and Hamas is the time frame and method in which this is to be done .
Comparisons to Hitler come mainly from uninformed morons and Jew haters .
Israel will not bare it's neck for the sake of a world opinion that would see her destroyed anyway . So all of you "bloggers " and that's all you are , can spew your ignorance all you want , Israel will survive , it will do what it must to survive , and that ,regardless of anyone's opinion or bias . The Palestinians are motivated by hatred and religious invective , the Israelis are motivated by survival , which is the superior of the two. And across all Party lines here in the US , over 75% of Americans support Israel , because they know it is the right thing to do .Hamas initiated this war , and have not by any stretch of the imagination have they gained a thing , other than getting their fellow Palestinians killed and Gaza's infrastructure destroyed . Now when all the "sympathetic money " comes pouring in from the west , instead of building TUNNELS and buying WEAPONS , Hamas will be forced to use that money to rebuild what they caused to be destroyed .

@jimmyd6559, that is a lie. No one has called for killing of Jews, just the destruction of the Jewish state. And all religious Jews also call for the same destruction of the state of Israel, because it violates everything Judaism stands for. Israel must be abolished because it is criminal and illegally denied the indigenous people of their rights. Jews in Jerusalem lived under Palestinians rule for about 2000 years, and there was never any hatred by Palestinians toward Jews. Just deserved hatred towards European invaders who are not even really Jewish.

Zbiggy and Peanuthead have been wrong on every issue whether they comment together or alone. The Peabrained one is planning to speak at a fundraising event for a Hamas front organization despite Hamas being listed by the US State Department as a Terrorist Organization.

The Pole and the Goober are out-and-out anti-Semites and that has been shown both in office and after. I'd include before, but they were both so obscure I doubt anyone could find a public pronouncement by either on any subject

        Qur'an 5:14
"From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We made a covenant, but they forgot and abandoned a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, stirred up enmity and hatred among them to the Day of Doom. Soon will Allah show them the handiwork they have done."

        Qur'an 5:73
"They are surely disbelievers who blaspheme and say: 'God is one of three in the Trinity for there is no Ilah (God) except One, Allah. If they desist not from saying this (blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall them – the disbelievers will suffer a painful doom."

        Qur'an 5:77

As for one who disbelieves, we will fight him forever in the Cause of Allah. Killing him is a small matter to us."

"Then fight (Muhammad) in Allah's Cause. Incite the believers to fight with you."

"Believers, when you go abroad to fight wars in Allah's Cause, investigate carefully, and say not to anyone who greets you: 'You are not a believer!' Coveting the chance profits of this life (so that you may despoil him). With Allah are plenteous spoils and booty."

JimmyD I support much of what you say and the spirit of your letter, but respectfully disagree with a few points:
1-I'm not a big fan of Netanyahu. I particularly oppose his and Likud's policy of building more housing tracts on the West Bank because this backs Israel in a corner, is politically costly, and creates structures and lives which may be uprooted in the near future. 2-Many [most?] Palestinians are dominated by hate but what they want most of all is an independent country. When they get that, and have more to lose, their hatred for Israel may wane in time. 3-Hamas will NOT use the sympathy money they get now to rebuild. As always, they will divert it to rearming, again. The key is the West Bank. Give the Palestinians more viability there and they will eventually look more to their self-interests than to their hatred.

JimmyD is totally correct. Zbig must have stopped reading the papers. Hamas tried to overthrow the PA. they were doing a coup in the West Bank that was intercepted. Hamas had all arranged a mass murder in a Kibbutz for Jewish New Year and the big HAMAS man in Turkey (Arouri) publicly admitted to planning the kidnap and murder of the Three Israeli – one US Citizen – teens.
The only things Netanyahu did wrong was wait to attack and not being prepared to finish the job once he started.
The correct move now is to train train train for the ground offensive with the goal of literally wiping out Hamas and then attack on Israel's timetable and on Israel's terms.

The murder of the 3 Israeli 'settlers' should have been treated as nothing more than what it was.. a Criminal Act. The Israeli authorities have informants all over Gaza and have acknowledged that they had plenty of information regarding the culprits. Instead they threw over 60 Israeli kids their deaths.. SAME as 911 when the USA threw over 6K servicemen/women to punish Iraq for something they had nothing to do with.

Excellent response! It is amazing how these armchair pontificators imagine they know better than the people on scene. When you look at where trouble exists around the globe, it is amazing to note the high correlation with Muslim peoples. This is a fundamentally flawed religion of intolerance, and has been since 600 A.D. at its very inception!, with Mohammad himself charging across the Middle East with his band of "believers" beheading all the "non-believers" (the so-called infidels)! Yes, this barbaric practice has been their M.O. since the beginning!

And, they insist on extreme intolerance, primitive tribal customs (Sharia law -really!?), and extreme violence to this day! As noted in this e-mail, Hamas *is* a terrorist group and foists terror on its own people as well -rounding up people in the street and shooting them in summary executions!! This behavior cannot be tolerated by *any* civilized society! Western democracies need to wake up and "grow a pair". Gaza needs to be immediately demilitarized, and the leaders of Hamas arrested and tried not only for crimes against Israelis, but HORRIBLE crimes against their own people. Ban Kee Moon and the leadership of the UN is pathetic!!

Any moderates in Gaza wouldn't dare to oppose Hamas in any way, as this would be a sure death sentence, or a very long stay in a dark, dirty prison for as long as the so-called leadership wished. Once demilitarization occurred Israel would surely ease restrictions on the Gazans, and they might actually be able to build a decent life for themselves. All the elements are there: good climate, beachfront property, arable land etc. All this potential is wasted by the PLO & Hamas expropriating the funds given by the West, and Arab governments as well, to enrich the leadership by many $100'sM, and also spend vast sums on military infrastructure with schools, mosques, and women and children as defensive shields – the Gazans are clearly viewed as expendable by the Hamas leadership.

I echo others here. Time and evidence have proven Brzezinski wrong on this; the kidnappers/killers have admitted they were funded and organized by Hamas. Hamas has since also admitted its involvement. So what is the point of yahoo publishing an interview with Brz whose entire thesis, that Netanyahu launched the Gaza offensive based on trumped up charges against Hamas "with no evidence" is wrong, wrong, wrong.
And, what about the tunnels into Israel? The co-ordinated use of those to attack and kidnap Israeli civilians was planned to occur just 2 months later. What about the constant rocket fire? When is 3000+ rockets not enough to justify self-defence?
If Israel is isolating itself, that says more about the free world–yes Europe and US–than it says about Netanyahu.
This isn't about Palestinian statehood: it's about terrorism, plain and simple. Problem is, when it is the Jewish state that is the victim of terrorism, it just doesn't have the same impact.
As for Brz, I think he should go back into retirement.

    • Kirk Augustin

@GC, The tunnels were not used until attacked, so obviously were a needed defense. It was Israel that started this wave of violence by failing to release all the hostages, and then illegally arresting over 350 more. The rocket have always only been fired in defense, and if there were justice, a thousand times more rockets would be fired, until Israel followed the law, allowed the right of return, and vacated all the occupied territory they are stealing.

      • jwhitewater

asserting that the tunnels were defensive or weren't used until they were attacked is an outright lie. More than a dozen of them ran underneath the Israeli border, and several of them were used by Hamas members to stage attacks inside Israel.

firing rockets at civilian centers is in no way "resisting" anything or "defending" anything. they're just plain war crimes.

Brezinski has no credibility when it comes to Israel and the Middle East. His advice and opinions have been proven wrong long ago. He was the strongest critic of any Israeli action when he advised Carter and it's clear from their collective speeches and writings over the years that they are not only anti-Israel but Anti-Semites. Hamas in their charter not only calls for the destruction of Israel but also death to the Jews, not sure if Mr. Augustin is simply naïve or a radical Islamic apologist. With all the respect I have for Fareed, I find it hard to believe that he interviewed Brezinski regarding Netanyahu's strategy for Hamas and the Palestinians. My recommendation would be to find someone who is neutral and respected and not prejudiced the next time.

Looks like Brzezinski's anti-Semitic demons have him restless and having to let them out again. Just like his boss Jimmy Carter.

That's the main point. But I'll add: How does Mr. Brz "know" that Netanyahu has "no evidence"? That statement belies his own prejudice as much as anything. He could have said "I, Zbigniew, have not seen any evidence", but unless Israel shares its intelligence with him [ha!], he can't know what Netanyahu does or doesn't know. Never mind that a Hamas leader "confessed" to Hamas' role in the kidnapping/murders, even without that Brz reveals himself to be a lowlife bigot.

Of course, leave it to CNN to give this man an audience.

Journalists are not allowed to ask hard questions without loosing their jobs. Brave Jews that question the actions of their gov't are excommunicated and threatened. Professors are not spared and you can add celebrities and sport figures to their hit list. Brezinski is way off base here. It is not about Netanyahu or mistakes. Hamas is a lethal force bent on the destruction of Israel. They fired thousands of rockets and built a vast array of tunnels with specific plans to kidnap Israelis. They kidnapped and killed 3 Israeli citizens and partied in the streets. There was no condemnation from Hamas, let alone cooperation, in finding the murderers. The first and foremost responsibility of any head of state is the protection of its citizens lives. As such, Netantahu had no choice but to damage Hamas' infrastrucure and neutralize their ability to kidnap and kill Israelis.

They do not talk about Muslims killing more Muslims than Jews ever did in the history of the world...We Arabs are suffering from the mad and insane actions of fellow Muslims...We would much rather live and trust the Israelis. Every arab country kept us in refuge camps and denied us citizenship to make Israel look bad. Arab counties still torture my brothers and sisters. Over 70% of Palestinians still support Hamas who put rockets in our schools and hospitals. They are crazy just as Carter and Brezinski . When Jews were being killed in europe and placed into camps...other Jews didn't go o ut and kill innocent German children or shoot 10000 rockets into German cities like Hamas. Israael wants peace I know this. Only a tiny tiny tiny piece of land on the edge of the sea, smaller than New Jersey. and only 9 miles wide, is causing the hatred?????Are you kidding me ???Look at the animals in Syria, Iraq, Iran killing each other with chemicals, cutting off heads, putting bombs on animals children to blow up innocent people??Instead of building schools, hospitals and factories in Gaza they used the $ for only one stupid purpose...to destroy a little piece of land which does not belong to them to begin with
