Clinton: Settlement policy my biggest complaint with Israeli government

Fareed speaks with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about unrest in the Middle East. Watch the full interview on "Fareed Zakaria GPS," this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

Martin Indyk has just resigned as the kind of sherpa of the peace process. And he says that the immediate trigger, in his view – there were many – was the fact that the Palestinians looked at the Israeli continued settlement activity...

Right.

…and said these guys are not serious, we're never going to be able to get a state...

Right.

…look at what they're doing.

This is my biggest complaint with the Israeli government. I’m a strong supporter of Israel, a strong supporter of their right to defend themselves. But the continuing settlements, which have been denounced by successive American administrations on both sides of the aisle, are clearly a terrible signal to send if, at the same time, you claim you're looking for a two-state solution.

FRANCE is a great, peaceful, successful nation, because they have the great politician, strategist, peacekeeper, general Bonaparte NAPOLEON. Unfortunately, we have Ms.Hillary and can not be successful in anything. Please, Ms.Hillary, be fair and step down from politics.

France proudly preserves the integrity of its language and produces the world's greatest cuisine. The French citizens on the sidewalks of Paris are amazingly polite, behaving the way Londoners once did (before excessive immigration).

I wish people (Hillary especially!) would leave the Israelis alone. They live in danger day after day. Yes they may make mistakes while protecting their borders, but so have we. What person in thier right mind, being bombed from other countries, wouldn't be compelled to protect themselves. Israel has continued for any years to live peacably and Hamas and palkestinians have continued to destroy Israel any way they can. They're good at lies and deceit to reach thier goals and have proven over and over again they only want to kill and destroy Israel. Don't blame Israel for killing children. Blame Hamas!!!

You are 100% right – Hamas is from the political gutter, and delights in seeing Palestinians suffer and die for an anti-Israel photo op. I remain astonished at Israel's cautious and restrained approach – contrast the Syrian's regime's actions in that country's intra-Muslim war.

@ ricci...Israel's Netanyahu likes living with chaos. Thats why he invites it! Before Hamas he was trying to instigate Iran. And then he was trying to get the US to go to war with Iran! And its because of him pushing these illegal settlements in palestine that have instigated these conflicts presently. Hes like the playground bully that starts crying when all the kids on the playground finally band together and push back! Hard to feel sorry for him. The only difference between a bully and him is hes also using the Bible to manipulate everyone to feel sorry for him! Hes no better than a preacher using the fact that hes a preacher to scam money! A CON ARTIST!

The only reason Israel started the occupation of this land was because as soon as the palestinians moved in they began to attack Israel. It seems most people in America forget the things that happen more than just a few years ago.

Why do you think there are so many 'CON ARTISTS' who are out there "scaming money." Maybe it's because there were so many people who saught to destroy the laws and morals this country was built on. Thats what happens when you want to destroy the laws that hold a righteous country together. Do you really think this country is better off today than it was sixty, seventy or eighty years ago when people of America lived moral lives. Those 'CON ARTISTS' would've been run out on a rail back then.

As for the idea that Israel takes palestinian land, they only started doing this when the palestinians used this land as a springboard to attack Israel. Many people it seems tend to go brain-dead and forget history beyond a few years old. It was the palestinians who broke that deal years ago and attacked Israel. Israel has only defended themselves. The only course for Israel is to break Hamas. Who in his right mind thinks that Israel can just stand back and continue to knock down palstinian missles. Eventually they will run out of rockets to destroy hamas missles. Hamas has continually broken any deal to stop the fighting, just as they have always done. Their only goal is to destroy Israel!!! No one in his right mind can look at the history of this war and not see this. Don't let the lies Hamas is spreading overrule the truth. See Hamas for what it is. They put their own people in harms way just to get their own way. Ask yourself why they don't get their people out of harms way. They could have if they wanted to!!!

You're an idiot. Israel didn't exist until about 60 years ago, and it wasn't the Palestinians moving in, it was the Israelites moving in and displacing over 3/4s of the Palestinians living there at the time.
After WWII, the Zionist movement wanted a Jewish state, so the US and UN promised them Palestinian land, that wasn't theirs to give. Learn your history.

    And speaking of morals,

A horse and a chicken are playing in a meadow. The horse falls into a mud hole and is sinking. He calls to the chicken to go and get the farmer to help pull him out to safety. The chicken runs to the farm but the farmer can't be found. So he drives the farmer's BMW back to the mud hole and ties some rope around the bumper. He then throws the other end of the rope to his friend, the horse, and drives the car forward saving him from sinking! A few days later, the chicken and horse were playing in the meadow again and the chicken fell into the mud hole. The chicken yelled to the horse to go and get some help from the farmer. The horse said, "I think I can stand over the hole!" So he stretched over the width of the hole and said, "Grab for my pen-is and pull yourself up." And the chicken did and pulled himself to safety. Moral of the Story: If you're hung like a horse, you don't need a BMW to pick up chicks.

There once was a happy little fly buzzing around a barn one day when she happened upon a large pile of fresh cow manure. Since it had been hours since her last meal and she was feeling hunger pangs, she flew down to the irresistible delicacy and began to munch out.

    She ate.....

    and ate.....

    and then.....

    she ate some more!!!

Finally, she decided she'd had plenty. She washed her face with her tiny front legs, belched a few times, then attempted to fly away. But alas....she had pigged out far too much and could not get off the ground. She looked around wondering what to do about this unpleasant situation when she spotted a pitchfork leaning upright against the barn wall. She'd found a solution!! She realized if she could just become airborne she'd be able to fly again. So, she, painstakingly, climbed to the top of the handle. Once there, she took a deep breath, spread her tiny fly wings, and leaped confidently into the air. She dropped like a rock and splattered all over the floor.

The moral to this sad story?

"Never fly off the handle when you know you're full of crap."

@ ricci, its not moral to take peoples land just because you dont like what their doing on it now is it? And Hamas isnt suffering, the palestinian civilians that are suffering. And this wouldnt be happening if Israel hadnt been keeping these people impoverished! And they had no right to do that. All my life ive been taught that Israel was the "holy land" and now they act as if they're the spawn of satan! Committing unholiest acts!

Indeed chri§§y, with all the civilian deaths caused by relentless bombing and shelling by IDF, you'd think that they're the most incompetent military in the world. 80% civilian deaths... Entire city blocks pulverized with their so called "Targeted bombing". Then they have the audacity to come out on TV (Netenyahu & Other Israeli officials) and blame Hamas' pathetic rockets and supply tunnels. If Israel ended the blockade, there wouldn't be any tunnels. If Israel stopped oppressing, occupying and dehumanizing the Palestinian people, then there wouldn't be any rockets.

Ferhat: Hamas is orchestrating a significant portion of civilian deaths. Hamas being responsible is a fact and all of the disingenuous postings about Hamas renouncing its Charter, and it's all Israel's fault, only brings your credibility into question. Are there collateral deaths in WAR- absolutely. That is an unfortunate fact. However, the high numbers are counter intuitive as Israel, much like the US, seeks to minimize collateral damage because we can and we deem it appropriate. Hamas and it's diabolical tactics of sacrificing Palestinian civilians for its stated goals of killing all Jews and destroying Israel, is behind the high civilian casualty rates. Israel will defend itself so that will not change. The use of overwhelming force is how Israel will destroy Hamas – that is war. Until Hamas loves peace more than they hate Israel, there will only be War and more deaths. Hamas will never be legitimate partners in peace because that is not what they want. Their Charter guides their actions. Hamas will only continue to attack Israel, so Hamas must and will be destroyed. Once Hamas is destroyed the Palestinians will have a true opportunity for peace. Palestinians will be able to rise above their internal oppressors (Hamas) who are bringing war destruction and death to the Palestinian people.

@Retired Military: Saying that Hamas is 'orchestrating' the civilian deaths is presumptuous (although I wouldn't put it past them) to say the least. There simply isn't any solid evidence of that other than the Israeli claiming it to be true. As for the Hamas charter, in 2010 Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal stated that the Charter was "a piece of history and no longer relevant". If their leader says it's no longer relevant, than it's no longer relevant. Whether you believe it or not, that's your own prerogative. My credibility isn't in question here. Rather, it's the credibility of the Israeli government. 80% civilian deaths cannot be simply dismissed as 'collateral'. Explain to me how Israel is 'minimizing' civilian deaths with such obvious disproportion? How can someone destroy Hamas? A democratically elected governing body? Do you truly believe that Hamas can be bombed out of existence? If so, you're deluding yourself, as time has proven over and over that you can't get rid of terrorists by force (case in point Al-Qaeda, Taliban, IS & pretty much any organization that has been tried to gotten rid of by 'destroying'). It never worked, it never will and it's counterproductive. War is not the answer. The feeling of hate between Hamas and Israel is mutual. There's plenty of hate to go around and it's not just Hamas doing the hating. Israel doesn't want peace either. If Israel was sincere in seeking peace, they would've stopped illegal settlements and acknowledge Hamas as a democratically elected government of the Palestinian people. So, no, you can't simply 'destroy' Hamas as long as the Palestinian people believe in Hamas and support it. As I said many times before, war is not the answer. Israel must end the occupation, subjugation, oppression, dehumanization and grant the Palestinian people the freedom they deserve. Only then will there be peace.

Ferhat: I greatly enjoy the dialogue and you craft a compelling message. However, as in many cases, we will have to agree to disagred on this issue as we see the "facts" differently. The point, counter point, is just a continuous spiral.

I can say that we do agree on the situation surrounding Putin and the Ukraine.

And @ Ferhat i totally agree! It sure makes people appear, ridiculous, when they believe Netanyahu's statements! I mean how many times can he get away with that crap? They shoot rockets into palestine and then every time they hit civilians he claims they were killed by rockets shot by hamas! If hamas is that bad of aim WHY is Israel even retaliating at all??? You might believe that story if it happened ONCE, but when thats the claim EVERY time, then you have to know its a lie! And thats breaking one of the 10 commandments right? You would also think the leader of the "holy land" would at least follow the 10 commandments wouldnt you? What a fraud!
