On GPS Sunday: Analysis on Ukraine, ISIS and the unrest in Pakistan

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

On GPS this Sunday: A special live start to the show, examining the two major crises that dominated the NATO summit this week: Russia in Ukraine and ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Then, Fareed looks at whether another crisis is brewing – in Pakistan. Another civilian government is teetering on the brink. Will a former cricket star (and his supporters) topple the government and send the nuclear-armed nation into turmoil again? Fareed speaks with Husain Haqqani, former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, and CNN security analyst Peter Bergen.

“We must understand that these protests and the turmoil they have generated is just the symptom of a deeper, deeper disease,” Haqqani says. “The disease is that Pakistan's military has ruled Pakistan for more than half its life as an independent country. And in the other half, when civilians are allowed to govern, the military wants control of foreign policy and security policy.”

Also, Fareed speaks with CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, about a new study suggesting that eating a low-carb diet is more effective not just for weight loss, but also for reducing your risk of heart disease.

wow, the truth really hurts! probably every single American will wince when they read this comment. at first, it seems facetious, but then, if we think about it, it is true. that's why it hurts so much. what's even more scary, is that we don't know how to stop the madness.

        @ Ann Dugger,
I do not agree with you that the comment by @ Thanks Fareed is "the truth."
It your personal truth is that dire, change your life on an individual bases. My life is good, and I live in the same country that you do.
Individuals can fix their lives on an individual basis. It's often called "personal responsibility."
The USA's government is not responsible for an individual's drug addiction, divorce, or poverty.

Mr. Fraschini, you sound like a rich, retired, American, comfortably sitting in his Country Club, sipping expensive wine, quite happy that your country is dropping millions of bombs on "other" people, over that pond yonder, just so that they don't bother you in the least. I am also a very successful American, living the Country Club lifestyle on the West Coast, with one difference. I took my blinders off long ago. Maybe you should try it. What our country has been doing in the arena of wars, covert operations, coups, underhanded murders, illegal entries into sovereign nations, rather concerns me. And I am not proud of it.

I have been closely following the sit-ins and the ongoing anti-government movement in Pakistan over the last 3 weeks, and what I heard today on CNN today had nothing to do with reality. This movement led by Imran Khan, an ex-cricketer and Dr.Qadri are stating that the elections in Pakistan were rigged and the leaders are corrupt and they have provided amply proof of these allegations. But, that is not why I decided to comment here in this blog, CNN is least concerned about the truth and simply created a completely new story which none of the local Pakistani new channels, nor anybody in Pakistan has ever talked about, which makes me think, CNN is not real news, but just a propaganda machine based on lies and fiction, where the intent is simply to mislead the general public.

For many years I found GPS to be a unique program providing real news and interviews with people making the news. However for the last few months Fareed has fallen into the same unfortunate routine as other programs, providing a forum for the same tired guests who have no actual knowledge of the facts on the ground. The panel at the beginning of today's program is a case in point.

Fareed, I had confidence in your truthfulness until you stated your considered conclusion as to why the Arabs/Muslims hate us. More than anything else, It is clearly our longtime, unfailing, and slavish support of Israel against the Palestinians, a recent example of which was our re-supply of Israel with ammunition after the recent massacre of Palestinian civilians, including hundreds of children, in Gaza. To seek another principal reason for Arab hostility to the United States is disingenuous and pandering to Israel. I am disappointed in you.

You have to bear in mind, that Fareed Zakaria, being a brown-skinned Indian Muslim, at a high position, with his own GPS show, on CNN, which is watched throughout the world, does have to be careful. There are "secret" powers within, that have daggers in their hands, that are determined to unseat him, if he talks too strongly against "them", even if it is the truth. The same "powers" that quietly fired Piers Morgan, and sent him packing back to England, all because he spoke out so courageously against the gun lobby. All that "freedom" of speech, we like to say that we have, is not so "free" after all.

    Fareed,
Thank you for your GPS attempt to bring US foreign policy into the living rooms of Americans and others in the world community. May I ask why there seems to be an assumption on the part of the Washington establishment the President Putin of Russia is seeking to expand Russian influence over the former Warsaw Pact countries, while we tend to downplay the central driving force of our own policy trying to extend US influence over these same countries? Since Kiev was the original capital of Rus 1,000 years ago, and four of the twelve hero cities of Russia in WWII are in Ukraine, one being Kiev itself and two others being in Crimea, couldn't one fairly conclude that that just perhaps there is more of an interest on the part of Russia in the fate of Ukraine than there is in the American play book?

Howard, actually, NO. If you go back to a more logical way of thinking, let's remember, the United States is a firm supporter of human rights. Russia is not. I hope you can grasp the idea here. What would have happened if Washington did not "extend any U.S.influence" in Europe during WWII?
1,000 years ago is ancient history, son. Kiev does not want Russia. They want democracy like the United States.

  16. War Mongers get to celebrate yet again!

The "killing machine" aka: war lobby, is so powerful, in Washington DC, that they actually got what they wanted out of a President (Obama) that is for peace, pulling America out of Iraq, and in a few months, Afghanistan. Yes, indeed, the US Government has just placed an order with Raytheon, in Goleta, California, for 1000 more Cruise Missiles. Sickening! The CEO of Raytheon was "caught" by the IRS, 4 years ago, for questionable transfers of funds thru the Cayman Islands, and several other Raytheon employees are still under investigation for tax evasion. In fact, these funds were detected within the Hard Drive of a computer, in a certain building, in the Cayman Islands, that a certain gentleman named Mitt Romney also has his account! How low have we sunk as a nation? Not only do these war mongers destroy humanity, murder human beings, and commit gross insults against Mother Nature, but they hide their millions in Caribbean Islands, so that they do not have to pay their fair share of taxes!

I am sure that if Mitt Romney has cheated on his taxes, the IRS will discover the deletion and send him a bill so you can get your check. If Mitt Romney committed a crime, charges will be brought against him.
Thank you for helping the IRS and the police.
Keep in mind, however, that earning millions of dollars is not illegal, and national defense is also not against the law. Even missiles are legal. I bet you didn't know that.

      • Joey Isotta-Fraschini©

        "Drone them," LaBella?
I didn't say that. You brought it up.
Since you did, yes, drones would be one way to maintain order, if policepersons cannot. Recently, the police have gotten lots of flack for their work.
I think that all policemen and all policewomen and whatever should wear videorecording equipment to protect law enforcement agencies from retribution.

        September 8, 2014 at 10:29 am |
      • LaBella

I never said you brought it up. I was referencing a particularly brutal solution that people brimg up as a way to keep these people from killing each other. Such as the fun people at Stormfront, for instance. Ignorant as all hell, because the solution to keep US citizens from killing each other isn't more killing. I see the desire for drones as a particularly bloodthirsty, albeit remote, way to keep someone's hands clean while dealing with "probl" gangs.
In other words, uber cowardly. Not surprised at all that so many are jumping in the "not MY neighborhood, no sir" bandwagon.
I find it pretty laughable that on one hand, people bemoan that our police are getting more militarized, and on the other, wish to drone people they consider unsavory.

I agree with personal videocams for all law enforcement.

        September 8, 2014 at 11:12 am |
      • LaBella

I agree with the videocams, but to document what goes on, not what they say went on.
This protects both the police AND the public.
If they refuse to wear a personal cam, one must question why.

There is too much there for me to read completely, but the posts I read were not from men or women likely to become deranged murderers in the style of Anders Breivik.
I did see that some writers at Stormfront oppose some groups to which I make donations, such as SPLC.

        September 8, 2014 at 1:16 pm |
      • LaBella

Joey, are you surprised that the SPLC might take them to task when their motto is "White Pride, Worldwide"? And Stormfront just might not appreciate general support with the SPLC?

There are too many blac ks in basketball teams. We also need more white people in the stands to cheer. They make more noise than the bla cks.

And you can write "blacks" without the space in between. It's not a dirty word.

I have black friends and black heros, George. But the blacks scare away the whites in basketball games. Too much hip hop and Gospel music. Good grief.
