Clinton: 3 lessons of the Ebola crisis

Fareed speaks with former U.S. President Bill Clinton about the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. Watch the full interview on "Fareed Zakaria GPS," this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

You’ve worked a lot on issues like disease prevention. What lesson do you think we should draw from this outbreak of Ebola and the speed and kind of pace with which it’s spread?  When you look at it, can you tell us about maybe the potential for pandemics or anything?

Well, first, like anybody else who's involved, we have a big presence in Liberia and three of our people, our top people, have stayed in Liberia to help organize the response. So we've all got to figure out, you know, how to coordinate it better. We're going to have a special session on it at CGI (Clinton Global Initiative).

But the lesson we should draw, the lessons are twofold. One is we have to do a much better job in building the health care infrastructure in these countries. We have to increase their capacity, including the capacity to have community health workers go out in these villages and have credibility with people. You know, this tragic story of the health workers being killed in Guinea, it's just terrible.  But if we have more capacity, we can deal with it quicker. So that’s the first thing.

The second thing is we're going to have to get quicker and nimbler at developing biomedical responses, you know, the vaccines or whatever, or cures.

And the third thing is the wealthy countries have got to reexamine how we fund the World Health Organization, because I think they do a marvelous job. But increasingly, as development ministries get more expertise in given areas, they want to fund specific projects in specific countries. And it's clear that the World Health Organization needs a pot of money that can be mobilized in a hurry for emergencies while we wait for the inevitable time delay when America and the U.K. and France and Scandinavia, we all kick in money.

One way to deal with it quicker would be to allow the human part of testing of newly created vacines to be done in the African countries. If those people agree, which im sure many of the infected ones would agree, at no cost to them as they cant afford treatment...then we would get closer to a cure maybe.

Aside from his philandering, Bill Clinton is a brilliant man. The wise listen to him; the foolish focus on the wrong things.

If he repents and stops his behavior, there is redemption and salvation. Does the Bible not teach that?

We should set out and provide clean sanitary practices through clean water and sewage treatment. This would improve the health more than all the resourses put into fighting disease in Africa.

I use great sanitary practices. I carry those compact moist tissues wherever I go. I floss everyday. And I shower with coconut oil. Yes, it makes me feel like a woman, but at least I'm clean.

True @ Allan, but in the meantime we should be doing something for those that are already infected. And it may end up helping all people everywhere. And as im sure youre aware we have issues in this country regarding sanitation and water! Like Detroit and california.

We humans as a species have a great arch-nemesis. No, it is not an asteroid or a comet, nor is it a bug that goes crawling in the night. The virus is one of the smallest organisms living on Earth, yet one of the most dangerous to mankind. Ebola is one of the deadliest viruses known to man with 90% mortality rate. But sometimes we see smaller outbreaks with less lethality that can cause just as much panic. We're seeing it right now in the US with the Enterovirus D68 which has caused no fatalities, but can be fatal to kids with asthma since this virus targets the lungs.. D68 is not a new virus, it was first discovered in 1968, yet it somehow managed to stay out of CDC's radar for so long, only to appear again and cause havoc among children set to go back to school. Viruses can catch us off guard and we must try to stay ahead of the game if we are to survive as a species.

Precisely @ Ferhat! But since the people that have been voted in to protect us and to speak for us, wish to kill off a large portion of the human race, by military means....its highly unlikely that they will do anything constructive to find a means to weaken the severity of this virus, or any other viruses!

This Ebola Epidemic has been going on since March of this year? Where have we (the U.S.) been? Just now we are looking at sending troops (3,000) and money to stop this disease. Why just now? Have we not been concerned about it until it struck down three Americans in West Africa? The United States should do more about stopping this disease before it takes us six or seven months too be concerned. The world Health Organization should have the resources it needs to fight diseases like this unless it's OK to watch them spread in Africa and ruin that continent.

I just ran across this little tid-bit on NEWSMAX and thought it might be of interest to ya'll :

There is a real possibility that Ebola could mutate into a virus that is as spreadable as the flu, one of the nation’s top Ebola researchers tells Newsmax Health.

“I don’t want to be an alarmist, but the possibility of Ebola becoming an airborne virus clearly has to be taken into account,” said David Sanders, associate professor of biological sciences at Purdue University.

"Ebola does share some of the characteristics of airborne viruses like influenza and we should not disregard the possibility of it evolving into something that could be transmitted in this way,” added Sanders, whose work on Ebola led to his participation in the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Biological Weapons Proliferation Prevention Program.

Anybody here didn't see this coming ?

Too bad the Supreme Court did not allow Surgeons General C. Everett Koop to quarantine the first 17 men in America diagnosed with the new AIDS virus back in 1979. About 2 million die each year from the wanton spreading of AIDS. MILLIONS of lives could have been saved.

Probably because C Everette Koop didn't become Surgeon General until 1982.

Loop was on a team of 300 doctors assigned by Reagan to investigate where AIDS came from. Loop recommended quarantining the 17 men who had been used as lab rats by the US congress funded Viral Cancer Research Project 1964-1979. His request was denied.
Now, AIDS has spread from those 17 lab rats all over the world. Roughly 2 million die of AIDS each year, and about 2% of US heteros now carry that dreaded sipervirus.
"AIDS was developed in a laboratory." – Dr. Alan Cantwell Jr.

1979 was the year that program stopped being funded by Congress, banasy.
Now, try responding to the thrust of my comment rather than nitwit picking it.
Have you ever even heard of the Viral Cancer Research Project 1964-1979, for example.

I know you don't like to be corrected, Philip on your nitwit mistakes.
And yes, I have heard about it it does't change the fact that you were wrong in your initial post about the Koop's Surgeon General tenure or the POTUS who appointed him.

And don't be ridiculous. Men get women pregnant and so are responsible before God for the life of the child. Unless you are in a satanic cult or simply do not believe in the bible Bill Clinton and GW Bush both swear by.
I never have understood how the same people that diss believers support politicians who are believers but never diss them. They only diss fellow citizens who are believers. Never politicians who are.
