Let's be honest: Islam has a problem today

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

By Fareed Zakaria

When television host Bill Maher declares on his weekly show that "the Muslim world...has too much in common with ISIS," and the author, Sam Harris (a guest on his show) concurs, arguing that "Islam is the mother lode of bad ideas," I understand why people get upset. Maher and Harris made crude simplifications and exaggerations.

And yet, they were also talking about something real. I know all the arguments against speaking of Islam as violent and reactionary. It is a vast world of 1.6 billion people. Places such as Indonesia and India have hundreds of millions of Muslims who don't fit these caricatures. That's why Maher and Harris are guilty of simplification and exaggeration.

But let's be honest: Islam has a problem today...There is a cancer of extremism within Islam today. A small minority of Muslims celebrate violence and intolerance, and harbor deeply reactionary attitudes towards women and minorities. And while some moderates confront these extremists, not enough do so and the protests are not loud enough. How many mass rallies have been held against ISIS in the Arab world today?

But now the caveat, Islam today, is important.

There are a few Muslims who have commented that they feel disheartened by the many ugly comments here, including those advocating genocide. I ask them not to be dismayed. These Islamophobic extremists are a relatively small proportion of the population, just vocal. I guess that they are seeking the same amount of attention that fringe groups like ISIS get. I ignore most of them because they are not interested in logical debate. In fact, their personal attacks betray their lack of character and judgment. However, it is important to speak out against Islamophibia and in a general way explain the true nature of Islam, so that the majority of decent Americans, who may not know much about Islam, are not misled by these disturbed individuals.

Also, I do feel that there is a small group of influential individuals who are not ordinary xenophobes like those on this thread, but are purposely engaging in demagoguery for political purposes. We need to shine daylight on these individuals so that they cannot continue their shameful work.

So continue to be active doing good works in your communities, both Muslim and non-Muslim, post polite comments at sites like this when you have time, and contribute to civil rights organizations like CAIR and to Muslim and non-Muslim charities. I have always thought that evil cannot last forever, and have been vindicated by events such as the end of apartheid. Islamophobia will also end, as long as we all, Muslim and non-Muslim, remain vigilant.

My wishes for peace, health, and happiness to everyone.

"I do feel that there is a small group of influential individuals who are not ordinary xenophobes like those on this thread, but are purposely engaging in demagoguery for political purposes."
There are also a small group of deniers such as yourself who engage in discussion for political purposes. But then, muslism always have had a hard time separating religion and politics.

"contribute to civil rights organizations like CAIR and to Muslim and non-Muslim charities."
You mean CAIR–the unindicted co-conspirator in funding terrorist groups like Hamas, and other muslim "charities" which are really fronts for creating madrasas or laundering money and supplies to extremists?

"Islamophobia will also end, as long as we all, Muslim and non-Muslim, remain vigilant."
Your perceived Islamaphobia will only end when muslims as a whole embrace peace for ALL religions and stop tacitly supporting the extremists who have hijacked your religion.
"it is important to speak out against Islamophibia"
You'd better serve your religion to speak out against the extremists who have hijacked it for their own political purpose.

Yes I agree with Fareed that Islam has more than a problem. Its a religion that has no room for other religion very violent and intolerant and I mean dangerous than anything human should accept as religion. The people that involved are violent and the preachers of Islam are war mongers, rapist and pig sh1t eaters..That is what ISLAM is..

The United Nations has 192 member states. 47 of them are Muslim ruled. In those in 13 of those 47 Muslim ruled countries the penalty for being openly Atheist or openly rejecting Islam is death. In 5 of those 13 countries, according to a Pew Research pole, the majority of population agree it is right and just to put people to death for their religious belief or non-belief.

Yes, Islam has a vicious problem.

I've read the Quran. It commands believers to take over the world in plain black and white. The goals of the jihadists and "moderates" are the same; only the means are different. The "moderate" Muslims pursue active policies of imigration and increased participation in government with the specific intent of gaining sufficient critical mass to impose Sharia law.

Islam is inherently more than a religion. It is inherently political, with specific political objectives. It does not command the entire world convert to Islam. It does mandate that all peoples be under the control of Islamic overlords, and that people who do not convert make specific concessions of subservience, such as additional taxes, to said overlords.

Naturally their are plenty of watered-down people who call themselves Muslims but disregard portions of the Quran. But the problem is, whenever Muslims have revival and go back to their scriptures, they find a manifesto of intolerance, oppression, and sanctioned predation toward all non-Muslims.

Look you people don't read the quran. You read what you want too read. here what you want too hear. Read chapter one, chapter two and three. This will tell you all you need to know about Islam, However if you go in with a closed mind you will miss the whole thing. Because the Quran don,t address Muslims it addresses Believer.

LOL at your comment – Good Muslim itself are contradictory words these days. I think we should learn from ISIS publication and use the same islamic theory – make enslaving infidels based on your religion – that would make ISIS considering the real interpretation of Islam. Start enslaving and find alternate to oil – ISIS will automatically become SISI...

Islam is a violent religion and it is not possible to turn Islam as a peaceful religion . We have to be more aggressive of dealing with radical Islam .we use Israel methods for bombing radical Islam strong hold. otherwise the cancer will be spreading like Iraq. we have to put economic sanction against Turkey ,Saudi for supporting ISIS

You have already differentiated ISIS from the huge majority of peacful members if Islam by your use of the term "radical Islam". That term fits. As Mr. Zakira said, and you ignored there are millions of peaceful Muslims around the world.

Criminal terrorists call themselves "Muslim" in order to gain legitimacy. In the western world, uneducated individuals or those with certain agenda, call these criminals "Muslims" or "Muslim extremists", giving them legitimacy also. What needs to be done is to refrain from calling them "Muslim". We should rather use the term "NON Muslim". E.g,, instead of ISIS, the media should refer to them as "NISIS" (non-Islamic state of Iraq and Syria).

What baffles me is that hundreds of thousands of people have been and continue to be slaughtered in Indian Occupied Kashmir. A lot of them have been buried alive and rayped. Human rights outfits have provided coordinates of these unmarked graves to the Indian Government. How strange their compasses ceased functioning!!!

Furthermore, UN resolutions have also gone unheeded. No one in the western world.... No one hears their screams. Nobody sees their plight. Nobody smells their burning bodies. NOBODY!!!

The bigger problem for Islam is that it is based on the writings of a man who thought that God spoke to him. It doesn't help that God apparently told him wildly contradictory things that require a priest to interpret the meaning. It's enough to make one an atheist.

Even in countries like India where Muslims are relatively liberal, will not look kindly upon marriage between a Hindu and a Muslim. As with all generalizations, those who state things about "Muslims" seek to define a massive group by the actions of a few. What those extremists do, supposedly in the name of their religion, is clearly reprehensible, and a good case can be made that not enough "good Muslims" speak up in opposition. However, especially in the Middle East, given the number and reach of the extremists, it's not surprising people don't want to stand up. Malala is a great example of what happens to those who challenge them.

All that said, the basic problem remains true, just as it has since the beginning of mankind. Religion...any and all religions...have always been about power. Those who lead the religions always seek power by dominating others, demanding offerings, and in return promising some sort of beautiful eternity that they have no ability to deliver. All those religions have always become violent towards non-believers..and human history continues to be filled with wars based entirely upon religious intolerance. Religions that seek peace seek to provide it through war.

Maybe you should read one of the Gospels (pick one) and see of Jesus of Nazareth sounds very power hungry. (Hint, many of the people of the time turned on him when it became clear he did not have political ambitions.) One can rant at length about the way the Catholic church lost its way thereafter, but the plain fact is that the bulk of modern Christians trace no doctrine to the Catholic church.

Just as you'll find decent-natured members of an abusive household, there are decent-natured folks in Islam.
The danger these people pose is that they whitewash the root causes of the evil in both examples in order to "protect" the ones they love.
In the big picture, what they justify as noble gestures only perpetuates deeply rooted evil, socially corrosive traits. The philosophy is tragically flawed, and hopelessly irreparable.

Non-muslim societies must reject the presence of those whose souls are damned to this creed.

Thank you for the links. These sentiments are very common among Muslims of all backgrounds. There are no religious leaders in the Sunni branch of Islam, but ordinary citizens and community leaders and imams make similar statements. It is apparent that there are political motivations underlying why Muslims cannot be portrayed in a positive light by both news organizations and Hollywood. Of course, the bigots will say that this is all a ruse and some evil conspiracy.

It is wrong to say that. You will not win as long as they live and procreate on your land. Don't get mad. But it is true. Go to Britain, France and Australia, I am not surprised to see they will be Islamic countries in the next 50 years.

When Muslims of the Islamic Faith start to speak out in mass protests against Muslim terrorism, I’ll consider Islam a tolerant peace loving religion, until then, Islam and it’s adherents including the words of the Koran will remain intolerant and hateful of what Islam believes to be unbelievers.
The reason there will be no mass outrage is because believing Islamic Muslims would be criticizing their own religion and the Koran as being intolerant and hateful. Any criticizing of the Koran is considered un Islamic and a blasphemy. Take into and read a Bible in many Islamic countries and you’ll find yourself in big trouble (intolerant), have and read a Koran in so called Christian counties no problem (tolerant).

      Wes,

The problem is: the Western media refuse to have open public debate about violent truth of Islam and prophet Mohammad.

      Talking about Islam is taboo.

People don't want to know or to learn the dark history of Islam and its founder.

Well, sadly, let them learn a very hard lessons about Islam when the Muslims take over power. This is the price they will pay for giving out visas to Muslims instead of Christians, for being so ignorant about Islam until they get lashed and beheaded.

Google "Three Stages of Jihad" for some insight into what Islam is up to as an entirety. Even so called "Peaceful Muslims" are fighting Jihad and not even aware of it. The best thing for Islam is to keep it contained to areas of the world that are already hopelessly infected. Islam is incompatible with western values or democracy. The only think Muslims understand is rule by sword- violence. Islam needs ruthless dictators like Saddam Hussein, Qadafi and Al-Assad just to keep a relative semblace of peace. Once the rulers are no longer firmly in charge, you get ISIS, Al-Qaeda and the hundreds of other groups out there which consider the world their enemy.

Wes, on the one hand you have Muslims on this thread espousing peace and understanding, and on the other you have Islamophobes advocating genocide. It is pretty obvious who has the higher moral ground here. I'm afraid you are mistaken that Muslims do not condemn terrorism, whether by Muslims or Nona-Muslims. You can check the websites of prominent Muslim organizations such as ISNA or view Haroon's YouTube links.

I also recall that Sheik Rahman denounced the supporting of terrorism...all the while he plotted to blow up the WTC. In Islam, it's permitted to lie publicly to infidels in order to gain their trust or expose their vulnerabilities. They even have a word for it: Taqiyya.

        Wes,
You are RIGHT! We are not hateful like the Islam BUT it is our responsibility to teach and to educate the World about the violent truth of Islam and Prophet Mohammad.

It is our responsibility to stand up and to protect our lands and rights from the Islam and the Muslims.

It is our responsibility to show the World the plight of Christians under Islam, how they are persecuted per Islam per Koran by Muslims.

It is our commitment to force and to pressure public media, universities, colleges, high schools to hold hometown meetings and public debates about true life of Mohhammad and bloody Koran.

        EVERYDAY

        EVERY MINUTE

        EVERY PLACE

        BE VIGILANT

Just because majority of the Muslims are peaceful it is no justification. It's true that most Muslims are peaceful....because like all ordinary people they understand that they have to earn their living and are busy with life's struggles and earning a livelihood, besides most understand that killing anyone, even in the name of God is wrong. However, there is enough in the Quran and Mohammad's life that can motivate others to kill. That's what ISIS is doing and has enough proof to justify. In my opinion, that is the fundamental problem with the religion. If majority of the Muslims are peaceful, then they need to come together and cleanse the religion, purge all the violence related sections from the Quran. What ISIS is doing is using violence to eliminate the infidels, exactly what Mohammad did.

    Mr. Fareed Zakaria,

I am not mad with you. But I want to tell you something. A really story.

I have conversation with 3 Muslims (2 out of the States AND one in the States) for 1 week long debate. Topic: Why Islam is not peaceful and why is ISIS the mirror of Islam?

They, the Muslims, COULD NOT, prove, any verse in Koran saying "Blessed the ones who cursed you and persecuted you. Forgive those who persecuted you". ONE WEEK DEBATE and the 3 Muslims COULD NOT find any verse saying forgiving those who persecuted you.

When I showed them from the Koran "The infidels are either converted, or paid high tax or get killed", and asked them to prove if it is peaceful? Their answers were:

1/ No, it is not. Only paid high tax. (Once I open the Toba, they were quiet)

There were a lot of violence against Christians and infidels that are written in Koran and enforced as Shariah. They were done, has been done and will be done upon Christians, Jews and non-Muslims.

If you and the Muslims blame ISIS for the crimes, What did Prophet Mohammad Do? If what he did were Immoral, then Why Muslims protested in Denmark or against anyone who said the truth about what Mohammad did?

If the Muslims said Islam is peaceful, why the Koran and its founder, carry so much blood on their hands?

MY ANSWER IS: Muslims use Islam and explain Islam at their own conveniences anytime and anywhere that benefit them.
