On GPS Sunday: Remembering fall of Berlin Wall, is Obama a Republican, and a Syria plan

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

On GPS this Sunday: First, Fareed offers his take on the implications of the midterm elections and why he believes President Barack Obama still has time to do big things over the next two years – especially in foreign policy.

Then, it is 25 years ago this Sunday that the Berlin Wall began to fall – an event that too much of the world by surprise. Fareed speaks with then-U.S. National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft and a former top British foreign policy advisor, Charles Powell.

Then, the economy, immigration, politics...How well do you know your world? GPS will share some sobering numbers on just how little many Americans (and others around the world) really know. See how you fair on the quiz here.

And, Fareed speaks with Bruce Bartlett, an economics columnist, author and historian who argued in a recent article in the American Conservative that President Obama is actually a  Republican. He’ll explain why.

Also, the White House appears to have no real solution for the ongoing crisis in Syria. Nor does the Republican Party. But Fareed will talk to a man who says he does – and he has ideas that seem to make a lot of sense.

    Let's talk turkey, Fareed:

:::20% of women or 140 million women have been gang rhaped in India

:::60% of men or 420 million men in India think that gang rhaping and burning the wife alive for dowry by spraying kerosene and lighting her up is acceptable.

:::There is a rhape every 2 seconds in India

::: 85% of women in India have been groped, their breasts pulled like pork and a ss fingered

::80% of hinddoous track to rail tracks to defecate in India.

From toilets to rhape to your mouth, Fareed. Some issues worth your intake.

I stood in front of The Taj Mahal and took in all the good that the Moghals stood for.

I read about the Temples of Khajurahu and the evil that Kali Maa stands for.

Two cultures: The Moslem Moghals – so very enlightened. The Hindus – epitomy of terrorism.

After reading the less than desirable comments being posted by you know who now i understand that why Lord Churchill said that – At times you need to pick up weapon to uphold the righteousness and goodness. At times, you have to wage wars because you seek peace. This higher concept of "duality" of the nature of the universe and humanity, seems contradictory at first to an ordinary intellect, but that's the ultimate truth.

Let me see if I can get these comments back on track with some semblance of decorum.

Churchill also had to lie sometimes and say V-2 rocket attacks were terrorist attacks. If British subjects had become aware of NAZIs having rockets that left earth's atmosphere and reentered landing on London, subjects would begin fleeing the kingdom.

Winston Churchill was a known bigot.
He liked neither the Hindu nor the Muslim faiths. Using him as an appeal to authority is rather useless.

    Foreign Policy 101:

Dick Cheney accurately put it in perspective:

The American invasion of Afghanistan brought to the forefront the irrelevance of India as a nation.

    • Blue Saffron

The bottom line is that the only way to have peace in Afghanistan and lessen regional tension is split India into pieces. It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no return on this investment. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts.

Of course, we can carve out a hindu nation along the a portion of the western coast where they can continue to practice their medieval culture and hopefully come into the folds of the modern world within the next century.Otherwise, I am afraid, extremism will continue to fester in that region and continue to become a threat for the western nations.

        November 8, 2014 at 3:48 pm |
  27. Blue Saffron

The thesis of the aforementioned dissertation is that smaller independent states will generate tremendous economic demand for western nations, be democratically more efficient and easy to manage, Christian friendly, religion tolerant, a great source of demand for military equipment from the west, culturally h omogenous and will unleash opportunities for the people that will eradicate poverty. Moreover, the currently subjugated and enslaved minorities will have a place they can call home, have their s kin in the game and work harder and with a passion to keep that neighborhood clean from extremists.

Bravo @Blue Saffron. You have me going this Saturday afternoon. I am grilling my steaks and veggies while having merlot as I write this. You can imagine how pumped I am after reading your post.

The way I reckon, we have been fighting a war for the past twelve years with no end. Our soldiers have shed blood to no end. Their families are suffering. Has even one Indian soldier sacrificed his life in helping the Americans, NATO and western countries in fighting this war? The answer is a resolute NO. Folks, just think about it, 1.2 million Indian Army soldiers are sitting in trenches doing what???? Sure the heck beats me. Americans are now questioning the US Congress as to what they are doing to correct this unsustainable relationship with India. The India caucus is being monitored by citizen groups. If they don't respond to the needs of the American people political contributions to them will be severely impacted.
