Are MOOCs the future of education?

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

Fareed speaks with Stuart Butler, a Brookings scholar, who's written extensively on massive open online courses, or so-called MOOCs, and Anant Agarwal, who runs edX, a MOOC outfit founded by two bricks and mortar institutions.

Stuart, explain first the kind of crisis in what you've called the business model for higher education.

Well, it certainly is a crisis that they’re facing. First of all, the costs of traditional education have been going up and the indebtedness associated with it. Now student tuition debt in the United States exceeds credit card debt. Secondly...

And it's $1 trillion, right?

Butler: Yes, exactly. Secondly, you're seeing different kinds of information coming forward so that people can actually evaluate the success of going to one college or another, whether it actually pays off.

And then the third thing, which you referred to, is that you're seeing new kinds of technologies that, first of all, appeal to students who are not part of the regular market, but now that technology is being developed, such as through edX and through others, such that it is really beginning to break open the existing traditional market. So there's an existential threat to the very business model that, quite honestly, has been lasting for almost 2,000 years.

You point out the numbers are pretty staggering. You now have, among private, non-profit college graduates, 65 percent in debt. The average indebtedness is $20,000. Cost is obviously now at two, three hundred thousand dollars to go to college, at least. And it's not clear that they get that much out of it.

Butler: That's right. And that's the driving force. Once you combine information about whether you're getting good value for money, and then you combine that with new technologies, that gives you different ways of actually getting to the same result. That's what breaks open a market.

But of course, a lot of people say, that's fine, but you can't just sit in front of a computer and watch some professor – that's not education. What do you say to that, as somebody running an outfit that does sort of that?

Agarwal: Today's online education is not our grandfather's online education. Its completely transformed. We are doing short videos, interactive gaming technology where professors are using game-like technologies, discussions, segments such as yours, where various people get together, experts in the field get together to discuss a topic. So it's not just a video of a professor standing at the end of a classroom. So the technology has advanced tremendously. We bring discussion forums and the social into the classroom, into the online experience. And so this can be a very rich and very high quality experience.

I know what it is from; the irony is amusing.

Look up the word "irony" if you're unsure of what it means.

It not my comprehension that is lacking; clearly it it is yours, as you cannot grasp what your own cited sources says. It isn't my literacy that is at issue here.

On February 5, 2014 in India eight Americans and four Koreans were attacked by a hindu mob at 10 pm because of allegations of forced conversions propagated from a Facebook page. Some of the ruffians threw stones at the walls outside the hotel where the tourists were staying. The Facebook page showed an image of three oriental women and first line of a long caption stated, "Attention Kashmir!!! Hinduism in Kashmir is under attack, Christians trying to convert Christians."

In a well-publicised case in India, Graham Staines, an Australian Christian missionary, was burnt to death by hindus along with his sons Timothy (aged 9) and Philip (aged 7), while they were sleeping in his station wagon at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district in Orissa in January 2014. He was running the Evangelical Missionary Society of Mayurbhanj, an Australian missionary society. Claims of Staines' "distribution of beef & desecrating Hindu Deities" were the primary justification for this attack.

Pastor Christopher from the Malakpet area of Hyderabad, India told International Christian Concern (ICC) of a gruesome incident that shook him and his entire congregation to the core. On Feb. 2, Bethel Gospel Church, where Pastor Christopher preaches, was set on fire by unknown assailants suspected to be connected to Hindu radical groups. The anti-Christian activists carried out the attack during the early morning hours to inflict maximum damage to the church.

The church was burnt to ashes, everything inside the church including carpets, musical instruments, speakers and chairs were utterly destroyed.

"We are living in fear," the pastor told ICC. "There have been continuous threats from the Hindu radicals. We Christians are treated as second class citizens in this country."

During his 15 years of service, Pastor Christopher has been threatened by the Hindu radical group RSS on many occasions. Once he was threatened by RSS to stop all church activities or else they would "chop him into pieces."

Christopher fears the intensity of these Hindu radicals will only increase if BJP comes to power in the government. But Christopher also believes if an increase in persecution is to be India's future, he hopes this situation will unite the Indian church.

Although related, Hinduism and Hindutva are different. Hinduism is a cult while Hindutva is a fascist political ideology idiolized by majority of Hindus (Hindu Talibans).
In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in violent attacks on
Christians in India, often perpetrated by Hindu Nationalists/Hindu Talibans.
The acts of violence include arson of churches, re-conversion of Christians to Hinduism, distribution of threatening literature, burning of Bibles, raiping of nuns, murder of Christian priests and destruction of Christian schools, colleges, and cemeteries.

The American invasion of Afghanistan brought to the forefront the irrelevance of India as a nation. With a population of over 1.2 billion people there was no value that this nation could bring to the table. Their soldiers (ragtag) 1.2 million continue hiding in the trenches scared from Talibans. A few teenage Talibans invaded the country and held it hostage for days on end showing how useless India is. It was embarrasing for the world to observe this humiliation of a nation that was being touted as a regional power. The Talibans brought them down in a few days with some BB guns. It is all over for India. Its demise is in process and should be completed with Afghanistan withdrawal.

The bottom line is that the only way to have peace in Afghanistan and lessen regional tension is split India into pieces. It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no return on this investment. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts.

The thesis is that smaller independent states will generate tremendous economic demand for western nations, be democratically more efficient and easy to manage, Christian friendly, religion tolerant, a great source of demand for military equipment from the west, culturally h omogenous and will unleash opportunities for the people that will eradicate poverty. Moreover, the currently subjugated and enslaved minorities will have a place they can call home, have their s kin in the game and work harder and with a passion to keep that neighborhood clean from extremists.

Of course, we can carve out a hindu nation along the a portion of the western coast where they can continue to practice their medieval culture and hopefully come into the folds of the modern world within the next century.Otherwise, I am afraid, extremism will continue to fester in that region and continue to become a threat for the western nations.
