Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN
Fareed speaks with Ernesto Zedillo, an economist who served as president of Mexico and is now the director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, and Ethan Nadelmann, the executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, about the war on drugs.
So explain, Ernesto, why you think the drug war has failed.
Zedillo: Well, by any objective indicator – let's look at what has happened with consumption, let's see what has happened with production of drugs, let's see how many people that are in jail. I mean, when these wars started in the U.S., you had 300,000 people in U.S. jails. Now you have 2.3 million people. And a lot of those people are in jail because of minor offenses, drug-related minor offenses.
But if you see south of the border, what we'll have to talk about thousands of people who have died in my country, you will have to speak about all these resources that flow north to south, and not only serve to buy weapons and to kill people in Mexico, but believe me, drug policies in your country, in Europe, in Latin America – everywhere – are making our job so much harder and so much more painful.

7:15 is not my comment. Shame on the thief.
"Terrorism is rampant in the region in part financed by Indians. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts. "
I am from Haiti who cares about India. Where is it btw?
@my possum pretensions and more pretensions. We see through it.
Yes. Indians attack each other. Duh.
Turkey brains.... Derp. Cherokee perhaps.
I fully agree but I would go one step further and legalize narcotics. Clinics that currently distribute methadone could also distribute herion but only to those who are clearly addicted. Along with needles. Taking these two drugs away from the drug gangs would do much to diminish their wholesale destruction of Mexico. And it would cease filling up our prisons with these usuer offenders.
Ok but try pani puri first with chaat masala. To die for.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown all had something in common their love affair with drugs, and cocaine which seems to be our great nations weakness when we have to spark a long big dobbie after work with our friends. So here is how we deal with the drug problem in America it's called education ladies and gentleman, and starts with the family's of young teenager boy's and girls using drugs. Instead of making them feel bad they are taking drugs talk to your kids, about how drugs can ruin their lives and send them in debt problems with their family's and banks as well. Also as Americans we need to win the war on drugs in our country, because we can't let the Mexican drug cartel take control of our streets and rule our lives as well. Rick James the Super freak who had a song called Mary Jane also spoke of his trouble times with drugs and how they ruined his life, as Americans we need to realize being high is not the answer but education and pushing out the drug cartels who rule our fair city's in our great nation is the answer to the problem in America for years to come.
