American innovation is in trouble

By Fareed Zakaria

If you ask people in Silicon Valley what makes it work, they will talk about many things — the ability to fail, the lack of hierarchy, the culture of competition. One thing almost no one mentions is the government. And yet, the Valley’s origins are deeply tied to government support. The reason there were so many engineers in California in the 1950s and 1960s was because large defense companies had attracted them there. Most of the legendary start-ups that fueled the computer revolution — Fairchild Semiconductor, Intel — got off the ground largely because the military, and later NASA, would buy their products until they became cheap and accessible enough for the broader commercial market. GPS, the technology that now powers the information revolution, was developed for the military.

And then there was government funding for research, which is sometimes thought of simply as large grants to universities for basic science but often was far more ingenious. My favorite example comes from Walter Isaacson’s fascinating new book, “The Innovators.” In the 1950s, the U.S. government funded a massive project at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, employing equal numbers of psychologists and engineers who worked together to find ways “that humans could interact more intuitively with computers and information could be presented with a friendlier interface.” Isaacson traces how this project led directly to the user-friendly computer screens of today as well as ARPANET, the precursor of the Internet.

Federal funding for basic research and technology should be utterly uncontroversial. It has been one of the greatest investments in human history. And yet it has fallen to its lowest level as a percentage of GDP in four decades.

And for those of you just tuning in, the house is empty. This song goes out to empty houses everywhere. There are 7 times as many vacant homes in the USA as there are homeless people.

    All By Myself

    When I was young
    I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
    Those days are gone
    Livin' alone
I think of all the friends I've known
    When I dial the telephone
    Nobody's home

    All by myself
    Don't wanna be
    All by myself
    Anymore

    Hard to be sure
    Sometimes I feel so insecure
And loves so distant and obscure
    Remains the cure

    All by myself
    Don't wanna be
    All by myself
    Anymore
    All by myself
    Don't wanna live
    All by myself
    Anymore

    When I was young
    I never needed anyone
Making love was just for fun
    Those days are gone

    All by myself
    Don't wanna be
    All by myself
    Anymore
    All by myself
    Don't wanna live
    Oh
    Don't wanna live
    By myself, by myself
    Anymore
    By myself
    Anymore
    Oh
    All by myself
    Don't wanna live
    I never, never, never
    Needed anyone

What song now? I always kind of wanted to be a radio guy. Playing my favorite songs and making idle chit-chat with listeners. Hmmm. Never really gave it a shot though.

I've been on the radio several times though. Mostly on Coast-to-Coast AM with Ian Punnit before he got canned. And the other radio heads you all know of. What's that fat fu*kers name that uses his own name backwards? Davis Clyde. Calls himself "Clyde Davis" on the radio. I tied that chump into so many knots he banished me from his webpage and refuses my late-night call ins. Pure chump.
I was big into sports too when young, and frequently faxed and called-in to KTLA sports talk radio. My fav is when I dissed Mike Ditka, a hothead, for taking the greatest NFL team to date and single handedly bringing down Da Bearss. I said he belonged behind barsse for what he did to da Bearsse. he he And faxed a pic of Ditka downstairs with the sodomites in jail! Lol.

    ...ahem. Where were wise?

Back upon an old dirt road next to a swamp full of toads
Was a slanted wood shack with three little kids and a mama
Papa died in '63 left little Jenny and me
To plant those taters and pull up another tomorrow

    Rocky mountain music
    Fills my memory
    Rocky mountain music
Papa can I hear you playing for me

Little brother was never quite right, he used to sit on the floor in the sunlight
Play with the dust that danced on the beams in the window
And sister had to cook and clean, 'cause momma she got sick and lean
Sometimes I think she just died away missing papa

    Rocky mountain music
    Fills my memory
    Rocky mountain music
Mama can I hear you singing to me

Well every thing has changed today and little brother he was taken away
And sister, she married a soldier and lives in Toledo
And me I'm in a Nashville bar and I've never been so far
From that old gravel road and the rivers that run through my memory

    Rocky mountain music
    Fills my memory
    Rocky mountain music
Brother can I hear you calling me

    Rocky mountain music
    Fills my memory
    Rocky mountain music
Papa can I hear you playing for me

That was Eddie Rabbit singing on stage at Billy Bob's Texas as fans threw beer bottles at him. I was chatting with Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys at the time and though I too was upset George Jones didn't show again kind of like Eddie Rabbit. Especially the words to that song. Little brother was never quite right...moves me.
    Anyway. What song now?

How 'bout some George Jones then.
    Tennesee Whiskey 🙂

I used to spend my nights out in a bar room
Liquor was the only love I'd known
But you rescued me from reachin' for the bottom
And you brought me back from being too far gone

You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And I stay stoned on your love all the time

I looked for love in all the same old places
Found the bottom of the bottle always dry
But when you poured out your heart I didn't waste it
'Cause there's nothing like your love to get me high

You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And I stay stoned on your love all the time
I stay stoned on your love all the time

That was No-Show George Jones. And THIS is Tammy Wynette singing one of the saddest songs ever. D-I-V-O-R-C-E

Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man
So we spell out the words we don't want him to understand
    Like T-O-Y or maybe S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E
But the words we're hiding from him now
Tear the heart right out of me

    Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today
Me and little J-O-E will be goin' away
I love you both and this will be pure H-E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E

Watch him smile, he thinks it's Christmas
Or his 5th Birthday and he thinks C-U-S-T-O-D-Y spells fun or play
I spell out all the hurtin' words and turn my head when I speak
'Cause I can't spell away this hurt that's drippin' down my cheek

    Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today
Me and little J-O-E will be goin' away
I love you both and this will be pure H-E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E

    No one remembers Richard Hubbell.

But if you were one of the few people in New York during 1941 with a television set, you could have watched his 15-minute program, Richard Hubbell and the News.

Hubbell was one of the first television news anchors. His small audience watched the show twice a week on New York’s experimental CBS television station WCBW.

However, his early chapter in broadcast history came to an end with World War II. The emerging television industry was put on hold while the nation focused on the war.

Movie newsreels occasionally aired on TV during this period, but for the most part, radio reported the broadcast journalism stories from World War II.

Although radio networks had been in existence since the 1920s, large television networks really didn’t start until 1948 when coaxial cable began connecting major TV markets.

One of the first things the network stations shared was news. During the late 1940s and early 1950s television viewers began watching the news on four television networks: NBC, CBS, ABC and DuMont.

These were the early days of television news. Keep in mind, that as of 1950, only nine percent of American homes had a television.

As NBC’s John Chancellor once put it, “It was sort of a primitive caveman television that we were putting out at that time.”

Don Hewitt from CBS said, “It was like a bunch of kids playing with Play Doh….We had no idea what we were doing in the early days….It was so horse and buggy and fun. Nobody knew what he was doing, but you didn’t care because who had a television set?”

"...but you didn't care because who had a television set?" One of my all-time favorite quotes. For I am 55 years old and have never bothered with having a TV. Yes. I am different than you all. And is why we don't get along. You all have been programmed. I have not. I think out of all of you only Joey has escaped the madness. And am going to stop using so many punctuation marks on account of hime Joey. The English language is confusing enough with out them. Eh Joey.

Don't the Hindus get the message? Kashmiris don't wanna be under their subjugation. They have shunned India. Hold plebiscite and let the people decide. That is what we Americans are letting the Puerto Ricans decide. Now do it before India becomes an inferno

The recent communal violence in Muzaffarnagar, India has once again brought home the danger of playing politics with religious beliefs. In the past eight years, there have been nearly 11.000 thousand communal incidents across the country in India. While the casualties are countable ...... 130,965 dead and over 118,000 injured – the toll on India's economic and social fabric is beyond any metric.

The worst five states in India in terms of communal violence incidents per million population are Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Kerala, in that order, over a period spanning from 2005 to the first quarter of 2013. Madhya Pradesh, with 3965 incidents between 2005 and 2013 (March), has the worst record of nearly 144 incidents for every million population. The countrywide average is about 129 incidents per million population.
